She graduated from Peabody Conservatory of Music in Baltimore. She received a masters degree in music from NYU and received her law degree from Temple University. She taught at Virginia Highlands Community College Equestrian Program and had volunteered with the Washington County Sheriff's Department. Survivors include one daughter, Carly A. Lipput, Pittsburgh, Penn.; one son, Alex D. Lipput, Pittsburgh, Penn.; brothers and sisters, Christine White, Orlando, Fla., Frank Bagnato, Pittsburgh, Penn., Robert Bagnato, Reno, Nev., Anthony Bagnato, Pittsburgh, Penn., James Bagnato, Denver, Colo.; and nieces and nephews. Donald Carter Erbe CORNWALL, N.Y. - Donald Carter Erbe, 82, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in Hampton. Born April 1, 1927, in Southington, Conn., he was the son of the late William J. and Louise (Caron) Erbe. Donald was raised in Southington until moving to Cornwall where he lived most of his life. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the U.S. Air Force. He was a brokerage clerk for Farnstock & Co., director of the Visitor Travel Center, USMA at West Point, and a consultant for World Wide Travel in New York where he led various skiing and hiking trips for the center. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, American Legion, Air Force Sergeants Association, the Appalachian and Adirondack Mountain clubs. Donald is survived by two brothers, Raymond Erbe and his wife Frances of Norfolk and William Erbe of Wolcott; a sister, Dorothy Morse of New Britain; six nieces and nephews, Allan Erbe of Virginia Beach, Mary Lou Sentell of Dice, Ky., Debra Glover and her husband William of Portland, Maine, Robert Morse Jr. of Meriden, Conn., Chris Trombly and her husband Gary of East Granby, Conn., Mark Morse and his wife Melissa of Watertown, Conn.; and several great-nieces and -nephews. He was predeceased by a twin brother, Douglas Erbe and a sister Geraldine Erbe. A funeral will be held Saturday at 10:15 a.m. from the DellaVecchia Funeral Home, 211 N. Gillespie Jr., Joseph Stras

Joseph Stras Gillespie Jr., 76, of Severna Park, Md., died on June 29, 2009 at home, from complications of Parkinson's Disease. He was born on Feb. 20, 1933 in Tazewell, Va. Mr. Gillespie graduated from Hampden-Sydney College and attended University of Virginia for Graduate School. He served as an aviator in the US Navy. Mr. Gillespie worked for the C & P Telephone Company and was a longtime Coach in Anne Arundel County. He coached for Junior Varsity Girl's Basketball, Girl's Softball and Boy's Baseball. He also coached AAU basketball and coached teams for the Greater Severna Park Athletic Association Green Hornets where he served on the board of directors. The GSPAA named a playing field for Mr. Gillespie at Kinder Park. He was a member of Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church in Severna Park. He enjoyed sports, the symphony, theatre, traveling and being with his family. Mr. Gillespie is survived by his wife Gale Branch Gillespie, a son James Selwyn Gillespie of Charlottesville, Va., and daughters Ellen G. Oakes and Emily G. Clement, both of Severna Park. He was also the grandfather of Dustin, Joe, and Elyse Purdy, Rachel, Rebecca, Olivia, and Gabe Clement, Ethnie, Will, and Sam Gillespie, and Jeannette, Austin and Trevor Oakes. Family and friends visited at Barranco & Sons, P.A. Severna Park Funeral Home on Wed., July 1, from 6-9 p.m. Memorial services were held at Woods Memorial Presbyterian Church on Thurs., July 2, at 1 p.m. Inurnment was in the Church Columbarium. Sherry Wininger Hawthorne, 57, of Rural Retreat died Friday, July 3, 2009. Funeral service was held Monday, July 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Revs. Tom Ballard and Don Stansell officiating. Interment was in West End Cemetery. She was born Dec. 3, 1951, in Kingsport, Tenn. Raised in Scott County, she was a graduate of Virginia Tech and North Carolina State University, holding a bachelor of arts degree and a master of arts degree in English. She was employed for nearly 15 years as an editor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Upon moving to Wythe County, she worked for several years under contract with Johns-Hopkins University Press editing scientific books for authors worldwide. She volunteered for many years for Wythe County Habitat for Humanity, United Way of Wythe County and the Wythe County Genealogical and Historical Assoc. She was a regular appointee to the Wythe County Planning Commission. An active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Wytheville, she taught children's Sunday school there for over a decade and was serving as chairman of the Missions Committee. She was preceded in death by her mother, Hester Hartgrove Wininger. Survivors include her husband of over 35 years, Alan Hawthorne of Rural Retreat; a beloved daughter, Susannah Hawthorne of Virginia Beach; father and stepmother, N.W. and Bea Wininger of Scott County; two sisters and brothers-in-law, twin sister Terry Wininger and Eddie Wininger of Scott County, Barbara and Chip Coalter of Lexington; four loving nieces, Cindy Moratto, Rebecca Starnes, April Wininger and Aaron Mazuelos; two grandnieces, Katie Starnes and Lindsay Starnes; many dear cousins, particularly Nancy Alley, Linda McGee, Jama Mason, Joy Chapman, Anita McClain and Michelle McDavid; and many dear members of her husband's family. Russell Everett Hicks Sr., 75, of Max Meadows died Wednesday, July 8, 2009, at his residence. Funeral service will be held Sunday, July 12, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Chapel with Jerry Keegan MTC officiating. Interment will be in West End Cemetery with American Legion Post 9 conducting graveside military rites. He was born Nov. 21, 1933, in Gilliam, W.Va., son of the late William Albert and Mamie Elizabeth Turman Hicks. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was retired from Hicks Custom Welding which he owned and operated for over 20 years. He attended the Pentecostal Holiness church. At the age of 16, he trained elephants with the Ringling Bros. Circus. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Madeline "Judy" Docey and Estelle Chandler; and six brothers, Paul Hicks, Eugene Hicks, Raymond Hicks, Hasful Hicks, Joseph Hicks and infant Freddie Lee Hicks. Survivors include his wife, Margaret Helen Hicks of the home; two daughters, Sharon Hicks and Melissa Marie Hicks, both of Max Meadows; a son and daughter-in-law, Russell E. II and Darlene Hicks of Max Meadows; a brother, Jimmie Edward Hicks of New Philadelphia, Ohio; four grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Joe Morgan Honaker, age 88, of Cedar Bluff, Va., passed away Sun., July 5, 2009 in a Richlands, Va., hospital. He was born in Buchanan County and was the son of the late Ezra and Maggie Looney Honaker. He had made his home in the Jewell Ridge and Cedar Bluff area all of his life and was a retired miner from the Richardson Coal Company. He was a member of the UMWA Local #7327 Jewell Valley, Va., and was an avid gardener and enjoyed working outside in his yard. He was a U.S. Army World War II veteran. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Honaker; three sisters, Trulie Surman, Dolly Clements, and Emma Payne; and one grandson, Barry Fletcher. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. Survivors are: two daughters: Helen Fletcher and husband, Fred, of Richlands, Va., Kathleen Craig and husband, Bill, of Roanoke, Va.; two grandchildren: Mike Baldwin and Kim Burks and husband, Nick; three great grandchildren: Maegan Brown and husband, Timmy, Joey Fletcher and Christi Burks; one granddaughter-in-law: Kathleen Fletcher; special companion, his loving dog: Peanut; several nieces and nephews also survive. John Douglas Tate, 24, died Tuesday, July 7, 2009, at his home on Danner Road, Max Meadows. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 11, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Wayne Monroe officiating. He persevered through 20 years of countless medical procedures for the treatment of spina bifida's debilitating effects. He endured this hardship only due to the special care provided by his mother. He was a member of Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church. He attended Fort Chiswell High School where he was active in JROTC and enjoyed his experiences in the automotive shop. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John C. Baker of Radford. Survivors include his mother, Sherry Tate; grandmothers, Fay McGhee and Gerlene Baker; two uncles, Beau Baker and Randy Semones; an aunt, Sheila Hamm; close friends, Robert and Rene Thompson, James and Sherry Fisher, Sonja and Richard Cregger; and numerous other extended family members. Born in Williamsburg, he was the son of the late William A. Sr. and Alma Walls Thompson. Bill was a graduate of James Blair High School, Williamsburg, and Virginia Tech where he earned a Professional Degree of Architecture. He was a founding partner of Thompson and Wright Architects Ltd., Chesapeake. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Constructions Specifications Institute, where he held positions in the local, state and national levels. He was also a member of the Virginia Board of Housing. Bill was a member of the Chesapeake Rotary Club, Friends of the Chesapeake Parks, the Masonic Lodge, and was a coach of several sports teams for the Chesapeake City Parks and Recreation. Other memberships include the Virginia Archeological Society where he held numerous positions including state president. He was actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America including numerous positions at the local, state and national levels. He was a member of James River Baptist Church, Williamsburg. Survivors include his loving wife of 46 years, Anna Katherine "Kitty" Thompson; a daughter, Huntley Thompson Kendall and husband David; a son, William A. Thompson III and wife Janis; grandchildren, Sadie, Scarlett and Tilly Mae Thompson and Peyton Crew Kendall; a brother, Charles F. Gaines Edward Webb, age 62 of Raven, Va., passed away Fri., July 3, 2009 at a local Richlands area hospital. He was born in Raven, Va., and was the son of Lucy Whitt Webb and the late Shannon Montague Webb. Gaines was a graduate from Richlands High School Class of 1966 and served in the U.S. Army and had worked for the Appalachian Electric Power Company as a lineman supervisor. He had lived in the Raven area most of his life other than the 20 years he lived in Huntington, W.Va., and he was a member of the American Legion. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Amber Marie Blankenship. Clyde Alex Witt, age 93 of the Witten Valley community of Tazewell, Va., died Wed., July 1, 2009 at Carilion Tazewell Community Hospital. Born May 21, 1916 at Pisgah, Va., he was a son of the late Charles C. Witt, Sr. and Josephine Boothe Witt. Mr. Witt was a retired coal miner having worked 36 years for Consolidated Coal Company at Bishop, Va. He was a member of the UMWA Local #6025 at Bishop, Va., where he received a 50-year membership pin. Mr. Witt was a faithful member of the Maxwell First Church of God, where he was distinguished as the oldest member, and had served as Chairman on the board of trustees for many years. He loved the beauty and serenity of the outdoors; being an avid outdoorsman he was a former member of the Tazewell County Sportsman's Club, and he loved to work in the garden. Of all that could be said about Mr. Witt, the cause of Christ and his family were his priorities and the joys of his life. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Stella Gray Witt; his eldest daughter, Frances Jane Rye "Lovejoy"; five brothers, Raymond Witt, Charles C. Witt, Jr., Albert Witt, J.W. "Denny" Witt, and P.D. "Buck" Witt; one sister, Viola Stillwell. Survivors include two daughters, Edith Stella "Edie" Keenon and husband, Rodney, and Lena Josephine "Jo" Jones and husband, Eli, all of Witten Valley, Va.; two grandchildren, Dr. Jennifer Ayn Jones of Blacksburg, Va., and Joseph Alex Jones and wife, Jennifer Rachael Labowitz-Jones, of Garnet Valley, Pa.; one great-granddaughter, Sophia Gray Jones; one sister, Mary Elizabeth Harrison of Salem, Va.; two sisters-in-law, Janice Witt of Baptist Valley, Va., and Edith J. Harold Roosevelt Yates Jr., 50, of Wytheville died Thursday, July 2, 2009. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, July 8, at 11 a.m. at the Grubb Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Mt. Mitchell United Methodist Church Cemetery. He was the son of the late Harold Roosevelt Yates Sr. and the late Caroline Ramsey Yates Hicks. Survivors include a daughter, Candy Yates of Tennessee; three sons, David Yates of Tennessee, Jamie Yates of Maryland and Wesley Coe of Wytheville; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Oma and Ozzy Osborne of Maryland, Alice Hart of Kentucky, Donna Albright of Woodstock, Eva and Tony Smith of Kentucky; a brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Tabitha Yates of Delaware; and many nieces and nephews. Grubb Funeral Home in Wytheville is in charge of the arrangements.

Lillian E. Zimmer VIRGINIA BEACH - Mrs. Lillian E. McAnnally-Zimmer, 87, died peacefully in her sleep July 11, 2009, after a long illness. She is survived by a son, two daughters, and four grandchildren. Services are private. Zwicker, Gertrude

, a luncheon was held for the family at the home of Cammie and her husband Chris Phillips. A special thanks to the Churchland Home staff for there care and kindness during Gertrude's stay. Gertrude's favorite saying was: "It's a good life, if you don't weaken." Gertrude was truly loved by her family and will be missed by many. May she rest in peace!
