Addie Tolley Goff Addie Tolley Goff, 95, of Goode, passed away Friday, Dec. 24, 2010, at Avante at Lynchburg. She was born Friday, Sept. 17, 1915, in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Richard Tolley and Mary Campbell Tolley. She was also preceded in death by her husbands, Woodrow Wilson Goff and Howard Moses Goff, and a son, Cecil Wilson Goff. She was a member of Chestnut Hill Freewill Baptist Church. Surviving are her daughters, Rachel G. Wilson and husband, Claude, Mildred G. Stevens and husband, Phil, all of Rustburg, and Marie G. Stevens and husband, Lewis, of Bedford; two sons, Richard Wade Goff and wife, Margaret, of Goode, and Keith Woodrow Goff and wife, Marie, of Rustburg; and 14 grandchildren and numerous great- grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at Chestnut Hill Freewill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Phil Stevens and Rev. Robert Breeden officiating. Annie Woodall Rice Annie Woodall Rice, 93, formerly of Altavista, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, in Lynchburg Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was the wife of the late Samuel Russell Rice. She was born Nov. 14, 1917, in Gladys, a daughter of the late Annie Elder Woodall and John Hudson Woodall and a 1936 graduate of Gladys High School. She was a member of Clement Memorial Wesleyan Church and an active volunteer at the Altavista EMS Thrift Store for over 20 years. She is survived by two sons, Jerry Rice and his wife, Linda, of Altavista, and Jackie Rice and his special friend, Susan Moye, of Blounts Creek, N.C.; a daughter, Joanne Rice Hudson, of Forest; 13 grandchildren; and a number of great- grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sons, Johnnie and Jimmie Rice; a son-in-law, Tommy Hudson; a brother; two sisters; and a grandson, David Hudson. He was born Oct. 4, 1958, to the late Tommie William Thorpe Sr. and Adlean Hayes Thorpe. He received his early education in Dinwiddie County Public Schools. At an early age, he joined the Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, Va. He was employed with Mr. Mack Butterworth Jr. for 33 years in the farming industry. He was preceded in death by his father, the late Tommie W. Thorpe Sr.; and one brother, Frank W. Thorpe. James will be missed by all who knew and loved him dearly., He leaves to cherish his memory: his mother, Adlean Thorpe of Dinwiddie; siblings, Mary M. Jackson (Thomas) of Petersburg, Blanche M. Arnold (John) of Dinwiddie, the Rev. P. Odessa Clarke (Cardwell), Tommie W. Thorpe Jr., Gale P. Winfield (Floyd), all of Petersburg, Frances V. Burns of Colonial Heights, Cecelia L. Thorpe of Richmond, and Pamela R. Thorpe of Pensacola, Fla.; a devoted friend, Erica Jones of Dinwiddie; a host of nephews, three of whom were devoted, Tarrie D. Thorpe, Raymond Mason, and Milton D. Janine was born to Andre' and Juliette Potor and raised in France. As a young girl, her favorite place was Yvetot. The ocean held a special place in her heart. She came to the United States as the bride of Alvin, who was a GI during the American occupation of France in World War II., Janine was artistic and innovative and a gourmet. She was creative with fabric and an accomplished seamstress, making clothes and stuffed animals for her family. She collected fabrics for the many ideas she had brewing in her creative mind. Janine painted too., Janine was fun-loving and playful; a good practical joker. Everyone who met her seemed to enjoy her company and was curious about her lovely French accent. She will be missed., She is survived by her husband, Alvin A. Wisco of Charlottesville; a son, Eric A. Wisco and his wife, Aysim A. Wisco. of Greensboro, North Carolina; and a daughter, Sandra J. Robertson Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Robert John "Bobby" Robertson Jr., M.D., died Dec. 22, 2010 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, where he had practiced as a physician specializing in internal medicine and cardiology for more than 40 years. Born Sept. 26, 1928 and raised in Norfolk, he was a 1946 graduate of Maury High School. He graduated in 1950 from VMI and was a member of the cavalry equestrian, wrestling and lacrosse teams. He attended the University of Virginia where he earned a master's degree in chemistry. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, followed by a residency and cardiology fellowship at Emory University in Atlanta. In 1962, he moved to Virginia Beach and began his medical practice and joined the medical staff of the General Hospital of Virginia Beach, then located at 25th Street and Arctic Avenue. He was instrumental in the establishment and building of Virginia Beach General Hospital at its current location on First Colonial Road, and served as its first president of the medical staff in 1964. An early advocate of coordinated, effective, efficient emergency care to reduce the severity of injury and save lives, he participated in the establishment of the Tidewater Emergency Medical Service Council in 1974. He served as its first president and remained an active director for the rest of his life. He served as a director on the Governor's EMS Advisory Board. Bobby was also a member of the Virginia Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and the Virginia Beach Medical Society. He was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the Princess Anne Rotary Club for his medical missionary trip to Haiti. He was a longtime member of Virginia Beach United Methodist Church and a volunteer with Meals on Wheels. Bobby had many varied interests, as well as being involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren. He supported and participated in their equestrian events, and helped establish the Virginia Pony Breeders Association, serving on its first board of directors. He also loved hunting, fishing, sailing, snow skiing and traveling. He was predeceased by his parents, Robert John Robertson Sr. and Martha Blair Armstrong Robertson of Norfolk; and a sister, Jane R. Capshaw. He is survived by his loving wife, June Hand-Decker Robertson; and three children, the Rev. Robert John Robertson III and his wife Carolyn of Chesapeake, Anne Randolph Schmudde and husband Eric of Virginia Beach and Martha Bruce Lazar and husband Mike of San Diego. He loved and adored his four grandchildren, Michael Thomas Robertson, Katherine Byrd Robertson, Davis Robert Schmudde and Kellam Anne Schmudde. He is also survived by a sister, Blair Willis and husband Ben of Norfolk; a brother, Jeff Robertson and wife Nancy of Rochester, Minn.; a brother, Forrest Robertson and wife Margaret of Virginia Beach; numerous nieces including his goddaughters, Martha Blair Willis FitzGerald and Annie Robertson Rudolph; nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. He also leaves behind favorite friends, Kent Weber, Freeman Epes, Kim Swenson; hunting buddies, Stan Wilson Sr. and Stan Wilson Jr. and Erving Pickett; his physician, colleague and dear friend, Michael Steinberg; so many others for which we are truly grateful; and his beloved dogs, Sandy and Caci. Mrs. Phillips was a graduate of Wesleyan College in Georgia and was a former cartographer during World War II while her husband served his country in Europe. She was a former teacher at King William High School and Southampton High School. After retiring from education, she gave service to her community by volunteering with the Southampton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She was very active at the YMCA and won numerous National Senior Olympics medals in swimming. She was a longtime member of High Street United Methodist Church where her contributions and talents and can be seen every year as the Chrismon tree shines. Mrs. Phillips spent her life learning many trades through family and friends. She enjoyed painting fine china, crafting rare and exquisite eggs, and designing and building furniture with her husband. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Allene P. Atkinson and husband Mike; son, Stephen K. Phillips and wife Nancy; and son, William Alexander Phillips Jr. and wife Celeste, all of Franklin; and a brother-in-law, Jake Rawls of Georgia. She is also survived by the pride and joy of her life, her six grandchildren, Michalene Atkinson Bauer and husband Tim, Phillip Atkinson and wife Kendra, Ashley Atkinson, Scott Phillips, Brian Phillips and Lorrie Coggsdale; and her two great-grandchildren, Rease Bauer and Gage Bauer. A funeral celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, at the High Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Susan Reaves and the Rev. Edward C. Johnson officiating. Internment will follow at Poplar Spring Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, and other times at Allene and Mike's home, 108 Woodland Circle, as well as Steve and Nancy's home, 9 Crescent Drive. The family suggests memorials be made to the High Street United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 218, Franklin, VA 23851. Sullivan Sandra Lee Sullivan, 56, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 at Lee's Summit Medical Center after a brief illness. Survivors include her husband and soul mate of 36 years, John L. Theodore William Johnson departed this life on Wednesday Dec. 22, 2010, at Southside Regional Medical Center in Petersburg, Va. Theodore (Ted) was born on Sept. 27, 1932, in Erie, Pa., to the late Junius and Beulah Johnson., He received his formal education from East High School and participated on the school swim team. He also spent two years at Edinboro State College in the Erie area. He entered the United States, and served two years on active duty. BATCHELOR, Wilbur Alan "Chipper," 65, of Richmond, passed away December 18, 2010.
