REGER, Anthony Bernard, 96, of Henrico, passed away January 4, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine H. Reger. He will be remembered for his contentment of life, keen sense of humor and dedication to a yard full of flowers. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Navy and the then newly formed "Sea Bees." He was retired from Merita Bakery. He is survived by two sons, Gerald F. Reger "Jerry" of Kingsland, Texas, and Anthony H. Bonnie Joy Snodgrass Gilmer BRISTOL, Va. Bonnie Joy Snodgrass Gilmer, passed away at the age of 83, on Dec. 26, 2009. She is survived by her children, Gwen Wilcox and her husband, Douglas Wilcox of Eaton, Colo., Tyler Gilmer of Bonita Springs, Fla., and Wendy Gilmer of Wytheville, Va.; six wonderful grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She is also missed by her brother-in-law and his wife, Turner Ashby and Mary Gilmer of Castlewood, Va.; her sister-in-law and her husband, Ellen and Ben E. Ames of Suffolk, Va.; as well as nine nieces and nephews and their families. Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, James "Jim" Browning Gilmer; her parents, Tyler Frazier and Golden Rodman Snodgrass of Bristol Virginia; a brother, Elbert Snodgrass; a sister and brother-in-law, Dixie Lee and Charles Lerro of Bristol Virginia; a brother and sister-in-law, Don and Rosemary Snodgrass of Denver, Colo.; and a grandson, James Russell Van Patten of Cheyenne, Wyo. Bonnie was born in Denver, and grew up in Colo., Calif., and Russell County, Va. When her father retired from farming, Bonnie moved with her parents to Bristol. Later, she returned to Lebanon in Russell County with her husband, Jim to raise their family. In addition to being a devoted wife and mother, Bonnie taught private kindergarten in her home in Lebanon for several years and actively served her church in many capacities throughout her life. After Jim's retirement, he and Bonnie divided their time between homes in Bristol and Englewood, Fla., where Bonnie took up golf, enjoyed entertaining friends, and sang in a community choir. A memorial service is planned for a later date. |

ROBISON, Carl Francis, born May 27, 1908 in Watertown, N.Y., Died January 2, 2010. He was a devout Catholic and member of St. Bridget's Church. He was a loyal and faithful Hokie; a football star during 1932 to 1934 as a lineman and a fullback. He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty-five years, Madeline Elmore Robison; his brothers, John, Arthur, Joe, Donald; sister, Mildred; and sister-in-law, Connie. Robbie graduated from Dean Academy and V.P.I. He was one of the founders of The Officers Club, now the Westwood Club, and a lifetime member of The Knights of Columbus, Y.M.C.A., Bull and Bear Club, Navy Memorial Foundation and Golden Hokie. Robbie was the oldest living Hokie football player and honorable mention All American in 1933. As a Lt. Commander in the Navy during WWII, he was highly decorated receiving the Navy Cross during the invasion of Sicily. He commanded twelve LCI I landing crafts and gunboats. His main regret was not getting his twelve LCI G gunboats to Iwo-Jimia because of another battle. He retired from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Mary Madelyn Robison Tucker and her husband, Beverley Randolph Tucker III; his granddaughter, Madelyn Tucker Smith and her husband, Andrew Ira Smith; two great-grandchildren, Tucker Woodward Smith and Madeleine Hannah Smith. He was a member of Otterville United Methodist Church and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Bedford Elks Lodge #2844 and an honorary member of the Bedford Moose Lodge #1897. APPLE, David Bryan, 40, of Chesterfield County, departed this life far too soon as a result of a tragic accident on January 1, 2010. He was born September 9, 1969 in Richmond, Va. David is survived by two children, Cari K. Apple, age 22, and Bryan T. Apple, age 15, both of Richmond, Va; grandson, Lucas S. Adams; his mother and father, Barbara J. Apple and Hubert Apple Jr.; two brothers, Darren W. Apple and Daniel R. Apple; sister-in-law, Sandra S. Apple; and his girlfriend, Joyce Rivers; niece, Jennifer Apple - Hinton; and nephew, Christian Apple. David was a graduate of Meadowbrook High School (Class of '89) and attended Emmanuel College. David was the Eastern Regional Sales Manager for Miller Edge Corp. of West Grove, Pa. and had worked previously as Sales Manager for his family's business, Apple Door Systems, Inc. David treasured his children, his family, his girlfriend and his strong Christian faith. David had a wonderful sense of humor and made people laugh wherever he went. He was an avid Dallas Cowboys fan and always rooted for UVA. David was a talented musician and played the trumpet, drums and guitar. In his job, he always sought innovative ways to market his products and build long- term relationships. He was loved dearly by his family and friends and his loss will be felt for a very long time. Born Jan. 7, 1957, in Russell County, the son of Clyde and Edna Helton Ferguson. Mr. Ferguson was a disabled employee of the Town of Lebanon, and was a member of the Lebanon Church of Christ. Retired Col. Edward L. Phillips of Virginia Beach, born in 1930 in Richmond, Va., passed away Dec. 30, 2009., He was predeceased by hiswife, Patricia Ann Phillips, and a son, Edward L. Phillips II., He is survived by his devoted sisters, Catherine Phillips Romaine and Loretta Phillips Small, and his sister-in-law, Joan Wharton Phillips., He is survived by a large extended family that includes daughters, Catherine Phillips Outlaw, Theresa Phillips Foster, Susan Phillips Sarrett and her husband, Davis T. Sarrett, and Mary Anne Phillips Flannagan and her husband, Mark R. Flannagan. He is also survived by sons, Stephen W. Phillips and his wife, Gwen F. Phillips, and Mark Wharton Phillips and his wife, Nancy N. Phillips., He has 14 grandchildren: Kevin B. Hardy, Timothy W. Garrett, Kellie H. Brekke, S. Paige Phillips, Kerry P. Flannagan, Pete Flannagan, M. Bryant Phillips, Amelia A. Phillips, E.L. "Trey" Phillips III, Victoria L. Merritt, Kathleen M. Johnson, David P. Sarrett, Jordan T. He enlisted in the Army and attended Officer Candidate School in 1953. He had a long and distinguished military career achieving the rank of colonel. He earned numerous awards for valor and service and served his country with honor. He participated in six campaigns in Korea and four campaigns in South Vietnam. During his 28 years of commissioned service he served in Command of the 303rd Maint Bn, 79th Maintenance Bn, and as the Discom Commander of the 24th Infantry Division. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal with V device and Oak Leaf Cluster, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Unit Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster, Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation, the Republic of Viet Nam Armed Forces Honor Medal (1st Class), and the Republic of Viet Nam, Gallantry Cross Unit Citation., During his military career he remained a devoted and caring father to his extended family., The family would like to extend their thanks to the Virginia Beach Hospice Program, specifically Linda, Maggie and Dr. Patterson, with additional thanks to caregiver Joyce for all of their support and kindness., A funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 9, 2010, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, with the Rev. Richard Todd Falls, 48, of Fincastle, and formerly of Zuni, Va., passed peacefully from this life on Saturday, January 2, 2010, with his family by his side. Rick was born on May 9, 1961, in Roanoke, Va. He was a member of Woodland United Methodist Church in Windsor, Va., and most recently attended Fincastle United Methodist. Upon retiring from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, where he was employed for 28 years, he and his family returned to Botetourt County. He was preceded in death by his father, Stephen Todd Falls. He is survived by his wife, Paige Fisher Falls; his daughters, Hope Alexandra Falls and Savannah Kate Falls; his mother, Clara Peery Falls; his sister, Kimberly Falls Quinn; and niece, Shelby Ann Quinn. He is also survived by his paternal grandmother, Dorothy Boblett Falls; his father-in-law and mother-inlaw, Duane and Carolyn Fisher; and his sister-in-law and her husband, Claire and Ernie Ferguson. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins who loved him very much. Rick was an avid fisherman obtaining many Virginia freshwater and saltwater citations and is now fishing the blue waters of heaven. Rick fought his battle with ALS courageously and when he could no longer actively participate, his greatest delight was watching his two precious daughters. Rick was full of laughter and brought joy to the many who were lucky to know him. He had many fond memories of his old fishing and coaching buddies and delighted in being at the ball field with his new buddies. The family would like to give a special thank you to the ALS Association, special friends Connie and Teresa Davis, Dr. Clarke Andrews, Gentle Shepherd Hospice, and special nurse and cousin, Regina Cox Bailey. John Maurice Fitzgerald, 82, who retired in 1983 as a lineman and foreman for C&P Telephone Company of Bethesda, Md., died of congestive heart failure on January 3, 2010, at his home in Augusta, W.Va. John was born in Montvale, Va., to Halsey Clay and Mary Elizabeth McDaniel Fitzgerald where he grew up working the family farm and, as part of the war effort, driving the school bus for his fellow classmates and volunteering at the local fire departments. Upon graduation in 1945 from Montvale High School he joined the United States Navy and served from 1945 to 1948 as a pilot in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and in Munitions in San Francisco, Calif. After his retirement from the phone company, John continued his life as a gentleman farmer in West Virginia on his farm along the North River. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Vaughan Fitzgerald; two sons, Jerry Maurice Fitzgerald, of Augusta, W.Va., and Tracy Lee Fitzgerald, of Capon Bridge, W.Va.; two daughters, Kelly Jo Fitzgerald, of Augusta, W.Va., and Dawn Marie Fitzgerald, of Chester, Md.; one sister, Gladys Mangum, of Lanham, Md.; two brothers, Robert Fitzgerald, of Capon Bridge, W.Va., and Larry Fitzgerald, of Islamorada, Fla.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. EARLE, George William, 54, died suddenly at his home Sunday, January 3, 2010. He was born in Winchester, Virginia to Willie-Mae Earle and Gilbert Charles Earle, an adjuster for the General Adjustment Bureau. He married his wife, Jonnie, in 1979 becoming an immediate stepfather to her 11-year-old daughter Tracy. They were subsequently blessed with two sons, George in 1981 and Matthew in 1982. George always loved sports and was a star tennis player at Douglas Freeman High School. He remained active in athletics later as a coach with the Tuckahoe Little League, highlighted by an appearance in the 1981 Little League World Series with his team the Dodgers, with newborn son, George, looking on from the bleachers. He went on to coach both of his sons at the Tuckahoe Little League. After spending several years in the insurance industry, George fulfilled a lifelong desire to work for himself and opened his first Antique Booth at Tuckahoe Village Shopping Center. With his incredible talent for dealing with people, the business soon expanded to include two other locations. The business was ultimately consolidated under one roof to its current location at 2004 Staples Mill Road. Consistently garnering 'Best of Richmond' awards, West End Antiques Mall is renowned throughout the metro area for outstanding service, value and a long list of loyal customers. George and Jonnie, long standing members of Discovery United Methodist Church, gave generously of their time, love and talents. George most recently served on the Finance Committee. A man whose personality loomed even larger than his considerable physical stature, George will be remembered for his unique, dry humor, compassion and his love for selling antiques. Throughout his life, and to an even greater extent in recent years, he derived much joy from time spent with his wife, sons, daughter and grandsons fishing and attending football and baseball games. BILO, Gregory P., age 67, beloved husband and father, died peacefully in his home after a brief illness Thursday, December 31, 2009. Gregory was a native of Lynn, Massachusetts and resided in Sandston, Va. with his wife of 46 years, Shirley Bilo. Gregory retired from the Henrico County Parks and Recreation department in 1995 after several years of service. He was the son of the late, Joseph Bilo Sr. and Lena Fagan. Judge MacKenzie, a Portsmouth native, was the son of the late Henry William and Clara Maupin Ashton MacKenzie., A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Judge MacKenzie received his undergraduate and law degrees from Washington and Lee University, where he was president of Kappa Alpha fraternity. He then served as an officer in the Coast Guard during World War II., While practicing law in Portsmouth, he was appointed assistant judge in Portsmouth Police Court, then was elected to the State Legislature of Virginia, where he served from 1954-1958. He was president of the Portsmouth Assembly from 1950-1955., Judge MacKenzie was appointed to the United States District Court in 1967, where he served until he retired in 1997. During his service in the U.S. District Court, he was elected president of the District Court Judges Association, Eastern Virginia, Fourth Circuit in 1978; Chief Judge, U.S. District Court, Eastern District of Virginia 1980-1986; Federal Jury Committee 1972-1980; Eastern Virginia Chairman, Council of Boy Scouts 1972-1973; president of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce in 1967; and First Citizen of Portsmouth in 1968. He was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, where he served on the vestry, as Senior Warden and as a trustee. He was also a member of the American Bar Association, the Rotary Club and the Pyramid Club., He was preceded in death by his sisters, Martha M. Clark and Clara M. John M. Fleming BRISTOL, Tenn. John M. Fleming, 91, died early Saturday morning, Jan. 2, 2010, in Bristol Re gional Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Anne, whom he married in Oct. of 2004; two daughters, Ann Carter McLendon and husband, Eugene of Atlanta, and Gwen Scaff and husband, Fred of Columbus, Miss.; three granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren; two stepchildren, Jan Patrick and husband, Roger of Bristol Tennessee and Henry Preston King IV and wife, Sharon of Harrison, Tenn.; four step grandchildren; one step great-grandchild; and a brother, Lindell C. Fleming of Colo. John was married to the former Gwendolyn Phillips of Cambridge, Md., who had served as a Tennessee state representative. She passed away in Jan. of 2002. He was born in Upland, Ind., on July 10, 1918, to Oris and Mildred Tomlinson Fleming. The family relocated that same year to Washington, D.C. where he resided for 20 years. He graduated from Roosevelt High School, Southeastern University and attended George Washington University. He was associated with the Bendix Corporation in two divisions, Bendix Radio and Friez Instruments in Baltimore prior to and after serving in World War II. After the war, he was also associated with Universal Molded Products in Bristol as vice president of manufacturing and with Sperry Corp. and Univac in Bristol and in Blue Bell, Pa., retiring as plant controller. He served in WW II as a combat infantryman in the 84th Division in Europe and retired from the Army Reserve as a major. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the 84th Infantry Division Society, and the Retired Officers Association. In Bristol, he was past president of the Country Club of Bristol and the Bristol Host Lion's Club. He was a vestryman, senior warden and lay reader of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, past chairman of SCORE, and a former member of Bristol Industrial Development Board. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until 1:50 Tuesday afternoon at Emmanuel Episcopal Church. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Dr. Mark Frazier officiating. ARMSTEAD, Joseph "Joe" Andrew, died on Saturday, January 2, 2010 at MCV Hospital. He was eight years old. Joseph was born April 9, 2001 in Chesterfield, Virginia. His parents are Kristina O. and Clifton Lee Armstead Jr. of Midlothian. In addition to his parents, Joseph is survived by his older brother, Clifton "Tripp" Lee Armstead III; his paternal great-grandmothers, Magdalene Armstead of Richmond and Elizabeth Reynolds of Midlothian; his maternal grandparents, Ellen J. Otto and Robert J. Otto, both of Orange, Va.; his paternal grandparents, Gloria Jean and Clifton Lee Armstead Sr. of Midlothian; his two aunts, Kirsten Otto Samuels and her husband, Charles, of Rapidan, Va. and Sharonda Lewis and her husband, Donnie, of Midlothian; one uncle, Andrew H. Otto of Orange; three cousins, Corinn and Koron Lewis of Midlothian and Charlotte G. Samuels of Rapidan; two very special childhood friends, Steven and Zach Newsome of Midlothian; a whole host of other uncles, aunts, cousins and family friends too numerous to mention; and his favorite dog, Casey. When he wasn't running, playing and having lots of fun, Joseph loved to snuggle up for a little quiet time with his mama. Joseph had a wonderful sense of humor, a beautiful smile and a wise, old soul. He was creative and inquisitive, thoughtful and kind, full of spunk and mischief. Joseph's loving heart and amazing generosity of spirit was demonstrated by his wish to donate his organs. HURT, Katherine "Kitty" Mitchell, of Mechanicsville, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, January 3, 2010 after a long, courageous two-year battle with cancer and the effects of whole brain radiation. Ms. Hurt, the daughter of the late Frank Mitchell Sr. and Annie LeSueur Mitchell, was born April 15, 1933 in Buckingham County and was a graduate of John Marshall High School. She began working at United Insurance Company at the young age of 16. One of her proudest accomplishments is the fact that she worked for them for 57 years, retiring as office manager, only when forced to by her illness. Kitty will always be remembered for her contagious laugh, her incredible work ethic, her independence and her undying devotion to her children. She is survived by her two daughters, Cathi Lynn Hurt and Cindi Hurt Crawford and her husband, Greg, all of Mechanicsville; two sisters, Lillian Dowdy of Sandston and Mary Jane Jones and her husband, Thurmon, of North Carolina; three brothers, Frank Mitchell Jr. of Sandston, Kenneth Mitchell Sr. and his wife, Margaret, of Mechanicsville, and Raymond Mitchell and his wife, Louise, of Quinton; and her precious granddaughter, Jessica Leigh Archer, of Mechanicsville. She is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins. Larry L Willis LEBANON, Va. Larry L. Willis, 71, went to be with the Lord Saturday, Jan. 2, 2010, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Born July 8, 1938, in Russell County, a son of the late Grover Willis and the late Bessie Combs Willis. He was a retired employee of Clinchfield Coal Company with 42 years of service and a member of the U.M.W.A. local No. 1259. Mr. Willis was a U. S. Army Veteran and he was of the Christian faith, he had dedicated his life to the Lord. He loved hunting and being outdoors. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Dexter Willis; and a sister, Mary Sue Jackson. He moved to Florida as a teenager and met his wife, Bobbi in 1988, where they began their 22 year journey of growing together at Coral Springs Baptist Church. He moved his family to Virginia 11 years ago in 1998, where they became members of Newington Baptist Church. Michael was a very outgoing individual, who wanted everyone to smile and if you did not, he was sure to find a way to make you smile. Pat Christensen, 80, died on Thursday, December 17, 2009, at The Laurels of Charlottesville, while recovering from a brief illness., She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, in May, 1929 to the late Whitney Gordon Leighty and Edna Coder Leighty. Her family moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where she was raised on the banks of the Mississippi River and started her lifetime love of the water., After she married, she moved to Skaneateles, New York, where she worked for the Skaneateles school system and was a charter member of the Skaneateles Ambulance Corp for 12 years. After her marriage ended, her beloved mother-in-law, Helen Christensen, offered help if Pat wanted to leave the snows of New York to move to Dallas, Texas, which she did in 1981., Years later, after the death of her mother-in-law and the failure of multiple savings and loan companies she worked for, she moved to Charlottesville, Virginia. She had fallen in love with Virginia when she visited from drab, winter ravished New York State at Easter and the gardens were in bloom and beautiful., Pat lived in Charlottesville since 1989, with both appearance and activity level defying her age. She spent hours at the Senior Center, MedFit, ACAC, and in local classes on an interesting variety of topics. Pat travelled at every opportunity, with trips ranging from international vacations to multiple visits to Williamsburg, Virginia, every year. Pat's true passion was being a volunteer at the University of Virginia Medical Center where she started in the Cancer Center in 1992, moved to the Hospice and Palliative Care Unit for nine years and then returned to her first love, the Cancer Center. A native and lifelong resident of Phoebus, she was a 1943 graduate of Hampton High School. Rosemary was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Ladies of St. Joseph and was once Churchwoman of the Year., She was born on Nov. 8, 1924, and was one of seven children to P.A. Fuller, proprietor of Fuller's Restaurant and Hotel, and Helen Grace Ruth., During World War II, she worked as a civilian clerk typist at Fort Monroe. Following the war, she married Robert J. Curtin in 1947. They were married for more than 55 years before his death in 2003., An avid swimmer, Rosemary was an American Red Cross water safety instructor and taught swimming lessons to the young and old at the Chamberlin Hotel and Fort Monroe Officer Club pools for more than three decades. She was a renowned candy maker and once won a Blue Ribbon at the Virginia State Fair for her chocolate fudge. She also volunteered for various charitable and social activities with Saint Mary's Star of the Sea School and St. Joseph's Catholic Church., Rosemary is survived by her sons, Robert J. Curtin Jr. of Hampton, Joseph G. Curtin of Woodbridge, Thomas F. Curtin of Newport News, and Philip G. Mrs. Lee was born in Portsmouth, the youngest of eight children of the late Rebecca and Harry Berlin. When she was eight, her mother died, and because of the size of the family, she was then raised by her oldest sibling, the late Minnie Hyman and her husband, Jake. She adored them both. She grew up in Norfolk, and graduated from Maury High School in 1938., Mrs. Lee resided on the Peninsula for most of her adult life, living for 50 years with her husband, the late Martin T. Lee, in their beloved home on Longwood Drive in the Riverside area of Newport News., Mr. and Mrs. Lee were among the founding members of Temple Sinai, the Peninsula's Reform Jewish congregation in 1955. She was active in the Temple's Sisterhood, and was also a member of the National Council of Jewish Women and Hadassah., Mrs. Lee was a longtime member of The Great Books Club, a group of women from the Riverside and Hidenwood areas of Newport News, who enjoy reading and discussing the literary classics. The club was established in 1970, and carries on to this day. Ruth and Martin were married for 62 years and they truly adored one another. They loved to dance, which they did into their eighties. They were both avid bridge players, and enjoyed playing whenever the opportunity presented itself., Mrs. Lee is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Richard H. Lee and Helene B. Lee of Midlothian, and James J. Lee and Doris P. Lee of Dallas, Texas. Marquitta Diane Bradford Shrader, 48, of Elliston, Va., left this earth on Sunday, January 3, 2010, to join her heavenly Father and other family members in Heaven. Daniel B. (Dan) Todd, of Daleville, Va., died on Saturday, January 2, 2010, after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Mr. Todd was born in Independence, Va., to Bays M. and Blanche Kirk Todd. He was a graduate of Independence High School as valedictorian, National Business College in Roanoke, and the School of Bank Management held at the University of Virginia. He was employed by Grayson National Bank in 1953 and at the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Timberville, Va., in 1965, eventually becoming President, Chief Executive Officer (retiring in 1996), and Chairman of the Board (retiring in 2001)., He lived with his wife of 58 years in retirement in Botetourt County, ultimately residing at the Glebe. He loved his family and his garden. He supplied his neighbors with produce in the summer and was particularly proud of his sweet corn and musk melons., Mr. Todd was a 50 year Mason and Past Master of Independence Masonic Lodge No. #129 A.F. and A.M., as well as Past Master of Boone Lodge No. #247 A.F. and A.M. in Troutville, Va. He was known for his prowess in memorization, having known by heart in excess of 33,000 words comprising the first three degrees of the Blue Lodge Masons. He was also a past member the Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies (32nd Degree) and the ACCA Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Richmond, Va. He was past president of the Valley Shrine Club in Harrisonburg, Va., and a member of both the Kazim Shrine Temple and the Roanoke Valley Shrine Club of Roanoke, Va., Other distinctions include a listing in the 1968 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America; Past President of Grayson County Businessmen's Club; Membership in the Broadway-Timberville Ruritan Club; and the Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Development Corporation. FRYE, Virginia N. "Lucky," of Richmond, died on January 2, 2010, after a brief battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her parents, John L. and Della E. Nash of Clifford, Va.; and is survived by her husband of 47 years, James M. Frye. Other family survivors are a brother, John Thomas Nash and his wife, Patricia, of Clifford; a sister, Alice N. Coates (widow of James W. Coates), of Lynchburg; six nieces and nephews, David Nash of Clifford, Virginia N. Zirkle and her husband, Michael of Amherst, Thomas Nash and his wife, Heather of Lynchburg, Ann Harper C. Pittman, Ellen Coates, and Elizabeth Coates, all of Richmond; and four grandnieces and grandnephews, Claire Pittman and Joseph Pittman, both of Richmond, Layne Zirkle and LeeAnne Zirkle, both of Amherst. Special surviving friends include Frances Robinson and George Taliaferro. The family will receive friends at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Ave. on Tuesday, January 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, January 6, at 11 a.m. at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 6000 Grove Ave., Richmond, Va. 23226 and at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, P.O. Mrs. Walden was born in Greeley, Colo., on March 17, 1916, to George Aubrey Spear, a banker, and Margaret Uzzell Spear, a homemaker. She attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and graduated from Colorado State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Colorado) in 1938. Following graduation, she taught school at Ovid, on the Colorado plains, and at Climax, in the high Rockies. During World War II, she returned to Greeley, where she worked as the clerk of the local draft board. After meeting and marrying her husband at the end of the war, she moved with him to Virginia, first to Charlottesville, then to Salem, and finally to Roanoke, where she raised her sons, taught school, and lived the remainder of her life. Prior to her retirement, she taught English at Jefferson High School, where she chaired the English Department for several years and was selected for the Teacher Recognition Award by the senior class in 1963; Lucy Addison High School; and William Fleming High School. Dot was a member of Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church, as well as a 75 year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood., Mrs. Walden is survived by her son, David Lewis Walden of Atlanta, Ga.; her son, Thomas Spear Walden, his wife, Marguerite, and their sons, Michael, William, and Richard, of Asheville, N.C.; her granddaughters, Lauren Aubrey Walden, of Roanoke, and Robyn Leigh Walden, of Goodview, Va., and their mother, Christina Bailey Walden, of Goodview, Va.; her nieces, Jane Sanders Hunter (John), of Beallsville, Md., Margaret Jackson Smith, of Suffolk, Va., Judy Spear Weickum (Ron), of Cheyenne, Wyo., Jane Spear Hoyman (Bill), of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Janet Spear Deland (Jerry), of Mesa, Ariz.; her "adopted" granddaughters, Paige Edwards McPherrin (John Kelly), of Winnetka, Ill., and Dr. Elizabeth Edwards Turner (Russell), of Menlo Park, Cali.; and many other relatives and friends., will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2010, at Raleigh Court Presbyterian Church with Dr. F.
