NEWPORT NEWS - Alexander Gaines was born on July 15, 1922, and passed away Dec. 23, 2009, after a long illness., He served in the U.S. Army, retired from the Newport News Shipyard and was one of the founding members of Cornerstone Assembly of God., He is survived by his sister and caretaker, Lillie Adams of Newport News; his daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Dwight Coad of Freemont, Calif.; his daughter-in-law, Ruth Ida Gaines of North Carolina; his son, Joseph C. Townsell 'JD' of Folsom, Calif.; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives from Virginia, New York and California., A homegoing service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at Cornerstone Worship Center International, 55 Tide Mill Lane, Hampton, with Dr. Gerard H. Allene Peek Miles

MILES, Allene Peek, was born on December 27, 1916 in Atlanta, Ga. where she lived the majority of her life. She passed away on December 31, 2009 in Richmond, Va. She was active in her community and church, including 35 years of volunteer service to Crawford Long Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Ivan M. Miles; and their two sons, John and Bill. She is survived by their daughter, Mary M Potter of Richmond, Va.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Services will be held on January 4, at 11 a.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Chesterfield, Va. Barbara Jean Morris

MORRIS, Barbara Jean Brown, 77, passed away on Sunday, December 20, 2009, after complications from a colonoscopy. A feisty woman, with a zest for life, Barbara was known for her pizzazz and love for family. Much of her professional life was spent as an accounts payable supervisor for Best Products Company. After retirement, Barbara was constantly on "the go." She spent many days by the water or traveling with her sister and family. Extremely personable, Barbara never knew a stranger. She spoke to everyone and left a lasting impression with each person she met. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Joe T. Morris Sr.; daughter, Carla Jean Morris; and brother, James E. Brown. She is survived by three children, Cassandra "Sandy" Morris DeShazo (Joe); Joe "Cricket" Morris Jr. (Suzan) and Joan "Windie" Morris Lane (David); a devoted sister, Joan Guthrie; a brother, Kenneth Brown (Alycia); grandchildren, Joe "Tre" Morris III (Rachel), Adrianne Smith (Erik), Nicholle Anderson (Chris), Mathew DeShazo, Daniel Morris, Hamilton "Ackey" Lane, Alex Lane, Gary Shepler; eight great-grandchildren; niece, Carroll Slaymaker (Jerry); and nephew, Walter Guthrie. A memorial service celebrating Barbara's life will be held at Stukeley Hall Baptist Church, 601 Azalea Ave., on Saturday, January 23, 2010 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association or American Heart Fund. Barbara Ann Knisley BRISTOL, Tenn. Barbara Ann Knisley, age 73, passed away Jan. 1, 2010, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born Feb. 18, 1936, in Johnson City, Tenn., a daughter of the late Hugh and Nell Shell McMackin. She has lived in the Bristol area for the past 20 years and was a member of Whitley City Church of God. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William D. Knisley; and two brothers, Garry Lynn McMackin and Larry Hugh McMackin. Survivors include: daughters, Betsy A. Moore of Bristol, Suzie Turner of Ohio and Becky Knisley of Ohio; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Carolyn Blankenship; brother, Mike McMackin; several nieces and nephews. Jan 3, 2010 Bertie Harbour Bishop, 88, formerly of Bassett, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, at Blue Ridge Rehab in Martinsville, where she was a resident. She was born Dec. 18, 1921, in Patrick County to Causley and Nannie Bet Hopkins Harbour. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Henry Bishop; four sisters, Addie Morrison, Dovie Turner, Gertice Hughes and Geneva Horsley; and two brothers, Early and Harley Harbour. She retired from Bassett-Walker Knitting with more than 30 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bassett where she was a member of the Joy Group. Surviving are a daughter, Lillie B. Cassady of Bassett; two sons, Charles W. Bishop and Tony Bishop, both of Bassett; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Bassett with Pastor Lew Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Joseph Brown; children, Steven Brown and his wife, Beth, Mindy Stembridge and her husband, Vic; grandchildren, Daniel Stembridge, Brian Christianson and his wife, Raine, Rachel and Matthew Brown and Melanie Christianson; great-grandchildren, Stephanie Stembridge, Leah and Collin Christianson; sister, Sue Galumbeck and her husband, Henry; brother, Howard Kerpelman and his wife, Pat; sister-in-law, Margie Hyman and her husband, Robert; brother-in-law, Arnold Brown and his wife, Kim; numerous nieces, great-nieces, nephews and great- nephews. Bette did extensive volunteer work at Henrico Doctors Hospital-Forest Campus, Beth Sholom Home and Jewish Family Services, and was selected as JFS Volunteer of the Year in 2009. She worked side by side with her husband at their accounting firm, Joseph Brown Accounting and was a member of Beth El Sisterhood. Billie Jean Lea

LEA, Billie Jean Boggs, 79, of Flowood, Miss., beloved by many, passed away silently early on the evening of Sunday, December 27, 2009. She was laid to rest in Ridgeland, Miss. Pallbearers were her grandsons. Ms. Lea was voted Miss Byram High and Most Intelligent by her graduation class of 1948 and served as the editor of the school's yearbook. She went on to attend Mississippi College where she earned a degree in accounting. She worked as a bookkeeper, a nursing home administrator, an instructor at Hinds Community College, a volunteer accountant for AARP, and a short stint as the American Cancer Society's Dottie the Clown. Perhaps Billie's most crowning achievement was the beautiful life she built for the family so deeply saddened by her passing. She is survived by her children, Deborah Haick (Dr. Alexander Haick), Dr. Janis Fuller (Dr. Westwood Fuller), and John Lea (Mary); her grandchildren, Ellen, Ander, and Douglas Haick, Heidi Hoover (John), Alex Stein, Kevin Stein (Courtney), Eddie Fuller, Anne Fuller, Eric Bridges (Melanie), Dana Bridges, Melanie Lea, Allison Calhoun (Josh); six great-grandchildren, Isabelle and John Perdue Hoover, John Michael and Aiden Bridges, Caydence Stein, Landon Calhoun; her brother, Bennie Boggs (Mary); and sisters, Jackie Pahnka, and Becky Tustain (Pat). Blair Grant Roberts ABINGDON, Va. Blair Grant Roberts, age 98, passed away on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, in the Johnston Memorial Hospital. Mr. Roberts was born in Washington County, Va., son of the late John Adam Roberts and Ora Paxton Grant Roberts. He was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Bethel High School. He was a former employee of the Monroe Corporation and the oldest member of the Bethel Presbyterian Church. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Laura Rhea Roberts; three brothers, Bert, Clyde and Ernest Roberts. Survivors include one daughter, Ann Minton and husband, Jack of Abingdon, Va.; one nephew, John B. Roberts and wife, Peggy of Damascus, Va.; two nieces, Kay Stout and husband, D.L. of Abingdon, Va., and Peggy McPherson of Lowndesboro, Ala.; and numerous cousins and friends. Jan 3, 2010 The funeral for Carlene Preston Martin, 62, of 1010 Fayette St., Martinsville, who died Dec. 26, 2009, was held Saturday at Bethel United Way of the Cross Church in Danville with Bishop John A. Carrie Lee Evans, 56, died on Dec. 25, 2009. Carrie Lee was born and raised in Richmond, Va., She was the daughter of Mabel "Mickey" L. Evans and the late William R. Evans. In addition to her mother, Carrie Lee is survived by her sister, Patricia "Trisha" E. Goodwin, and her dear, loyal friend, Dan Small. She was a graduate of Longwood University and was an art teacher at A.P. Hill Elementary School. She began an affair with art at age 10 when she signed up for private lessons. By the time she was in high school she knew art was her passion and that one day she would teach children to love it. When she began teaching she gave her students choices and believed there is no right or wrong way-just make your work better. She tried to help students enjoy the subject and have enthusiasm for it., A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2010, at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road, Midlothian. Her remains will be cremated and there will be a private burial at Dale Memorial Park.

She was a graduate of Longwood University and was an art teacher at A.P. Hill Elementary School. She began an affair with art at age 10 when she signed up for private lessons. By the time she was in high school, she knew art was her passion and that one day she would teach children to love it. SURRY - Charles Branch Phelps, 86, of Surry, Va., passed away Dec. 31, 2009., Charles worked in many areas of the Peninsula, as a body shop manager, such as Buford Buick in Hampton, Nick Allen Buick in Newport News and then coming back to the Smithfield area at US 258 Parts and Body Shop. He opened Charlie's Body Shop in 1978, which is now owned by his daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Johnny Livesay, until retirement in February 2000., Charles was very active in the Backwood Bass in Smithfield and Peninsula Bass fishing clubs. He was also an avid hunter and was a member of the Surry and Beechland Hunt Club. Charles served as a past member of the Surry Volunteer Fire Department., Charles leaves behind a wife, three daughters, four grandsons, and three great-grandsons., Services will be private at the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Friends may join the family other times at the residence., In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Surry Volunteer Fire Department at P.O. Survivors: daughter, Tonya Barker and husband Chuck; son, Randy Turner; grandchildren, Josh and Brandon Barker, Megan Cullop, Amber Kadin, Israel and Christopher Turner and Amy Suiter; five great-grandchildren; special daughter, Dreama "Missy" Chapman and husband Don. She is survived by her devoted husband of 49 years, Jose R. She is also survived by her sister, Suzanne Wilson and her husband, David, and a brother, Stephen Drake and his wife, Nancy, and many nieces and nephews. Elaine attended Salem College, was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and The Junior League of Richmond, where she served as office administrator for 17 years. Jeanette was born in Richmond, Virginia to the late, David Cone Mays and Ethel Pearl Kerr Mays on May 9, 1932. She has been a resident of Baker County since 1972 after moving from Jacksonville, Fla. She was a member of the Terry Parker Baptist Church of Jacksonville and the First Christian Church of Macclenny. Jeanette enjoyed sewing, crafts, word puzzles, shopping, crocheting, needle point and serving other people by lending a helping hand. CUMMINGS, EUNICE E. (Jernigan), age 89, formerly of Richmond, of River Falls, Wisconsin, passed away Monday, December 28, 2009. Eunice was a very stylish woman who worked in retail clothing sales for many years at La Vogue of Richmond. Born and raised near Ahoskie, N.C., she moved to Virginia at a young age and found employment at the Federal Reserve Bank during WWII. She met her husband, John E. Cummings, shortly thereafter and they lived in Richmond until his death in 1998. She was preceded in death by husband, John; parents, Hattie and Ollie Jernigan; and siblings, Stanley, Garvis, Harvey, Eugene, Inez and Irene, of northeastern North Carolina. She is survived by her son, John E. Cummings Jr. of Richmond; daughter Patricia Cummings Rice (Jerome S.), of Prescott, Wis.; sister, Mary Sue Garris of Severn, N.C.; granddaughters, Lauren, Melyssa, Bethany and Allison Rice; great-granddaughter, Elspeth Dempsey-Rice; and many nieces and nephews, including Kay Edwards of Ahoskie. Eunice's love of family and friends was manifested by her charming southern hospitality. During her lifetime she adopted countless unwanted pets who now feel the loss of her. She was an avid supporter of many animal rescue groups and lived the philosophy herself. ARCHER, Dr. John Stanard Jr., of Richmond, Va., died December 28, 2009. Born May 25, 1917, to the late John Stanard Archer and Jeanette Baird Jacob Archer. Preceded in death by his wife, Helen Kirtley Archer and sister, Lloyd Archer Kanary. He is survived by six children, Glen Enochs and husband, James; Elizabeth O'Ferrall and husband, McLain; John Archer lll and wife, Len; Cynthia Montague and husband, Peter; Tad Archer; Fielding Archer and wife, Meredyth; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Stanard graduated from the University of Virginia, where he was a member of the Chi Phi fraternity, and the Medical College of Virginia, where he did his residency in otolaryngology. He was a former staff member of the Richmond Eye Ear Nose and Throat Hospital; volunteer physician at McGuire Veterans Hospital and the Virginia State Penitentiary. A World War ll veteran, he was an army captain in the 70th field hospital attached to the Flying Tigers. Stanard served on the Vestry at St. James's Episcopal Church, the board of the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities and as President of the Parents Council of the Virginia Military Institute. "Poppy," as he was known by his grandchildren, was a kind, wonderful and talented person who was loved by his family and friends and will be missed by all. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 5 at St. James's Episcopal Church. Jeffrey Glenn Medley MARION, Va. Jeffrey Glenn Medley, age 48, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. Jeffrey was born in Smyth County to the late Glenn S. Medley and Blanche Sullivan Medley and was preceded in death by a brother-in-law Jimmy Cook. He graduated from the Smyth County Training School and had been employed at Mount Rogers IDC. He had participated in the Smyth County Special Olympics for several years and had been awarded numerous medals. He was a member of the Chilhowie Baptist Church. He is survived by his brother and sisters, Wilma Cook, Marion, Va., Diana Medley, Wytheville, Va., David Medley and wife Martha, Sugar Grove, Va.; nieces and nephews, Joey Cook and wife Beth, Cindy Cook, Sheri Shelton and husband Les, Missy Medley; two great nieces and one great nephew, Sierra Garzon, Amy Cook, William Medley; special friend, John Hayden. Jesse Thomas Adams BRISTOL, Va. Jesse Thomas Adams, age 85, went to see God on Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at his home. He was born Aug. 4, 1924, in Ponca, Neb., a son of the late Clarence Leroy and Mary Francis (Fitzgerald) Adams. He was an altar boy for Father Flanagan (before he established Boy's Town Home in Nebraska.) He was a World War II veteran with the U.S. Navy. Jesse worked for the Sioux City Stockyard. He was a union representative for the employees and set up the union pension program. He trained in Waterloo, Iowa and became a USDA Government Meat Inspector. He traveled to Newark, N.J., to process and inspect the Kosher Meat Plant. He transferred to Bristol as his home base but still traveled to New York, Virginia and Tennessee. He worked for the government as an inspector at Valleydale, Armour and Joe Range's and retired in January 1987. Through the years in Bristol he owned Hill Country Trailer Park and "The Donut Shop". Jesse graduated in Ponca, Neb., and from the USDA School in Iowa and he was a member of the American Legion. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jean Pflughoeft; second wife, Mary B. Adams; children, Kathryn M. Adams, Mary Margaret Adams and Caroline Buchanan; brothers, Pat, Donald and Clarence Adams; and sister, Rita Myers. Survivors include: children, Patricia A. Adams of Milford, IA; Michael L. Adams and wife Debra of Bristol Tennessee; Belinda S. McCracken and husband Danny Ray of Bristol Virginia; Thomas W. Adams; Margaret M. Judge MacKenzie, a Portsmouth native, was the son of the late Henry William and Clara Maupin Ashton MacKenzie., A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Judge MacKenzie received his undergraduate and law degrees from Washington and Lee University, where he was president of Kappa Alpha fraternity. He then served as an officer in the Coast Guard during World War II., While practicing law in Portsmouth, he was appointed assistant judge in Portsmouth Police Court, then was elected to the State Legislature of Virginia, where he served from 1954-1958. He was president of the Portsmouth Assembly from 1950-1955., Judge MacKenzie was appointed to the United States District Court in 1967, where he served until he retired in 1997. During his service in the U.S. District Court, he was elected president of the District Court Judges Association, Eastern Virginia, Fourth Circuit in 1978; Chief Judge, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia 1980-1986; Federal Jury Committee 1972-1980; Eastern Virginia Chairman, Council of Boy Scouts 1972-1973; president of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce in 1967; and First Citizen of Portsmouth in 1968. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry, as Senior Warden and as a trustee. He was also a member of the American Bar Association, the Rotary Club and the Pyramid Club., He was preceded in death by his sisters, Martha M. Clark and Clara M. John Ashton MacKenzie

MacKENZIE, The Honorable John Ashton, 92, died January 1, 2010. Judge MacKenzie, a Portsmouth native, was the son of the late, Henry William and Clara Maupin Ashton MacKenzie. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Judge MacKenzie received his undergraduate and law degrees from Washington and Lee University, where he was president of Kappa Alpha fraternity. During his service in the U.S. District Court, he was elected president of the District Court Judges Association, Eastern Virginia, Fourth Circuit in 1978, Chief Judge, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia 1980-1986, Federal Jury Committee 1972-1980, Eastern Virginia Chairman, Council of Boy Scouts 1972-1973, president of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce in 1967 and First Citizen of Portsmouth in 1968. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry, Senior Warden and as a trustee. He was also a member of the American Bar Association, the Rotary Club and the Pyramid Club. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Martha M. Clark and Clara M. Jernigan; and his brother, Judge Henry W. MacKenzie. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth Nash MacKenzie; his sister, Theodosia M. Adair; as well as his daughter, Elizabeth N. Hudgins and husband, Michael H. Pitt; his son, Henry C. Hudgins and wife, Candace Hudgins, and former wife, Maria B. Hudgins; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, seven nieces and a nephew. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 6, at Trinity Episcopal Church. John M. Fleming BRISTOL, Tenn. John M. Fleming, 91, died early Saturday morning, Jan. 2, 2010, in Bristol Regional Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Anne, whom he mar ried in October of 2004; two daughters, Ann Carter McLendon, and husband Eugene of Atlanta, Ga., and Gwen Scaff, and husband Fred of Columbus, Miss.; three granddaughters and six great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Jan Patrick, and husband, Roger of Bristol Tennessee, Henry Preston King IV and wife Sharon of Harrison, Tenn.; four step-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; and a brother, Lindell C. Fleming of Colorado. John was married to the former Gwendolyn Phillips of Cambridge, Md., who had served as a Tennessee state representative. She passed away in January of 2002. He was born in Upland, Ind., on July 10, 1918, to Oris and Mildred Tomlinson Fleming. The family relocated that same year to Washington, D.C. where he resided for 20 years. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, Southeastern University and attended George Washington University. He was associated with the Bendix Corporation in two divisions, Bendix Radio and Friez Instruments in Baltimore prior to and after serving in World War II. After the war, he was also associated with Universal Molded Products in Bristol as vice president of manufacturing and with Sperry Corp. and Univac in Bristol and in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, retiring as plant controller. He served in World War II as a combat infantryman in the 84th Division in Europe and retired from the Army Reserve as a major. He was a life member of the VFW, a member of the 84th Infantry Division Society, and the Retired Officers Association. In Bristol, he was past president of the Country Club of Bristol and the Bristol Host Lion's Club. He was a vestryman, senior warden and lay reader of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, past chairman of SCORE, and a former member of Bristol Industrial Development Board. BELCOLORE, Louis R., age 60, of Newtown, Conn., died December 7, 2009 in Danbury, Conn. He was the husband of Jeannette (Barressi) Belcolore. He was born on September 18, 1949 in Queens, N.Y., a son of the late Louis P. and Margaret (Bodnovich) Belcolore. Lou served in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1970 to 1972. He was employed by IBM from 1968 to 1998 and by Altria from 1999 to 2007. Mr. Belcolore resided in Wappingers Falls, N.Y. from 1979 to 2003 and in Richmond, Va. from 2003 to 2007, when he moved to Newtown. In addition to his wife of 37 years, Lou is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Belcolore-Arguello and her husband, Raul, and Lisa Merrill and her husband, Kevin; and four grandchildren, Isabella Mia Arguello, Gabriella Sofia Arguello, Antonio Arguello and Benjamin Merrill. Rev. Alfred Huston Moore, 84, of Roanoke, passed away peacefully in his sleep early December 31, 2009. After a long and hard battle in his later years, he finished the course and has "received the crown laid up for him". He is now experiencing what he loved to quote from John Chapter 14: "In my Father's house are many mansions, I go to prepare a place for you and if I go away I will come again and receive you unto myself that where I am there you may be also....", Alfred Huston Moore was born February 21, 1925 in Salem, Va. and grew up in Floyd County, Va. He is the son of Jacob Moore and Emma Sweeney Moore. In 1943 1945, he served his nation with the US Navy in Hawaii and the Marshall Islands during the Second World War. After discharge, he indulged his love of adventure by hitchhiking to Texas and back and working on the James River Fleet in Newport News., In June, 1949 he married Lois Bayse of Salem, Va. and answered God's call to the ministry. After graduation from Allentown Bible Institute in Allentown, Pa., his first pastorate was Christo Pilgrim Holiness Church on Bent Mountain, Va. He also pastored in Christiansburg, Va., Boissevain, Va., and Five Forks Wesleyan Church in Stuart, Va. In addition, he filled many pulpits around southwest VA as a supply pastor. He had a secondary career as a painter at the Salem VA Medical Center and retired in 1987. He loved woodworking and created many beautiful pieces of furniture for himself and his family., He is survived by two brothers, Edward Moore, of Virginia Beach, Va. and Jack Moore, of Mocksville, N.C.; also, his children and their spouses, Glen and Fran Moore, of Greensboro, N.C., Ronald and Ruth Moore Wilson, of Stuart, Va., Mary Moore Mabe, of Roanoke, Va., James and Roberta Moore, of Kansas City, Mo., Ronnie and Karen Moore Gregory, of Stuart, Va., Raymond and Debbie Moore Laffoon, of Suffolk, Va., Micah and Margaret Ann Moore Travis, of Indianapolis, Ind., John Moore, of Indianapolis, Ind. and Randy and Sandra Moore Bandy, of Bedford, Va. Lois, his wife and partner of 55 years, preceded him in death in 2005 and his daughter, Lois Juanita Moore Owens, in 1972. Pat Christensen, 80, died on Thursday, December 17, 2009, at The Laurels of Charlottesville, while recovering from a brief illness., She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, in May, 1929 to the late Whitney Gordon Leighty and Edna Coder Leighty. Her family moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where she was raised on the banks of the Mississippi River and started her lifetime love of the water., After she married, she moved to Skaneateles, New York, where she worked for the Skaneateles school system and was a charter member of the Skaneateles Ambulance Corp for 12 years. After her marriage ended, her beloved mother-in-law, Helen Christensen, offered help if Pat wanted to leave the snows of New York to move to Dallas, Texas, which she did in 1981., Years later, after the death of her mother-in-law and the failure of multiple savings and loan companies she worked for, she moved to Charlottesville, Virginia. She had fallen in love with Virginia when she visited from drab, winter ravished New York State at Easter and the gardens were in bloom and beautiful., Pat lived in Charlottesville since 1989, with both appearance and activity level defying her age. She spent hours at the Senior Center, MedFit, ACAC, and in local classes on an interesting variety of topics. Pat travelled at every opportunity, with trips ranging from international vacations to multiple visits to Williamsburg, Virginia, every year. Pat's true passion was being a volunteer at the University of Virginia Medical Center where she started in the Cancer Center in 1992, moved to the Hospice and Palliative Care Unit for nine years and then returned to her first love, the Cancer Center. Born to Bruce and Constance Eaton in Buffalo, N.Y., he was the third of four children. He frequently and fondly reminded us that his twin brother, Charles, was the older one., He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Bruce Eaton, and survived by his twin, Charles Eaton of Lebanon, Ind., and his sister, Martha Diebold of Lyme, N.H., Ron entered the U.S. Navy at age 19 years. He completed Nuclear Power School and Submarine school, then served on nuclear submarines for almost 16 years. After an interview with Adm. Hyman Rickover, he was assigned to the newly commissioned aircraft carrier U.S.S. Nimitz and retired after 20 years of service to his country. Ron then went on to work for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission in Washington D.C., where he was awarded the NRC Meritorious Service Award for Project Manager Excellence in 1995. He retired from the NRC after 18 years of federal service. He went on to work for 12 years at H & P Inc.; a firm started by great Navy friends. Semi-retired for the past few years, he had become more active in his church and American Legion Post 83 in Mathews., Having owned numerous British sports cars throughout his life and being an avid MG fan, Ron, Rosemary, his sons and grandsons, were active in several sports car organizations notably the MGT Register and NAMGAR and enjoyed gathering and traveling with their many MG friends., Ron's legacy continues to live on in others through his Gift of Life of organ donation., Visitation will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday Jan. 2, 2010, at Foster-Faulkner Funeral Home, Main St., Mathews. Slusher Sr., James Edwin

In Jim's early years, in conjunction with his high school training, he learned to rebuild Franklin and Piper Cub airplanes and with this passion, he eventually learned to fly them, leading to the years where he was able to serve his country in the United States Army Air Corps in the Air Training Command, San Antonio Texas. For many years, Jim and his wife were members of The Carolina Swingers Club, where they so enjoyed square dancing with their many friends and Jim learned to "call" the dances. He was a very friendly man who never met a stranger and could always bring a smile to faces, both young and old. Always "upbeat", he had a wonderful sense of humor which served him well throughout the years and got him through a lot of good times, as well as bad. JONES, Stevens Meredith died Thursday, December 31, 2009. He was born August 27, 1932 in Richmond to Dorothea A. and Leonard A. Jones, and is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sarah Hastings Jones. He is also survived by three children, Stevens M. Jones Jr., Sarah Jane Wyatt (Russell) and Scott Hastings Jones (Juli); and eight grandchildren, Emily, Harrison and Caroline Jones, Benjamin and Andrew Wyatt and Olivia, Spencer and Carter Jones. He was a 1955 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Architecture, where he was a member of Chi Phi and Alpha Rho Chi, and he attended graduate school at the University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University. After serving in the U.S. Army Combat Engineers, he returned to Richmond and later became a partner in the firms Marcellus Wright and Partners and Jones and Strange-Boston. He won at least two national architectural design awards, one at Ft. Meade, Md. and another for Langley AFB Hospital. He was a member of Prison Fellowship and served for over 20 years at Goochland and Sussex I Prisons. Steve loved the Lord with every fiber of his being. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 6, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 8787 River Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229. Interment will be private. Jan 3, 2010 The funeral for Sylvia Caldwell Gilley, 65, of Bassett, who died Dec. 29, 2009, was held Saturday at Norris Funeral Services Chapel with the Rev. Charles Waller officiating. Entombment was in Roselawn Abbey. Pallbearers were Michael Hunt, Darel Holt, Jerry Mize, Tony Hazelwood, Steve Bevers and David Easter.


 


 

Taylor R. Copping Sr.

COPPING, Taylor R. Sr., passed away peacefully on December 12, 2009 amidst the loving care of family and hospice support members at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital. Taylor proudly served in the Army Air Corps, received his Master of Science at the University of Richmond, and later served as Executive Director of the American Lung Association in New Mexico and in Virginia. He was an avid golfer and an accomplished guitarist. Taylor is survived by his devoted wife, three children, three grandchildren, and two sons-in-law. Services are private. FAULCONER, Thelma Lorraine, 81, of Mechanicsville, went home to be with her Lord on Thursday, December 31, 2009. She is survived by three daughters/spouses, Dianne Faulconer, Wendy and Chuck Bowles, Faye and Jimmy Archer; one foster daughter, Kathy Short; six grandchildren, Robin Custalow, Kim Smith, Jason Bowles, Tommy Lloyd, Nichole Lloyd, and Landon Lloyd; seven great-grandchildren, Raleigh Custalow, Lili Custalow, Stuart Smith, Tyler Smith, Kaitlyn Smith, Isaac Bowles, and Ryan Bowles. Lorraine was a loving and caring woman who gave so many wonderful memories to her family and is cherished for being such a special mom. Her love for animals was well known, along with her tireless efforts to care for homeless animals. She operated her own Kennel/Clipping Parlor for years. A graveside memorial service will be held Monday, January 4, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Signal Hill Memorial Park with Rev. James Bennett officiating. Tom McKNIGHT

MCKNIGHT, Tom, though he passed away in Richmond on December 20, Tom was a true New Yorker at heart. After graduation from Fordham, Tom joined the Marine Corps, serving in Vietnam as an H-34 helicopter pilot. After his discharge, Tom worked for Pfizer for 34 years and served in the Marine Corps Reserves flying H-46's and H-53's, retiring as Colonel. Tom was a true renaissance man: A voracious reader, and passionate about the arts, politics, history, geography, carpentry, inventing, gardening, cooking, oil painting, and restoring old Jaguars. He was a dancing fool, and loved a good party and conversation. As Scout Master, he was so proud that 10 of his cubs went on to become Eagle Scouts. Tom was a proud papa, husband, son and brother. He leaves behind his wife, Carol; and their fantastic kids, Lauren, Emily and Guyon; and daughter-in-law Kim. He loved his mother, Olga Schern; his brothers, Roger and Howard; his sister-in-law, Rosemary; and his nieces, Krissy, Claudia and Christine. A Memorial Mass will be said for Tom at St. Edward's Catholic Church at 12, Saturday, January 9, 2009 with casual dress. Interment will be at Quantico National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Boy Scouts.

Marian Phillips Wilson Marian Phillips Wilson, 100, of Goode, died Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at Bedford Memorial Hospital. She was born in Bedford County July 22, 1909, a daughter of the late James Van Phillips and Blanche Hunter Phillips. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Lenwood Wilson; three sisters, Virgie Owen, Lucille Abbott, Helen Hendrix; six brothers, Odell Phillips, Earl Phillips, Marshall Phillips, Maurice Phillips, Raymond Phillips and Garland Phillips. Marian is survived by her son, Glenn Wilson and his wife, Charlotte, of Goode; her daughter, Faye Blankenship and her husband, Frank, of Goode; her grand daughter, Kristie Newcomb and husband, David, of Goode; and grandson, Mark Blankenship and wife, Stephanie, also of Goode; great-grand children, Spencer Newcomb, Hailee Blankenship, Morgan Blankenship and Marshall Blankenship; numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Zemar Morgan BRISTOL, Tenn. Zemar Morgan, age 92, passed away Dec. 31, 2009, at the Cambridge House. He was born Sept. 12, 1917, in Cincinnati, Ohio, a son of the late Grover and Zella Smith Morgan.
