Jan 23, 2009 Annie Louise Hensley Martin, 88, of Fieldale, died Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009, at Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville. She was born in Henry County on Feb. 17, 1920, to William Thomas Hensley and Dollie Mae Merriman Hensley. She was a charter member of Pleasant Grove Christian Church and retired from Fieldcrest Mills with 29 years of service. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Martin; five brothers, J.E. Hensley, Bill Hensley, Woodrow Hensley, David Hensley and Carl Burton Hensley; and two sisters, Mary Sue Winn and Narva Lee Roberts. Surviving are a son, Tommy R. Martin of Pleasant Grove; a daughter, Patricia C. Meadows of Reidsville, N.C.; a sister, Ruth Shields of Martinsville; two brothers, Hubert Hensley and Billy Hensley, both of Ridgeway; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the South Chapel of Bassett Funeral Service with the Rev. Clyde Earles officiating. Burial will be in the Horsepasture Christian Church cemetery. BIEROWSKI, Margaret, 91, peacefully passed away at Our Lady of Hope Health Center on January 22, 2009. Widow of Joseph Bierowski Sr., she is survived by four sons, John (Carolyn) of Chesterfield, Va., Jim (Betsy) of St. Croix, V.I., Joe Jr. (Aimee) of Orange, Conn., and Thomas (Linda) of Midlothian, Va.; three daughters, Ann (Mike) Draper of Glen Allen, Va., Jody (Gillie) Jenkins of Kents Store, Va. and Judy Dickerson of Scottsdale, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Margaret led a fulfilling life as wife, mother and community volunteer culminating in her reward as Outstanding Chesterfield County Senior Citizen. She was devoted to the Rosary, leading a prayer group even into her final years. As founding members of the Church of the Epiphany, Margaret and her husband ministered to countless senior citizens in the community and made a difference in the lives of many. She was born on Aug. 21, 1926, in Pittsylvania County, to Joseph Millner and Effie Gravely Millner. They preceded her in death. Surviving are a daughter, Connie Coston of Philadelphia; two sisters, Effie O'Neal West of Media, Pa., and Hazel Evans of Danville; and three brothers, Lonnie Millner of Chatham, and Marvin Millner and Larry Millner, both of Martinsville. "Jack" and Hazel Ferrell. Bill loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a 1959 graduate of Oscar Smith High School. He was a member of Good Hope United Methodist Church, a past Master of Great Bridge Masonic Lodge No. 257, a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Royal Arch. Survivors include his loving wife of 47 years, Arline O. Ferrell; two children, Arlene Maney and Ted Ferrell and wife Connie; four grandchildren, Melissa Hendrix, Amanda Maney, Taylor Ferrell and Brooke Ferrell; two great-grandchildren, Emily Hendrix and Ashlynn Castle; two sisters, Eloise England and Kathleen Bennett. Inez Blair Gilhooly, a longtime Annapolis, Md., resident and public school teacher in Anne Arundel County who was born and raised in Roanoke, Va., died on Friday, January 23, 2009, at Skyway Manor, Cape St. Claire, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. She was 79. Mrs. Gilhooly was born on October 10, 1929, in Roanoke, Va., to the late Bryant and Myrtle Johnson. She attended Concord College in Athens, W.Va., and moved to Maryland in 1952. She taught at Linthicum, Belvedere and Folger McKinsey elementary schools for many years, and retired from Central Special Education Center in Edgewater, Md. She enjoyed tennis, golf at the United States Naval Academy, photography, travel and spending time with her family and grandchildren. She was a partner with her husband in Schoolyard Stables, which has operated in Maryland race tracks since 1982. She is survived by her husband, Eugene E. Gilhooly, of Baltimore; her daughters, Brenda Gilhooly, of Middletown, N.Y., and Nancy Purdy, of Forest Hill, Md.; four grandchildren, Juliana and Timothy Bayne and Christopher and Cara Purdy; her sister, Rosemary Habel, of Roanoke, Va.; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Gillard served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and retired from TRW, Cambridge, Mass. after 42 years of service. He was Past Master of Cosmopolitan Lodge A.F. & A.M., Stoughton, Mass. and Macedonian Lodge, A.F. & A.M. in Quincy, Mass., as well as Black Heath Lodge, A.F. & A.M. in Midlothian, Va., and a past District Deputy Grand Master of Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. He was a member of Bethesda Lodge No. 30, Order of the Odd Fellows, Braintree, Mass., a Past Patron of Keystone Chapter No. 18, Canton Chapter No. 321, and Contentment Chapter No. 184, Order of the Eastern Star, a Past Grand Representative to Ontario in Massachusetts, and a member of the Kilwinning Club of Boston, Mass. Elliot loved people and was always there to give a helping hand. She was born May 14, 1918, in Mount Jackson, to Abner Norman Green Sr. and Mary Ellen Williams Green. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Mervin "Stoney" Eugene Litten on May 15, 1999; two sons, Donald R. Litten and Carroll E. Litten; and three brothers and two sisters. She was a lifelong member of Valley Central Church in New Market where she formerly taught Sunday school, was church pianist and was a member of several church circles. She was employed at Byrd/Frederickson Orchards for 25 years. Surviving are a daughter, Judy Ann Hopson of Knoxville, Tenn.; five sons, James E. "Jim" Litten and Harry Lee Litten, both of Stuart, Phillip W. Litten of Woodstock, and Gary R. Litten and Gregory Litten, both of Edinburg; three sisters, Nina Will and Ruby Green, both of Skyline Terrace Nursing Home in Woodstock, and Patsy Weaver of Tenth Legion; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her devoted husband of 39 years, Clarence Grubbs; sons, Chris and his wife, Amber, and David Grubbs; one daughter, Becky Wyatt; six grandchildren, Isaac, Samuel, Rosie, and Clara Grubbs, David Seth Grubbs, and Danny Ray Wyatt Jr.; and a host of loving family members and friends. Carolyn was born June 8, 1944 in Richmond, Virginia, daughter of the late Richard and Gladys Campbell. She retired from the International Mission Board and also served as church secretary of Oak Hall Baptist Church for several years. Carolyn was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and friend, and she will be greatly missed. Mr. Harrell was predeceased by his parents, Clem and Eva Carr Harrell and seven of his nine brothers and sisters. Mr. Harrell was a native of Suffolk, a member of Westhaven Baptist Church and a member of more than 60 years of the Suffolk Masonic Lodge No. 30. Mr. Harrell is also a veteran, serving his country proudly in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Mr. Harrell is survived by his wife, Florence Hobbs Harrell; a sister, Goldie Mae Wright; and a brother, Clinton Harrell, of Suffolk. Also surviving Mr. Harrell are many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence L. Magri; and her sisters, Florence R. Richardson and Helen R. McDowell. Mrs. Magri was a charter member and past-president of the Women's Traffic Club of Richmond. She was secretary-treasurer of the H.C. Cockrell Bonded Warehouse Corp. and the Virginia Bonded Warehouse Corp., retiring in 1983. She is survived by her niece, Pattie Magri Bevan and her husband, Duncan, of Richmond; and her nephew, Walter Richardson and his wife, Mary Sue, of Silver Spring, Md.; and five great-nephews. Aunt Sarah will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor, her love of family and her generosity to all. She will be greatly missed. Merrick, Keegan Francis

MERRICK, Keegan Francis, born July 12, 1977, passed away on January 22, 2009. He was a loving husband and father and a loyal friend with a unique sense of humor. His love for animals was surpassed only by his love for his friends and family. He is survived by his wife, Halliday; his daughter, Owyn Rosi; his mother, Bree; his father, Ted; his brother, Quinn; his sister, Bianca; his niece, Isabelle; and his grandmother, Frances Fife. He served with distinction as an Animal Control Officer for the City of Richmond, and in 2006 was named Officer of the Year by the Virginia Animal Control Association. He also helped to organize and spearhead the Virginia Animal Fighting Task Force. Keegan recently received his Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Virginia Commonwealth University, graduating cum laude. Although his life was far too short, his impact was deep and he will be deeply missed. Keegan's life will be honored with a family ceremony. Mrs. Miller was very active in the Roswell Ramblers (a senior group) and did a lot of volunteer work. She won numerous gold medals in the Senior Olympics. WEATHERFORD, Audrey B., of Richmond, Va., went to be with her Lord on January 22, 2009, at the age of 81. Audrey was born on December 13, 1927. On October 19, 1938, she contracted polio and remained in Crippled Children's Hospital until the spring of 1940. She was told that she would never walk again. Due to her determination, she has walked ever since, until Post-Polio Syndrome took away that ability. She was a member of Providence United Methodist Church for 42 years and sang in the choir for 40 years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women at Providence, and she was a member of the Ivy Girls (ladies who worked at Thalhimer's downtown). She was a member of Manchester Chapter #53 Order of the Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, John B. Weatherford; her parents, Willie Alvin Bell Sr. and Lola Orange Bell; one brother, Alvin Bell; one half-brother, George W. Davis; one stepbrother, Donald R. Ezzell; and a baby daughter, Carolyn Grace Weatherford. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Andra W. Warner and her husband, Scott; one dear grandson, Michael Scott "Pooter" Warner; a sister-in-law, Alice Bell; her lovely stepmother, Mildred E. Bell; and her wonderful caregiver and friend, Susan Leann Tuck and her family. She also leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. The family will receive friends at Bliley's-Chippenham Chapel on Saturday from 12 noon to 8 p.m., with an Eastern Star Memorial at 7 p.m. A funeral service will be held at Providence United Methodist Church on Sunday at 3 p.m., with burial in the church cemetery. He spent Wednesday nights listening and marveling at the talents of young Jonathan Dillon at T's Market. He was a storyteller of the best sort and he loved to fish and the two sometimes went hand-in-hand. He made quite a few memorable fishing expeditions with his buddy, Mike Atkins. He was a diehard sports fan, cheering for UVA, the Boston Red Sox and the Washington Redskins win or lose. He tinkered in woodworking making various furniture items for family and friends that will long be treasured. He loved cars and loved tinkering with them, with the exception of Peggy's infamous Volvo., He will be missed by his coffee drinking buddies from Coopers Cove, both at the local convenience store and Horne's Salvage where he would go to tell a good story and hear some local community gossip. Gene will be missed by many, for he never met a stranger and was always lending a helping hand. He volunteered his time and talents to many projects at the Coopers Cove Community Center.
