Dr. JOHN WITHROW

Dr. John Raynor Withrow Sr. Dr. John Raynor Withrow Sr., of Lynchburg, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010, at Lynchburg General Hospital. John was born on Nov. 11, 1937, in Norfolk, to parents Claude Albert Withrow and Minnie MacMullen, both deceased. The family moved to Lynchburg during John's early adolescence and he attended E.C. Glass High School, graduating in 1956. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lynchburg College in 1960 and an MAT and his PhD in Education from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1971. Dr. Withrow taught at many institutions of higher learning including Carroll College in Waukesha, Wis.I; Northern Illinois University in Dekalb,IL.; Eastern New Mexico State University in Portales, NM; and Samford University and Miles College in Birmingham, Ala. Eventually Dr. Withrow returned to teach at his Alma Mater, Lynchburg College. He was currently a professor at Virginia University of Lynchburg. John was a fierce advocate for the causes of civil rights and social justice. He participated in the march from Selma to Montgomery with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the summer of 1965 and was a current supporter of the Alliance for Democracy. John's support of these causes was not without professional sacrifice; he was censured by the Lynchburg school district during the late 1960's for inviting a peace activist into his middle school social studies classroom. John was a member of The Church of the Covenant in Lynchburg from the time he was a young man, and was so much a part of the history and life of the church. He attended the first official service of worship in Oct. 1954 and was on the board for many years. Even throughout his travels and his living in other parts of the country, John was always part of the church community. He was currently a member of the St. Francis of Assisi mission group with a focus on peace and justice. John was an avid birdwatcher, naturalist, and gardener as well. His ability to identify birds by their call alone was impressive and he had hundreds of birds on his life list. His other passions were history and politics and the search for the truth in each of those arenas. His intellect, passion for life and justice, and his delightful humor were flavorful seasonings in and among us. He is survived by wife Mary Jane Withrow of Lynchburg, sister Virginia Jackson of Garland, Tex.; son John Jr. (Chrys), of Fort Collins, CO; daughter Joanna Hall (Steve), of Forest Grove, OR; son Andrew of Rockford, IL; and step-daughters Shana Scudder of Greensboro, NC, and Callie Scudder of Richmond, VA. Dr. Withrow's grandchildren include grandsons Chip Remus of Aurora, CO; Brad and Michael Remus from Fort Collins, CO; and Emily and Julia Hall of Forest Grove, OR, as well as great grandchildren Sierra and Kenton Remus from Aurora, CO. "Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your master." Mathew 25:23 A memorial service will be held at The Church of the Covenant, 4415 Boonsboro Road, on Saturday, the 4th of Dec. at 2 p.m. A reception for family and friends will be held in the Lodge of the Fisherman on church grounds after the service. Donations in John's memory may be made to the Church of the Covenant. Tharp Funeral Home & Crematory, Lynchburg, is assisting the family, (434) 237-9424. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www. tharpfuneralhome.com.

Verona Henderson

Verona Claire Henderson Roanoke, Va. (1932-2010) For those who knew Verona professionally, she was a "legend." For those privileged to know Verona personally, she was marked by her strong character, wit, charm, integrity, resilience, loyalty, and intelligence. A pioneer in her field, and a devoted friend, daughter, mother, and grandmother, Verona contributed to her profession and to the lives of those she loved. To meet Verona was to be impressed, as her personality and humor could never go unnoticed. Verona was born on March 7, 1932, to William Thomas and Pauline Claire Henderson, and grew up in Abingdon, Va. Her parents owned and ran the Tru Blu Restaurant with family-style dining, a favorite among locals. Often called "Little Tom" as her father's daughter, Verona spent much of her childhood in the restaurant with her family, or, as she claimed, in trouble at the principal's office. This self proclaimed trouble-maker performed well in school. She graduated from Virginia Intermont College and received a doctor of pharmacy degree from the Medical College of Virginia. After her studies, she spent a few years teaching at the collegiate level. She abruptly re-directed her career away from the academic realm and switched to the "real world" after one of her students threatened that she would never survive outside the "ivory tower." Verona did more than just "survive" in the professional world, she thrived. One of the first female pharmacists in Southwest Virginia, and the first female manager of People's Drug, now CVS, she had a stellar career in a world dominated by men. She was the best in her trade and devoted herself to her work with 15-hour work days. From her point of view, eight hours was "part-time." Her business acumen was unmatched. Whenever a pharmacy in Southwest Virginia was financially challenged, Verona Henderson was the recovery guru. In addition to her working skills, she was always considerate of her colleagues, working holidays so as to ensure that other pharmacists could be home with their families. After Verona's father passed away in the late sixties, she took time to help her mother with the Tru Blu Restaurant. Beginning in the late seventies, they moved in together in Salem Va., with Verona both working as a pharmacist and looking after her mother. She retired in 1995, and shortly thereafter, the Christodoulides family moved into the house next door. A Greek couple, John and Olga, and their daughter, Marina, at first seemed like unlikely friends However, through Pauline's insistence, Verona agreed to come to their Christmas dinner that year. From that first dinner grew a beautiful friendship between two familiesa friendship that absolved the boundary between families and merged them into one. Pauline, Verona, John, Olga, and Marina spent time together daily, sharing meals and excursions. In 1996, Pauline passed away. Shortly thereafter, the Christodoulides were shopping for a new house and asked Verona to move in with them, and she agreed. WILLIAM GORMAN

GORMAN, William Patrick, died suddenly of a congenital heart defect at his home the evening of November 30, 2010. He was 17 years old, and a senior at both Godwin High School and the Center for the Arts at Henrico High School. He was an honors student preparing applications to art colleges. Patrick's triumphs over life-threatening illness throughout his life were numerous and astounding to the few who knew and understood. There were times when his parents were counseled to let him go, but Patrick surprised health professionals who thought they had seen it all. Most people were unaware of Patrick's many physical limitations, because he had an uncomplaining attitude and a beautiful smile. Patrick was a pioneer for the Aural Program for the Deaf in Henrico public schools. He was the first totally deaf child to successfully be mainstreamed with few accommodations. Several deaf students have followed that have benefited from Patrick's trail blazing. His gift as an artist was a wonder to those who beheld his paintings. His talent for producing accurate beauty was stunning. Patrick's drawings and paintings won many awards and praise. His friends at the Center for the Arts Honors School helped Patrick develop as a great artist through their competitiveness and encouragement. One of Patrick's self-portraits is displayed above. Patrick was a talented fly fisherman and skeet, trap and sporting clays shooter. He quickly outclassed his father/coach in both activities. In 2008, Patrick was part of a three-man shooting team that placed first in the Virginia State 4-H Senior Shotgun Championship, and first place in the Virginia State Scholastics Junior Clay Target Championship. In 2009, he competed in the National Scholastics Clay Target Championship in Sparta, Illinois. Patrick was best friend to his brother, Jack, and loved by his mother, Cabell, and father, Breck. As a baby, Patrick named his grandparents "Umpa" and "TooToo," and all the grandchildren who have followed know them by the names Patrick gave them. He was loved by all his aunts, uncles and cousins. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, December 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Christ Church Episcopal. Arrangements by the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad Street. A memorial fund to benefit educational travel for the students at the Henrico Center for the Arts has been created in his name. Donations may be made to: Friends of the Center for the Arts, memo: Patrick Gorman, 302 Azalea Ave., Henrico, Va. 23227.
