He was a skilled carpenter, building his family's wonderful home, helping build or adding to his children's' homes, and creating things like cradles for the granddaughters' baby dolls.


 


 

Albert L. Penn 

Oct 31, 2010 The funeral for Albert Lewis Penn, 62, of 200 Southland Drive, Martinsville, who died Oct. 28, 2010, at Memorial Hospital, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hines Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Harvey Penn officiating. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends a half hour before the service at the funeral home and other times at the home of his sister Nancy Sauls, 212 Spring St., Martinsville. He was born in Martinsville on Nov. 20, 1947, to Charlie Penn and Lenora Joyce Penn. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was a Marine Corps veteran and worked for the city of Martinsville for four years. Surviving are three sisters, Alberta Scales and Nancy Sauls, both of Martinsville, and Thelma Abbott of Richton Park, Ill; and one brother, James Penn of Martinsville.


 


 

Ann S. Haskell

Ann S. Haskell, Ann S. Haskell, 81, died peacefully in her sleep at home on Friday, October 22, 2010., She is survived by her husband, Richard Koepsell; and her three siblings, Paul "Blake" Sullivan of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Margaretta Smith of Ashburn, Virginia, and Glen Sullivan of Fredericksburg, Virginia. She is also survived by three of her four children, Constantine "Dean" Rasmussen of Ipswich, Massachusetts, Mark Haskell of Washington, D.C., and Gretl Rasmussen of Brooklyn, New York; by two loving daughters-in-law and six grandchildren., Ann was born in Washington, D.C., in 1929, and grew up in Arlington, Virginia. While raising three children on her own, she was among the first women to graduate from Clemson University and was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Graduate Fellowship. She received her Doctorate with honors from the University of Pennsylvania in 1964. She went on to teach at the English Department of the State University of New York at Buffalo, specializing in Chaucer and Medieval Life and Literature and in Children's Literature, for thirty-seven years. She was a mentor and advisor to hundreds of students whose lives and careers she enriched with her generosity and scholarship. Her many academic publications include the books, "Essays on Chaucer's Saints" and "A Middle English Anthology," which has been in print since 1969., Ann wrote Op-Ed columns, personal essays, and articles on food and numerous other subjects for publications such as the Smithsonian, the Washington Post, Baltimore Sun and New York Times. She maintained a home in Provence in Southern France for forty years and she and her husband taught a program abroad on the Culture of Provence., Ann leaves friends in Western New York, Charlottesville, Virginia, and Provence, France. She thanks the Gynecological Cancer staff at the University of Virginia.

Barbara Courtney Brumback

Barbara Courtney Moritz Brumback, Barbara Courtney Moritz Brumback passed away on Saturday, October 9, 2010, at Martha Jefferson Hospital with friends and family present., Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Robert N. Brumback; and her son, Craig., She is survived by one sister, Susan M. Gottlieb; and three children, John, Courtney and Natalie; along with one grandchild, Rachel Renne' Brumback Stanley., From the time Barbara arrived in this world on November 14, 1935, she was predisposed to challenge the world assertively. She was a young woman with astute intelligence and wit., She met her husband-to-be in Washington, D.C. and they married in 1961., Her work ascended in the direction of politics, which became her second love. Barbara became active in political campaigning, beginning with Barry Goldwater and carried on through out her life., She continued to work in Washington, D.C., until she and her family moved to Florida. Barbara then became a teacher, working in the Hendry County school system. She also became editor of the Caloosa Bell newspaper while working real estate part time in LaBelle, Florida., She and her family moved to Crozet in the summer of l980, where she took a job that would give her the most pleasure in her career. Along with some very prominent doctors, at the University of Virginia, she helped state the fledgling newsletter "For Kids Sake" as one of the editors and the news letter layout person. Also around the same time, along with her husband procured grant funding, to start the Virginia Relay Center phone system for the deaf and hearing impaired. Both accomplishments are now nationally known and have been adopted by almost every state in the union., Later she opened her own real estate office in the Crozet area, named Ivy West Realty Company, LLC. There she helped to serve the residents of the west side of Albemarle County with their real estate needs in the area she most deeply loved.When she retired from real estate, she helped children at the Sylvan Learning Center and was asked to be a guest teacher for the summer scholarship program to teach incoming students at Johns Hopkins University. She taught Civics., In the last years of her life Barbara lost her husband to cancer, and a son to a tragic incident in Mexico. She suffered with dementia, soon after Craig's death, and spent her final years in the loving adult care home of Mrs. Mary Ann Gibson, in Crozet., Memorial services will be held at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel, 5888 Saint George Ave., Crozet Virginia, 2 p.m. Saturday, November 6, 2010.

Barbara Scaggs CHESAPEAKE - Barbara Scaggs of the 4700 block of Gratton St., passed away Oct. 29, 2010. She was born at Ball State University Hospital Sept. 17, 1938 to the late Rev. Lebern Belmer and Alice Carol Johnson in Muncie, Ind. She was predeceased by a son, William Scaggs; a granddaughter, Audrey; and a sister, Annabel Harrell. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great- grandmother to her family, which was her "full time" career. Several of her granddaughters referred to her as their most trustworthy confidant and best friend. Barbara was a faithful wife to her career Navy husband and always opened her heart and home to military families, friends and neighbors everywhere. Barbara is survived by her husband of 52 years, Jerry Scaggs; her three sons and their wives, Sammy and Beverly Scaggs of Chesapeake, Joseph and Sharon Scaggs of Chesapeake, and Bruce and Marleaux Scaggs of Chesapeake; nine grandchildren, Rebekah, Sarah, Amanda, Seanne, Kelly Jo, Jake, Elizabeth, Bruce Jr. and Caitlin; as well as five great-grandchildren, Ethan, Joel, Travis, Logan and Amiah. Also left to cherish her loving memory are her four brothers, Elmer Johnson of Muncie, Ind., Jim Johnson of Muncie, Jerry Johnson of Horton, Ala., and Darrell Johnson of Woodstock, Ga.; along with two sisters, Nancy Venturo of Atlanta and Charlotte Stultz of Harper City, Ind. She will be missed by her family and friends but they are happy that she is now with the Lord and in His presence from this day forward. Her celebration of life service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1, at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman's Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. The Rev. Sammy Scaggs, the Rev. Keith Miller and the Rev. Harold Buckwalter will officiate. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. BOWERS, Daniel Russell, 64, of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C., formerly of Mechanicsville, Va., passed away on October 28, 2010, at Agape Hospice in Conway, S.C. Born on April 9, 1946, in Omaha, Neb., he was the eldest son of the late Dr. Russell Vernon and Jeanne Matthews Bowers. Daniel was a loving and devoted son, husband and father. He was an active participant in the Boy Scouts of America, a loyal member of the Hanover Ruritan Club, Mechanicsville, Va., and South Strand Ruritan Club, Myrtle Beach, S.C. Mr. Bowers also proudly served in the Virginia Air National Guard for 23 years before retiring as a Master Sergeant in 1990. Dan was raised in Richmond where he attended Highland Springs High School and went on to graduate from Lynchburg College. He retired from Cliff Weil, Inc. in 1999 and spent the last 11 years with his wife in South Carolina. Before his illness, Dan loved to hunt, cook, play golf and garden. Mr. Bowers is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Elizabeth "Betty" Johnson Bowers of N. Myrtle Beach, S.C.; son Christopher R. Bowers of Ellicott City, Md.; daughter Amy E. Bowers of Mechanicsville, Va.; two brothers, John M. Bowers of Las Vegas, Nev., and Robert D. Bowers and wife, Malinda, of Chesterfield, Va.; two sisters, Pamela Atkinson and husband, Steve, of Richmond, Va.; and Martha Bowers of Las Vegas, Nev.; as well as many nieces and nephews. Dorothy retired after 40 years of service as a teacher assistant with the Norfolk public school system. She was predeceased by her brothers, Matthew, Daniel and Joseph; and her sisters, Magndia and Emma. She is survived by two daughters, Benita Benson Hercules (Adolphus) of Roswell, Ga., and Vanessa Hodges (Joseph) of Chesapeake; one son, Johnnie W. Benson Jr. (Felicia) of Chesapeake; one sister, Jean Willis of Willow Grove, Pa.; grandchildren, Tiffany Tyson, Joseph Hodges, Cyndi Hodges, Johnene Benson, Johnét Benson, Johnathan Benson and Johjuan Benson; great-grandchildren, Kelye, Autum, Corey, Malorie, Cyanna and Cameron; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Jack was a veteran of three wars and was proud to be in the Navy. He was an active member in the Knights of Columbus and an active member of Holy Spirit Parish. Jack is survived by his family: sons, Brad Harvey of Virginia Beach and Hal Harvey of Naples, Fla.; sisters, Janet Hussong (Jerry) of Englewood, Ohio, and Janice Hamrick (Roger) of London, Ohio; brother, Norman Harvey (Carol) of Dublin, Ohio; and grandson, Taylor Harvey of Chesapeake. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at noon Tuesday, Nov. 2, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church by Fr. Tim Kuhniman. Interment will be at a later date. He was also for 24 years the conductor of the Teaneck Summer Band. He was especially proud of forming and conducting The Second-Wind Band, a band for seniors, in Charlottesville, Virginia. Harold attended Waynesboro High School where he excelled in baseball. He completed a four-year apprenticeship, as a machinist, in Norfolk Naval Shipyard and served 15 years as Sup-Ship supervisor at Portsmouth. Harold retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth after 39 years of service. He served five years as a sergeant in the U.S. Army, stationed in Fort Lee, Va., and Fort Myer, Va., Tank Division "Old Guard"; South Korea, Fort Benning, Ga., Camp Rooker, Ala., Fort Jackson, S.C., and Camp Gordon, Ga. For the past 26 years, Harold served as president of Jackson-Hewitt Tax Franchise. Helen will always be remembered for her love and devotion to her late husband, Johnny, and the insistence to live her life independently and only as "she" wanted. Helen was predeceased by John B. Jackson, her best friend and husband of 47 years. She is survived by her four children, Kathryn Ward, John Paul Jackson, David Jackson and Lisabeth Woodruff. Helen is also survived by her four grandchildren, two sisters, two brothers and several nieces and nephews. Herman Charity Jr. CHESAPEAKE - In the calm and early morning hours of Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010 Herman Charity Jr. departed his earthly existence as peacefully as he lived. He resided in Chesapeake with his wife, Eva Charity. A Norfolk native, Herman was born March 27, 1921, in Lamberts Point. He was the son of the late Herman and Bessie Charity. He was the elder of two children and was preceded in death by his brother, Dawson Charity. Herman was a true family man, a chef connoisseur and fisherman extraordinaire. Herman worked tirelessly to provide for his family working at the Norfolk Naval Air Station as a pipefitter for more than 40 years. He was also a member of New Mount Zion Church of God Holiness. Affectionately known as "the dynamic duo," Herman and Eva were married for 69 years. From this union three children were born, Herman A. Charity, Alfreda O. Charity and Beverly C. Jackson. Known for his quiet manner, yet strong gentle spirit he dedicated his life to providing for others. Herman is survived by his primary caregiver, devoted and loving wife, Eva Charity; a son, Herman A. Charity; two daughters, Alfreda O. Charity and Beverly C. Jackson (Vashon); four grandchildren, Alfred S. Charity (Celeste), Tamara Charity-Brown (Carlos), Bev-Freda L. Jackson and Evmarian J. Cabey (Myron); and nine great-grandchildren in addition to a host of extended family, friends and loved ones. James Loving

LOVING, James M., 86, of Chesterfield, Va., died October 29, 2010. He enjoyed sailing, camping at the beach, tending his vegetable garden, fixing up old cars, reading (especially books about the Civil War), spoiling his dogs, proving that anything could be fixed with epoxy and duct tape and helping out at Beulah United Methodist Church, where he had been a member since 1963. Born in Alderson, W.Va., on April 12, 1924, he was the son of Hyter Anderson Loving and Lena Mann Loving. He grew up in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. He attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Va., from 1941 to 1944, leaving to serve in the Naval Reserve/Merchant Marines, helping escort convoys across the North Atlantic during World War II. He returned to VPI in 1946 and graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1947. He played trombone in the Highty Tighties at VPI and had played a trumpet in a dance band in high school. He worked his entire career for Westvaco, beginning at the mill in Covington, Va. In 1956, he was chosen to manage the company's plant in Valinhos, Brazil. He and his family moved to Campinas, Brazil, where he learned to speak Portuguese and traveled extensively in South America. He belonged to the local Lions Club. Returning to Virginia in 1962, he worked at the Richmond plant, serving for many years as manager. He ended his career as manager of building and environmental services for facilities on the East Coast. After retirement, he spent many years doing volunteer maintenance work at Beulah Church, enjoying his many hobbies, traveling across North America with his wife in their camper and spending time with their children. He was a charter member of the Greater Richmond Sailing Association. He and his wife, Harriett McAllister Loving, had just celebrated their 63rd anniversary. Survivors also include a daughter, Susan J. Loving of Strasburg; sons, William D. Loving of Richmond and James F. (Carey) Loving of Warrenton; and one grandson, Jamie Loving. An only child, he enjoyed close lifelong friendships with many of his first cousins. James R. Henderson IV NORFOLK - James J. "Jay" Henderson IV, 61, died Oct. 9, 2010 in Richlands, Va. Born in Raleigh, N.C., he was the son of Anna S. Henderson and the late James R. Henderson III. Jay was educated in Norfolk Public Schools and graduated from Maury High School, Old Dominion University and the University of Virginia Law School. He practiced law in Washington, D.C., and Southwestern Virginia for more than 35 years. Jay was also an avid blogger, his blog "Backcountry Notes," was generally about the history, geography, and mores of Southwestern Virginia, an area he dearly loved. He was described by fellow bloggers and readers as being wise, witty, and gentle, as well as being a great writer. An avid fisherman, Jay was a longtime member of Trout Unlimited. Left to cherish his memory besides his mother are his wife, Leslie Hibbitts Henderson of Richlands, Va.; a daughter, Gabrielle deCourcy of Tazewell, Va.; a son, James R. Henderson V of Norfolk; three sisters, Lee H. Lewis and her companion Tony Colon of Raleigh, N.C., Meredith H. Heywood and her husband Mark of Whynot, N.C., and Leslie H. Jean Lee Hill Woods, Jean Lee Hill Woods, 94, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 23, 2010., She had a long, full, and active life. Her positive outlook, sunny disposition, and good humor endeared her to all she met. She was a loving and inspiring role model, aging gracefully and fulfilling her important role in the life of her immediate and extended family., Jean moved to the Colonnades in 1995 where she led a very active social life and enjoyed frequent visits with her family. In recent years, her favorite activity was playing bridge as often as six days a week with a group of wonderful friends and partners., She was born on December 31, 1915, in Charleston, West Virginia, daughter of Frank Jarrett Hill and Lillian Haines Hill of Alderson, West Virginia. Her father graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1906. Jean graduated from Charleston High School in 1934 and was married in 1938., In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Reginald Foster Woods Jr., who died in 1977; her infant daughter, Nancy Carolyn Woods, who died in 1947; and her sister, Mary Frances Hill Robertson, who died in 2003., She is survived by her son, Reginald Foster Woods III and his wife, Katharine Norden Woods, of Keswick. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Eric Arthur Woods and his wife, Sanya Lloyd Woods, of University City, Missouri, Elizabeth "Beth" Terry Woods Boyer and her husband, Kevin Michael Boyer, of Charlottesville, and Tracy Lee Woods Metz and her husband, Joshua Lee Metz, of Charlottesville; and three great-grandchildren, Morgan Lee Metz, Ainsley Lachlan Boyer and Katharine May Metz. She is also survived by her second cousin, Harriet Hodges Mohler of Charlottesville, and an extended family of nieces and nephews, and their children, to whom she remained very close throughout her life., Jean's family wishes to thank the management and staff of the Colonnades for her many happy years there, Dr. Diane G. Joyce Alexander Perry, Our beloved grandmother, mother, sister, aunt, wife and friend, Joyce Alexander Perry, passed away peacefully from natural causes on Monday, October 11, 2010, at the young age of 87., Born in Mooresville, North Carolina, on May 30, 1924, Joyce was the youngest of 14 girls and grew up to be the loving wife of the late William R.; Perry and dedicated mother to Linda Perry Tebault and LIbby Perry Sykes. Throughout her years, she lived in Waynesboro, Virginia, Greensboro, North Carolina, and for the last 13 years, Richmond, Virginia. For 20 years she served the Waynesboro Public School system as secretary to the superintendent and later worked for ITT in Charlottesville and Virginia Beach Federal Credit Union. Upon moving to Richmond, Joyce became the oldest employee of Pink in Carytown, assisting the owners as an administrative assistant. Always the social butterfly, she seldom showed up to an engagement without her famous cheeseball in tow or in costume, depending on the holiday. Joyce's love of life could clearly be seen by the sparkle in her eyes, her magnetic smile, her singing, the spring in her dancing feet and her unyielding will to give to numerous charitable causes. She was always bringing people together, whether for family reunions, cookouts, singalongs or any other event she could coordinate., Most of all Joyce looked for countless ways to bring joy and laughter and meaning to the lives of those she loved., Joyce is survived by her two sisters, Grace Alexander Poston of Tulsa Oklahoma and Julia Cornelius of Vero Beach, Florida, her two daughters, Linda Perry Tebault and Libby Perry Sykes of Richmond, Virginia; her three grandchildren, Danielle and Alex Tebault and Jaime Ridolphi of Richmond, Virginia, and countless wonderful nieces, nephews and friends., In lieu of flowers, please donate to the SPCA (for her love of animals), the or a charitable organization of your own choosing., The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Westport Rehabilitation and Nursing Center on Forest Avenue for taking such impeccable care of Joyce until her very last days. June Goldstein passed away on Friday, October 29, 2010., She was born on June 8, 1927, in New York City, New York, to Sarah and Leonard Kirsch. She moved to Charlottesville in 2005 and has subsequently moved through many levels of care in our area nursing care industry. Through it all, she maintained a tremendous level of dignity, kindness and was well loved by the care givers in each establishment., After living in New York, Maryland, and Connecticut, she retired to Florida with her husband of 52 years, the late Milton Goldstein. When she arrived in Charlottesville, she had already been battling Parkinson's Disease for twelve years. She was immediately greeted with new nicknames of affection: June Bug, Juney, Miss June, and was treated with Southern hospitality. Her greatest accomplishment in her last years was to befriend a new best friend and care giver, Debbie Graves. They went everywhere together, with or without medical approval, and they were a variation on the story of Thelma and Louise and they will miss each other greatly., June' survivors include her brother and his wife, Dr. Sandford and Gloria Kirsch of Chappaqua, New York; her sons and daughters-in-law, Doctors Mark and Michele Goldstein-Masliah of New York, New York, Larry Goldstein and Daria Okugawa of Charlottesville, Virhinia, and Jeff Goldstein and Carrie Inoshita of Boulder, Colorado. She is survived by ten grandchildren and stepchildren, two great-grandchildren and an extended family of nieces and nephews., Throughout her life, June was a people person, offering an empathetic ear and good counsel to all. She was a tremendous home maker with impeccable taste and a Life Master bridge player. Her ultimate joy was providing for her children and her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by those who felt her generosity and playfulness. Survivors include her daughter, Terry Wilhelm and husband David of Virginia Beach; two granddaughters, Meredith and Allison; a niece, Roxy Marshall and her daughter, Melanie; nephews, Bubba Marshall and wife Cathy, Duane Marshall and wife Debbie and son Duane; and numerous cousins and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Dillard "Dee" B. Minter; and a daughter, Maureen Minter Gravely. She lived in Henry County from 1968 to 1981. She attended First Presbyterian Church of Collinsville. She helped raise Gail Ronan of Allen Park, Mich. Surviving are a son, Daniel B. Minter of Plainfield, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will hold a private graveside service. Paul Merle Brant Jr., Paul Merle Brant Jr., 68, of Scottsville, Virginia, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, October 13, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center., Paul was born on June 4, 1942, on the family farm at Brantville in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, to the late Paul M. and Garnet May (Whitlock) Brant Sr., He graduated from Greenbrier High School in 1960, and went on to receive a Bachelors Degree in Forestry from West Virginia University, a Masters Degree in science from Marshall University and was a Fellow of the Agricultural Policy Institute at North Carolina State University. While he was proudly a native of West Virginia, he lived in Charlottesville, Virginia, from 1995 until 2009. He moved to Scottsville, Virginia, in the late summer of 2009., Paul passed on many wonderful life lessons, love and memories to his children, friends and family., Paul is survived by his son Geoffrey Earle Brant and his daughter, Amy Brant Lambert, of Scottsville; two granddaughters, Brittany Ann Cominos and Brant Jae Lambert, also of Scottsville, Virginia; his brother, Alan Edward Brant of Grassy, Missouri; his sister, Linda Kay (Brant) Papa, of Bluefield, West Virginia. He is also survived by his niece, Tracy Marie Brant; and his great-niece, Garnet May Davies of Sydney, Australia; his nephews, Carmen Anthony (Marsie) Papa III and two great-nephews, Braden and Lucas, all of Raleigh, North Carolina; and Shawn Alan (April) Papa, great-niece, Taylor, and great-nephew, Ethan, all of Bluefield, West Virginia; as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by wife, Leslie Ann (Dornblazer) Brant., Throughout his life, Paul was a faithful member and a humble volunteer for numerous community organizations. Paul was a long time advocate and promoter of local, sustainable food and agriculture, and was currently serving on several community development projects. During his 30+ year career with the USDA/ Soil Conservation Service, Paul assisted small farmers, businesses and community organizations achieve conservation and sustainable development goals, and he was keenly aware of the economic and environmental realities of achieving these goals. Mr. Blondino was retired from the Intermet Archer Creek Foundry after 27 years of service. He was a member of Randolph Memorial Baptist Church and of Woodmen of the World. He loved his family and his church family. Mr. Sexton was a retired auto mechanic for 30 years, having worked at Don's Garage in Abingdon, Jay Johnson Chrysler in Bristol, Campbell Ford in Abingdon, and Crabtree Pontiac in Bristol. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing, but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a sister, Katheryn Gail Sexton; and a brother, Charles "Corky" Sexton. MADISON, Stuart Carl "Peck," 89, of Richmond, passed away October 30, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Louise S. Madison; sister-in-law, Mildred Atkins; brother-in-law, Alvin Sublett and his wife, Cleo; three nieces, Barbara Fralin, Carolyn Fralin and Angela Sublett; two nephews, Richard Atkins and Ivan Sublett. A special thanks to their close friends and neighbors, Pat and Robert Richardson for their loving devotion and commitment in caring for them on many, many occasions; special friends, Curtis and May Edwards for the wonderful goodtimes and memories from their vacations together; as well as the many other neighbors for their love, support and help during these special times. Thomas McAllister VIRGINIA BEACH - Thomas W. McAllister passed away Saturday, Oct. 23, 2010. Born in Queens, N.Y., he served in the United States Navy, was a veteran of the Korean War and retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield of New York. Thomas lived on Long Island, N.Y., and Crystal River, Fla., prior to moving to Virginia Beach. He was predeceased by his son, Kevin. Virginia Coleman

COLEMAN, Virginia, passed away October 30, 2010. She was born at Stevensville, King and Queen County on October 18, 1914. She was the last of her immediate family, a longtime, active member of Smyrna Christian Church and a member of King and Queen Jr. Woman's Club. She graduated from Stevensville High School, attended business school and retired in 1976. She is survived by a great-nephew, Robert Coleman; his wife, Melinda and their three sons; a niece, Marion Whitlow; three nephews, James, Edward and Ronald Coleman and a number of great-nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at B.W. White Funeral Home, 20408 King William Rd. on Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m., and where the service will be Monday at 11 a.m. Interment at Smyrna Christian Church. A daughter of Roy and Rowland Hudson of Moyock, N.C., she grew up in Williamston, N.C., and lived most of her adult life in Great Bridge. In addition to her parents, Vivian was predeceased by her husband of 20 years, Claude L. "Johnnie" Harlow and her first granddaughter, Kika Johnson. Vivian is survived by two daughters, Claudia Johnson and husband Steve of Norfolk and Sharon Gunn and husband Jay of Walters; one son, Joel Harlow and wife Winona of Indian Trail, N.C.; two brothers, Roy Hudson and wife Evelyn of Virginia Beach and Charles Hudson and wife Barbara of Sligo, N.C.; one sister, Doris Rose of Shreveport, La.; her beloved six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and longtime faithful cat "Leebie". A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 1, in St. Andrew's Episcopal Church by the Rev. John Rohrs. Willard served as President of the Virginia Association of Commonwealth's Attorneys, President of the Newport News Bar Association, an officer of the National Association of District Attorneys, and Chairman of the Virginia State Bar's Criminal Law Section. Additionally, he was selected to serve on the Virginia State Bar's Professionalism Course. Willard also received the Robert F. Horan, Jr. Outstanding Service Award from the Virginia Association of Commonwealth's Attorneys, which is the highest honor the Association bestows on its members.


 


 

William Brown

William Joseph Brown PORTSMOUTH - William Joseph "Buddy" Brown also known as "Barnacle Bud" of the 100 block of Constitution Ave., passed away at home surrounded by his loving family Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2010. He suffered a short bout with lung and spine cancer. He was predeceased by his father, William T. Brown (managing editor of the Portsmouth Star and author of the column the "Old Grouch") and his mother, Elizabeth Culpepper Brown. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Tiffany Brown and his sons, Michael Casey Brown, Stephen York; his sister, Anne Brown Kenney; and loving daughter-in-law, Crystal Brown; two grandchildren, Ryan York and Alexis O'Neil Brown. She misses her Poppa but knows he has gone to heaven. He was a retired top trouble shooter mechanic and head of security for Craftwork Sound. He was a lifetime member of the NRA and Virginia Game and Inland Fisheries. He loved to garden and was known throughout for his wonderful tomatoes and collards, which he shared with everyone. He was an avid fisherman and crabber. He had a passion for cooking and grilling and made the best barbeque anywhere. He was raised on Scotts Creek, where he learned to fish, swim and row. A member of his family has been part of Scotts Creek since the early 1600s when they purchased land from the King of England with tobacco. He was very proud of his Irish heritage. He was a loving father, husband and grandfather. He never met a stranger and went out of his way to help all. He loved animals and has left behind two beautiful boxers, Katie and Buster, who are grieving his loss. He was a student of life and a great teacher - he loved history and all kinds of music. He will be gravely missed, our lives will never be the same without him. Heartland Hospice was with us during his last six weeks and we could not have asked for anything better, kinder, and more loving than they provided. William S. Latimer II

LATIMER, William S. II, born August 5, 1938, passed away on October 25, 2010, at age 72. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Sandra Simpson Latimer. He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Latimer; his children, Julie Latimer Hicks, Vicky Latimer Hodge, Kathy Latimer Steel and William S. Latimer III; eight grandchildren; and sister, Ann Latimer. Bill served in the Marine Corps from September 1961 to August 1967. He was a dedicated field agent for the IRS for over 33 years, and best known for coaching Chesterfield Little League baseball and football. Memorial services will be held at Swift Creek Baptist Church on 5 p.m. Thursday, November 4, 2010. The family will receive friends at 4 p.m. and at the service.

William T. Biskup William T. Biskup, 56, of Evington, passed away Friday, Oct. 22, 2010. He was born March 11, 1954, in Blue Island, Ill., to Thaddeus and Elizabeth Nee Iwanski Biskup, who preceded him in death. Mr. Biskup is survived by his sister, Agnes (Andrew) Krajewski; nieces, Stefanie (fiancĂ‚‚, Zach Love) and Elizabeth; his family at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lynchburg; two aunts; two uncles; and many cousins and friends. A life member of the NRA, he graduated from Marist H.S. in 1972 and attended Moraine Valley C.C. He was a cook at the Hilton Garden Inn in Lynchburg. He was also working on the 'Great American Novel' and belonged to writing clubs in the Chicago area before moving to Virginia in 1998.
