Verna Cook Abbatello, 69, of Roanoke County, Va., went to be with her Lord on Thursday afternoon, November 13, 2008, at her home with her family beside her. Verna was a retired cosmetologist and was preceded in death by her parents, Clint and Frances Cook; her sisters, Hazel Kinsley and Lula Chadwick; and her brother, Henry Cook. Surviving is her husband of 20 years, George A. Abbatello; her daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and Chuck Dangerfield, of Hardy, Patricia and Charles Arnold, of Binger, Okla., and Donna and David Culicerto, of Roanoke; her sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Barbara Abbatello, of Naperville, Ill., and John and Kara Abbatello, of Palm Harbour Fla.; her grandchildren, Kyle and David Dangerfield, Dustin and Marc Bailey, Bruce, Brandon, Jonathan, and Nathan Abbatello, Tyler Henderson, and Matt and Will Culicerto; a great-grandson, Nathan Bailey; her brothers, Walter Cook, of Troutville, Braxton Cook, of Fincastle, Gene Cook, of Indianapolis, Ind., Jerry Cook, of Roanoke, and Leslie Cook, of Vinton; her sisters, Isabel Thompson, of Indianapolis, Ind., and Dorothy Robertson, of Fincastle; and numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, November 17, 2008, at St. Andrews Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. Thomas G. Miller officiating. ARNETTE, Edmund Cecil, 76, of Richmond, a native of Hendersonville, N.C., died Thursday, November 13, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Martha Edwards Arnette; three sons, Tim and his wife, Linda, Bruce and his wife, Laura, Andy and his wife, Kim; two grandsons, Matthew and Daniel Arnette; one sister, Elaine Earl and her husband, Ken; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Arnette was a member of Ginter Park Presbyterian Church and served two years in the U.S. Army. He worked for Bethlehem Steel for 31 years, then with Chesterfield Trading Company until he retired in 2002. Nov 14, 2008 Bessie L. Lyle, 81, of 61 Scott Bypass, Bassett, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. She was born in West Virginia on Dec. 24, 1926, to William T. Keys and Goldie Scott Keys. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lyle; two sisters, Coretta Keys Oliver and Della Keys Wright; and a brother, Calvin C. Keys. She worked for a number of years at a private club in Akron, Ohio, and retired from the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., where she worked for many years. She was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church. Surviving are two sons, Roy Manns and Harvey Manns Jr., both of Akron; one brother, Everett Keys of Bassett; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hairston Funeral Home with the Rev. Thurman O. Echols Jr. presiding. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the service Sunday.

CARNEAL, Donald Warren "Duck", 59, of Chesterfield, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2008 at his residence. He was preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Mary Beasley Carneal; and a brother, Wayne. Duck, as he was known by, served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, and was the recipient of the Purple Heart. He retired after 34 years as a truck driver. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sue; daughters, Christy, Stephanie, and Carol; brothers, Larry (Debbie), Steve (Teresa); sisters, Mary (Moody), and Debbie Sue (Charles); along with several nieces and nephews. Elizabeth Natalie DeHart Carter, 90, a resident of Brandon Oaks in Roanoke, Va., passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2008. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Walker Randolph Carter Jr. They were married for 53 years. She was the daughter of the late Emily Rose and Gabriel Gates DeHart Sr., and during her lifetime was a resident of Salem and Roanoke, Va. She was also predeceased by four brothers Gabriel Gates (G.G.) DeHart Jr., Lloyd Elmore DeHart, George Rae (Red) DeHart, and Eugene Overacre DeHart., She is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Emilee and Gordon (Ted) Garman, of Roanoke, Va.; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Dan Eitner, of Smith Mountain Lake; and daughter and son-in-law, Natalie and Dudley Woody, of Roanoke. She was a sweet and loving "Mimi" to her granddaughters, Emilee (Lee) Garman, Natalie (Cathie) Garman Shellnut and husband, Ricky, Lauren Woody Pickens and husband, Jim, of Gainsville Ga., and Nancy and Michelle Woody, of Roanoke, Va.; a stepgrandson, Steven Eitner, of Rocky Mount; and stepgranddaughter, Brianne Eitner, of Wake, N.C. She is also survived by three greatgrandchildren, Mikah Secrist, Julian and Isabella Shellnut, of Roanoke, Va. Also surviving are beloved and dear nieces and nephews, Betty Lloyd Stanley and husband, Levon, of Melbourne, Fla., Susan O'Hara and husband, Pat, of New York, Gates DeHart Ill and Thomas DeHart, of Roanoke, Va., and George Rae DeHart Jr., of New York., She and her husband, Walker, were the first residents to move into Brandon Oaks 15 years ago. She loved her life there, enjoyed being an active resident serving on numerous committees, and always looked forward to meeting new residents with her warm and welcoming personality. She was a very active and long time member of South Roanoke United Methodist Church which she dearly loved. Many years ago she and her husband served on the Search Committee to establish what is now Alta Mons Methodist Camp. She was a member and past president of the Women's Club of Roanoke, past member of Thursday Morning Music Club, and enjoyed attending the Roanoke Symphony performances. She attended Roanoke College, and was a graduate of Virginia Intermont College and Radford College. She was an early childhood educator, starting kindergartens in several Methodist churches in Roanoke. She was a master teacher in the Roanoke City School pilot kindergarten program establishing public school kindergartens. Being the loving mother and accomplished teacher earned her the honor of being named Mother of the Year in Education in 1979., 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 15, 2008, at South Roanoke United Methodist Church in Roanoke, Va., with the Reverend Bill Davidson officiating. Dewey, Fern Reichman

DEWEY, Fern Reichman, 89, of Powhatan, formerly of Bon Air, died November 13, 2008. Born in 1918 in Topeka, Kan., she was the survivor of 10 children. Beautiful, intelligent and ambitious, she followed two older sisters to the east coast, settling in pre-WWII Washington. During a visit to Philadelphia in 1942 at the USO, she met and fell in love with Air Force Sgt. Ray Dewey. They married in 1943. Sons, Ray Jr. and Jeff followed, then the three sisters and their families settled in New Jersey. She was preceded in death by Ray after 60 years of marriage. A transfer to Richmond resulted in a professional career featuring founding membership in the National Secretary Association and the Certified Professional Secretary designation. She retired as the administrative assistant to the President of Abbott, Proctor and Paine. Survivors include sons, Ray Jr. and his wife, Pat, of Powhatan and Jeff and his wife, Pat of Mechanicsville; grand-daughter, Allison of Mechanicsville; grandson, Mark and his wife, Jill, and their daughter, Virginia, of Powhatan; as well as countless nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. GLAZEBROOK, Robert V. "Bob", died Friday, November 14, 2008. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Marilyn; his daughter, Deborah Dandridge and her husband; his son, Glenn; five grandchildren; two great-grandsons; one niece; and three nephews. Bob attended Clark College, Newton, Miss., Randolph-Macon College, Ashland, and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He pastored Baptist churches in North Carolina and Virginia, including Spring Hill, Ruckersville, Va.; Oakland, Gum Spring; Morattico, Kilmarnock; and Falmouth, Fredericksburg. He considered visiting church members in their homes a very important part of his ministry and this endeared him to the congregations and he to them. A Memorial Service will be held at Powell Chapel, Second Baptist Church, 9614 River Road, Richmond, Va. 23229 on Wednesday, November 19, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Second Baptist Church.

GOODWIN, James "Jim" C. Jr., died November 11, 2008, after a lengthy illness. He was predeceased by his parents, Frances S. Goodwin and James C. Goodwin Sr. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Patricia "Trisha" Evans Goodwin; his brother, Jack S. Goodwin and his wife, Ellen, of Richmond; his brother, Kenneth "Buddy" Goodwin of New Orleans, La.; his sister, Jenny Duplantis of Slidell, La.; his mother-in-law, Mabel "Mickey" Evans of Richmond; and his sister-in-law, Carrie Lee Evans of Richmond. Dr. Goodwin received a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering and an MBA from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La. He earned a Ph.D in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Jim was employed as a Drilling Engineer by Chevron and Atlantic-Richfield in the 1960's. He taught in the business schools of Florida State University, the University of Louisiana-Monroe and Georgia Southern University. He joined the faculty of the University of Richmond in 1976, when the business school began an MBA program. He retired from U.R. as Professor Emeritus in May 2000. Dr. Goodwin was the author of National and International Academic Journal articles. He received the U.R.'s Distinguished Educator Award twice and was the only recipient of the Richard S. Reynolds Award (for positive influence on lives and careers) when he retired. He served as a consultant for many local, regional and national corporations and government agencies. He was an enthusiastic duplicate Bridge player and reached the ACBL rank of Silver Life Master. He was a great admirer of labrador retrievers and raised several, Cocoa and Shottie. The family will receive friends at the Parham Chapel-Woody Funeral Home, 1771 North Parham Rd. on Monday, November 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. Jim's remains have been cremated and a private family service will be held when all family is in the country. Jenny D. Gordeuk VIRGINIA BEACH - Jenny Dimitriyevna Gordeuk was born March 14, 1915, in Prozorovo, Tver Province, Russia, and died Nov. 12, 2008, in Virginia Beach. She is survived by one sister, Elizabeth Lewshenia of Peoria, Ill.; five children, David A. Gordeuk of Hobe Sound, Fla., Victor R. Gordeuk of McLean, Va., Anita R. Brennan of Virginia Beach, Elizabeth R. Caine of Williamsburg, Va., and Nancy G. Kondas of Virginia Beach; and by her daughter-in-law, Diane Gordeuk of Port Matilda, Pa. She is also survived by 15 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Gordeuk Jr. in 1999 and her son, Daniel in 2005. Jenny Gordeuk immigrated to the United States in September of 1929 with her parents, three brothers and four sisters. She worked for the Slavic Gospel Association for six years before marrying Stephen Gordeuk Jr. on June 9, 1946, in Beaver Dam, Wis., and lived in the State College, Pa., area for more than 50 years. She was a member of Brookside Wesleyan Church. After her marriage, Jenny Gordeuk continued to speak in many churches and Bible conferences regarding her family's escape from Stalinist Russia in 1929. She also produced a weekly radio program in the Russian language that was broadcast to Russia for more than 15 years. She appeared on the 700 Club on several occasions. In 1988, at the age of 73, she coordinated the sponsorship of five Russian Baptist refugee families to settle in the State College area, and this has resulted in the establishment of a Russian community and the Evangelical Russian Baptist Church in the area. She opened her heart and home to many throughout her life. Jenny extended hospitality to everyone she met from extended family and children's friends to ministers and missionaries. Her interests included baking, sewing, gardening, reading and outdoor activities. Visitation will be Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Koch Funeral Home, 2401 S. Atherton St., State College, Pa. Her funeral will be Monday at 1 p.m. in the State College Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, 1221 West Whitehall Road, State College, with the Rev. David S. During her spare time, she enjoyed writing and oil painting. She was preceded in death by her mother, Virginia Leber Luck; and her father, Curtis Ray Luck. She leaves behind her husband, Daniel F. Hoehn Sr.; daughter, Rebecca L. Hoehn (veteran of the Iraq War); sons, Daniel F. Hoehn Jr. (currently stationed at US Army Ft. Benning, Ga.) and Curtis A. Hoehn; sister, Charlotte Baker; brothers, Curtis W. Luck and Randall C. Luck; her best and closest friends include, Bonnie Marchetti, Jennifer Badaracco and Kelly Hartley. Rhonda graduated from Varina H.S., class of 1978. She attended Mohawk Valley Community College and Onondaga Community College. She received a degree in accounting as well as a CDA in childhood development. HULIHAN, Evelyn R., 87, a retired registered nurse and World War II veteran, died on November 14, 2008, at Henrico Doctor's Hospital in Richmond. She moved to Richmond in 2006 from Silver Spring, Maryland, and resided at Our Lady of Hope Health Center. Mrs. Hulihan was a native of Altoona, Pennsylvania. She served in the Army Nurse Corps during World War II as a First Lieutenant. She attended Catholic University on the G.I. Bill, and graduated in 1951 with a B.S. degree in Public Health Nursing. She married William J. Hulihan on August 30, 1952, with whom she raised six children. After 54 years of marriage, he preceded her in death on September 21, 2006. Survivors include her six children, Bridget (Kevin) Giblin of Garrett Park, Md., Deirdre Hulihan of Hendersonville, N.C., Cassandra Hulihan (Sean) McLaren of Richmond, Siobhan (Matthew Jadacki) Hulihan of McLean, Va., Christopher Hulihan and Patrick (Ellen) Hulihan, both of Richmond; and 14 grandchildren. Massad; her four children, Mary Jane Hogue and her husband, Harvey, Abe Massad, Liz Ashby and her husband, Conor, and John Massad Jr. and his wife, Cyndi; five grandchildren, Ashley Hogue Van der Waag and her husband, Warren, Alicia Hogue, Elizabeth Hogue, Ned Nielsen III and Peyton Massad; a great-grandson, Griffin James Van der Waag; and a host of devoted family and friends. Born September 20, 1946, in Danville, Va., John graduated from Virginia Tech with degrees in accounting. As a Certified Public Accountant, John worked for many years as assistant comptroller for the RF&P railroad. He ended his career with the Internal Revenue Service and retired to Asheville, N.C. WARD, Steven Ronald, of Roanoke, Va., departed this life on November 7, 2008. A native of Richmond, Va., Steve was born on April 11, 1948 and was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Francis Ward. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Gail Hasselmann Ward; in-laws, John and Verna Hasselmann of Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Jerry Eyster of Southport, Conn.; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Judy Ward of Chandler, Ariz.; and half-brother, William L. Ward of Augusta, Ga. In addition, Steve leaves behind many other sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. After serving six years in the Air Force Reserve, Steve worked most of his life in the automotive industry. He loved NASCAR, boating on Smith Mountain Lake and throwing darts at Perkys. His greatest gifts were his quick wit, keen sense of humor and his lifelong love of animals, especially cats. Gail and the family would like to offer special appreciation to those who cared for Steve during the final stages of his illness, especially the staff of 12 West-Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Raleigh Court Healthcare, and his sitter, Melinda Henegar. Thank you for giving him the dignity the disease sought to destroy. Wiggins, John Douglas

John Douglas (Doug) Wiggins, of Charlottesville, Va., died on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 12, 2008. Doug was born on October 1, 1946, in Roanoke, Va., and has blessed his beloved wife, three sons, two grandchildren, family, and friends with love, devotion, and generosity throughout his life., Doug was the oldest of three children born to the late John Jerome Wiggins and Violet Long Wiggins. He was a graduate of Roanoke Catholic High School, and held a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia, where he enjoyed playing rugby and lacrosse., Doug valiantly served his country in the United States Marine Corps and is a veteran of the Vietnam War during which he received a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, and Presidential Unit Citation., Doug was a devoted family man, instilling strong values of faith, honesty, and integrity in his children and grandchildren. He lived by his life philosophy of "do the right thing for the right reason and you never have regrets.", Doug was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and just being outside. He also was a member of the Single Action Shooting Society and enjoyed competitive shooting. He thoroughly enjoyed Cavalier sports particularly football, basketball, and lacrosse., Doug was a devote Catholic and faithful member of Holy Comforter Church. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Priscilla Ann (Pam); sons, Joseph Paul, John David and wife, Kristy, Adam Glenn Robert and wife, Jessie; and grandchildren, Robert and Rachel. He is also survived by his mother, Violet Long Wiggins, of Roanoke; sister, Dr. Diane Wiggins, of Roanoke; brother, Gary Wiggins, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and his mother and father-in-law, Robert and Terry Meyerhoff, of Hardy, Va., A funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, November 17, 2008, in the Holy Comforter Catholic Church. Nov 14, 2008 The funeral for Wilkie Lee Coleman, 64, of 675 Old Sands Road, Ridgeway, who died Nov. 11, 2008, at Lynchburg General Hospital, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Community Funeral Services' Ridgeway Chapel. Pastor Benny Dodson will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery in Ridgeway. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, and other times at the home of a nephew, Dexter Coleman, 413 Club House Road, Martinsville. Coleman was born in Grundy on Nov. 22, 1943, to Charles Bradford Coleman and Alice Walker Coleman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Billy R. Coleman. He was a retired contractor. Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Mary B. Coleman of Martinsville; three daughters, Rita Lewis of Archdale, N.C., Cheryl Coleman of Holden Beach, N.C., and Marsha Padgett of Martinsville; a son, John Coleman of High Point, N.C.; four sisters, Lucille Haynes of Ocala, Fla., Eloise Dodson of Wakeman, Ohio, Maggie Gauldin of Hickory, N.C., and Della Kay Vanover of Ridgeway; three brothers, Willard Coleman of Charleston, W.Va., Eugene Coleman of Mooresville, N.C., and Dale Coleman of Ridgeway; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Nov 14, 2008 The funeral for Willie F. Via, 94, of 732 Via Farm Lane, Patrick Springs, who died Nov. 12, 2008, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart, will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Community Funeral Home in Stuart. Pastor Sarah Doss, the Rev. David Bishop, the Rev. Ed Hartman and Ed Burch will preside. Burial will be in the Critz Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home. Via was born in Patrick County on Feb. 3, 1914, to Jessie Ben Via and Princess Joyce Via. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Mazie Lawson Via; two sisters; six brothers; and a step-grandson. He was a lifelong farmer and dealt in real estate and cattle trading. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church. Surviving are his daughters, Mary Paige Via of Williamsburg and Elizabeth Via Kolinski of Patrick Springs; one granddaughter; two step-grandchildren; sons, Clyde Nelson of Critz, Warren Nelson of Patrick Springs and Wilford Nelson of Tazewell; and many extended family members. WILSON, Anita C., age 67, of Glen Allen, passed Thursday, November 13, 2008. She is survived by her husband, Harvey Wilson; her children, Keith Marie Mahnken and her husband, Denis; William Dean Wilson and his wife, Mary, Vincent Edward Wilson and his wife, Christine, James Dennis Wilson and his wife, Laura, Brice Ray Wilson and his wife, Robin; 16 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Wayne Carter, Norma Tripp, Rudy Carter, Joanne Jordan, and Janet Jackson. Also her mother-in-law, Lena Wilson. Mrs. Wilson was a member of Skipwith Baptist Church. The family will receive friends 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home , 1771 Parham Road, where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday. Wooldridge, Margaret

Margaret D. Wooldridge NORFOLK - Margaret Mary Donovan Wooldridge died unexpectedly Tuesday afternoon, Nov. 11, 2008, at her daughter's home with her daughter by her side. A native of Norfolk, she was a graduate of St. Vincent DePaul Hospital School of Nursing. Upon graduation, she worked at the Veterans Hospital in Hampton, Va., as well as several VA hospitals in the state of New York while studying at Columbia University. She was the daughter of the late Mary Agnes Hope Donovan and William Francis Donovan Sr. She was predeceased by her sister, Catherine Donovan Johnakin and her brothers, William Francis Donovan Jr. and James Hope Donovan. She became the widow of James W. Wooldridge Sr., the love of her life, in November 2004. She is survived by her children, James W. Wooldridge Jr. and wife Joan of Midlothian, Margaret W. Bailey and husband Robert of Chesapeake, William D. Wooldridge of St. Petersburg and John J. Wooldridge of Norfolk. In addition, she is survived by her grandchildren, James W. Wooldridge III and wife Connie Jo of Glen Allen, David C. Wooldridge, Thomas M. Wooldridge and Katheryn Rose Wooldridge of Midlothian. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. The funeral liturgy will be celebrated Sunday at 2 p.m. in Christ the King Catholic Church by Fr. Brian M. Rafferty. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery Tuesday at 1 p.m. The family would like to express their deep gratitude to Dr. Herbert Brewer and his staff of Mrs. Brewer, Arlene, and especially Monica, for the loving, compassionate and highly skilled level of care our mother received. Woollard, Robert

Robert Woollard SURRY - Robert Woollard of Scotland Wharf passed suddenly from this life to a place of smooth swells and constant breezes Nov. 12, 2008. A native son of Portsmouth, Robert graduated from Churchland High School in 1968 and from Virginia Military Institute in 1972. Robert was active in his community and was owner of Scotland Wharf Enterprises. He was a member of the Surry Volunteer Rescue Squad and of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Surry. Quick with a smile, friendly to a fault, and always inquisitive, he was an irrepressible and skilled sailor, adventurer and traveler. He lived, sailed and visited throughout the world. He was a member of the crew that sailed a full-scale replica of the Jamestown ship Godspeed on its recreation of the voyage from England to Virginia, as well as numerous other blue water passages. Wherever Robert was, there was sure to be saltwater close by. It is difficult to gauge the positive impact that Robert had on nearly every life he touched. If he was around, it was impossible not to know and like him. And for all that he was, he was foremost a family man; for 25 years he was the beloved husband of Brenda; devoted father to Melissa McCarter, Melanie Hagan and her husband Mark, Amanda Woollard and Jake Woollard; dear son of Gertrude Colligan and the late Edwin F. Woollard; cherished brother of Eleanor Woollard and Paul Woollard; and loving grandfather of Cassidy Dietz, Michael Hagan, Benjamin Hagan and Laura Hagan. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Route 17, by the Rev. Jim Browder. There will be an opportunity to say goodbye to Robert and to visit with the family today from 5 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home. WRAY, James Thomas, 62, of Petersburg, passed away on Thursday, November 13, 2008. James was an employee of the City of Petersburg and a member of both the Colonial Hunt Club and Namozine Hunt Club. He loved the outdoors, which showed in his passion for hunting and fishing. He is survived by his son, William "Billy" James Wray and his wife, Colleen.
