Jack Cloud

Jack Cloud ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Jack Cloud, 85, of Annapolis, Md., passed away June 19, 2010. He was born in Britton, Okla., in 1925 to the late Riley and Gertrude Cloud of Norfolk. Norfolk was his boyhood home and where he discovered his lifelong passion for football. A member of the College Football Hall of Fame and the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame, Jack was a star football player at Maury High School in his hometown of Norfolk. He entered the Army Air Force after graduation and served as a B-17 waist gunner flying 10 European missions. After his military service, he attended The College of William and Mary where he played Tribe football. While playing for William and Mary in the late 1940s, he was named an All-Southern Conference fullback three times. He set a school scoring record of 102 points in 1947 and scored five touchdowns in a single game. The New York Sun named him All- America in 1947 as did the Newspaper Enterprise Association in 1948. It was during Cloud's four years at William and Mary that the Tribe had some of its finest football teams. His 45 career touchdowns are still a conference record. After college, he pursued a professional football career with the Green Bay Packers as a fullback and the Washington Redskins as a linebacker. Two knee operations forced him into early retirement from the NFL. Jack returned to William and Mary as assistant football coach for one year and then returned to Norfolk to coach for the Navy from 1955-1958 as the athletic director and head coach at Norfolk Naval Station before joining the staff at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis. He served on the faculty as an associate professor of physical education and assistant to the Director of Athletics. During his career at the Naval Academy, he coached the light-weight and plebe football teams and assisted Wayne Hardin and George Welsh at the varsity level. He retired from the Naval Academy in 1990. Jack was not only a World War II veteran and star athlete, he was a well-respected friend and mentor to all who knew him. Jack is survived by his wife, Charlotte and their three children, Jack Cloud Jr. (Marty) of Severna Park, Md., Patricia Cloud Hasenei (Patty) of Annapolis, and Wendy Siedlecki of Chesapeake. He is also survived by his brother, Charles Cloud of Norfolk. He leaves many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who will miss him dearly. A memorial service and celebration of Jack's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at Mariners Church, 1592 Whitehall Road, Annapolis (Mariners Church is just off Route 50 in the Bay50 Shopping Center, www.marinerschurch.com). Margie Bunn

Margie Tyler Bunn CHESAPEAKE - Margie Tyler Bunn, 85, was called home to be with the Lord in the early hours of June 23, 2010 at the Oakwood Nursing Home. Born Aug. 27, 1924 in Mark Tree, Ark., she was the daughter of the late Herman and Lettie Tyler. Her early years were spent in rural Arkansas helping her farming family. After high school graduation, Margie headed east for Norfolk, finding a job at Western Union. Living across the street was William "Bill" Bunn, who would soon become her husband and partner for the next 64 years before passing in 2009. They moved to the Norview area of Norfolk, raised their family and stayed for 48 years before relocating to Chesapeake. Margie returned to work, this time with Sears Roebuck & Co., where she remained until her retirement. She successfully balanced her family, friends, home and career while still finding time to indulge in her two favorite pastimes traveling and women's college basketball. Whether camping or cruising, Bill and Margie were always ready to start on their next trip. Her love of basketball started while playing for her high school team and she was able to share this support and enthusiasm with her new team, the ODU Lady Monarchs. She was their faithful "cheerleader" for more than 25 years. Margie will forever be in the hearts of those she leaves behind. She is survived by her daughters, Pam Carey and husband Ron and Carol Cornett and husband Rob, all of Chesapeake; her grandchildren, Todd Radcliffe and wife Trish of California, Nicole Radcliffe and Zachary Cornett, both of Chesapeake; a great-granddaughter, "her baby" Leah Cornett of Chesapeake; her remaining brother, Hubert Tyler of Oregon; as well as many nieces, nephews and very special friends. Mom was the true Proverbs 31 woman. She worked hard, loved her family and was always ready to teach, help or share with anyone she met. A sweet and calm spirit was always evident in her life and "Her price is far above rubies." It is so hard to say goodbye but we know that her physical struggles are now over. We are so thankful to the Lord for sharing her with us and for the years of love that she gave and the memories that she helped to create in all of our lives. Robert Barker

Robert L. Barker EDENTON - Robert L. Barker, former state senator representing Wake, Harnett and Lee Counties, died Tuesday, June 22, 2010 in Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville. A real estate appraiser, Barker owned Bob Barker & Associates Inc. with offices in Edenton and Nags Head prior to retirement in 2006. The son of the late Millard R. Barker Sr. and Mabel Gray Barker, Bob was born in Harnett County and grew up in Raleigh, attending Millbrook High School and North Carolina State University. He and his wife, the former Kaye Hollowell, resided in Edenton. In the North Carolina General Assembly, Barker served as chair of the Senate Committee on Insurance and the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Human Resources. He chaired the North Carolina Dairy Industry Study Commission and co- chaired the Senate Joint Study on Governing Boards for Public Education. He is no doubt best remembered by colleagues as Senate co-chair of the House-Senate Joint Committee on Medical Malpractice during the malpractice issues of the 1970s. Senator Barker was appointed by Governor James B. Hunt to serve on the state's Capitol Building Authority that planned the state government complex in downtown Raleigh and also served on North Carolina's Bicentennial Commission and the Marine Fisheries Commission. Bob was always grateful for the role he was able to play in the effort to establish the ECU School of Medicine. Colleagues delight in stories about Senator Barker breaking ranks with Piedmont legislators to support the work of Dr. Leo Jenkins, U.S. Senator Robert Morgan and Lieutenant Governor Hunt to get the Medical School at ECU and the expansion of Pitt Memorial, that would follow, for all of eastern North Carolina. In statements issued this week, former U.S. Senator Robert Morgan and former Governor Jim Hunt called Barker "a great public servant." Of all his civic involvement in Raleigh over the years, none brought greater pleasure than his service on the Board of Directors of the Boys Club of Raleigh for many years. He was instrumental in organizing the Club in an abandoned church property and saw it grow to occupy a large facility with able staff to serve the unmet needs of young men. In addition to his wife of 32 years, Barker is survived by his sons, L. Ashley Barker and wife Christine of Greenville and Robert H. Barker of Nags Head, and daughters, Michelle B. Lewis and husband Terry and Melissa B. Hood and husband Jeff of Raleigh, and six grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Will Barker of Raleigh and sisters, Edith Watkins of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Carol Hannah of Pinehurst. In addition to his parents, Barker was predeceased by brothers, M. Ray Barker Jr. and William E. Barker and sisters, Marie B. Yow, Doris B. Southall and Judith B. Coley. Barker was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church where he formerly served on the vestry as Junior Warden. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 25, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Edenton at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at the residence at 103 West Church Street. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests consideration of memorial contributions to the N.C. State Engineering Foundation for Scholarships, P.O. Box 7901, NCSU, Raleigh, N.C. 27695, or to St. Paul's Church, 101 W. Gale St., Edenton, NC 27932. The family would like to express their appreciation for Dr. Chris Perry in Edenton, and for Dr. Heather White and the oncology staff at Pitt Memorial Hospital.
