She was a member of Rocksprings United Methodist Church., Alice was the beloved wife of Ronald Rowe of the home. In addition to her husband and her mother, she is survived by a daughter, Lauren Davidson of Hampton, Va.; a son, Eric Rangel and his partner, Sue Ellen Castle of Pearland, Texas; a twin sister, Ann Hendricks Stass and her husband, Sanford A. Stass, MD of Columbia, Md.; stepchild, Veronica Hopkinson and husband, James of Sterling, Va.; and several nieces and nephews., In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a brother, Steven Bert Hendricks; and a daughter, Alicia Rangel.


 


 

Alton D. MOORE

WILLIAMSBURG - Alton Dean Moore entered into eternal rest on Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, in Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center., His life began on June 28, 1942, the oldest of seven children born to Audrey Pearl Vines and the late Jimmy Moore of Edgecombe County, N.C., Alton was educated in the Public Schools of Edgecombe County. He was raised on a farm and mastered many talents in the working of a farm. His love for life was apparent to all who knew him. He loved his family and was the leader of his family. We all loved and enjoyed his cooking and on any given Sunday, we looked forward to Dean's special culinary dishes. His specialty was pork barbecue and ice tea. All the kids knew him as "Uncle Dean" and they would just visit "Mama Vines" just to get some of "Uncle Dean's" treats., He was a special kind of brother and we are truly blessed by his dedication and love for our mother, along with his sisters and brothers. Our big brother Dean, the Leader will be missed in so many ways., He was also preceded in death by his step-father, Jack L. Vines., His precious memories will always remain in the hearts of his sisters, Shirley Moore-Hopkins (Alfred), Patricia A. Vines-Mitchell, Emma L. Vines- Copeland (Leroy); his brothers, Jack A. Vines (Temple) and Jarvis E. Vines; his aunts, Clementine Darden, Virginia Vines and Odell Gorham; a host of other loving relatives and many caring friends., A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Mt. Alvin J. McGLOHN Sr.

Born in Crewe to Louis E. and Annie Sue McGlohn on July 24, 1928, his family moved to Newport News shortly after his birth and he had been a resident of the Peninsula since., He was an active member of North Riverside Baptist Church, an ordained Deacon, a member of the Andrew Sunday School Class and chaired the Transportation and Usher Committees for years., Mr. McGlohn was employed at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, beginning summer employment in 1945 and full time, as a Hull Designer, in 1947, becoming a Senior Hull Designer for 30 years. During these years, he worked on Contract Designs of several aircraft carriers at the Bureau of Ships in Washington, D.C. He also worked in the Atomic Power Division. He began his career at John J. McMullen & Associates in 1977, retiring in 1993, as a Section Manager. After retiring, he and June enjoyed traveling, taking many interesting trips with friends. Spending time with family and friends were his most enjoyed activities. Boating and water activities through the years were enjoyable activities as well as watching all sporting events, particularly the Redskins and the Yankees., Mr. McGlohn is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Leon E. McGlohn., He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, June Folkes McGlohn; and his children, Alvin (Jay) and his wife, Sharon, Louis (Jeff), and Julianne and her fiancE, Mike Marse. Also surviving are his devoted grandchildren, Trey and Patrick McGlohn, Ashton and James Phillip Clark, and Mike's son, Alex; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends, all who will miss him so much., The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, 2009, at Peninsula Funeral Home. Bailey, Robert

Robert W. Bailey VIRGINIA BEACH - Robert Wayne Bailey died Dec. 19, 2009. He was born in Claremont, N.H., on Feb. 17, 1927, the son of Wayne A. Bailey and Doris M. Bailey. After graduation from Stevens High School and the Eastman School of Music of the University of Rochester, with undergraduate and graduate degrees, he taught at Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia and Limestone College in South Carolina. He was professor emeritus at Wesley College in Dover, Del., after teaching there for 30 years. He was a member of the Delaware State Arts Council for 10 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in Italy with the 88th Infantry Division. He selected Virginia Beach for a retirement location. He is survived by a sister, Phyllis B. LaLiberte of Springfield, Mass., a nephew and three nieces. Services will be private. It was his wish that memorial contributions be made to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Billy Ray Comer BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. Billy Ray Comer, 61, passed away Friday, Dec. 18, 2009, at Wellmont Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Bristol Tennessee, he was a lifelong resident of the area, and was a maintainence supervisor for Touchstone Wireless. Bill was a Vietnam veteran serving in the U.S. Army, and also an avid horseman. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh Amos Mallett and Virginia Comer Mallett. Also preceding was a daughter, Becky Comer; and two sisters, Betty Comer and Bertha Manis. Survivors include sisters, Florence Chastain and husband Mitch, of Bristol Tennessee, and Pauline Vermillion, of Rogersville, Tenn.; brothers, Ray Mallett and wife Betty, of Johnson City, Tenn., and James Mallett and wife Liz, of Surgoinsville, Tenn.; several nieces and nephews. Bob Raines

Bob Gene Raines ABINGDON, Va. Dr. Bob Gene Raines professor emeritus of Emory & Henry College, passed Friday morning, Dec. 18, 2009, in Abingdon. Bob Raines was born in Dickenson County, Va., in 1935, and graduated from Clintwood High School in Clintwood, Va., in 1954. He earned a bachelor of arts in physics at Berea College in Berea, Ky., and later completed a master of arts in teaching in mathematics at University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., where he continued on to complete a doctor of education in curriculum and instruction with a specialty in mathematics education. His other graduate studies include physics at Washington University, and mathematics at George Peabody College and the University of Chicago. In 1959, Bob became a teacher of physics and mathematics at Abingdon High School, instructor of mathematics at Emory & Henry College, principal of John S. Battle High School in Bristol Virginia, associate professor of mathematics and director of admissions for Clinch Valley College in Wise, Va., and served the Washington County Virginia Public Schools first as assistant superintendent, deputy superintendent for instruction, then as superintendent of schools. From 1981 until his retirement in 2000, Dr. Raines served Emory & Henry College continuously as professor of mathematics and education, as director of the William N. Neff Center for teacher education, and in numerous other key roles. Beginning in 1988, Bob was a primary organizer and supporter of the Annual Education Forum. In 2006, at the 18th Annual Education Forum, the event was re-named "The B.G. Raines Education Forum" in his honor. After his retirement in 2000 with 20 years service, he continued to serve Emory & Henry part-time. For decades, Bob taught graduate classes and conducted workshops for teachers throughout Southwest Virginia and East Tennessee, was an active member and officer at the local, state, national, and international level in numerous professional organizations, including the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and served on the McGlothlin Foundation Committee to observe, interview, and select outstanding teachers in Southwest Virginia. Bob's numerous awards included the Emory & Henry College Excellence in Teaching Award, Phi Delta Kappa Southwest Virginia Teacher of The Year, Dr. John Davis Award for Distinguished Teaching and Service, received the Service Award from the Southwest Virginia Council of Mathematics, the Southwest Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics Distinguished Service Award, recipient of the Appalachian Center for Community Service Hope Award, recipient of The John Davis Distinguished Leadership Award in Virginia, and in 2005, Emory & Henry established a "Bob G. Raines Scholarship". Bob has been a faithful and proud Kawanian for 25 years of service. Bob was preceded by his father, Noah Raines; and mother, Blanche Raines of Clintwood; and his infant brother, Edward; and by his wife, Shirley Johnson Raines, formerly of Corbin, Ky., and of Abingdon. Bob's surviving family include his sister, Lynn Raines Carter and her husband Doug of Roanoke, Va,; his wife, Juanita Raines of Abingdon; and her son, David Lashlee, wife Amy and son, Jacob of Stafford, Va., Megan Lashlee of Phoenix, Ariz., Katie Breckenridge and husband Kurt of Las Vegas,Juanita's son, Greg Lashlee of Johnson City, Tenn., and by Bob's son, Neil Raines and wife Alison and daughter, Rachel of King George, Va., and Bob's son, Andy Raines, wife Amy and children, Olivia and Mark of Salem, Va. Buford E. COLLINGS Jr.

Buford's 28-year military career took off in a Stearman preparing to serve the Mighty Eighth Air Force, in the 487th Bomber Group, 836th Squadron, piloting his B-24, Old Repulsive, over occupied Europe. His career shifted towards MAC, as a pilot, in the Berlin Airlift followed by service in the Korean Conflict, the Vietnam War, and finally instructing for the Staff College before retiring in 1971, as a resident of Kingston, Virginia Beach. He lived his twilight relaxing in the home of his daughter, Sarita, on Dandy Loop, in Yorktown, Va., Buford was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Brugmann Collings., His children include Buford Edward III (Paul) and Rory Collings, Brian and Judy Collings, Gregory and Marjorie Collings, and Sarita C and Robert Howell. His grandchildren are Kyla Collings and Arlen Johnson, Darcy and Carl Wilde, Ben and Lucia Collings, Caitlin Collings and Joy Dominguez, Chris Woodfin, Jessica Collings, Corey Collings, Corinne Dame, and Lucas Dame. HOLLIS, C. Frank (Bronco) III, 65, passed away peacefully in his Varina home on December 19, 2009, surrounded by his family. He was preceded in death by his son, Cooper E. Hollis; his mother, Stella Hollis; his sister, Charlotte Deal Leake; and his father-in-law, Minor Martin. He is survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Ambra Martin Hollis; his children, Yvonne (Vonnie) H. Pridemore (Frank) and Major Sloan L. Hollis (Amber); his father, Charles F. Hollis Jr.; his sister, Betty H. Mills (Bobby); his 10 grandchildren, Ariel Regensburg, Trey Taylor, Adair Taylor, Jakob Pridemore, Madelyn Hollis-Burnett, Morgan Hollis-Burnett, Samantha Burnett, and their mother, Jenny Burnett (Chris), Grace Hollis, Emma Hollis, and Lane Hollis; and his two great-grandchildren, Sean and Sophia Regensburg. He is also survived by his beloved mother-in-law, Lena Martin; and his brothers-in-law, Ray, Bailey, and Barry Martin; numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. Frank was an active member of Fort Lee Baptist Church, Varina Masonic Lodge 272, Virginia Claremont Lodge 177, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. He was a retired member of the Carpenters Union Local 388 and the United Brotherhood of Carpenters. He rode the rodeo circuit in the United States and Canada for over 20 years winning 36 championships. He also entertained the crowd as a rodeo clown while bravely fighting bulls to protect other cowboys who may or may not have completed the eight second ride. With great enthusiasm he acted in 23 Varina Junior Women Club's annual dinner theatres. He was an avid hunter of deer, elk, and bear. He finished his lifelong dedication to the construction industry and the safety of its workers with Clancy & Theys Construction Company as the Virginia Division Safety Manager. He loved God, his family, life, friends, and telling jokes to all his friends, family, and the occasional stranger; although he never met a stranger. The family will receive friends from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 21, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave. Funeral services will be held at Fort Lee Baptist Church, 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, December 22 with burial immediatly following at Washington Memorial Park. Chapman, Joseph

Joseph S. Chapman ZUNI - Joseph Samuel "J.S." Chapman, 81, suddenly went home to be with the Lord Dec. 18, 2009. He was born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia on May 28, 1928 to the late Sam and Josephine J. Chapman. He was predeceased by sons, Lemuel B. Chapman and Pastor Joseph B. Chapman. J.S. was a retired farmer who began working the family land in the 1940s. A partnership developed between him and his predeceased brother, Leland, that lasted more than four decades. He was a member of Morning Star Baptist Church, Windsor, Va., where he served as a trustee and a member of the choir. He was a former member of the Tidewater Elks Lodge No. 262. He enjoyed fishing and deer hunting. He was also a sports enthusiast and loved playing and watching baseball. In later years, J.S. was an avid domino player with the senior citizens of the Zuni Center. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 59 years, Beatrice D. Chapman; a daughter, Cynthia C. Smith (Lorenzo); granddaughter, NaTasha N. Chapman; daughter-in-law, Marlene B. Chapman; goddaughter, Berlena M. Taylor (Aubrey); a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A celebration of his life will be held at noon Wednesday, Dec. 23, at Morning Star Baptist Church, 8445 W. Blackwater Road. The Rev. Leland R. Chapman will officiate and the Rev. J.J. Darley L. STOREY

NEWPORT NEWS - Darley L. Storey, longtime resident of Newport News, passed away Dec. 17, 2009, at York Convalescent Center after a brief battle with pneumonia, at the age of 84., Mrs. Storey was born in Claremont, Fla. She was educated at University of North Carolina, graduating with a B.A. in Journalism. She later married Walter E. Storey, who became managing editor at the Daily Press newspaper in Newport News, Va., Darley was an active grassroots supporter of Congressman Scott's political activities for many years. She served as the citywide precinct organizer for Rep. Scott and for other Democratic candidates. "When Darley called you to work on Election Day, not many were able to resist her request," said Margaret Keator, District Manager for Rep. Scott. She always served at the registration table for both Congressman Scott's annual Labor Day picnic and his birthday parties. She welcomed each guest with a "welcome to the party." She loved parties and talking social justice issues with elected officials and supporters. She was honored for her long-standing efforts in Democratic politics by all four of the local Democratic Parties on the Peninsula with the "Bobby Scott Grassroots Volunteer of the Year Award" in 2005., Mrs. Storey was a regular volunteer in her community and was especially involved in women's and children's issues and was a leader at Warwick United Methodist Church in Newport News, Va. Examples of her tireless community service efforts include: member of Newport News Mayor's Committee on disabilities; member of Voices for Virginia's Children; co-chair of the Public Policy Committee for the Newport News Unit of Church Women United; chair of Warwick United Methodist Church and Society Committee., Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Dec. 21, 2009, at the Warwick United Methodist Church in Newport News, Va. She graduated from Huntington High School, class of 1943, and Hampton Institute, now Hampton University, class of 1947. Upon graduation from Hampton Institute, she moved to New York City, where she met her late husband, Marion Phillips. From that union , they were blessed with three children., She taught at a private school in New York City before moving to the quiet suburbs of Long Island, where she taught pre-school, Kindergarten, First grade and special education classes. After a long and fulfilling career as an educator, Doris retired from the Amityville Public School System, where she served as a middle school guidance counselor. After retiring from teaching, her love for the theatre and performing often found her on stage as a member of the Gilbert and Sullivan Light Opera Company of Long Island. With her compassionate and giving spirit, Doris volunteered for over a decade in soup kitchens, working tirelessly to ensure that none of God's children would go hungry. As a member of Saint Mary's Church in Amityville, for nearly half a century, she taught Sunday school and stood as a ready and willing volunteer, where ever she was needed., Doris was a member of the Kiwanis Club of North Amityville and served as the club treasurer for 20 years. She was active in the recruitment of young people to bring their talents, time and energies to the Kiwanis Club., She is survived by her three children, Rita Francis of Saint Petersburg, Fla., William Phillips (Sonya) of Centreville, Va., and Michael Phillips (Lenora) of Huntington, N.Y.; sisters, Barbara Piggott of Newport News, Gwendolyn Ricks and Ann Knox, both of Hampton; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth Caudill MEADOWVIEW, Va. Elizabeth Caudill, 91, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009, at her home with her family. She was born March 31, 1918, in Washington County, Va., and was a daughter of the late John Andrew and Lothie Mae Hash. She loved flowers, cooking, gardening and, most of all, her Lord and Savior. She was a member of Harvest Fellowship. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Garfield; a daughter, Betty Lou Sanders; and son, Delmer Caudill. Survivors are one son, Gilmer Caudill; several grandsons and granddaughters; two special granddaughters, Dee Dee Taylor and Angie Caudill; several great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and special caregiver, Wanda Zill. The family would also like to extend a special thanks to the employees of Hometown Hospice for their exceptional care. FERNANDEZ, Elizabeth (Beth) Talley, became a heavenly angel on December 19, 2009. Preceded in death by her father, Charles E. Talley, she is survived by her mother, Jane R. Talley; her son, A.R. (Trey) Fernandez III; her daughter, Jane Elizabeth (Liz) Fernandez; and their father, A.R. Fernandez Jr. Other survivors include her sisters, Janet T. Stone, her husband, Kip, and daughter, Madelyn, of Roanoke; Charlotte T. Lawrence, her husband, Ned, and sons, Wels and Tanner, of Chesapeake; Lesley T. DuBois, her husband, Charlie, and daughter, Rosemary, of Portland, Ore.; and brothers, Charles E. Talley Jr., his wife, Cecilia, and son, Finn, of Santa Rosa, Cali.; and John S. (Chip) Talley. She is also survived by her longtime friends, Gail C. Matkins, Sigrid K. Harrison, and Donna A. Malone; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, a family of co-workers, and many other friends. Beth adored her children and devoted herself to them. She was employed by Monument Avenue Pediatrics for 32 years. Her beautiful smile, her wit, and her infectious laugh brought such joy and laughter to everyone around her. Beth, although you are no longer here, you will live forever in our hearts. Her remains rest at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. DAVIS, Elsie Walton, 80, of Tappahannock, died peacefully Saturday, December 19, 2009 at her daughter's home in Yorktown, with her daughter at her bedside. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Robert "Buster" Davis. She is survived by two children, Anita D. Smith and her husband, Greg, of Yorktown, and Donald "Peanut" Davis and his wife, Bonnie, of Dunnsville; five grandchildren, Ethan and Caleb Smith, Craig Davis, Wendy Chevalier, and Brian Davis; three great-grandchildren, Cameron and Chelsea Chevalier, Bryson Davis; one brother, Eugene Walton of St. Steven's Church; and three sisters, Ann Sweet of Midlothian, Frances Nuckles of Richmond, and Elizabeth Elliott of Tappahannock. She was born and raised in King and Queen County, and was a lifelong member of Smyrna Christian Church in Bruington. The family would like to thank the Surgical Radiation Oncology Office of Riverside Regional Hospital in Newport News for their kindness. HICKMAN, Eugene W. Sr., 82, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, November 22, 2009. He was the widower of Lois W. Hickman; and is survived by his daughters, Dorothy Bach, Frances Kibler, Sarah Burles and Margaret Hambro; sons, Eugene Wallace Hickman Jr. and Darryl Wayne Hickman; sister, Ruth Wright; sister-in-law, Barbara Hickman; and 13 grandchildren. Mr. Hickman was a U.S. Army WWII veteran and a former sales rep. with Eskimo Pie. His funeral service and interment will be private.

BARLOW, Eva Mobie Conner, stepped into the light of eternal love December 17, 2009. She joins her mother, Florence Smith Conner Mabry and father, Jackie Preston Conner; two brothers, Toy Melvin Conner and George Willie Conner Sr.; husband, Robert Earl Barlow; and one son-in-law, Tim Saunders. She is deeply mourned by the families of her sister, Jane Cole; and brother, Ray Mabry, of Pilot, Va. Also grieving is her loving companion, Ivan Owens and family. She is the beloved mother of Bonnie and son-in-law, Myron Kiltz, Penny Saunders, and Melissa and son-in-law, Richard Anderson. Additionally loved as daughters include, Gail Allen, Kimberly Quinn Barlow and families. She is the cherished grandmother of Jake Ryan and Kyle Saunders, Courtney, Erica, Mitchell Kiltz and Thomas Allen. She is also survived by many precious nieces, nephews and cousins. Eva (or Mobie) was a sweet loving soul who touched the lives of so many. She graduated as a Registered Nurse from Grace Hospital and spent many years nursing, mostly at Richmond Memorial Hospital. Evans, Beauford

as a first class petty officer. He was hired by Interior Systems in 1975 to run the paint department and left in 1986 as the president. He continued working eight more years as a site manager for the Breeden Company. Beauford loved freshwater fishing and when he wasn't fishing he enjoyed his trips to the casinos in Atlantic City, Indiana and Las Vegas. He was a member of the Ocean View Fleet Reserve. He was preceded in death by two sons, Tommy Evans and Robert Matthews, and his grandson, Andrew Pullin. Beauford was loved by everyone who knew him and will be deeply missed by his loving family and friends. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 35 years, Margaret Evans; daughter, Kim Eddings and her husband Greg; sons, Paul W. Matthews Jr. and Jeffery G. ESPOSITO, George A., 80, of Midlothian, passed away Saturday, December 18, 2009. He is survived by his wife, Delores Esposito; his children, Elisa Persinger and Dominick Esposito; grandchildren, Claire and Dominick Esposito, Wade, Carrington and George Persinger; and his brother, Dominick Esposito. Mr. Esposito grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. and owned a successful restaurant in Richmond for 20 years, "The Columns." He was a wonderful man that put his family above all else. HARTFIELD - Howell Lee Revere, 98, of Hartfield, a lifelong Middlesex County resident, passed away peacefully on Dec. 18, 2009 at home surrounded by his family., Mr. Revere founded Revere Gas from a small gasoline service station he built in Hartfield, in 1931. He grew the propane distribution business from one customer to a company serving many customers in 19 counties in eastern Virginia. He was a founding member of the Virginia Propane Gas Association., He worked with a group of dedicated volunteers going door-to-door to collect funds to establish the Hartfield Volunteer Fire Department in 1964. Mr. Revere developed many friendships, serving as a member of the Middlesex Lions club for 32 years. He was a faithful member of Lower United Methodist Church since the age of 12., He is survived by his devoted wife of 76 years and business partner, Elizabeth Carlton; one son and his wife, Charles and Sally Gayle; his grandsons and their wives, Craig and Tammy, Carlton and Darla. He was blessed with five great-grandchildren, Austin, Joshua, Trevor, Charlie and William., His lifelong hobby and love was farming "soldier" beans (soybeans). His comparison of yields with other farmers was always a great joy to him., Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home in Saluda, Va. Kenneth Lawrence Jantzen BRISTOL, Va. Kenneth Lawrence Jantzen, 79, died on Sunday, Dec. 20, 2009, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he was a son of the late William Nicholas and Gertrude Weber Jantzen. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, William Christopher Jantzen. Kenneth lived in northern Virginia for 30 years before moving to Bristol in 1995. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was a lifetime member of the Dale City, Virginia VFW. He loved his family, tending to his yard, and taking care of the birds and squirrels that visited there. Survivors include his loving wife of 54 years, Lorene Ratliff Jantzen; daughter, Lisa Jantzen; grandchildren, Corey Nicholas Ingram, Cheyenne Lorene Jantzen, and Joseph Dakota Dyke; and three nieces and nephews. GRIFFIN, Leo T. Sr., 87, of Richmond, died December 18, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine (Jeannie) Lacy Griffin. He is survived by his two sons, Leo T. Griffin Jr. and wife, Peggy, of Roswell, Ga., John Patrick Griffin and wife, Kathy, of Glen Allen, Va; two grandsons, Leo T. Griffin III of Marietta, Ga. and Patrick Sean Griffin of Glen Allen, Va.; granddaughter, Tiffany Nicole Griffin of Chattanooga, Tenn.; and great-granddaughter, Emma Grace Griffin of Marietta, Ga. Leo was a WWII Navy Veteran. After leaving the service, Leo was Vice President of Union Electric Co. in Richmond, Va. from 1946 to 1956. He helped form the Richmond Electricians Joint Apprenticeship Committee and served as the first Chairman. He taught National Electrical code and math in the apprenticeship school, and was an associate member in the International Association of Electrical Inspectors. Leo formed a consulting electrical engineering firm on February 1, 1956 and took part in the design of St. Mary's Hospital, the Blue Cross Building, Richmond City Hall and the State Monroe Building. In 1984, he transferred to the Nuclear Engineering Services Department and retired from Dominion Virginia Power on July 1, 2000. After he left active duty he began working at the Portsmouth Naval Base; he then transferred to the Newport News Shipyard. Muhsin later moved to New York in the early '70s. During this time he also became a devoted Muslim in the Nation of Islam. While in New York he married his first wife, Jamella Muwwakkil. He later married his second wife, Faheemah Muhammad-Muwwakkil., He is preceded in death by mother, Blanch L. Raines; and father, William H. Mildred Linton Privott NORFOLK - Mildred Linton Privott, 86, of the 1200 block of Colonial Ave., passed from her earthly life to her eternal home Dec. 18, 2009. A native of Virginia, she was the daughter of the late Nolan Jefferson and Viola K. Manning Jefferson Dula; the adopted daughter of the late Jerome Taylor Linton and Lena Norfleet Linton; and the wife of the late Walter Warren Privott Sr. She retired from the City of Chesapeake and was a member of Grace Baptist Temple. Surviving are her longtime companion, Arthur Doss of Virginia Beach; two sons, Walter Privott Jr. and his wife Kathy of Norfolk and Irvin Privott and his wife Victoria of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Besides her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Agnes Maruca, Nelma Linton and Nellie Leitch; and a brother, Eugene Linton. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel. A private interment will be held in Riverside Memorial Park. Mr. Custalow was a senior tribal Councilman and reservation treasurer and was also a senior deacon Sunday school teacher and treasurer of the Mattaponi Indian Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, Soloman Dewey and Pocahontas B. Custalow; and one brother, Ernest Cecil Sr. (Anna). He is survived by brothers, Calvin D. (Mildred), A. Marshall Jr. and wife, Ceci of Richmond, Va., and Joseph (Jay) Marshall of Norfolk and his wife, Dana of Norfolk; daughters, Diane Dangerfield and husband, Wally of Windermere, Fla., and Suzanne Marshall of Portsmouth; grandchildren, Tyler Marshall and Kendall Leigh-Collins Rice of Norfolk, Annie Hallock and husband, Jeremy of Richmond, Molly Marshall of Centerville, Va.; and one great-grandson, Justin Hallock of Richmond. Martin Co., in Baltimore, Md., through the spring of 1943, when he was inducted into the U.S. Army, fulfilling his wartime service in the "ACER" program at NACA, Langley until the end of WW II. He retired from NASA Langley in 1972., Mr. Sowers was a member of Zion United Methodist Church in Seaford, Va., where he sat on various committees, Methodist Men; and the Adult Bible Class. Air University; served as a Captain in the US Air Force and later employed by the U.S. Air Force as an Environmental Engineer at Lowry Air Force Base and Buckley Air Force Base, Colo., and was a member of Fort Hill United Methodist Church, Lynchburg. She is survived by her fiancE, Byron Keith Darcus; her daughters, Aminata Smiley and Natalia Bowman; her grandson, Pryce Barnes; and her loving parents, Ruth and Frank Price, all of Newport News; her grandfather, Mack Henry Banks of Williamsburg; her sisters, Irene Hopkins (Reginald), Ruth Barnes (Roderick), and Camala Price; her brother, Frank Price (Beverly); a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends., The viewing will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 22, 2009, at Whiting's Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at noon Dec. 23, 2009, in Little Zion Baptist Church, 8525 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, VA 23185, with the Rev. Linwood Gatling presiding. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. DUKE, William E. Jr., 70, of Henrico, Va., a loving husband, father and friend, passed away on December 17, 2009. He was predeceased by his parents, William E. Duke Sr. and Viola Eddleton Duke. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Hope Kelly Duke; three sons, Emory Duke III (Linda), Christopher Duke (Robin) and John Duke (Linda); one daughter, Adrienne Duke; nine grandchildren, Ashley Glasco, Kristin, Danielle and Elizabeth Duke, Olivia Duke and Brittany Zicafoose, Hylton, Porsha and Tylor Duke; two great-grandchildren, Kaleigh and Carter Glasco; one brother, David T. Duke; three sisters, Sadie Moon, Martha Ingersoll and Eugenia Lee Riddle; and six nieces and nephews. Mr. Duke was the president and co-founder of W.E. Duke and Sons, Inc., later known as Duke Contracting of Virginia. The family will receive friends Monday, December 21, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street. A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, December 22, at 2 p.m. at Glen Allen Baptist Church, 3028 Mountain Rd., Glen Allen.
