Charles M. Chandler PARKSLEY - Charles Milton "Mickey" Chandler of Parksley, Va., passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, Va. His wife, Betty Rew Chandler, passed away May 27, 2009, after 62 years of marriage. Mr. Chandler was born Aug. 23, 1923, in Cashville, Va., and was the son of the late Liby T. Chandler and the late Missouri Franklin Marshall Chandler. He was an avid golfer and bowler and achieved two holes in one at the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church. Survivors include daughter, Randi Merritt and her husband Mickey of Franktown, Va.; daughter, Sandy Citro and her husband Lou of Greensboro, Md.; five grandchildren, Melissa Renee Landon, Rebecca Lane Merritt-Moses and husband Jason, Julie Marie Merritt, Joshua Caleb Landon and Emilee Nicole Citro; and a great-grandchild, Olivia Nicole Moses; and a sister, Gladys Marsh of Onancock. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased in death by a brother, Horace Chandler and a sister, Peggy Fosque. A funeral will be conducted Saturday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. from the graveside of Parksley Cemetery with the Rev. Romy Velassco officiating. John Charles Cherry VIRGINIA BEACH - John Charles "Charlie" Cherry, 78, passed away peacefully Monday, July 27, 2009. Born July 2, 1931, in Norfolk, the son of the late Viola Russell and James William Cherry Sr. He was predeceased by his stepbrother, Russell Price; brother, James Cherry Jr.; and sister, June Blessing. Charlie attended Maury High School. He served the Army National Guard, honorably discharged in 1964 as master sergeant, 29th Infantry Division Artillery. He was the owner of John Senter's TV in Virginia Beach until retiring in 2002. Charlie was a longtime member of the United Hunt Club in Southhampton County, active member of the Virginia Beach Shag Club, and formerly a member of the Tidewater Council, Boy Scouts of America, where he received his Vigil honor in the Order of the Arrow. He was a great man and his memory will be cherished by all. He is survived by his three loving children: sons, Craig and wife Marina, Timothy and wife Julie; daughter, Suzy Brophy and husband David; seven grandchildren; his sister, Peggy; and brother, Meredith and wife Sally. Robert James Chinault, 84, of Sutherland, died Wednesday, July 29, 2009, at Colonial Heights Health Care Center after fighting numerous illnesses. He was born in Caroline County on Dec. 27, 1924. Mr. Chinault was retired from the State Highway Department. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert S. and Julia M. Gray Chinault, both of Caroline County, and his beloved wife of 57 years, Ellen "Viola" Chinault; two brothers and four sisters. James was the oldest of 11 children. He is survived by two brothers and two sisters, Edith Wright and her husband James Calvin, Al Davis and his wife Shirley, Betty Bustamante and her husband Paz, and Carl Allen and his wife Dianna. Jack Conley VIRGINIA BEACH - Elmer Jackson "Jack" Conley, 71, passed away July 29, 2009, at Sentara Virginia Beach General. He was in the hospital for a week, after having surgery to repair a pinched nerve in his neck/spine. Jack fought a courageous battle when he developed complications that finally took his life. He was the proud owner of his own business, Conley Restoration. He enjoyed playing golf and horse racing and currently owned five racehorses that are stabled in Ohio. He placed his last bets on Tuesday, one to win and one to place. Jack was a "man's" man. Those who knew and loved him knew his grizzly bear stature concealed the heart of a teddy bear. His generosity and heart of gold as well as his love for family and friends will be forever missed but yet never forgotten. Left to cherish his memory are his dedicated and loving wife, Brenda Wright Conley; two sons, Mike Conley and Warren Conley, both of Marion, Ohio; two daughters, Jackie Creviston and husband Dave, Carolyn Conley and husband Swain Eller; five grandchildren: Leah, Lynde, Davey, Kain, and Nathan; two great-grandchildren, Jaedyn and Memphis; three brothers, Bennie, Warnie, and Chuck Conley; two sisters, Mae Brown and Judi Wirth; and sister-in-law, Debbie Grymes. CW4 U. S. Army Retired, Malcolm Harvey McDonald, 87, of Colonial Heights, passed away Wednesday, July 29, 2009. He was a native of Hibbing, Minn., and the son of the late John and Mabel Osgood McDonald. Mr. McDonald served in the U.S. Army during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, the Korean conflict, Vietnam War, and received many awards and medals. He retired as a civil service employee at Fort Lee. He was a member of the Colonial Heights American Legion Post 284 and the Association of Retired Military Personnel. Survivors include his wife, Nellie C. McDonald; three sons, Dan F. McDonald and wife Kathleen, Richard A. McDonald and wife Teresa, all of Richmond, John A. McDonald and wife Bonnie of Raleigh, N.C., and five grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Thursday, Aug. 20, 2009, at 1 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery with military honors. Reginald Louis Minnix CHESAPEAKE - Reginald Louis Minnix, 66, of the 3700 block of Cornick Ave., passed away July 29, 2009, in Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. A native of Roanoke, Va., he was the son of the late Nannie F. and John David Minnix Sr. and was predeceased by two sisters, Betty Jones and Dorothy Jones. He was the owner and operator of Wards Corner Barber Shop for 13 years. Learning to paint and barber from his father, he was a barber by trade for 50 years, but most important to him was his family which he always put first. Reggie is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Thornton and her husband Steve of Camden, N.C.; his son, R. Dean Minnix and wife Margie of Chesapeake; two brothers, Ralph David Minnix and wife Jeanette of Chesapeake and John David Minnix Jr. and wife Beverly of Bradenton, Fla.; two brother- in-laws, Harold Jones of Concord, Va., and Jimmy Jones of Lebanon, Va.; nine grandchildren, Ashley Brown and husband Jason, Samantha Minnix, Taylor Minnix, Steven Thornton Jr., Breanne Thornton, Joey Upson, Korena Upson, Jacob Upson and Keni Sellers; one great-granddaughter, Kaitlynn Brown; and a host of nieces and nephews. Mr. Jerry C. Phelps, of Colonial Heights, departed this life, Wednesday, July 29, at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center. He was born June 13, in Norfolk, Va., to Carolyn Griffin, of Suffolk, and Robert Phelps, of Norfolk. Jerry was educated in the Norfolk Public Schools, and after graduation, he attended Virginia State University, where he majored in engineering. He was employed as an operations manager with the Food Lion Distribution Center. Jerry was initiated into the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., through the Nu Psi Chapter and was #7 on the Spring 1988 Lineage. He was a faithful and dedicated member of the Mount Olivet Baptist Church, where he served faithfully on the Men's Usher Board and the Marriage Ministry. Besides his parents, he leaves to cherish his memories: a loving and devoted wife of 13 years, Lisa Phelps; a devoted and cherished son, Jared "Lil Jerry" Phelps; one sister, Karen January, of Norfolk; three brothers, Robert Brown, Kobie Barnard and Secorie Thomas, all of Norfolk; a grandmother, Lillian Franklin, of New York; a loving and devoted mother and father-in-law, Alvin and Carolyn Doyle; and a host of other relatives and friends, to include two devoted friends, Anthony Barnes and Byron Howell, and all of his co-workers at the Food Lion Distribution Center, and QVC. Turner and Elizabeth Garris Turner. He was also predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Annie G. Holland Turner. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II. Leland retired as owner and operator of Turner Electrical and Mechanical Contractors. He was a member of Wilroy Baptist Church for more than 50 years, a member of the Laymen's Sunday school class and served as a Deacon. He was a member of the Eastover Ruritans and the Suffolk Golf Association. He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Dianna T. Carroll (Ben) of Wakefield, Annette T. Yost (Billy) of Suffolk, and Sharon T. Stone (Joe) of Suffolk; a son and daughter- in-law, Leland Garris Turner Jr. (Nancy) of Suffolk; grandchildren, Rossie Carroll (Amy), Shannon T.
