Ann Clark

CLARK, Ann Arnold, 79, of Richmond, died January 4, 2010 after an extended illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Mary Arnold; and her sister, Zaida Lanier. Surviving are her longtime companion and fiance, Virgil Mercer; brother, T.K. Arnold (Sarah); son, David Clark (Leigh); daughter, Donna Shater (Chris); grandsons, Nathan Lester (Megan) and Adam Lester; great-grandson, Hoke Lester; brother-in-law, Paul Lanier; beloved pet, Tammy; several nieces and nephews, and many longtime friends. Ann grew up in a lovely farmhouse that she adored in Louisburg, N.C., where she graduated from Edward Best High School in 1948. She was the Membership Director for the APVA for 19 years, a position of which she was most proud and where she developed many long-lasting friendships. Ann was a beloved mother, sister, grandmother and friend and she will be missed by all who knew her. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 8, 2010, at the Bon Air Presbyterian Church, 9201 West Huguenot Rd., Richmond, Va. The family will receive friends at the church following the service.

Annie PEARSON-JOHNSTON

She moved to the United States in 1963 living in Newport News, Va., until December 1996. She wed Robert Johnston and moved to Norfolk, N.Y., in June 1997., She raised her family in Newport News, Va., and had many dear friends. She loved having coffee and meeting her pals at Dunkin Donuts. She was one for great conversation, an avid reader, enjoyed world politics, having a good laugh, and watching her children and the neighborhood friend's play outside., She leaves behind her loving husband, Robert C. Johnston; her daughter, Monique Aronsohn and her husband, Paul; two sons, Dan and Bob Pearson; her brother, Peter Hessels; grandchildren, Amber, Samuel and Eddie; two daughters- in-law, Stacy Pearson and Maria Pearson. She is also survived by her beloved stepchildren/grandchildren, Robin, Marty, Eddie, Christopher, Michelle, Maddie and Rylee, Liam and Benoit., She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She will be missed dearly.


 


 

Anthony Bernard Reger

REGER, Anthony Bernard, 96, of Henrico, passed away January 4, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife, Katherine H. Reger. He will be remembered for his contentment of life, keen sense of humor and dedication to a yard full of flowers. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the US Navy and the then newly formed "Sea Bees." He was retired from Merita Bakery. He is survived by two sons, Gerald F. Reger "Jerry" of Kingsland, Texas, and Anthony H. Reger "Buddy" of Mathews, N.C; one daughter, Sharon Grubbs of Hamilton, N.C.; five grandchildren, Michael Reger, Douglas Grubbs, Raymond Grubbs, Robin Sims and Ashley Reger; and five great-grandchildren. A celebration of his life will begin with the family receiving friends 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bliley's-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road. A graveside service will be held 12 noon Thursday at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Arthur C. HILSTROM Sr.

WILLIAMSBURG - Mr. Arthur Charles Hilstrom Sr., 84, passed away at his home on Jan. 1, 2010, in Williamsburg, Va., Mr. Hilstrom was born on July 2, 1925, in Huntington Beach, Calif. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1963 after 21 years of faithful service to his country. He was a World War II and Korean War Veteran. His family traveled with him to duty stations in Kobe, Japan and La Rochelle, France. He also retired from civil service at Fort Eustis in 1987 as a Ship Surveyor. He was a member of the Chickahominy Masonic Lodge No. 286, The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8046 where he was a Past Post Commander, and the Williamsburg Moose Lodge 757. He was also a member of the Oak Tree Hunt Club and the Lafayette Gun Club. Mr. Hilstrom loved boating, fishing, and hunting., He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Lois W. Hilstrom; parents, Gunnar and Dora Hilstrom; and two sisters, Barbara Armstrong and Stella Braaten., He is survived by a sister, Ruthie Reardon of New Hampshire; a brother, Howard Hilstrom and his wife, Doris of Williamsburg; two sons, Charles Hilstrom Sr. and his wife, Sharyn of Williamsburg; Arthur Hilstrom Jr. and his wife, Jessie of Williamsburg; two daughters, Linda Criswell and her husband, Bill of Williamsburg; and Shirley Tunstall and her husband, Bobby of Toano; five grandsons, Bill Criswell Jr. of Richmond; Nathan Allen of Richmond; Bryan Allen of Richmond; Arthur Hilstrom III and his wife, Michelle of Croaker, and Charles Hilstrom Jr. and his wife, Becky of Williamsburg; four great-granddaughters, Althea and Cassidy Allen of Croaker; Heidi Lynn Hilstrom of Williamsburg; Alexis Hilstrom of Croaker; and one great-grandson, Logan Hilstrom of Croaker; and many nieces and nephews.

Billie Sanders Schwartz Mrs. Billie Sanders Schwartz, age 78, passed away Dec. 30, 2009, in Longview, Texas. She was a former resident of Saltville and a 1949 graduate of Saltville High School. She is survived by her beloved husband, David; her daughters, Lori and husband Scott Osborne and Lisa and husband Kevin Bemrich. She had four grandchildren, David and his wife Alexandra Osborne, Joshua Osborne, Amanda and husband James Jones, Kevin Bemrich Jr. She also had four great- grand children, Ashley, Allison, Aaron and Tyler. Graveside service and burial were held at Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas.


 


 

Blanche Thompson

Blanche M. Thompson DAMASCUS, Va. Blanche M. Thompson, age 99, passed away Friday, Jan. 1, 2010, at Grace Healthcare Center of Abingdon, Va. She was a lifelong resident of Damascus and was a daughter of the late Ervin Manuel Thompson and Ida Elizabeth Jenkins Thompson. She retired from Brookmade Hosiery Mill in Damascus and had been very active in the community helping people. She had written a weekly column, "Damascus News", in the Washington County Newspaper for many years. She also had been a very active member of First Baptist Church in Damascus where she was a former church secretary and clerk, taught Sunday school, was active in the WMU Baptist Women and the church choir. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Fleming and Bertha Thompson; and two brothers, Joe Thompson and Charles Thompson. She is survived by two brothers, Herman Thompson of Damascus and Ralph Thompson Sr. and his wife Frances, of Madison, Tenn.; two sisters-in-law, Faye Thompson of Bristol Tennessee, and Ethel Thompson of Mountain City, Tenn.; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 2010, in the First Baptist Church in Damascus with Rev. Wayne Guynn and Mr. Ralph Thompson Jr. officiating. The committal service and interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus. Pallbearers will be David Thompson, Charles Edward Thompson, Bobby Thompson, Ralph Thompson Jr., Sam Fleming, Larry Miller, Charles Cook, and Ralph Cornett. Honorary pallbearers will be the former and present deacons of First Baptist Church. The family would like to extend a special thanks to all the nurses and staff at Grace Healthcare Center and the Hospice of Southwest Virginia. Campbell, Virginia Allen Loy

Virginia Allen Loy Campbell, 77, of Blacksburg, Va., died on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at Montgomery Regional Hospital following a two-month illness. She was born on October 23, 1932, in Tarboro, N.C., the daughter of William Webb Loy and Virginia Gray Thigpen Loy., She grew up in Eustis, Fla., and was a 1950 graduate of Eustis High School. She married her high school sweetheart, Hugh Gregory Campbell, at the age of 18, and upon his graduation from Florida State University, moved to Blacksburg in 1955., She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She was a lifelong Episcopalian. An avid bridge player, she earned the rank of Life Master from the American Contract Bridge League in October 2009. Her competitive spirit extended beyond bridge to include a wide range of sports, both as a participant and spectator. Buchanan of Charlottesville and Alan G. Thompson of Washington, D.C.; a great- granddaughter, Olivia C. Thompson; and three sisters, Martha Spradlin of Scottsville, Nellie Murano of Richmond, and Susie Mills of Charlottesville., He was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Jo Meadows; and a daughter, Ginger Faye Meadows., He was a World War II veteran who served in Germany and the Philippines with the 86th Infantry Division. He was retired from the Virginia Electric Power Company. An active member of Cherry Avenue Christian Church, he shared his talents with his family, friends and community. FRANKLIN, Mrs. Covie Brown, age 85, of Midlothian, went home to be with her Lord on January 4, 2010. She was the widow of Ed Franklin; and she was preceded in death by four grandsons, Adam, Cody, Cleg and Kenny. She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law and 13 grandchildren: Peggy and Roy Morse and their children, Michael, Linda, Curtis, Karen and Scott; Hazel and Leroy Boyd and their children, Barbara and Jonathan; Barbara Musick and Clyde McReynolds and her sons, Mark and Jason; Nancy Leslie and her daughter, Angelia; Deborah and Lonnie Provo and their sons, Keith and Kyle; and Jean and Gary Orye and their son, Brandon; 17 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Edith Buck. She was a faithful member of Elkhardt Baptist Church for 47 years. Her remains rest at Bliley's-Chippenham, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday. Cyril E. Maire Jr.

MAIRE, Cyril E. Jr., of Richmond, died January 4, 2010. He is survived by his widow, Alice Cook Stephens Maire; his daughters, Sarah Ann Shelko and husband, Joseph, Amiee Melissa Poe and husband, William, and Elise Ann Maire; daughter-in-law, Cathy Edwards Maire; three stepsons, George M. Stephens III and wife, Cathy, Thomas W. Stephens and wife, Capsen, and John P. Stephens and wife, Lynn; two sisters, Mrs. G. Edmond Massie and Betty Maire Herndon; numerous grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Bergmann Maire; and their son, Cyril E. Maire III. Cyril was born in Park Ridge, N.J. in 1922, moved to Richmond in 1938 and graduated from Glen Allen High School, Class of 1940. In 1944 he graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. During WWII, Cyril made five successful voyages to the European and Mediterranean war zones. At the end of the war, Cyril returned to George Washington University, Washington, D.C., to complete his education and resume his career in banking. Cyril retired in 1987 as an executive vice-president of Sovran Bank, a subsidiary of Bank of America. A memorial service will be held 12 noon Friday, at Bon Air United Methodist Church, 1645 Buford Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Edmond A. Damus, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Friday, January 1, 2010, at Lewis-Gale Hospital. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Pauline A. Damus; his son, Stephen E. Damus, of Buford, Ga.; and his daughter, Jean Marie Damus, of Los Angeles, Calif. He has a surviving brother, William Robert Damus, of Tampa, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews. Ed Damus was preceded in death by his father, Abraham Damus; mother, Mary Debs Damus; sisters, Souad Khoury and Agnes Alouf; and his brother, Nassief Damus. Ed worked many years as a field underwriter for Monarch Life Insurance Company. He and his wife, Pauline, attended Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church and Saint Elias Church in Roanoke. Ed was a generous man who volunteered at Lewis-Gale Hospital. He raised money for St. Jude Children's Hospital. He delivered Meals on Wheels for 14 years. He was an interpreter for the Red Cross Chapter in Roanoke. He supported the RAM House by hiring those less fortunate. He secured the land and built the Hidden Valley Intermediate Schools baseball fields. He was active in the Kawanis and worked as an arbitrator for the Better Business Bureau in Roanoke., Ed felt privileged to live here. Whenever he was called upon, he responded as a loyal citizen of his adopted country and community. He adored his family and cherished his friends. An avid bridge player; he made a point of spreading good cheer wherever he went and of easing the lives of others. Dana Frank Silecchia, 56, of Gordonsville, died on Saturday, January 2, 2010, at his residence., He was born on April 7, 1953, in Wychoff, New Jersey, a son of Pat Frank Selecchia of Sarasota, Florida, and the late Helen Winifred O'Harra Silecchia, who preceded him in death., Mr. Silecchia graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English. Dan proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy and retired with 27 years of service. He then continued his career with the Norfolk Public Works Center, civil service, and completed 20 years of service. Dan was a member of the American Legion and was a member of the VFW, Tidewater and Post 49, Smithfield. He was also a life member of the Norview Masonic Lodge #113, Norfolk., He enjoyed life to the fullest and was an avid fisherman. Dan was passionate about hunting and the great outdoors. He was a member of the Chuckatuck Hunt Club and the Darden Store Hunt Club. He will be sorely missed by his friends, family and "hunting buddies" in the community., Dan was a member of Faith Freewill Baptist Church and was involved in many aspects of the church., A beloved father, grandfather, brother, Dan was loved and respected by all who knew him. David Wayne DeHart, 55, of Radford, Va., passed away on Monday, January 4, 2010, with his wife and brothers by his side. He was born on November 22, 1954, to the late Joseph W. and Louise T. DeHart. He was also preceded in death by his grandmother, Bertha Gordon. Surviving is his loving wife, Marian Osborne DeHart; son, James Michael DeHart; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Joseph W. and Kim DeHart Jr., Steven DeHart, and Tony and Susan DeHart; father and mother-in-law, Frank and Trish Bender Osborne; sister and brother-in-law, Laura Osborne and Steven G. Kirk; brother-in-law, Joseph Alexander Osborne IV; niece and husband, Amy and Michael Watkins; nephews, Mathew, Andrew, and Eric DeHart; and great-nephew and niece, Wyatt and Tess Watkins., David was a Radford, Va., native and resident and a 1974 graduate of Radford High School-where he played football and ran track under the Legendary Coach Lineburg. During his high school career he was a three-sport letterman in Football, Winter Track, and Spring Track winning 10 letters., At Radford High School, David played on the nationally ranked football team during the 1971 and 1972 football seasons. The team had a 48 game winning streak and won the Virginia State AA Football Championship in 1971 and 1972. During those years at Radford High School, Va. Tech Coach Frank Beamer was David's position coach before leaving Radford and going to Maryland as a Graduate Assistant Coach., David also ran on the Radford High School State Championship Track team and won both Indoor and Outdoor AA State championship in 1972 to 1973. David was the individual state indoor and runner-up outdoor Pole Vault champion in 1974, clearing 13.5 feet., In the 1974 Virginia Tech football season, David walked on the team as a 5'9," 180 pound linebacker. In his sophomore season was moved to weak side (bandit) defensive end where he was a three-year letterman and started at defensive end his senior season. David was known as the smallest starting defensive end in Division I and probably still holds that title today. She is also survived by the extended family of husband, John Engle., Doris attended Midway Elementary School and Sophia High School in West Virginia, then moved with her family to Newport News in 1961, where she graduated from Warwick High School in 1964. In 1993, she retired as a budget analyst from Fort Eustis after 25 years of service, and then from the City of Newport News in 2007., Doris enjoyed entertaining family and friends, cooking, reading, and keeping John busy with a never ending to-do list. She enjoyed weekend Pinochle games with John and their friends Norm and Teresa, and relished receiving their famous winner's dinners – menus selected by the winning couple and prepared and served in five-star fashion by the losing couple., Doris would like to thank her family doctor, Sarah Bushey, who she greatly respected and who felt like a member of her family. She also thanks all the "angels" who looked over her and assisted in getting her through the hospital stays and moved in until she and John could manage alone. She was the widow of William Thomas "Bill" Agnew and the daughter of the late, Dr. George Henry Latham II and Beulah Pollock Latham. Dorothy is survived by her four children, Betty Agnew Bell and husband, Dr. Hunter Bell, of Manassas, Helen Agnew Willis and husband, Buck Willis, of Chesterfield, Dr. William Thomas "Tom" Agnew and wife, Lee Agnew, of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Robert Maurice "Bob" Agnew and wife, Helena Agnew, of Chesterfield; 11 grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, 13 nieces and nephews; and a brother, George Henry Latham of Richmond. She is also survived by her brother-in-law, James Perkins Agnew of Burkeville; and sister-in-law, Helen Agnew Koonce of High Point, N.C. Dorothy attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. and Medical College of Virginia Nursing School and retired from the Nottoway Co. Department of Social Services. She played the organ for over 50 years in many area churches, most recently in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, where she was a member. Dorothy was active in many organizations including the Three Arts Club and was a past president of the Blackstone Garden Club. She was a gracious lady who took great joy in all aspects of life. SUMTER, S.C. - Erich Matthew Wedding, age 31, and beloved husband of Heather Ross Wedding, became one of God's angels at his home on Saturday, Dec. 26, 2009, following a three year courageous fight against colon cancer., Born on May 9, 1978, in Morehead City, N.C., he was the beloved son of Paul Jay Wedding and Colleen Hall Wedding of Yorktown, Va. Erich graduated in 1996 from Tabb High School in Yorktown. He served 13 years active duty in the United States Air Force, where his final duty station was at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, achieving the rank of T/SGT. Erich was the recipient of the USAF Achievement Award, USAF Commendation Award. For two years he served on the USAF Honor Guard and received the PACAF CSS Team Excellence Award, and the National Defense Medal. Erich was a pack committee member of the Cub Scout Pack #1605 in Lajesfield, Azores, Portugal, where he received an Appreciation Award., In addition to his wife and parents, he leaves behind to cherish his memory a stepdaughter, Kelci Ross; a sister, Elise Lemay of Corpus Christi, Texas; a brother, Adam Wedding of Hampton, Va.; five aunts; eight uncles; a niece; a nephew; four brothers-in-law; in-laws, Thomas and Liese Ross, and Tom and Dianna Elliott; maternal grandmother, Marian M. James "Jim' Lawrence Tester JOHNSON CITY, Tenn . James "Jim" Lawrence Tester, 79, of 115 Bowers St., died Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at his residence. Mr. Tester was a native of Johnson County, Tenn., and had lived in Johnson City most of his life. He was a son of the late J.S. and Fronia Tester. Mr. Tester was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the Sinking Creek Baptist Church, the Watauga Lodge 622 F and AM, and a Scottish Rite Jericho Shriner. Mr. Tester was retired from Tennessee Eastman as a control operator. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mary Louise Sawyer Tester in 2004; and by two sisters, Marie Dugger and Beatrice Watson. Survivors include a daughter, Anita and her husband Keith Cook of Jonesborough; a niece, Clara Saylor of Bluff City; grandchildren, Marcus Johnson, Cameron Cook, Caitlin Cook, all of Jonesborough, Whitney Rose of Wartburg, Tenn., and Misty Harrison of Bessimer City, N.C.; special friends, Genevieve Hopper and Ginger Baker of Bristol Tennessee; several nieces and nephews also survive. Joseph played flag football and always watched the Dallas Cowboys with his dad and brother. He loved going to the beach every summer and was an accomplished boogie-boarder. When he wasn't running, playing and having lots of fun, Joseph loved to snuggle up for a little quiet time with his mama. Joseph had a wonderful sense of humor, a beautiful smile, and a wise, old soul. He was creative and inquisitive, thoughtful and kind, full of spunk and mischief. Joseph's loving heart and amazing generosity of spirit was demonstrated by his wish to donate his organs. JONES, Judith Anne, of Mechanicsville, departed this life at age 66, in the early morning of January 4, 2010. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Roy Donald Jones; and her twin children, Dawn Michelle Jones and David Michael Jones, both of Richmond. Judy was born in Baltimore, the only child of Mr. Otto and Mrs. Jessie Dare Reynolds. After graduating from Williamston High School, she moved to Richmond to work in advertising at Richmond Newspapers, where she met the man who would be her devoted and loving husband for 44 years; they married at First Baptist Church in May 1965. They enjoyed many happy travels together in their early marriage, visiting Hawaii, Mexico and even far-off Tahiti. Judy was later employed at Hunton & Williams, but when she became a mother she devoted her life to raising her beloved children. Anna Scott Lucas, 16, of Roanoke, Va., peacefully passed away at home with her dogs and family at her side from this earthly life to Eternal life on Monday, January 4, 2010. She was a student at Roanoke Catholic School. Anna's feisty spirit kept a smile on her face and love in her heart despite a long and difficult battle with cancer for over five years. She endured two bone marrow transplants at Duke University Medical Center with relentless optimism. Anna's strength and perseverance was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. She helped raise funds for the American Cancer Society by walking in the "Bark For Life" just four months ago., We would like to thank Duke University Pediatric Bone Marrow Transplant Center for trying everything possible to save her life. The nurses and staff are the best and she loved everyone there. We also thank the Roanoke Catholic School community and our neighbors for their prayers and unending support., Anna was an avid reader, especially of topics on theology and spirituality. She loved the library. One of her poems is etched in stone in the "Reading Garden" at the Gainsboro Library in Roanoke., Anna always had a special place in her heart for animals. Her dogs, Emma and Chloe, kept her strong to the end., At Anna's request, final arrangements will be private. Harding; daughter, Angela Harding-Pigg and husband, Jimmie Pigg, of Midlothian; son, Andy Harding and wife, Alison Harding, of Powhatan; grandchildren, Chance Harding, Trey Pigg, Bethany Harding, Jon Pigg and wife, Ashley Pigg, Dillon Harding, Summer Harding; mother, Laurice Sizer of Emporia; brother, C.P. and wife, Ann Harding, of Illinois; and sister-in-law, Wanda Harding of Virginia. He was preceded in death by father, Norman A. Harding Sr.; brother, Lynwood Harding; and sister, Donna Harding Long. Norman Harding graduated from Greensville High School in 1957. He then served four years in the United States Air Force. He further served his community in the Richmond Police Department for 27 years, beginning as a Patrol Officer and ending his career as Detective Sergeant of Homicide. Pat Christensen, 80, died on Thursday, December 17, 2009, at The Laurels of Charlottesville, while recovering from a brief illness., She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, in May, 1929 to the late Whitney Gordon Leighty and Edna Coder Leighty. Her family moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where she was raised on the banks of the Mississippi River and started her lifetime love of the water., After she married, she moved to Skaneateles, New York, where she worked for the Skaneateles school system and was a charter member of the Skaneateles Ambulance Corp for 12 years. After her marriage ended, her beloved mother-in-law, Helen Christensen, offered help if Pat wanted to leave the snows of New York to move to Dallas, Texas, which she did in 1981., Years later, after the death of her mother-in-law and the failure of multiple savings and loan companies she worked for, she moved to Charlottesville, Virginia. She had fallen in love with Virginia when she visited from drab, winter ravished New York State at Easter and the gardens were in bloom and beautiful., Pat lived in Charlottesville since 1989, with both appearance and activity level defying her age. She spent hours at the Senior Center, MedFit, ACAC, and in local classes on an interesting variety of topics. Pat travelled at every opportunity, with trips ranging from international vacations to multiple visits to Williamsburg, Virginia, every year. Pat's true passion was being a volunteer at the University of Virginia Medical Center where she started in the Cancer Center in 1992, moved to the Hospice and Palliative Care Unit for nine years and then returned to her first love, the Cancer Center. Ruth B. LEE

Mrs. Lee was born in Portsmouth, the youngest of eight children of the late Rebecca and Harry Berlin. When she was eight, her mother died, and because of the size of the family, she was then raised by her oldest sibling, the late Minnie Hyman and her husband, Jake. She adored them both. She grew up in Norfolk, and graduated from Maury High School in 1938., Mrs. Lee resided on the Peninsula for most of her adult life, living for 50 years with her husband, the late Martin T. Lee, in their beloved home on Longwood Drive in the Riverside area of Newport News., Mr. and Mrs. Lee were among the founding members of Temple Sinai, the Peninsula's Reform Jewish congregation in 1955. She was active in the Temple's Sisterhood, and was also a member of the National Council of Jewish Women and Hadassah., Mrs. Lee was a longtime member of The Great Books Club, a group of women from the Riverside and Hidenwood areas of Newport News, who enjoy reading and discussing the literary classics. The club was established in 1970, and carries on to this day. Ruth and Martin were married for 62 years and they truly adored one another. They loved to dance, which they did into their eighties. They were both avid bridge players, and enjoyed playing whenever the opportunity presented itself., Mrs. Lee is survived by her two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Richard H. Lee and Helene B. Lee of Midlothian, and James J. Lee and Doris P. Lee of Dallas, Texas. She was born and raised in Blountville, Tenn., and was the last charter member of Cedar Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray H. Walters and wife Shirley of Kingsport and Ronald P. Todd, Daniel B.

Daniel B. (Dan) Todd, of Daleville, Va., died on Saturday, January 2, 2010, after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Mr. Todd was born in Independence, Va., to Bays M. and Blanche Kirk Todd. He was a graduate of Independence High School as valedictorian, National Business College in Roanoke, and the School of Bank Management held at the University of Virginia. He was employed by Grayson National Bank in 1953 and at the Farmers and Merchants Bank in Timberville, Va., in 1965, eventually becoming President, Chief Executive Officer (retiring in 1996), and Chairman of the Board (retiring in 2001)., He lived with his wife of 58 years in retirement in Botetourt County, ultimately residing at the Glebe. He loved his family and his garden. He supplied his neighbors with produce in the summer and was particularly proud of his sweet corn and musk melons., Mr. Todd was a 50 year Mason and Past Master of Independence Masonic Lodge No. #129 A.F. and A.M., as well as Past Master of Boone Lodge No. #247 A.F. and A.M. in Troutville, Va. He was known for his prowess in memorization, having known by heart in excess of 33,000 words comprising the first three degrees of the Blue Lodge Masons. He was also a past member the Richmond Scottish Rite Bodies (32nd Degree) and the ACCA Temple A.A.O.N.M.S., Richmond, Va. He was past president of the Valley Shrine Club in Harrisonburg, Va., and a member of both the Kazim Shrine Temple and the Roanoke Valley Shrine Club of Roanoke, Va., Other distinctions include a listing in the 1968 edition of Outstanding Young Men of America; Past President of Grayson County Businessmen's Club; Membership in the Broadway-Timberville Ruritan Club; and the Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Development Corporation. He was also attained the significant achievement of Past President of the Independent Banker's Association of Virginia., Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Stanley Mitchell Todd; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Beale M. Todd, Sally Cox Todd, James J. Todd, and Alexander Jackson "Jack" Todd., He is survived by his wife, Wilma Gaynelle Cherry Todd, of Daleville, Va.; two daughters, Sherry Todd Vinson, of Fincastle, Va., and Marianne Todd, of Roanoke; one son and daughter-in-law, E. Stephen Todd and Judy Todd, of Christiansburg; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Stella Phipps Todd and Norma Hampton Todd, both of Independence, Va., time on Thursday at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237., The burial of the ashes will take place in Independence Cemetery, Independence, Va., will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, January 8, 2010, in the chapel of Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence, Va. Lillie Mae Curlee Bullock Marshall Lillie Mae Curlee Bullock Marshall, 89, of Lynchburg, departed this life to be with her Lord on Monday, Jan. 4, 2010. She was first married to the late William A. Bullock Jr. and was the loving wife of Laurie Delreign (Pete) Marshall, who would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Jan. 16, 2010. Born March 12, 1920, in Charlotte, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Herbert L. Curlee and Lillie K. Curlee. The family moved to Lynchburg when she was about 12, and she spent the rest of her years here. She started singing in the Euclid Christian Church Choir when she was 14. She was active in the arts community. She was a student of Georgia Morgan and was a talented watercolor artist, specializing in painting of flowers and of landscapes. She exhibited for years at the Lynchburg Art Festival and enjoyed taking painting classes with her friends at the Lynchburg Recreation Department. In later years, she still enjoyed attending the shows at Lynchburg Art Club. She and her husband, Pete, delivered Meals on Wheels after their retirement. They both sang in the Euclid Christian Church Choir until recent years; they also sang duets together on other occasions. Lillie Mae loved Garden Club Day and attended for many years. She was a faithful member of Euclid Christian Church and taught Sunday school at one time. In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughters, Nancy Bullock Weiland of Lynchburg and Carolyn Bullock Harris of Powhatan; grandchildren, Laurie Quesenberry Whelan of Powhatan, John Weiland of Aliquippa, Pa., Frank Weiland of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Natalie Weiland of Richmond; five great-grandchildren; and sisters, Betty Curlee Riley of Wicomico Church and Alice Curlee Lucas of Bedford. A celebration of Lillie Mae's life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 2010, in Euclid Christian Church by the Rev. Edward Parrish III. A reception will immediately follow in the church fellowship hall. The graveside service will follow the reception at 1:30 p.m. in Fort Hill Memorial Park. She was born in Mechanicsburg, Pa., Jan. 11, 1917, and orphaned before the age of eight. She was raised at the Virginia Baptist Children's Home (now Hope Tree Family Services) in Salem, Va. Vergie was a wife, mom and homemaker who lived her Christian faith everyday. Above all else, she loved her Savior and was forever faithful. 'For thou art my hope, O Lord God; thou art my trust from my youth.' Psalm 71:5., A longtime member of Hilton Baptist Church, she taught children in Sunday School, was active in W.M.U., and the Adult Choir. She has resided with her daughter and son-in-law since 1995 and became a member of Tsena Commocko Baptist Church., She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Herman C. Dunn; her son, Herman M. Dunn; and her brother, William Drewrey., She is survived by one daughter, Janice White and her husband, Joseph, of Providence Forge; two granddaughters, Vickie Joyner (John) of Cameron, N.C., and Crystal Price (Charles) of Newport News; four great-grandchildren; one (soon to be two) great-great grandchild; two nieces, Ruby James (Ken) and Eva Smith (Larry); and her beloved pet, Chessie Cat., 'Families are like quilts-lives pieced and stitched together; colored by happiness and tears; bound by memories and love-cherished throughout the years.' WILLIAM F. FOSTER

FOSTER, William F., passed peacefully from this world into the joy of Heaven on Tuesday, December 29, 2009 at CJW Johnston-Willis Hospital, Richmond, Va. Mr. Foster was born in Roslyn, Long Island, N.Y. on January 30, 1915, the son of William F. Foster Sr. and Sadie Foster (nee Sexton). He graduated from Roslyn High School and worked in private business until the outbreak of WWII, when he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving honorably in the Mediterranean and in Italy. Upon his discharge from the Army, he returned home and married the former Lillian Bullock of Richmond, Va. on December 19, 1946. The couple then made their home in Richmond after a brief stay in Roslyn. Mr. Foster was a founding member of St. Mark's United Methodist Church in Midlothian, Va. As an avid woodworker and hobbyist, Mr. Foster crafted wooden plaques depicting signs of the Apostles, which exemplify his faith and his love of woodcraft and for the church. Mr. Foster is survived by five nieces, several great-nephews and great-nieces and also leaves several great-great-nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 59 years in May 2005; and his sister, Muriel Foster Jacobsen in 1996. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, January 8, 2010 at St. Mark's United Methodist Church. The Rev. David Bonney will officiate. Committal service will follow at Dale Memorial Park. HUSKERSON, Mr. Willie Howard "Sitty," passed away December 31, 2009. Willie was born April 22, 1939 to Mary Bailey and Tom Floyd Huskerson. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. Willie is survived by his wife, Judy Harris Huskerson; children, Bridget Harris, Lisa Butler and Kenneth Harris (Michelle); six grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is also survived by four sisters, Mary F. Harris, Shirley Stitt, Maria Pollard (Houston) and Martha Mobley; four brothers, Tom Floyd Huskerson Sr. (Viola), Henry Huskerson (Katherine), Joseph Huskerson (Shirley) and George Huskerson (Bernice); three aunts, Ruth Floyd, Ada Bailey and Kathleen Bailey; one uncle, Ananias Bailey; one brother-in-law, Louis Harris; one sister-in-law, Shirley Collins; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th Street, where the family will receive friends Wednesday (today) from 7 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. Rev.
