Addie Young Rountree, 90, of Colonial Heights, passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, at the Colonial Heights Health Care Center., She was the widow of David Vernon Rountree, and the daughter of the late Simion and Addie Sorrell Young. Mrs. Rountree was preceded in death by brothers, Caswell Young, Numa Young, Nuel Young, Emil Young and Floyd Lee Young. She was a member of the Highland United Methodist Church, the Colonial Heights Federated Women's Club, Colonial Heights Garden Club, and formerly the Country Club of Petersburg, where she was an avid golfer. Mrs. Rountree enjoyed traveling and being with her friends., She leaves two daughters, Suzanne Rountree of Chesterfield and Dr. Joan Rountree Carl of Richmond; two grandchildren, Hannah Carl and David Carl. She is also survived by two sisters, Nancy Heilman and Kathleen Starling; and a brother, Bonny Young, all of Raleigh, N.C., A graveside funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, in Sunset Memorial Park, Chester, with the Rev. Albert Franklin King BRISTOL, Va. Albert Franklin King, age 80, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born Aug. 30, 1930, to the late John M. King and Gertrude Walling King. He had lived in Bristol most of his life and was a member of Belle Meadows Baptist Church. Mr. King loved attending church and enjoyed being an usher at Belle Meadows Baptist. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Arthur King, Andrew King, Troy King, and Robert King; two sisters, Gladys Frye and Hazel King, and a brother-in-law, Charles Cornelius. Survivors: sister, Althea Cornelius; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010, from the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sam Haynes, Rev. Dewey Williams, and Rev. Darrell Fritts officiating. The family will receive friends from 6-8 prior to the funeral service. Alice West Alexander

Alice West Dorrier Alexander died on Thursday, September 9, 2010, in Charlottesville, Virginia., She was born on September 2, 1915, in Clifton Forge, Virginia, the daughter of Julia Bentley Wysor West and Thomas Fendol West. She grew up in Salem, Virginia, and attended schools there. She attended Roanoke College and graduated from Harrisonburg State Teachers College, now James Madison University., She taught school in Ivy Depot, Virginia, and married Charles Richard Dorrier Jr. of Scottsville, Virginia in 1938. After his death in 1985, she married William D. Alexander III of Pawleys Island, South Carolina, who also predeceased her. In addition she was predeceased by her son, Charles Richard Dorrier III., She was an active member of the Presbyterian Church USA, singing in the choirs of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church of Richmond, Virginia, and First Presbyterian Church of Old Hickory, Tennessee. She led Presbyterian women's organizations in Nashville, Tennessee. After raising her family, she graduated from the O'Moore School of Design in Franklin, Tennessee. She was a founding partner in Surround Interiors, an interior design company in Nashville., She is survived by three children, Alice Dorrier Bonner of Atlanta, Georgia, and her husband, John T. Bonner, Thomas Bentley Dorrier of Madison, Virginia, and his wife, Barbara M. Kell, and Nancy Lee Dorrier of Davidson, North Carolina, and her partner, Mervil M. Paylor. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Ellen Bonner Oliver of Blacksburg, Virginia, and her husband, Eric Oliver, Charles Dorrier Bonner of Atlanta, Georgia, and his wife, Penny D. Cannon, Thomas Alexander Hazel of Davidson, North North Carolina, and his wife, Stephanie R. Glaser, Alice-Lyle Hazel Hickson of Blythewood, South Carolina, and her husband, Edwin S. Hickson Jr., Charles Richard Dorrier IV and Benjamin Blake Dorrier, both of Alexandria, Virginia. Six great grandchildren survive her, Catalina West Oliver, Robert Phillip Hazel, Thomas Alexander Hazel Jr., Davis Alexander Hickson, Julia Grace Hickson, William Eli Hickson, and Ruth Cannon Bonner. She is also survived by her sister, Margaret West Streat of Gloucester, Virginia, and many nieces and nephews., A memorial service will be held at the Scottsville Methodist Church, 11 a.m Saturday, October 23, 2010., In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Staff Christmas gift at Martha Jefferson House, 1600 Gordon Avenue, Charlottesville VA 22903; or Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville VA 22911., Thacker Brothers Funeral Home in Scottsville is handling the arrangements.

Bedrick Benjamin Sulc, 78, of Prince George, passed away on Monday, Sept. 14, 2010., Mr. Sulc was born in Prince George and had been a life-time resident. He was preceded in death by his parents, Benjamin Sulc Sr. and Julia Kreicar Sulc; a son, Bedrick Benjamin "Bennie" Sulc Jr.; and two sisters, Virginia Tomko and Nancy Tanner. He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force, retired from Allied Chemical Corp. with more than 30 years service and was a longtime member of Powers Memorial Baptist Church. Belle Phelps Lindsey Belle Phelps Lindsey, 83, of Lynchburg, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, peacefully in her home. She was the wife of the late William B. Lindsey. Born in Appomattox on Dec. 4, 1926, she was a daughter of the late Ira B. Phelps and Edla Eagle Phelps. Belle was a retired seamstress at Courtland Manufacturing Company and was a member of Campbell Avenue Baptist Church. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Ronald B. Lindsey; three sisters, Dorothy Estelle Reed, Nanny (Kate) Justis and Elsie Phelps Nash; two borthers, Ira B. Phelps Jr. and Lawrence (Mike) Phelps; and one son-in-law, James Zegarelli. She is survived by four loving children, Danny R. Lindsey, of Lynchburg, Kenneth W. Lindsey and his wife, Kathy, Bonnie L. Mays and her husband, Larry, and Tammy L. Zegarelli, all of Madison Heights; 10 precious grandchildren, Becky Dunivan and husband, Terry, Sharon Hise and husband, Johnny, Carrie Payne, Krystal Mays, April Yarborough and husband, Jon, Adrian Payne, Megan Lindsey, Billy Lindsey, Harris Carroll and wife, Ellie, and John Stone; and nine precious great-grandchildren. Bertha Christine Adams Bertha Christine Adams, 77, of Lynchburg, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010, in Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the widow of Robert Leland Adams. She was also preceded in death by a son, Derrick Adams in 1969. Born July 16, 1933, in Amherst County, she was a daughter of the late Hamner Brown and Nellie Marie Story. She was an active member of Forest Road United Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Cynthia "Cindy" Warren, and her husband, Charles "Chuck," of Blue Ridge, Ga.; one grandson, Jesse Warren, of Washington state, currently serving in the U.S. Army; a beloved nephew, Bill Brent, and his life partner, Robert Wright, of Greensboro, N.C.; and a niece, Rene'e Adams Lester, and her family, of Floyd. Christine spent her life as a dedicated caregiver to her family and friends. She will be missed by all of her friends, including James Brent and Kathryn Adams who were with her to the end. She will be remembered by her laugh, her caring nature, her gift of accepting people for who they are, her love of the color pink and her love of dolls. COTZIAS, Betty Ginos, 86, died on Monday, September 13, 2010 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Richmond, Va. Mrs. Cotzias was born in Springfield, Illinois, but moved with her family back to their native country of Greece when she was five. Mrs. Cotzias grew up in Greece, where she worked for the Greek Underground Resistance during World War II and was imprisoned for a short time. She escaped from the Nazi prison during a lapse in security on Hitler's birthday, and shortly after returned to the United States. In 1952, she married George Constantin Cotzias and moved to Bellport, Long Island, N.Y. During the 1950s, Mrs. Cotzias worked for the Greek Consulate, where she had diplomatic status. She is survived by her son, Constantin; two granddaughters, Nikita and Zoe; and a brother, James Ginos. The family will receive friends 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, September 17, at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Avenue, Richmond, Va. Interment private.

DILLARD, Betty Main, 84, of Richmond, died on September 13, 2010. Our loving and devoted mother was born in Mt. Carmel, Illinois, on April 25, 1926. She moved to Richmond, Va., where she married John N. Dillard in 1949. Coleman Jr., and Charles J. Coleman of Washington; four daughters, Mary A. Coleman of Louisa, Joslyn Shelton and Jean M. Boland Jr.; his mother, Frances Meetze; his wife, Anne Kleckley Boland; and his daughter, Rachael Ann. He is survived by his son, Russell S. Boland; and sister, Cynthia (Scott) Nixon. Steve was a partner with MMB Consulting and a financial representative for Northwestern Mutual. Steve had an undergraduate degree and an MBA from the University of South Carolina and was a published author. He was active in the community and a proud member of Three Chopt Presbyterian Church. Steve was loved and respected by everyone he touched and will be greatly missed. Christie Eugene CHESAPEAKE - Christie Eugene, 82, of the 200 block of Scarlett Drive, passed away Sept. 12, 2010 in Chesapeake. A native of New York City, he was the son of the late Apostolos and Antigone Eugenides. He retired from the Norfolk Fire Department as captain from Station No. 10 after 30 years of service. He was a member of The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He was a graduate of Old Dominion University, founder of the Norfolk Fire Department Credit Union and was a member and past president of CUNA, and was a Blue Lodge Mason and Shriner. He is survived by his beloved wife of 13 years, Theresa T. Eugene; his daughter, Cynthia L. Dowling and husband Hampton of Washington, D.C.; three sons, Christie P. Eugene Jr. of Virginia Beach, Craig W. Eugene and wife Barbara of Atlanta, and Paul T. Eugenides of Virginia Beach; a sister, Penelope Eugenides of New York; a brother, William Eugenides of Florida; nine grandchildren; and the Butler family. A funeral will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral with the Very Rev. Archmandrite Ambrose Bitziades- Bowers and the Rev. Diana Carol Wallace CASTLEWOOD, Va. Diana Carol Wallace, 60, died Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at her home. She was born in Castlewood, the daughter of Edna Kaylor Hall and the late James A. Hall Jr. She was a graduate of Castlewood High School, Clinch Valley College, and received her master's degree from the University of Virginia. She was the executive director of the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens. She was a member of the Brick Baptist Church in Castlewood and also attended Rocky Grove Baptist Church in Gatlinburg, Tenn. She is survived by two daughters, Rachelle Krank and husband, Marc of Louisville, Ky., and Rebecca Harrison and husband, Randy of Damascus, Va.; three sisters, Dolly Wallace and husband, Don of Castlewood, Patty Gibson and husband, Oakley of Castlewood, and Pamela Hall of Jackson, Tenn.; two brothers, James Martin and wife, Maureen of Tuttle, Okla., and Robert "Bob" Allen Hall of Griffin, Ga.; four grandchildren, Connor Harrison, Halle Harrison, Rylan Krank, and Ashlyn Krank; several nieces and nephews; and her family of friends from Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens. Dorothy Simpson Bailey VIRGINIA BEACH - Dorothy Mae Simpson Bailey, 96, of 3100 Shore Drive, passed away Sept. 14, 2010. Born in Washington, D.C., April 8, 1914, she was the only child of the late Walter Scott Simpson and Elsie Berry Simpson. Dorothy graduated from McKinley High School in the District of Columbia. In 1938 she married James McKelvy Newkirk Bailey, started her family during the war years and raised them in Washington, D.C. Dorothy worked for many years on the staff of the Pathfinder Printing Company in Washington, and later retired in 1979 from the D.C. Chapter of the American Red Cross National Capital Area, District of Columbia Office, after 20 years of service. In 1990 she moved to Virginia Beach where she resided at Westminster-Canterbury and attended Eastern Shore Chapel. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1973 and their son, James Jr. ("Buddy") in 1992. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Linda B. Brown and husband Noel ("Skip") of Virginia Beach; her son, Walter S. Bailey and wife Kathi of Paulsbo, Wash.; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. The family would like to acknowledge and express their appreciation to all the special care givers at the Westminster-Canterbury Hoy Center, especially 1 B floor, and to Odyssey Healthcare for their loving care, concern, devotion and friendship they gave Dorothy during her residency. Dorothy Tazewell Hume VIRGINIA BEACH - Dorothy Tazewell Hume, 83, died Sept. 15, 2010. A loving wife and devoted mother, Dot was born in Norfolk on Dec. 21, 1926. She was a graduate of The Graham School in Norfolk and Stratford Junior College in Danville. Following college, she worked for the Norfolk School Board for many years. She was a Realtor with GSH Real Estate, a member of the Junior League of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, The Garden Club of Norfolk and The Colonial Dames of Virginia. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach. Dot was predeceased by her parents, Littleton Waller Tazewell and Cordelia deJarnette Tazewell, formerly of Norfolk, and her sisters, Grace Tazewell Flowers and her husband Paul Rutledge Flowers of Dothan, Ala., and Lousia Walke Tazewell of Charlottesville, Va. She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Joseph Stuart Hume, and her sister Cordelia Tazewell Baldwin and her husband William Barton Baldwin. She is also survived by her children, Joseph Stuart Hume Jr., William Bradford Hume, John Hamilton Hume, wife Anita, Jean Hume Taliaferro, husband Kem, Dorie Hume Fuller, husband Webb, and Isabel Claiborne Hume. In addition she is survived by grandchildren, Carol, Linda and Anne Hume, Myers, Taz and Cordelia Fuller, and Stuart and Christian Taliaferro and and many loving nieces and nephews. Dot will long be remembered for her kind heart and gentle spirit. She was a gracious hostess and a true Southern lady. She created a warm and loving home, not only for her family, but whoever walked through her doors. She always recognized the best in everyone. The enormous void left in our hearts will be filled by memories of her love and generosity. She will be missed dearly. Bootsy was employed at Rubicon Hope, formerly The Turning Point in Petersburg, Va., where he was known for his dedication and compassion toward the clients. Bootsy also was the team consultant to the Petersburg High School football team and was one of their biggest fans. His heart and support was always with the team., He will be remembered for his laughter, jokes, and dedication to helping and encouraging others, especially the youth. For many years she played the piano at Mount Ed Baptist Church and the organ at Holy Cross Episcopal Church. George N. Hathaway CHESAPEAKE - George Nathaniel Hathaway Jr., 90, passed away peacefully Monday, Sept. 13, 2010. He was born in Norfolk County to the late George Nathaniel and Annye Bell Hathaway. George was a veteran of World War II and the Korean conflict. He retired from supervisor of Shipbuilding in Newport News after 35 years of service and had also worked for Holmes Brothers Enterprises and Twiford Funeral Home. George was an active member of the Hickory United Methodist Church. He was a charter member of the Hickory Ruritan Club, a 50-year member of the Great Bridge Masonic Lodge No. 257, and a member of the Shrine and Khedive Temple. George was a former member of the Chesapeake Planning Commission. Left to cherish his memory are wife of 58 years, Anne B. Hathaway; sons, Barry Hathaway (Jackie) of Chesapeake and Jeffery Hathaway (Caryn) of Manteo, N.C.; five grandchildren, Allison and Marc of Chesapeake, Kevin, Courtney and Mabel of Manteo, N.C.; and a nephew, Carl Hanbury (Dorcas). Joann Hagy Leonard Joann Hagy Leonard, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 15, 2010, after a courageous battle with cancer at the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol Tennessee. She was 78. Mrs. Leonard had lived her entire life in the Bristol area. She was a member of Avoca Christian Church and was employed a number of years at the Raytheon Company. She was preceded in death by her parents, Sherman and Narcie Durham; one brother, David "Jackie" Durham; and her late husband, James Leonard. He was born Jan. 30, 1923 to the late Benjamin Haywood and Cular Hodges. Mr. Haywood was a dedicated lifelong member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Portsmouth, where he served on several ministries including the Sick and Shut-In Ministry and Birthday Ministry. He was the director of the Non-Profit Ministry of the church. He also faithfully attended Bible Study. He was a graduate of the I.C. Norcum High School, Class of 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Haywood retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 38 years of service. He was a boiler maker in Shop 41 and was later promoted to a planner and estimator. He was a member of the Bon Secours Pulmonary Group where he received a certificate and special honors. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eula Haywood; a daughter, Carolyn Carr; and a brother, William "Squeak" Haywood. Left to cherish his precious memory is his daughter, Mrs. Verona H. Moore (Garyl Sr.) of York, Pa.; three grandchildren, Nicholas Carr (Barbara), Garyl Moore Jr. and Leland Moore; one great-grandchild, Zachary Carr; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She is also survived by her grandchildren, James H. Culpepper V and wife Miranda of Taipei, Taiwan, Catherine Baldwin Culpepper of White Plains, N.Y., Christopher Broughton Osborne, Eric Hayes Osborne and wife Jessica, and Whitney Catherine Charlton and husband Matthew, all of Norfolk, as well as great-grandchildren, Oscar and Hannah Culpepper and Natalie Osborne. Lila is survived as well by her sister, Mary Elizabeth Jones of Rescue, Va., and her sister-in-law Bediz Sawyer of Izmir, Turkey, and many nieces and nephews. Lila was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She will be greatly missed until we see her again. Louise Aswell Hankins VIRGINIA BEACH - Louise Aswell Hankins, 89, of Virginia Beach, went to be with the Lord and join her son and family in heaven early Friday morning, Sept. 10, 2010. She was born in the Cypress Chapel area of Nansemond County, the daughter of the late Susie Jones Aswell and Augustus Grimm Aswell. Louise retired from Gladstone Auction Company in Norfolk after many years of service. She was blessed to have enjoyed an exciting life that included travel to numerous countries all over the world. Louise loved God, her church, family and friends, all of whom completed her life. She possessed a charm, wit and spirit uniquely her own. Louise will always be missed, never forgotten and forever loved. Louise was predeceased by her son, Louie Herbert Hankins Jr.; and her brothers and sisters, Blanche, Mary, Daniel Vernon, Lilly Mae, Willie Thomas, Hattie, Margaret and Charlie. Lyda Chesnutt Osborne COLUMBIA, S.C. Lyda Chesnutt Osborne, 100, died of natural causes on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010. Born in Big Stone Gap, Va., on Jan. 27, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Paul White and Minnie Mae Baker Chesnutt. Mrs. Osborne, wife of the late James Warren Osborne, was a longtime member of Beech Grove United Methodist Church in Bristol Virginia. She continued her membership at the church even after moving to Columbia several years ago. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and John Spurgeon; four grandchildren, David Spurgeon (Jackie) of Weston, Fla., Janie Adams (Doug) of Chapin, Bill Spurgeon (Janine) of Plano, Texas, Kathy Marsha of Columbia; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. The family sends special and heartfelt thanks to the management and staff of Forest Pines Retirement Home, as well as Ann Marie Anderson and her staff of "Caring For You" for the warm and loving care during Lyda's 13 years at Forest Pines. On Sunday morning, Sept. 12, 2010, in the pre-dawn stillness, Mrs. Margaret Leavelle Watson Reed, widow of Dr. William T. Reed, slipped quietly into eternity., Born in Clarksville, Tenn., on Sept. 1, 1915, she was the daughter of Martin A. Leavelle and Percilla Belle Leavelle, who predeceased her. She was also preceded in death by her son, John Thomas Watson; sisters, Justine Bruner, Katherine Roberts, Clara Leavelle and Cynthia Leavelle; sister-in-law, Berethenia Leavelle., A charming, captivating child who excelled in school, Margaret became a comely, artistically talented young lady. Her thirst for knowledge and desire to teach children led her to the pursuit of academic excellence and a life of scholastic achievement and service. Upon her graduation from Burt High School in 1933, she enrolled in Tennessee State University, a segregated Land Grant College in Nashville, Tenn. Four years later she "Graduated with Highest Distinction" from college. She was also inducted into the Phi Beta Tau Chapter, Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society and the American Dietetic Association. Armed with a B.S. degree in technical home economics, she was hired by TSU as an assistant teacher in 1937. Two years subsequently, while employed as a food and nutrition teacher at Prairie View College, Prairie View, Texas, she completed her thesis: "A Study of Factors Affecting the Specific Gravity of Food Mixtures." She received her M.S. degree in food and nutrition (registered dietician) and child development from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, in 1938., While pursuing her education and participating in job and church-related activities, she traveled extensively throughout the contiguous United States, Canada and Mexico. She performed advanced post graduate study at Prairie View College; Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.; and Virginia State College (University). She also earned certificates in methods of teaching chefs,tailoring, millinery and cake decorating. Always intellectually inquisitive, Margaret took numerous continuing education courses, among them physiology, anatomy, art for teachers, math for teachers, reading for teachers and child development. She never tired of reading and learning new things., During a career spanning five decades, Margaret lived in several different communities, ranging far afield from her rural beginnings. She taught food and nutrition at Prairie View College, Texas; Lincoln University, Jefferson City, Mo.; and North Carolina Central College (University), Durham, N.C. She taught commercial foods at Virginia State University for five years; served as acting director of home economics for one year at Morgan College, Md.; and director, home economics and food and nutrition at St. Paul's College, Lawrenceville, Va. She held supervisory positions in the nursery/elementary school programs at Prairie View College (1945-1947) and Virginia State University (1955-1956). Margaret retired in June 1978, after teaching in the Chesterfield County, Va., school system for 16 years., Margaret was a devout Christian. She loved the Lord; she loved to serve Him and let her light shine in her daily life. She was confirmed at St. Titus Episcopal Church, Durham. N.C., on June 1, 1949. On May 30, 1953 she, transferred her membership to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 228 Halifax St., Petersburg, Va., remaining a communicant there until her death. At the age of 80 years old, she officially became a "Diamond" of the church, although she had long been a precious jewel in St. Stephen's crown. A faithful congregant, Margaret supported her church with her prayers, presence, her tithes and offerings; not to mention her lighter than air yeast rolls, the feathery, mile-high cakes and other delectable dishes that became staples of St. Stephen's feasts., While her children were growing up, she taught them to serve by her example of teaching an elementary church school class, volunteering as an advisor to the Girl Scout troop, being a very active mom in the Jack & Jill Club of America, and observing the sacraments and teachings of the church. Through the years she manifested her commitment to St. Stephen's by functioning as treasurer of the Golden Age/Gold Card Club; vice chairman, Episcopal Church Women (ECW) Petersburg Convocation; chairman, ECW Petersburg Convocation; parish vice president, St. Stephen's ECW; senior warden, St. Stephen's Episcopal Church; member, St. Stephen's diocesan representative member, Department of Missions; Lay Ministry Commission, Diocese of Southern Virginia; and chairperson, nominations, Diocese of Southern Virginia. On Sept. 13, 1987, she was received into the Order of the Daughters of the King, an Episcopal order of prayer and service. It was a high point in her walk with Jesus and her prayer ministry., A long-time resident of Ettrick, Va., Margaret Reed was very much a citizen of Chesterfield County and the Petersburg/Tri-City area. She was a member and former chairperson of the Zimmer House Board of Managers. She was a volunteer with the Junior Red Cross, and Girl Scouts of America, she also devoted time to the elderly as a member of the Planning Council of the Gillfield Crater Nutrition Program and the Senior Citizens Council of Petersburg Planning Commission. Licensed by the IRS, she provided tax assistance to senior citizens for several years., Until she was well into her 80s, Margaret maintained a challenging schedule of activities, chauffeuring herself around town wherever she needed to go. In addition to her church and community activities, she belonged to several bridge clubs, including The Collegiate Bridge Club, the Big Slammers and The Twelve of Us. Her professional affiliations included the American Teachers Association (ATA), Virginia Teachers Association (VTA), American Dietetic Association (ADA), National Education Association (NEA), Virginia Education Association (VEA), Chesterfield Education Association (CEA). She was a life member of her beloved Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Margaret was the epitome of elegance and grace. She was always beautifully attired, dressed stylishly in clothing of her own creation. She delighted in cooking, baking, sewing and maintaining an immaculately tasteful home. Her favorite things were her family, her church, and her friends., She will always be loved and remembered, but sorely missed, by her daughters, Katherine W. Coles and Deborah W. BARRETT, Mark D., 41, of Chesterfield, passed away September 14, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Tanya; his children, Madison and Reese; his parents, Patricia and John; sister, Michele Morris and her husband, Keith; sisters-in-law, Amanda Bobbitt and Jennifer Fox and her husband, Mark; four nieces and nephews, Chance, Jessica, Michael and Tye. Mark was currently employed with the Virginia State Police and a member of the Search and Recovery Team. He was also a former funeral director with Bliley's Funeral Home. Mark lived life to the fullest playing soccer with his buddies, diving, the Dallas Cowboys, spending his time in Deltaville, and most of all, the time he spent with his family. CARTER, Miss Mary N., died at Johnston-Willis Hospital on Sunday, September 5, 2010, following a massive stroke. She was born in Sandy Hook, Virginia, on March 21, 1923. Moving to Richmond at an early age, she attended the public schools and graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School. Afterwards, she was educated at Mary Washington College. Miss Carter worked for the Life Insurance Company of Virginia until she retired to care for her aging parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank W. Carter. Miss Carter's interests were many and varied: serving in different capacities at Tabernacle Baptist Church; traveling throughout the world; gardening; babysitting; and doing needlework of all kinds. In recent years, Miss Carter enjoyed life at Spring Arbor of Salisbury Residential Assisted Living in Midlothian, Virginia, where she kept busy with her friends at worship services, musical programs, exercise classes, baking activities, and afternoon teas. Her loving, sweet, gentle, and generous spirit blessed all those who knew her. They are included as survivors along with her family: Caralie Brown; Diana Chandler and sons, Robert and Michael; Elizabeth N. Clements and daughters, Mary Anne and Carolyn, grandchildren Edward, Casey, Melissa, Christina, and Brittany and seven great-grandchildren; Steve and Nancye Gaj and son, Carter; Beanie Kelly and children, Paul and Caran; Roland and Louise Metcalf and children, Kimberly and Benson; and Helen Parrish. In 1987 Melissa attended Sentara's Cardio Vascular School after which she worked at Sentara Norfolk General Hopsital and Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters as a cardiovascular tech in the Cath Lab. She loved her work and was dedicated to those she cared for as well as her many co-workers. She is survived by her loving husband of 34 years, Jack; her children, Heather Carpenter, Jason Carpenter, Amy Carpenter-Bryan and Chris Carpenter; her grandchildren, Savanna, Sadie and Isabelle Clark and Tyler Bryan, her mother, Pauline Hurd, her brother Phillip Hurd and wife Evie; her sister, Debbie Wingfield; nephews and nieces, Jeff and Caitlin Hurd, E.C. Olin L. Roberson Jr. CHESAPEAKE - Olin Lendon Roberson Jr., 86, passed away peacefully at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center Sept. 13, 2010 with family by his side. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Olin L. Roberson of Georgia. Raised in Georgia, he was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army. He retired from the Naval Air Rework Facility at the Naval Air Station in Norfolk after more than 30 years of service. His hobbies included boat racing, metal machining, and short wave radio. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 65 years, Grace D. Roberson; his son, Olin L. Roberson III of Chesapeake; and grandsons Mark and Michael. Services will be private. Owen A. Osfolk PORTSMOUTH - Owen Anton Osfolk, 12 weeks old, died in his parents' arms at Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters in Norfolk on Sept. 13, 2010. After conquering a premature birth, he unexpectedly contracted a bacteria infection and passed gently into the arms of Jesus. Owen is the son of Kevin and Mandi Osfolk of Portsmouth. He is the answer to their prayers, and they waited for his birth with joyful expectation. During his brief visit on earth, he captured the hearts of everyone and was held close by his parents and grandparents. He was loved by all who met him, and will be greatly missed. A graveside service will be held Friday, Sept. 17, at 3 p.m. at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens in Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made in Owen Osfolk's name to the Special Care Unit of Norfolk General Hospital. He was a member of First Buffalo Baptist Church, Long Island, an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and an employee of the Philadelphia School District. Surviving are two sons, Troy Pannell, of Camp Springs, Md., and Edward Pannell, of Philadelphia, Pa.; one daughter, Yvette Pannell, of Oxon Hill, Md.; four brothers, Ronnie, Herbert and Carl Pannell, of Long Island, and William Pannell, of Ft. Washington, Md.; four sisters, Barbara Pannell and Beth Ann Thomas and Gloria Pannell, all of Long Island, and Eleaser Burrell, of Garner, N.C.; three grandchildren; and a host of other relatives. He was preceded in death by a brother, Lloyd Pannell. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, from First Buffalo Baptist Church by the Rev. Samuel Mitchell with interment in the church cemetery. Viewing and visitation will be Saturday at the church from noon until the time of the service. Raymond J. Amoreno CHESAPEAKE - Raymond J. Amoreno, 95, born July 30, 1915 in New York, N.Y., died Sept. 11, 2010. He was a World War II disabled veteran. He retired from the police force at the Norfolk Naval Base in 1973 and from the City of Virginia Beach as a golf course equipment mechanic in 1980. He was a member of the St. Matthew's Men's Club, the DAV No. 26, the Police Association of Virginia, the Knights of Columbus No. 10601 and No. 1162, the Alhambra Padul 69, and the South Norfolk Seniors Club. He was predeceased by his wife, Frances Amoreno. Survivors include four children, Frances Walker, Mickey and Bonnie Amoreno, Tom Amoreno and Jane Caldwell, and Jane Amoreno; 11 grandchildren, Susan, Ric and Joey Spears, Bill Walker, Frank, Carla, Marissa and Megan Walker, Mike, Rayna, Ruth and AJ Amoreno, Sandra, Steve, Tucker, Genny and Roan Weber, PJ Amoreno and Sam Kenkel; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. BATTENFIELD, Richard J., 84, of Glen Allen, Va., departed this life on Monday, September 13, 2010. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Bettie P. Battenfield; his brother, Chris Battenfield and his wife, Jo, of Mechanicsville, Va.; his sister-in-law, Emily Gill of Richmond; and his brother-in-law, Beck Payne and his wife, Jean, of Aberdeen, Miss.; and four devoted daughters, Janice Green, Debbie Davis, Christy Cottrell and Kim Watts, all from the Richmond area. He is also survived by two sons-in-law, David Cottrell and Mark Watts. "Dickie Bird," as he was lovingly referred to by his grandchildren, was blessed with seven grandchildren, preceded in death by Daniel Connock, and survived by Danielle Taupier, Tony Biondi, Janelle Connock, Shawn Davis, Jamie Davis and Leah Cottrell. Dick was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1926. The family moved to Louisa County, Va., during the Great Depression. He later moved to Glen Allen, where he and his wife were proud residents for over 60 years. Dick worked for National Linen for over 20 years and then founded Battenfield Construction. He and his wife enjoyed an early retirement and spent 25 years wintering in Key Largo, Fla., with great friends and memories they both cherished. All who knew Dick would say he was a hardworking man who sported cool cars and loved practical jokes. He has a way of making you laugh, even in the toughest of times. We would like to thank his personal aide, Gloria Scott, for her compassionate care for our parents, as well as the staff, nurses and hospice care provided by Chestnut Grove. The family will have visitation on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Bliley's-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road. Reid, 83, passed away on Wednesday, September 15, 2010, at her home., She was the daughter of the late Jerry Bledsoe and Lillian Tomlin Wade., Spicy was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence L. Reid; a brother, Jerry Wade; and five sisters, Helen Wilson, Velma Davis, Jean Welch, Ora June Benton, and Amelia Ann Bowden., She is survived by two sons, David A. Ross and John W. Ross; three daughters, Susan R. Walker, Karen R. Bartelme and Joan C. Sutton. She is also survived by three stepchildren, Gary A. Reid, Kenneth L. Reid and Brenda S. Jones. She leaves eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews., Spicy enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, quilting, tatting, and all crafts. Susan Wright, Susan Wright, 56, of Barboursville, passed away on Thursday, September 9, 2010, at her home., Born in Baltimore and raised outside Annapolis, Susan spent grade school summers sailing with family on the Chesapeake Bay. She attended Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, where she created her own major, Contemporary Humanities, to concentrate on the 20th century, minoring in Journalism. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa., After college, she returned to Baltimore to write about news and neighborhoods for local newspapers and Food and Fine Living Magazine, until she was hired by the mayor to work in his press office. While handling PR for the infamous Mayor William Donald Schaefer, she also worked on her Masters in Administrative Science at Johns Hopkins University. Her success in local politics led to a stint as press secretary to a Pennsylvania congressman in the first $1 million congressional race. It was a nail-biter: her candidate won by less than a half percent., Susan returned to her roots after that, plying her writing skills in the world of boats and all things marine. At the Boat Owner's Association of the United States (BOAT/US) she wrote educational materials for boaters on topics like life jackets, emergency maneuvers and equipment, boating safety, plus product testing articles aimed at educating boating consumers on how to select and properly use boating equipment., Family and business matters brought both Susan and David back to Virginia in 2005, which is when Susan joined Plow and Hearth as a copywriter., She loved to read, travel, sail, swim, sun (anything at the beach) and compete in dog agility trials with her four-legged child, Scooter the wily fox terrier., In addition to her husband, Susan is survived by her parents, George and Jane Gardill Koran of Port Charlotte, Florida; her brother, Bruce Koran of High Point, North Carolina; and her sister, Andrea Robey of Severna Park, Maryland., A gathering of friends to celebrate Susan's life will be held at Hill and Wood Funeral Home, 4 until 6 p.m. Saturday, September 18, 2010., In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions in Susan?s name to the Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Way, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911

Thomas Ashby Newby

Thomas Ashby Newby Thomas Ashby Newby, 95, of Richmond, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010. Son of the late Thomas Edward Newby and Otey Barden Newby, he was a native of Amelia County, born June 8, 1915. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Ripley Newby. He is survived by three children, Thomas A. Newby Jr. and his wife, Charlotte, Judith N. Kerr and S. Kent Newby and his wife, Elizabeth; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. His family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 18, 2010, at Bliley's - Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Road. A graveside service will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, 2010, at Sandy Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Amelia. Mr. Newby attended Virginia Mechanics Institute in Richmond and Richmond Professional Institute and the University of Richmond. He began his career at VDOT in 1935 as an engineering aide. He worked his way up through various positions, serving as safety engineer, purchasing agent from 1958 to 1978 before retiring as Director of Administration in 1980. He served as past President of the Virginia Association of Governmental Purchasing. He was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Boards of Directors of the Virginia Chapter of the Risk Insurance Management Society and the State Credit Union. During World War II, he served in Iceland and the European Theatre as a Captain in the Corp of Engineers 80th Division, retiring as a Lt. Col. from the Army Reserve. He was a charter member of Bon Air Baptist Church, where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher. The children wish to express their deepest appreciation and love to the Bon Air neighbors and friends, the Bon Air Baptist Church community and the employees at VDOT for enriching the lives of their parents and their own families for over 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel Henry Carter and Johnnie Lee Matthews Carter; 10 brothers and sisters, Wilbur, George, Sam, Herbert, Kitty, Helen, Margaret, Richard, Delores and Harry. He is survived by his brother, Leonard Carroll Carter and his wife, Barbara; four children, Vickie Carter McKinley, David Wayne Carter, Thomas O'Connell Carter Jr. and Bryan Keith Carter; grandchildren, Fred, Rebecca, Jennifer and James Weymouth, David, Daniel, Joseph, Michael, Christopher, Jeremy, Sean, Rose, Kelly and Mauve Carter; great-grandchildren, Cambell, Riley, Victoria, Alivia, Alexandria, Mallory, Liam, Lexi and Ariel Marie; a host of nieces and nephews, and longtime friend, Minnie Mitchell. Mr. Carter was a U.S. Army veteran serving with the 82nd Airborne Division. Travis K. Owens CAMDEN - Travis Kenneth Owens, 74, went home to be with Jesus on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2010 at his residence. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and retired from the Virginia Army National Guard 111th Artillery in Portsmouth. After retirement, he worked as a lawnmower mechanic in Sunbury, N.C., and Chesapeake. In the early 1970s, he and his wife, Dorothy, leased and operated Halstead Ranch in Chesapeake. Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Grimes Owens; daughters, Charlan and Michelle Owens of Camden, and Kennie Owens Williams and husband Bill of Suffolk; brothers, "R.B." and Wilton Owens of Macclesfield, N.C. She was born in Floyd and was the daughter of the late General Jewel and Gazelle Robertson Weeks. She was also predeceased by two brothers, General J. Weeks, Jr. and Richard Weeks, and one niece, Julie Weeks. She retired from Raytheon after 38 years of service. After retirement, she was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels and League of Women voters She is survived by: her sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Aaron Russell of Rockville; three brothers and four sisters-in-law, Clyde and Mary Weeks of Chicago, Il, Carl and Selma Weeks of Fredericksburg, Allen and Katherine Weeks of Floyd and Sheila Weeks of Dedham, MA. Vernell Barnes Goodwyn PORTSMOUTH - Vernell Barnes Goodwyn, 72, of the 1400 block of Block Horne Ave., loved the Lord and transitioned to her eternal home Sept. 13, 2010, in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center. She was born in Wilson County, North Carolina and was a member of New First Baptist Church Taylorsville in Portsmouth, where she was a member of the concert choir. Mrs. Goodwyn retired as a senior lab technician with Proctor & Gamble, and was a longtime part-time customer service representative with QVC for 15 years. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, William L. Goodwyn; three daughters, Wanda Regina Jones, Carolene Goodwyn-Harris (Clinton) and O'neka Thorne; two sons, Tyrone Goodwyn Sr. (Adrienne), Daryl Hosea Goodwyn Sr. (Gwendolyn); her mother, Laurina Thorne; sister, Vivian Wilder (Clyde); brother, Alvin Thorne (Connie); seven grandchildren, Tyrone Jr., Riki, Christina, Daryl Jr., Gerrod, Chance and Maya; three great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Ernest Goodwyn and Prince Goodwyn; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. GREGG, Walter E. "Ned" Jr., of Kilmarnock, Va., formerly of Essex Fells, N.J., died peacefully on September 6, 2010, at 92. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lois Jenney Gregg; his daughter, Lois Julia Gregg; and his son, Thomson "Tom" Ray Gregg. He is survived by his brother, Roland; his sister, Betsy; his son, Walter E. "Ted" Gregg III and his wife, Sharilen C. Gregg; Tom's wife, Kristen V. Gregg; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Ned grew up in Baltimore, Md., graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1936. He graduated from Cornell University in 1939 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. For 37 years, he was a manufacturer's representative in the power transmission field. For 10 years, he was a regional sales manager and then a vice-president for Eaton Corp. Recently, he was employed by Jokell in Chesapeake, Va. He was a lifelong sailor on Long Island Sound, the Chesapeake Bay and the Caribbean. A memorial service will be held at Wicomico Episcopal Church in Wicomico Church, Va., at 2 p.m. on September 18.
