Alethia Lucas Dunn CHESAPEAKE - Alethia Lucas Dunn, formerly of the Berkley section of Norfolk, passed away within hours of her 98th Mother's Day, Saturday, May 8, 2010. Born in Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Howard and Virginia Lucas and was widowed by Howard C. "Speedy" Dunn. Mrs. Dunn was retired as an officer with Chesapeake Savings and Loan. She was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church and the Berkley Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include two sons, Howard C. Dunn Jr. and wife Ellen of Viera, Fla., and William L. "Speedy" Dunn and wife Jackie of Kissimmee, Fla.; four grandsons, Howard C. Dunn III, W. Christopher Dunn, Matthew A. Dunn and Patrick W. Dunn; three great- grandchildren, Sydney Rae Dunn, Richard C. Dunn and Emily E. Dunn; as well as a niece, Elizabeth D. Kimberling; and nephews, Ray Benton and Dwight Benton. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Granby St., Norfolk. The Rev. Bob Hobson will officiate. Allen M. Miller, 99, formerly of Radford, Va., and Shepherdsville, Ky., passed away on Saturday, May 8, 2010. He is survived by his wife, Lillian Sutphin Miller; brother, David Miller, of Ellicott City, Md.; sister, Mary Ellis, of Shepherdsville, Ky.; and numerous nieces and nephews that loved him dearly. He was a charter member and elder of Fairlawn Presbyterian Church, retired from Norfolk & Western, was a World War II veteran, and was a 64 year Mason. Anne Marie Oprandy, Anne Marie Oprandy went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, May 9, 2010. She was 92 years old., She was born August 26, 1917, in New York City, the youngest daughter of Joseph and Mary Lione. Anne was preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, Peter S. Oprandy. Also preceding her in death were her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Anne and Russell Smeltzer; brothers, Paul Lione and Anthony Lione; and a sister, Rachel Lione Castellini., Anne's life was a labor of love. Her fabulous Sunday dinners "in the country" will always be remembered by younger family members and friends. Perhaps her greatest gift was the special time and attention she showered upon her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was the most important thing in the world to her and she made it a point to keep abreast of all important family functions. Born on March 12, 1918, in Huddleston, Va., he was a son of the late Ira Clay Goode and Hinda Austin Goode. In addition to his parents, Austin was preceded in death by his sister, Marie; and her husband, Earl Hobbs; and two sisters-in-law, Betty Goode and Louise Goode. Austin was a member of the National Guard, Company "A," 116th Infantry, 29th Division. He was transferred to the 318th Infantry, 80th Division and served in the European theatre under the command of General George S. Patton. He was the plant manager of Burruss Land and Lumber Company, Inc. In 1987, he retired as plant manager of Buffalo Wood Products, a division of the Kyanite Mining Corporation. Austin was a former member of Bethesda Methodist Church, Huddleston and he later joined the First Baptist Church in Dillwyn, Va., where he served as church treasurer, deacon, trustee and Sunday school teacher. Austin is survived by his wife, Dorothy Wilkes Goode, whom he married on September 5, 1943, in Pickens, S.C.; two daughters, Linda G. Heath and her husband, Charles, of Stephens City, Va., and Mary Clay Mongold and her husband, Vernon, of Moorefield, W.Va.; a son, John A. Goode and his wife, Patricia, of Blackstone, Va.; three brothers, Joseph Edward Goode, of Bedford, Va., William Davis Goode and his wife, Polly, of Radford, Va., and Maurice Benjamin Goode and his wife, Gertie-Mae, of Huddleston, Va.; five grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Betty graduated from the University of Maryland in 1942 with a degree in home economics. She was a member of Kappa Delta sorority and as a Navy wife received numerous awards for her many hours of volunteer work for the Navy Relief Society and the American Red Cross. Betty is survived by her husband of 66 years, Eugene MacDonald of Virginia Beach; son, Stephen MacDonald of Winter Park, Fla.; son, Douglas MacDonald and his wife Lynda of Virginia Beach; and her grandson, Scott MacDonald of Virginia Beach. Charles F. Bowersett VIRGINIA BEACH - Charles F. Bowersett, 92, of Atlantic Shores Retirement Center, passed away May 6, 2010 in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. Born Sept. 21, 1917, he was raised on a small farm in Rappahannock County, Virginia where he attended a one-room schoolhouse and went on to graduate valedictorian from Rappahannock High School. A graduate of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute Class of 1940, he received a degree in mechanical engineering. He enjoyed a 33-year career with the Navy, retiring in 1974 as the director of the Mechanical Engineering Division at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in White Oak, Md. Along with his wife, Mary Minor, he enjoyed many happy years of retirement, traveling and vacationing at his beloved Owl Island in Maine. After moving to Virginia Beach in 1996, he remained active, serving as a docent at The Virginia Aquarium and Marine Science Center and helping to provide bikes for the homeless through the Urban Ministries committee of his church. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing, woodworking and family gatherings. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Mary Minor Settle; son, James and spouse Sue; daughter, Jane Hobart and spouse Bruce; son, John and spouse Dianne Goldian; daughter, Julie and spouse Kirby Griffis; as well as seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, May 14, at 11 a.m. in Virginia Beach United Methodist Church, 19th Street and Pacific Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church. |

Born on September 7, 1926 in Surry County and later resided at 305 Church St. in Wakefield, he was the son of the late Harry Lee Goodrich Sr. and Ara Whitmore Goodrich. Peter was the loving husband of the late Rose Branch Goodrich and he was the father of Clarence Allan Goodrich and his wife, Lea, of Wakefield, and Janice Goodrich Hines and her husband, John, of Broadway. He is also survived by four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; his sister, Elva Greenstreet; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the owner of the Wakefield Dry Cleaners from 1955 until 1995. He was a Master Mason at the Wakefield Masonic Lodge #198 and a former member of the Wakefield Town Council. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2010 at 3 p.m. at the Purviance Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Wakefield, with Rev. Jim Kerr officiating. May 11, 2010 Curtis Lee Ingram, 85, of 91 Magnolia St., Ridgeway, died Sunday, May 9, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. At his request, there will be no memorial service. Ingram was born in Bassett on May 7, 1925, to Jerry Thomas "Tom" Ingram and Berta Bell Arnold Ingram. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, J. Frank Ingram. He graduated form Bassett High School and received a two-year degree in business. He worked as credit manager for Gravely Furniture for 35 years before retiring in 1976. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith. Surviving are two sisters, Ailene Rodgers of Bassett and Carlene Oakes of Martinsville; 10 nieces and nephews; 19 great-nieces and -nephews; and five great-great-nieces and -nephews. Wilson, 60, of Pequea, Pa., passed away peacefully on Friday, May 7, 2010 surrounded by her loving family at the Essa Flory Hospice Center in Lancaster after a courageous and lengthy battle with multiple sclerosis. Born Oct. 10, 1949 in Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late H. Vernon and Lessie Midgett Davis. In 1976, she married Elwood R. Wilson. She was a very kind, loving, Christian woman who was devoted to her family. Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 46 years, Francis R. "Frank" Spencer; three daughters, Beth Fischer and husband Tom, Tricia Bashor, and Kathy Perdue and husband Ron; four grandchildren, Lauren Fischer, Nathan Fischer, Sarah Perdue and Michael Bashor; two brothers, Robert Peerman and William H. Herbert D. Gallop HARBINGER - Herbert Dorland Gallop, 90, of the 100 block of Herbert Gallop Lane, died Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at Albemarle Hospital. Born in Currituck County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Isaac "Ike" Gallop and the late Bertie Montague Gallop. Mr. Gallop was retired from The Virginian-Pilot where he had worked as a typesetter. He had belonged to the International Typographical Union since 1950 and also to the Communication Workers of America. Mr. Gallop was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Coast Guard as a chief boatswain's mate. He was a member of Powells Point Christian Church where he was a trustee for many years. Mr. Gallop is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven sisters and three brothers. He was the last surviving child of Isaac and Bertie Gallop. A graveside funeral service was held Monday, May 10, at the Powells Point Christian Church Cemetery with Pastor David Coxson officiating. Isabelle Jones Spencer, 86, of Roanoke, died early Sunday morning (Mother's Day) May 9, 2010. Isabelle was a longtime member of Haran Baptist Church and was a retired registered nurse with over 40 years service from Lewis-Gale Hospital. She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur B. and Mamie Sowder Jones; her sisters, Esther and Dorothy; her brothers, Vester, Julius and Lewis; and her husband, Malcolm Boyd Spencer. Surviving are her sons, Mark W. Spencer and wife, Lisa S. of Boise, Idaho, and Charlotte, N.C., Randy R. Spencer and wife, Darlene B., of Roanoke; her grandson, Matthew L. Spencer and Sarah Hudson, of Charlotte, N.C.; her sister, Elizabeth Sult and husband, Erroll, of Charlotte, N.C.; her brothers, Lester L. Jones, of Roanoke, Cecil C. Jones and wife, Sarah, of Salem; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held at Oakey's South Chapel on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at 12 noon with the the Rev. James Fulton Lively Sr. of Keswick died on Monday, May 10, 2010, at Golden Living/The Cedars Nursing Facility in Charlottesville, Virginia, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease., Jimmy was born on August 1, 1925, in Shadwell, Virginia, the son of the late Julius Lively and Nellie Collins Lively. He was also preceded in death by a son, James Fulton Lively Jr.; a daughter-in-law, Lisbeth Wilson Lively; a grandson, Jason Kendrick Lively; and a brother, Louis Lively., As a young boy, Jimmy romped with his two older brothers on the undeveloped countryside of Pantops while putting up with a tag-along little sister he liked to lovingly say that "he raised." When World War II broke out, he anxiously awaited his turn to follow his two older brothers into the effort to defend our country. In 1944, he was entered into active service as a Sergeant in the Army Corps of Engineers. In two short years he served in the American Theater of Operations, the European Theater of Operations, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations, and the East and North African Campaign. At war's end, Jimmy returned to Charlottesville, where he became a mainstay of the Charlottesville downtown merchants from the 1950's thru the 1970's, serving as one of the finest men's clothing specialists in the area. Jimmy was an avid Civil War buff and relic collector. Much of his collections were pieces he had actually "dug" himself over the forty years he made this his hobby., Jimmy is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Shirley Coleman Lively of Keswick; one daughter, Ann Cornett and her husband, Johnny Cornett, of Clarksburg, West Virginia; two grandchildren, Rachel Cornett and Joseph Cornett of Clarksburg; a very special grandson, Travis Lively of Charlottesville; a brother, Julius Lively Jr. of Charlottesville; and a sister, Marie Morris of Troy., Family night will be held from 7 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home., Graveside funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Monticello Memory Gardens., The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff at Golden Living/The Cedars Nursing Facility for their love and care for their husband and father over these last four years., In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911. |

Born Katherine Lavina Dahl in Viroqua, Wis., in 1912, she was the last surviving member of a family of 10 siblings. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and the author of three children's books. Her writing and art work were the shinning focus of her life. Born in Norfolk, she was the daughter of Larry L. and Linda Ward Singletary. Kim was a 1991 graduate of Great Bridge High School and was a cum laude graduate from TCC, where she earned degrees in general applied science, radiology and MRI. She was a MRI technician in Bon Secours Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth. She was a member of New Life at Great Bridge, where she was in the Young Married Life Group. Kim will be remembered for her love of music. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 13 years, Mark Slattery; two sons, Ethan and Collin; a brother, Larry Singletary Jr. and wife Sabrina; a father-in-law, Jack Slattery; three brothers-in- law, Mike, Matt and Mitch; a sister-in-law, Meghan and husband James; as well as a large extended family and many friends. Larimer Vaughan Stanley, of Roanoke, Va., died on Sunday, May 9, 2010. Larry was born in Henry County on July 4, 1928, and raised in Galax. He is survived by his wife, Mary Stuart Cocke Stanley; and five children, Dorothy Stanley Hart (Philip), Mary Hilliard Stanley, Ellen Stanley Booth (Robert), Richard Larimer Stanley (Eve Cohen), and Virginia Stanley Streit (Kevin); and three grandchildren, Anne Larimer Hart, Philip Edward Hart, and Katherine Elizabeth Streit. Also surviving is his brother, John W. Stanley Jr. (Sue); and several nieces and nephews. Larry graduated from Augusta Military Academy and Duke University where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He served in the United States Air Force achieving the rank of First Lieutenant before an honorable discharge. He worked with his father and brother at the family business, Blue Ridge Transfer, until 1973, when he embarked on a career in financial services and insurance. He was a 50 year member of Second Presbyterian Church. A great lover of all mountains, Larry was an especially avid hiker of the Blue Ridge. He was predeceased by his parents, John W. Stanley and Sarah Hilliard Stanley; and his sisters, Lucille Stanley Bowie and Susanne Stanley Wampler. Larry was a loving father, husband, brother, and friend, loved all things fun and merry, and he will be deeply missed by those whose lives he touched. A native of Wellsburg, W.Va., she was born Aug. 10, 1957 to the late Albert and Lola Stewart. Mrs. Caprio was a Sunday school teacher at the Pentecostals of Suffolk Church and had done after school care at Norfolk Christian School last year as well as part-time work with the Norfolk Public Schools. She is survived by her husband, Anthony; her two sons, Nicholas and Zachary and his wife Ashley; and two precious granddaughters, Ava Marie, Mya Nicole. She was predeceased by three brothers, Larry, John, Glenn Stewart and one sister, Linda Stewart. She had three remaining brothers, Albert, Gary, Charles Stewart; seven remaining sisters, Wilma Brooks, Esther Thomas, Gloria Owens, Kay McCrankin, Alberta Taylor, Carol Kerper, and Christina Elliott. May 11, 2010 GOLDSBORO, N.C. — Malcolm Lee "Mac" Gourley, 86, of 106 Powers Court, Goldsboro, died Monday, May 10, 2010, at Wayne Memorial Hospital. He was born in Spray, now Eden, N.C., on June 19, 1923, to Fitz Lee "Tobe" Gourley and Mozelle Hobson Gourley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Willard Gourley and Melvin Gourley of Virginia; and his half sister, Jane Gourley of Washington. He graduated from North Carolina State University and served in the European Theater with the Army Signal Corps during World War II. Gourley worked in textiles and personnel management at several plants in North Carolina and Virginia. He retired as personnel manager at J.P. Stevens and from Southco Distributing. He was a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the J. Paul Edwards Sunday School Class, served as an usher and was a former member of the United Methodist Men. He was a past president and member of the Golden K Kiwanis Club and had been active in Boy Scouting, serving as a scoutmaster and Cub Scout leader. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Frances Hundley Gourley of the home; two sons, David Gourley of Wake Forest and Mark Gourley of Goldsboro and Fayetteville; three grandchildren; and two brothers, Wallace Gourley of Southern Pines and Frank Gourley of Henry, Va. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Harry officiating. A private inurnment will be held in the church columbarium. The family will receive friends in the church parlor after the service, and other times at the home. May Hampton Hairston, 90, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with her heavenly Father on Saturday afternoon, May 8, 2010. She was born on April 27, 1920, in Eden, N.C. She was the eighth child of nine children born to the late Tyler and Cora Hampton. She was preceded in death by three brothers; three sisters; and two great-grandsons. Mary was a dedicated and faithful member of Sweet Union Baptist Church. Those left to cherish fond memories included one son, Essex (Carolyn) Hairston; one daughter, Dr. Freddie Laverne (Paul) Higgins; six grandchildren, Basil and Andre Hairston, of Roanoke, Melissa R. Reynolds; children, Mary Kathryn Reynolds McIvor and her husband, Joe, of Gladys, Virginia, Army Chaplain Lieutenant Colonel Charles E. Reynolds and his wife, Marcia, of Washington, D.C., Jeanne Reynolds Yeager and her husband, Kevin, of Chesterfield, Virginia; grandchildren, Erin and Katie Norfleet, Jordan and Jillian Reynolds, and Robert, Forrest and Jenna Yeager; a brother, Charlie and his wife, Nell, of Hildebran, North Carolina; sisters, Annie Kelly of Roswell, New Mexico, Faye and her husband, John Asherbranner; and sisters-in-law, Claudia and Irene Hildebrand of Hickory, North Carolina., Minnie grew up in Hildebran, North Carolina. She attended Carver School of Missions and Social Work, Louisville, Kentuck, and completed graduate studies at University of North Carolina, University of Virginia, and Piedmont Virginia Community College., Minnie was a beloved wife and mother. She enjoyed working with her husband as a team in church ministries in North Carolina and Virginia. She taught her own private kindergarten, the first in Buckingham County, for four years; and in the public schools of the Bedford and Albemarle Communities for 16 years. She loved her children, grandchildren and all children., After taking early retirement, she was Assistant Activities Director for Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Stuart. After her husband's retirement, she enjoyed working as a substitute teacher for Albemarle Schools where she was known as "Miss Minnie" as well as "Johnny Appleseed." She also volunteered in nursing homes in Charlottesville, Crozet and Dillwyn. Thomas Dickinson (Tom) Burgess III, 73, of Wickenburg, Ariz., and formerly of Narrows, Va., passed away on April 29, 2010, at his home in Wickenburg. Tom was born in Williamson, W.Va., on February 15, 1937, and was the son of the late Cornelius Jefferson Burgess and Elaine Waybright Burgess., He was reared and educated in the Narrows community and received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. He taught Agricultural Education in the public schools of Pittsylvania and Rockingham Counties in Virginia for 31 years. Upon retirement in 1991 he returned to Narrows and became involved in community activities and organizations. In 1992 he was elected to the Narrows Town Council. Memberships included the New River Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, The Narrows Lions Club, Giles County Chamber of Commerce, and PINN (Progress in Narrows Now) organizations, Blacksburg Sports Club, Virginia Tech Alumni Association and the Hokie Club. He was also a life member and held office in numerous state and national professional education organizations., In 1960 he married Diana Faye Moore, of Harrisonburg, Va., and four children resulted from this union. The children are Tanya Danielle Burgess, of Linville, Va., Thomas Dickinson Burgess IV (Manoli), of Woodstock, Va., Jefferson Moore Burgess, of New Market, Va., and Diana Layne Burgess Ballard (Jay), of Mapleton, Utah; grandchildren, Kelsey, Alex and Blair Hulvey, Thomas D. Burgess IV, David Burgess and Heather Burgess, Jackson and Truman Burgess, Elizabeth, Virginia, Thomas, Robin, Spencer, Anna, and Jacob Ballard; and two great-grandsons, Thomas D. Burgess VI and Xavier Burgess., He is survived by current wife, Ruby Hancock Burgess, of Wickenburg, Ariz., A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. on Friday, May 14, 2010, at Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg. Timothy Elder Ward AHOSKIE - Timothy Elder Ward, known to his many friends as T.E., died Monday, May 10, 2010, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Ruth Coggins Ward; his son, Tim and wife Laura of Greensboro, N.C.; and his daughter, Karen and husband Craig Garriss of Kitty Hawk, N.C. Also surviving are his sister, Sarah Ward Carver of Jacksonville, Fla., and his brother, Gordon Ward of Bossier City, La. Grandchildren are Charles Ward of Raleigh, Caroline Ward of Greensboro, and Samantha Garriss of Kitty Hawk. After serving overseas in World War II, T.E. returned to Suffolk where he traveled for American Bank & Trust Co. In 1949, he moved to Ahoskie, when he became a partner in Ahoskie Motor Co. Seeing the need for another local bank, he was instrumental in starting a branch of Planters National Bank. He held positions on the board of directors and executive committee in Rocky Mount and on the board of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. From 1963 to 1983, he was secretary treasurer for E.R. Evans & Sons Inc. In 1983, T.E. became secretary treasurer of E.L.E. Inc. Not only was he actively involved in the business and professional life of his town, he also served the community in other ways: as a 16- year member of the Town Council, president of the Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Ahoskie Industrial Development Commission. He was a longtime faithful member of First Baptist Church Ahoskie and the Radio Bible Class. Life in the small town was not all work and no play. He was an avid golfer at the local Beechwood Country Club, where he and his wife Ruth attended many social functions. A good friend who was following his fancy moves to the music said, "If you can't dance with T.E., you can't dance." Many in his wide circle of friends would say of him: "He was a true gentleman: polite, kind, thoughtful, loving and generous." The family will receive friends at the home. William J. Affeldt PORTSMOUTH - William J. Affeldt, 82, passed away May 7, 2010. He was a native of Cleveland and the son of the late Lydia S. and Harley A. Affeldt. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, a 60-year member of Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge No. 178, and a member of the Royal Arch Chapter No. 72. He retired from Shop No. 11 of Norfolk Naval Shipyard and was an Army veteran of Korea. William is survived by his wife of 54 years, Dorothy Affeldt; a brother, Harley P. Affeldt and wife Virginia of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sons, William J. Affeldt Jr. and wife Libby of Roswell, Ga., Robert Affeldt and wife Debbie of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Jessica, Allison, Amanda and Ian; and nephew, Jim Affeldt of Norfolk. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Centenary United Methodist Church by the Rev. George Neas with Masonic rites. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. William Hamilton (Ham) Flannagan Sr., of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Tuesday, May 4, 2010. Mr. Flannagan was preceded in death by his parents, Hannah Mae and Henry A. Flannagan; his wife, Kathryn Middleton Flannagan; and his brother, Henry A. Flannagan Jr. He is survived by his sons, William H. Flannagan Jr. and wife, Meribeth, of Woodbridge, Va., and J. Michael Flannagan Sr. and wife, Deborah, of Roanoke, Va.; daughter, Patricia F. Sarver and husband, Nelson W., of Roanoke, Va. Six grandchildren also survive Mr. Flannagan, Sarah F. Lewis and husband, Matthew, of Germantown, Md., Anne Hunter Flannagan, of Roanoke, Va., William H. Flannagan III, of Burke, Va., John Michael Flannagan Jr., of San Francisco, Calif., Kelly S. Williams and husband, T. Craig, of Midlothian, Va., and Kathryn S. Adkins and husband, R. Daniel II, of Vinton, Va.; as well as three great-grandsons; and favorite feline, "Pookie." Mr. Flannagan was born in Trevillians, Va., on September 14, 1920. Ham graduated from Hampden-Sydney College at age 19 with honors and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. While at Hampden-Sydney, he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track. He served in the United States Army Medical Administrative Corps during World War II. He was the member of the Pylon Society at Virginia Tech and a lifetime benefactor and a founder of the Roanoke Valley Hokie Club. Additionally, he was the 1980 Virginia State Chili Champion., Ham served as President of [Carilion] Roanoke Memorial Hospital for 32 years before his retirement in 1986. Prior to that he was the Director of Hospitals for McGuire V.A. Hospital in Richmond and in 1951 he was appointed the first administrator of [Carilion] Franklin Memorial Hospital which opened in 1952. Under his leadership, Memorial and Crippled Children's Hospital became Roanoke Memorial Hospital, which ultimately led to the formation of Carilion Clinic: a seven-hospital, 12,000-employee health system that is the Valley's largest employer. He was named administrator of the hospital in 1954 and was instrumental in, among his many accomplishments, building a 325-bed addition to the hospital, developing Carilion's School of Nursing, building cancer and rehabilitation centers, opening the area's first intensive care unit, partnering with UVA Medical Center, establishing medical and administrative residency programs and growing Carilion into the health system it is today. Ham also served as a member of the State Board of Health., Ham was granted an honorary Doctorate of Law degree by Hampden-Sydney College (H-SC) in 1976; additionally H-SC inducted him into Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Society in 1978. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Patrick Henry Society, Hampden-Sydney College as well. He was a Regent of the American College of Healthcare Executives as well as a Lifetime Fellow of the ACHE. Throughout his career he served on numerous civic and professional boards and organizations. He was Chairman of the Virginia-Carolinas Hospital Conference, the Southeastern Hospital Conference and, in 1963, became the Chairman Virginia Hospital Association., Ham was a long-time supporter and educator of young hospital executives. Over the years he offered opportunities and training to numerous students in administrative residency programs from the Medical College of Virginia, Georgia State University, Trinity University, Brigham Young University and many other schools throughout the country. A generation of hospital executives in Virginia trained at Roanoke Memorial., In recognition of those contributions, he was named an honorary alumnus of the Medical College of Virginia/VCU School of Healthcare Administration. He was also responsible, along with his friend, colleague, and fellow H-SC alum, Dr. Charles L. Crockett, for developing medical school affiliations and residencies at RMH, thereby firmly establishing medical education in the Roanoke Valley., In 1982 Ham was selected one of "A Dozen Who Made a Difference A Salute to Those Who Had a Major Role in Building Roanoke." In 1986 he was awarded the Key to the City and was named Roanoke's "Citizen of the Year." He was a past Elder of Second Presbyterian Church and 50 year member of the Masonic Order, and a member of Lakeland Lodge #190., The family will be receiving friends on Friday, May 14, 2010, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Second Presbyterian Church, 215 Mountain Avenue, SW, Roanoke, Va. William Owen Shelton Jr. of Midlothian, formerly of Fluvanna County, passed away suddenly on May 5, 2010., He is survived by his wife, Janet Richardson Shelton of Midlothian; and three sons, Richard W., James H., and William O. Shelton III; as well as six grandchildren and three great-grandsons, all of Florida., A son, Robert, preceded him in death., Mr. Shelton was born on August 16, 1923, in Joplin, Missouri, a son of the late Elizabeth Hansford and William O. Shelton Sr., He attended the University of Michigan majoring in music theory and was employed for 30 years with C. G. Conn Ltd., manufacturers of musical instruments, where he was a District Sales Manager in many parts of the country, as well as Director of Educator Services. He was also a veteran of World War II, having served in the European Theater of the Eighth Army/Air Force where he was a member of the band which replaced the Glen Miller Band when Miller's plane was lost over the North Sea., Mr. Shelton was an avid jazz enthusiast, and spent many of his retirement years playing trombone in big bands and small combos., He will be buried in the Richardson family plot at Hillcrest Cemetery in Louisa.
