Neel, Edith C.

Edith Cox Neel, 83, of Niceville, Fla., died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at her home. A memorial service was held Friday, Feb. 20, at 2 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Niceville, Fla. Born Edith Alva Cox in a small cabin deep in the mountains of Bland County on Aug. 17, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Grady Woolwine Cox and the late Cleta Thompson Cox. In 1942, after graduating from Ceres High School at the age of 16, she packed her meager belongings into a tiny suitcase and left her mountain home for good. In her pocket jingled every bit of her money: nine silver dollars and one $5 gold piece. Her grandfather had given her the money. She never spent those dollars which will be given to her beloved grandchildren. Instead, she enrolled in a job-training program at Pulaski Hospital, eventually becoming one of the first X-ray technicians in Virginia. Years later, while working at a hospital in Gastonia, N.C., she met and married Emmett R. White, M.D. Together they raised three children in Valdese, N.C. Later in life, she married her high school sweetheart, Herman R. Neel. They settled in rural North Carolina, near Mockville. There for more than a decade, she led a quiet life and indulged in several of her favorite hobbies which included reading, sewing and gardening. In 1993, she and Herman moved to Niceville, Fla., and Virginia. Blessed with a sharp wit and even sharper intellect, she had a passion for history and geography. She also delighted in baking, crocheting, embroidering, making her famous bread and enjoying the company of her children and grandchildren. She loved bird watching, hated squirrels and was a crack-shot with a .22 rifle. Survivors include a daughter, Beverly Byrne, and her husband, Pat, of Niceville, Fla.; a son, E. Royce White Jr., and his wife, Gina, of Niceville, Fla.; a daughter, Millie Rothrock, and husband, Neil, of Wytheville; five grandchildren, Patrick Byrne III, CPT/USA, currently serving his country in Iraq, Michael Byrne of Niceville, Fla., and Lizzie Rothrock of Wytheville; a niece, Brenda Queen of Maysville, N.C.; and three stepchildren in North Carolina, Jeff Neel, Cathy Bumgarner and Joe Neel. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1407 E. John Sims Parkway, Niceville, FL 32578; or Covenant Hospice, 101 Hart St., Niceville, FL 32578. National Cremation and Burial Society/Memory Park Cemetery in Milton, Fla., was in charge of the arrangements.

Newell, Kaleoppe Fern

Kaleoppe Fern Newell VIRGINIA BEACH - Kaleoppe Fern Newell passed away Feb. 14, 2009. "Dolly" to her family and friends will be remembered and greatly missed. Dolly was born Dec. 31, 1923, in Pennsylvania, and was the youngest of three children of Anthony and Laura Ketsules. The family moved to the sleepy resort town of Virginia Beach, where Anthony "Tony" who had emigrated from Greece, opened the Paramount Restaurant on the corner of 18th Street and Atlantic Avenue. The Ketsules family went on to own various businesses in Virginia Beach including a small motel. Virginia Beach was a Navy town, and of all of the sailors in town, Dolly chose Arthur Newell to be her husband Dec. 20, 1942. Arthur or "Doc" preceded her in death Feb. 15, 2000, and was buried at sea near Virginia Beach where he would remain close by Dolly in her later years. After World War II, along with work, Doc and Dolly enjoyed life and were the type of couple who could crash a party of strangers, and end up sitting at the table and having the most fun. In 1958, as family and friends were expanding their families, Dolly had her only child, Patrick. Life changed, and Dolly and her family finally settled in St. Joseph, Mich., and resided there for many years. Dolly worked as an administrative assistant for the Berrien County Court System for more than 25 years, where she trained many of her bosses. Dolly built lifelong friendships in Michigan while employed with Berrien County. Dolly returned to Virginia Beach in 2001, after her husband, Doc, passed away. She wanted to be with her sister, June Ellen (Jay) Noden. "Aunt Dolly" was welcomed home to Virginia Beach. Dolly was an active woman well into her 70s and then 80s. She was always "39 years old and holding," with attractive jewelry, make-up and clothing. Dolly was active in family events, joined a church family, and enjoyed the theatre and other local activities. Dolly was preceded in death by her brother, Theodore "Teddy" Ketsules, who resided in Florida. Dolly is survived by her Virginia Beach family; June Noden, and nieces and nephews, Patricia Noden, Thomas Noden, and James "Jimmy" Noden and his wife Maureen. A son, Patrick Newell and his wife Kathy reside in Grand Rapids, Mich. A celebration of Dolly's life will be held for family, friends and coworkers Saturday, March 7, in Virginia Beach Community Chapel. Instead of flowers, the family requests making a donation in Dolly's name to the charity of your choice. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Southside Chapel, handled the arrangements., Charities

Quade Jr., Joseph Russell

In Memory of my Son Joe "Joey" Quade Jr. May 3, 1964 - February 26, 1996 31years ago born in Maryland you entered our lives full of energy and gas, and love for life you rushed to embrace each new experience with joy and love. Moved to Virginia in 1981. Graduated from Green Run High School and how proud you made your family that night. 13 years ago, you left us and we still can't understand why. The empty space you left in our lives can never be filled. We miss you more than words can express and think of you daily, on holidays and birthdays. We can only mourn for a life so full of promise, that was cut so short. We take comfort in the fact you are up high in the mountains of your new home with God and noone can use or hurt you anymore. You were raised to tell the truth. In everything that has happened we do not blame God. With Love and Fond Memories, Mother Kitty Collins and Sisters, Charities

White Jr., Orvin N. (Memoriam)

In Loving Memory of Rev. Orvin N. Jr. WHITE 10th Anniversary in Heaven, January 21, 1946 you looked me in the eyes and said three little words, "I love you." March 4, 1999, you again looked me in the eyes and whispered those three little words, "I love you." I was holding you in my arms as I felt your spirit leave. I held on tight and said, I want to go too, but God whispered to me and said, "There's more work for you to do." God saw you getting tired. A cure was not to be. God put His arms around you and whispered, "Come with me." With tearful eyes we watched as we saw you fade away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, your tender hands at rest, God took you home to prove to us, He only takes the best., Forever in our hearts,, Laura Colleene R. White, and Family, Charities
