Jun 24, 2009 The funeral for Abraham Lincoln Cobler, 99, of 1365 Snow Creek Road, Martinsville, who died June 22, 2009, at Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Norris Funeral Services. Minister Jim Compton will officiate. Burial will be in the Belcher family cemetery in Snow Creek. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Cobler was born in Franklin County on April 24, 1910, to John Edward Cobler and Mary Clarence Merriman Cobler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Belcher Cobler; a daughter, Mary Diane Craig; a son, Sidney Wayne Cobler; three sisters, Malinda Lawrence, Kate Jamison and Clara Gritz; and seven brothers, Harold Cobler, Ed Cobler, Alva Cobler, Frank Cobler, Orran Cobler, Henry Clay Cobler and Bill Cobler. He was a self-employed farmer, and he attended Trinity Baptist Church. Surviving are two daughters, Nancy Hairfield of Figsboro and Lois C. Keatts of Penhook; two sons, William "Kenny" Kenneth Cobler and Brent Lawrence Craig, both of Snow Creek; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Jun 24, 2009 Albert Noel Spencer, 98, of 375 Springhouse Lane, Bassett, died Monday, June 22, 2009, at Kindred Hospital in Greensboro, N.C. He was born in Patrick County on Aug. 8, 1910, to Peter K. Spencer and Berta Florence Martin Spencer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Callie Millie Spencer; a stepson, Ophus Eugene Robertson; five sisters, Berta Deal, Elsie Bryant, Maggie Bowman, Lera Bryant and Ellen Vaughn; four brothers, Johnny Spencer, Peter David Spencer, Roy Spencer and Obie Spencer; and a granddaughter, Moleta Howell. Surviving are one son, John Albert Spencer of Bassett; a daughter, Nancy Carol Stone of Bassett; a stepdaughter, Shirley Willard of Graham, N.C.; four grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Ms. Carolyn A. Brown, 52, of Petersburg went to be with her heavenly father on Friday, June 19, 2009, when God called her home. She fought a long battle of sickness with faith and now she has finished her race. Carolyn was born in Petersburg on Feb. 15, 1957, to the late James and Annie Brown. She graduated from Petersburg High School and was employed at Richmond Paper Co. and Manpower (Pre-Con). At an early age she accepted Christ. Carolyn was a member of Trinity Missionary Baptist Church of God In Christ. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Barbara Ann Brown; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy and Laura Harvell; a devoted friend, Natt Eric Reaves; and brother, James Terry. She leaves to cherish her memories, one son, Kenneth Brown; two daughters, Katrina and Temisha Brown, all of Petersburg; one sister, Kathy Hall (Wilbert) of Richmond; two brothers, Jerome Brown of Petersburg and Leon Brown of Richmond; one sister-in-law (devoted), Corine Brown of Petersburg; four grandchildren, Deshone Taylor Brown, Kae'shene, Jalosia, JaCorey Jones Jr., all of Petersburg; two uncles, George Harvell of Newport News, devoted John Harvell of Chesterfield; four aunts, Marion Graves, Olivia Grant, devoted Doris Thompson, all of Petersburg, and Helen Harvell of Chesterfield; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, among them , devoted friends, Paulette Jones, Dora Chappell and Carolyn Taylor; a very devoted aide, Effie Greene, and the staff of MCV and Ms. Dee, her transportation driver. Mr. Charles W. (Char-boy) Gray, of 529 Railroad Ave., Wakefield, Va., answered the Master's call on Sunday morning, June 21, 2009, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va. He was born in Southampton County, Va., on Jan. 31, 1947, to the late Henry and Elsie Gray. He confessed Christ at an early age and was baptized at the Union Hill United Church of Christ, Sedley, Va., where he was a lifelong member, serving in the Male Chorus. Charles was a gentle, kind and loving man who always had an open door to his home, helping anyone who was in need. He was a 1968 graduate of Central High School, Sussex, Va. Immediately after graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps serving his country in Vietnam for three years. He continued to serve his country for an additional 13 years in the reserves. He graduated from Virginia State (College) University in 1978. Charles retired from the Sussex County Sheriff's Department as sergeant with 19 years of service on March 31, 2003. He was a member of the Wakefield Town Council. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Alice Gay, Carrie Brown and Paige Gray. On June 9, 1973, he was joined in holy matrimony to Linda Ellis. Charles leaves to cherish his loving memory, wife of 56 years, Linda E. Gray; two daughters, Rita Mason and Cecila Holloman (Marcus) of Wakefield, Va.; one son, Charles A. Gray of Wakefield, Va.; six grandchildren, DeAnthony Mason, Ronlesha Jones, DeAndaz Gray, CeAshija Rawlings, Darryl Rawlings Jr. and CaeShaun Gray; godson, Dontae Stith; three sisters, Thelma Bain, Lora Bailey (Herbert) and Dorothy Gay (Fred) of Wakefield, Va.; two brothers, Joe Gray (Eunice) of Petersburg, Va., and Robert Gray (Cassandra) of Stone Mountain, Ga.; one uncle, Sammuel Hilliard of Wakefield, Va.; foster children, Nikkita Sumler and Shannon Johnson; six sisters-in-law, Christine Ricks, Marie Brock, Barbara Hill, Diann Sumler, Evon White (Melvin) of Surry, Va., and devoted Arlene Stith (Windell) of Southampton, Va.; two brothers-in-law, Mervin Ellis (Jeannie) of Wakefield, Va., and Leroy Ellis (Vera) of Queens, N.Y.; many nieces and nephews, among them one devoted nephew, Sterling Gray; and cousins, other relatives and friends. Rudolph Flemon Jones, 79, a native son of Franklin County, Va., died on Monday, June 22, 2009. Born in Callaway, Va., he grew up in the country learning the important things in life; sweet sunshine for chores in the early mornings and cool evenings for hunting with friends. His character was good, strong and loyal. He had common sense and a right dry wit. He loved his family, his friends and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Some of Rudolph's proudest accomplishments include; Boy Scout Leader, member of Franklin County Board of Supervisors, Babe Ruth League Baseball Coach, charter member of "The Board," President of the Employee Council at Dupont (Martinsville Plant), Jury Commissioner in Franklin County, member of the Governor's Council for Youth (Rotary) which became Franklin County Parks and Recreation, charter member and officer of the Callaway Rescue Squad, occasional member of the Blackwater Bluegrass Band, committee member for the Lifelong Learning Center at Phoebe Needles and member of the Gogginsville Methodist Church. He was a person well liked and respected, surrounded by friends, and enjoyed many, many good times., He is dearly loved and will be sorely missed by his wife, Molly; children, Donna Jones Wells (Tommy), and Phil Jones (Jill); stepson, Kasson Bratton (Olivia); grandsons, Jason Jones (Mackenzie), Drue Gray (Heather), and Justin and Michael Wells; sisters, Ina Messinger (W.D. Sr.), Juanita Howell, Estelle Jones, Christine Jones, and Geraldine Smith; and many nieces and nephews., He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Wright; and brothers, Ishmael and Stafford., s will be conducted 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 25, 2009, from Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Leslie F. Nelms Jr. SUFFOLK - Leslie Frank Nelms Jr., 82, died June 22, 2009, in Autumn Care Nursing Home. Mr. Nelms was born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, and raised in Nansemond County, Virginia. He was predeceased by his parents, Ida Harrell and Leslie F. Nelms Sr.; brother, Henley H. Nelms of Pennsylvania; and sister, Ruth Sykes of Suffolk. After a short tour of duty in the United States Army Air Force, he returned to Suffolk and finished his education at Suffolk High School. Leslie worked at Portsmouth Water Department for 43 years and retired as superintendent. He was a longtime member of the Izaak Walton League of America-Suffolk Nansemond Chapter, where he served in many offices and a member of the Knights of Pythians. He and his wife are longtime members of the Suffolk Christian Church. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Evelyn B. Nelms; son, Leslie F. Nelms III; daughter, Vicki Nelms Martin and son- in-law Kenny Martin; sisters, Edith Griffin of Hampton; sister-in-law, Bobbie H. Nelms of Lancaster, Pa.; brothers-in-law, Haywood W. She confessed Christ an early age and joined First Baptist Church of Jarratt, Va. She was employed by various businesses including Central State Hospital (Civic and Forensic). She had a phenomenal personality, willing to assist anyone in need! She had natural ability to manifest arts and crafts. She was also an avid flower grower. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald Parham Sr., and father, John Branch Sr. Deborah leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted son, Gerald Parham Jr. of Petersburg, Va.; devoted daughters, Charlene and Kiara Parham, both of Petersburg, Va.; granddaughter, Imai Lacy; a very devoted loving mother, Lottie O. Francis B. Price CLEVELAND, Tenn. - Mr. Francis Bernard Price, 83, of the 2400 block of Inverness Drive, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, June 20, 2009. A native of Surry County, Virginia, he grew up in the Berkeley section of Norfolk. Francis was preceded in death by his wife, Lois F. Price. He was a church music minister for 35 years at three Tidewater churches: Prentis Park Presbyterian, Green Acres Presbyterian, and Bethany Baptist. He was a well-respected and much loved piano and voice teacher in the Portsmouth area for 40 years. Francis was a graduate of Maury High School and Shenandoah Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music degree. He taught choral music at Brevard College for five years. The Lord blessed and gifted Francis with a beautiful voice and a passion for singing. He is survived by two daughters, Shannon P. Jones and husband Rob and Laura P. Perry; a son, Tim Price; and four grandchildren, Beth Horstick, Kenny Perry, Cassidy Jones, and Connor Jones. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Bethany Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Primm. Rogers Jr., Virgil Leighton

Virgil Leighton Rogers Jr., 92, of Roanoke, Va., passed away Sunday, June 21, 2009. He was born on January 7, 1917, in Roanoke, Va., the son of the late Virgil L. and Lena F. Rogers. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mary H. "Bette" Rogers;, and his son, Kevin L. Rogers. He is survived by his children, Leighton Rogers, of Roanoke, Stephen Rogers and his wife, Mindy, of Carolina Beach, N.C., Michelle Humrich, of Richmond, and Suzanne Miller and her husband, Rick, of Catawba. Also surviving are grandchildren, Elizabeth, Leigh and James Rogers, Greg Rogers, Jacob, Hannah and Olivia Humrich; and granddogs, Pete, Monk, Heidi, Lightnin', Bud and Jessie., during World War II, where he served as a corporal in the Army Air Force in Calcutta, India. Virgil was among the first to use radar technology to guide pilots back to base after transporting supplies over the Burma Hump. After returning from the war he continued his career at N & W Railway working in the general offices for 30 years. Virgil then began a new career in retail at S.H. Heironimus in 1964 where his merchandising skills, leadership abilities and ambition were quickly recognized. He was promoted to assistant manager at Towers, then was chosen to open and manage the new Crossroads branch store in 1967. In 1976 was promoted to vice president of operations for S.H. Heironimus, Inc. by the company board of directors, and fulfilled these duties until retiring in 1983. Virgil loved working at Heironimus where he was highly valued and respected by all. During his career, Virgil served in the Kiwanis Club, was on the board of directors for Downtown Roanoke, Inc., and was an honorary lifetime member of the Distributive Education Club of Roanoke. He was also a longtime member of the Beta Tau Fraternity. Virgil enjoyed playing golf, gardening, fishing and bird watching., In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to Good Samaritan Hospice of Roanoke, or do something Virgil would have enjoyed such as play a round of golf or feed the birds., will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2009, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. She is survived by her sister, Alverda "Johnny Bess" Rhudy; her son and his wife, Roger and Carole Foutz; daughter-in-law, Louise Dickey; stepdaughter-in-law, Betty "BJ" Swecker; stepdaughter, Maggie Bizelle; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; 12 stepgreatgrandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lois was born on May 10, 1905, in Elk Creek, Va., the oldest of eight children., She was a woman ahead of her time, graduating from Virginia Intermont College in 1925, with a certificate in music and a teachers diploma, first claiming jobs playing organ in the silent movies and teaching music., Mom lived her own love stories with three husbands and two sons. She spent the last 21 years of her career working at Mountain Trust Bank. Once retired, she kept her mind active by being a voracious reader, mostly romance novels, working cross-word puzzles, and creating beautiful hand crocheted afghans for almost everyone in her family. She was a wonderful country cook keeping her extended family well fed. She lived independently until she was 97 at which time she moved into Friendship Health and Rehab where she experienced compassionate care for her last seven years., Never so much truer a quote than in her college yearbook "In speaking of our little Lois, we can truly say, "Never was so rich a gem set in less than gold ..a young lady with an adorable disposition and winning personality. He returned to Vanguard University as professor of missions, anthropology and evangelism. In 1978, he took a position at CBN, in Virginia Beach in the division of international ministries and served for 12 years. He retired from CBN but continued to minister in numerous state side and international venues. In his ministries, he became fluent in French, Spanish and Haitian Creole. His family dearly loves him and will miss him. He is survived by his wife, Arleta J. Turnbull; a daughter, the Rev. Cheryl E. Vincent; three sons, Dr. Robert B. Turnbull, Richard D. Turnbull, BSEE, and the Rev. Stanley M. Turnbull; two brothers, the Rev. William D. Turnbull and the Rev. Wayne C. Turnbull; two daughters-in-law, Charlotte I. Turnbull, RN, and the Rev. Cheryl Y. WOODSON, Edward R. Jr., 88, of Mechanicsville, departed this life on June 23, 2009, to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Sr. and Hydenia Woodson. He is survived by his devoted wife of 67 years, Mable Lafoon Woodson; his children, Edward R. "Randy" Woodson III and wife, Sandra of Rainier, Wash., and Beverley C. Woodson of Ruther Glen, Va.; grandchildren, Christina Ackerman and husband, Douglas, of Covington, Wash., and Jaclyn Woodson of Olympia, Wash.; great-grandchildren, Joshua Woodson and Hannah Ackerman; caring friends, Nancy Will and Thomas Southard; siblings, Phillip and wife, Dorothy, Reinhardt and wife, Isabell, and Juanita Marchetti and husband, Andrew; his in-laws, Virginia Kenney, Peggy Daniels and husband, Roger; along with numerous nieces, nephews, their children and his friends in Christ. Mr. Woodson was a WWII veteran and served six years in the Army Reserves. After completion of his duty, he returned to his former employer, Miller Manufacturing Company and became a draftsman. Many of his designs can be seen in church windows, schools, universities and the judges' chambers in both court houses in Hanover County. He retired from Miller's after 45 years of service and worked for Lail Millwork for four and half years after retirement. He built the home that he and Mable shared for 61 years and raised their children. His remains rest at Atlee Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 9271 Shady Grove Rd., where visitation will be Wednesday, June 24, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and where services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. Interment Signal Hill Memorial Park. The family respectfully requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Henry District Fire Department #6 that came to Ed's aide on numerous occasions or to a charity of your choice. Mr. David "Toosie" Williams entered into eternal rest on Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. He was born on June 12, 1937, in Dinwiddie to the late Otis Sr. and Helen Taylor. Toosie was a fun loving and an outgoing person. He was the life of the party at all family gatherings. He was a construction worker for several companies throughout the years. Toosie was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Woods, Arthur and Reginald Taylor; and two sisters; Jeanette Kelly and Jacqueline Thorpe. He leaves to cherish his memories: five brothers, Ervin White (Janice) of Sutherland, Otis Jr., Wayne and Gary Taylor, all of Petersburg, Spencer Williams (Clara) of Tappahannock; four sisters, Beverly Pugh, Brenda Smith, Patricia Taylor, all of Petersburg, and Deborah Claiborne of Ford, Va.; one aunt, Estelle Cabey of New York; two brothers-in-law, Lee Kelly and Curtis Thorpe; one sister-in-law, Frances Taylor; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, great-nieces and nephews and friends, including a special friend, Marie Bland. Toosie will be greatly missed by all who new and loved him. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2009, at the Chapel of William N.
