Feb 23, 2009 The funeral for David Oliver Adkins, 81, of 511 Dillons Fork Road, Fieldale, who died Feb. 21, 2009, at Blue Ridge Nursing Center in Stuart, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Norris Funeral Services with Dr. David Adkins officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the home. He was born in Stuart on June 23, 1927, to Thomas Everett and Sallie Eggleston Adkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Wendell L. Adkins, Herbert "Hub" Adkins, L.E. "Sam" Adkins and Bill A. Adkins. He was a brick mason for more than 56 years, working with his brothers, Sam Adkins of Adkins Homebuilders and Bill Adkins of Adkins Construction Co. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict and was an ordained deacon and member of Villa Heights Baptist Church. He was a member of the former Henry County Beagle Club and the Bi State Fox Hunters Club. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lee Hundley Adkins; twin sons, Billy J. Adkins of Collinsville and Bobby L. Adkins of Fieldale; four grandchildren; a sister, Ruth A. Price of Collinsville; a brother, John G. Adkins of Collinsville; and several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Fieldale Community Center, Fieldale, Va. 24089; or to Villa Heights Baptist Church, 150 Corse Ave., Martinsville, Va. 24112.

Feb 23, 2009 The funeral for Garfield Handy, 83, of Ridgeway, who died Feb. 19, 2009, was held Sunday at Bassett Funeral Service with the Rev. Sammy Caldwell and Wesley Handy officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Hermon Church of the Brethren cemetery. Military honors were presented by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard. Pallbearers were Gary Setliff, Wade Nester, Andrew Nester, Jeff Prillaman, Wesley Handy, Marshall Handy and Brooks Barnett.

Feb 23, 2009 The funeral for Grace Inez Adkins, 80, of Martinsville and formerly of the Philpott community, who died Feb. 21, 2009, at Franklin Healthcare in Rocky Mount, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Bassett with the Rev. Lew Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Henry Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church one before the service. She was born in Burlington, N.C., on Sept. 22, 1928, to Joseph Adam Stegall and Mamie Ross Stegall. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Clifford Adkins, and a brother, Nathan Matthew Stegall. She retired from Bassett Walker. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Bassett, where she was a member of the Kingdom Seekers Sunday School Class. She was also a lifetime member of the Bassett Ruritan Club and a 55-year member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Surviving are two daughters, Glenna Rueda of Rocky Mount and Gay Minton of Ridgeway; two sons, Gene Adkins of Martinsville and Mike Adkins of Bassett; two sisters, Irene Widner of Ashboro, N.C., and Shirley Philpott of Bassett; one brother, Calvin Stegall of Penhook; seven grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Bassett, c/o The Building Fund, P.O. Box 557, Bassett, Va. 24055. Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home, Bassett, is handling arrangements.

Surviving are five daughters, Hattie Hairston of Martinsville, Mary Keen, Pauline White and Isadora Dillard, all of Axton, and Pamela Leake of Eden, N.C.; four sisters, Ruby Mae Clark, Cora Wilson and Verla Scales, all of Axton, and Matilda Hampton of Hartford, Conn.; 24 grandchildren; and other relatives. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. John Baptist Church in Axton. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
