Blackburn, John Ashley

BLACKBURN, John Ashley, passed away peacefully at his home in Charlottesville, on January 20, 2009, surrounded by his loving family. Jack was born November 29, 1941 to Stephen John and Ruth Johnson Blackburn in Colora, Md.; and is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty Blackburn; sister, Dawn Blackburn Sobocinski of Wilmington, Del.; daughter, Heidi Blackburn Helmers of Louisville, Ky.; son, John Ashley Blackburn Jr. of Lexington, Va.; and his four beloved grandchildren. Jack was educated at Western Maryland College and Indiana University, served overseas in the United States Army and then began a career in college admissions as Director of Admission at Mary Baldwin College in 1968. In 1979, he was hired by then-Dean of Admission John T. Casteen III to become an associate dean at the University of Virginia. Jack was appointed Dean of Admission in 1985 and served in that role until his death. Blackburn worked tirelessly to make UVA's student population more racially, internationally and socioeconomically diverse while also dramatically raising the overall academic profile of the University. Blackburn created an outreach office within Admission to encourage highly qualified African-American students to apply and accept offers of admission; as a result, UVA's African-American students graduate at the highest rate of any public university in America. He pushed for increased financial aid for students and abolished the University's early-decision admission process, which he felt provided undue advantage to students from families affluent enough to commit to the University without first seeing a financial aid offer. Blackburn was instrumental in creating the AccessUVA financial aid program, under which it accepted in-state students from lower income families to receive a full scholarship and promoted it enthusiastically, repeatedly visiting high schools in communities all over the Commonwealth, from Tangier Island to Grundy. He often said, "There are smart kids everywhere." In recognition of his service to the University, Blackburn received the Thomas Jefferson Award, the highest honor given to a member of the University community, in 2008. Blackburn also served as a trustee to the College Board and as an Elder at Westminster Presbyterian Church. His grace, integrity and extraordinary generosity will be missed, but his legacy endures in the lives of the countless people he has touched throughout his life. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 24, at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 190 Rugby Road, Charlottesville. A reception will follow at Alumni Hall, 211 Emmet Street. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the John A. Blackburn Endowed Scholarship for AccessUVA, Office of Development and Public Affairs, Attn: Gift Accounting, P.O. Box 400807, Charlottesville, Va. 22904; the Jack and Betty Blackburn Endowed Jefferson Scholarship, Jefferson Scholars Foundation, P.O. Box 400891, Charlottesville, Va. 22904; or the Westminster Church Endowment Funds, P.O. Box 3365, Charlottesville, Va. 22903.

Carr, Marie Hoover

Marie Hoover Carr, efficient executive secretary, selfless mother and wife, deft sinker of difficult putts, passed away on January 16, 2009, while visiting her daughter in Miami. She was 83. A 20-year resident of The Waterfront, Marie started and ran the Nifty Niners: a golf league for women who only had time to play nine holes. She also belonged to the Newcomers Club, where she her talents as a cook and seamestress were much admired. Born in Binghamton, N.Y., on July 21, 1925, Marie was a talented writer, her work was sadly overlooked by her Binghamton Central High School English teacher, who favored Marie's friend and classmate, Rod Serling. Despite the snub, Marie received a scholarship to continue her education in New York City in 1943. But when her brother was taken prisoner of war in the South Pacific during World War II, Marie had to leave school to help raise her nephew. She became a secretary, eventually rising to executive secretary to the general manager of General Electric where she briefly worked for then-actor Ronald Reagan, who hosted General Electric Theater. Miffed that he always called her Mary, she refused to vote for him when he ran for president. It was also at GE that Marie Hoover met Joseph Carr. Smitten with her porcelain skin, jitterbug dancing and high standards, he asked her out for New Year's Eve, 1952 and she turned him down. But when her date got stuck in a blizzard, she changed her mind. They married in July 1956. Marie quit work in order to raise her family: Zsa Zsa the collie, followed by daughter Heidi. The family lived first in Huntsville, Ala., then in Manassas, Va. When Heidi headed for college, Marie returned to school herself, to brush up on her secretarial skills. The instructor soon realized that she couldn't teach Marie anything, and recommended her for several jobs. Marie chose an accounting firm close to her home: Derieux, Baker, Thompson and Witt, later Deloitte and Touche, where she worked several years as office manager. After retiring in 1989, Marie and Joe built their dream home at Smith Mountain Lake. For two decades, Marie thoroughly enjoyed boating, shopping at the boutiques, volunteering at community events, golfing at The Waterfront and Westlake, baking Christmas cookies and knitting scarves for friends and -despite being a teetotaler -attending the SML Wine Festival. She is survived by husband Joseph; daughter, Heidi Marie; and granddogs, Foxy and Farrah. She was predeceased by parents, Glenn and Beatrice Hoover; siblings, Christine, George and Glen Hoover; and nephews, Jim Witkowski, Jeff Hoover and Ken Hoover. A Mass of Ressurrection will be celebrated 1 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, 2009, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Moneta. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the Mass. The family will receive friends at their home afterward. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Marie's name to the charity of your choice. Arrangements by BurchMessier Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 317 W. Drewry, Patty Moncure

DREWRY, Patty Moncure, widow of Thomas Watkins Drewry, died peacefully at home on January 18, 2009. The younger daughter of the late William Augustus Moncure and Margaret Tinsley Moncure, Mrs. Drewry was born in Richmond in 1917. She grew up at the family home "Picquenocque" in Henrico County, as part of an exceptionally close-knit extended family, to which she was devoted. She was graduated from Collegiate School and attended Sweetbriar College. Mrs. Drewry worked at the Richmond News Leader for several years and served as a volunteer nurse's aid at the Medical College of Virginia during World War II. After their marriage in 1949, she and her husband lived briefly in Martinsville before moving to Williamsburg, where they raised their children at "Charlton House" in the Historic Area until his death in 1969, after which she made her home in Richmond. A member of Richmond's Second Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Drewry lived out the spirit of her faith and supported the Church's missions in a myriad of ways each day. Like her mother and her husband, she always quietly found ways to help others, both through organizations such as Meals on Wheels (for which she served as a longtime driver) and through generous individual acts of thoughtful kindness. Mrs. Drewry pursued her interests in historic preservation through active membership in the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities and several Virginia county historical societies. She loved to garden, was a prize-winning flower arranger and was long involved in the Garden Club of Virginia. She was also a member of The Woman's Club, the Colonial Dames, the Country Club of Virginia and a former member of the Quarry Club and the Tuckahoe Woman's Club. The last, and longest, surviving of the seven Moncure children, Mrs. Drewry was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Moncure Johnson; and their brothers, William Augustus Moncure Jr., Thomas Rutherfoord Moncure, James Garland Tinsley Moncure, Eustace Conway Moncure and John Moncure. She is survived by her son, William Sidney Drewry II of Williamsburg; her daughter and son-in-law, Virginia Watkins Drewry and Howard Curtiss Martin, of Alexandria; her granddaughter, Abigail Tinsley Moncure Martin of Alexandria and Williamstown, Massachusetts; two sisters-in-law, Julia Jones Moncure and Mary Cox Moncure, both of Richmond; the rest of the extended Moncure and Tinsley connection, including a host of nieces and nephews and their families and many friends. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Thursday, January 22, at Westminster Canterbury, 1600 Westbrook Avenue, Richmond. The interment will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 23, at Hollywood Cemetery, 412 South Cherry Street, Richmond. After the interment, Mrs. Drewry's life will be celebrated at an 11 a.m. memorial service at Second Presbyterian Church, 5 North Fifth Street (between Franklin and Main Streets), Richmond. A reception will follow the church service. Mrs. Drewry's family asks that those who loved her honor her memory by continuing to give of themselves to others. Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in lieu of flowers, might contribute to the Thomas Watkins Drewry and Patty Moncure Drewry Scholarship Fund at the Virginia Tech Mechanical Engineering Department, 100 Randolph Hall, Blacksburg, Va. 24061, or a charity of their choice.

Kainer, John Edward

John Edward Kainer VIRGINIA BEACH - After a valiant battle with brain cancer, John Edward Kainer peacefully passed away Jan. 18, 2009 surrounded by friends and family. He was 41 years old. John lived his life with a passion and intensity that resulted in not only incredible achievements and accolades, but more importantly, tremendous personal relationships and friendships that supported him throughout his 11-year battle with cancer. John's wife and children were the core of this support and brought immense joy to his life. John attended the United States Naval Academy, wrestled all four years, and graduated in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. His first assignment was SEAL training in Coronado, Calif. Graduating with BUD/S Class 166, John embarked on an exemplary Naval career. His assignments included SEAL Team Three, Naval Special Warfare Unit Eight, SEAL Team Two and then Naval Special Warfare Development Group. Receiving numerous commendations and always setting high standards, he was on the path to an outstanding career as a SEAL. During a training exercise, John experienced a seizure while in the middle of a parachute jump. He skillfully deployed his parachute despite the seizure and landed safely. The ensuing medical evaluation, however, revealed a brain tumor that resulted in his medical discharge from the Navy in 1999. Although this medical condition cut short a stellar Naval career, the spirit of competition that resides in every SEAL remained strong. In the subsequent years following the diagnosis and treatment, John completed three marathons, two Raid Gauloises adventure races and two Ironman races. He was the epitome of a true warrior, competitor and dignified individual. In civilian life, John worked for Ethicon Endo-Surgery Inc, EMC Corporation, and during the last five years with DePuy Orthopaedics as a sales manager for joint replacement products. He worked directly with orthopaedic surgeons, earning their respect and friendship as evidenced by the support the medical community provided him in his final weeks. A loving father and husband, John is survived by his wife and tireless caregiver, Betsy Byron Kainer, formerly of Asheville, N.C., whom he married in 1999; his three children: Jack 7, Gini 5, and Maddie 3; his mother, Fran Yongue Kellner and her husband William Kellner of Lafayette, La.; his father, Edward Lester Kainer and stepmother Ginger of Houston, Texas. John is also survived by two brothers, James and Paul Kainer and his grandmother, Virginia Yongue, all of Lafayette. He was preceded in death by his brother, Mike Kainer. The Kainer family would like to extend their gratitude for all the incredible support, prayers, and care they received from friends and family, the doctors, nurses, and staff at the National Institutes of Health, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Professional Healthcare Resources, Elder Care at Home and Sentara Hospice. A memorial celebrating his life will take place at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base Friday at 10 a.m. Military uniform is optional. A committal ceremony at the U.S. Naval Academy Columbarium will take place on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Team Kainer in care of Anne Spillane, 1537 W. Little Neck Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23452., Charities

Lind-Clarke, Dolores

LIND-CLARKE, Dolores, 71, of Chesterfield, passed away Monday, January 19, 2009, after a long courageous battle with cancer. She leaves behind her very devoted and loving daughter, Mary Poreau; sister, Mary Flexer and her husband, Harry, of Volusia, Fla., and their children. She also leaves behind an extremely longtime friend, Joanne Reemsten, her daughter and Dolores' godchild, Jade McKee-Pate, Teresa Oley and daughters, Chawanta and Leah Fortune; another loving and longtime friend, Rea Lind Campbell; and dear friend, Jean Marrow. Other family members we wish not to forget are Leonard Lee "Junie" Clarke and Lenny Clarke, also, her niece, Lisa Pope, and numerous other nieces. Dolores retired from Philip Morris in November of 1985. She worked later for a family-owned business as a buyer for Hampton House, a bridal-registry and antique shop, until February 2008. Dolores was a loving mother to her daughter, Mary, as well as a true and loving friend, and so much more to those she leaves behind. She was a woman who had much strength, which was all developed by her love for God and Jesus Christ, our Lord. And we would be amiss if Rev. Msgr. Michael S.C. Schmeid went unmentioned as a dear and close friend and counselor in Christ. Dolores had many loves in life; her main love of late was to spend time with friends, but when unable, her dogs were her main love and source of immense comfort. With women in our lives like Dolores, we will still continue to draw from her immense strength and love of Christ. Words cannot express how much she will truly be missed. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rte. 10). Her funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Augustine Catholic Church. Interment will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

McCann, Katharine Ann

On Thursday, January 15, 2009, at Carilion Memorial Hospital, Roanoke, Va., surrounded by family, the Lord took my Katie home to Heaven. Katie was born on March 18, 1938, in Hamilton, N.Y., the first of six children of Harold Hunt Evans (deceased) and Doris Church Evans. Following graduation from Hamilton High School in 1956 she married Robert M. "Bob" Waldbillig of Peekskill, N.Y., and began her new life as the wife of an Air Force pilot and a mother. They had a wonderful marriage and three children: Linda M. Stewart (Henry) and their four children of Atascadero, Calif., Robert S. Waldbillig of Linden, N.C., and Michael W. Waldbillig (Michelle) and their four children of Tucson, Aria. Air Force assignments took the family to several locations in the United States as well as England and Germany and Katie made sure there was a loving family home regardless of the location., Lt. Col. Bob Waldbillig died in an aircraft accident in Germany in September, 1975. In 1976 Katie and her children returned to Clovis, N.M., near Cannon Air Force Base, the location of an earlier assignment., On August 18, 1979, Katie and Col. Robert I. "Bob" McCann, of Dedham, Mass., were married in the chapel at Cannon AFB. As a result of their marriage Katie gained four stepdaughters: Kelly M. Maffeo (Robert) and their three children, of Foxborough, Mass., Penny E. Pennington (John) and her two children, of Warrenton, Va., Maureen McCann and her two children, of Walpole, Mass., and Stephanie Elia (Dennis), of Quincy, Mass. Katie loved them all as her own and that love was reciprocated., For the next almost 30 years Bob and Katie lived and enjoyed life to its fullest. Katie knew all too well the hardships and demands of military life and worked hard to help other military families particularly those who lost a spouse on active duty. After retirement from the Air Force they traveled extensively and built their own aircraft which they flew all over the United States. She recalled prior to her death, "I have really lived life.", In addition to her mother, husband, children, and stepchildren Katie is survived by her sisters, Jacqueline Jones, of Hamilton, N.Y., Susan Benedict, of Erieville, N.Y., Judy Moody (Maurice), of Harpswell, Maine, Patricia Williams, of Albuquerque, N.M.; brother, L. Vincent Evans (Lynn) of Syracuse, N.Y.; 15 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and 16 nieces and nephews., "Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she smiles at the future. She opens her mouth in wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. She looks well to the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and bless her; her husband also, and he praises her, saying: "Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all." Proverbs 31: 25-29, will be at the Fort Myer Post Chapel with internment to follow in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., Charities

Trost, Samantha Jo

Samantha Jo Trost VIRGINIA BEACH - Samantha Jo Trost, 20, lost her courageous battle with cancer Jan. 19, 2009, surrounded by her family and friends. After five years she is finally pain free and whole again. She is survived by her parents, Melia and Joseph; her loving sister, Kristen; and her beloved Jordan Anderson. She is also survived by her grandparents, Ann and Hank Trost of Virginia Beach, and Charlotte Davies of Stafford, and her Uncle Carl and his wife Ann Trost of Guam; her aunts, Michelle and her husband Mark Carlson of Culpepper, Megan and her husband Kendall Ferguson of Stafford; numerous cousins, her puppy Stella, the sisters of Epsilon Sigma Alpha, and the student body of ECU. Sam loved life. She loved people. She loved helping people. Those of us lucky enough to know Sam are forever blessed. She had a way of making you love her and those around her by just smiling. Her love of life was shown through her artwork, jewelry, and her willingness to help everyone. Cancer might have taken her life but she had the last laugh. No matter how hard the cancer or the cure attacked her she could still smile through it. Everyday she would smile at strangers and friends alike, and we would forget about her pain for a short moment. So today and every day, share a little bit of Sam with everyone, smile at them and make their day a little better. That is what Sam would do. So be angry, be mad, yell, cry, and then smile. A celebration of Sam's life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at London Bridge Baptist Church, Potters Road, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Emmanuel Lutheran Church c/o Sam's Fund so she can continue helping children and their families who are touched by childhood cancer.
