ALLEN, Deaconess Martha Louise, 97, of Oilville, Va., departed this life Tuesday, August 11, 2009. She is survived by two nephews, Welton Allen Sr. (Brenda) and Clinton Allen; niece, Barbara Robinson (John); two great-nieces; two great-nephews; five great-great-nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends. ALVIS, Barbara C., 63, of Hopewell, died Wednesday, August 12, 2009. She is survived by her husband, Wilmore W. Alvis Sr.; two daughters, Joanna Akers and husband, Paul, of Stony Creek, and Theresa Fields of Glade Springs, Va.; son, Wilmore "Buddy" Alvis Jr. of Steubenville, Ohio; four grandchildren, Bobbijo Banes, Christopher Alvis, Cheyenne Alvis and Steven Hall; two brothers, Ed Courtright and wife, Dixie, of Murfreesboro, N.C., and Chuck Courtright Jr. of Iowa; and a number of nieces and nephews. A graveside memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, August 17, 2009, at High Hills Memorial Cemetery in Jarratt. Armstrong James Dennis Armstrong, 61, died on Monday, Aug. 10, 2009 in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie. He was born in Smyth County to the late Edward and Mary Sue Cahill Armstrong. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and was retired from Reynolds Manufacturing. Survivors include four sons, Mark Lamont and wife, Angie, of Ireland, Stephen Frye of Chilhowie, Shane Tolbert of Saltville, Brandon Armstrong and wife, Jamee, of Chilhowie; one daughter, Kelly Edmiston and husband, Rick, of Abingdon; three brothers, Ed Armstrong and wife, Mona, of Abingdon, Robert Armstrong and wife, Brenda, of Austinville, and Michael Armstrong and wife, Kathy, of Chilhowie; three precious grandchildren, Tanner Armstrong, Lily Edmiston, and Delilah Armstrong; many special aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews, and friends. Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bob Nease officiating. Joyce W. Baker SUFFOLK - Joyce White Baker, 78, passed away Aug. 12, 2009. She was born in Kings Mountain, N.C. The widow of Thomas Lansing Baker, she was the daughter of the late Ruby and Morgan White and predeceased by her stepmother, Addie Belle White. Joyce retired as an office assistant from Suffolk Home Medical. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church. Joyce is survived by her daughters, Donna B. Totty, Judy B. Wilson and her husband Bobby; sons, Thomas Dennis Baker and Mark David Baker, all of Suffolk; grandchildren, Dwayne Totty (Wendy), Crystal Conner (Tim) and Ashton Wilson; great-grandchildren, Whitney Chavis and Kristen Totty; sisters and brothers, Ileen, Cathy, T.C. and Chuck all of North Carolina; four nieces; and four nephews. Donna Sharp Brewer VIRGINIA BEACH - Donna Sharp Brewer, 80, peacefully passed away Aug. 11, 2009. She was born in Hawarden, Iowa, on July 23, 1929. She lead a life filled with her love of music. As a young woman, she sang on The Kate Smith Show and was a member of the Rockefeller Chorusters in New York City. As a member of Nimmo United Methodist Church, she served as choir director for 25 years. She is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Dr. Robert G. Brewer; her 11 children, Robert G. Brewer Jr., Scott Brown, Laura Brewer-Heilig, Daniel Brown, Susan Hammes, Megan Brewer, Matthew Brown, Todd Brown, Amy Brewer Broudy, Gigi Carr, John Brewer and their families; including 21 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was the daughter of the late Ervin and Ola Neighbors Board. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Cyrus J. Carmack Jr. She was a retired nursing assistant from the United Methodist Home. CARROLL, Richard W. "Dick," died Wednesday at home in Charlottesville, Va. Born in Altoona, Pa. on September 20, 1918, Dick is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Barbara Carroll; his sister-in-law, Ruth Carroll; his children, Chuck Carroll, Marsha Carroll, Steve Carroll, Jane Hilton and Ann Hardin; his grandchildren, Nate, Chris, Mike, Tim, Jessica, Leigh, Craig, Nicole, Elizabeth and Andrew, who range from 31 to two years in age; and his great-granddaughter, Ella. His brother and close friend, Jack Carroll, also of Charlottesville, preceded him in death. During World War II, after graduating from the University of Maryland, Dick worked as a naval architect in the Norfolk Naval Shipyards, where he met his wife. After the war, he joined Virginia Electric and Power Co. for a long career in engineering, sales and management. The family lived in many parts of Virginia, finally moving to Charlottesville in 1979, where Dick worked as vice president of VEPCO's western district until 1984. After retirement, he exercised his home handyman skills and his love of University of Maryland teams of all kinds. Constantly patient, kind, courteous and diligent in the performance of his duties, our dad and granddaddy served as an example of how to live a happy and honorable life and he will be in our hearts forever. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Joyce Winder Carter; daughter, Stacy Carter Pew and her husband, Brent; sister, Lillie Bell Gay; brothers, Beale and Raymond Joseph Carter; grandchildren, Avery Elizabeth, Ashlyn Grace and Isabella Faith Pew. He was preceded in death by a sister, Geneva Lee; and a brother, Billy Lewis Carter. Mr. Carter was the proprietor of the Carter Cement Company of Richmond. He came to the Lord Jesus Christ later in life. He served the Lord faithfully through his church for over 25 years. Ted was retired from Allied Chemical as a chief operator after 33 years of service. He was a member of Bermuda Baptist Church, and loved God, his family, all children, blue birds and Nascar racing. Mr. Goodson is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy T. Gurney, Emmett Randolph

Emmett R. Gurney NORFOLK - Former Norfolk boxing champ loses last fight. Emmett Randolph Gurney, an outstanding Norfolk amateur boxer in the 1940s, lost a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease May 27, 2009, in N. Haledon, N.J. Gurney distinguished himself as a local, state and AAU champion and served in the U.S. Air Force, rising to the rank of captain. He served at two overseas posts as well as Sumter, S.C. Air Force Base. Emmett's prowess in the ring got him a scholarship and a place on the boxing team at the University of South Carolina where he led the team in knockouts and decisions. He qualified for the U.S. Olympic tryouts and fought in the semifinal for a place on the U.S. team, but he was unsuccessful. After graduation, he turned professional and had six bouts, losing only once. Then, Emmett fulfilled an ROTC obligation to enter the Air Force. Stationed in England, he met his first wife, Diana, and brought her back with him to Norfolk, after he finished his enlistment, where they raised four children. Emmett was called back into the Air Force during the Cold War, and later, returned to Sumter, S.C., and became a math teacher, teaching in Sumter and Virginia Beach. He was known as a very kind teacher who his students enjoyed. "Dad was a very sweet man," according to his daughter, Gail Fontanella. His last years were spent in a nursing center in New Jersey close to two of his children. He is survived by his four children and their offspring, Deborah (Hal) Mondrow from Goodyear, Ariz., Gail (Tony) Fontanella and Mark Gurney, from Paramus, N.J., and Randolph Gurney from Pennsylvania. He is also survived by a brother, David (Shirley) from Winter Park, Fla., and a sister, Marilyn Romano from Jacksonville, Fla., and many nieces and nephews. Emmett was predeceased by two older siblings: a sister, Gloria Cartwright and a brother, Thomas Gurney. Emmett Gurney was born in Norfolk July 26, 1929. He was born July 15, 1921, in Axton to James Robert Bray and Virgie Wilson Bray. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Eva Bell Barbour Bray, who died Oct. 13, 2007; and three sisters, Winnie Ashworth, Mabel Simmons and Geraldine Riddle. He retired from Pannill Knitting in 1984 as a stock coordinator. He was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are a son, James Robert Bray of Axton; two daughters, Dottie B. Blair of Whitmell and Brenda B. Adams of Bassett; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wrenn-Yeatts, Westover Chapel, Danville, with Pastor Ronald Peal officiating. Burial will be in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home for one hour before the service Saturday. HOLLADAY, Mary Sue Davis, died on Thursday, August 13, 2009. She was born on September 18, 1901 in Southampton County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge Carlton E. Holladay of Wakefield, Va; her brother, Benjamin W. Davis of Richmond; her sister, Lucy Davis Short Parker of Richmond. She was the daughter of the late Edgar William Davis and Lucie Blanche (Sebrell) Davis of Sebrell, Va. Her paternal grandparents were the late Madison J. Davis M.D. and Elizabeth V. (Williams) Davis of Southampton County. Her maternal grandparents were the late Benjamin W. Sebrell of Sebrell, Va. and Martha Susan (Dunn) Sebrell of North Carolina. Mrs. Holladay was an alumna of Randolph-Macon Woman's College. She was a school teacher in Southside, Virginia and Eastern Shore, Virginia prior to marriage. She married Carlton E. Holladay on June 27, 1931. Judge Holladay died on November 26, 1990. Following the death of Judge Holladay, she moved to Williamsburg Landing in Williamsburg, Virginia. Mrs. Holladay was a former resident of Wakefield, Virginia, where she was a member of the Wakefield United Methodist Church. In recent years, she lived at Williamsburg Landing in Williamsburg, Virginia. She is survived by her niece, Jane Davis Ware of Richmond; and her nephew, Richard T. Short of Virginia Beach. In addition, she is survived by five great-nephews, Edward M. Davis, Christopher M. Davis, Alexander H. Ware III, James F. Short, Marc T. Short; and three great-nieces, Jane Ware Hawks, Martha C. Curry, Katherine L. S. Franta. A service will be held on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at 2 p.m. at Wakefield Methodist Church. One of the founding members, she also served as vice president and secretary of the Prayer Partners Radio Ministry. His warmth and humor were recognized by fellow faculty, students, and administrators alike, and he was among the most admired and respected individuals in the School of Business., Before coming to Liberty he taught for other colleges and universities including Averett University, the College of Health Sciences, Mary Baldwin University, Upper Iowa University, and Virginia Community College System., In 1998, while teaching at Averett University, Dr. Lilley was honored as the recipient of the Paul E. Hoffner Outstanding Service Award for his consistent example of excellence in teaching and personal skills, effective organizational management techniques, and high technical competence., organization., He held several professional licenses and certifications, including the Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Professional Designation from the American Institute of Property Casualty Underwriters, as well as the Associate in Claims designation and the Certificate in General Insurance, both from the Insurance Institute of America., A member of Parkway House of Prayer in Roanoke, Dr. Lilley and his family have been active participants in the life of the church and community. Mary L. Pope CHESAPEAKE - Mary L. Pope passed away Aug. 12, 2009, surrounded by loving family and friends. Mary resided in Chesapeake for four years, the last nine months at the Sentara Nursing Center. Prior to moving to Virginia, she was a longterm resident in Newton, N.J., for more than 60 years. In pursuit of a high school education, she left her hometown of Marion, S.C. In 1948, she realized her dream graduating from Newton High School. In 1949, she married the late Arthur L. Pope Sr. They were married for 30 years prior to his death in 1980. To this union four children were born. In 1972, she graduated from Joe Paterno College of Beauty Culture and obtained a license in cosmetology. For the next 25 years she worked at various salons in Sussex and Morris counties including Beauty Marc in Sparta, N.J., and Paco Hair Design in Denville, N.J. Mary's hobbies included gardening and fishing. She was a founding member of the Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Newton, N.J. She is survived by her children, Carolyn Lincoln of Virginia Beach, Arthur L. Pope Jr. of Corpus Christi, Texas, Carl Pope of Montclair, N.J., and Sandra Baynes of Chesapeake; two siblings, Lois Rowell and Mingo Rowell of Marion, S.C.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was the wife of the late Alfred William Steuart for 33 years. Born June 5, 1914, in Gladys, she was the daughter of the late James William Glass and the late Janie Frazier Glass. She was a member of Northminster Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Steuart had retired from Central Virginia Training Center, where she was employed for 14 years and prior to that was employed at Craddock Terry Shoe Corp. for 25 years. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Aubrey B. Glass and William Curtis Glass. She is survived by one daughter, Joyce S. Riner, and her husband, Robert, of Madison Heights; two granddaughters, Cheree R. Taylor and her husband, Scott, of Monroe and Joy Riner of Madison Heights; two great-granddaughters, Sophie Taylor and Stormy Taylor; a special friend, Marshall Dalton; a special nephew, Leeward Glass, and his wife, Barbara; her nephew, Preston Glass; and her sister-in-law, Ayola Steuart. She was the widow of Wyatt Taliferro Storey. Born in Lynchburg, she was the daughter of the late Ashby Russell Hodges and the late Janie Harrison Hodges. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Oren Clay Stinnett, one grandson, Oren Clay Stinnett II, and two brothers, Ashby R. Hodges Jr. and Robert W. Hodges. Frances was a faithful member of Flat Creek Baptist Church and a retired employee of Central Virginia Training Center. She was a volunteer with the Lynchburg Chapter of the American Red Cross for 25 years, and she was a platelet donor. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by two sons, Robert Ashby Storey and his wife, Deanna, of Rustburg and Larry Wyatt Storey of Lynchburg; one sister, Betty H. Farmer, and her husband, William, of Evington; three grandchildren, Amanda S. VERNON, Sidney Howard, 92, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, August 13, 2009. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hilda Haden Vernon; daughter, Shirley Kellemen and her husband, Robert; son, Charles Vernon, and his wife, Christina; grandchildren, Joshua, Marie, Todd and Kyle; and sister, Emily Frazier. Mr. Vernon served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He spent over 45 years as a building renovation contractor in the Richmond area. He attended both Oak Grove and Berean Baptist Churches. The family will receive friends 5 to 8 p.m. on Sunday at Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Rd. (Rte. 10). His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery.
