Betty Lois Adams, 77, of Petersburg died on Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009. She was a member of West End Baptist Church and a retired school teacher. She is survived by her husband, the Rev. LeRoy Adams; children, Sheila A. Horton and husband, Lanny, of Culpeper, Va., and Michael L. Adams and wife, Terry, of Budapest, Hungary; grandchildren, Rebecca Clayson, and husband, Nick, Robert Adams and Alexander Adams; brother, the Rev. Charles W. Arrowood and wife, Betty, of Charlotte, N.C.; and sister, Susia Weaver of Gastonia, N.C. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, at West End Baptist Church. Bass, June Rebecca Foster

BASS, Mrs. June Rebecca Foster, 77, left her earthly family to be with her heavenly family on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, after a heroic three year battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lou Hilton Foster (Inez); and an older brother, Mr. L. H. Foster Jr. of Brookneal, Va. She was born July 21, 1931, at her home in Brookneal, Va. She graduated from Brookneal High School and continued her higher education at Richmond Professional Institute, now known as Virginia Commonwealth University. After earning a Certificate of Interior Design in 1952, she graduated with a Bachelor in Fine Arts in 1953. She was elected as senior class president and as May Queen in 1953. June is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Robert Bruce Bass "Bob" of Richmond, Va.; and three daughters, Becky Marshall and husband, Joel, of Burlington, N.C., Barbara Robbins and husband, Alan, of Linville, Va., and Nora Laver and husband, Roberto, of Waltham, Mass.; and one son, Robert Bruce Bass Jr. and his wife, Pamela, of Midlothian, Va. She leaves 11 precious grandchildren, Grant, Benjamin and Anna Marshall, Michael, Brian and Matthew Robbins, Brittany, Autumn and Robbie Bass, Laura and Esteban Laver. She is survived by her older sister, Mrs. Mildred Lewis Kimm of Mt. Pleasant, S.C.; and her younger brother, Mr. Watt Robert Foster of Brookneal, Va. She leaves 11 dear nieces and nephews. June's homemaking and church service were the passions of her life. She was a member of Bon Air Baptist Church since 1958, where she served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, Mission Friends Director, GA Director, Acteens Director, WMU Director and sang in the Golden Notes Senior Adult Choir. June also taught English as a Second Language (ESL) through BABC. In addition to serving her local church, she also served through the Richmond Baptist Association in many areas of leadership. The Virginia Baptist Woman's Missionary Union was the recipient of her ministry on their Camp Planning Committee, where she was also the Chairman of the Building and Decoration Committee and established the Bass Scholarship Fund. This fund has enabled over 175 campers to experience missions in a camp setting. She also served as a WMUV Executive Council member and as 2nd Vice-President. She was a member for 25 years of the Virginia Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday (today) at Bon Air Baptist Church, 2531 Buford Rd. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to be made to The Bass Scholarship Fund, Woman's Missionary Union of Va., P.O. Berkley, Upshur E.

Upshur Ellsworth "Papa" Berkley was born in Richmond, Va., on aug. 3, 1914. He was educated through the Richmond, Va., public schools system. He received his B.S. degree at Ohio State University, graduating in 1931. His work history included employment at the Lowes Theatre as motion picture lead projectionist and working for Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp. as a docking clerk until he retired in 1969. Upshur met and married the late Alice E. Farley-Berkley in Petersburg, Va., in July 1951. They were married for 39 years until Alice passed from this life on sept. 10, 1990. Upshur and Alice raised two sons, Edwillis Farley and Edgar L. Farley Sr., from her former marriage. As a family they attended the Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va. At Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Upshur met and married the late Hannah Berkley on May 2, 1994. Hannah passed from this life in the summer of 1998. His accomplishments and honors include being the president of the Local International Projectionists for the Local Association and International Theatres. He was also a certified Virginia notary public, served as a treasurer and held the esteemed honor of deacon emeritus of Mount Olivet Baptist Church, Petersburg, Va. Papa Berkley is survived by two sons: Edwillis Farley Jr., Hartland Nursing Home, Pittsburgh, and Edgar Lee Farley Sr., Temple Hills, Md.; one daughter-in-law, Barbara J. Farley, Temple Hills, Md.; seven grandchildren, Pamela E. Farley, Matoaca, Va., Arnice D. Farley-Anderson, Washington, D.C., Edgar L. Farley II, Forestville, Md., Kim Mickens, Fort Washington, Md., Minister William R. Mickens, Bowie, Md., TaJuan "Mick" Mickens, Fredericksburg, Va., Karen Jefferson, Fort Washington, Md.; three granddaughters-in-law, Pamela D. Rogers-Farley, Phyllis Mickets and Janel Mickens; 12 great-grandchildren, Sharai Farley, Seymone Anderson, Edgar L. Bertram, Hazel Elizabeth Rehnborg

BERTRAM, Hazel Elizabeth Rehnborg, 91, died February 17, 2009 at her home in the Cedarfield retirement community in Richmond. She formerly lived in Hopewell. She was born December 7, 1917 in Jamestown, N.Y., grew up in Corry, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Alvan and Gertrude Rehnborg. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon L. Bertram; and by brothers, Gordon Rehnborg and wife, Grace, and Howard Rehnborg and wife, Donna. She is survived by two daughters, Diana B. Quinlan and husband, Michael, of Hopewell and Kathleen J. Bertram of Harrisburg, Pa.; three granddaughters, Kathleen Q. Luckett and husband, Daniel, of Mankato, Minn., Beverly J. Quinlan of Powhatan and Jessica K. Broker and husband, Steven, of Mount Joy, Pa.; sisters, Doris Miller and husband, Herbert and Helen Athey of Leesburg, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Bertram was a graduate of Duffs Iron City College in Pittsburgh, Pa. Her marriage took her to Hopewell, where both she and her husband were active members of the First Union Methodist Church and the Historic Hopewell Foundation. She served as president of the Methodist Women's Organization of her church. She also served on the church board and was a Sunday School teacher. She was an active member of the Appomattox Garden Club in Hopewell. When she and her husband retired to the Hermitage at Cedarfield in 1997 they joined Trinity United Methodist Church, where both were members of the Adult Fellowship class and she was a member of the United Methodist Women. A memorial service for Mrs. Bertram will be held Saturday, February 21, at 1 p.m. in the Great Room at Cedarfield, with the Rev. Dr. John B. Peters of Trinity and Cedarfield chaplain Chancellor Hamilton officiating. Burial will be private at Sunset Memorial Park in Chester. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Samaritan Fund, 903 Forest Avenue, Richmond, Va. 23229 or to a charity of choice.

He worked for the state as a cardiographic draftsman and later became a restaurant entrepreneur. Ed was also a member of Chester Baptist Church. CLARK, William L. "Bill", of St. Stephens Church, Va., died on Tuesday, February 17, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Peggy Wilson Clark. He is also survived by two brothers, Henry I. Clark Sr. (Jane) and Winnie L. Clark (Nancy); and by his brother-in-law, John W. Wilson Jr. (Theresa). Bill was blessed with a large extended family, including Shirley Elliott, Crystal and Steve Davis and children, Atlee and Emma. Many devoted friends, including his lab, Kitti, made his life full. She was also an honorary chair for the Brunswick Relay for Life. Ethelyn was the owner and operator of Ethelyn L. Cross Bookkeeping and Tax Service. She served as treasurer of Brunswick Land, was on the board of Brunswick County Tourism, and was a lifelong member of Liberty Church. Virginia Mary was preceded in death by her parents; nine brothers. Harvey Epps Sr., Louis Epps, Edward Neverson, James Neverson, Earnest Neverson, Sylvester Neverson, Lee Lawrence Neverson, Booker Neverson and Patrick Neverson; three sister, Pouchie Layman, Elizabeth Thweatt and Mary Mykies; two nephews, Harvey Epps Jr. and James Layman; and a niece, Inell Burrow. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Doris Devore Falconer; a daughter, Susan Lesley Falconer of Richmond; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth H. Falconer of Chester. He is also survived by five nephews and three nieces. A World War II veteran, Mr. Falconer retired from Markel Insurance Company after 37 years and operated his own insurance business for several years. He was a charter and active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a member of Richmond on the James Sertoma Club, and was a former District Governor of that organization. Mr. Falconer also served as a state and national officer of the Travelers Protective Association. FRAYSSE, John Watt, of Mechanicsville, Va., died Thursday, February 19, 2009, one day short of his 84th birthday. John Fraysse, a devoted father and loving husband, is survived by his wife of 62 years, Virginia Wacker Fraysse; son, John W. Fraysse Jr.; daughter, Donna Fraysse Horn; grandsons, John W. Fraysse III, Troy E. Horn, Taylor C. Fraysse; great-grandsons, Devin S. Hewitt and Chase A. French; granddaughters, Reba Renee Fraysse Nino, Carrie Virginia Fraysse Scott, Bettina Meredith Horn; great-granddaughter, Victoria Kathryn Horn. He was a WWII Veteran, and served in the U.S. Coast Guard with service in the European Theater of War, North Atlantic Fleet, and was stationed in Greenland. He was honorably discharged as a Chief Electrician Mate in 1946. Choosing his career in the electrical construction industry, he became a master electrician, and served in many supervisory and management positions on major industrial construction projects throughout the eastern United States. He served on the City of Richmond Electrical Examining Board and Board of Appeals from 1976 to 1985, and served as Chairman for five years. He was a member of Fairfield Presbyterian Church, and formally a member of Highland Springs United Methodist Church for 40 years. HARRIS, Nell Fitzpatrick, 96, from Prince Edward County (Kingsville/Hampden Sydney), died on February 16, 2009. She was born in Buckingham County on May 10, 1912. She married James E. "Tigger" Harris, and together they ran the Hampden Sydney Esso Service Station until "Tigger's" death in 1955. She is survived by her son, James E. Harris Jr. and his wife, Caryl Shepard Harris, of Chesterfield County, Va.; and her son-in-law, Robert L. Brosio of South Pasadena, Calif. Her daughter, Anne Landon Brosio, preceded her in death by only hours. Divine providence had to be in play since there was no human communication between the two over either death. Grandchildren include Hilaire and Serena Brosio, both of California, also James E. "Jeb" Harris III and spouse, Amalia, of Vermont and Julie Zebrowski and spouse, Brett, of California; great-grandchildren, Metellus Harris (named after Nell's brother, who was a well-known outdoorsman) and Brett and Austin Zebrowski. Nell's parting words before she was so overtaken by progressive dementia were, "We did all right, didn't we." The Farmville (to include the Buckingham County) community will remember Nell as a "fiery" person who always took the high road (morally and spiritually) in life. Graveside services will be held at Westview Cemetery in Farmville at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2009. Mrs. Kessler taught biology at Covington High School and Fincastle High School and coached girl's basketball at both schools. She worked side-by-side with her husband in their store, Fincastle Mart, for many years., In 1982 she joined the Clerk's office for the Circuit Court of Botetourt County. There she assisted people researching their genealogy for almost 20 years. She helped accumulate many genealogical records and resources for the Clerk's office., to HFI. She was an active member of the Botetourt County Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Chapter Historian., She was a 1951 charter member of Big Spring Garden Club where she served in many officer positions including President. She was a lifelong member of St. Mark's Episcopal Church of Fincastle where she lovingly served as Chairman of the Altar Guild, President of the Episcopal Church Women, and was active in all aspects of church life. She cherished her time with her husband and family on Craig's Creek in Craig County., She was predeceased by her husband, Harry W. KINDERVATER, Robert A. Sr. "Bob," of Richmond, died February 17, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mae Kindervater. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy; his children, Robert Andrew Kindervater Jr. and his wife, Susan and Gayle Parrish and her husband, Brian; his grandchildren, Michael and Megan Parrish and Ashley Kindervater; his twin brother, William E. Kindervater and his wife, Linda; his sister, Helen Roberts; his aunt, Irene Matthews; and nieces and nephews. Bob proudly served in the United States Army 529th Military Police Company in Heidelberg, Germany and the 529th Honor Guard and, for the last several years, enjoyed yearly reunions with his army buddies. He was a brick mason and a carpenter, retiring in 2002. Both before and after retirement, Bob was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends, and for many years operated his own taxidermy business. Bob was a true teacher, who loved to share his knowledge of his many trades and hobbies with all who came into contact with him. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was very active with The Tuckahoe Square Dance Club, where he and Nancy danced with their many close friends for a number of years. A memorial service with full military honors will be held Monday, February 23, 2009 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Avenue, at 1 p.m., with a reception immediately following the service. She was born in Richmond on December 12, 1927 to the late Ralph Carlisle and Lucille Hughes Otey. She married Roy Alfred Sheets Jr. on October 6, 1951, and spent most of her married life in the Richmond area. She joined Greenwood United Methodist Church in 1968 and had been a faithful member until her recent illness. She taught Sunday School for preschoolers for 25 years. In addition to her husband of 57 years, she is survived by two sons and one daughter, Thomas A. Sheets and his wife, Jeanie, of Mechanicsville, and their children, Jessica Erin of Charlottesville and Dylan Thomas of Mechanicsville; R. Michael Sheets of Richmond; and Leslie S. Davis and her husband, Scot, and their son, Benjamin Drew, of Quinton. Also surviving is her sister, Peggy O. Bryant of Virginia Beach. Along with spending time with her family, she enjoyed her friends at Bingo. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Road. SULLENBERGER, Lloyd Coleman, of Orange, died peacefully on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 with his family by his side. He was born in Staunton, Va., on May 18, 1940, the son of the late Richard Lee and Helena Coleman Sullenberger of Monterey, Va. Judge Sullenberger was a graduate of the University of Virginia, served in the United States Coast Guard, and received his law degree from the Marshall Wythe School of Law. He served as law clerk to Virginia Supreme Court Justice A.C. Buchanan in Tazewell, Va. He was a partner in the law firm of Shackelford and Robertson in Orange before being appointed to the 16th Judicial Circuit Court bench. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Page Hynes Sullenberger; his daughters, Dorothy Page Sullenberger of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Sarah Coleman Deigl of Orange; a son-in-law, Paul M. Deigl Jr.; and two grandchildren, Rhew Keppler Deigl and Avery Coleman Deigl. He is also survived by his sister, Phoebe Sullenberger Fielding of Sausalito, Calif. Walton Jr., Wyatt Henry

Wyatt Henry Walton Jr., 83, of Huddleston, Va., died on Thursday, February 19, 2009, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was born September 15, 1925, the son of the late Wyatt Henry Walton and Cora Woodford Walton, and he lived his entire life on the family farm in Huddleston., He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Saunders Walton; and their three children, Leigh Walton, of Nashville, Tenn., Susan Walton Wynkoop and her husband, Morgan, of Westport, Conn., and Wyatt Henry Walton III, and his wife, Janet, of Huddleston. He left six devoted grandchildren, Grace, Henry IV, and Tyler Walton, Margaret and Will Knowles, and Katherine Wynkoop., . He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1948 he married Margaret on August 28th, a date that still remains the hottest August 28th on record in Bedford. Upon his return to Virginia Tech, Henry continued his pursuit of an engineering degree graduating in 1949. At Tech he won the Intramural championship his junior year and remained a true Hokie fan throughout his entire life. He attended his 60th "Old Guard" reunion in 2006 in Blacksburg., After college, Henry and Margaret returned to Huddleston and soon took over the country store and farm operated by his parents. He raised Hereford cattle and ran Walton's store and Southside Service Center. Henry served on the Dominion Bank Board and was on the Bedford Federal Board for over 40 years. As a community leader, Henry was very involved in lobbying the Virginia Legislature for approval of the construction of Smith Mountain Lake and was instrumental in the efforts of locating the Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Bedford County., A life long Democrat, Henry entered politics in 1963 winning a seat on the Board of Supervisors where he served two terms. He was a staunch leader during the difficult times of the integration of the local public school system that occurred during the time he was serving on the board. Henry served as the Chairman of the Bedford County Democratic Committee for many years and was active in local, state, and national politics his entire life., In 1969, Henry became a realtor with Scott & Bond, Inc. where he specialized in commercial and residential real estate and was a real estate appraiser for over 30 years. He served as Chairman of the Bedford Chamber of Commerce for two years during which time the current Chamber of Commerce office was built. He was on the original Board of Directors of the Bedford County Memorial Hospital during the time of its construction and opening. WEBB, Anne Minette, passed away into the loving arms of her Lord on Wednesday, February 18, 2009. She was born on May 3, 1924 in Isle of Wight County, Rushmere, Va. She began teaching Sunday School at the age of 16, worked for Sun Life Insurance Company in Washington, D.C., the Virginia State Library, Richmond, and was an executive secretary for and retired from Reynolds Metals Company, Bellwood Printing Plant in Chesterfield County. Nette was a member of the Business and Professional Women's Club, volunteered at the Virginia Museum, and was a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Richmond, where she taught Sunday School for 30 years. The little ones loved her as well as the members of her very large extended family. Nette's pastimes included sewing, reading and being a wonderful, loving aunt to a myriad of nieces and nephews. Nette was preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Lafayette Webb and Mary E. Jones Webb. She is survived by her sisters, Martha Elizabeth Webb of Richmond, Nancy Winifred Brown of Newel, Iowa, Mary Lee Haglin of Clarks Summit, Pa., and Alice Virginia Bedinger of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and brothers, William Robert Webb of Elkridge, Md., and Paul David Webb Sr. of Madison, Ala. Walter James White, 93, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, in Hopewell, Va. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 3, 1916. He resided in Williamsburg, Va., 45 years until moving to Brighter Living Assisted Living, Hopewell, Va. Mr. White was preceded in death by his wife of over 61 years, Beryl Buckley White. WINFREE, Mrs. Vivian T., a member of First Baptist Church of South Richmond, former president of the Women's Auxiliary Usher Board, Past Matron of Hannah Chapter #26 O.R.S. - P.H.A., and past chairperson of the Social Welfare Group Delver Women's Club, entered eternal rest on February 15, 2009. Preceded in death by her husband, Murrell H. Winfree, she is survived by her daughter, Jacqueline W. Ashford; grandchildren, Kimberly Michelle Ashford and Haywood Murrell Ashford; great-grandchildren, Isaiah Edwards, Anastasia Jones and Cameron Ashford; devoted niece, Doris M. Robinson; cousin, Robert Winfree; and a host of other relatives and friends. Her remains rest at the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home, 2700 North Ave. Funeral services will be conducted at First Baptist Church of South Richmond, 1501 Decatur St., on Saturday, February 21, at 1 p.m. Interment Maury - Mt. WYCOFF, Garien H., 52, of Richmond, passed away on Friday, February 13, 2009. Gary was born in Montreal, Canada, on March 27, 1956. He was preceded in death by his father, Wesley F. Wycoff. Gary worked for many years at the Hughes Aircraft Company and most recently as a general contractor. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Ann Marie Wycoff; mother, Johanna H. Wycoff; sisters, Anna-Lise McManus and family, Jennifer Wycoff and family; brother, Wes Wycoff, the Boyer family of Canada; Bradley Wycoff of Oregon; the de Wilde, Hartog, Vrijbergen, Alwicher, van der Wal, and van Altena families of the Netherlands, and his many friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2009 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 828 Buford Rd. Interment will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, 1400 S.
