Jimmy Wayne Ball, age 63 of Richlands, Va., went home to be with the Lord on Sun., March 1, 2009 in a Winston-Salem, N.C., hospital. Born Jan. 7, 1946 in Richlands, Va., he was the son of the late Terry and Mattie Ball. He was a 1965 graduate of Richlands High School and was employed by Jewell Smokeless for 23 years. Jimmy was a woodcrafter and a devoted husband, father and grandfather. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Richard, Denny and Frankie Lewis Ball, and one sister, Dixie Brown. BELL, Ann Elizabeth Buck, of Richmond, passed away on Monday, March 9, 2009, at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital. She was an active choir member of various churches for many years and, more recently, was a member of Westhampton Baptist Church. After raising her children, she fulfilled a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse and worked at St. Mary's Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Julia Buck; and her brother, James T. Buck. She is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Lloyd Bell; son, Douglas and his wife, Cathy; daughter, Kathryn Ann Weeks; grandson, Ewan K. B. BEVILLE, Elizabeth, of Enon, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 8, 2009. "Libby" enjoyed a long and fruitful life and has left us all with many fond memories. She is survived by her husband, Charles William Beville; her sons, Charles William Beville Jr. and Richard Ninde Beville; and her daughter, Susan Patricia Huffman. Her loving family members include her grandchildren, Christopher Beville, Catherine Beville Pado, Heather Huffman Hobick, and Claudia Huffman Brennan; great-grandchildren, Langley, Blagen, and Keegan Pado, and Claire Hobick; and sister-in-law, Mary Frances Rainey. During her most recent years, Libby was well served by caregivers Lisa Pierce, Michelle Blackwell, Susan Mason, Shirley Hooks, and Carie Washington, for whom the family is truly grateful. Ms. Beville served as member and past President of the GFWC Junior Woman's Club of Hopewell, member of the Hopewell Woman's Club, many years as a volunteer for the American Red Cross at John Randolph Hospital, and member of the Wonder City Investment Club. She was a founding and charter member of Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church. The family will be receiving friends at the Bermuda Hundred United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2009, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. A reception in the fellowship hall of the church will immediately follow the service. Pearl McGlee Pugh Coffey Bradshaw, 89, died on Thursday, Feb. 26, 2009 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was born in Volney on July 6, 1919 to the late Steve and Rose Cornett Pugh and was preceded in death by her first husband, Dean Coffey, in 1964 and her second husband, Jim Bradshaw, in 1986, her brothers, and sisters, Gladys Parsons, Marie Parsons, Trixie Crockett, June Harrington Stanley Pugh, sisters-in-law, Margaret Pugh, Vada Pugh, Edie Pugh, brothers-in-law, Rob Parsons, Joe Parsons and Jim Cornett. She was also preceded in death by a special friend, Ellen Boatwright. She attended Oak Hill School in Mouth of Wilson. She came to Marion in the 1940s and worked for Burlington Mills as a seamstress for a number of years and then went to work for Dr. D.C. Boatwright and his partners until retirement in 1982. She was a member of the Marion Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary of Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. She was an avid reader, a championship bowler and loved knitting and crocheting. She was a very loving mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. Survivors include one son, Don C.V. Coffey of Marion; two granddaughters, Donna K. Coffey of Marion and Caroline Coffey of Cuba, N.Y.; great-grandchildren, Muhammad Abdullah, Emad Abdullah, Rifqa Abdullah, Cynthia; one brother, Joe Pugh of Hudson, Fla.; stepbrother, David Whisman of Louisville, Ky.; nieces and nephews, Jack Parsons, Polly Parsons, Jo Ann Parsons, Nancy Parsons, all of Grayson County, Joey Pugh of Jonesbourgh, Tenn., Roberts H. Harry P. DeAngelo Sr. MELBOURNE, Fla. - Retired U.S. Navy Chief Warrant Officer-4 Harry Paul DeAngelo Sr., 92, of Melbourne, passed away Friday, March 6, 2009. He lived in Florida since 1970 but resided most of his life in Virginia Beach. Born July 25, 1916, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Frank and Minerva DeAngelo. He served 23 years in the Navy as an officer. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II where he earned the Purple Heart for wounds received at the Battle of Okinawa. Harry received numerous awards including a Bronze Star with a combat "V" for Valor, 12 battle stars and two Presidential citations. He was most proud of his Good Conduct Medal he received at his retirement ceremony; Harry was one of the last of the World War II war heroes. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Anna Virginia DeAngelo; his daughter, Anne DeAngelo of Titusville, Fla.; his sons, Harry P. DeAngelo Jr., Steve C. DeAngelo (Sandra), Gary D. DeAngelo, all of Melbourne, Fla.; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was born Oct. 22, 1933 to the late Walter and Hazel (Johnson) Powers. Lyla graduated from Cleveland High School in Virginia, where she played on the basketball team. She had previously worked for Landmark Farm Bureau, Mac Honda and retired as a bookkeeper with McCune Cycle World. Her strong and admirable personal traits as a very private and meticulous person served her well throughout her life. She enjoyed her work and keeping busy with various activities. Delmar William "Bill" Heath, 67, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009 in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He was born in Maryland to the late Delmar Lee Heath and Mae Watson Heath and was preceded in death by an infant sister, Marjorie Mae Heath, and a brother-in-law, Robert Thomas. He was retired from the Southwestern State Hospital in Marion with 32 years of service. He was a very loving husband, father and papaw. He was a devoted caregiver to his mother during her illness and will be remembered as a kind, compassionate and giving neighbor to many people throughout Southwest Virginia. He was an avid fisherman, gardener and farmer. Survivors include loving wife of 46½ years, Carol R. Sandra Eley Hicks went home to be with her Lord on March 8, 2009. She was born on June 18, 1947, to Beatrice and Francis Eley and grew up in Dandy (York County), Va. with her brother Robert. She lived the last forty-two years of her life in Hopewell. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Hicks, and her mother and father. Sandy leaves to cherish her memory her brother and his wife Judy of Williamsburg, her uncle, Bob Crockett of Newport News, her aunt, Genevieve Drewery of Newport News, her nephew, Randy Hicks of Hopewell, several other nieces and nephews, several cousins and many friends. Sandy had a wonderful childhood and spent her days during the summer on the York River where she was known as the "soft crab queen." She graduated from York High School in 1965 and then went on to graduate from The Pan-American School in Richmond. She retired from Fort Lee after 35 years of service. For the past several years, Sandy attended Charity Baptist Church and would have done more to help but was limited by her many health problems. Although she had no children of her own, she loved babies and young children and never met one she didn't want or like. KELLEY, Elwood C., passed away Friday, March 6, 2009, after a battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Patty Kelley; his daughter, Brooke Kelley Conkle; his son-in-law, Daniel Conkle; his parents-in-law, Harold and Anne Quinley; his sisters-in-law, Betsy Quinley and Missy Bauder; his brother-in-law, Tom Bauder; his two nieces, Katherine Peck and Anne Claiborne Peck; and his three godchildren, Scott Bazemore, Chris Bazemore, and Jantz Bazemore Rollison. Born July 17, 1939, he was preceded in death by his father, Elwood Watson Kelley; his mother, Rosa Nuckols Kelley; his best friend, Harold Norwood "Kelly" Bazemore, and his cousin, Gerald Perks. A graduate of Rockville High School and Richmond Polytechnic Institute, he earned his master's degree in education from his beloved University of Virginia. Mr. Kelley devoted his life to educating children. After teaching for two years, Mr. Kelley became the principal of Montpelier Elementary School in 1964 at the tender age of 25. He served as principal of both Gandy Elementary and Elmont Elementary before becoming principal of South Anna Elementary in 1984, serving the rural community he loved so dearly. He retired from education in 1995 after 35 years of service. A lifelong lover of sports, Mr. Kelley coached numerous baseball teams and spent his retirement years following the University of Virginia's athletic teams. Mr. Kelley's family would like to thank his many friends for their support and comfort during his illness. He will be missed greatly. William Dempsey King NORFOLK - William Dempsey King, 99, of Suffolk, passed away March 9, 2009. A native of Barbourville, Ky., he was the son of the late Henry Frank King and Margaret Kellems King. He was also predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Elsie Marie Featherstone King. He retired as a locksmith for National City Bank in Louisville, Ky. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II and worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1933-35. Bill was a former member of Beechmont Baptist Church in Louisville where he served as a member of the Board of Deacons and a past Sunday school superintendent. He was a current member of Liberty Spring Christian Church and the Men's Bible class. LESKO, Mark E., 25, of Chester, Virginia, passed away on Sunday, March 8, 2009. He has now joined his grandparents, Edward and Valerie Polasko. Mark graduated from Thomas Dale High School in 2001 and continued his education at John Tyler Community College. He enjoyed flying with his brother, Bryan, and had begun the process of becoming an airline dispatcher. He was currently a general class amateur H.A.M. operator. Mark loved golf and music, and he was a wonderful cook. He participated in the Ukrop's Monument Avenue 10K as well. LUSK, I. Guy Sr., of Midlothian, widower of Barbara Jean Lusk, died Saturday, March 7, 2009. He is survived by his children, I. Brinkley Sunday school class, the Young at Hearts Senior Citizens Group, and had formerly been a member of the Gatesville Senior Citizens Club. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Blanchard G. Rountree and sisters, Janice Hobbs and Leona Price. SKINNER, Benjamin Jesse, 89, of West Point, Va., died on Sunday, March 8, 2009. He was born in Pitt County, N.C., to the late Benjamin and Leila Skinner. Ben was "a North Carolinian by birth and a Virginian by choice" who served in the Army Air Corps in both North Africa and Italy during World War II. During that time, he earned the rank of Staff Sergeant and was decorated with the EAMET Campaign Medal with six Bronze Service Stars and a Bronze Star Medal. He was the manager at Roses Department Store for 22 years before coming to West Point in 1962 and opening Point Variety. Ben was a strong believer in giving back to his community, always striving to help others in need. For 20 years, Ben served in the local government, including being chairman of the King William Board of Supervisors, President of the Virginia Association of Counties, member and chairman of the West Point Industrial Development Authority, member of the West Point Planning Commission and the Board of Zoning Appeals. Ben was active in numerous local organizations including the Kiwanis, where he served as a past president and received the Hixen award, the Pamunkey Regional Library Board, the VFW and the local Boy Scout Troop. He was a member of the West Point United Methodist Church where he served on several committees and was a Sunday school teacher. Ben was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Bet Skinner. He is survived by his daughter and her husband, Lee and David Bristow of Richmond; a son and his wife, David and Carmen Skinner of West Point; four grandsons, Matt and Justin Bristow, Evan and Neal Skinner; a nephew and his wife, Henry and Carol Skinner of Wilson, N.C. Charles J. Stiles, 56, of Rocky Mount, Va., died at home in the arms of his wife on March 5, 2009. Charles, known as Charlie to those who knew and loved him, could often be found in his garage ready to talk "racing." He had a passion for race car parts and building stock cars. Charlie leaves behind his wife and adoring fan Shirley, who has been blessed to have shared a life with him for 36 years; his eldest son, Joshua Stiles, who resides in Florida; his youngest son, Seth Stiles and daughter-in-law, Tara, and granddaughter, Saige who live in Las Vegas, Nev.; an adoring mother-in-law, (Ma) Barbara Fontaine, of Florida; and a brother and his wife, Bill and Marilyn Titone, in Connecticut. TOMPKINS, Virginia Beck, died March 8, 2009 at her home in Bon Air surrounded by her family. Ginny was born September 2, 1925 in Pittsburgh, Pa. She graduated from Chatham College in 1947. She is survived by her sister, Sylvia Morse of Pittsburgh, and her children Donald W. Beck of Hagerstown, Md., Gregg W. Beck and wife, Sarah, of Richmond, Gary J. Beck and wife, Jeanne, of Virginia Beach, Linda S. Beck and Shelly L. Clore of Richmond. Grandchildren, Emily V. Beck, Jessica L. Beck of Richmond, and Evan D. Denver Vance, age 46 of Tazewell, Va., died Sat., Feb. 21, 2009 at his home. Born July 2, 1962 at Buchanan County, Va., he was a son of the late Phillip and Mary Boyd Vance. He was a self proclaimed mountain man who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding four-wheelers. Mr. Vance was a man who loved motorcycles and fixing cars; with Denver, what you saw is what you got. He was of the Methodist faith. Denver will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, David Vance, Marvin Vance, Robert Vance, and his twin brother, Douglas Vance; one sister, Carmel Vance; one nephew, Mark Vance, who was a police officer with the Bristol Tennessee Police Department. Survivors include his wife, Wilma Vance; two sisters, Victoria Compton and husband, Raymond, of King George, Va., and Mary Lou Coleman and husband, Bennie, of Lynchburg, Va.; four brothers, Melvin Vance and wife, Mary Jane, of Mendota, Va., Daniel Vance of Federal Way, Wash., Phillip Vance, Jr. and wife, Diane, of Rowe, Va., and Ronnie Vance and wife, Esma, of Battleground, Wash.; one sister-in-law, Karen Vance of Harland, Ky.; several nieces and nephews; other loving family members and many friends. He was a lifelong resident of the Swords Creek, Va., area and was a Service Technician for Bucyrus America. He had worked for S&S Corporation, Ingersal Rand, and Long Airdox. He was a graduate of Honaker High School Class of 1972 and a graduate of SVCC Class of 1977. He was a member of the Fountain of Joy Church in Pounding Mill, Va., and loved to ride his motorcycle.
