ANDRES, Thelma Glenn, passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2009 while residing with her youngest son in Atlanta, Georgia. She was formerly a longtime resident of Chesterfield, Virginia. She retired from Bellwood after more than 25 years of service. She was born on June 12, 1925 in Pamplin City, Virginia to the late Alda A. Brown and Ernest C. Davis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward "Andy" L. Andres; sisters, Annie Bullock, Marie Hendrix and Hazel Barnes, all of Richmond, Ernestine C. Mann of Danville, Virginia, and Katherine Childress of Portsmouth, Virginia. She is survived by her sons, Donald Glenn Clement, wife, Margaret, Frank Clement, wife, Sherilynn, of Richmond, and David Lee Andres of Atlanta, Georgia; twin sisters, Ruth M. Hancock of Leavenworth, Kansas, and Rose Davis McAbee of Farmville, Virginia; three brothers, Ernest C. Davis and Douglas E. Davis, both of Cumberland, Virginia, and Velden E. Davis of Chesterfield, Virginia; six grandchildren, four great- grandchildren, and a large host of nieces and nephews. She was a faithful member of Centenary United Methodist Church of Cumberland, Virginia. Memorial services will be conducted at Dale Memorial Park in Chesterfield on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Building Fund at Centenary United Methodist Church in Cumberland, Virginia. Briggs, F. Norman

BRIGGS, F. Norman, passed away August 7, 2009 in Stockton, Calif., following a long battle with cancer. He was 85. Born in Davis, Calif., he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, receiving an A.B., M.S., and Ph.D., completing his studies in 1952. Dr. Briggs held academic positions at Harvard, Tufts, University of Pittsburgh, and VCU. At VCU, he chaired the Department of Physiology from 1971 to 1985. Following his resignation of the chairmanship, he elected to continue his work and stay on as a Distinguished Professor. While living in Richmond, he and his wife enjoyed sailing the Chesapeake and playing tennis at the Westwood Racquet Club. Following his retirement from VCU in 2000, Dr. Briggs and his wife spent time living in Kilmarnock, Va., where they enjoyed sailing and learning to golf. Dr. Briggs is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ozell Briggs of Stockton, Calif.; his brother, his daughter, two grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters. A memorial service was held Friday, August 14, in Stockton, Calif. Memorial contributions can be made in his honor to Keep Tahoe Blue.

Benjamin Lloyd; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends including a special friend, David Penn; and her son-in-law, Lamar Brookshire. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Renita Brown Brookshire and a sister, Jeanette Jones. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Olive Branch Baptist Church by the Rev. Ernest Reid. Brown Jr., Samuel

Samuel Brown Jr. NORFOLK - On Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, Samuel Brown Jr., 86, of the 2700 block of Corprew Ave., left this life to enter into eternity. He was born Saturday, Nov. 6, 1922, in North Carolina, to the late Samuel and Mamie Brown. He was predeceased by his wife, Pearlean O. Fuller Brown; one grandson, Claude J. Skinner; one great- grandson, Kendall Johnson; and a brother, William L. Brown. Samuel was educated in Tarboro, N.C., public schools. He joined the U.S. Army and was a World War II veteran. Upon leaving the armed forces, Samuel moved to Norfolk, where he became a cook for several local Jewish restaurants and hotels. Later, he became an assistant maintenance supervisor for Royal Mace Apartments. Samuel also worked for Murray's Foods as an assistant manager. Samuel accepted Jesus Christ as his Saviour and became a member of St. Thomas AME Church. He loved to cook, play dominoes, and just being around family and friends. Samuel was a loving and caring person. He loved his entire family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Samuel leaves to cherish his memory a daughter, Frances C. Skinner (Charles Powell) of Norfolk; two sons, Claude J. Brooms Jr. (Angela) of Georgia and Larry Brooms of Norfolk; five grandchildren, Lavern O. Skinner of Norfolk, Treza Johnson (Eddie) of Georgia, Carletta Perry (Troy) of Franklin, Va., Waverly L. Skinner of Norfolk, and Marcus Brooms of Georgia; four great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Flossie Branchcomb (Charles) and Anne Walker, both of Chesapeake; one brother-in-law, Earl Fuller of Norfolk; three special cousins, Jetta Knight, Rudolph Knight and Leroy Howard, all of Tarboro; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at noon Tuesday in St. Thomas AME Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. Joseph Lamb. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Norfolk. The remains will be ready for viewing Monday, Aug. 17, from 3 to 8 p.m. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. The family will assemble at 11 a.m. at 1225 Tidewater Drive, Apt. 141, for the procession. Shorr of Clarksburg, W.Va.; 10 grandchildren, Dale and wife Stephanie, Chris and wife Erin, Rob, Lindsay, Jon, Kelly, Adam, Kevin, Logan and Bailey. She was a longtime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the K-CETTES and the Benedictine Woman's Bowling League. Callis, Alvin

Alvin J. Callis PORTSMOUTH - Alvin Joseph Callis, 82, passed away Saturday, Aug. 15, 2009, after a long illness. He was born in Harrellsville, N.C., Sept. 24, 1926, to the late Cora Meadows and Samuel Alexander Callis. He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret Willoughby Bazemore; a brother, Maynard Callis; and three sisters, Lorraine Hayes, Frances Eure and Alice Orland Clark. Mr. Callis was born in Person County, North Carolina. He was a former member of Harrellsville Baptist Church in North Carolina and Alexander Baptist Church in Portsmouth. Mr. Callis graduated from Harrellsville High School in Hertford County, North Carolina, in 1944. He farmed for a year before serving in the United States Army during World War II. He was inducted at Fort Bragg, N.C., Dec. 29, 1944, and received basic training at Fort Knox, Ky. He passed through Fort Meade, Md., and Camp Stoneman, Calif., in June 1945. Mr. Callis was sergeant first class in the ground forces. Overseas duty was in the Philippine Islands from June 30, 1945 to Oct. 8, 1946, and Mr. Callis served on the islands of Leyte, Mindanao and Luzon. He was discharged Dec. 7, 1946. Mr. Callis' second tour of duty was in the Korean War from Nov. 3, 1950, to Oct. 10, 1951. Mr. Callis graduated from Norfolk Naval Shipyard Apprentice School Oct. 14, 1953, and worked as an insulator. He retired as a general foreman after 37 years. Mr. Callis was a member of the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Asbestos Workers Local Number 9. He was on the executive committee of the 5th Naval District Metal Trades Council. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1984. Mr. Callis was an avid lover of the outdoors and hunting. He was an outstanding angler and won numerous trophies and awards as a member of the Norfolk County Anglers Club, which he was a member until the club retired in July 1992. He was an excellent golfer and made two holes-in-one during his golfing years. He also enjoyed gardening. Mr. Callis became a member of the American Legion, Post 310, in 1954 and was a lifelong member. He was sergeant at arms in 1955, and first vice commander in 1956. Mr. Callis leaves to mourn his daughters, Margaret Anne Laskin-Born and husband Edward of Colerain, N.C., and Jo Lynn Brown and husband Nick of Chesapeake; three grandsons, Nick Brown of Chesapeake, Randy Brown and wife Christy of Portsmouth, and Justin Laskin of London, England; three great-grandchildren, Rachael, Joey and Aiden Brown; and three brothers, Samuel, Elton and Cecil Callis. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Pauline White Carey SALISBURY, Md. - Pauline White Carey, 92, widow of retired broadcaster Samuel Sidney Carey, passed away Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, at Wicomico Nursing Home following a stroke. Born in Salisbury June 25, 1917, Polly was the daughter of Martin Bowles White and Stella Dykes White. A graduate of Washington High School, Princess Anne, she graduated first in her RN class at the Peninsula General Hospital School of Nursing in 1937. After earning her registered nursing degree, she taught nursing arts at Peninsula General. The Careys moved to Richmond, Va., during World War II, where Polly taught at Grace Hospital and worked briefly as a public health nurse. After raising their family, the Careys returned in 1969 to Salisbury, where she worked for the Wicomico County Health Department, first as a visiting nurse in Allen District and later as a mental health nurse. She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Roger Neill Carey (Nancy Temperly) of Salisbury, Sidney Lee Carey (Donna Tapper) of Olive Branch, Miss., and Jane Carey Gardner (Gary Hale Gardner) of Norfolk. She is also survived by a granddaughter, Lisa Childers Dickerson of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister-in-law, Sara Carey Eaton of Seaford; and nieces, Catherine McAlister of Ocean Pines, Mary Lee Winters of Salisbury and Roy Carey and Allison Higgins, both of New Jersey. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and past corresponding secretary of the Samuel Chase Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Polly was preceded in death by her husband in 1994, and her younger brother, Calvin Martin White, in 2004. Polly's family was vitally important to her. She and Sam traveled the world together. After his death, she spent many enjoyable hours with neighbors, old friends and colleagues. Also surviving are the children's spouses, nine grandchildren and numerous friends whom he thought of like family. Phil had a love of the outdoors and was an active hunter and fisherman. At home he had his longtime hunting companion, Bird, and three beagles. A favorite of his and his visitors was the large variety of birds which regularly visited his feeder. He was loved by so many and will be missed by all. A Celebration of his Life will be held Saturday, August 22, at 5 p.m. at his home in Powhatan. His ashes will be scattered at a later date on his beloved farm in Cumberland.

She was a native of Norfolk and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie and Mildred Richardson. Gerrilyn was a graduate of Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk. She began her career at the Ford Motor Plant in September 1976 and retired as a supervisor from Ford in August 1992. She is survived by three sons, Nickie N. Green, Lafayette Cordair Green (D'Lynn J. Green) and Gary Newsome; two sisters, Bernadette Dixon and Jackie Robinson; and a brother, Lafayette Richardson. She was recently predeceased by her brother, Kenneth Richardson. HOLZBACH, David Thomas "Hawg," 76, of Snohomish, Wash., formerly of Richmond, Va., passed away on July 23, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice J.; mother, Margaret H. Bowles; father, Thomas A. Holzbach and his cat, Punky. David was born and spent his youth in Richmond, Va. At age 20, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and completed his training at Parris Island, S.C. as a Corporal. He served his country stationed in Hawaii, and later in Korea. David worked many years in electrical work all over the east coast and parts of the midwest, finally settling down in Snohomish, Wash., where he eventually retired from the Snohomish County PUD in 1997. He was active with the IBEW Local 77, and Local 245 out of Toledo, Ohio. David was very dedicated to his work and his family. David leaves behind his two loving daughters and their families, Kristina Holzbach-Burch, her husband, Hank, and their children, Natasha, Nadia, and little Hanky, and Kirsten Holzbach-Schuman, her husband, Curt, and their children, Beau and Cole. Frank Klein, 95, of Salem, Va., passed away on Thursday, August 13, 2009, after a valiant struggle with cancer. Frank served as Captain in the United States Marine Air Corps during World War II. His numerous assignments included Midway, Okinawa, Guam and China. He also served at Guadalcanal as Commanding Officer of his squadron, assisting in repelling an almost overwhelming enemy force into a resounding victory, thus securing the island of Guadalcanal. Born into poverty to immigrant parents, Frank overcame huge obstacles and succeeded in his careers with the Federal Department of Agriculture and The New York City Transit Authority. He was an active member of the Floral Park United Methodist Church in New York, and later the Bonsack United Methodist Church of Roanoke, until illness limited his ability. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers; a sister; and his oldest son, Frank Kendrick Klein. He leaves behind his wife of 64 years, Inez Finch Klein; daughter, the Rev. Candice L. Klein; son, Kevin C. Klein; daughter-in-law, Kathleen B. Klein; granddaughter, Megan A. Klein; and numerous nephews, nieces, grand-nephews and grand-nieces. He was surrounded by friends and neighbors during this difficult time, and especially by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lancaster and Mrs. Audrey Arthur. The family is very grateful for the staff and care they received from Blue Ridge Cancer Care, Amedisys Hospice Services and Nurse One. Their professionalism and dedication is second to none. McCREIGHT, Ethelynd Elizabeth Bamford, 87, of Richmond, passed away August 14, 2009 after a long battle with dementia. She was the widow of M. Hugh McCreight. She is survived by her devoted son, Hugh B. McCreight Sr. "Bamie" and his wife, Anne Chaddock McCreight; grandchildren, Hugh B. McCreight Jr. (Siewhiang), Lori E. Kreckman (Brian), R. Lawrence Hayes (Britt), Krista B. Crandell (Shane); one sister, Nelda B. Clark; one cousin, Kay M. Heppinstill; seven great-grandchildren. Mrs. McCreight was a longtime member of Christ United Methodist Church and a member of Areme Chapter #17 OES. A special thank you to all the wonderful staff at the Lynmoore. You are the best. Mary Alice M. McNew CHESAPEAKE - Mary Alice McCready McNew, 83, died Monday, Aug. 10, 2009, at her home in Chesapeake. The only child of Mavis Hatfield and Sanders Oury McCready, Mary A. was born in Bluefield, W.Va., April 9, 1926. Afflicted with childhood polio, Mary A. refused to let it hinder her, and took dance classes to strengthen her legs. Mary A.'s family relocated during the Depression to Glade Spring, in Washington County, Virginia, and Glade Spring became the place she always afterward considered home. There, she met the man who would become her husband, Charles Grant McNew Jr. of Bristol, Tenn. Charles served as a staff sergeant in England and France during World War II, and sent Mary A. a steady stream of love letters and gifts from Europe. Upon his return from the war, Charles married Mary A. and moved to Portsmouth, where they remained happily together until Charles's death in 1994. Mary A. is survived by a son, Charles Sanders McNew; his wife, Melanie King McNew; a granddaughter, Maeve Lawson McNew; a soon-to-be-born grandson, Charles Grant McNew III; and dearest friend and companion, Sallie Elliott. Mary A. was a strong woman who lived life and left life on her own terms. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Aug. 18, beginning at noon at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel. Carl Max Monroe VIRGINIA BEACH - Carl Max Monroe, 90, died at his home Tuesday, July 28, 2009. Mr. Monroe was born in Leavenworth, Kan., the son of the late Lee DeWitt and Helen Anna Monroe. He served in World War II and retired from the Army Reserves as a colonel. He retired from his civilian career with the Shell Chemical Company, Agricultural Chemicals Research and Development, after 34 years. He earned his B.S. degree at Colorado State University and his Ph.D. from the University of California - Berkeley in botany. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dora Mae of the home; his daughter, Kristin and son Kirk; sister, Nancy Mayle; niece, Diana Mayle; and nephew, Glen Mayle. Murray Leon Nixon Sr. EDENTON - Murray Leon Nixon Sr., 74, of the 3000 block of Rocky Hock Road, died Friday, Aug. 14, 2009, in his home. Mr. Nixon was the son of the late Mary Nixon and Joel Cecil Nixon. Mr. Nixon always donated, no matter the situation; he always seemed to put others before himself. He was a member of the North Carolina Fisheries Association, the Albemarle Sound Action Program, and Albemarle Pamlico Estuarine Study. In October 1987, Gov. Martin appointed him to the North Carolina Marine Fisheries Commission Board, and in 1989 he was reappointed for four more years. He was a lifetime member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church, a member of the Carey Evans Sunday school class, and a member of the Chowan County Sheriff Association. Murray was a member of Oak Grove Hunting Club for many years and hunting master until 1990 and was honored as the 2006 Sportsman of the Year. He was also a member of Center Hill Hunting Club since 1988 and Cisco Hunting Club since 1987. He served our country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War and was a member of American Legion Post 40. Murray was a member of the United States Chamber of Commerce and the Chowan County Chamber of Commerce. The chamber named him as Business Man of the Year in 2007. He was a member of the NRA and was a North Carolina Lifetime Sportsman. Mr. Nixon served in the Rocky Hock Ruritans from 1987 to 1995. During this time, he was on the Board of Directors for three years and was named Ruritan of the Year in 1990. He was a North Carolina Farm Bureau Member and served on the Executors Board of Directors for the Center Hill Fire Dept. He enjoyed retirement so much, so in 1995 he established another milestone here in Rocky Hock, Nixon Family Restaurant Inc. His motto here is "Where you are treated like family." He opened the doors every morning, Tuesday through Saturday between 4 to 4:30 a.m., to feed his early risers, thus giving 35 more jobs to our community. Mr. Nixon is survived by his wife, Ruby B. Nixon of the home; his six children, Murray Leon Nixon Jr. and his wife Charlotte, Jimmy Nixon and his wife Pattie, Louis Nixon and his wife Dianne, Ricky Nixon and his wife Denise, Lynda Harrell and her husband Ronnie, all of Edenton, and Lisa Nixon Quinn and her husband John "Jack" of Elizabeth City; four brothers, Thomas Nixon Sr. and his wife Jeanette, W. Earl Nixon and his wife Aby, J.C. Nixon Jr. and his wife Lois, and Leroy Nixon, all of Edenton; three sisters, Ada Butler and her husband Colon of Edenton, Mary Lou Redden of Chesapeake and Frances Layden and her husband Larry of Edenton; 20 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mr. Nixon was preceded in death by his first wife, Marian White Nixon; his brother, Louis Jesse Nixon; and his great-granddaughter, Haley Nixon. Shell, Louis C.

SHELL, Louis C., of Petersburg, died Friday, August 14, 2009. He was born December 8, 1925 the son of the late Roger L. and Susie Hill Shell of Dinwiddie County, and the grandson of the late Judge Richard Cabell Shell of Dinwiddie. Mr. Shell was a graduate of Dinwiddie High School and a graduate of the University of Virginia where he received his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Law degrees. He began his practice of law in Petersburg in 1947. For nearly fifty years he was a member of the law firm of White, Hamilton, Wyche and Shell, P.C., formerly White, Hamilton, Wyche, Shell and Pollard. At the time of his death, he was retired from the law firm of Shell, Johnson, Andrews and Baskervill, P.C. Mr. Shell was a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, having been inducted in 1974. He was also a Fellow in the Virginia Law Foundation, served on the Council of the Virginia State Bar, was past president of the Petersburg Bar Association and for many years was a member of the American Bar Association. He also served on numerous boards of religious and charitable organizations. In 1956, the Junior Chamber of Commerce named him Petersburg's Outstanding Young Man for his civic and charitable activities. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Petersburg for sixty years. Mr. Shell was active in governmental and political affairs. He served on the City Council of the City of Petersburg and as Vice-Mayor. He managed the local area campaigns for several candidates for statewide office. He was also Chairman of the Bi-Racial Committee for the City of Petersburg during the 1960s. He was a charter member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church. He was active in the building of the church and was the first Chairman of its Board of Stewards, continuing to serve as Chairman of the Trustees until his death. He was also a former Trustee of the Petersburg District of the United Methodist Church. Mr. Shell is survived by his wife of 59 years, Barbara Pamplin Shell; his daughters, Pamela S. Baskervill and her husband, Charles T. Baskervill, and Patricia S. Caulkins and her husband, David W. Caulkins; his grandchildren, Ann Cabell Baskervill, Susannah B. Pittman and her husband, Lonnie Pittman, Sarah Caulkins-Zuk and her husband, Michael Zuk, and Whitney C. Caulkins; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. The family will receive friends Monday, August 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 18, 2 p.m. at St. Mark's United Methodist Church with Rev. Gretchen S. Nelson, Pastor, and Rev. Lonnie Pittman, Associate Pastor of First Dothan United Methodist Church, Dothan, Alabama, officiating. Shortt, Marie Dawson

SHORTT, Marie Dawson, 91, of Prince George County, Va., died on Saturday, August 15, 2009 at Greenfield Assisted Living. She was the widow of Lloyd C. Shortt. They were married 58 years before his passing in January 1993. Mrs. Shortt was born in Chase City, Virginia July 29, 1918, moving to the Tri-city area at the age of four on the death of her mother, Lucy Goode Cox Dawson. She was also preceded in death by her father, Benjamin "Pop" Dawson; two brothers, Charles R. Dawson and Robert E. Dawson; and one sister, Elsie Dawson Hamlin. She was employed at Brown & Williamson Tobacco Company 14 years before leaving to co-own and run for 30 years, Shortt's Radio and TV, one of Petersburg's first TV sales and service company. Later she and her husband ran Shortt's Grocery 10 years before retiring. Mrs. Shortt faithfully attended and was Deacon Emeritus of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), Petersburg. She was a member of Clowns of America, International and Virginia Alley #3, Richmond, Virginia. As "SASSY" the Clown, she visited nursing homes, adult daycares, children's homes, painted children's faces at local department stores, and marched in the Ukrop's Christmas Parade until 85 years of age. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Jordan Cogle and husband, Rudolph (Rudy) of Prince George; four grandchildren, Fred A. (Jay) Jordan and wife, Lelia Jordan, JoAnn Jordan Britt and husband, Tim, Judy Jordan Smith and husband, Lee and Jill Jordan, all of Prince George; great-grandchildren, Jason Jordan and wife, Vera of Prince George, John Jordan of Prince George, Michelle Britt of Prince George, SFC Jordan Smith and wife, Megan of Savannah, Georgia, LTJG Julee Smith, USN, Bethesda, Maryland, David Smith of Virginia Beach, A1C Sheila Smith, Elmendorf AFB, Alaska, Justin Smith of Prince George, Lee Smith Jr. of Prince George and Alexis Cogle of South Hill; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Helen Dawson of Prince George, Mrs. Dorothy Shortt and Mrs. Beatrice Shortt, both of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; longtime friends, Mrs. Louise "Bootsie" Gibson of Colonial Heights and Mrs. Alice Ovsen Kibble of Portsmouth. SMITH, Walter P. Jr., 90, of Sandston, passed away Sunday, August 9, 2009. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iva Twiford Smith; brother, Stuart Smith; and sister, Kathryn Adams. He is survived by four children, William S. Smith (Diane), Elizabeth "Betty" S. Schutte, Nancy S. Lickey, Walter P. Smith III (Dot); eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Walter attended school in Richmond, Cass Tech in Detroit, Advanced Aviation Engineering in Chicago and Burbank and VCU in Richmond. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Aviation branch during WWII, 1941 to 1945. Walter was an Architectural Service Rep for U.S. Plywood Corp., opened his own business, Architectural Wall Systems Inc., and then operated as a General Contractor. He was a longtime member of Corinth UMC and a Master Mason of Sandston Masonic Lodge for 57 years. He was active as a volunteer in many civic organizations, including the Boy Scouts, Ruritan Club, the Lay Witness Mission Program, and he had a passion for the arts: writing poetry and stories and designing sculptures and driftwood flower arrangements. Walter was also an avid salt water fisherman and loved the water and boating. The family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., with a Masonic service at 2 p.m., on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, Va. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, August 17, 2009 at Corinth United Methodist Church, 23 West Williamsburg Road, Sandston, Va. A private interment will be held at Washington Memorial Park prior to the service at the church. He was Past Master of the Truxton, Doric and Ionic Lodge No. 91. He was a World War II veteran and received the EAMET Theater Campaign Medal with one Bronze Service Star, Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Medal, Philippine Liberation Theater Campaign Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal AR 600-68, and the Victory Medal. He also received a Special Superior Accomplishment Award and Fleet Service Award from Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was employee of the month three times at Metro Machine Corp. He received a Dedicated Service and 50-year Award from the Masonic Lodge and Dedicated Service Award from Emanuel AME Church. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Irene R. Wiggins. Survivors include his daughters, Abbie L. Medious of Ossining, N.Y., and Rosalyn I. Wiggins of Hopewell, Va.; four sons, Clinton B. Wiggins (Linda) of Lanham, Md., Rufus M. Wiggins (Hazel) of Columbia, S.C., Clyde D. Wiggins (Denise) of Chesapeake, and Henry A.
