Adleen Larch Sisson

Adleen Larch Sisson, 94, of Roanoke, passed peacefully from this life Saturday, December 4, 2010, in Charlottesville., Preceding her in death were her husband, Raymond Taft Sisson; her parents, Flernow Larch and Maggie Zora Larch; her 10 brothers and sisters; and her son-in-law, James Raymond Gilchrist., Born and raised in Buchanan, Adleen graduated Buchanan High School where she played basketball. Soon after graduation she married Raymond who would be her loving husband for 67 years. A long-time member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church, she served as Treasurer of The Anna Kugler Bible Class. Adleen was an avid gardener, participating in the Roanoke County Garden Club. She was also a member of the Roanoke County Junior Women's Club. From 1940 to 1973 she was a member and, at times, officer of the National Ladies' Auxiliary of the National Association of Letter Carriers., Adleen's life was a testament to the importance of family, strength of character, faith, and service. She was a graceful lady - light hearted and deeply loving - who treated everyone with dignity and respect., In Charlottesville, Adleen is survived by her daughter, Connie Sisson Gilchrist; her grandsons, Robert James Gilchrist and his girlfriend, Alice Simpkins, and Michael Raymond Gilchrist and his fiance', Crystal Kotarski; and close friend, Suzanne Burch., She is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews., In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 1008 Franklin Road South West, Roanoke, VA 24016., Funeral services will be at 12 p.m. Saturday, December 11, 2010, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Roanoke. John BAKER

John was an active member of Northside Christian Church for more than 40 years. A former elder, he also served in many ministries, including the building committee following the fire which destroyed the church building in 1999.

John Baum

John A. Baum VIRGINIA BEACH - Former Councilman John A. Baum was born, raised and educated in his beloved Virginia Beach. He quietly walked his last mile from his native land Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2010. John was an agricultural engineer, receiving his degree from Virginia Tech after which he entered Naval Officers Candidate School at the end of World War II. He truly was a "farmer" and loved the land. Although he served both Virginia Beach and Chesapeake as an employee of USDA Soil and Conservation Service, he continued farming many acres of land in Virginia Beach where he made his home. This career experience gave him the great knowledge and appreciation for the soil, drainage and environment that inspired his to be the only subsurface (tile) drainage farmland in Virginia Beach. John was one of the first, if not the first, to install water control structures for water quality and crop production as well as land leveling for drainage enhancement. His farm was "the model" for crop production, water quality and wildlife management, (now known as "sustainability"), prompting many regional tours. John was later employed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from which he retired many years ago; however, his experience in this field prompted many to seek his advice and lean heavily upon his consultation. In 1990, he was named the "Man of the Year in Agriculture." He was a member of Blackwater Baptist Church; an outstanding Ruritan with more than 60 years of service, serving as president of the Creeds Ruritan Club in 1958. John was a very modest man, accepting great distinction with much humility and seldom spoke of his awards, honors or recognition of conservation leadership. Some of those are: recognition from Virginia Dare Soil and Water Conservation District; Buyers Committee for the Virginia Beach 4-H Livestock Show; Virginia Forestry Wildlife Awards; for many years he was the "Leader of Sustainability" for the number of pine trees planted by any one individual. He was elected to serve the Blackwater District on the Virginia Beach City Council in 1972 and served 28 faithful and dedicated years until the city's population redistricting eliminated the Blackwater District, effective July 1, 2000. He then served as a City Council appointee to the Virginia Beach Planning Commission and the City's Wetlands Board. For many years, he was a member of the Virginia Beach Farm Bureau Board of Directors and a member of their Resolutions Committee; a member of the Farmland Preservation Committee which developed the City's Agricultural Reserve Program to preserve farmland from residential and commercial development assisted by federal funding. His heart was in the community of farmers, but he never failed to respond to a need in any part of the city he loved. He promoted soil drainage and road improvements in the southern part of the city and was one of the few citizens present during the dedication of both the old and the new bridge crossing the North Landing River at Pungo Ferry Road. His roots were deep. He was self-educated as well as a professional. He was a family man, a respected citizen and will be remembered for his tenacity, knowledge, common sense approach, ability to manage more than one thing at a time and respond to every need. A funeral will be held in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, Friday Dec. 10, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in Blackwater Baptist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions made be made to Blackwater Baptist Church or the Blackwater Baptist Church Perpetual Care Fund, 6000 Blackwater Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23457. Online condolences may be made at www.hdoliver.com.

Virginia Pierce Beale KILL DEVIL HILLS - Virginia Pierce Beale, 87, went to be with her Lord Monday Dec. 6, 2010 in the home of her son. Mrs. Beale was born June 28, 1923 in Suffolk. She was the daughter of the late James Cephus and Bertha Morris Pierce. Also preceding Mrs. Beale in death was her husband, James Rawls Beale Sr., her sister, Beatrice McCotter and three brothers, Morris, John, and Raymond Pierce. Mrs. Beale was a longtime member of Great Fork Baptist Church in Whaleyville and was a retired bookkeeper from Farmer's Feed and Seed. Mrs. Beale is survived by her two sons, James (Jimmie) Rawls Beale Jr. and wife Carolyn of Kill Devil Hills, and Robert Lloyd Beale and wife Theresa of Windsor, Va. Also surviving are her pride and joy, four granddaughters, Michelle B. Johnson of Chesapeake, Heather B. Nobles of Kill Devil Hills, Kelly B. Johnson of Grandy, N.C., and Courtney B. Roggmann of Windsor; four grandsons-in-law, Dale Johnson, Taris Nobles, Paul Johnson, and Mike Roggmann. The ones that brought the biggest smile to her face were her great-grandchildren, Andrea, Kevin, Zion, and Trevor. She is also survived by two very special nieces, Doris Johnson (Tom) of Suffolk, and Mary Meador (Pete) of Midlothian, Va. The family extends their thanks to the director and staff of Spring Arbor Assisted Living for the special love and care given to mom; to the Community Home Health and Hospice team for the love and care given to us and to Pastor Tony Facenda of the Still Waters Baptist Church Family for his faithful visits and support given to our family. A thank you, also, to all of Virginia's faithful friends from Great Fork for their visits. Mom had a way of showing so much love to each of us and never complained about any disabilities she endured. She loved to read her Bible and Open Window everyday and was a strong believer in prayer. Her favorite verse was Phil.4:13, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthened me." A celebration of Virginia's life will be held Friday Dec. 10, at 11 a.m. in Great Fork Baptist Church in Suffolk. A visitation will be held in the church sanctuary one hour prior. Pastor Donald Jones and Dr. Jeff Crabtree will officiate. The interment and committal rites, by Pastor Tony Facenda, will follow immediately at the Great Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may gather in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial donations be sent to the Great Fork Baptist Church General Fund at 180 Great Fork Road Suffolk, VA 23438. Many thanks to Courtney Gallop of Gallop Funeral Services Inc. of Nags Head to whom local arrangements were entrusted and to R.W. Baker Funeral Home and Crematory, Suffolk.
