She is survived by her husband of 31 years, John Neblett Marriott; son, William Carlyle Marriott; and sister, Alberta Lindsey, all of Richmond, Va. Brenda attended R.P.I. (now the Virginia Commonwealth University) and was a librarian at Richmond Newspapers Incorporated for 15 years. She grew up at Calvary United Methodist Church, where she kept children in the nursery for many years. For the last 25 years she was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Ave., where a memorial service will be held Wednesday, July 7, at 11 a.m. followed by a reception. ESPOSITO, Dominick John "Nick," 84, of Glen Allen, died Saturday, July 3, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents, Luigi and Elisa Esposito; brothers, George and Salvatore Esposito; and his beloved son, Lewis Esposito. He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Nancy Esposito; his daughter, Georgia Esposito; stepdaughters, Lee Ann Orefice, Dee Ann Simon, Nancy H. Brown, Suzanne B. Hubbard; special niece and nephew, Elisa Persinger and Dominick Esposito and six grandchildren. At the age of 16, Nick joined the Navy. Upon the discovery of his true age, he was promptly sent home on a bus from California. At the age of 18, he joined the Army and fought in Okinawa, where he received a Purple Heart. He later reenlisted and served two more years in Japan as part of the Occupation Force. He was also a member of the V.F.W. Upon Nick's return from service, he enrolled in the University of Richmond, T.C. Williams School of Law using his G.I. Bill and graduated in 1953. His first job was with the Honorable Judge Robert R. Merhige Jr. who was also his mentor. He loved practicing law and retired at the age of 70. Nick was a true outdoorsman who loved to go fresh and salt water fishing, golfing and duck hunting with his longtime friend, Ivy Bradly. Perhaps one of the proudest moments in Nick's life took place in St. Louis, Mo. in 1982 when his beloved Labrador Retriever, Westwind Supernova Chief, a field champion and amateur field champion, won the title of "National Field Trial Champion" over 90 other participants. The family extends special thanks for their love and care to Dr. Martin Starkman and staff; caregiver, Kevin Hayes and Donna Bourne and the staff at Westport Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. A Memorial Mass will take place at 11 a.m., Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church, 4491 Springfield Road. BRUCE, Dr. J. Garnett Jr. 96, of Orange, died Saturday, July 3, 2010, at The Village at Gordon House in Gordonsville. He was born in Culpeper County, May 25, 1914, graduated from Culpeper High School in 1932, attended Hampden-Sydney College in a premedical program and graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School in 1940. During World War II, he was a physician with TVA during construction of Fontana Dam in western North Carolina. In 1942 he married Janet "Jan" Floyd. Following the war, he worked in Chattanooga, Tenn. delivering hundreds of babies and performing numerous surgeries in a grueling 90 hour workweek for a year and a half. He moved to Gordonsville in November of 1947 with his young wife and two children. Dr. Bruce was a physician serving the Orange County community for over 30 years until his retirement in 1979. He was instrumental in building the Orange-Gordonsville Community Hospital during the 1950s with his partner Hulbert McCoy, the same facility now being the Gordon House. He had a great sense of humor, loved playing golf and the devil's advocate, freely recited various ditties and poems, and was always welcoming. He was instrumental in the re-opening of the Gordonsville Presbyterian Church during the 1950s, serving as both deacon and elder and also serving on the Town Council of Gordonsville for 10 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Janet Floyd Bruce; parents, James Garnett and Hallie Wilkins Bruce; sister, Mary Reed Bruce; and brother, William Mercer Bruce. He is survived by his brother, Lucien W. Bruce; son, James G. Bruce III (Marguerite); and daughter, Ann Bruce DiStefano; four grandchildren, Tracy B. Clark (Chris), Heather B. Prillaman (Prescott), Joshua DiStefano (Carrie) and Noah DiStefano; and eight great-grandchildren, Chelsea, Madelyn, Claudia, Jack, Olivia, Henry, Carter and Clara. He is also survived by his good friend, Dot Hill Browning, steadfast and loving. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 11, 2010 at Preddy Funeral Home, 301 N. FILER, Edwin "Ted" Earl, 80, of Richmond, passed away on July 2, 2010. He was the son of the late William J. and Ione G. Filer. He is survived by his wife, Eleana Taylor Filer; his son, Michael Taylor Filer and wife, Alexandra; one grandson, Trevor McFadden; and two sisters, Jeanne Gradwell and Joyce Ann Knight. Ted was a graduate of John Marshall High School, where he was named All City, All State and All Southern in football. JONES, George Wilson, 83, of Chesterfield Co., died July 3, 2010. Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Elvie Gallimore Jones; three daughters, Susan Jones Ryan and her husband, S. In 1953, he earned his degree from Virginia Tech. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 10. Until his death, he was an active member of Dale Ruritan Club serving several terms as president and as a zone governor. For sixteen years, he served Chesterfield and Colonial Heights in the House of Delegates and for a portion of his tenure, he served as the Minority Whip. He successfully chaired Ronald Reagan's 1980 Presidential Campaign for the Commonwealth of Virginia. For over thirty years he owned and operated the George W. Jones Co. Mr. Jones lived life to the fullest and above all, he loved spending time with family and friends on the Rappahannock River. Born March 7, 1945 to Byrd Wesley Long and Elizabeth Kincannon Long, she grew up in Louisa County, Va. and attended Longwood College. She received her Master of Science degree in education from Virginia Commonwealth University and spent 32 years working with special education students in the Richmond Public School System, serving as a teacher, diagnostician and school administrator. Mary not only loved her children, but she believed strongly in service to mankind. She served as governor and as international director of LaSertoma Clubs, an international service organization. She was a member of St. Peter's Parish Church in New Kent, Va., where she served on the altar guild. Her favorite pastime was sport fishing on the river or bay with her husband and family. Mary is survived by her husband, Larry Nelson Hitchcock; her son, Samuel Byrd Guinn, currently serving in the military in Iraq; her daughter, Melanie Guinn Hitchcock and husband, Paul; grandson, Cole Alan Hitchcock of Quinton, Va.; a sister, Janie Long Ritchie and husband, Joe; and three nieces of Harrisonburg, Va. HARRIS, Myrtle Moore, 90, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord Saturday, July 3, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, William Malone Harris; her parents, William F. and Daisy S. Moore of Halifax; and her son, Sherwood G. Puryear. She is survived by her son, William Moore Harris and his wife, Nancy, of Blacksburg; daughter, Cheryl H. Dunbar and husband, Robert, of Midlothian; grandchildren, Alexandra M. Harris, Caitlin D. McCloud and husband, Jeromy, Courtney M. Dunbar and Mark G. Puryear; great-grandchildren, Morgan and Nathan McCloud, Brittany, Corbin, Haven and Ashley Puryear; sister-in-law, Mrs. Dan Harris; nieces, Betty Moore Becker and husband, John, and Joan Hendricks and husband, Richard; as well as numerous other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Harris grew up on a tobacco farm in Halifax County during the Depression and went on to marry her husband after his return from WWII. She worked for Miller & Rhoads Department Store for almost 30 years, retiring as a home furnishing manager in 1983. She was also a devoted wife and business partner to her husband and a member of River Road Church, Baptist. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, July 8, in the Chapel of River Road Church, Baptist, with interment to follow in Westhampton Memorial Park. |

KARN, Patrick Joseph age 81, of Richmond, passed away on July 2, 2010 at St. Mary's Hospital. Pat was born in 1928 to William Joseph and Mary O'Connor Karn in Green Bay, Wisconsin. He left there to join the U.S. Army in 1951 and met Peggy Caravati while serving as a Lieutenant and engineer aboard a ship based near Richmond. He moved here to marry her and remained happily married for 57 years. Pat was preceded in death by his brother, Bill; and sister, Margaret Vandenbusch of Green Bay, Wis. Pat is survived by Peggy; his brother, Jim Karn of Savannah, Ga.; his sons, Patrick Jr., Michael, Jamie, and Tim; his daughter, Julie Chapman; his grandchildren, Mackenzie, Moriah, Sam, Kimber, Ian, Noah, Mason Jr.; and many nieces and, nephews. Pat began his career of entrepreneurship as co-owner of a filling station in Green Bay with his brother, Jim. Once settled in Richmond, he worked briefly with his father-in-law at Caravati Salvage Yard, and then started the Richmond Wrecking Co. and the Dublin House restaurant. He later worked in sales at Tate Lumber Co. and then in 1969 established TMS Millwork Corp., which he grew into a large architectural woodworking business and directed with his sons until his retirement in 1997. In addition to family and business, Pat's passions included GB Packer football, hands-on work restoring sports cars and boats and telling stories. Some of his favorite times were while fishing, sailing and cruising with family and friends on the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay for more than a half century. The Karn family will welcome all visitors at 9 a.m. on Tuesday July 6, at St. Bridget Catholic Church, prior to the 10 a.m. funeral service there. Interment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery to follow. ROCK, William Leighton, died at Manor Care Imperial in Richmond, Va. on July 4, 2010, after a prolonged illness. Bill was born on October 22, 1922 in Troutville, Va., the second of seven children, to Herman Obenshain Rock and Gladys Leighton Rock. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by two brothers and their wives, Herman O. Rock Jr and wife, Mamie Rock and Leonard J. Rock and wife, Lova Rock; and by his brother, Harold D. Rock. He is survived by his wife, Marylouise Tompkins Rock, whom he married on September 27, 1947; by their two sons, Dr. William Leighton Rock Jr. and wife, Katherine Costin Rock, of Glen Allen, Va. and Dr. David Tompkins Rock and his wife, Tiffany Groover Rock, of Peachtree City, Ga; and by their daughter, The Rev. Dr. Nancy Rock Poti and her husband, James Vincent Poti, of Midlothian, Va.. He is also survived by ten grandchildren, William Leighton "Trip" Rock III and wife, Jessica Arin Rock, Samuel Shaw Rock, Christopher Andrew Rock and Timothy Patrick Rock, who are the sons of Bill Jr. and Kathy Rock; James Hunter Rock, Hanna Leighton Rock and Haley Grace Rock, who are the children of Dave and Tiffany Rock; and Emily Elizabeth Eldridge and husband, Stephen Daniel Eldridge, Matthew David Poti and wife, Brittany Angeline Poti and Jennifer Marie Poti, who are the children of Nancy and Jim Poti. In addition, he is survived by three great-granddaughters, Rebecca Ann-Katherine Rock, Freedom Leigh Rock and Abigail Marie Eldridge; by one great-grandson, Jonah David Rock; and by one stepgreat-grandson, Caleb Samuel Easter. Also surviving are two brothers and their wives, Robert M. Rock and wife, Sarah Rock, of Nashville, Tenn. and Richard W. Rock and wife, Janet Rock, of Suffolk, Va.; a sister, Kathryn Rock Weddle and husband, Dewie Weddle, of Troutville, Va.; and two sisters-in-law, Margaret Rock of Troutville, Va. and Sarah Tompkins Riganti and husband, Rocco Riganti, of Salem Va. Bill and "Marylou" joined First Baptist Church, Richmond on October 17, 1954 and became members of the Gold Band Class. In 1962, Bill began teaching Sunday school in the fourth grade department and continued teaching there for over 40 years, often teaching the second generation. In 2005, he was recognized as An Outstanding Christian Educator by The Center for Congregational Ministry, now known as The Resource Center. He served as a deacon and was named a Deacon Emeritus. He became Church Treasurer in 1985, retiring in October 2005. He also served on numerous committees and boards, including the Finance, Personnel, Stewardship, Audit and Budget Committees and The Board of Directors of The First Baptist Church Endowment Fund. Bill was a military veteran, having served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a Certified Public Accountant, retiring in 1985 from Coopers & Lybrand, now know as PrincewaterhouseCoopers He was a member and past president of the following professional organizations: The Virginia Association of Professions, Richmond Chapter of The Virginia Society of CPAs and the National Association of Accountants, Richmond, now knows as the Institute of Management Accountants. COLE, Willie B., 89, of Glen Allen, passed away July 4, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jane Kersey Cole. He is survived by several nieces and nephews, Carroll Palmore, Floyd Palmore, Cheryl Hoffman, Monty Cole, Lonnie Cole, and Vicky Cole; sister-in-law, Elsie Cole; and many other family members.
