ABBITT, Mr. Charles Irby Sr., 92, of Victoria, Va., died Sunday, September 27, 2009, at Riverside Hospital in Newport News, Va. He is survived by his wife, Hazel Johnson Abbitt; two children, Bonnie A. Branch and Charles I. Abbitt Jr. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 1, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the Victoria Baptist Church with interment in the Lakeview Cemetery, Victoria. Arnold, Rosalie G.

Arnold Rosalie G. Arnold, 90, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 in Ridgefield Assisted Living. She was the daughter of the late John B. and Lydia Gentry. She was also predeceased by her husband, Warren G. Arnold, a son, Richard W. Redmiles, and five sisters and two brothers. Survivors include stepchildren, Wanda Doane, Chilhowie; Nancy Lagerholm, Chilhowie; Teresa Obermills, Texas; Gracie Poston, Marion; Glenn Arnold, Chilhowie; Garnett Arnold, Glade Spring; brother, B.C. and Janice Gentry, Marion; sister, Doris Roe, Dayton, Ohio; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at D.R. Henderson Funeral Home with the Rev. Mark Lundy officiating. Ashlin, Carrie Marie

Ashlin Carrie Marie Ashlin, 90, widow of Curtis G. Ashlin, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 at Francis Marion Manor with her daughters by her side. She was born in Smyth County to the late John Taylor and Winnie McKinnon Taylor. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sister Thelma Taylor Greear. She was a master quilter and crafts person. She maintained a membership with the Methodist church while living in Wayne, Michigan, and Sugar Grove. She served in several leadership positions with the Girl Scouts of America, United Methodist Women and Smyth County Extension Service. She was a woman who lived with love in her heart. She lived a courageous and creative life and will always be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be missed by all who knew her. Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis McClure, Green Valley, Ariz., and Rebecca Taylor Ashlin, Green Valley, Ariz.; two brothers, Ronnie Taylor and wife, Shirley, Rural Retreat, and James Taylor and wife, Mozelle, Baltimore, Md.; grandson, Zachary Ashlin Yunker, Boise, Idaho; nephew and niece, Bobby Greear and wife, Mary, Greensboro, N.C., and Anna Vaught and husband, Johnny, Thornburg; cousins, Freda Duncan, Marion, Mary Jo Phillippi, Sugar Grove, and Libby Prater, Christiansburg. Several loving family members and friends also survive. A celebration of the life of Carrie Marie Ashlin was held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Marion with the Rev. Neville Mozingo officiating. Interment followed in the Ridgelawn Cemetery in Sugar Grove. The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Bradley's Funeral Home. BANKS, Ruth Beatrice

BANKS, Deaconess Ruth Beatrice, 93, of Bowling Green, Va., went to be with the Lord on September 25, 2009 at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Va. She was born May 13, 1916 to the late Garfield and Cora Hicks Johnson in Blacksburg, Va. She was one of eight siblings, all of whom preceded her in death. On June 15, 1941, Ruth was united in holy matrimony to the late Raymond James Banks Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory her loyal and devoted daughter, Ruth Wells and her husband, Leroy, of Washington, D.C.; her loving sons, Raymond Banks Jr. and his wife, Frances of Richmond, Va., Michael Banks and his wife, Carolyn, of South Orange, N.J., and Joseph Banks and his wife, Iris, of Richmond, Va.; nine grandchildren, Ivan Banks, Sonya Ashby, Kevin Banks, Kenneth Banks, Lamar Banks, Tasha Wells, Niretta Banks, Michael Banks and Albert Banks; 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, one brother-in-law, two sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by one great-grandchild. A viewing will be held on Friday, October 2, from noon to 5 p.m. at C. W. Edwards Funeral Home. BOZARD, Mrs. Doris F., 87, of Midlothian, died September 27, 2009. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Louis R. Bozard; three children, Richard F. Bozard and his wife, Kathy Lynn, William L. Bozard and his wife, Margaret, and Kathleen B. Farwell and her husband, David; three grandsons, William L. Bozard Jr., Richard F. Bozard II and Daniel L. Gidick; and three sisters, Helen Barnes (her identical twin), Vera Shaw, and Barbara Coli. Mrs. Bozard was one of eight daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Farrell Fitzpatrick. She was a volunteer at Chippenham Medical Center for 20 years and was a founding member of St. Edward's Catholic Church. She was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and wife who always put her family first. As well, she was a wonderful homemaker and caregiver. Her remains rest at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 1 p.m. Thursday, at St. Edward's Catholic Church, 2700 Dolfield Drive. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. BROSKIE, Grace Trimmer

BROSKIE, Grace Trimmer, was born April 7, 1922, and deceased September 27, 2009. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Eckener Broskie; and by eight brothers and sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Nancy Elaine Broskie and husband, Bill, in Oregon. Grace is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends from Virginia and Harrisburg, North Carolina. In recent years she especially appreciated her neighbors, Georgia and Herb Bruch, and her sister-in-law, Carol Trimmer. Grace is in the national Softball Hall of Fame in Virginia, and won numerous Iris awards in Charlotte. She worked at Dupont and the Federal Reserve Bank before being a housewife and the Harrisburg neighborhood stay-at-home mom who took care of sick neighborhood children while taking care of her five acres of land, gardens and pond. She was an expert marksman and fisherwoman. She had visitors practically every day for 40 years to try her new recipes before succumbing to lung cancer. The oldest of 10 children, she leaves behind siblings, Kermit Cook (Lucy) of Dillwyn, Va., Leola White of Ruther Glen, Va., Beatrice Brown of Brenton, W.Va., Shirley Jacobs (H.G. Buddy) of Mechanicsville, Va., and Micki Privett of Highland Springs, Va. CHAMBLISS, Mr. Russell Henry Jr., died at 82 on Monday, September 28, 2009. He was predeceased by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Henry Chambliss of Norfolk, Virginia; and his two sisters of Norfolk and Virginia Beach. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jane Williams Chambliss; and their three children, Russell Warren Chambliss and his wife, Ann, of Birmingham, Alabama, Patty Chambliss Whitten and her husband, Bobby, and John Randolph Chambliss and his wife, Lindsay, all of Richmond. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, Russell Warren Chambliss Jr. and his wife, Rebecca, Mary Margaret Chambliss, Jane Chambliss Drennen and her husband, Daniel, Frank Mason "Beau" Chambliss and his wife, Mary Russell, and their daughter, Julia, all of Birmingham, Alabama, Sarah Whitten Cochran and her husband, Zach, and their children, Eliza and Preston, Amy Catherine Whitten, Mary Margaret Whitten, Henry Boyd Chambliss, Gray Williams Chambliss and Carter Randolph Chambliss, all of Richmond. After graduating Maury High School in Norfolk, Virginia, he entered the Army, where he was stationed in Germany towards the end of World War II and served on the ski patrol in the 3rd Infantry Division. After the war, he graduated from The College of William and Mary, and entered a 40-year career in the paper industry, which brought him to Richmond as Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the Oxford Paper division of Ethyl Corporation. He retired as the owner of Richmond Paper Company. Besides his family, his most cherished achievement came after retirement, when he became the Executive Vice President for America's First Freedom Council; where he led an effort that ended up in the Oval Office with President George H. W. Bush signing a proclamation declaring January 16th as National Religious Freedom Day, and led to the construction of the First Freedom Center in Richmond, Virginia. He was a member of the Sons of the Revolution, The Kiwanis Club, The Commonwealth Club, The Country Club of Virginia and St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry. He also served on a variety of public and private boards for both civic and corporate organizations. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all of the nurses and staff in the Special Care Unit at Cedarfield for making his last days comfortable. DEITRICK, Jacob Lynn "Jack" "Jake," 94, of Short Pump, died Saturday, September 26, 2009 at his home. A native of Henrico County, Jacob was born to Claudius Perry Deitrick and Nellie Cocke Deitrick on January 20, 1915. He was a longtime member of Deep Run Baptist Church and later Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Mr. Deitrick was an employee of VEPCO, retiring in 1977. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Virginia Schomburg Deitrick; as well as five of his siblings and a grandchild. Survivors include daughters, Beverly D. Light (the late John E. Jr.) of Loganville, Ga. and Jacklyn D. McCown (Dr. George M. III) of Marietta Ga.; sister, Hilda D. Howard (Hugh H.) of Sebring, Fla.; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, as well as many dear friends, nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 30, and Thursday, October 1, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street. Georgia Cary Davis IVOR - On Friday morning, Sept. 25, 2009 at Consulate Health Care Center in Windsor, Va., our hearts were saddened by the passing of our beloved mother, Mrs. Georgia Cary Davis, 94. Georgia was born Jan. 14, 1915, in Southampton County, Virginia to the late Charlie and Emma Cary. She was a lifelong native of Southampton County attending its rural public schools. Georgia joined Gilfield Baptist Church at an early age and remained a loyal and dedicated member until her death. At Gilfield, she served in many capacities from the missionary board to her final position as mother of the church. As a retired domestic worker, she rejoiced in the fact that through Christ all things are possible. After reaching the age of adulthood, Georgia was united in holy matrimony to Isaac Davis in Southampton County on Feb. 2, 1935. This was an enduring relationship that spanned more than 50 years until God called Isaac home to his eternal resting place to this blissful union God bestowed upon them 13 offspring. Georgia was predeceased by her parents, Charlie and Emma Cary; her husband, Isaac Davis; three sisters, Helen and Addie Cary and Dorothy Edwards; four brothers, Leroy, Charlie, Walter and Clarence Cary; three sons, Isaac, Charlie and McCoy Davis. She is survived by six daughters, Georgia Ann Davis- Simmons (Earl) of Virginia Beach, Elizabeth Parham (Bernard) of Lynchburg, Va., Minister Shirley Martin (Roosevelt) of Copperas Cove, Texas, Lucy Wynn, Emma Faltz and Mary Lee Davis of Ivor; four sons, Ronnie Davis Sr. (Avis) of Wakefield, Va., John Davis (Clare) of Ivor, Ulysses Davis (Gladys) of Lynchburg, and McClenny Davis (Rosa) of Norfolk; 25 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Odell Warren of Ivor, Florence Thornton of Lynchburg, and Adell Bowers of Washington, D.C.; a daughter- in-law, Sadie Davis of Ivor; with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Falcone Sr., John

John J. Falcone Sr. NORFOLK - John J. Falcone Sr., 81, of the 1000 block of Hugo St., passed away Sept. 29, 2009, in Bon Secours DePaul Medical Center. A native of Connecticut, he was the son of the late Samuel and Florence Falcone. He retired from the United States Navy after 24 years as an air traffic controller. He also retired as manager of Brith Shalom Center after 30 years. Prior to joining, John was in the Army Reserves helping with the war effort. At 17, John joined the Navy as a deep sea diver. When the Navy started using aircrafts, John volunteered to change his rate to be one of the Navy's first air traffic controllers. He spent his 21st birthday on the Berlin Airlift. His last shipboard assignment was aboard the USS Enterprise, the first nuclear aircraft carrier. After making an around the world cruise, the Enterprise and its crew were ordered by President Kennedy to the Bay of Pigs. He is survived by his wife, Sandra L. Falcone; eight daughters, four sons, two sisters, three brothers; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Claudia Scott; a son, John J. Falcone Jr.; sisters, Louise Earl and Shirley Sorbero; and a brother, Samuel F. Falcone Jr. A funeral will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in St. John Lutheran Church with Pastor Keith Olivier officiating. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Hilda Hahn Dusten, Billie K. Brown Long and Thelma D. Powell Donahue. She is survived by her husband, Okey Gibson, whom she married on March 1, 1963; children, Thomas P. (Jill) Gibson of Akron, Deborah S. Sanford of Brimfield and Donna L. Petrow of North Royalton; stepson, Michael R. (Cheryl) Gibson of Dover; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother, Noel T. (Geneva) Louthen of Saltville; and sister, June Dolbow of Kent. Calling hours were held 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27, at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent where funeral services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28, with Pastor Dan Alexoff of First Freedom Baptist Church officiating. Ronnie Holbrook Ronnie Holbrook, 55, of Bluefield and Rocky Gap died Sunday, Sept. 20, 2009, at his residence after a long battle with cancer. Funeral service was held Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 2 p.m. at Dudley Memorial Mortuary in Bluefield with the Rev. Jeff Callahan officiating and Steve Altizer as guest speaker. Entombment was at Grand View Memory Gardens in Bluefield. He was born June 5, 1954, in Bluefield. He worked for Tabor Machine Co. for 12 years before becoming self-employed. He was owner/operator of Holbrook Auto Service. He was an avid cattle farmer and sportsman. He was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather and friend. He enjoyed spending a great deal of time with children and grandchildren. He never met a stranger and his most famous words were, "Call me if you need me." He was preceded in death by his father, Edward J. Holbrook of Bristol, Tenn.; paternal grandparents, Damon and Flora Holbrook; maternal grandparents, Kite and Ada Wimmer; and a niece, Amanda Gilmore. Survivors include his loving wife of 33 years, Sheryl Holbrook; two sons and daughters-in-law, Brian and Lori Holbrook of Bluefield, W.Va., Ronnie Jr. and Ashley Holbrook Bluefield; mother, Louise Holbrook Kimmell of Bristol, Tenn.; father-in-law, James Franklin of Winston-Salem, N.C.; mother-in-law, Joe Ann Tolbert of Bluefield; a brother, Wayne Holbrook of Abingdon; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Phyllis McFarland of Bristol, Tenn., Wanda and Sammy Sells of Abingdon, Noreen and Gibb Honaker of Robertsdale, Ala.; a brother-in-law, Grady Franklin of Greensboro, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Brenda Franklin of Bluefield; six grandchildren, Andy, Austin, Kailyn, Nathan, Eden and James "Bubby"; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many friends; and very special friends including Dan and Becky Belcher, Mike and Cathy Dalton, and Bobby and Candy Hood. She was a graduate of St. Catherine's School, Richmond, and Wheaton College, Norton, Mass. She founded snob, a consignment shop in Winston-Salem, N.C. Earlier she was on the staff of the Richmond Times-Dispatch and also was the secretary of the Kentucky Opera Association. She was a collector of folk art. Also, she was a member of the Garden Club of Virginia and the Albemarle Garden Club. She is survived by her husband, J. Stephen Lord, Earlysville; three sons, J. Stephen Lord Jr. of Richmond, John Sidney Davenport Lord of Leesburg and Nathan MacAdams Lord of Richmond; and eight grandchildren. Marchant Charles Lincoln Marchant, 77, husband of Frances Marie (Brown) Marchant, of 401 Linden Drive, Staunton, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 2009 in Augusta Health in Fishersville. He was born March 2, 1932 in Smyth County, a son of the late John Edward and Carrie Mae (Dean) Marchant. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force and the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center in Fishersville as a purchasing officer. He was a member of the Staunton-Augusta VFW Post 2216 and a member of Ridgeview Baptist Church for 42 years. He will be remembered by his only granddaughter, Madison, for his funny sense humor. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jerry E. Marchant and Joseph L. Marchant. Surviving in addition to his wife, to whom he married on June 4, 1954, are two sons, Bill Marchant of Ohio and Brandon Marchant of Staunton; a daughter, C. Marie Chance of Montebello; a daughter-in-law, Carrie Marchant of Johnson City, Tenn.; a brother and sister-in law, John Marchant and his wife, Linda, of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Norma Hart and her husband, Bill, and Shelby Powell and her husband, Robert, all of Marion; five grandchildren, David, Channing and Madison Marchant, David and Brian Wrenn; two great-grandchildren, Mason and Montana Wrenn, and a number of nieces and nephews. PHELPS, Anna M., 74, of Crewe, died Tuesday, September 29, 2009. She is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, C.E. "Bo" Phelps. Anna was born in Appomattox County January 21, 1935, the youngest daughter of the late Samuel Thomas and Virginia Spradlin Megginson. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Deborah Tate and husband, Brian, of Yorktown, Va.; two grandchildren, Adam Tate and wife, Amanda, and Drew Tate; two brothers, John Megginson and Wallace Megginson and wife, Margaret, of Appomattox; two sisters, Edith Williams of Appomattox and Jean Nash of Brandon, Miss. One brother and three sisters preceded her in death, Riley T. Megginson, Molly Megginson, Lucy Gilliam and Nancy Hughes. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home, Thursday, October 1. ROLFE, Norman

ROLFE, Norman, 85, passed away on September 28, 2009. He was born May 29, 1924 in New York City and lived there until he entered college at the University of Richmond. In his freshman year, Norman met his future wife, Bertha Cohen, a high school senior. After serving in World War II, he returned to Richmond and married Bertha, to whom he was devoted for more than 63 years. Norman co-founded Southern Distributors, Inc., a wholesale sundry, toy and school supply business, and served as president of the firm for many years. In retirement, he volunteered at the Massey Cancer Center Library at Stony Point, serving patients with good cheer and wisdom, and often side-by-side with Bertha. Norman battled non-Hodgkins lymphoma for more than 15 years. Norman's greatest joy was being with his children, grandchildren and extended family and lifelong friends. In addition to Bertha, he is survived by his son, Robert M. Rolfe; daughter, Robin R. Partin; son-in-law, Richard N. Partin; former daughter-in-law, Catherine S. Rolfe; grandchildren, P. Alexander Rolfe and his wife, Aparna, Asher B. Rolfe and his wife, Douglas, Joel A. Rolfe, Zachary A. Rolfe, Nathan M. Partin and Seth J. Partin; great-granddaughter, Molly Rolfe; his sister and brother-in-law, Adele and Sheldon Safran; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lillian and Seymour Dworsky; numerous nephews and nieces. RYBACKI, Justin S., 62, of Richmond, passed away on September 28, 2009. He is survived by his mother, Valerie; sister, Mary Ann Zazzaro and her husband, Domenic; nephew, Jason Zazzaro and his wife, Victoria, and their children; and his niece, Lisa Zazzaro. He was predeceased by his father, Stanley Rybacki. Justin attended Seton Hall University and later received a Bachelor's Degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. While at SHU he was an integral member and brother of the Pershing Rifles National Honorary Military Society. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where, while serving at Richards-Gebauer AFB, was distinguished by receiving the "Airman of the Year Award." Farewells will be welcomed at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street on Thursday, October 1, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, October 2, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Rd. Lonnie Edgar Stiltner, Sr. Lonnie Edgar Stiltner, Sr., age 82 of the Thompson Valley Community of Tazewell, VA, found peace without pain on Sat., Sept. 26, 2009 surrounded by his family at his home. Born Oct. 5, 1926 in Buchanan County, VA, he was a son of the late Annon and Carrie Mullins Stiltner. Mr. Stiltner began working when he was 13 years of age after his father was seriously injured in a coal mining accident. He was proud to have worked in the Appalachian coal mines for 30 years and in the carpentry field for the remainder of his life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Christine Stiltner, and one brother, Clarence Stiltner. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Priscilla Johnson Stiltner; three daughters, Marion Plaster and husband, Jack, of Amissville, VA, Mildred "Kitten" Short of Manassas, VA, and Alice Wallwork and husband, Nicholas, Sr., of Charlottesville, VA; five sons, Lonnie Stiltner, Jr. and wife, Linda, and John Phillip Stiltner and wife, Shearlee, all of North Tazewell, VA, Larry Stiltner and wife, Jeanne, of Midland, VA, Leon Stiltner and wife, Laurenda, and Paul Stiltner and wife, Teresa, all of Thompson Valley, VA; two sisters, Flora Jean Ratliff of Thompson Valley, VA, and Geraldine Browning and husband, Ernest, of Bluff City, TN; one brother, Clyde Stiltner of Thompson Valley, VA; 15 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren. WINSLOW, Elizabeth Bryant, 93, born and raised in her beloved Isle of Wight County, Virginia, died in the loving comfort and peace of Hospice of Virginia at Retreat Hospital in Richmond, September 29, 2009. She was predeceased by her parents, George Grover Bryant and Georgie Hall Bryant; her husband, Thurman B. Winslow; and her sister, Nancy B. Dodson. Mrs. Winslow was a member of Smithfield Baptist Church for 75 years. Her family was one of the founders of Mill Swamp Baptist Church in Isle of Wight, Virginia's oldest Baptist congregation. She was a graduate of Smithfield High School and Newport News Business College, worked for the agricultural extension agency and was secretary of Smithfield Baptist Church for many years. Mrs. Winslow volunteered with the Virginia Blood Service and was active in her church. She was devoted to and is survived by her daughters, Beth W. Butner and Ann Winslow, both of Chesterfield; her son-in-law, Lynwood Butner; her grandsons, Jonathan and Clay Butner; and her nephew, Scott Dodson of Suffolk. Funeral services will be graveside at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Smithfield on Thursday, October 1, at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held Thursday at noon, at 309 Jordan Drive, Smithfield.
