Later, her family moved to Petersburg, Va., where she resided as a young adult. Being interested in the field of Nursing, she moved to Passaic, N.J., graduated from Passaic Nursing School, and then returned to Petersburg, Va. Henrietta lived an abundant life. Edith Cox Neel, 83, of Niceville, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at her home. A memorial service was held Friday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Niceville, Fla. Born Edith Alva Cox in a small cabin deep in the mountains of Bland County on Aug. 17, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Grady Woolwine Cox and the late Cleta Thompson Cox. In 1942, after graduating from Ceres High School at the age of 16, she packed her meager belongings into a tiny suitcase and left her mountain home for good. In her pocket jingled every bit of her money: nine silver dollars and one $5 gold piece. Her grandfather had given her the money. She never spent those dollars which will be given to her beloved grandchildren. Instead, she enrolled in a job-training program at Pulaski Hospital, eventually becoming one of the first X-ray technicians in Virginia. Years later, while working at a hospital in Gastonia, N.C., she met and married Emmett R. White, M.D. Together they raised three children in Valdese, N.C. Later in life, she married her high school sweetheart, Herman R. Neel. They settled in rural North Carolina, near Mockville. There for more than a decade, she led a quiet life and indulged in several of her favorite hobbies which included reading, sewing and gardening. In 1993, she and Herman moved to Niceville, Fla., and Virginia. Blessed with a sharp wit and even sharper intellect, she had a passion for history and geography. She also delighted in baking, crocheting, embroidering, making her famous bread and enjoying the company of her children and grandchildren. She loved bird watching, hated squirrels and was a crack-shot with a .22 rifle. Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Byrne, and her husband, Pat, of Niceville, Fla.; a son, E. Royce White Jr., and his wife, Gina, of Niceville, Fla.; a daughter, Millie Rothrock, and husband, Neil, of Wytheville; five grandchildren, Patrick Byrne III, CPT/USA, currently serving his country in Iraq, Michael Byrne of Niceville, Fla., and Lizzie Rothrock of Wytheville; a niece, Brenda Queen of Maysville, N.C.; and three stepchildren in North Carolina, Jeff Neel, Cathy Bumgarner and Joe Neel.
