AlBurnice "A.B." Call Evans MARION, Va. AlBurnice "A.B." Call Evans, age 86, passed away on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, at her son's home surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born in Rich Valley, Va., to the late John and Jennie Call. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Marvin "Cart" Evans; infant child, Danny Darrell Evans; and a granddaughter, Lisa Evans. She had retired from Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute after many years of service as a nurse's aide. Survivors include her children, Ruth Tilley, Mountain City, Tenn., Carson and Freda Evans, Tazewell, Va., Harold Evans, Maryland, Wayne and Vanessa Evans, Marion, Dartty and Kathy Evans, Marion, Dallas and Rachel Evans, Marion, Janie and Dale Goble, Marion, Richard and Roxane Evans, Marion, Helen and Don Taylor, Chilhowie, Va., and David Evans, Marion; 27 grandchildren, to include a special granddaughter, Sheri Shelton; numerous great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren. The family would like to express a special thanks to her daughter-in-law, Roxane Evans, and Hospice of Southwest Virginia for the care given to Mrs. Evans. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011 from the Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in the Walker's Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Alonzo Etheridge Jr. NORFOLK - Alonzo Etheridge Jr., 79, of the 700 block of Forbes St., passed away Jan. 5, 2011. He was born to the late Alonzo Sr. and Etheil. He is survived by two sons, Michael (Darlene) of Virginia Beach, Marvin (Sandra) of Portsmouth; one daughter, Clover Jackson (Thomas) of Philadelphia; five grandchildren; three great-grandsons; two brothers, William and Icellia Etheridge of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Golethia Woodhouse, Inez (Charles) Moody and Elizabeth (Robert) Ziegler, all of Virginia Beach; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 10, at New Hope Baptist Church, 395 Old Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach, with burial in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Anna Belle Mahaffey Anna Belle Mahaffey, age 91, passed away Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at Johnson City Medical Center after a brief illness. She was born May 7, 1919 to the late John Edward Hinkle and Vesta Mae Rice Hinkle. She was retired from Imperial Reading and a lifelong member of Cold Springs Presbyterian Church in Bristol Tennessee. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, James E. Mahaffey, in April of 2005; by three sisters, Kate Hayes, Carmen Christian, and Alice Carrier; and by two brothers, Jessie Hinkle and George Hinkle. Left to cherish her memory are her children, sons, David L. Mahaffey and wife, Linda, James E. Mahaffey Jr. and wife, Joan; daughters, Lois Voyles, Earlene Lowe and husband, Jack, and Linda Kinkead and husband, Allen; brothers, Jerry Hinkle and wife, Arlene, and Edward Hinkle Jr. and wife, Bobbi; sister, Mary Lynn Leonard; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and special friend, Junior Barr. Annabelle Emmett Chandler Annabelle Emmett Chandler, 74, of Appomattox, died at Lynchburg General Hospital, Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011. She was the wife of the late James Harrison Chandler. Born in Greeneville, Tenn., Jan. 23, 1936, she was a daughter of the late Essie Malone and John Emmett. She was a member of the Appomattox P.H. Church, and a retired employee of Courtland Manufacturing Co. She is survived by a son, James Emmett Chandler and his wife Kathleen, of Denton Tex.; one daughter Diane Lucero, of Appomattox; three brothers, John Emmett, of Lynchburg, Billy D. Emmett, of Appomattox, and Maynard Emmett, of Greeneville, Tenn.; one sister, Rose Lee Bailey, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; four grandchildren, Michael Lucero, Misty Partello, Jonathan Chandler, and Jessica Chandler; five great-grand-children, Brandon Lucero, Collin Partello, Chandler Partello, Isabella, Aiden Rhodes. Anne Hume Risher

Anne Hume Nash Risher, 89, died Thursday, January 6, 2011, at her residence., She was born February 8, 1921, in Norfolk., She moved to Charlottesville at an early age and considered Charlottesville her home until moving to Lynchburg in 1950., Anne attended local and private schools in Charlottesville and graduated from Saint Margaret's School in Tappahannock. During World War II, she was active in the Red Cross. She also worked in a munitions plant in Radford., After World War II, Anne became President of the University League, now the Junior League of Charlottesville. While President, she founded "The Opportunity Shop". It was a success from the start. The shop receives donated clothes and sells them to the public, with proceeds going to deserving charities., On April 10, 1948, she married John Calhoun Risher; they moved to Lynchburg in 1950. Soon after coming to Lynchburg, Anne was made chairman of the Cot Committee, an organization that helped low income patients obtain hospital admission. She was a member of the Florence Crittendon Board for many years. When the Lynchburg General Hospital moved to its present location, she and a group of ladies founded the Lynchburg General Hospital Womens' Auxilliary. She was a member of Saint John's Episcopal Church., She is survived by her husband, John Risher; her daughter, Alice Risher Painter and son-in-law James W. Painter, of Los Alamos, New Mexico., Anne also had three granddaughters, Lauren Painter, Amy Albright and her husband, Ian, and Anne Corbin and her husband, Aaron; and five great-grandchildren, Eliana, Teana, and Lacy Albright, and Daniel and Jonas Corbin., A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, January 10, 2011. at Saint John's Episcopal Church, 200 Boston Avenue, Lynchburg, Virginia., In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.


 


 

Annie White

Annie Ruth Hale White VIRGINIA BEACH - Annie Ruth White passed away Jan. 5, 2011 in Virginia Beach at the age of 96. At the time of death, Annie was a resident of Atlantic Shores Retirement Community on Dam Neck Road. Annie Ruth White, born Dec. 27, 1914, was the eldest child of Ernest Buel Hale and Cora Parker Hale of Connaritsa, N.C. She was the widow of Willard A. White (1914 - 1989). Annie Ruth was preceded in death by her daughter, Marolyn Lou Huneycutt (1941 - 1991) of Jackson, Tenn. Left to cherish and celebrate her memory are her daughter, Kay White Paluch of Chesterton, Mo.; and her son, Dr. Willard E. White of Oak Park, Ill. She is also survived by three brothers, James Hale, E. B. Hale and Dana Hale; four grandchildren, Leah Kathryn Maeding, Roger A. Huneycutt, Matthew Paluch and William Paluch; and one great-grandson, Tyler Jae Huneycutt. Annie Ruth married Willard White in 1938 and began a long phase of life as part of the Hampton Roads community, first as residents of Norfolk County and then in 1946 to their farm on Indian River Road in Princess Anne County. The place that many remember as the center of family life was later developed as Indian River Farms. Annie Ruth and Willard served the community primarily through Salem Methodist Church where she gave generously of her time and talents as a volunteer, especially through the Methodist Women. Other activities included garden clubs and the historical society. At age 50, Annie Ruth became a floral designer at Edith Hugo Florist in Norfolk until she retired at age 70. She will be remembered by all who knew her for her unfailing sense of style, her devotion to friends and family, and especially her gifts as a cook and popular hostess. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 9, at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, 4889 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach. A funeral is scheduled at the funeral home Monday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. Following the service, all attendees are invited to a reception at the Atlantic Shores Clubhouse, 1200 Atlantic Shores Drive, Virginia Beach. Charlie R. Darden WINDSOR - Mr. Charlie Roy Darden of Courthouse Highway, passed Jan. 4, 2011. The Southampton County native was born May 16, 1916 to the late Willie Everett and Annie Williams. He served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in 1945. In 1974, Mr. Darden retired from the Virginia Department of Transportation. He is survived by his devoted wife, Maxine C. Darden and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. A celebration of life will be held at noon Tuesday, Jan. 11, at Bright Lilly Disciples Church of Christ, 27167 Bishop Poquoson Road, Newsoms, Va., with pastor, Elder Mary Stephens delivering the eulogy. Claude H. "Bud" McCloud

Claude H. "Bud" McCloud BRISTOL, Va. Claude H. "Bud" McCloud, age 87, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at Franklin Woods Medical Center in Johnson City, Tenn. He was born in Lebanon, Va., the son of George M. and Sylvia Puckett McCloud. After graduating from Lebanon High School, Bud enlisted in the, Air Corps and was stationed in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon returning home to Virginia, he was employed by the Virginia Department of Highways, where he worked for 45 years. During the later part of his career, he was the resident engineer at the Abingdon Residence office. He was a charter member of Midway Baptist Church, and helped to build the current church. He served as a deacon for over 40 years and was active at the Brumley Cove RA Baptist Camp. He had a special place in his heart for children and was affectionately know as "the candy man" by the children who attended Midway Baptist Church. Bud's sense of humor was well known and he never passed up an opportunity to tell a joke or tease someone. He participated on the Lebanon baseball team and was well respected for his ability to play second base and his aggressive playing style. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, George M. McCloud Jr. and Cecil McCloud; and four sisters, Ruth Orr, Wilma Bostic, Elizabeth Lambert, and Virginia Roark. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Freeda Bartley McCloud; four sons, Michael and wife, Linda, James and wife, Brenda, Danny (Butch) and wife, Barbara, and Jeff and wife, Shannon; three daughters, Susan Griffith and husband, Billy, Liesa Estep and husband, Dan, and Christa Shannon and husband, Casey; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Jim McCloud and wife, Betty; and two sisters, Peggy Page and Betty Jo Coley and husband, David. He is also survived by special friends and neighbors Ron and Joan Harrington, Roger and Peggy Duff and the Midway Baptist church family. Dorothy Breeden Mench Dorothy Breeden Mench, 87, of Amherst, passed away peacefully Friday, December 24, 2010, at the home of her daughter, Melinda Harlow., She was the wife of the late James F. Mench, who preceded her in death., Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, September 3, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Olmer and Helen Breeden., After the war, she married a fellow World War II veteran, Navy pilot Lt. James F. Mench. In the following years, she had two daughters, Melinda, Joan and a son, James Jr. The family was stationed on numerous military installations, including an overseas stint in Morocco. That posting allowed her to pursue her love of history and travel extensively in Europe and the Mediterranean area. Her husband eventually retired from the Navy and they moved to Orange County., While living in Orange, she was active in the Garden Club, President of the Women's Club, and for a time, was a county reporter for the Charlottesville Daily Progress. She also loved to play bridge and read., She is survived by two daughters, Melinda and her husband, Morgan Harlow, of Amherst, and Joan and her husband, David Clark, of Unionville; a son, James F. Frank R. Ward VIRGINIA BEACH - "Behold I show you a mystery; we shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed in a moment, in a twinkling of an eye." Frank heard the call and returned to God, Jan. 1, 2011 at Westport Rehabilitation Center in Richmond, Va. We start the new year on a note of renewal, just as Dad would have it. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., April 16, 1917 to the late Willard and Mae Ward, he grew up in New York and Miami Beach, Fla. Frank was an Eagle Scout and was acknowledged by President Woodrow Wilson. He graduated from the University of Florida with a B.S. and Columbia University, with a M.S. in chemical engineering. He went on to work on the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and the discovery of nylon at Dupont. In 1956, Frank left the Atomic Energy Commission in Washington, D.C., and moved his family to Lynchburg, Va., where he worked for Babcock and Wilcox and then retired with Kavanaugh Industries in Virginia Beach. His many interests included golf, horse racing and baseball with the Baltimore Orioles being his favorite team. He was a member of the Norfolk and Virginia Beach Sports Club and the Day Lily Society. He loved his flowers. Frank is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan Ward of Virginia Beach; his son and wife Chris and Laurie Ward of Richmond and daughter and husband, Debbie and Rob Roberson of Virginia Beach. Surviving grandchildren are, Megan, Colin, Sean Roberson and wife Kay, Amy Culicerto, Jennie Ward of Virginia Beach, Evan Berry of Richmond and Tara Fudge of Atlanta and his great-grandchildren, Camille, Seamus and Charlotte Roberson, and June Culicerto. He was predeceased by his daughter, Sandy Ward in 2006. A memorial service will be held today, Jan. 8, at the Eastern Shore Chapel in Virginia Beach at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the Macular Degeneration Foundation, Box 531313 Henderson, NV 89053. James A. Nottingham VIRGINIA BEACH - James A. Nottingham, 74, departed this life Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011. He was the only child born to the late Agnes Nottingham in Northampton County, Virginia. He was predeceased by his wife, Shirley A. Nottingham and grandson, Derrick A. Nottingham Jr. He is survived by two daughters, Denita Jackson (Carlton) and Tawana Nottingham Alston (Timothy); two sons, Dr. Derrick A. Nottingham (Robin) and Steve A. Nottingham (Andrea); a devoted special friend, Aulandrea Harris; and a host of other relatives and friends. Janice Goodwin Shaffer Janice Goodwin Shaffer, age 69, went to be with her personal Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at UT Medical Center after a six-year battle with Alzheimer's disease. Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Mildred Penley Goodwin; grandparents, George and Pearl Goodwin and Lee and Lottie Penley; and husband, Marvin L. Shaffer. Janice lived most of her life in the Bristol area. She was a manager at the L.M. Berry and Company and later with Sprint for 39 years. Janice was a longtime member of Fellowship Chapel in Bristol Virginia. She loved to serve her family and friends by cooking wonderful meals. She served her church by caring for the young children. She also was an avid supporter of missions. Survivors include son, Jeff S. Ward and wife, Amber, of Knoxville, Tenn.; step-sons, Marty Shaffer and wife, Karen, of Bristol Virginia, and Greg Shaffer and wife, Carol Ann, of Bristol Virginia; grandchildren, Kerrigan and Morgan Ward and Tyler and Jessee Shaffer; stepmother, Frances Goodwin; brothers, Ronald Goodwin and wife, Cindy , Terry Goodwin and wife, Cindy, the Rev. Don Hawkins and wife, Kathy, and Dennis Goodwin and wife, Sheri; sisters, Edna Atler and husband, Jerry, Ann Saddler and husband, Delmer, Barbara Jones and husband, Ralph, Connie Stout, Sandra Baun and husband, Glen, Robin Feathers and husband, Jeff; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. CASTANON, Jersey Airah Rain, age three months, lost her courageous battle with heart disease on Tuesday, January 4, 2011. She had endured the first of three surgeries at just 10 days old. Lewis Glover Harvey Lewis Glover Harvey, 78, of Redfields Rd., Appomattox, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at his residence. He was the husband of the late Shirley Austin Harvey. Born in Evergreen, on June 6, 1932, he was a son of the late Edward Larkin and Manie Clark Harvey. Lewis was a member of Liberty Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and sang in the choir. He was a US Navy veteran, a retired pattern maker and estimator for the Lynchburg Foundry and a retired AFLAC agent. Lewis sang with the Singing Christians Quartet, the Liberty Strings, was a fiddler for the Falling River Band, and the owner and manager for Harvey's Red Barn Opry. He is survived by four daughters; Linda H. Kidd, Sue Francis and her former husband Steve Francis, Anita H. Hubbard and her husband Robert, of Appomattox, Charlene Mitchell and her husband David, of Red House; one brother, Henry Harvey, of Richmond; four sisters, Nettie Deadman, of Petersburg, Mary Phelps and husband Twyman, Martha Conner and Roberta Mitchell all of Appomattox; six grandchildren, Darin and Cheryl Kidd, Brad and Crystal Kidd, Brandon and Destiny Kidd, Gina Robertson, Robbie and Ashleigh Hubbard; thirteen great-grandchildren, Taylor, Tyler, Wyatt, Riley, Kinley, Bradley, Dylan, Hayley, Cayden, Chloe and Lindsey Kidd, Tye and Jaden Robertson; numerous nieces and nephews, his devoted caregiver Daisy Green, former son-in-law Steve Tanner, and his faithful Chihuahua "Little Bit." Larry O. Ehrenberg of Crozet, Virginia, passed away at home surrounded by his loved ones on Thursday, January 6, 2011, from cancer. He was 64 years old., Larry was born to Paul H. and Dorothy M. Ehrenberg on July 12, 1946, in Baltimore, Maryland, where he grew up and attended school graduating from Edmondson High School in 1965. He joined the Air Force in 1966 and was honorably discharged in 1969., He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Peggy Selvage Ehrenberg; daughter, Erika Ehrenberg Pugh; son-in-law, David Pugh; granddaughters, Kayleah and Lacey Pugh, all of Crozet. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Kenn E. Sweeney and Gregory J. Sweeney of Madison, Wisconsin., Larry was man of simple needs who worked as a carpenter most of his adult life. He loved growing hot peppers, working outdoors, and was quite the artist working in wood as well as pen and ink drawings. Born in New York City in 1918, she lived in Brooklyn and on Long Island until 1968 when, with her husband and children, she moved to Virginia. She lived in both Fairfax and Prince William Counties. Margaret "Peggy" McKenna Margaret "Peggy" Elizabeth Mattox McKenna, 87, of Huddleston and formerly of Lynchburg died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at Bedford Memorial Hospital surrounded by her family. Born, Feb. 2, 1923, in Huddleston, she was the daughter of the late Nathan Davis Mattox and Margaret Black Balfour Mattox. She was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Floyd Knight McKenna. Following graduation from Classical High School in Providence, R.I., she received an academic scholarship to Madison College. She left Madison College during WWII when she was called to serve with the Chemical Warfare Service as the Executive Assistant to Colonel Herd, Director of U. S. Army Chemical Warfare Systems. Following the war she and her husband returned to Lexington where he completed his BS at Washington & Lee University. After graduation they moved to Lynchburg where Peggy maintained an active life. As well as being a devoted wife and mother, she took great pride in her seamstress skills benefiting her family and community. Peggy believed the secret to staying young was an active life. She taught swimming and tennis; she also volunteered as a choir mother for 24 years for the children's choir at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Blanks was a founding member and first president of the Staunton River Garden Club, president of the Blanks Memorial Foundation, which was instrumental in the restoration of Historic Halifax Church. She was a devoted member and past deacon and elder of Providence Presbyterian Church, where she served as the church historian for over 25 years. Pansy Leona Steele BANDY, Va. Mrs. Pansy Leona Steele, age 94, passed away Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, in a Richlands, Va., hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born Aug. 23, 1916, in Canebrake, W.Va., and was the daughter of the late George Vince and Hattie Christian Bandy. Pansy was a lifelong Christian, devoted mother, wife, and grandmother. She was a member of the Bandy Chapel Church, where she served faithfully for 62 years as the church pianist. She was recognized as the church "Mother." Her first love was her love for her God. She was a member of the Red Hat Club and was as avid gardener and had a gift with flowers. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William Steele; two sons, Vinson Steele and William Steele Jr.; seven siblings, Kathleen Beavers, George Vince Bandy Jr., Bobby Bandy, Janice Reid, Medarae Barnett, Herman Bandy, and Delbert Bandy; and one grandchild, Mark Steele. Phyllis S. Shook VIRGINIA BEACH - Phyllis S. "Shu" Shook passed away peacefully on Jan. 5, 2011. The daughter of Charles and Alice Struse, Shu was born April 23, 1925 and grew up outside Philadelphia in Roxborough, Pa. She graduated from Roxborough High School in 1943 and went on to attend The College of William and Mary where she met her future husband of 56 years, the late Henry Aden Shook. Shu graduated in 1948. Shu was active over the years in many volunteer organizations and was a generous supporter of the arts. She was a member of the Princess Anne Country Club and the First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach. Shu loved music and singing and was an avid tennis player. She also had a great love of travel which took her and Henry to many parts of the world. Together they also enjoyed many winters at Johns' Island in Vero Beach, Fla. Shu is survived by her daughter, Amy Shook-Perez and son-in-law Simon Perez; a son, Marc Shook and daughter-in-law Cynthia; and two grandchildren, Lindsay C. Shook and M. Aden Shook Jr. The family would like to express its deepest appreciation to their mother's caregivers and the entire staff of the The Memory Center for their compassionate support and quality of life provided to Shu. Regina Mary Clifford NORFOLK - Regina Mary Clifford, the former Regina Gaddis, died at 4:05 p.m. Jan. 6, 2011. She was 84 years old. A native of New York, Mrs. Clifford attended schools in Eastchester, N.Y., and Charleston, S.C. She graduated from the Barbizon School of Modeling in New York City in 1947. Mrs. Clifford married U.S. Navy Ensign William Clifford in 1948 in Charlotte, N.C., and spent the next 30 years as a Navy wife making many moves and making their home in Hawaii, Italy, France, as well as many ports on both coasts of the United States. Rear Adm. Clifford retired in 1978, and the Cliffords lived in Clearwater and Sun City Center, Fla., for the last 30 years where Mrs. Clifford was an avid golfer. She relocated to Virginia Beach in 2010. She is survived by her two daughters, Deborah Regina Paul of Northport, N.Y., and Susan Elizabeth Collins of Norfolk, as well as two grandchildren, Kristin Harmon and John Rathjen of Virginia Beach. Jan 7, 2011 EDEN, N.C. — Ruby Crouch Talbert, 92, of Eden, died Thursday, Jan. 6, 2011, at Palliative Care and Hospice of Catawba Valley in Newton. She was born in Rockingham County on April 11, 1918, to Robert Giles Crouch and Mary Alice Davis Crouch. In addtion to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Laskey Pue Talbert. She was a member of Sandy Ridge Christian Church. Surviving are six children, Carolyn Thornton of Eden, Linda Woody of Claremont, Iris Dixon of Eden, Oneda Mason of Ferrum, Va., Larry Talbert of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Britt Talbert of Martinsville, Va.; 19 grandchildren; and a number of great and great-great-grandchildren. Shirley Ann K. Sloan STATESVILLE - Shirley Ann Kennedy Sloan, 73, of the 100 block of Brookmeade Drive, passed away unexpectedly Jan. 5, 2011 at Davis Regional Medical Center in Statesville. Mrs. Sloan was born July 22, 1937 in Iredell County to the late Archie Marion and Ann Jones Kennedy. Shirley was married to Robert William Sloan at the First Baptist Church of Waukegan, Ill., July 2, 1956. Shirley grew up in Statesville, N.C., graduated from Statesville Senior High School, and attended Boulevard Methodist Church. After marrying in 1956, Shirley, as a Marine Corps wife, lived with her husband Bob and their five children at numerous Marine Corps bases including Camp Lejeune, N.C., Marine Corps Base, Quantico, Va., Marine Corps Auxiliary Air Station, Mojave, Calif., Marine Corps Air Station, New River, N.C., Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego, Naval Air Station, Washington, D.C., the Great Lakes Navy Base, North Chicago, Ill., and the U.S. Navy Base, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After retiring from the U.S. Marine Corps in 1980, Bob and Shirley resided in Virginia Beach for 18 years before moving back to Statesville in 1995. For 26 years, she and her husband co-owned and operated the Bit of England Dart and Game Shoppe in Virginia Beach. Mrs. Sloan enjoyed flower gardening, lake fishing, cross-stitching and playing darts (team captain for four years). She loved her family dearly. She treasured her traveling adventures with her beloved husband and visiting her children and grandchildren. She was at the bedside for the birth of every grandchild. She was the best wife, mother, and grandmother anyone could ever have. Mrs. Sloan was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Harvey Ray Kennedy; and two granddaughters, Sarah Lynne Sizemore and Melissa Ann Sloan. In addition to her husband, Shirley is survived by one son, Randy M. Sloan (Ethel) and four daughters, Patricia Ann Kovacs (Michael), Denise Lynn Sizemore (George), Robin Marie Sloan Gutkin and Donna Kaye Vegoe (Mark). Also surviving are 14 grandchildren, Jessica Ann Philips (Matthew B.), Theresa Michelle Sloan, Erica Jean Sloan, Kennedy Ann Sloan, Christopher George Sizemore, Emily Marie Sizemore, Sloan Alexandra Gutkin, Claire Elisabeth Gutkin, Shelby Ann Vegoe, Kyle McKinley Vegoe, Zachary Daniel Vegoe, Jesse Reece Vegoe, Danielle Rose Kovacs and Eric Michael Kovacs Sr. (Amy); and five great-grandchildren, Hayden Christopher Sizemore, Carter Ted Phillips, Marissa Jane Kovacs, Brionna Nicole Kovacs and Eric Michael Kovacs Jr. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, Jan. 8, at Fairview Baptist Church with Pastor Scott Eanes officiating. Thomas C. Baker DAMASCUS, Va. Thomas C. Baker, age 68, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at his residence. He was born in Hamilton, Ohio and had lived in Cincinnati for 27 years prior to moving to Damascus in 1991. He was a veteran of the U.S., during the Vietnam era and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 135 in Damascus. He was a retired electrician from, in Fairfield, Ohio. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Baker; one son, Thomas Todd Baker of Damascus; one sister, Dolly Winkler of Hamilton; one brother, Charles Baker of Fairfield; and several nieces and nephews. Virgil Rives

Virgil Arthur Rives WINDSOR - Virgil Arthur Rives, 90, died December 29, 2010. Mr. Rives was born in Dinwiddie County Dec. 8, 1920, the son of Sarah Ferguson and Aubrey Tucker Rives, and the stepson of William F. Jordan. He was predeceased by his brothers, Aubrey Tucker Rives Jr. and James Talmadge Rives. He was a lifelong Christian and attended the Methodist church. In 1943, Mr. Rives joined the U.S. Navy. After basic training, he departed from Norfolk on the Destroyer Escort USS Lough. He spent most of his navy time fighting the war in the Pacific. He saw action in the Battle for Leyte Gulf and could tell harrowing tales of Kamikaze attacks. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He returned to Norfolk where he met the "Sunshine of his Life," Ruth Hard. They traveled to her home in Massachusetts to marry Oct. 11, 1947. Afterwards, they lived in Norfolk until he retired from his career at Moon Engineering Co. in 1982. After retirement, Ruth and Virgil lived in Surry County before moving to Windsor. He never forgot the pleasures of his childhood and spent many of his happiest hours hunting in the fields, fishing the local waters, and growing vegetables and flowers to give to his many friends. He was a member of the Jamestown Society and the Union Hunt Club. His memory will live on forever in the hearts of his family and friends. He is survived by his wife, Ruth; his daughters, Susan Rives McRee, Charlotte Rives Carr and Nancy Rives Lents and their husbands, Griffith, Bill and Mark, respectively; and his grandchildren, Martin Carr, Lindsey Carr, Blair McRee and T.J. Lents. The family wishes to thank the caregivers and friends at Consulate Health Care of Windsor. A funeral will be conducted today, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m. in St. Luke's Church, Smithfield, with internment in the old cemetery immediately after. R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Murray served with the Henrico Division of Police for 27 years, achieving the rank of Assistant Chief of Police. Also, preceding him in death was his brother, Mason Washington of Richmond; and sister, Martha "Betty" Washington Jackson of Charlottesville., He is survived by his sister, Margaret W. Porter of Atco, New Jersey. He was educated in the Albemarle County School system and graduated from Albemarle Training School., October 1, 1953, Walter married his "Angel", Anita Delores Wrice, of Yancey Mills. Their 57 year union is blessed with five children, Ceadric L. Washington (Gail Kuehn), of Watonga, Oklahoma, Trustee Ronald D. Washington (Jacqueline M. Washington) of Yancey Mills, Virginia, Zelita R. Washington (Jesse Johnson) of Richmond, Virginia, Deacon Randolph F.W. Washington of Columbia, South Carolina, and Gwynda D. Williams (Dr. Amos C. Williams Jr.) of San Antonio, Texas. A loving son/nephew, James A. Jackson, cherishes his memory. Walter and Anita have 11 grandchildren, Franklin Washington of Charlottesville, Virginia, Clifton Walker of Whiteman AFB, Missouri, Marvin Washington of Arlington, Virginia, Ronald "Lee" Washington of Yancey Mills, Virginia, Christopher O. Williams and John A. G. Williams, both of San Antonio, Texas, and Maximus J. Washington of Watonga, Oklahoma. They have four great-grandchildren, Tianna Washington of Charlottesville, Virginia, Diamon S., Dejah I. and Adara M. Walker, all of Atlanta, Georgia., Walter also leaves to mourn his loss, sisters-in- law, Ruby Stradford Boston of Yancey Mills, Virginia, and Louise Jones of Chicago, Illinois; Aunt, Magdalene McClenon of Baltimore, Maryland; Uncle, Ellis Jackson of Louisville, Kentucky; and a multitude of close relatives and friends., Walter Washington was employed by Beaumont Juvenile Complex, Greenwood Reality, Albemarle County Public School Transportation Department, Acme Visible Records, Morton Frozen Foods and Richmond Beneficial and Universal Life Insurance Company. Walter retired as a State of Virginia employee from Albemarle/Charlottesville Joint Complex., Walter was very active with Piedmont Baptist Church and the community. He served as a Deacon at Piedmont Baptist Church for close to 40 years and sang with Piedmont's choir for longer than most can remember. Walter served on the Charlottesville/ Albemarle Deacon and Deaconess Council and Youth Division. He served as past President of a Local (AFLCIO) Teamsters Union at Acme Visible Records. He was a member of American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW). Walter served faithfully as Secretary of FAAYM Pride of VA 122 Charlottesville, VA Masonic Lodge, where he also earned the distinction of honorary past Worshipful Master. Walter's deep bass voice afforded him singing opportunities with famous groups like The Ink Spots and The Platters. He performed with 88 Keys Wilson, Billy Hearns and a number of "Battle of The Band" local competitions as well as fundraising events for Chihamba's African American Cultural Arts Festival scholarships. His bass singing talent was heard with the Gospel Crusaders, Gospel Uniques and a host of other gospel choirs and groups throughout Virginia and other states. Walter's voice was so loved by many that he was called upon often to render impromptu solos. Walter was honored to serve when his grandsons requested he take on the role of Santa Clause at Western Albemarle High School in early 2000. It was Walter's joy to sing and to serve., Most would agree that in one minute, Walter was a man you had not met before but, he would make you feel like you had been friends forever. That first meeting with Walter Washington would feel like a reunion with an old friend. Walter's smile was warm and inviting, his laughter was infectious, his handshake dependable, listening to his deep baritone/bass voice whether he was talking, telling a story or singing "Tis The Old Ship of Zion", you were mesmerized with spirit, awed with wisdom, and captured with love., Funeral services will be held 12 p.m. Saturday January 8, 2011, at Crozet Baptist Church, 5804 Saint George Avenue, Crozet, VA 22932., Interment will follow at Piedmont Baptist Church Cemetery, Yancey Mills, Virginia., Family visitation will be held at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the start of the funeral., Anita and the family extend heart felt wishes of thanks to the excellent team of health care providers at Martha Jefferson Hospital; Dr. Bruce Clements; Dr. Stefan Gorsch and HOPE Center staff; ICU and 6th floor medical staff.
