Dec 7, 2010 The memorial service for Alvesta Massey Jr., 50, of Stuart, who died Dec. 3, 2010, at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart, will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Moody Funeral Home in Stuart. The Rev. Jim Churchwell will officiate. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. He was born Oct. 1, 1960, in Patrick County to Alvesta Massey Sr. and Stella Fain Massey Mitchell. He attended New Life Christian Fellowship Church, and he had been a groundskeeper at the Blue Ridge Nursing Center. Surviving are two sons, Josh Massey of Tennessee and Joseph Massey of Ohio; two stepsons, Jeremy Spinx and Dusty Crosby; a stepdaughter, Carla Cursio; a brother, Brad Spencer of Stuart; and three sisters, Linda Gregory, Betty Freeman and Bobbie Jo Smith, all of Stuart. CLEMENTS, Anne Watfield, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord December 6, 2010. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Jack M. Clements; three sons, John H. Clements (Pat), Russell M. Clements (Sherry) and Carey C. Clements (Susan); a sister, Myrna Kozusko; four grandchildren, Jay, Natalie, Ashley and Christopher; and three great-grandchildren. Dec 7, 2010 The funeral for Barbara Ann Moorman, 66, of Yonkers, N.Y., and formerly of Martinsville, who died Nov. 30, 2010, was held Saturday at Kings Highway Apostolic Church in Yonkers with Elder Christopher Carter and Bishop C.R. Scott officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery in Yonkers. She was born April 20, 1944, in Martinsville to Evelyn Moorman of Martinsville and Elder Charles Moorman. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy and James Moorman; and four sisters, Bessie, Jean, Janice and Sandra Moorman. She went to Albert Harris High School in Martinsville. She had been a member of Mount Sinai Apostle Church of God in Martinsville before joining Kings Highway Apostolic Church in New York. Surviving, in addition to her mother, are two sisters, Elizabeth Carter of Martinsville and Selma Powell of North Carolina; and a number of aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Beatrice M. Jacobson NORFOLK - Beatrice Moritz Jacobson, 85, passed away Dec. 6, 2010 in Atlanta. She was a longtime resident of Norfolk prior to moving to Atlanta in 1999 to be near her sons, Wayne and Mark. She was predeceased by her husband, Myer Jacobson, and her sister, Margo Jacobson. Mrs. Jacobson was born in Frankfurt, Germany, and came to the United States in 1941. She married her late husband in 1948 and they owned the River Terrace on Granby Street in Norfolk until his death in 1972. Mrs. Jacobson was a very loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who enjoyed traveling with her family around the United States and overseas. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Harrison, and son-in-law, Jay Harrison, of Virginia Beach; her son, Mark Jacobson and his wife Rhonda; and her son, Wayne Jacobson. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Benjamin Harrison of Virginia Beach, Matthew Harrison of Orlando, Fla., and Melissa Jacobson of Marietta, Ga.; and a great-granddaughter, Julie Harrison. In addition to being a very active traveler, Mrs. Jacobson enjoyed the company of her many friends and pet dogs. She particularly enjoyed going on family cruises and participating in water aerobics. A graveside service will be held at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 8. Funeral arrangements are being handled by H. D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. He had fought a courageous battle with diabetes for some time and had also suffered three benign brain tumor surgeries and a stroke, but was strong to the very end. |
Mrs. Bettie D. Downey, 74, of 922 Sunset Ave., Petersburg, departed this life on Thursday, Dec 2, 2010, after a brief illness at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg. She was born on Nov. 7, 1936, to the late William and Rosa Moss Sr. Mrs. Downey was also preceded in death by her sisters, Edith Moss and Jennie Wilkerson; brothers, William Jr. and Eugene Moss; and her late husband, George S. Downey., She was baptized at an early age and Bettie was a dedicated member of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, Petersburg. She was well-known by the Blandford community. Bettie enjoyed church functions and loved gospel music and programs. She absolutely adored family and family gatherings. She showed courage through even the most difficult of times and was very encouraging to us all. Even through her illness she showed great strength and was determined to do the most she could do independently and get the most she could out of her life. BAILEY, Beverly Ray, of Richmond, passed away peacefully on December 3, 2010, surrounded by family. He was 79. Mr. Bailey was preceded in death by his wife of 32 years, Charlotte Padgette Bailey. He was a passionate genealogist, Civil War buff, Virginia Tech football fan, and fiercely proud of his family and southern heritage. Mr. Bailey served in the National Guard and went on to become an accomplished draftsman. He was admired in construction circles for his extensive and practical knowledge and served as president of two contracting firms. He was especially proud of his work as project manager for the Prince William County school district, a position he held until weeks before his passing. Mr. Bailey was an active member of Huguenot United Methodist Church and enjoyed time spent at Methodist Men's Fellowship gatherings. He was also a Mason (Richmond Randolph Lodge 19, AF and AM). Left to remember and recount his humble strength of character, patience, selflessness, intelligence, and devotion to family include his wife, Sonye; children, Stann Bailey, Cathy Rossi and Laura Butler; stepson, Johnny Skelton; siblings, Evelyn Elder, Shirley Faison and William Bailey; as well as seven grandchildren. Brenda Fuqua Benson ABINGDON, Va. Brenda Fuqua Benson, 44, passed away Friday, Dec. 4, 2010, due to a massive heart attack. She was born July 2, 1966, in Abingdon to the late Edward Fuqua and Mary Ann Fuqua Bowers. Brenda was always very talented and she used her gifts by being active in her church and her community and touching the lives of friends and family near her. She was an outstanding mother, daughter, sister and aunt with a big heart and was a loving friend to everyone. Brenda worked for AT&T Communications and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Bristol Virginia. Those who knew her will miss her dearly. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by an aunt, Verna Fullen. Carroll Connelly Bass Carroll Connelly Bass, affectionately known as Charlie to most, passed away peacefully Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010. He was born in Lynchburg on Feb. 18, 1946, to Ethel Sandridge Bass and the late Bascomb Claude Bass. In addition to his father, Carroll was preceded in death by two brothers, Edward Logan Bass and David Watkins Bass. In addition to his mother, Carroll leaves behind his long-time fianc‚, Jeanne Keatts, whom he loved dearly, and her four children and five grandchildren: Danny and Tracy Critchley (Ryan, Brittany and Matthew), Sherry Patty, Rhonda and Dennis Bell (Ashley and Brandy), Rodney and Kathy Critchley, all of whom Carroll could not have loved more had they been his own children, especially the grandchildren who called him "PaPa". He is also survived by a sister, Jean Bass Burns of Lynchburg; three brothers, Ronald Bass, James (Sue) Bass, of Lynchburg and Michael (Karen) Bass, of Madison Heights. He leaves behind several nieces, nephews, friends, an aunt Mildred Roach, of Long Island and a special friend, Danny Clark, whom Carroll praised highly as "his" mechanic. Although he was not a member of any specific church, Carroll was of the Christian faith and believed in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. He enjoyed watching Jonathan Falwell deliver his sermon via television and he loved listening to Walter Yancy's radio ministry, Strength for Today during his long road trips as an OTR truck driver for C.B. Fleet Phar-maceuticals. He retired from C.B. Fleet in 2008 after more than 30 years of service. A service to celebrate Carroll's life is planned for Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2010, at 1 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Service with burial to follow in Virginia Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9p.m., today, Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at Heritage Funeral Service, 427 Graves Mill Road and other times at the residence of his sister. She was preceded in death by her parents, Charlotte and Joseph Breaznell, and a sister Joan., Charlotte was born in Brooklyn, New York, May 28, 1924, and grew up in Port Washington, New York. She attended Pembroke College and Rhode Island School of Design earning a B.A., After college Charlotte took a painting class in New York City from Amadee Ozenfant. It was there that she met her first husband, George Eldredge Adams, an artist., George and Charlotte married in 1947 and had three children, Reginald B. Adams, Anne Eldredge Adams and Charles B. Adams. They resided in the Adams family home in Hempstead, New York., After Charlotte was widowed she continued her education at Hofstra Universiy and then moved to Washington, Connecticut, where she taught art in the public schools of Litchfield County., In 1963, Charlotte met and married John M. Embree, an engineer and businessman. They had a daughter, Margaret Train Embree., In 1967, Charlotte and family moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where she was involved in many local activities; but it was her family that enjoyed her greatest interest and support., Charlotte is survived by her four children; also surviving are four grandchildren, Reginald Jr. and Rebecca Adams, Bonnie and Lillian Adams; two step-grandchildren, Wade and Elliott Davies; and two great- grandchildren, Lena-Logan and Henry Adams., The family would like to thank all of the staff that took care of Charlotte at Martha Jefferson House and at the Cedars., A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 8, 2010, at Christ Episcopal Church, 120 West High Street, Charlottesville., Hill and Wood Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. |

Dec 7, 2010 LANCASTER — Dewel Gray Joyce, 79, of Lancaster and formerly of Martinsville, died Monday, Nov. 29, 2010, at his home. He was born Aug. 19, 1931, in Henry County to Samuel Ernest and Mattie Wigginton Joyce. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Ernest Roy Joyce. He served in the Marine Corps during the Korean conflict, and he was a member of Fieldale United Methodist Church. He was a member of several service organizations in Martinsville and was a member of the Moose Lodge in Lively. Joyce was in the financial and insurance business, and most recently was employed by Brian Dillistin. Surviving are a son, Roy LaMance Joyce of White Stone; a daughter, Wanda Joyce McKinnis of Locust Grove; three granddaughters; a brother, L. Leon Joyce of Martinsville; and two sisters, Judith Joyce Steinbeck of Williamsburg and Deborah Joyce Dillon of Ridgeway. Services and inurnment will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. Diane E. Hollingshead BUCHANAN, Mich. - Diane E. Hollingshead, 47, died unexpectedly of natural causes Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010 in her home. She was born June 24, 1963 in Corpus Christ, Texas to David and Gloria Callaway Winiker of Virginia Beach, who survive her. On Oct. 17, 1987 in Virginia Beach she married Scott Hollingshead who survives along with a son, Ryan Hollingshead of Buchanan. Also surviving is a brother, Jeff Winiker of Norfolk. Diane was a substitute teacher who taught mostly in the Buchanan community schools and was a past president of the Buchanan Band Boosters as well as holding the office of committee person for Boy Scout Troop 541 of Buchanan. A celebration of life service will be held Friday, Dec. 10, at 6 p.m at the Swem Chapel, Buchanan, where visitation will be offered starting at 3 p.m. until the time of service. Dec 7, 2010 HARRISONBURG — Dianne Hope Tatum Meyers, 57, of Harrisonburg, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2010. She was born June 18, 1953, in Patrick County to Thomas Eddie Tatum and Rebecca Tatum of Spencer. She received a degree in early childhood education from Madison College in 1975 and worked as an elementary school teacher in Rockingham County for 25 years, retiring in 1999 due to health concerns. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband of 34 years, Timothy Andrew Meyers; two sons, Wesley Andrew Meyers of Massanutten and William Buckley Meyers of Baton Rouge, La.; a granddaughter; a brother, Thomas "Edd" Tatum of Richmond; two sisters, Revonda Mosser of Salem and Mary Hart of Stockbridge, Mass.; and 13 nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg with Pastor Wayne Wright officiating. Dorothy is survived by her brother, Father George; former husband, Edward Almeda; her three children and their spouses, Patricia (Jim), Donna (Pierre), and Edward (Betsy). Dorothy was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. A special thanks and appreciation to the staff of Virginia Beach Health Care for making us feel so comfortable during our final Dorothy moments with Dorothy. CLUVERIUS, Edward F. "Ed", 80, passed away Sunday, December 5, 2010 after a long and courageous battle with heart and kidney disease. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Helen McGinness Cluverius. He was a cherished father, grandfather, family member and friend. He will be missed by the people he touched the most - his beloved family, his children, Jimmy, Terry Teal, Kathy Calhoun (Bob), Eddie, and Patty Harte (Scott); his grandchildren, Lindsay, Joshua and Danielle Teal, Abe, Mitchell and Quinn Calhoun, and Jack Harte. A veteran of the Korean War, Ed graduated from the University of Richmond where he was president of his fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon. He retired from Moore Business Form as a senior account executive and a lifetime member and executive vice-president in the Moore's Achievement Club. Edward J. Ryan Sr. NORFOLK - Edward J. Ryan Sr., 95, passed away peacefully Friday, Dec. 3, 2010. A native of Norfolk he grew up in the Brambleton area of the city and graduated from Maury High School in 1935. For many years he coached the Park Place football team and those years were some of his fondest memories. Eddie was a World War II veteran having served as a rifleman with the 329th Army Infantry Division and a retired civil servant. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Stewart Ryan; his parents, Irene Owen Ryan and Patrick Joseph Ryan; and his lifelong best friends, Harry and Elizabeth Ball. Left to cherish his memory are two sons and one daughter, Edward J. (Joe) Ryan Jr., Stewart O. Ryan and Irene R. Elens Miller VIRGINIA BEACH - Elens Miller, 62, died Nov. 30, 2010 in a local hospital. Elens was born Oct. 9, 1948 to Sarah C. Miller and the late Elens Miller Sr. in Ithaca, N.Y. As a young man, he attended Immaculate Conception Church in New York and served as an altar boy. After high school, Elens joined the United States Navy Submarine Corps as a chef. Upon retirement, Elens attended Cobleskill Junior College and Rochester Institute of Technology; he also received an accounting degree from Tompkins Cortland Community College of New York. On Valentine's Day Feb. 14, 2009, Elens was united in holy matrimony to Rita Gregory- Jones. Prior to his death, Elens worked at Pizza Hut and the Cavalier Hotel in Virginia Beach. He was a diligent worker and was loved by everyone who worked with him. He will long be remembered for his interest in history, and his love for reading. Cherishing his beloved memory is his wife, Rita; his mother, Sarah Miller; children, Elens D. Miller, Lee Miller and Edward Miller; stepsons, Shawn Gregory and Kecalf Cuffee; sister, Cynthia Miller and a host of family and friends. Eva Catherine Rumbley Mahood, Eva Catherine Rumbley Mahood experienced the joy of going to her eternal home with Jesus Christ her Lord on Sunday, December 5, 2010., Eva was born in Kingsport, Tennessee, on March 13, 1922, the daughter of Gordon and Nydia Rumbley. Her brother, Gordon "Bus" Rumbley; and sisters, Mildred Rumbley and Ruth Huddleston, preceded her in passing., On November 20, 1942, Eva married John Alexander "Jack" Mahood of Roanoke, Virginia. They had two children, Carol Mahood Thurston, wife of Richard Thurston of Charlottesville, Virginia, and Frank Marvin Mahood, husband of Arlene Mahood of Hurricane, West Virginia. Eva's four grandchildren are Erica Thurston Knights, Inga Thurston Barclay, Ashley Mahood Rich and John Alexander Mahood. She also had nine great-grandchildren. She had been a widow since 1982., Eva shared her love of Jesus and her musical talents with many people in many different communities over the years. She was a long-time member of Darlington United Methodist Church of South Charleston, West Virginia, and then of First Baptist Church of Roanoke, Virginia. For several years, she resided with her daughter and son-in-law in Charlottesville, Virginia, before moving to Mountain View Nursing Home near Madison, Virginia, in September of 2009. FORE, George Elfe, 83, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 4, 2010. Born in Savannah, Ga., to George Atkinson Fore and Eliza L. Fore, George attended John Marshall High School, where he was a member of the Cadet Corps: F Company. George loved to sing and was a member of the All Saints Episcopal Church Boys Choir and later The Church of the Epiphany Choir. After high school, George served in the U.S. Navy during WW II in the Pacific Arena, and then attended Virginia Tech, earning a Mechanical Engineering degree. He worked for Roache, Mercer & Faison Consulting Engineers in Richmond, was a Boy Scout leader for 15 years, an avid gardener and especially loved spending time with friends and family at Ocracoke Island, N.C. He and Sarah enjoyed traveling cross-country visiting family and friends, touring overseas and attending three Olympic Games. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sarah McMurdo Fore; son, George Edward Fore (Linda); daughters, Elizabeth Fore Baird (Chuck) and Susan Fore Vinson (John); eight grandchildren, Keren Barden (Cliff), Matthew Vinson (Heather), Joey and Meredith Vinson, Kristen Baird, Chavis Fore, John Tolson and Amanda Valenzuela (Victor); one great-grandchild, Ethan Barden; sister, Elizabeth T. Mason served in the Infantry and Air Force, during WWII, in the European Theater for five years. He died of complications from Multiple Myeloma after suffering with it since 2007. His lifestyle had changed drastically in 1995, when Macular Degeneration took his vision and he became legally blind. Those who knew him were always amazed at how he dealt with his condition so gracefully. |

A native of Norfolk, and the son of the late George W. and Blanche Corbell Pallette, he retired in 1984 from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a General Foreman in Shop 72. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, Portsmouth, where he was assistant to the treasurer for many years. He loved fishing, helping others and was an avid bridge player. He is survived by his wife, Martha Jones Pallette; a son, George W. Gladys Marie Taylor Gladys Marie Taylor, 86, formerly of Jacksontown, Ohio, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, in Johnson City, Tenn. She was born in Ripley, W.Va., on Oct. 26, 1924, to the late Louease and John Goldsmith. She was a member of Jacksontown United Methodist Church and a graduate of Thornville High School in Thornville, Ohio. Gladys spent over 25 years in the grocery business in Hebron and Heath, Ohio, which was a perfect career to allow her to interact with her many friends and customers on a regular basis. She was a devoted wife to her husband, Clyde "Pudge" Taylor. They were able to enjoy nearly 60 years of marriage prior to Pudge's death in 1998. They spent over 20 years enjoying winters together in Fort Myers, Fla., where they played golf nearly every day, fished, played bingo and traveled with their friends. She was proud that she consistently won many of the golf tournaments she entered and had the distinction of achieving two "hole-in-one's" while in her seventies. Her two grandsons were a special part of her life as she took them golfing, fishing and to ballgames. She also sent them baseball cards every week when they were in Little League. She is survived by her daughter, Danea Taylor Walters and her husband Mitch Walters of Bristol Tennessee; two grandsons and their wives, Brandon and Kim Walters of Charlotte, N.C., and Dustin and Kelly Walters of Johnson City; six great- grandchildren, Sam, Kate, Emma, Mack, Parke and Henry; seven brothers, Doug Goldsmith, Ernest Goldsmith, Dewey Goldsmith, Eddie Young, Tom Young, Chuck Young, and David Young; and many nieces and nephews. Gladys had a very special relationship with her brother, Ernest, and a niece, Sue Bixler. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Young and Owen Young. Grace Meade Parker EMPORIA - Grace Meade Parker, 91, passed away Dec. 4, 2010. She was born Nov. 10, 1919 in Emporia to Grace Vincent Parker and Junius Wesley Parker and was a lifetime resident of Emporia. She taught elementary classes at Purdy School during World War II and after that taught in Emporia Elementary School until her retirement. He is survived by three sons, Harold Morgan Bell Jr., of Lynchburg, Ricky Bell and his wife, Evelyn, of Gladys, and John Bell and his wife, Holly, of Gladys; three brothers, Ed Bell, Paul Bell, and David Bell; four sisters, Ruth Hartman, Aileen Shirlen, Becky Mitchell, and June Colbert; four grandchildren, Justin Bell and his wife, Shannon, Devon Bell, Cody Bell, and Amanda Bell; and a great-grandchild, Madyson Bell. Henry H. Johnson II VIRGINIA BEACH - Henry Harrison Johnson II, who lived 57 years to the absolute fullest, moved on to his next great adventure Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010 at 12:30 a.m. after courageously fighting his battle with esophageal cancer for nearly three years. A native of Virginia Beach, Henry was the son of the late W. Taylor and Foye Keeter Johnson. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Foye J. Adkins. Henry is survived by the love of his life, Laurie Zirkle Johnson and his five beautiful, adoring children, Mariah Elizabeth Johnson and her partner Becky Williams, Sarah-Ashley Johnson Wilkerson, Henry Harrison Johnson III and his wife Ashley Johnson, Hilary Parker Johnson and Marion Foye Johnson. He also enjoyed six years with his precious granddaughter, Rhaegan Taylor Wilkerson. Henry's loving siblings include Maria Karnitschnig, W. Taylor Johnson Jr. and his wife Rena Johnson, Eunice Baugh and her husband Steve Baugh, and his twin sister, Margaret Miller; as well as many special nieces and nephews. His constant companion, chocolate lab Skylar and Maine Coon cat Mr. Kitty, will miss him all of their days. Henry, a.k.a. the Legend, was an avid waterfowl hunter and enjoyed a multitude of hunts with his son, brother, and good friends. Those times meant so much to him, from his first hunt as a child to his last hunt this season. The highlight of his hunting season was the annual trip to Canada with Harrison and Taylor. He also loved to fish and enjoyed many days with his children on the boat. His favorite vacation was the family week in Hatteras each summer. Hugh T. Callahan VIRGINIA BEACH - Hugh Thomas Callahan, 69, passed away Dec. 4, 2010 at Westminster-Canterbury in Virginia Beach, his residence since 2004. He enjoyed literature, arts and travel, and he was an avid historian and photographer, and he was an active and faithful member of Community United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach. Tom ("Tommy" to family) was born on the Callahan family farm at Opie in Mecklenburg County, Virginia to parents, Eddie Lee Callahan Sr. and Mattie Sue Farrar Callahan April 1, 1941. The youngest child in a family of seven, Tom was a loving and devoted son, brother and uncle, and a faithful shepherd of his family. Tom was a 1958 graduate of Park View High School in South Hill, and he held degrees from the University of Richmond (B.A., English) and The College of William and Mary and (M.A., Education). He served honorably in the U.S. Army in Puerto Rico from 1966 to 1971, where he taught English to Spanish- speaking soldiers, and returned to teach English at Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake. After retirement from Chesapeake Public Schools, he taught English at Tidewater Community College (Norfolk campus) until 2008. Tom was predeceased by his parents; brother, E. L. "Pete" Callahan Jr.; and sisters, Katherine Vajda and Frances Summers. He is survived by sisters, Dorothy Fisher of Red Oak, N.C., Annie Laura Rice of Chesapeake, and Rose Elizabeth Callahan of Virginia Beach; five nephews, five nieces, and 13 great-nephews and nieces. She was known affectionately as "Polly" to her brothers and sisters, Werter H. Hurt, Jr., Charles W. COOK, Mary Lee, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, December 2, 2010. She was born May 10, 1913 in Goochland, Va. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jeremiah Cook Sr.; two sons, Jeremiah Jr. and Robert Cook; and one daughter, Carrie Mills. She is survived by five loving daughters, Bertha Stevens of Fredericksburg, Va., Gladys Tyler (Charles) of Richmond, Va., Flora Kitt, Daisy Jackson (devoted), and Irene Fuller (Peyton) of Goochland, Va.; 37 grandchildren, 93 great-grandchildren, 71 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, two daughters-in-law, one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law, and a host of relatives and friends. She retired from St. Luke Hospital after 35 faithful years of service. A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at 1 p.m. at Shady Grove Baptist Church, Gum Spring, Va. Mary Jane Justus Cooper HURLEY, Va. Mary Jane Justus Cooper, 82 years of age, passed away Saturday, Dec. 4, 2010, at the Wellmont-Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol Tennessee, following an extended illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was the daughter of the late Burbage and Amanda Lester Justus. She was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and was a member of Blackey Baptist Church. She graduated from Hurley High School, Radford State Teacher's College and received her master's and PHD from the University of Virginia. She was a loving mother, sister, and was a retired school teacher for the Buchanan County School System with over 40-years of service and was a former professor at Southwest Virginia Community College. Mrs. Cooper was preceded in death by her son, Harold E. Cooper, Feb. 13, 1974. She is survived by four sisters, Gladys Light, Bristol Virginia, Wilma Potter , Hurley, Lillian and husband Pleas Hawkins, Hurley, Frances and husband Howard McClellan, Hurley; also, survived by special friend, Phyllis Light; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five sisters, Dora Hopkins, Ellen Hall, Bessie Griffith, Orpha Gibbs and Wanda Justus; two brothers, Raymond Justus and Marshal Justus; and two nephews, Bobby Dale Smith and Larry Ray Justus. Funeral services for Mary Jane Justus Cooper will be conducted Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Blackey Baptist Church, Blackey, Va., with Revs. Larry Stinson and Eugene Whited officiating, with entombment to follow at the Mountain Rest Mausoleum, Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. David M. Balk VIRGINIA BEACH - Capt. David Michael Balk, 53, passed away Dec. 2, 2010 in Virginia Beach. Capt. Balk recently retired from the Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC) in Little Creek after serving 30 years in the United States Naval Civil Engineering Corp. (Seabees). He had qualified as a Seabee combat warfare and diving officer. He received a B.S. in Architectural Engineering from California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, Calif., and a M.E. in Ocean Engineering from Texas A&M. His enthusiasm and passion for engineering, ocean sciences, and anything to do with the ocean was surpassed only by his love of family. Capt. Balk is survived by his wife of 30 years, Juanita Paula; his son, 1st Lt. Alexander Sean, his daughter, Meghan Anne; and his mother, Melvina Lee of Tucson, Ariz. Other survivors include his nieces, Jessica Sarah and Stephanie Debra Balk; and his cousin, Sarah Kaye Bellman. His father, Sheldon Balk, and his brother, Lt. Cmdr. Richard Dean Balk preceded him in death. Michael James Camp VIRGINIA BEACH - Michael Camp, 56, passed away peacefully Dec. 6, 2010 in Norfolk Sentara Heart Hospital from heart surgery complications. He was born in San Diego and moved to Virginia in 1963. Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Hattie Jo Camp in 2006. He is survived by his father, retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. William George Camp; son, Jason and his wife Michelle Fitzgibbons; two sisters, Peggy Mullins and Cathy Whitacre; three brothers, Bill, Thomas, and Robert Camp; one niece, Elizabeth Mullins, and a nephew, Oliver Mullins; aunt and uncle, June and George Bahue and their three children, Gregg, Teri and Laura. Michael was a generous, sincere and down to earth person who loved music and his family. Michael played the harmonica, blues harp and loved performing on stage. He played with Texas Boogie, the Embers, and Bill Deal and The Rhondels. Michael was also the sound engineer for The Rhondels. He was the audio and sound manager at The Virginia Beach Amphitheater since 1996. Michael jammed with many artists including Bruce Hornsby and James Cotton. Mike will be truly missed as a great person, friend, brother, son and talented person in the music field. He will be remembered for his unwavering devotion to his father, story telling, sense of humor, and love of jazz. Mildred Allen Lane Mildred "Millie" Allen Lane, 71, of Locust Grove, passed away December 4, 2010 at Mary Washington Hospital. Millie was born December 6, 1938 in Trenton, New Jersey to George and Dorothy Allen. Millie was married for fifty years to Frederick "Ted" Earl Lane., Her husband, Frederick "Ted" Lane of Locust Grove, Virginia, daughter Terrie Lane of Sierra Vista, Arizona, son Frederick "Rick" Allen Lane and his wife Carolyn of Brandy Station, Virginia, grandson Cody Lane of Brandy Station, Virginia and step grandson, Michael Bailey survive Millie. Also surviving are sisters, Barbara "Bonnie" Marvin of Richmond, Virginia, Linda Robeson and her husband Stuart and step niece Katie of Warrenton, Virginia, Judy Allen of Casanova, Virginia and her mother Dorothy Allen of Locust Grove, Virginia. Millie's father George Allen of Locust Grove, Virginia preceded her in death., Millie graduated from Mercer Hospital School of Nursing College, in Trenton, New Jersey, as an RN. She worked as a nurse at Culpeper Hospital, Fauquier Hospital and as an occupational health nurse for Southland, GM Power Train, Department of Corrections at Camp 11 and Coffeewood Correctional Center. She had a 40 year career as a nurse, earning many awards for creative and innovative programs, a place in Who's Who in American Nursing. After her retirement from her nursing career, she became very active in art., Millie was a multi media artist in glass fusion, oils, watercolors, acrylics, inks, mixed media and collage, primarily in landscapes. She had been painting in various media all her life but mainly since 1970. She learned and taught as she went. She loved plein air painting in watercolors the best so she could feel what she painted. She loved to experiment claiming, "It is only a piece of paper or canvas!" She had received many awards on her paintings and wood sculpture work and had exhibited in Culpeper, Orange, Colonial Beach, Alexandria, Warrenton, King George, Charlottesville, and Fredericksburg., She was an active member of Brushstrokes Gallery of Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg Center for Creative Arts, Wide River Gallery in Col. Beach, and had works in Mike and Jake's Restaurant, Caroline St. Caf‚ in old town Fredericksburg, as well as Orange Art Center, Village Frame and Gallery, Culpeper Depot and Library, and Wilderness Library and her home gallery. She was an active member, as well as the Chair or Co-chair for many years, of the Lake of the Woods Visual Arts Council. She was an active member of Artists of the Windmore and The Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts., She served on the Lake Users Committee, was Vice President of the Square Dance Club and was the Vice President of the Scuba Diving Club, ran with Lake of the Woods Rescue Squad and taught CPR. On Oct. 19, 2008, he was acknowledged in a front page story of the Daily Times, featuring the history of the Parsonsburg Fire Company. Somewhere during the time before 9-1-1 (1940s – 1960s), he was a volunteer for the Parsonsburg Fire Company, while on duty all night at Hastings Hatchery. The hatchery was connected to the fire station by an eight party telephone line. When he received the emergency call, he would set the alarm off and the firemen would call him to get the location. |

Peter Leonard Howes VIRGINIA BEACH - On Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 25, 2010, the vibrant family man and trusted friend, Peter Howes, went into cardiac arrest near the 5½ mile mark of the 6.2 mile Turkey Trot Race in Virginia Beach. A quick response by the compassionate runners who came to his assistance was not enough for him to fully regain consciousness. He remained in critical condition until Dec. 4 when he passed away peacefully. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Emily; son, Todd; daughter-in-law, Shonda; son-in-law, Keith; sisters, Christina Farrell and Norma Howes-Benoit; brother-in-law, Roy Farrell. Robert (Randy) Randolph Riddle Robert (Randy) Randolph Riddle, 62, of Lynchburg, went to be with The Lord, on Sunday, Dec. 5, 2010, at his residence after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Mary Wade Riddle. Born Oct. 22, 1948, in Waynesboro, he was the son of Gladys Beaver Riddle and the late Harry Sheldon Riddle. He retired from the Waynesboro Fire Department after twenty-two years of service. Randy loved being a fireman and helping others. Mr. Carwile was born in Campbell Co., Va., the son of the late Hilda Cardwell Carwile and the late Charles Carwile. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U. S. Army. Robert "Randy", Randolph Riddle, Robert "Randy" Randolph Riddle, 62, of Lynchburg, went to be with the Lord, on Sunday, December 5, 2010, at his residence, after a long illness., He is survived by his wife, Mary Wade Riddle., He was born on October 22, 1948, in Waynesboro, the son of Gladys Beaver Riddle and the late Harry Sheldon Riddle. He retired from the Waynesboro Fire Department after twenty-two years of service. Born in Fairfax, S.D., Bob was raised in Ronceverte/White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., and graduated from Greenbrier High School in 1948. He was a U.S., veteran of the, . After graduating from West Virginia University in 1957 with a B.S. degree in chemical engineering, Bob worked for 45 years as a chemical engineer for Olin Chemicals in Saltville, Va., and Amoco Chemicals in Joliet, Ill., and Decatur, Ala. He was a member of the Presbyterian church. Bob was preceded in death by his father, Robert Rudolph Spurling Sr.; and stepfather and mother, Edward and Edna Johnson Shires. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Phyllis Lowery; their sons, Robert Rudolph III and Curtis Leroy; Robert III's wife Heidi Weiffenbach, and their children Robert Jackson, Caroline Christian, and Curtis Maclean; his sister, Jane Shires Radabaugh and husband Roy and their family; and brother, Thomas Edward "Tommy" Shires and his wife Martha and family. Bob had a lifelong interest in hunting, but his passion was his grandchildren. Jackson, Bob's 12-year-old grandson, summed up his feelings for his grandfather this way: "If you think that you've met someone who's as fun and playful as can be, think again! His grandchildren have gone to visit and have come home so happy and tickled. In my opinion, PaPaw should have pursued a late career of how to teach people how to be a fun grandpa." She was born January 3, 1921, in Exeter, Maine to William Staples and Eva Tupper Staples. Ruth graduated from Washburn High School in Washburn, ME, class of 1938; packed parachutes during WWII in Presque Isle, ME, at a defense facility where she met and married Anthony Giangrande February 14, 1943. As a Navy wife and homemaker, she moved many times, until the family relocated in Williamsburg, VA, where she was an active volunteer with the area SPCA for many years and a Brownie troop leader., After her husband's retirement from Civil Service at Fort Eustis, VA, they moved to Madison County, VA, where Ruth enjoyed volunteering as a Pink Lady for the Culpeper Memorial Hospital. Virginia Margaret Bogert Schatz died on Sunday, November 28, 2010, in North Branford, Connecticut., She was born December 23, 1928, in Englewood, New Jersey, the youngest daughter of Louise C. Laue and Daniel G. Bogert., A graduate of Englewood public schools and 1950 Smith College alumna with a degree in French and chemistry, she was one of the first women to receive a Ph.D. in chemistry at Brown University, earning her doctorate in 1955. While at Brown, she married classmate Paul N. Schatz, a Philadelphia native and University of Pennsylvania alumnus. They settled in Charlottesville, where they lived on Jamestown Drive for nearly 50 years before moving to Connecticut in 2007., With generosity, gusto, and good humor, Mrs. Schatz raised three sons, ran a busy household, and supported her husband's career as a chemistry professor. She was also active in civic life, serving on Charlottesville's School Board, City Planning Commission, as its vice-chair and first-ever female chair, League of Women Voters, and Democratic Committee. She kept a hand in science, conducting postdoctoral research at the University of Virginia in the surgery and biology departments. She was also an avid amateur archaeologist, horsewoman, and opera buff., Mrs. Schatz spent many happy hours at Lazy Days, her family's cottage on Fire Island, where she gamely welcomed family and friends, cooked historic chicken dinners, vanquished old-house problems, gave new meaning in retirement to the term "late breakfast," pored fervently over the New York Times, triumphantly plucked splinters from several generations of children's feet, and occasionally snatched a well-deserved nap on the front-porch swing., Besides her husband, Paul and sister, Elizabeth, she leaves her sons, David Gilliam Schatz (Susan Papa) of New Haven, Connecticut, Peter Joseph Schatz (Leilani Miller) of Cupertino, California, and Jonathan Harry Schatz (Mary), of New York, New York., "Grandma Ginny" also leaves six grandchildren, Annakate and Claudia of New Haven, Daniel and Andrew of Cupertino, and Paul and Madeline of New York. Woodrow E. Martin BATTERY PARK - Woodrow Elma Martin, formerly of Newport Street, died Dec. 6, 2010 in a Windsor nursing home. A native of Rescue, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Bloxom Martin; one brother, William "Bud" Martin; and two sisters, Lucy Ann Turner and Lula Mae Buppert. Mr. Martin retired from the boat shop at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and was an oysterman most of his life. He was a skilled model boat builder and each of his sons has one of the six model boats that he built. He was a member of Battery Park Baptist Church, Smithfield Union Masonic Lodge No. 18, and was an Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include four sons, Thomas E. Martin and wife Ellen of Chesapeake, Douglas Martin and wife Betty of Smithfield, Lynn Martin and wife Nancy of Mechanicsville, Va., and Mark Martin of Franklin; eight grandchildren, Robin Jakobs, David Martin, Sue Bambery, Ronald Martin, Lynn B. Martin II, Jessicca Martin, Michelle Martin, and Mark Steven Martin Jr.; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Carolyn Martin, and brother-in-law, George Buppert, both of Rescue. A funeral will be held Thursday, Dec. 9, at 11 a.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Bennetts Creek Chapel, Suffolk, by the Rev. Donald Watkins. Burial with Masonic Rites will be in St. Luke's Cemetery.
