Jeanne Camille Moomaw Adams, 79, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2009, in Sandpoint, Idaho. Free at last from the pain and suffering of pancreatic cancer. She will be laid to rest in the Fairview Cemetery in Roanoke, Va., alongside her ancestors and youngest brother, Daniel Christian Moomaw. A genteel southern lady, she was born on January 10, 1930, in Roanoke, Va., the eldest child of the late Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Crumpacker Moomaw. Her brother residing in Port MacQuarie, Australia, Dr. Benjamin Clovis Moomaw, grieves the loss of his beloved sister. Also surviving are her dutiful children, Pamela Jeanne Adams and Nancy Adams Felando, of Sandpoint, and James Moomaw Adams, of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren; and one greatgrandson. BEAZLEY, A. Russell Jr., 90, of Richmond, died Wednesday, August 26, 2009. He was born in Richmond, Va., the son of Andrew Russell Beazley and Louise Gibson Beazley. From the age of 12, he was reared in the Masonic Home of Virginia. He was a WWII veteran, a graduate of The University of Virginia School of Law, and a past master of the Babcock Lodge #322 AF & AM. He was a member of the Scottish Rite and Acca Temple, where he played in the "Million Dollar Band." He was a member of American Legion Post 84 and the Breakfast Club. He practiced law in Richmond for 55 years, serving as a Circuit Court Judge in Richmond and Goochland County. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Andreena Frey Beazley; sister, Anne Nauman; and brother, Gibson Beazley. Mr. Beazley is survived by his wife, Marion S. Beazley; daughter, Janet Beazley Fosque and her husband, Fletcher; daughter, Susan Beazley Hudson; son, Andrew Russell Beazley III; grandchildren, Laura, Margaret, Benjamin and Andrew; sister, Emma Yates; stepchildren, Henry W. Geisz Jr. and wife, Brenda, Deborah Geisz Shelton and husband, Bill, and their families. BORKEY, Daniel, 54, went to be with the Lord on August 24, 2009. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Anne Borkey. He is survived by his father, Herbert D. Borkey Jr.; brother, Harry B. Borkey; and other family and friends. He was born November 13, 1954. He attended Lee-Davis High School and was a Vietnam veteran in the U.S. Marine Corps. Edward G. Bradshaw PORTSMOUTH - Edward George Bradshaw, 85, a resident of Emily Green Shores Retirement Home and formerly of the 4300 block of Griffin St., died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009. Mr. Bradshaw was a native of Newsoms, Va., and retired as a supervisory technician in the Quality Assurance Department of the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth. He was also a welder in Shop 26. He was a faithful member of Asbury United Methodist Church, a member and Past Master of Churchland Masonic Lodge No. 276, AF & AM; a member of the Portsmouth Scottish Rite, Kedhive Shrine Temple of Norfolk, Mount Horeb Chapter No. 11, and the Portsmouth Shrine Club. He was predeceased by his wife, Oretha; a special friend, Mildred Birdsong; and five brothers, Cecil, Wallace, Joe, Bobby and Billy. He is survived by his sister, Shirley B. Sublett of Portsmouth and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, in Asbury United Methodist Church by the Rev. Karen Whitehurst. She was a longtime member of Vinton Church of the Brethren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Brown; infant son, George Stevens Brown; and sons-in-law, Wayne (Silo) Saunders and Donnie Hartsel. BROWN, Charles Herbert Jr., 72, of West Point, Va., died Tuesday, August 25, 2009. A native of Gloucester, Herb graduated from Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in Dayton, Va. and received his Master's Degree in Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. He retired in 1993 from West Point High School as associate principal, having previously served as band and choral director, teacher, and assistant principal. He was the organist at many churches throughout the area, most recently, at Christ Church, Middlesex. Herb was one of the founders of Arts Alive, Inc. in West Point, serving as its first president, and was a member of the West Point School Board for eight years. He was active in many civic activities throughout the community. He is survived by his wife, Margaret Hill Brown; a son, David Copeland Brown and his wife, Melanie; two daughters, Elizabeth Coverleigh Brown, and Cary Brown Tomlinson and her husband, Brock; a sister, Carolyn B. Sterling and her husband, Lester; six grandchildren, Jennifer, Madison, Copeland, Olivia, Charles Herbert III and Kyleigh. Canfield, Virginia Ann Stein

Virginia Ann Stein Canfield, of Roanoke, Va., and wife of Robert Eugene Canfield, passed onto her heavenly reward on Monday, August 24, 2009, at the age of 72. The mother of eight children and grandmother of 25, Virginia had been honored as the Roanoke Valley Mother of the Year for Family Life in 1988. She and Bob celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last September at Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, where they have been active parishioners for the last 45 years. During those years she volunteered in numerous church, community and youth activities in the Roanoke Valley, including Eucharistic Ministry, parish transportation ministry, OLN Friendship Circle, K of C Annual Basketball Tournament, South City Knights Youth program and Roanoke Catholic Schools. Virginia was the foster mother for many infant babies awaiting adoption through Catholic Charities. She founded the Christ is Christmas organization whose mission is to focus and evangelize the birth of Jesus Christ as the true meaning of Christmas. Throughout her life, Virginia was a lady of overwhelming caring and giving to all those around her. Virginia is preceded in death by her parents, Marie and Walter Stein; and brother, Pete Stein. She is survived by her husband, Bob; children and spouses, Bobby and Glenda Canfield, Maureen and Tim Rowe, Patricia and John Gazewood, Mary and Royce Day, Virginia and Jim Buch, Carolyn and William McDonald, Michael and Kerry Canfield, and Raymond and Rosy Canfield; and 25 grandchildren. Virginia is also survived by her siblings, sisters, Marge Souran, Marie Stupin and husband, Gene; and brother, Walter Stein. DANIEL, Herman Calvin, Jr., 84, died Tuesday, August 25, 2009, at Brandermill Woods Health Care Center. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Marie Bishop Daniel; his sons, Herman Calvin (Dan) Daniel lll (Barbara) and Stuart Evans Daniel (Beth); and his daughters, Nina Daniel Pryor (Lib Northen) and Mary Ellen Price (Buzz); and six grandchildren, Lindsey (Henry), Mitchell, Mariah, Christina, Sarah Kelly and Matthew; and many close friends. Born and raised in Dinwiddie County, Va., Herman was the son of Viola Kelly and Herman Calvin Daniel. He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Marlene Clements, Eva Davis, Hilda Beville and Christine Amabile; two brothers, William Byrd Daniel and Robert Gilliam Daniel. Herman is survived by one brother, Arthur Clay Daniel. After serving in the United States Army in the Infantry Division, Herman had the opportunity to work for 32 years in plant supervision for Dupont Corporation in Richmond, Va. He took great pride in having a strong work ethic and relished the friends he made at work. Herman particularly loved golf. He was always ready for a hand of bridge. Herman also had a passion for antique glassware and was especially fond of collecting cruets. A memorial service will be held this Saturday, August 29, 3 p.m. at Brandermill Church, 4500 Millridge Parkway, Midlothian, Va. 23112. DAVIS, Vivian "Vickie" Louise Spain, 82, of Dinwiddie County, widow of Dennis Sterling Davis, died Tuesday, August 25, 2009 in Southside Regional Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer. Born January 28, 1927 in Petersburg, she was the daughter of the late Dennis Allen Spain and Frances Elizabeth Suthard Spain. She attended Spotswood Business Academy in Petersburg and retired from Southside Regional Medical Center as Executive Secretary to the Director of Nursing after 25 years of service. She was a communicant of St. John's Episcopal Church, Petersburg, where she had served on the Altar Guild and was a direct descendent of the Pamplin Family of Dinwiddie County. She was predeceased by three brothers, Thomas Bolling Spain, Dennis Allen Spain, Cary Suthard Spain; and a sister, Evelyn Spain Williams. Vivian is survived by her children, Dennis Sterling Davis Jr. of Gulf Breeze, Fla.; Scott Farber Davis of Dinwiddie County; and Victoria Davis Zevgolis of Colonial Heights; her grandchildren, Dennis Sterling Davis III, Dennis Allen Davis; a granddaughter by choice, Shely Resnick Douglas; and son, Allen; a devoted friend and caregiver, Mattie Pully Jones of Stony Creek; and a former daughter-in-law, Bonnie Davis Resnick. Bette Cooper Drewry VIRGINIA BEACH - Bette Ann Cooper Drewry, 71, passed away Monday evening, Aug. 24, 2009, at her home. At the end she was surrounded by love with her children. She was born Sept. 30, 1937, in Fort Worth, Texas. She was the only daughter of Boyd Cooper and Mabel Cooper Guenther. Bette was a graduate of Paschal High School and the University of Arkansas where she earned her undergraduate and master's degree in Spanish. She was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha Fraternity, editor of the Preview, and was named to the Arkansas Who's Who her senior year. Bette was a member of Epworth United Methodist Church. She joined Epworth after a quarter of a century membership in Church Street United Methodist Church in Knoxville, Tenn. She read and studied John Wesley's history with love and devotion. She loved reading, gardening and working outside, and traveling. She visited Kenya twice and fell in love with Africa. She loved the land, the people, and the stories of Kenya. She was predeceased by her parents. Her mother died at age 105 and Bette had personally cared for her mother for over the last 20 years of her life. She is survived by a son, William B. Drewry and his wife Katherine Martin of Atlanta; a daughter, Bette Cathleen Grieve and her husband Eric of Portsmouth; and a youngest daughter, Leslie Ann Currey and her husband Brian of Nairobi, Kenya. She is also survived by seven grandchildren that she loved and adored: Emily Grace, William Cooper, John Ford (Jack), Alice Elizabeth, Eleanor Ann, Colin Henry, and Charlotte Cathleen. Bette spent her entire life taking care of her children, her mother and her cats. She was always there for her friends and neighbors especially in Fort Worth. She was born in Radford, VA on November 25, 1952 to the late Isaac Walter and Mary Ellen Burton Blevins. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Dulaney and his parents Dennis and Hazel Dulaney. She loved walking on the beach, serving God and most of all being with her grandchildren. She is survived by: her daughter, Melissa Dulaney of Shawsville; daughter and son-in-law, Cimberly and Eldon Meredith of Christiansburg; son and daughter-in-law, Jeremy (JD) and Dru Dulaney of Radford; eight grandchildren, Zachary Woods, Benjamin Woods, Caleb Woods, Rachel Woods, Amy Meredith, Kevin Meredith, Allie Dulaney and Wells Dulaney. She is also survived by 13 brothers and sisters and numerous other family members. He received his degree in Business Administration from VCU. Since 1982, he had been a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual and held the professional designations of CLU, ChFC, and CFP. He concentrated on "special needs planning." In his teen years, he was a leader in AZA, out of which came several lifelong relationships with dear, dear friends. He served on the board of the Autism Society of Central Virginia, the board of the Richmond Forum, and was a devoted supporter of Hillel in his college years. A graduate of Beth-El schools, he was a lifetime member of Temple Beth-El. Survivors include his loving wife of 24 years, Karin Epstein Fine; his devoted son, Kevin Fine; his adoring daughter, Allison Fine; parents, Bea and Jack Fine; sisters, Helen Fine Griffin and Abby Fine Tor; mother-in-law, Ellen Epstein; a wide circle of nieces and nephews; and a talented K9, Claire, "the wonder dog." FOY, Margaret Fry, widow of Robert Franklin Foy, left earth for glory August 26, 2009. Born January 15, 1911 to John G. Fry and Carrie Darst Fry, she was a member of Boulevard United Methodist Church since its founding in 1919. There she taught the ladies Fidelity Class for more than half her life, beginning even before her marriage to Robert Franklin Foy on October 8, 1932. An active member of the United Methodist Women, she served church and conference in stimulating spiritual life and growth, primarily through her Bible studies. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Grayson Foy, retired teacher from J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College, and many spiritual daughters and sons. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Avenue. No formal visiting hours are planned for that site. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 31, in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Aug 27, 2009 George W. Gusler Sr., 87, of 73 Hawthorne Court, Collinsville, and formerly of 4180 Kings Mountain Road, Collinsville, died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2009. He was born Sept. 1, 1921, in Henry County to Will and Lula Gusler. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Herman Gusler, Sam Gusler and Johnny Gusler. He served in the Army during World War II and was a survivor of the invasion of Normandy. He was a longtime building contractor and built many homes in the Collinsville area, and he had been a member of the First Baptist Church of Collinsville for many years. Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Sue S. Gusler of the home; three sons, G.W. Gusler Jr. of Asheboro, N.C., Bobby Gusler of Florida and Paul Gusler of Martinsville; two daughters, Frances G. Mitchem of Bassett and Glenda G. Inman of Collinsville; two stepsons, Jay White of Greenville, N.C., and Larry White of Holden Beach, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Susan W. Combee of Mechanicsville; 15 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and a sister, Mary Roberts of Collinsville. GREEVER, Lucie Guerrant Gillespie, 90, passed away on August 25, 2009 at her home in Burke's Garden, Va. Lucie was born February 20, 1919 to William M. and Mary Hamlin Guerrant Gillespie. Educated at Tazewell County schools, Hollins College, and the University Of Virginia School Of Architecture, Lucie was the first woman to graduate from the School of Architecture. Following her graduation, Lucie worked as an architect in Bluefield, W.Va. She later practiced her profession from home, drawing for family and friends. Her mark can still be seen on structures throughout Tazewell County. She married Edgar Philip Greever on July 8, 1950. Lucie was an avid supporter of the Crab Orchard Museum, serving as a board member and chairwoman. She was a Girl Scout leader; a member of the Tazewell Community Hospital Auxiliary, and a supporter of numerous charities including the Burke's Garden Fire Department and Rescue Squad. For over fifty years, Lucie enjoyed her many friends in the Tazewell Bridge Club. She attended Central Lutheran Church of Burke's Garden, Va. She was predeceased by her parents; one son, Edgar Philip Greever, Jr., and son-in-law, William T. Brooks. She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Edgar Philip Greever; her three daughters and their husbands, Nancy Patricia Greever Brooks, Lucinda Gillespie Greever Nicholson and Joe Arlington Nicholson, Eleanor Elizabeth Greever Lewis and Thad Quinton Lewis; six grandchildren, William Philip Greever Brooks and his wife, Andrea Notaro Brooks, Jefferson Gillespie Brooks, Lucie Elizabeth Lewis, Thad Quinton Lewis III, Samuel Arlington Nicholson, Anna Elizabeth Nicholson; and one great-grandchild, Olivia Taylor Brooks. He was preceded in death by a son, Edwin V. Hutt Jr. He is survived by his wife, Ann L. Hutt; his children, Merrill B. Hutt, Mike and Debbie Hutt, William and Connie Hutt, Roger and Kathleen Hutt, Robin Hutt-France and Keith Morris; his grandchildren, Maria and Adam Clarke, Jeffrey Dean Jones, Jessica, Hudson and Morgan Hutt, Michael Hutt, Drew and Annie Hutt, Heather and R.J. Hutt, Amanda and Josh Morris. He was owner-operator of A to Z Antiques in Tappahannock and former owner-operator of Northern Neck Tire and Recapping in Warsaw and Kilmarnock. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church and current senior warden. He was an active member of the Northern Neck District Boy Scouts for the past 50 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. He touched many lives through his volunteer work with Little League, Boy Scouts and church activities. Harry is survived by: his wife: Margaret Smith Isom of Floyd; daughter and son-in-law: Carla and Phillip Thorpe of Wilmington, North Carolina; son Chad Isom of Stafford, Virginia; three grandchildren: Morgan Isom, Dylan Isom and Christopher Isom. Also surviving are four sisters, Janie Duncan, Mary Ruth Webb, Susie Goad and Mary Isom all of Galax, and three brothers, James Isom and Eugene Isom both of Galax and Ronnie Isom of Woodlawn. Aug 27, 2009 John Vincent Shenal, 90, of 11350 Avocet Drive, Chesterfield, and formerly of Martinsville, died Aug. 24, 2009, at Lucy Corr Nursing Home in Chesterfield. He was born March 2, 1919, in Pennsylvania to Peter and Sophie Kubina Shenal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Shenal, in 2002; four brothers, Peter, Joseph, Stephen and Paul Shenal; and a sister, Anna Hruska. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Shenal retired from DuPont with more than 42 years of service, and he was instrumental in the founding of the Martinsville DuPont Employees Credit Union and served on its board of directors for many years. He also was an officer and council representative of the Martinsville Nylon Employees Council for more than 30 years. He was of the Catholic faith. Surviving are a son, Johnny Shenal of Chesterfield; a daughter, Frances S. Harris of Midlothian; a brother, Andrew Shenal of Adah, Pa.; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. A funeral mass will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Roselawn Chapel Funeral Home with Father Joe Torretto officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park with military honors by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard. JOHNSON, Aubrey Ross, 87, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 from complications after surgery. He was a native of Keyser, W.Va., and is survived by his beloved wife of over 60 years, Barbara; son, Jeffrey Johnson and wife, Patsy, of Fredericksburg, Va.; daughter, Jill J. Helmus of Richmond, Va.; two grandsons, Jeffrey B. Johnson and wife, Curtina, of Fredericksburg, Va. and Jason B. Johnson and fianc‚e, Jarman R. Fagalde', of Richmond, Va.; and one great-grandson, J. Benjamin Johnson of Fredericksburg, Va. He was preceded in death by his parents, Otis W. and Maggie S. Johnson of Keyser, W.Va.; sister, Esta J. Gittings of Baltimore, Md.; and son-in-law, Brian C. Helmus of Richmond, Va. Aubrey served as a dive bomber pilot in the Navy in WWII, was an avid sportsman, and ended his professional career as Vice President of Merchandising for GC Murphy where he worked for over 42 years, retiring in 1982. A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 29, 2009 at 2 p.m. at the Epiphany Lutheran Church, 1400 Horsepen Road, Richmond, Va. 23226. He will be interred in Arlington National Cemetery when he is joined in death by his beloved Barbara, where they will be interred together. He is survived by his one daughter, Deborah Walter and husband, Richard, of Kamas, Utah; two stepdaughters, Susie Benson and husband, Taylor, and Holly Antrim and husband, John Mason, both of Richmond; stepson, S. Kirk Materne and wife, Stuart, of Naples, Fla.; sister, Valerie Jones Materne of Washington, Conn.; brother, Christopher Peter Jones of Wayland, Mass.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. DeLancey was a World War II Navy veteran and retired from Ohio Bell in Cleveland. After his retirement, he and Barbara lived in Williamstown, Mass. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Gordon Thomas Sims and Patrick Allen Sims, Rebecca and Bradley Conner, Rob Randolph III, William Randolph, Isaac Randolph, Elijah Randolph, and Candace (Rick Firebaugh), Rebecca Gross, Amanda Barrett, Inara and Adama Lezan. Also, he is survived by dear cousins in France and Brazil; and by his first wife, Marian Bulcao de Moraes. He was preceded in death by his parents, Yvonne and Victor Lezan; and brothers, Jean and Yves Lezan; and a son, Vic Sims. Georges worked as an electrical engineer with General Electric from 1957 until his retirement in 1988. He was an avid amateur astronomer, lover of nature, inventor, tinkerer, and independent thinker. Dorothy Jeanne Lilly (Nannie) Moses, 87, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 26, 2009., Jeanne was born in Beckley, W.Va., on July 3, 1922, the first child of A.W. Lilly and Irene Huffman Lilly. Her marriage to Joseph B. Moses in 1947, lasted for 56 years until his death in 2003. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Frederick R. Lilly; and sister, Patricia Lilly Wilson., Jeanne is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah (Tommy) Lane, Cynthia (Roger) Hofford, and Jo Anne (Jeff) Shaver. Her grandchildren are Heather (Chris) O'Neal, Diane Lane, Laura Hofford, Brandon Shaver, Kelly Shaver, and Stephen Hardy. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren; her brother, Edwin R. Lilly, sister-in-law, Lois (Frederick) Lilly; and numerous nieces and nephews., Jeanne was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother to her family, whom she dearly loved. She was a faithful member of Preston Oaks Baptist Church for 49 years, willingly serving her Lord and the community as church clerk for 31 years, and in many other volunteer activities. Jeanne was a member of the Dorcas Sunday School Class. Her life reflected a favorite verse, 2 Timothy 2:15. Jeanne loved gospel music and was a special fan of Bill Gaither. She was an avid stamp collector and enjoyed her hobby for many years. Aug 27, 2009 A private service will be held today for Norris Franklin Smith, 89, of 1601 Church Street Ext., Martinsville, who died Aug. 25, 2009, at Blue Ridge Rehab Center. The Rev. John T. Fulcher will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park with a flag presentation by the Martinsville-Henry County Veterans Honor Guard. Smith was born Aug. 4, 1920, in Mayodan, N.C., to Robert Hunter Smith and Estelle Shropshire Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Evelyn Smith Clifton and Susie Hunter Smith Hazelwood. He served in the Navy during World War II as a storekeeper and saw action in the Atlantic and Pacific. He was in Shanghai when the war ended. Norris was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal, American Area Medal and the European-African Area Medal. He worked as a sales representative for Aldon Industries, where he was recognized as Salesman of the Year in 1966-68, and he owned Vantage House Carpets in Martinsville for more than 35 years. He was a charter member of the Elks Lodge and a member of the VFW, American Legion and Lynwood Golf and Country Club. Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Thelma Lipford Smith of the home; three sons, Nelson Frank Smith and William Temple Smith, both of Martinsville, and Robert Hunter Smith II of Richmond; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and four nieces. Memorials may be made to the Adult Day Care of Martinsville and Henry County or to a charity of the donor's choice. OWENS, John M. "Pete" Jr., of Richmond, departed this life suddenly on August 22, 2009. He was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Owens Mayfield; father, John M. Owens Sr.; one sister, Sandra O. Jones; and brother, Charles Jefferson. He leaves to cherish his memory two children, Nicole Ross and Jermon Haskins; five sisters, devoted and caregiver, Linda Reavis, Doris Sauls, Margaret, Loretta and JoAnne; four loving brothers, Cornelius Jefferson (Roxanne), Alvin Jefferson, James Jefferson (Shelda), John III; wife, Kathy; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild; devoted friends, Ellen Wilken and Keith Jordan; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was employed at Costen Floors for 25 years. His spirit will be greatly missed by all who knew him. WILLIAM "MORRIS" PHILLIPS CHRISTIANSBURG-William "Morris" Phillips entered into eternal rest on Sunday, August 23, 2009 after a long challenge with Parkinson's. A native of Floyd County, he was born December 20, 1929, and predeceased by his parents Deputy Sheriff William Lewis Phillips and Cordova Q. Phillips, an infant brother, and sister Clarah Vae Phillips. Honoring his memory are: his devoted wife of 58 years Freeda Ratliff Phillips; four sons and daughters-in-law, William Michael and Barbara Phillips, Christiansburg, Stephen and Patricia Phillips, Christiansburg, Terry and Wanda Phillips, Eggleston, Jeffrey and Jill Phillips, Blacksburg. He is the proud grandfather of Sara Beth Chapman, Bradley, William Adam, Casey, Laura, Corey and Shannon Phillips, and great-grandfather to Jared Bruce and baby Ella Leann Chapman. He is also survived by: his sister Helen Mabry, Cherryville, NC; sisters and brothers-in-law, Ruth and George Heafner, Greensboro, NC, Mamie and Earl Vest, Floyd; brother-in-law and wife, Gene and Darlene Ratliff, Roanoke; sister-in-law, Frances Ratliff, Floyd, and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. In his early career, he was an agent for Peoples Life Insurance Co. He joined Floyd Garment Company in 1961, managing the plant there before moving to Christiansburg where he assumed management of Donnkenny Sportswear until retirement. He was a member of the Lions Club in Christiansburg and Floyd Ruritan Club. An avid sportsman, Morris was a member of the Christiansburg Hunt Club, Izaak Walton Club and Gun Club acquiring honors for his marksmanship, including 1968 State Trap Shooting Champion, and induction into the Virginia Trap Shooting Hall of Fame. His love for gardening, beekeeping, sheep and cattle raising was known by all whose friendship he enjoyed. His firm ethic in life was to love and teach his children well, and assist them in developing their God-given talents. She was born May 15, 1931, in Ohio to Orville Shell and Esther Sommers Shell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by six brothers. She was a member of Forest Hills Presbyterian Church and served as an elder, and she was a member of Chatmoss Country Club. She also was a volunteer at Grace Network. Russell in 1939 and they moved to Virginia where they were proprietors of Gene Russell Florist, in Hampton. After the death of her husband, she moved to Meadows of Dan and was active in the Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church and the Willis Homemakers Club. She is survived by her son, Jack Russell and his wife, Lee Chichester of Meadows of Dan. A memorial service will be held at the Slate Mountain Presbyterian Church in Meadows of Dan on a day to be announced. SMITH, Norris Franklin, 89, of Martinsville, Va., died Tuesday, August 25, 2009. He was born in Mayodan, N.C. on August 4, 1920 to the late Robert Hunter Smith and Estelle Shropshire Smith. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and saw action in the Atlantic and Pacific. In the floor covering industry for decades, he was Regional Manager for Alden Carpets and owner of Vantage House Carpets for over 35 years. Norris was an avid golfer and participant in numerous tournaments throughout the years. Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Thelma Lipford Smith; and three sons, Nelson Frank Smith and wife, Kay, of Martinsville, William Temple Smith of Martinsville and Robert Hunter Smith II and wife, Heather, of Richmond; nine grandchildren, including Hayden and Carthen of Richmond; and four great-grandchildren. She was born Dec. 7, 1923, in Amherst County and was a daughter of the late James E. and Helen Moore Martin. She graduated from Madison Heights High School and married James W. Saunders on Sept. 26, 1941. Elenora's faithful and devoted life's work was to her family and home. She cared for her husband and raised her three children with all the tender love and dedication that she had. No matter what, her family came ahead of her own personal health and desires. She, along with her husband, made sure that their children grew up in church knowing God and Jesus and the values of family, dignity and respect for others. When her children married and had their own families, she always looked forward to them coming home, especially for Christmas, birthdays and special occasions or anytime they could. She would spend days in the kitchen preparing her special dishes and made sure there was a favorite dish for each family member. There was never a day that her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren doubted her love for them. She was proud of each and every one of them and encouraged them to use their God given talents throughout their lives. Elenora was a former member of Rose Union Baptist Church in Piney River and was currently a member of Ivy Farms Baptist Church in Newport News. She loved flowers and worked part-time for florists making beautiful arrangements. For several years, she looked forward to serving as a volunteer at the James River Convalescent Center in Newport News, helping the patients, especially as they enjoyed a game of Bingo. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by two sisters, Julia Martin and Agnes Alcock. She is survived by her loving husband and best friend of 68 years, James W. Saunders; her daughter, Judy S. McCartney, and her husband, Billy, of Amherst; her two sons, Ron Saunders and his wife, Susan, of Suffolk and Michael W. Saunders and his wife, DaNae, of Yorktown; her sister, Edith M. Foster, of Elon; her grandchildren, Tara, Richard, Robert, Kimberly, Lindsay Grace, Alaina, Megan and Stephen; and her great-grandchildren, Brittany, Anna-Marie and Aleigha. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 2009, in Rose Union Baptist Church by the Rev. John P. Campbell. Burial will follow in the Amherst Cemetery. He is survived by a loving and devoted daughter, Tia R. Vaughter, and a loving son, Tyrone C. James Columbus Waddell, 82, of Fairlawn, Va., passed away on Wednesday, August 26, 2009, at his home. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the United States Navy, and was a retired employee of RAAP. Walker, Henry Howard

Henry Howard Walker, 81, of Roanoke, Va., died on Monday, August 24, 2009. He was born on April 10, 1928, in Callaway, Va., son of the late Robert Lee and Roberta Handy Walker. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kim Walker; and three brothers, Cliff, Herman and Russell Walker. Mr. Walker was a retired United States Marine Sergeant who served in World War II, the Korean War and Viet Nam. He was a retired insurance agent for Nationwide Insurance, and a member of Cave Spring Baptist Church. He is survived by his son, Robert Walker, of Roanoke; sister, Elva Cundiff, of Callaway; two brothers, Robert Lacy Walker, of Callaway, and Bud Walker, of Rocky Mount; and numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.
