Adams Sr., Franklin

ADAMS, Franklin Sr., 74, of Mechanicsville went to be with his Lord on Sunday, January 25, 2009. Franklin was a loving husband, father, grandfather and devoted friend. He leaves to cherish his memories, his wife of 52 and a half years, Evelyn Mae Crisman Adams; two sons, Franklin Adams Jr. (Dorita) and Michael Paul Adams (Myra); four grandchildren, Chase Franklin, Stone Wallace, Brandon Michael and Cody Hunter; a special nephew, Elvin Paul Adams (Arlene); special niece, Ava Marie; nephews and nieces, Edward, Bryan, Sarah and Jamie; as well as many other loving family and friends. After 36 years of faithful devoted service as heavy equipment operator/foreman, Franklin retired from VDOT. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28 at the Bennett Funeral Home, Mechanicsville Chapel, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd., where services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, January 29.

ANTHONY, Richard Bryant Sr., 79, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 24, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jane Edwards Anthony; three sons and their wives, Dick and Pam Anthony of Richmond, Fred and Beverly Anthony of Roanoke and David and Becky Anthony of Richmond; grandchildren, Sara and her husband, Jon Lowery, Heather and her husband, John Larsen, all of Richmond, Matthew and his fianc‚e, Katie Jansma, of Baxter, Minn., Erin, Kristin, Adam, Alyssa, Tyler and Elizabeth; great-grandchildren, Jackson and Ellie; sister, Estelle Grant of Greensboro, N.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.O. Anthony Sr.; brothers, J.O. Anthony Jr. and J. Charles Anthony; sisters, Helen Schultz and Hurley Brooks. Mr. Anthony served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a lifelong educator retiring in 1988 from Henrico County Schools, having served for 28 years at Douglas S. Freeman High School, where he was principal from 1973 to 1986. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd. His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at Immanuel Baptist Church, 3601 Monument Ave., with burial to follow at Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Jan 27, 2009 NORTH CAROLINA — Barbara Williams Gardner, 56, of Trinity, died Jan. 25, 2009, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born in Martinsville, Va., on July 22, 1952, to James and Dorothy Gauldin Williams. She previously was associated with Ed Price and Associates before becoming owner and operator of Archway Professional Realty in Archdale. She was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are her husband, James "Jim" Gardner of the home; two daughters, Lori Davis Cannon of Ridgeway, Va., and Jamie Bryant Payne of Thomasville; two sons, Jeremy Paul Gardner of the home and Gary "Tommy" Davis Jr. of Martinsville; 10 grandchildren; and a sister, Ann Bailey of Thomasville. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Pilot View Baptist Church with Pastors Bob Summers and Tom Barron officiating. Burial will be in Floral Garden Memorial Park Cemetery. Basham, John Howard

in 1988. He was a personal accountant for a host of private businesses during his lifetime. He served as worship leader for the First Church of God in Oak Hill, Charleston and Christiansburg and Treasurer and Chairman of the Covenant Community Church of Salem. He was one of the last living Participates of the Church of God's National Basketball Championships held in the late 1930's in Anderson, Ind., while playing for the Charleston Main Street Church team. Howard is survived by his loving wife, Audra Marie Basham. He will be sadly missed by his daughter, Joan Bratton and husband, Bob; his son, John, Jr. and wife, Connie all of Charleston, W.Va.; his step children, Patricia Nicewander and husband, Alan of Monterey, Calif., John C. Pfeil and wife, Susie, Timothy Pfeil and wife, Jessie all of Charleston, W.Va., Brenda David and Husband, Alan of Milwaukee, Wis. and Diane Lockard and Jim Howarth currently of Brunswick, Ga.; nine grandchildren and six greatgrandchildren to carry on his memory and his brother, Hank Basham of Panama City, Fla. Worther Guy Becker Jr., 92, of Petersburg died on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, Worther Guy Becker Sr. and Lillian Reynolds Becker, and a sister, Peggy Coleburn. Ace was a graduate of Virginia Tech and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war he joined his father running the family business, Becker Lumber Company. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eleanor Becker; children, Cheri Becker, Leslie Suttle, Ellie McDaniel and husband, David, W. Guy Becker III and wife, Karen, and Reynolds Becker and wife, Beverly; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister, Virginia Heffner of Clinton, S.C.; and a brother, Reynolds Becker of Richmond, Va. Mrs. Dorothy Rene Jones Bolling, 76, of 14517 Gatewood Rd. Dewitt, Va., entered into eternal rest peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009 at her residence. She was a native of Sussex County and the daughter of the late Walter and Pearl Parker Jones. She attended Sussex County Public Schools. At an early age she confessed and became a member of the Rocky Mount Baptist Church, Mckenney. She was widow of Clyde Bolling. Mrs. Bolling was a retired cook with many years of dedicated service at Kings Barbeque No. 1, Washington St., Petersburg. She also worked as a bus aide for Dinwiddie County School System until her health declined. She was preceded in death by one great-granddaughter, Domonique M. Batts. She leaves to cherish fond memories of her: two sons, Larry T. Bolling (Nadine) of Petersburg and James Barry Bolling of Dewitt; four sisters, Thelma Hill and Catherine Reed of Jarratt, Va., Stella Jones of Newport News, Va. and Barbara Jones of New York; 8 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 13 nieces; 11 nephews; and a host of great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins other relatives and friends, among them several devoted neighbors, Tyrone and Jerri Wyatt and James Wynn and family and her loving pet, Hooch. Bricchi, Carmine

BRICCHI, Carmine, 80, of Jarratt, Va., died on Sunday, January 25, 2009. Mr. Bricchi was born on November 12, 1928 in New York City and lived in Babylon, Long Island, N.Y. He was a retired detective, 1st grade, from Suffolk County Police and was a Licensed Private Investigator, New York State. He then moved to Florida, and later, to Jarratt, Va. with his wife, Rosemarie, who passed away in 2001. He was a veteran with the U.S. Army having served in the Korean Conflict as Staff Sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart, Combat Badge, Korean Ribbon with three battle stars Commendation Medal and 10 other ribbons. Mr. Bricchi is survived by a daughter, Maria Saunders, Captain, USAR, and husband, Clay, of Colonial Heights; and one brother, Henry Bricchi of New York. A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. on Thursday, January 29, 2009, in The Church of Sacred Heart, 4415 County Drive, New Bohemia, with Father Jay Wagner, Celebrant. , he began his career at Bay Chevrolet where he worked in the parts department for more than 20 years. Harry was an active member of Haygood United Methodist Church since 1959 where he taught Sunday school for many years. He was a lay leader of the church, served on the Pastor Parish Committee, Church Council, Grounds Committee, and was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Men. When Mr. Bunch wasn't working, serving the church, he enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family and friends. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, son, brother, grandfather and friend. He will be deeply missed. Jan 27, 2009 Douglas Edward Eanes Sr., 47, of Villa Heights, died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009, at his home. He was born in Martinsville on July 21, 1961, to Billy Edward Eanes and Clara Bryant Eanes. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are one son, Douglas Eanes Jr. of Hollywood, Md.; one daughter, Crystal Eanes of Bassett; three grandchildren; and one aunt. KENNEDY, Max C., 79, passed away January 23, 2009. He was born August 24, 1929 in Charlottesville, Va. He attended local schools including the University of Virginia and the University of Virginia Law School. Mr. Kennedy spent two years in military service for his country during the Korean conflict. After his military service, he joined Sperry Marine Corporation in 1956, ultimately serving as General Counsel until his retirement in 1993. Mr. Kennedy also provided legal services to his friends. Mr. Kennedy was preceded in death by his parents, Rushie L. and George C. Kennedy; and his wife, Patricia Barber Kennedy. As a young man he was a member of the Boy Scouts and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. Mr. Kennedy was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity, the Virginia State Bar, Charlottesville- Albemarle Bar Association, past chairman of the Board of Zoning Appeals for Albemarle County, a lifetime member of the University of Virginia Alumni Association, a lifetime member of the Elks Club and a member of Farmington Country Club. He was an accomplished golfer and one of Max's favorite pastimes was playing golf with his friends. Left to cherish his memory are Nancy Dettor, Col. L. C. "Buddy" LaFon USA-Ret., and many longtime friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 11 a.m. at the University of Virginia Chapel, with the Rev. Jan 27, 2009 Marvin Franklin Hobson, of 410 Fifth St., Martinsville, owner and operator of Hobson Electric Co. in Martinsville for 54 years, died Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was 89. Hobson was born in Martinsville on Aug. 4, 1919, to John Hobson and Gracie Davis Hobson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Hobson. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post 78 and Masonic Lodge 111. He was a member of St. Paul High Street Baptist Church, where he was chairman emeritus of the trustee board and on the usher board. Surviving are his wife, Bessie Stone Hobson of the home; a daughter, Marvina H. Edwards of Grand Prairie, Texas; a son, Johannes Hobson of Roanoke; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul High Street Baptist Church, with the Rev. William A. Shackleford Sr. officiating. McCULLOUGH, John L. "Jack", 88, died January 24, 2009, at The Hermitage, in Richmond, after a long and courageous struggle with Alzheimer's disease. A native of Chattanooga, Tenn., he was a graduate of the Baylor School and Vanderbilt University. Immediately after college, he entered naval officers' training at Columbia University. He served as skipper of P.T. boats in the Atlantic and Pacific and as assistant navigator on a main sweeper after the Japanese surrender. In 1955, he entered the ministry graduating from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary during its first phase. A strong advocate of civil rights, after serving churches in North Carolina and Virginia, he spent 20 years with the Virginia Department of Rehabilitative Services. Survivors are his wife, Louise; son, Lawrence III and his wife, Pam; daughter and son-in-law, the Reverends Mary Louise McCullough and Michael Wilson; two grandsons, Marcus McCullough and Evan Coakley; and brother, Lt. Col. (ret.) Donald T. McCullough and his wife, Mitzie. Jack was a member of Ginter Park Baptist Church. McMICHAEL, Gloria Trainum, 72, of Highland Springs, widow of William Thomas McMichael Jr., passed away Saturday, January 24, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents, Granville Carlton Trainum and Catherine Barlow Heffler; and stepfather, Roland Heffler. She is survived by her brother, Granville Carlton "Buddy" Trainum Jr.; two daughters, G. Lynne McMichael and Catherine McMichael Elrod and husband, Michael; two sons, Carlton "Bubba" McMichael and wife, Crystal, and William "Tommy" McMichael and wife, Kim; three grandchildren, Ashley McMichael, Alexander McMichael and Camden Elrod; and a host of friends. She was a lifelong member of New Bridge Baptist Church, and active in their music program and WMU, and a beloved Sunday school teacher. She was a retiree of SunTrust Bank, and taught piano for many years. Mrs. Ada Savage Pulley of 486 Byrne St., Petersburg, Va., departed her life on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2009 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late Richard and Carrie Epps and the widow of the late Zachary "Zack" Savage Jr. She was born April 14, 1924 and graduated from Dinwiddie Training School. She was the proprietor of Ada's Grill, 116 South Ave., Petersburg, from 1943 to 1956. Ada also owned Ada's Variety Shop on Wythe Street for a number of years. She retired from Central State Hospital as a PCA in 1986 after 30 years of service and she also was a member of the Retired Club of Central State Hospital. She was a member of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church where she was a member of the Bethany Missionary Baptist Mass Choir and Nursing Guild Unit. Ada regularly attended Rocky Mount Baptist Church, McKenney, with her husband, who is a member. Ada's loving and precious memories will always remain with her husband, John A. Later, he received an Associates Degree in Nursing from John Tyler Community College. He worked as a dedicated nurse and nurse supervisor for over 30 years for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Sidney Semel SAN DIEGO - Sidney Semel, 86, formerly of Norfolk, died Jan. 24, 2009. Born in New York City and raised in Syracuse, Mr. Semel, son of the late Bernard Schneider and Sarah Coplon Schneider Semel, served in the Army during World War II, studying at Ohio State University in a secret program at its behest. After the war, he moved to Norfolk and much later to San Diego. He was an independent businessman and salesman par excellence, although his passion was for handball and, in later life, racquetball. Mr. Semel was also a lifelong supporter of the Red Cross, serving as an "on call" platelet donor for decades and earned a multi-gallon pin. Mr. Semel is survived by his three children, Judy (Reuven) Rohn of Virginia Beach, Bernie Semel (Tricia Pummill) of San Diego and Debbie (Mark) Evans of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Karen (Avi) Alpert and David Johnson; one great-granddaughter; two sisters, Harriet Orleans and Rita (Ramon) Cohen of Norfolk; and one brother, Robert (Jackie) Semel of Virginia Beach. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she sang in the choir for many years and also enjoyed sewing, upholstering, bowling and traveling. Martha Holland (Holly) Hicks Stover, of Roanoke, passed away unexpectedly on January 24, 2009. Holly was born on September 19, 1950. She was predeceased by her parents, Byron and Agnes Hicks. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband, Richard Stover; her sister, Celia Hicks Gehring and husband, Don, of Richmond; as well as her niece, Kathleen; nephew, Matthew and his wife, Anne Wesley and their sons, Thompson and Wright Gehring, all of Richmond. Additionally she is survived by Richard's siblings, Cookie, Suzanne and Bill; her aunts, Eleanor Whorley, of Lowry, Janet Carter, of Milford, Kay Hicks, of Lynchburg, her aunt Meda and uncle Thomas Hicks of Bedford; 18 cousins; her dear friends, who were like family to her, Erik, Violeta, Benjamin and Brendan Page, Alan and Rita Bennett, also survive her. Holly graduated from Patrick Henry High School, Southern Seminary and Virginia Western Community College. She was a devoted member of St. John's Episcopal Church, where she and Richard thoroughly enjoyed working on various volunteer committees. We will dearly miss her ready smile, sense of humor and her sweet and kind nature. A celebration of her life will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, 11 a.m., on Wednesday, January 28, 2009, with the Rev. Barkley Thompson officiating. Interment is private. Trice, William Haney "Billy"

TRICE, William "Billy" Haney, 87 years, 11 months, of Chesterfield, formerly of Doswell, died Saturday, January 24, 2009 at the Sitter-Barfoot Veterans Care Center in Richmond. Billy was preceded in death by his wife and best friend, Ethyl Rogers Trice. Billy and Ethel were married September 9, 1950, and lived together for 53 years. Billy retired from Richmond AT&T after more than 40 years of service as a long distance transmission engineer. After four years with AT&T, Billy joined the U.S. Army in November 1943, and served in the European Theater of Operations with the Corps of Combat Engineers, where he received numerous promotions. He received his discharge in May 1946 as a Sergeant Major, Batallion Headquarters, U.S. Army of Occupation, Germany. Upon his return to U.S., Billy returned to AT&T to continue his career until his retirement in 1980. Billy is survived by a niece, Mrs. Jane (Swaim) Thompson of California; and two nephews, David Swaim of Arizona and John Alphin of Florida. He also leaves to mourn his passing a whole host of close friends, who will miss him greatly. Billy Trice was a true gentleman and truly a gentle man. His remains rest at Bliley's-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and where funeral services will be held 12 noon Thursday. The Lord called home to rest our beloved mother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend, Ms. Tammy C. Tucker, 45, of 3537 George St., Petersburg, Va., after a period of declining health early Saturday morning, Jan. 24, 2009, for God makes no mistakes. At an early age, she confessed Christ and joined Little Zion Baptist Church, Carson, Va. She was educated in the Dinwiddie County Public School system. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph (Joe) A. Tucker Sr. She leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Deonta Tucker (Antoinette) and Demario Tucker, both of Petersburg; two sisters, Cassanora Smithson (Carl) of Petersburg, and Maria Jones (Steve) of Prince George, Va.; three brothers, Joseph "Pete" A. Tucker Jr. (Tammy) and Dunnie Tucker (JoAnn), both of Petersburg, and Lloyd Tucker (Sandra) of Ettrick, Va.; two aunts, Gladys Parham of Petersburg, and Diane Irby (Charles) of Forestville, Md.; two uncles, Deacon John Tucker of Prince George, Va. and Robert Wilson (Lucille) of Petersburg; eight nieces, among them three that were very devoted: Crissandra Mabry (Clint), Clasha Bailey (Ryan) and Kelisa Vaughan (Cajuin), all of Petersburg; three nephews, five great nieces, two great nephews, cousins, four devoted cousins, Gloria "GloPop" Wilson, LaRose Tennessee and Barbara Malette, all of Peterburg, and Dina Briggs of Carson, Va. and a host of loving friends. WATSON, Mrs. Jearlene Gladys, took hold of God's Hand when she heard His call on Friday, January 23, 2009. Jearlene was the daughter of the late Andrew and Fannie Pearl Johnson. She was born on April 28, 1943 and raised in Richmond, Va. She attended Richmond Public Schools. Jearlene was a member of the 31st Street Baptist Church. She resided at 2411 2nd Ave., Richmond, Va. Jearlene met Charles and they dated, fell in love and later they were married on August 23, 1960. Charles and Jearlene had been married for 48 years. Within this union were born eight children. She was a devoted wife, and a loving and caring mother and grandmother. Jearlene leaves to cherish her memory a loving husband, Charles Watson Sr.; six sons, Charles Watson Jr., Johnathan Watson, Keith and Kelvin Watson, Timothy Watson, and Raymond Watson; two daughters, Mrs. Cheryl Gladys Watson Taylor and Sylvia Watson; one son-in-law, Mr. Joseph Taylor Jr.; one devoted friend, Charlene Gay; 18 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Marilyn Pettaway; four brothers, Mr. Melvin Johnson Sr., Mr. Alvin Johnson Sr., Mr. Andrew Johnson, and Mr. Floyd Johnson; one brother-in-law, Mr. Jesse Pettaway; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Nicole Johnson and Mrs. Doris Johnson; and a large host of nieces and nephews, other loving family and friends. WEBBER, Bernard B. "Barney," of Richmond, passed away January 25, 2009. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Arlyn Webber; his only daughter, Adrienne "A.J." Fisher; son-in-law, Joe Fisher; and two devoted grandchildren, Stefany and Michael Fisher. He was a WWII veteran and a proud member of Patton's 3rd Army. Barney enjoyed many years of tennis at Raintree Swim and Racquet Club, was an avid trader in the stock market and had a love for traveling. He also had a passion for family and thought of his friends as extended family. Barney never met a stranger and marched to the beat of his own drum. Samuel Lewis Welch, 89, of McKenney, Va., died Saturday, Jan. 24, 2009. He was born in Mason County, W.V., the son of the late Arleigh J. and Elizabeth Meadows Welch. Mr. Welch was retired from the U.S. Army as a sergeant first class, and was a veteran of WWII and the post-Korean War. Since his retirement, Mr. Welch resided in the McKenney and DeWitt, Va. area. He also lived in the Mason County, W.V. area several years prior to his mother passing in 1990. He then returned to McKenney to live, where he enjoyed going to auction and estate sales and having his own yard sales. He was a life member of American Legion Post No. 0023 of Point Pleasant, W.V. Mr. Welch was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma H. Welch; sister, Marie W. Lewis and her husband, Simpson; and brother in law, Lawrence Wright. He is survived by his sons, Gary C. Welch and wife, Sue, and Samuel J. Welch; daughters, Dolores Ray, Sarah Kunerth and husband, Duke, Marie Welch, Betty Shultz and husband, Matt, and Bert Porter and husband, George; brother, Arleigh J. Welch and wife, Faye; sister, Julia W. Wright; 10 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; godson, Kevin Keen; special sister and caretaker, Patricia Lewis; numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins, as well as sisters and brothers-in-law from his late wife's family who have always been so committed in attending the many family celebrations over the years. Willis, Mary Phoebe Enders

WILLIS, Mary Phoebe Enders, 102, died Wednesday, January 21, 2009. She was born in Catonsville, Md., April 4, 1906, the daughter of the Rev. Martin Luther Enders and Grace Hubner Enders. She completed and was certified by the Sargent School of Physical Education in Boston, Mass. In 1926, Miss Enders left Baltimore, stating her intention "to teach her way around the world." Her first stop was Fredericksburg, where she accepted a position teaching physical education at Mary Washington College. She completed and received her B.S. degree in physical education from MWC and continued to teach there until 1933. On June 20, 1931, Miss Enders married Jere M.H. Willis, then mayor of Fredericksburg. She remained a resident of Fredericksburg until her death. Raised a Lutheran, upon her marriage Mrs. Willis became and was for many years a member of the Fredericksburg Baptist Church. She later became an active member of St. George's Episcopal Church and served on its vestry. Mrs. Willis served from 1944 to 1952 as a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia. She was an active member of the Mary Washington College Alumnae Association, serving as its president and receiving its Distinguished Alumna Award. Mrs. Willis was an active member and served as treasurer of the Fredericksburg Branch of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. She was a member and served as treasurer of the board of trustees of the James Monroe Museum. She was a longtime member of the Fredericksburg Literary Club. Mrs. Willis was predeceased by her husband of 53 years. She is survived by her five sons, Judge Jere M.H. Willis Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Fredericksburg, Dr. John C. Willis and his wife, Frances, of Niceville, Fla., Dr. William W. Willis and his wife, Louise, of Saddlebrook, Ariz., Mark C. Willis and his wife, Jo Love, of Fredericksburg, and Joseph G. Willis and his wife, Suzanne Hall, of Richmond; 15 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be conducted in Confederate Cemetery at 12 noon Thursday, January 29, with the Rev. James C. Dannals officiating.
