David Scott

David Evans Scott VIRGINIA BEACH - David Evans Scott passed away on July 5, 2010 at his home in Virginia Beach. He was born June 27, 1938 in Los Angeles to Allan and Laura Scott. Allan was a screenplay writer in Hollywood in the 30s, 40s and 50s, and Laura was a stage actress prior to their marriage. David was an exceptional man who led a very exciting life in academia and in the fields of music and sports. He also loved fishing in the waters of Scotland, Chile, Alaska and British Columbia, as well as hunting in the Adirondacks, Alaska and British Columbia. That was his idea of heaven. He enjoyed skiing, salvage diving, surfing and riding horses on the beach in Malibu. Even though David grew up in Hollywood in the company of movie legends, he chose not to be an actor, but in every aspect of his life, he was "on the stage." At Beverly Hills High School and Williamette University in Salem, Ore., David excelled in football, track and field, boxing and theater. Between college and graduate school at University of Southern California, David and three friends formed a folk group called The Wayfarers. They played the same venues as Peter, Paul and Mary and the Kingston Trio. There was a time when the group considered making singing their career, but they eventually went their separate ways to excel in their chosen fields. David's career as a Ph.D. in anatomy took him from California to Rochester, N.Y., where he served as chairman of Anatomy, to Columbia, Mo., and then to EVMS in Norfolk, where again he served as chairman of Anatomy. During those years, David also served for 29 years in the Army Reserve Medical Corps, retiring as a colonel. David's number one love was teaching the medical students, physician's assistants and medical masters students in nonconventional ways such as using humor and music composed for various anatomy classes, and his famous "Triple Toot" as a reminder of very important information. In January 2010, David was diagnosed with esophageal cancer and spent time as a patient at Sentara Leigh Hospital. During those times, he was in the care of the physicians and PA's whom he taught. They loved him for encouraging them in their chosen fields and flocked to his room when they found out he'd been admitted. David is survived by his wife and caregiver, Gretchen; sister, Pippa Scott and her husband Lee Rich of Beverly Hills; son, Phillip Scott of Marin County, California; son, Charles Scott and his wife Chika and their son Lucas of Wynnewood, Pa.; and his stepdaughter, Justine Homer of Virginia Beach. The family would like to thank all of David's doctors and nurses and his Sentara Home Healthcare nurses, caregivers and volunteers for their loving care. David always said he'd done everything he'd ever wanted in life. He traveled the world for business and pleasure, spoke five languages and was a Master Guide in Alaska and British Columbia, but most of all, David wanted to be remembered as a teacher. A memorial celebration of David's life will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, July 10, at Rosewood Kellum Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or Davis Corner Rescue Squad. You may offer condolences to the family at www.kellumfuneralhome.com.

Nancy Hirstein

Nancy Stafford Hirstein NORFOLK - After a 12-year battle with Alzheimer's disease, Nancy Stafford Hirstein died July 5, 2010, at her home in Norfolk with her family at her side. She was born in High Point, N.C., Oct. 5, 1928. Her parents and younger sister preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Robert; sons, James of Ribeauvillé, France and William of Elmhurst, Ill.; and daughter, Ann Maydosz of Norfolk. Six grandchildren complete the family. Ms. Hirstein was a quintessential Navy wife and mother. If asked, she would say that the family's move to Japan in the 1960s was the highlight of her life. She became greatly immersed in Japanese language and culture. She chose and inspired the family to choose to embrace Japanese culture and customs rather than confining themselves to the American culture of the Navy base. Mr. Hirstein taught English at a Japanese school, learned Japanese and collected many unique artifacts from Japan. She was active with the Japanese Naval Officers Wives group, making friends, some of whom she corresponded with for many years. Mr. Hirstein earned her undergraduate degree at Old Dominion University in 1970. Her return to college heralded another infusion of culture for the family. As Ms. Hirstein took the required courses for her degree in library science, she brought home the scientific, historical and theoretical information from her classes to enrich her family's understanding of the world. She was employed by Norfolk Public Schools as a school librarian for 13 years following her graduation, and had many fond memories of the children and colleagues she served. She entered the Norfolk Public Schools during a period of integration and communicated her attitude of acceptance to her colleagues, students and children. When she retired, she immersed herself in the lives of her family. Before her disease progressed, she exercised, read voraciously and spent unlimited time with all members of her family. Her passions were language and semantics and she worked tirelessly to urge her family to speak and write correctly. Her family knew that whatever was happening in their lives, it was always certain that there would be at least one person who supported them no matter what. At her request, no services will be held. Cremation Society of Virginia is assisting the family. Online condolences may be made at www.cremate.org.
