BURTON, Ambler Hill, a former sheriff of Dinwiddie County, died Thursday, May 20, 2010 at his home in Dinwiddie County. He was born January 15, 1925, the son of the late John Lemuel and Alice Gilliam Hill Burton. Well known in Dinwiddie County and throughout Southside Virginia, Mr. Burton graduated from Dinwiddie High School in 1943. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in World War II. After the Navy, Mr. Burton joined the Virginia State Police. In 1958, he was appointed Sheriff of Dinwiddie County, and he served in that position until 1971. Mr. Burton then farmed until he retired in 1986. Mr. Burton was President of the Virginia State Crime Clinic in 1969 and taught law enforcement classes at John Tyler Community College while sheriff. He served on numerous community and civic boards, and was a former President of the Virginia Sheriffs Association and a member of the board of the National Sheriffs Association. He also was a former Commander of Dinwiddie Post 149 of the American Legion. He was a life-long member and longtime chairman of the board of Prospect Christian Church. Mr. Burton is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marian "Peggy" Parker Easley Burton; a daughter, Martha Ann Burton; twin sons, Richard Hill Burton and John Steven Burton; a grandson, William Briggs Burton; a sister, Carrie Paige Burton Kemp; and nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service for Mr. Burton will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, May 24, 2010, at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Burial will be private. May 23, 2010 The funeral for Ada Rea Priddy, 78, of Bassett, who died Thursday, May 20, 2010, at her home, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Bassett Funeral Services chapel with Dr. G.H. Vaughn and the Rev. Dale Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Blackberry Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. She was born in Patrick County to Henry Lee Rea and Della Craig Rea. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Linda R. Adele Vann Bruce VIRGINIA BEACH - Adele Vann Bruce, loving mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her, went to be with the Lord May 21, 2010. A native of Conway, N.C., she was born Dec. 18, 1919 to the late Elijah and Sadie Vann. Adele was a member of Spurgeon Memorial Baptist Church since 1942. She worked at Southland Cork and retired from Norfolk School System as a special needs bus driver. She delivered with Meals on Wheels for 13 years. She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years, James M. Bruce; her daughter, Jacquelyn B. Linkenhoger; and brothers, Ivey Mason Vann, Laurie Vann and Charlie Woolard Vann. GRIFFIN, Alan Overton, 71, died Friday, May 21, 2010. He was the widower of Mary Anne Whitley Griffin and son of the late Ernest Elton and Amelia Lowry Griffin. He is survived by his son, Jeffrey S. Griffin (Kris); and daughters, Lori Ann Griffin Armstrong and Amy Griffin Flournoy (Jeff); grand-children, Matthew and Lindley Griffin, Ashley and Brooke Wright and Ryann Flournoy; and sisters, Linda Robinson and Patsy McPherson. Mr. Griffin graduated from Douglas Freeman High School and attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He was an engineer for Reynolds Metals Company, Reynolds International, Inc. and Sulzer Corporation for 40 years. He was a member of Welborne United Methodist Church, the Richmond Power Squadron, and served for many years as both a volunteer fireman and a volunteer police community assistance officer in Henrico County. Albert Padilla PORTSMOUTH - Albert Padilla, 66, died May 20, 2010, following a long and courageous battle with progressive supranuclear palsy. Born in Pomona, Calif., he served in the U.S. Navy. He retired after a career in civil service. He was a hardworking man and a natural born craftsman. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends. He was a kind man, always caring, smiling, loving and giving. He was loved by all who were privileged to know him and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Margaret Weeks Padilla; his children, Susan Padilla Whitehurst and husband Kevin, Raymond Padilla and Allen Padilla; grandchildren, Wesley, Walker, and Whitney Whitehurst, and Isabelle and Raymond Padilla; his mother, stepmother, five sisters, and two brothers. Ruppel, Andrew Charles Ruppel, Professor Emeritus at University of Virginia, passed away at his home on Thursday, May 20, 2010., He was born on August 9, 1938, in New York City, to Carl Philip and Margaret Emilie Nessel Ruppel., Andy is survived by his wife of 44 years, Imogene Newman Ruppel. Other survivors are a sister, Joan Minovosky and her husband, Frank, of Leesburg, Florida; a niece, Susan Collins and her husband, Roger; two nephews, Gary Kollmann and his wife, Peggy, and Bruce Kollmann and his wife, Pat; and two great-nieces, Christine Kollmann and Jeanette Klein., Andy was a Professor of Management Information Technology. During his long tenure at McIntire, he took visiting assignments with NASA in Washington, D.C. and the U.N.'s Atoms for Peace Program in Vienna, Austria. In the fall of 1971, Andy and Jean moved to Charlottesville to begin his 38 year career at the University of Virginia where he was instrumental in the design and occupancy of Rouse Robertson Hall on the East Lawn, the new home of the McIntire School of Commerce. His attention to detail and gentle demeanor led to his involvement in many projects on the grounds of the University., He served in the United States Army and earned degrees from C.W. Post (B. S. summa cum laude), the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn (M.S. in Industrial Management) and the University of North Carolina (Ph. Bernice V. Law, 89, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 20, 2010. Bernice was born in Rich Creek, Va., in October 1920. She was raised in Giles County and was married to Raymond H. Law for 61 years. Bernice worked for the Celanese Plant in Narrows and also the Belk Store in Pearisburg. She recently worked for Food Lion in Roanoke for 10 to 12 years before retiring. Bernice moved from Narrows, Va., to Roanoke in 1987, to be close to her daughter and son-in-law. Ray and Bernice were loving parents who enjoyed life. They went on trips and vacations with their daughter and son-in-law to Pigeon Forge, Tenn., and up state New York, the birthplace of Ray Law. They will be greatly missed. Ray Law was a retired Crane Operator. Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Law; father, Fetter Blankenship; mother, Lillian Blankenship; brothers, Herman Rudolph Blankenship, Oscar Harold Blankenship and E. C. Blankenship. Born in Portsmouth to the late Joyce Elizabeth Willis and Arthur Lee Flemming Jr., Betty graduated from Deep Creek High School in 1957 and Leigh Memorial School of Nursing in 1962. She worked as a nurse for many years. In her free time, she enjoyed watercolor painting and studied art under local and professional artists. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Ruth Williams Muller. He is survived by his stepmother, Honor Moore Muller of Carmel, California; and a special cousin, Pat Thomas of Yuma, Arizona. Brian received his BA from Stanford University, his master's from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. He taught Political Science and Foreign Policy at UC Davis and UCLA. Upon retiring from teaching, he worked for the March of Dimes, and then as the Western Area Manager, he was a Financial Planner for the American Red Cross. He transferred to the East Coast as a Planned Giving Officer for the American Red Cross before retiring in 1996. Brian touched our lives in so many ways. Memorial services to be announced. Carol Marie Edwards, 63, of Curve Road in Pearisburg, departed this life Saturday morning, May 22, 2010, at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg. Born in Pembroke on September 21, 1946, she was a daughter of the late Sam Williams and Ruby Cumbee Williams Cook. She had worked as cash and customer relations manager for Talheimers, Dillards, Harris Publishers and several other business houses through the years. She was a 1964 graduate of Giles High School, and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ in Pembroke. Her brothers, Lee and Grady Williams preceded her in death. She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Oliver N. Edwards; her sons, Jeff Wood and wife, Marcia, of Virginia Beach, Jonathan Wood and wife, Lori, of Chesapeake; her daughter, Bridget Winston and husband, York, of Chesapeake; her five grandchildren; her sisters, Elsie Williams, of Pearisburg, Sylvia Johnson, of Pembroke, Barbara Heathcoat, of Decatur, Tenn. Cathy Mae Jackson, Cathy Mae Jackson, 47 formerly of Esmont, departed this life peacefully at home in Charlottesville on Thursday, May 20, 2010, surrounded by her family and friends., She was born on July 12, 1962, the daughter of Shirley Anderson and James Roger Perkins., She was preceded in death by three brothers, Gary Anderson, Roger "Bunny" Perkins and James "Ben" Perkins; and one niece Shana M. Anderson., Cathy was baptized and was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Buckingham County. She was employed by the Colonnades as a chef. Cathy was a devoted family woman who loved and cared for many people. Charles Henry, Sims Sr., Charles Henry Sims Sr. was born on January 22, 1935, in Trevilians, Virginia, from the union of Tom and Ruth Sims. He was the youngest of a distinguished family of five. Growing up under the watchful eye of his grandparents, Thomas and Alice Sims, his education began at their knees along with his two siblings. Understanding, establishing and maintaining of house and home were the hallmarks of his early training and upbringing. He received his formal education from the Number C School and graduated early from the prestigious Louisa Training School of Louisa County Virginia. Education never ceased as he continued his studies at the Piedmont Virginia Community College and the Fredericksburg Bible Institute in Virginia., On July 25, 1953, Charles married his love, Fannie Lee Johnson. Heaven blessed this union with five boys and two girls. They spent their early years of marriage in Washington, D.C., until Charles completed building their home in Louisa, Virginia. This is the home where they continued to love, nurture and educate their blossoming children.After maintaining a work schedule that required him to travel from Fort Meade, Maryland, and Fort Lee in Petersburg, Virginia, Charles accepted a position at the Foreign Science and Technology Center in Charlottesville, Virginia. As Charles H. Sims Sr. is known for his commitment and focus, he completed 30 years of government service before retiring with numerous citations, acknowledgements and awards., While these activities were the scheduled order of the day, the essence of his existence was clearly defined when he accepted the call to preach the gospel ministry. Charles H. Sims, Sr. accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior at an early age at the Oak Grove Baptist Church located in Trevilians, Virginia. It was at this church he was licensed to preach on May 17, 1964. With the collective support of his wife, the Reverend Charles H. Sims Sr., began his pastoral ministry at the Mount Olive Baptist Church located in Montpelier, Virginia, in the spring of 1965. The zeal and power with which he proclaimed the gospel not only attributed to him being a highly sought guest preacher and evangelist, but also impacted the success of his pastoral ministry. He served as Pastor of the Mount Olive Baptist Church in Montpelier, Virginia, Eagle Baptist Church in Louisa, Virginia, and the Main Uno Baptist Church in Madison, Virginia. After a decade of devoted service to Mount Olive, he accepted the call for pastoral ministry at the Thessalonia Baptist Church in Fork Union, Virginia. During his stay at these "fields of labor" (as he called them) numerous souls were touched and saved. The collective efforts of those memberships reflected the exuberance of his pastoral leadership. Reverend Sims concluded his pastoral leadership after nearly a decade at Thessalonia and two decades at Main Uno as he continued to serve the Eagle Baptist Church. In December 2008, he retired from his pastoral service and received the Pastor Emeritus Status. Yes, forty-three plus of continuous pastoral ministry or one could rightly count nearly eighty years of service., Because of the contributions in his faith walk and ministry, the Reverend Charles H. Sims Sr. was bestowed an honorary doctorate degree from the Eastern Theological Seminary. The passion in his service carried him to roles of community activism and liturgical leadership. As the moderator of the Wayland Blue Ridge Baptist Association, he led in the constructing of its historical headquarters in Rixeyville, Virginia. At the conclusion of his allotted terms and various board chairmanships, Reverend. Dr. Sims was bestowed the Moderator Emeritus status., Reverend Dr. Sims is well known in many circles and highly regarded among his peers. His reach and inspiring presence was very welcoming. He will be remembered for having a word or two or three or four in any meeting. Beyond his preaching and pastoral legacy is the fact that Reverend Dr. Sims was always ready to pray for others, no matter when nor where as he held those hands tight while talked to God about the situation. HETTLER, David Arnas, 49, of West Hills, Calif., died peacefully at home on Saturday, February 27, 2010, after a courageous fight against brain cancer. Born in Berea, Ohio on September 2, 1960, to Robert and Saide Hettler, and raised in Midland, Mich. and Walnut Creek, Calif., Dave graduated in 1982 from Claremont McKenna College with a bachelor of arts degree in economics/ accounting. A four year varsity basketball player at Claremont, at 6'10" Dave was an imposing presence on the court and a visible leader on the campus. After graduation, Dave joined the "Big Eight" accounting firm of Arthur Young (now Ernst & Young), where he earned his CPA and rose to the position of senior manager. In 1993 Dave joined Warner Bros. and during his tenure at the studio his responsibilities included oversight of financial activities for Warner Bros.' international theaters, international theme parks, retail stores, and consumer products businesses, ultimately serving in the role of Executive Vice President, Worldwide Finance and I.T. for Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group. Additionally, Dave served as a member of the management team overseeing the implementation of Warner Bros.' SAP finance and procurement system worldwide. A dedicated and often selfless executive, Dave played an indispensable role in guiding Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Group through the economic storms of the past several years. At Warner Bros. he is remembered as "a strikingly effective leader, kind and helpful to everyone he encountered." Dave enjoyed traveling with his family and many of their vacations included an opportunity to pursue sports. Whether skiing with his family in Whistler or surfing with his children in Hawaii, Dave always enjoyed time spent with his family. Annual family reunions each summer to the Outer Banks, N.C. were a treat for him to spend a week with his extended family. Dave had a passion for music, fitness, and weekend pick up basketball games with friends. He lived life to its fullest. As stated recently by his alma mater, Dave "was in the finest sense of the words a gentle giant of a man." He always thought of others before himself and had a tremendous positive impact on everyone who was fortunate enough to have known him. He will be greatly missed. Dave is survived by his wife, Sheri; his son, Shane; and his daughter, Shelby; his parents, Robert and Saide of Midlothian; his brother, Neil and his wife, Karen, and their three sons, Matthew, Ben and David of Granville, Ohio; and his sister, Barbara and her husband, Steve Womack, and their two daughters, Samantha and Celeste of Midlothian, Va. A memorial service and reception celebrating Dave's life was held Saturday, March 6, 2010 at the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in North Hollywood. Donald Lee "Doc" Penley Mr. Donald Lee "Doc" Penley, age 57, went home to be with Jesus on May 21, 2010. Born May 8, 1953, in Richlands, Va., he was a son of the late Ervin and Beulah Penley of Drill, Va. He was a member of the Drill community for most of his life and worked as a coal miner for Jewell Smokeless Coal Corporation for twenty-seven years until he became disabled. He enjoyed driving trucks for many years. He lived life to its fullest and enjoyed telling funny stories that would make people laugh. He began his fight against cancer eighteen months ago and was a brave courageous soldier through it all. In spite of his sickness, he continued to love his life and he never complained about his battle, he would always say, "Life is beautiful, but Heaven is better!" He spent his days trying to make a difference in the lives of others. He worked hard to provide for his family and volunteered in the community if someone needed help. He lived up to the name "Doc" because if something was wrong, he had the cure. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma Penley and Alma Lowe; and several nieces and nephews. He left behind the love of his life and adoring wife of 38 years, Debora Penley; two daughters, Angela Penley Johnson and husband Bradley of Council, Va., and Amy Penley Clark and husband, Eric of Jonesboro, Tenn.; two granddaughters, Emmalee Noel Johnson and Bella Grace Clark who were both loved very much by their Paw "P"; very special nephew whom he considered a son, Terry Lowe and wife, Karen of Honaker, Va., and a special niece whom he also considered a granddaughter, Allie Elizabeth Lowe; a special niece whom he considered as a daughter, Jenny Short of Honaker, Va., and special foster grandson, Corey Lee Seth Hubbard of Lebanon, Va.; brothers and sisters, Ervin (Bub) Penley, Issac (Pete) Penley, Ella (Sis) Short, Hattie Fields, Eura Boyd, Stanley Penley, Jim Penley, Benny Penley and Harold Penley also survive. It was Don's wish that all his family meet him again one day in Heaven. He also left behind many friends and will always be remembered in their hearts as a strong, happy, compassionate man with a heart of gold. HARKINS, Dr. Stephen W., 67, of Richmond, passed away on May 20, 2010 of cancer. He is survived by his wife, Janice; son, James; daughter, Emily H. Gold (Will); granddaughter, Abigail; brother, Peter B. (Judith); sister, Alice Maniloff, (Howard); two nephews, Mark B. Harkins (Laura Trivers) and Peter T. Maniloff. Dr. Harkins was born on August 20, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Ralph W. and Elizabeth B. Harkins. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.A. degree in English in 1967 and a Ph.D. in Psychology in 1975. He obtained an M.A. in Public Health from VCU in 2008. Dr. Harkins began his professional career at the University of Washington in Seattle and went on to teach and do research at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a specialist in gerontology, psychophysiology and served as the Research Coordinator of the Dementia Clinic. He was an avid hobbyist, enjoying woodworking, boating and fishing, and photography. LECHOWICZ, Eleanore Marie Zendarski, age 93, of Mechanicsville, formerly of Pittsburgh, Pa., passed away peacefully on May 17, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Victor T. Lechowicz. She is survived by her three cherished daughters and sons-in-law, Helen (Marty) Blough of Mechanicsville, Bobbie (Bob) Freitag of Pittsford, N.Y. and Margie Lechowicz (Rick Lazzari) of Aurora, Illinois. She is also survived by her four loving grandchildren, Kristina and Jeffrey Blough, Gregory and Emily Freitag; her sister, Anne Barone of Cheswick, Pa.; and her brother, Fred Zendarski of Lawrenceville, Ga.; as well as several nieces and nephews. Eleanore was an active member of St. Ann's Church in Ashland, the Catholic Daughters of America, Suburban General Hospital Women's Auxiliary, the Polish Arts League of Pittsburgh, the Polish American Society of Virginia, the VFW Auxiliary in Mechanicsville, and she was an honorary initiate of Chi Omega sorority. Eleanore's life and faith will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, May 26, at St. Stanislaus Kostka Church in Pittsburgh, with interment at Christ Our Redeemer Cemetery in Pittsburgh. A memorial service will be held at St. Ann's Church at a later date. The family requests that donations in Eleanore's memory be made to St. Ann's Church Haiti Fund, the Women's Memorial Foundation in Washington, D.C., or a charity of choice. Emory Joseph (JOE), 58, of Blacksburg, went home to be with his Savior Friday, May 21, 2010, at Montgomery Regional Hospital. He was born in Chester, S.C., on January 17, 1952. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1974, and received his Ph.D. in 1992 from VPI and SU. He served the Lord in China for 10 years, and returned to teach at Radford University for six years. Joe was a member of Blacksburg Christian Fellowship. He is survived by his wife, Ruth B. She was born Jan. 30, 1938 to the late Walter and Hattie Goodman. Eunice was a member of New Mount Olive AME Church, Chesapeake. She was a 1956 graduate of G.W. Carver High School, Chesapeake. She also attended CUNY at Baruch and Tidewater Community College. Eunice was employed as a test examiner for the Office of Personnel Management for a number of years and retired from Cox Enterprises as a senior sales representative. She was preceded in death by her husband the late Frank M. Powell and a sister, Betty G. Buffalow. Her precious memory will always remain with her loving children, Joey P. Powell of Chesapeake and Sharon D. Powell of Atlanta; sisters, Mayrose Moon, Arlonia Taylor Johnson, Marchetta Smith and Veora (Hiawatha) Harding; brothers, Walter L. Goodman and retired Col. Frederick Wyatt III NORFOLK - Fredrick B. "Rick" Wyatt III died May 21, 2010 at home surrounded by his family. He was born in Norfolk, the son of Antoinette Bisese Wyatt and the late Fred B. Wyatt Jr. Rick was a graduate of Granby High School. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a field engineer with Bell Atlantic with 33 years of service. Rick was preceded in death by a brother, Steve L. Wyatt. Survivors include his wife Dian, his son, Frederick "Ricky" Wyatt IV and his wife Jennifer; his daughter, Michele Wyatt and her partner Shelly Meister; and two grandchildren, RJ and Logan Wyatt. Rick is also survived by a brother, Russ E. Wyatt and his wife Jennie; two sisters, Jennie W. Gwaltney and her husband Al, Sherry W. Hill and her husband, Richard a sister-in-law, Carol Wyatt; many nieces and nephews who loved him very much. He was an avid car enthusiast who loved to ride his Harley with his children and good friends. He enjoyed being at the beach surrounded by all of his brothers and sisters and all of those who shared his love of the outdoors. His passion for living will be missed by all who loved him. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joan Sweeney Hicks; son, Gabriel "Chip" Hicks Jr. (Denise) of Raleigh, N.C.; daughter, Kimberley Wiseman (Tim) of Chesterfield; son, Michael Hicks of Richmond; his father, Andrew "Sonny" Hicks Jr. of Stafford County; three brothers, Tate Hicks of Caroline County, Wes "BB" Hicks of Richmond and Andy "Ezzie" Hicks III of Stafford County; grandchildren, Scotty, Zach and Storm Wiseman, Drew, Kate and Ava Hicks; step grandchildren, Casey and Taylor Manning. He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret Purks Hicks. Gabe was a 1959 graduate of Caroline High School in Caroline County. He received his B.S. degree from Lynchburg College and Master's from the University of Tennessee. Gabe taught and coached for 36 years in Chesterfield County Schools. He became the head football coach at Midlothian High School and later at Matoaca High School. He loved football and helped many young men obtain scholarships to college. He enjoyed being a great "Poppy" to his grandchildren. After retirement, Gabe loved to fish and was never happier than when reeling in the big fish with his buddies. Garnett Irene Lawrence Tyree Gerland, 79, of Chamblissburg, entered her Lord's heavenly garden on Saturday, May 22, 2010. She had recently been a resident of The Berkshire in Vinton and Loyalton Assisted Living of Roanoke. Garnett was born on December 29, 1930, daughter of the late Noah and Vida Conner Lawrence and grew up in Check, Va. As a young woman, Garnett moved to Roanoke and worked first in Katie's Ice Cream Parlor and then as a seamstress. After getting married, she moved to Chamblissburg where she resided until becoming ill in 2007. Garnett enjoyed sewing and gardening, but her greatest pleasure was in caring for all of her grandchildren as they grew up. Garnett was a special lady and will be missed by all who had the pleasure to know her., She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, James W. (Bill) Tyree, second husband, Frank Gerland, brother, Allen Lawrence, sisters, Dorothy Radford and Mary Saunders and daughter, Dreama Wilkes. She is survived by a brother, Raymond Lawrence and wife, Opal; sister, Reba Jones and husband, Marvin; sister, Ilene Lawrence; daughter, Vicki Brown and husband, Johnny; granddaughter, Misty Smith-Klein and husband, Glenn; granddaughter, Heather Robtison and husband, Anthony; grandson, Adrian Smith, grandson Christian Wilkes and fiancée, Jessica Guilliams; great-grandsons, Ashton Klein and Evan Klein; and great-granddaughter (due in August) Emily Robtison. Mr. Hubbard was a member of Surfside United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Murrells Inlet Masonic Lodge 368, he was a 32nd Degree member of the Scottish Rite in Charleston, member of Omar Shrine Temple in Mt. Pleasant, and Kingfisher Local Shrine Club. Mr. Hubbard was predeceased by his wife and five sisters. Survivors include a son, Wilson Hubbard of Surfside Beach; and sister, Mamie McClenny of Farmville, Va. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews. Jim graduated from Hopewell High School in Hopewell, Va., and moved with his family to Virginia. Beach in 1973. He worked as a mechanical draftsman and later as a mechanical designer. He relocated to Tampa, Fla., where he met and married his wife. In Florida, he worked as a mechanical designer with a recent promotion and relocation to Fort Lauderdale. Jim celebrated his 55th birthday on March 2. Jim was preceded in death by his younger brother, Frederick "Rick" Watkins. Jeannette Davis Crowley, 90, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Monday, May 17, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Jerome Arthur Crowley (Jerry). JACKSON, John Vance Jr., 85, of Farmville, retired Virginia Commissioner of Litter Control, died May 20, 2010 in Southside Community Hospital after a short illness. He was born January 19, 1925 in Wake Forest, N.C. to the late John Vance and Macie Ray Jackson. He served in the US Army and was stationed in Germany during World War II. Graduating from North Carolina State University with a degree in Forest Management in 1952, he worked for the Virginia Division of Forestry for 25 years. He then transferred to the newly formed Division of Litter Control from which he retired as State Commissioner. As such, he created and implemented a model program to prevent littering in Virginia and continued building this department for nine years. John was President of the Farmville Lions Club. He served as an Elder in the Farmville Presbyterian Church and on the Administrative Board of the Zebulon Methodist Church. He loved photography, particularly of wild flowers and birds and loved identifying plants. He enjoyed traveling, especially in the National Parks, Canada, Alaska and the Eastern Shore. As an enthusiastic gardener, John was often asked to give talks to Garden Clubs and other groups. He enjoyed reading with a focus on History, and was keenly interested in listening to music of all different artists. John was very passionate in his profession, with his family, with his hobbies and with anything that was meaningful to him. He was generous with his time and his love and was admired and respected by all who knew him. In addition to his wife of nearly 60 years, Lazelle Jackson of Farmville, John is survived by one sister, Margie Jackson Wynne (Alfred) of Wake Forest, N.C.; four nieces, Kristi Jarnagin (Spencer) of Wilmington, N.C., Jill Lobo (Patrick) of Nyack, N.Y., Phyllis Raper (Jim) of Rock Hill, S.C., and Donna Wynne of San Francisco, Calif.; and four great-nieces, Luci Lobo, Anna and Samantha Jarnagin and Allison Raper. John David Steele VIRGINIA BEACH - John David Steele, 89, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2010. He was retired from WTKR as a television control engineer after many years with the station. He was born in Saginaw, Mich., and grew up in Bay Port, and was the son of the late Dora Lenore King Steel and Judson Grant Steele. He was a very proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Steele attended the Norfolk division of The College of William and Mary. He was a very active member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, a member of the American Legion Post 204, and coached Little League baseball and girls softball for many years in Virginia Beach. He was a very active volunteer in his community and was proud to be a blood donor for the American Red Cross. Joseph M. Marks, 90, of Roanoke, Va., died Friday, May 21, 2010, in Roanoke. He was born in 1920 in Knoxville, Tenn. He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee. He lived most of his life in Lexington, Ky., where he raised a family while holding a series of management positions in local businesses. Joe was an office manager for New York Life when he retired at the age of 80. His passions were the theater and opera. Joe was involved with Studio Players, Lexington's amateur theater company, as an actor and board member for more than 50 years. His love of opera covered eight decades and made him an expert on the works of Wagner and the great performances of the 20th century. Since moving to Roanoke in 2008, he did not miss a production of Opera Roanoke. Joe Marks was a member of Temple Emanuel. He was predeceased by his longtime companion, Norman Parks. He is survived by son, Jeffrey Marks and daughterin-law, Roxanne Marks, of Roanoke; and son, Neil Marks and daughter-in-law, Pam Marks, of Oxford, Ohio; three grandchildren; and one greatgrandchild. Julia A. Bristow NORFOLK - Julia Atwater Bristow, artist, writer and founder and first president of The Butterfly Society of Virginia, died May 18, 2010. A native and resident of Norfolk and a twelfth generation Virginian, she was the daughter of Arthur Brantly Bristow and Julia Maude Prichard Bristow. For many years she maintained a second home in Nags Head, then in Virginia Beach, and more recently in Quinby on the Eastern Shore. A graduate of Maury High School, Ms. Bristow attended Sweet Briar College and was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of The College of William and Mary. She worked for the Navy for 30 years as a writer/ editor, principally at the Naval Safety Center. At the time of her retirement, she was the editor of the Navy's and the Air Force's occupational Safety and health magazine, Lifeline. She edited the Virginia Butterfly Bulletin for its first five years. She was in charge of books on the committee which established the Botanical Garden Gift Shop, reorganized the Fred Heutte Library at the Botanical Garden, and was in charge of its volunteers for a number of years. A book reviewer for The Virginian-Pilot and the Botanical Garden Society Bulletin for many years, Ms. Bristow also wrote and painted for both Ford Times Magazine and the Ford Times Cookbooks. She travelled widely in the United States and abroad. At various times in her long life, she was an officer or board member in Tidewater Artists, Norfolk chapter William and Mary Alumni Association, Irene Leache Memorial, Norfolk Botanical Garden Society, where she originated the society's annual Gardeners in their Gardens Tour, and was its first chairman, English Speaking Union, Hermitage Museum Auxiliary, Friends of the Norfolk Public Library, and friend of the Swem Library at William and Mary. She was also a member of The Norfolk Society of Arts, Friends of the Jean Outland Chrysler Library where she volunteered for many years, Virginia chapter of the Nature Conservancy, Virginia Native Plant Society, Virginia Coast Reserve, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Elizabeth River Project, Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Jamestown Society. A professional watercolorist, Ms. Bristow exhibited in many juried shows in Virginia and elsewhere, including the Audubon Artists Annual in New York and the Painting of the Year and the Southeastern shows in Atlanta. Her work won many awards and was featured in a two-person show and a three- person in the Virginia Museum in Richmond. She held a certificate of distinction and purchase prize from a Virginia Museum Biennial and purchase prizes from the Valentine Museum in Richmond and then Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences. Her paintings are in both private and corporate collections. Ms. Bristow is survived by two nephews, John B. Bristow of Dallas, Texas and Thomas B. Bristow of Alhambra, Calif. and their families; her sister-in-law, Mrs. A.B. Bristow Jr. of Orinda, Calif.; and a number of cousins. According to her wishes, no services are planned. Memorials may be made to the Bristow Butterfly Garden at the Norfolk Botanical Garden, the Julia Atwater Bristow Scholarship fund at the Norfolk Foundation, or a charity of choice. |

KIRK, Katherine Anna, went home to be with her Father in Heaven on May 20, 2010. She was preceded in death by her mother, DeeDee Kirk; and brother, Bruce Kirk. She is survived by her father, Bill Kirk and stepmother, Vicky; her brother, Fleet (Kathryn); sister-in-law, Donna; and six nieces and nephews, Campbell, Emily, Tyler, Molly, Ben and Hunter; and one great-nephew, Graham. Kathy was a lifelong member of St. Giles Presbyterian Church and had sung in the choir there for many years. She spent several years as a missionary for Youth with a Mission in Europe and was retired from Dominion Virginia Power. Kathy graduated from the University of Richmond in 1973 and taught at Trinity Episcopal School. A celebration of her life will be held at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 5200 Grove Ave., on Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11 a.m. Interment at Hollywood Cemetery to be private. FISHER, Lillian Frances Deal Jones was granted her angel wings on the early morning of May 22, 2010. She is now forever at home with the Lord Savior in which she served faithfully for 75 years. She was given by the Lord to Estelle Champion and George Deal in Warren County, N.C. on December 19, 1935. She was preceded in death by her first husband, James T. Jones Jr. "Bill"; and her second husband, Earl Fisher. "Mama" is survived by her three daughters, Kay Jensen, Sharon Dardoufas and Mitzi Sizemore. "Nana" is also survived by her grandchildren, Jillian and George Dardoufas, Nathan Schold, Mason Sizemore, Kameron and Kristen Jensen; and lastly her great-grandson, Landon Jensen. Francis graduated from John Graham High School in Warrenton, N.C. in 1955. After one momentous slow dance, she fell in love, and soon married her soulmate, Bill Jones. Entrusted by the Lord, Frances and Bill shared a loving, caring and faithful companionship with one another. As best friends, and man and wife, they devoted their lives to loving and caring for their three daughters and grand- children. The memories of Frances are blessed by the Christian graces displayed in everything that she did. She was a faithful member of her church and her 23 years of work at Deluxe Check Printers. We gather to remember Lillian Fisher, and celebrate that she is now healed and reunited with all of her loved ones. A memorial service will be held at Falling Creek Baptist Church on Sunday, May 23, from 1 to 2 p.m. Frances will return to her home in Warrenton, North Carolina to be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Bill. March 9, 1936 – May 18, 2010 In loving memory of the mother, grandmother, and sister who was always helping someone else. Lola was born in Botetourt County to Dennie E. and Annie Mae (Grubbs) Goad. She is survived by her siblings, William (Joyce), David (Joyce), Mary Wyrick, Warren (Nancy), Arthur (Carol), Wayne, Doris Walker (Hurley), Roger (Margaret), Steve (Treedy), and Joyce Ann Goldston (Bill). As a young woman, Lola worked for the telephone company. In later years she counted miles on her pedometer as a salesperson with Grand Home Furnishings and the Room Store. Throughout her life, Lola was a caregiver for young, elderly, family, and friends, accepting nothing in return. Her independent spirit and loving heart will be missed by her daughter and son-in-law, Tara and Tom Frazier; and the grandchildren who knew her too briefly, Joseph and Anna. She is survived by her husband, George Cohen of Palm City; children, David and Lee Ann Lester of Naples, Florida, Rusty and Nancy Lester of Richmond, Virginia; and grandchildren, Aaron Lester of Naples, Florida, and Geoffrey and Erin Lester of Charlotte, North Carolina. In Danville, Virginia, Mrs. Cohen's previous residence for more than 40 years, she was a longtime leading retail merchant in that community. She, with her husband, Nathan Lester, who predeceased her in 1983, owned and operated Frances Kahn, a leading southern Virginia women's specialty store. Stores under the same name are now owned and operated by her son Rusty Lester throughout the state in Richmond, Roanoke and Virginia Beach. A native of Princess Anne County, she was the daughter of the late Gertrude and Audie Fisher Sr. She graduated from Old Oceana High School and she retired from Fuel Feed Building Supply. She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church. She was predeceased by her adoring husband, Knaus Minton and her brothers, Audie Fisher Jr., Marshall Fisher, and her sisters, Alice Cherrigan and Lucille Fisher. She leaves to honor and cherish her memory her devoted sister, Lillian Edge and her husband Norman; her daughters, Beth Decker and her husband Tom, and Norma Resczynski and her husband Chessie; her beloved grandsons, Gabriel O'Gorman, Christopher Decker and his wife Megan, Michael, Jason and Ryan Decker; six great-grandchildren; granddog, Baylee; and many nieces and nephews. The family gives a special thanks to her niece Linda Phillips and the staff of Sentara Village Assisted Living at Rosemont Road. Marjorie loved being a "Beach girl" and would spend many hours talking about growing up by the ocean. May she always have sand in her shoes. Born 1930 on Valentine Plantation near Lockport, La., she was the daughter of Warren J. Harang Sr. of New Orleans, La., and Winifred E. Foret Harang of Thibodaux, La. The youngest of five children, Mary Lee graduated from Lockport High School and attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. As the wife of Wally J. Picou, M.D., of Houma, La., she assisted his medical practice and was a member of the Terrebonne Parish Women's Medical Auxiliary. The family moved to Virginia Beach in 1970 when Dr. Picou joined the emergency room staff at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk. Her parents, husband, and four siblings, Warren J. Harang Jr., Winifred Harang Kozelsky, Donald F. Harang, and Catherine Harang Gouaux, preceded her in death. She is survived by her four daughters, Rebecca A. Picou (spouse of Thomas J. Hamilton) of Fairfax, Va., Mary Lee "Tita" Picou of Virginia Beach, Robin A. Picou of Orange Beach, Ala., and Lori A. Picou of Los Angeles, Calif.; along with two granddaughters, Natalia E. Mary Helen Thomas NORFOLK - Mary Helen Thomas, 85, of Densmore Place, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on May 22, 2010. She was a native of Virginia. She was the daughter of the late J. Moody and Rena Holland and predeceased by her husband, Ellis G. Thomas Sr. and her son, Moody Baloos Thomas Sr. Left to cherish her memory are son, Ellis G. Thomas Jr.; two sisters, Gloria Norris of Norfolk, Lois Koester of Corpus Christi, Texas; seven grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; three nephews; and one niece. Mary Helen was instrumental in the development of the water safety program in the Tidewater area for 52 years, working through the YWCA and the American Red Cross. She received many awards throughout her career and is honored by having the Mary Helen Thomas Racial Justice Award named after her for having broken down the racial barriers within the swimming community in the 1960s. The funeral will be held Tuesday, May 25, at 10:30 a.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Burial will follow immediately at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Born in Richlands, Va., she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Alice Joyce Vance. Oscar B. Ferebee Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Oscar B. Ferebee Jr., 92, husband of Sandra Warren Ferebee, set sail on his final voyage May 21, 2010 after leading a full and vibrant life. O.B., the son of the late Oscar Benson Ferebee and Florence Swingley Ferebee, was born in Norfolk, Dec. 17, 1917. He graduated from Maury High School in the Class of 1936. He was predeceased by his daughter, Florence Ann Ferebee Pope and five brothers, Joseph Nelson Ferebee, Emory Cook Ferebee, Francis Kenyon Ferebee, David Swingley Ferebee and John Terrel Ferebee. Survivors include his wife, Sandra Warren Ferebee of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Mary Keys "Keysie" Ferebee Maddox of Spartanburg, S.C., and her husband Joe and Amy Elizabeth Ferebee Supan of Norfolk; as well as his sister, Ann Elizabeth Ferebee of New York, N.Y. Seven grandchildren also survive him: Alexandra Page "Lexa" Pope, Oscar "Ferebee" Tunno, Sara Miles Pope Agelasto, Joshua Paul "Josh" Supan, Finn Michael Supan, Cyrus Keys Maddox and Joseph "McGee" Maddox. O.B. joined the Navy as a second class storekeeper on Dec. 19, 1941. In July of 1942 he joined the United States Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet and later became a second lieutenant in the United States Army Coast Artillery Corps. He returned home in March 1947 as a captain, C.A.C. O.B. joined Goodman Segar Hogan Real Estate that spring. In June 1950 he joined the United States Marine Corps Reserve as a captain. Two weeks later his unit was called up for active duty in Korea. In 1952, after the Korean War, O.B. returned home and back to work for Goodman Segar Hogan Inc. as a residential salesman, working mostly in the Norfolk area. Soon after returning home, the Goodman Segar Hogan partners formed a new company, Goodman Segar Hogan Residential Sales Corporation and O.B. became the managing partner. The company and the area grew very rapidly and by the mid-1970s GSH Residential had 12 offices from the Oceanfront to Williamsburg. O.B. received many awards from the Realtor Organization and The Sales and Marketing Executives International. He was also very active in the formation of and the work of the Real Estate Information Network. For more than 50 years, he was active in the company and the real estate industry before retiring in 2002. O.B. was an avid golfer and yachtsman. He was a member of the Princess Anne Country Club, the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and was a past Commodore of the Cavalier Golf and Yacht Club. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 25, at First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach by Pastor Gary W. Combs. Page Rudd Perkins of Fork Union, Virginia, died on Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at her home, Brides Hill., Born on April 29, 1912, in Bon Air, Virginia, Mrs. Perkins was the daughter of Montelle Banister Rudd and Page (Newman) Rudd., Raised in Bon Air, Mrs. Perkins was a graduate of St. Catherine's School in Richmond and Hollins College, Class of 1933. She was a teacher at Elkhart (Manchester) School in Chesterfield County and St. Catherine's School in Richmond., She married William Beckwith Perkins from Fork Union, Virginia, in 1936, in Manila, in the Philippines, and during the next 24 years his Naval career took them to China, Panama, Hawaii, and Naval bases in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, New London, Connecticut, and Newport, Rhode Island. Twice he was assigned to the N.R.O.T.C unit at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. When Admiral Perkins returned from the United States Navy, they lived in Hinsdale, Illinois, for 10 years, then moved to Bon Air, Virginia and eventually returned to Fork Union. She moved to Richmond 76 years ago with her husband, who was relocating his family's business as hat manufacturers. She was predeceased by her five brothers and sisters, Irving Cohen, Tillie Dubin, Dave Cohen, Sarah Friedes, and Hymie Cohen. She is survived by her four children, Jane Joel Knox and her husband, Joe of Richmond, Barbara Pesin of New York, Carole Weinstein and her husband, Marcus of Richmond, and Richard Milstein and his partner, Dennis Aquino of New York. Survivors also include four grandchildren in Richmond, Andrew Joel and his wife, Shirley, Jan Starnes and her husband, Jim, David Joel and his wife, Mary Ann, Allison Weinstein and her husband, Ivan Jecklin; and one grandson, Matthew Pesin of Maryland. He was an Episcopalian. Richard spent most of his naval career in Virginia Beach. He received his Naval aviator wings in Pensacola, Fla., in 1955. This proud fighter pilot served aboard many carriers from Norfolk including USS Independence, Saratoga and the Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was awarded several prestigious medals including the National Defense Service Medal, five Air Medals, Gallentry Cross Ribbon Bar, Republic of Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Vietnam). The fighter squadrons he served on included VF 43, VF 11, VF 32, VF 174, Training Squadron VT 23, Tacron 22, and his final tour of duty with the Nuclear Weapons Training and Inspection Group. Richard retired as lieutenant commander from the Navy after 22 years of dedicated service, and was employed with QED Systems for 12 years after his retirement from the U.S. Navy. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary Ellen Doherty; two sons, Christopher Spangler Doherty and R. Scott Doherty; daughter-in- law, Lilly Beth Doherty; a grandson, R. Scott Doherty Jr.; and his beloved pet, Smokey. The family wishes to offer special thanks to Sentara Hospice, Virginia Oncology and Radiation Oncology for their loving care during Richard's long courageous battle with cancer. Robert C. Branham CHESAPEAKE - Captain Robert C. "Bob" Branham, retired U.S. Coast Guard, 82, passed away Friday, May 21, 2010, at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Charlottesville, Va., Jan. 20, 1928, the son of Robert L. and Lessie S. Branham. He graduated as valedictorian of the Broadus Wood High School, Class of 1945. and enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1946. He later attended the Coast Guard Academy and received his commission as an ensign in 1952. During his 36 years of service, Capt. Branham qualified to fly 18 different types of fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters and flew aviation missions that spanned from the North Slope of Alaska to Antarctica and from the Mediterranean westward to the Bering Sea. He was an avid woodworker who loved to design and make things for family and friends. He also enjoyed playing golf, fishing, and participating in alumni events with his Academy classmates. He was a charter member of the Ancient Order of the Pterodactyl and loved to get together with fellow Coast Guard aviators at related events. After retiring in 1982, he served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross, and he and his wife were actively involved in both the Auxiliary and Volunteer Services at Chesapeake General Hospital. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Barbara; his sons, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Steve Branham and retired U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Bruce Branham; and three grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 27, at Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake, VA 23322. The Rev. Thomas Mercer will officiate. Interment will follow at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. May 23, 2010 Robert Clyde Lawson Sr., 89, of Stuart, and formerly of Martinsville, died Friday, May 21, 2010. He was born Aug. 1, 1920, in Patrick County to Samuel Tilton Lawson and Pencie Woodall Lawson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Lucinda Mabel Lawson; one son, Ronald Wayne Lawson Sr.; three sisters, Lucy McHone, Gladys Wilson and Lottie Purdy; and three brothers, Raymond, Harry and Harvey Lawson. He was a graduate of Stuart High School. He was a World War II veteran serving as a staff sergeant in China, Burma and India with the Army's 988 Signal Service Battalion. He retired from DuPont with 38 years of service. Lawson served on the Board of Directors of the Martinsville and Henry County United Way and was President of the Martinsville Recreation Association. He received the Volunteer Award from the Virginia Parks and Recreation Society in honor of his service. He was a member of Kearfott Memorial Baptist Church and was an ordained visitation minister. He was active in the Henry County Baptist Association. While residing at the Landmark Center in Stuart where he spent his later years, he served as a volunteer for both the center residents and staff. Surviving is a son, Robert Lawson of Roanoke; a daughter, Janet Gropman of Radford; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews. A service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Norris Funeral Services and Crematory in Martinsville with the Rev. Gary Edwards officiating. Robert A. Cabotaje VIRGINIA BEACH - Robert Aguada Cabotaje, 68, departed this earth May 19, 2010. Bobby left Pangasinan, Philippines in 1959. A dedicated patriot with a strong work ethic, he retired from the Navy a chief petty officer after 28 years of service and worked another 20 years for Charleston County and the Magistrate's Office as a police and security officer. A storyteller with a twinkle in his eye, he made friends everywhere he went. He was a fine carpenter and an animal lover with a wonderful sense of humor. Left to remember him fondly are his wife of 44 years, Joanne; his son, Curt (Kim); grandson, Christian (Tegan and Lily); extended family Rolly, Betty, Ernie, Zaldy, Janice, Ruby, Cheryl and their families. Robert L. Geurtsen VIRGINIA BEACH - Robert Louis Geurtsen, 63, passed away May 18, 2010. Mr. Geurtsen was born Nov. 30, 1946 in Milwaukee, Wis. to the late Louis A. Geurtsen and Joan C. Walker. Robert E. Rhodes FRANKLIN - Robert Earl Rhodes, 71, retired sergeant from the Franklin Police Department, went to be with the Lord May 19, 2010 at Southampton Memorial Hospital. He had been sick on and off since 2008. Robert was born in Isle of Wight County on July 27, 1938 to the late Edward Curtis Rhodes and Minnie Spivey Rhodes and was a member of South Quay Baptist Church where he was raised as a child. Robert was a member of the American Legion, the FOP No. 56, Franklin/ Southampton, and a charter member of the Delaware Hunt Club. Robert was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to watch his garden grow and give most of it away. Robert served his country in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1964. Then, he joined the Franklin Police Department where he served his community for 34 years and eight months until he retired in 1998. Survivors include his beloved wife of 46 years, Maggie Everett Rhodes; his daughter, Teresa R. Unser and husband, Jerome "Jerry"; and his pride and joy, Jerome and Kimberly Unser; his twin grandchildren who will miss their granddaddy greatly; a sister, Virginia Mae Byrum of Suffolk; three brothers, James W. Rhodes and Richard Rhodes, both of Hopewell, and William Rhodes of Zuni; and Robert's two best friends, Norman "Punk" Lankford and William "Bill" Edwards. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home with the Rev. Wayne Gardner officiating. Sandy Dennis DeHart CAMDEN - Sandy Dennis DeHart, 66, of Camden County, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Mrs. DeHart was born and raised in Hampton. She never could swim a stroke, but that did not stop her from enjoying the surrounding water as she grew up on The Peninsula. As a young girl, she often splashed along the banks of the James River, playing and trapping crabs. As she grew older, she learned to appreciate the scenery surrounding the river, the Chesapeake Bay, and the ocean. She was especially captivated by lighthouses, twinkling harbors, driftwood, seashells, and boats of every kind. In high school, Mrs. DeHart, honed her amazing skills as an artist and illustrator. In college, her talent flourished and she went on to work for NASA as a draftsman. In 1966, she had her first of five children and soon after, she began working from home so she could work and raise a family. As an accomplished illustrator and successful business owner, she had run a sign business out of her home for the last 40 years. Mrs. DeHart is known in the community by many as "Sandy the Sign Lady." She enjoyed helping others, and participated in many community events by donating free signs and art work. Mrs. DeHart's greatest joy in life was her family. Our hearts are heavy with her loss and she will be remembered for the loving mother, generous grandmother, adoring wife and kind sister that she was. Mrs. DeHart was preceded in death by her grandparents, Richard C. Topping and Pearl V. Topping. She is survived by her husband, Gwen DeHart. They were childhood sweethearts who rekindled their loved as adults and married just four and a half years ago. Other survivors include five children: Tod "Bru" Brubaker and wife Shelly of Lexington, Ky., Debbie Cioffi of Newport News, Lisa Tarrants and husband Tom of Camden, N.C., Tricia Phillips and husband Madison of Poplar Branch, N.C., Nicki Mansfield and husband Jay of Aydlett, N.C.; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Suelle McKellar Swartz, 98, of Roanoke, Va., and Titusville, Fla., passed away in Titusville on May 21, 2010. She was born on November 11, 1911, in Homerville Ga. She was preceded in death by her parents, Idus Eugene and Ann Belle McCrory McKellar, of Macon, Ga.; her sister, Addie Rie Baird, of Macon, Ga.; and her husband, William P. Swartz Jr., of Roanoke, Va., and Titusville, Fla. She is survived by their four children, William P. Swartz III, of Titusville, Fla., Anne Swartz Simmons, of Front Royal, Va., C. Eugene Swartz, of Wirtz, Va., and Suelle Marie Swartz, of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren; and greatgrandchildren. Mrs. Swartz was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of Wesleyan College, Macon, Ga., and a lifetime member of Phi Kappa Phi. She organized the first Naturalization Ceremony in the Roanoke Court under the sponsorship of the Roanoke Junior Woman's Club and served as President of the Club. She was active in civic organizations, The Roanoke Symphony, Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and American Association of University Women. Due to her interest in genealogy she became a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution, The Colonial Dames of the MCVII Century and The United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was an active member and teacher at Raleigh Court United Methodist Church in Roanoke and Indian River United Methodist Church in Titusville and a life member of the Gideon Auxiliary. Thomas Bernard Columbus, 91, of Elfrida, Arizona, our beloved husband, father and grandfather died on Friday, April 30, 2010, at the University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona., He was born on February 23, 1919, in Buffalo, New York. Through his life he showed strength of moral character and the qualities of an individual who possessed resilience, deep faith and a gentle spirit., He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lois Johnsen Columbus from Peoria, Illinois; and his three children, Ann Kelley and Dickie Duckett of Middletown, Maryland, Jill Columbus and Nicholas Reed of Westford, Massachusetts, and Marc John Columbus and his wife, Terry Columbus, of Charlottesville, Virginia; and his three grandchildren, Kip Kelley, Jillian Columbus and Cole Columbus., He graduated from high school at the age of 16 and played in the school band. Later in his life he loved to play the piano by ear never having had a lesson. He then attended the University of Wyoming on a track scholarship for three years., He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and went through initial training in Chickasha, Oklahoma. He served in the Air Corp during World War II. As a 1st Lieutenant, he was a pilot and navigator stationed in China, Burma and India and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal. His combat group received citations issued in the name of the President of the United States "for outstanding performance of duty in action during the period of January 14 until March 1, 1942". After service to his country, he received a law degree from the University of Wisconsin., He started his career in insurance in 1950, as a field claims representative and divisional superintendent of claims for State Farm Insurance. As an attorney for State Farm he had offices in Bloomington, Illinois, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Westmont, Illinois. In 1960, he became Vice-President of the American Mercury Company and was ultimately Chief Operating Officer. In 1961, he was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. Between 1966 and 1981, he was employed by the Colonial Penn Group in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as the Senior Vice-President of several of their subsidiaries as well as becoming Director of Litigation for the group. He was appointed Vice-President of SAI Group Inc. as well as Managing Director of Preferred Assurance Company Ltd., a United Kingdom joint venture of SAI group and a Netherlands company., He returned to Arizona where he and his wife had a pecan ranch where they spent many happy years together., Tom was a man of quick wit, firm principles and integrity who believed in honesty and truth. He believed in standing up for and supporting others. His exemplary work ethic and belief in the intrinsic good in all people set him apart from other individuals. People who worked with him defined his qualities of intelligence, loyalty, good nature, and a man always having sincere personal interests in others. He valued his life long relationships. Tom's easy smile, kind and generous heart brightened our lives. Vance Orpheus Bright Jr., 81, of Palmyra, died on Saturday, May 15, 2010., He was born on January 19, 1929, in Morganton, North Carolina, the son of Vance O. and Isabelle Amelie Salvageot Bright., A retired naval architect/ engineer with the United States Department of the Navy, Mr. Bright was a 1952 graduate of the Newport News Apprentice School, where he worked for 17 years. During his long career, Mr. Bright worked in the design and construction of several United States naval vessels including several aircraft carriers and the ocean liner "The United States"., He is survived by his wife, Mary Frances Girton Bright of Palmyra; two daughters, Cheryl Frances Bright of Falls Church, Virginia, and Mary Lynne Bright of Palmyra; one son, W. Mrs. Velma Martin Sowers, 102, of Hillsville, Va., passed away Friday, May 21, 2010, at the Trinity Mission of Hillsville. Mrs. Sowers was born November 23, 1907, in Carroll County, Va., to the late Robert Lee and Minnie Marshall Martin. She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Rev. Walter Christa Sowers; a son, Alva Loy Sowers; one sister; and eight brothers. She is survived by two daughters and son-in-law, Bonnie S. Kimble and husband, Coy, and Kathleen S. Melton and husband, Earl, all of Hillsville; three grandchildren and spouses, Tammie and Jim Leath, of Galax, Greg Kimble, of Woodlawn, and Kathi M. and Steve Hunter, of Spring Grove, Va.; greatgrandson, Tyler Kimble; twins greatgranddaughters, Trystin and Teagan Kimble; two stepgreatgrandsons and spouses, Evan Julia Hunter, and Eric and Liz Hunter; and by two stepgreatgreatgrandsons, Ryan and Ethan Hunter. May 23, 2010 W. "Donnie" Cundiff, 67, of 650 Edgewood Drive, Stanleytown, died Friday, May 21, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was born in Franklin County on March 29, 1943, to Virgie Smith Cundiff of Bassett and Jessie Raymond Cundiff. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Myra Kay Cundiff Jones. Cundiff served with the Army in Vietnam and worked for more than 40 years with J.R. Cundiff Excavation as a bookkeeper/truck driver. He was a charter member of Landmark Baptist Church. He was a member of the Rocky Mount Masonic Lodge, was a Shriner and a life member of VFW Post 4637. Surviving in addition to his mother are a son, Michael Cundiff of High Point, N.C.; a brother, Jesse Robert "Bobby" Cundiff of Martinsville; and one grandson. The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Landmark Baptist Church with the Rev. J.D. Harmon officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. today and the family will receive friends there for one hour before the service. Wanda Mae Mullins BRISTOL, Tenn. Wanda Mae Mullins, age 57, passed away on May 21, 2010, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. She was born in Sullivan County, Tenn., a daughter to the late Burley and Pearl O'Neal Eades and was a lifelong resident of Bristol Tennessee. Wanda received her degree from Tennessee High School and also earned a degree in cosmetology. She was employed by F. W. Woolworth and Fingerhut. She was a dedicated caregiver for a number of years and a member of the ladies auxiliary Post No. 6975. Along with her parents she was preceded in death second husband, Terry Troxel and his beloved mother Katherine "Izzy" Troxel; mother-in-law, Edith Mullins; brothers, J.D. Eads and wife Viola, George Eades and wife Gladys; sister, Marie Rymer; sister-in-law, Peggy Eades; brother-in-law, Vic Hopkins; and nephew Ricky Artiburn. May 23, 2010 A funeral for Wilburn Dale Essary, 75, of Stuart, who died May 16, 2010, was held Friday at the First Baptist Church of Bassett with the Rev. Lew Bennett officiating. Burial was in Fairystone Baptist Church cemetery with military rites conducted by the Patrick County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. Members of the Fairystone Volunteer Fire Department, of which Essary was a member, were pallbearers. The Ladies Auxiliary at the fire department served as honorary pallbearers. COX, William Henry, M.D., 94, of Richmond, widower of Doris Swain Cox, passed away Friday, May 14, 2010. He is survived by three children, George Paul Cox, Nancy Cox Vaughan and her husband, Ernest C. Vaughan, and Susan Cox Lane and her husband, Feldman E. Lane, and five grandchildren, Christian Epps Vaughan, William Ernest Vaughan, Charles Harwood Vaughan, Hillary Cox Lane, and Amy Bennett Lane. Born in Franklin, Va., Dr. Cox was a 1935 graduate of Suffolk High School. He graduated from VMI, class of 1939, and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. He graduated from the Medical College of Virginia and served in the Army Medical Corps and was discharged as Captain. Dr. Cox was board certified in obstetrics and gynecology. During World War II, he delivered countless babies while stationed at Ft. Sam Houston, Texas, Ft. Belvoir, Va., City Hospital in Baltimore, and Women's Hospital in Boston. Dr. Cox practiced OBGYN in Richmond for 30 years and during that time was Chief of Staff and Head of the Obstetrics Department at Richmond Memorial Hospital. He also had privileges at Retreat for the Sick, St. Mary's, St. Luke's, and Stuart Circle Hospital, where he delivered three generations of Richmond children. Throughout his career, he volunteered weekly at the Goochland Health Clinic. Dr. Cox was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church for over 50 years, a charter member of Suburban Sertoma Club and the Institute Society of VMI, a former member of the Board of Maymont, and a former member of The Country Club of Virginia and Deep Run Hunt Club. He was an avid horseman, fisherman, and hunter. Dr. Cox enjoyed traveling the world with his beloved wife, Doris. During his later years, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends at their river home in Tappahannock. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 11 at Westminster Canterbury. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 6000 Grove Ave., Richmond, Va. 23226, the VMI Foundation, or the Goochland County Nursing Scholarship, c/o Goochland High School. |

He was born July 17, 1938 to the late Florence and Walter Harmon in Newark, Md. William was a member of Calvary Revival Church, Norfolk and was a previous member of Calvary United Ministry Church, Berlin, Md. He was employed with BAE Systems for five years as a security officer. He is survived by his wife, Alice Harmon; two daughters, Theresa Dixon (Dechond) and Tabatha Harmon; one son, William P. "Juny" Harmon Jr.; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Adams; four sisters; one brother; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a host of other relatives and friends. William R. Harrell NORFOLK - William Robert "Bill" Harrell passed away May 21, 2010 in Fletcher, N.C., after a long fight with Alzheimer's disease. William, or Bill as everyone called him, was a native of South Norfolk. He served overseas in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of World War I. He retired from Hampton Roads Transit and was a member of Bethany Free Will Baptist Church in Norfolk. Bill was the son of the late Robert Lee and Pearl Marie Harrell and was also predeceased by his wife, Doris Faye Harrell; his brothers, James and Pete Harrell; and his son, Michael Harrell. Bill left behind a brother, Waverly Harrell of Chesapeake; three daughters, Joan Edwards, Brenda Lawrence, Teresa Sorey; four stepchildren, Tom Ferguson of Afton, Va., Gary Ferguson of Richmond, Va., Vicki Sumner of Arden, N.C., and Darlene Platt of San Diego; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren that will miss his so. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown on Tidewater Drive, Norfolk. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery following service.
