Alfred C. Hall 

Jan 12, 2010 Alfred Charlie "A.C." Hall, 80, of Martinsville, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was born in Surry County, N.C., on April 28, 1929, to Reverdy Charlie Hall and Mary Tate Hall. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six sisters, Carrie Hall Reynolds, Ruth Hall Cox, Joyce Hall Chappell, Susie Hall Millard, Nettie Hall Bryant and Alice Hall Sechrest; and four brothers, James Carlos Hall, Robert Reed Hall, Clark Turner Hall and William Oscar Hall. He served in the Army during the Korean conflict and along with Wayne Compton, owned and operated Television Specialist. For the past 32 years, Hall had been a licensed real estate broker and certified real estate appraiser in his own firm, A.C. Hall, Realtor. He was a past president and director of Martinsville/Henry/Patrick Counties Association of Realtors. He was chairman of Professional Standards and Ethics Committees for several years and served on the Henry County Equalization Board. He was a member and deacon at Fort Trial Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Opal R. Hall of the home; a daughter, Janet Lynn Hall Wolfe of Martinsville; two brothers, John Anderson Hall of Collinsville and Thomas Benton Hall of Hampton; two sisters, Alma Hall Enfield of Cana and Birtha Hall Thomas of Pilot Mountain, N.C. The funeral will be at 7:30 p.m. today at Fort Trial Baptist Church with Dr. Joey McNeill officiating. The family will receive friends at the church today from 5:30 p.m. until time for the service, and other times at the home. Burial will be private at Mount Hermon Church of the Brethren cemetery, Bassett. Memorials may be made to Fort Trial Baptist Church, 170 Oak Level Road, Stanleytown, Va. 24168. CALL, Alvin, 82, passed away January 11, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Gerline; and daughter, Linda. He is survived by his son, Roger and his wife, Anna. George Bernard (Roy) Argabright, of Roanoke County, Va., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, January 10, 2010. He was 53 years old and was retired from the United States Air Force, stationed at Dyess Air Force Base. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Argabright Reed. He is survived by three sisters, Lou Emma Richards, of Roanoke, Va., Mary P. Blake, of Pulaski, Va., and Ida P. Nanny, of Draper, Va. Services will be held at noon on Wednesday, January 13, 2010, at Oakey's South Chapel on Brambleton Ave. Dr. Ken Scoggins will officiate. Interment will follow in Rest Vale Cemetery, Floyd County. Roark., In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James S. Jikomes; a daughter, Virginia Zampini; three brothers, John, James and Randy Roark; a grandson, Joey Quade; a great- granddaughter, Imani Douglas; and a son-in-law, Richard Dewey., She is survived by five children, Debra Deane and her husband, Buddy, Rhonda Quade and her husband, Joe, William Zampini III, Clara Dewey and Fannie Breeden; and her husband, Joe; two sisters, Mary Hurlburt of Bosque, New Mexico, and Helen Ford of Charlottesville; a brother, Jack Roark of Charlottesville; one aunt, Gladys Thompson of Charlottesville; 18 grandchildren; 25 great- grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews., While Barbara worked many jobs throughout her life, her most important was caring for her family. She was a life-long resident of Charlottesville and graduated from Lane High School in 1954. She was a passionate gardener who loved her flowers. Her dreams where only to see her flowers bloom in the spring. Ray and Nellie Sprouse Ray., He was a self employed General Contractor for over 30 years., Calvin was a wonderful father and husband, a born again Christian, a Baptist and Democrat, in that order. He was an ordained Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Baptist Men Director at Ridgecrest Baptist Church. He was past president of the Albemarle County Fair and served on their Board of Directors for 17 years., He is survived by his wife Judy Marion Ray; three daughters, Billie Taylor and her husband, Wayne, of Lovingston, Kim Dulany and her husband, Doug, of Cabot, Arkansas, Jackie Agee and her husband, J.C., of North Garden; two sons, Calvin Ray II, and his wife, Tina, of Esmont, and John Ray of Charlottesville. His best friend and brother, Mitch Ray of Schuyler; two sisters, Kitty Sandridge and Theresa Martin, both of Charlottesville; grandchildren, Madelyn Taylor, Erik Dulany, Patrick Taylor, Aaron Dulany, C.W. MAIRE, Cyril E. Jr., of Richmond, died January 4, 2010. He is survived by his widow, Alice Cook Stephens Maire; his daughters, Sarah Ann Shelko and husband, Joseph, Amiee Melissa Poe and husband, William, and Elise Ann Maire; daughter-in-law, Cathy Edwards Maire; three stepsons, George M. Stephens III and wife, Cathy, Thomas W. Stephens and wife, Capsen, and John P. Stephens and wife, Lynn; two sisters, Mrs. G. Edmond Massie and Betty Maire Herndon; numerous grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Bergmann Maire; and their son, Cyril E. Maire III. Cyril was born in Park Ridge, N.J. in 1922, moved to Richmond in 1938 and graduated from Glen Allen High School, Class of 1940. In 1944 he graduated from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y. During WWII, Cyril made five successful voyages to the European and Mediterranean war zones. At the end of the war, Cyril returned to George Washington University, Washington, D.C., to complete his education and resume his career in banking. Cyril retired in 1987 as an executive vice-president of Sovran Bank, a subsidiary of Bank of America. A memorial service will be held 12 noon Friday, at Bon Air United Methodist Church, 1645 Buford Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Donald Roy Wilson POUNDING MILL, Va. Mr. Donald Roy Wilson, age 77, of 2879 Wardell Road, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at a Richlands, Va., hospital following a brief illness. He was born in Richlands and was a son of the late Roy Glen and Marjorie Lester Wilson, both Tazewell County natives. He was a lifelong resident of the Tazewell County area, a 1950 graduate of Richlands High School, a U.S. Navy Korean War Ceteran, and was a member of the Tazewell Presbyterian Church. He was a retired brakeman for Norfolk & Western and Norfolk & Southern Railway and was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen. He was a member of the Sandy Valley Masonic Lodge 17 and Kazim Temple of Roanoke, Va. He was an avid fisherman and member of the Falls Mills Fishing Club and was also a great gardener who loved to share his bounty. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Peggy Smith Wilson; and two brothers-in-law, James "Tince" Smith and Douglas A. Smith. Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Barbara Steele Vandyke Wilson; one stepson, Mr. Joseph Vandyke and wife, Laura of Sterling, Va.; one sister, Mrs. Janet Wilson Smith of Blountville, Tenn.; three grandchildren who were the love of his life, James Vandyke, Emily Vandyke, and Christine Vandyke; one sister-In-law, Jimmie Ruth Speeks and husband, Dwight; nephews, Randy Smith and wife, Karen and Jeff Smith and wife, Anne; nieces, Cathy Cox and husband, Greg and Terri Alsbrook; great-nephews, Jason Alsbrook, Will Smith, Evan Smith, Avery Smith, and Graham Smith; great- nieces, Erin Hanna and husband, Dylann, Jessica Blankenship and husband, Eddie, and Kelly Smith; extended family, Raymond Smith and wife, Anna of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Mary Jane Lockhart and husband, Jim of Matthews, N.C. Joseph W. McDaniel Joseph Wayne McDaniel, 71, of Bassett, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at the Stanleytown Health and Rehab Center. He was born in New Jersey on May 14, 1938, to Joseph Woodrow McDaniel and Helen Kraus McDaniel. His parents preceded him in death. McDaniel graduated from Princeton University in New Jersey and was an inventor. He held several patents on board games. He had served in the Army, and he was an active member of Crosspoint Church in Bassett. Surviving are three sons, Timothy McDaniel, Jim McDaniel and David McDaniel, all of Kalispell, Mont.; one daughter, Kelly Hartigan of Kalispell; and six grandchildren. The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the South Chapel of Bassett Funeral Service with Pastor Carl Keith officiating. Burial will be in Kalispell. She became an accompanist for numerous chamber groups and amateur orchestras. After her retirement, she moved to Williamsburg and soon found friends in the music community. She was elected president of the Wednesday Morning Music Club and became an accompanist for the Women's Community Chorus. She was a member of Bruton Parish Episcopal Church and loved playing bridge and traveling with friends., She is survived by her nieces, Carolyn S. Scattergood, of Gilford, N.H., and Marcia S. Wilkins, of Hanover, N.H.; one grandniece, Deborah S. Clough, of Acton, Mass.; two grandnephews, Joseph A. Scattergood, of Derry, N.H., and Paul S. Fannie Kelly CLEVELAND, Va. Mrs. Fannie Kelly, age 93, passed away Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, at her home. Born March 24, 1916, in Russell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Sylvester and Henrietta Osborne Rasnake. She was a beloved wife, and the best mother any children could have. She was loving and full of life. She lived her entire 93 years within one ½ mile of where she was born on Sandy Ridge. She loved to travel taking many vacations with family and friends. One of her passions was cooking and celebrating any occasion with family and friends even in later years, never tiring of them. The most precious people in her life were her husband, children, and grandchildren, making them many beautiful quilts through the years. She was a member of Clinchview Freewill Baptist Church, where her husband still pastors with his grandson-in-law, Leon Musick. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Lawrence Kelly in 1967; an infant son, Lewis in 1940; a grandson, Michael Musick in 2002; six sisters, Ellen, Ada, Myrtle, Lizzie, Laura, and Delphia, and five brothers, Rit, John, Harmon, Clarence, and Campbell. Survivors include her husband of 70 years, Rev. George HAGERMAN

HAGERMAN, George M., of Virginia Beach, retired U. S. Navy Captain, died in his sleep on January 6, 2010 at the Atlantic Shores continuing care community, where he and his wife, Ruth, have lived for the past five years. He was 93 years old and lived a good, long life. George M. Hagerman was born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania on July 14, 1917. His family moved to Hagerstown, Md., Woodstock, Va., and then finally Richmond, Va., where he met his bride-to-be, Ruth Keppel. He entered the United States Naval Academy in June 1938, graduating in February 1941. He served on two destroyers during World War II, on North Atlantic convoy duty aboard the USS LEA (1941-1943) and in the Caribbean and Pacific theatres aboard the USS WADSWORTH (1943-1945). While in the Pacific, he received a Bronze Star during the Bougainville campaign and a Silver Star during the Okinawa campaign. USS WADSWORTH (DD-516) received a Presidential Unit Citation for her actions off Okinawa. Following the war, he served as executive officer on the USS O'HARE (1945-1946), operations officer on the USS BOSTON (1956-1958), and commanding officer of the USS HAMBLETON (1946-1947), USS WREN (1951-1953), and USS HYADES (1962-1963), providing underway replenishment to our naval blockade during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis and evacuating military dependents from Guantanamo Bay to Norfolk, Virginia. He was an associate professor of Naval Science (NROTC) at the University of Virginia from 1947 to 1949, aide and flag secretary to the Commander Amphibious Training Command, U.S. Atlantic Fleet (1949-1951), and head of Functional Training Section, Bureau of Personnel, Washington, D.C. (1953-1956). He was also involved in European defense planning (1960-1962) and helped organize Operation Sea Spray (1963). Overseas duty took him and his family to Europe, first to Bremerhaven, Germany, where he served in the Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) from 1958 to 1959, after which he was assigned to the NATO Defense College in Paris, France (1959-1960). He and his family also lived in Korea (1965-1967), where he served as assistant chief of staff of the United Nations Command concerned with military and political affairs. He ended his military career as director of the Navy's Foreign Military Assistance Division (1967-1971), service for which he received the Legion of Merit. Married to his beloved wife Ruth for 67 years, the couple had three children: Polly, Peggy, and George Jr. Polly resides with her husband, David Long, in Mt. Airy, N.C. Peggy resides with her husband, Wayne Wadlington, in Mechanicsville, Va. George Jr. resides in Alexandria, Va. He is also survived by two grandsons, David and Patrick Long; by a granddaughter, Keppel Wood; and by four great-grandchildren: William, Alex, Victoria, and Katia. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 15, at Hollywood Cemetery, 412 South Cherry Street in Richmond, Va. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 16, at First Presbyterian Church, 300 36th Street in Virginia Beach, Va., followed by a reception in the church's fellowship hall. PERKINS, Josephine Lucille Presley, 95, of Jarratt, Va., beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, left us to be with her Lord and reunite with her loving husband of 66 years, Benjamin, on Monday, January 11, 2010. A lifelong resident of Greensville County, she was born on December 9, 1914, the youngest child of Josie Adeline Gregory Presley and James Henry Presley. In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by five sisters, two brothers, four stepsisters and a stepbrother. Leaving to cherish her memory is her daughter, Patricia Perkins of Jarratt; son, George B. "G. B." Perkins Jr. (Georgette) of Gasburg, Va.; daughter, Estelle P. Kidd (Buddie) of Brodnax, Va.; grandchildren, Kim Edwards (Doug), Sandra Inge (Steve), Ben Perkins (Karen), Kay Elliott (Mike); great-grandchildren, Cyndal Perkins, Kayla and Libbie Watts, Tori and Hailey Inge, Zoe and Wyatt Edwards, Hunter and Colby Elliott; brother-in-law, Hugh Perkins (Ruby); also, many cherished nieces, nephews, and friends who knew "Aunt Cille." He was born to Rachel and Hugh Hitchens Sr. on Aug. 18, 1942., Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Hugh W. Hitchens Jr. and William E. Hitchens., Jimmy was a candymaker for 42 years, working for Wythe Candy in Williamsburg. He was a member of the Williamsburg Exchange Club. In his youth he was involved with the Common Glory in Williamsburg. Jimmy was an avid reader and a great conversationalist. He served in the Army, and was stationed both in Vietnam and Italy., Mr. Hitchens is survived by his sister, Mamie Ruth Hitchens Blanton and her husband, William; his sister-in-law, Cynthia Hitchens; two nieces, Virginia and her husband, Michael Stewart, and Paula Hitchens; one nephew, Hugh A. Hitchens and his wife, Sheila; a grandnephew, Alexander S. Hitchens; and a grandniece, Grace A. DEANE, Jeffrey Curtis, age 45, of Hartfield, Va., died Saturday, January 9, 2010 at his Healy's Mill home. He worked for 27 years in construction, carpentry and cabinet- making. He is survived by his daughter, Patricia Deane of Richmond; his father, Curtis Deane of Hartfield; three brothers, Steven, Mark and Matthew of Richmond. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Saluda. Jeffrey Scott Duwe

Jeffrey Scott Duwe, Jeff Duwe passed away on Friday, January 8, 2010, at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, Virginia, from injuries sustained in a fall on the ice the previous day. He was 28 years of age. Surrounding his bedside were many family and friends who spent Jeff's final hours reminiscing about each of their wonderful experiences of Jeff's life. He had a beautiful spirit and he touched the lives of all those he encountered., Jeff was born in Traverse City, Michigan, on May 11, 1981, to Arthur "Chip" and Barbara Duwe. He graduated from Traverse City Central High School in June 1999 and from Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan, in December 2004 with a B.S. Degree in Movement Science. After working in Grand Rapids in the health and fitness fields for several years, he relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia to enroll in the Program of Radiologic Technology at the University of Virginia, from which he graduated, ranking first in his class in clinical studies, in June 2008. He loved Virginia, especially the mountains, and so he stayed after graduation to work at the University in the Radiologic Technology Department., Jeff was a devoted son, brother, and most recently, uncle. He had an amazing sense of humor and an ability to turn ordinary situations into special ones. He had a passion for the outdoors, sports, and loved to hike in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He enjoyed frequent trips to Charlotte to visit his aunts and to attend football games., He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Arthur and Nan Duwe, and by his maternal grandparents, Francis and Bonnie Rogers., He is survived by his parents, Chip and Barbara Duwe of Traverse City; his sister, Kara and her fiance, Tom, and brother, Matthew, sister-in-law, Amy, and nephew, Everett, all of Grand Rapids; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and his many friends and colleagues at the University of Virginia Health System., Celebrations of Jeff's life will be held in both Charlottesville and in Michigan at dates to be determined., Jeff was an organ donor so many people will have the gift of life as a result of Jeff's unselfish spirit., The family would like to thank Jeff's many friends, the medical staff who provided loving care to him in his final days and to LifeNet., Arrangements are being handled by the Hill and Wood Funeral Home.

John Benton Meade KINGSPORT, Tenn. John Benton Meade, age 59, passed away on Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, after a lengthy battle with cancer. John was born in Richlands, Va., to the late Elihue Benton Meade and Helen Boyd Meade. John was a graduate of Honaker High School where he traveled to Europe as a member of the All United States Band. He later graduated from East Tennessee State University and began his teaching career in the Sullivan County School System as a band director. He was a member of The Charles Goodwin Orchestra for many years. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader and was active for some time in her church Sunday school. She served as PTA president at Ocean View School and loved visiting with her McDonald's buddies for years each morning, until a stroke forced her to stop driving. Jonnie loved to read and work in her yard. She was an avid tennis fan and thought Pete Sampras was "the best." Jan 12, 2010 Joseph Wayne McDaniel, 71, of Bassett, died Monday, Jan. 11, 2010, at the Stanleytown Health and Rehab Center. He was born in New Jersey on May 14, 1938, to Joseph Woodrow McDaniel and Helen Kraus McDaniel. His parents preceded him in death. McDaniel graduated from Princeton University in New Jersey and was an inventor. He held several patents on board games. He had served in the Army, and he was an active member of Crosspoint Church in Bassett. Surviving are three sons, Timothy McDaniel, Jim McDaniel and David McDaniel, all of Kalispell, Mont.; one daughter, Kelly Hartigan of Kalispell; and six grandchildren. Arlene Hale Kay, formerly of Salem, Virginia, died Thursday, January 7, 2010, at her home in Aiken, South Carolina after a long battle with cancer. She was 71. Born in Upper Darby, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Natalie Harding Hale. She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Robert B. Kay Sr.; sons, Robert E. Webb, of Troutville, Virginia and Robert B. Kay Jr. (and wife, Tiffany), of Columbia, South Carolina; as well as grandson, Charles E. Webb, of Troutville; and granddaughters, Madeline and Lily Reese Kay, of Columbia. She had lived all over the United States and in Germany as a military wife to her first husband during the 1960's and 70's and was a top realtor in Alexandria, Virginia before moving in the early 80's to Salem, where she continued her real estate career and also perfected her golf game. Gifted in the art of friendship, she kept in touch with new and old friends from all the places she had lived, including a group of 15 high school girlfriends from New Jersey who met every year for fun-filled weekends at one or the other's home. Arlene was an impeccable dresser, avid reader, and superb hostess. Her delightfully inimitable laugh will be forever remembered by her family and friends. SMITHFIELD - Lillian Clark Gainey, 87, a resident of Smithfield, passed away Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, in her home., She was the widow of Ellis Cleon Gainey. Born March 15, 1922, in Sussex County, she was the daughter of the late Henry Thomas Clark and Marion Lucille Gay Clark. Mrs. Gainey was a resident of Petersburg for 45 years and after more than 25 years of service with F. W. Woolworth, she retired to her cottage by the river at Burwells Bay in 1985. She loved nature, her family, and her church family at Mill Swamp Baptist Church. She led a courageous battle against her physical limitations and remained a true inspiration to everyone she knew., Mrs. Gainey is survived by two daughters, Sandra G. Bryant and Linda Kay Gainey of Alexandria; grandchildren, Sheila B. Epperley (David) and William R. "Ronnie" Bryant Jr., (Sheila); five great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Lauren Epperley, and Ellis, Emmie, and Evvie Bryant; two sisters, Lucy Melton (Kenny) and Gladys Woolridge (Tem), both of Richmond; and a host of nieces and nephews., She was preceded in death by three sisters, Audrey C. She was active in the Outreach Lunch Program at Trinity Episcopal and the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church. She served on the Executive Committee of the Dioceses of Southwest Virginia, and a member of the Greenville Ruritan Club. One of Mamie's most proud accomplishments was her training of "Therapy Dogs" which where used at Augusta Health, Waynesboro Public Schools and the Western State Hospital by those needing special assistance, she also attended Camp Dragonfly with her therapy dogs., Mrs. Meyers is survived by the following family members and special friends, Hal I. MARSHALL, Mary Lee, 83, of Mechanicsville, went to be with the Lord January 9, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Marshall Jr., and her daughter, Barbara L. Marshall. She is survived by two sons, A. William "Bill" Marshall and his wife, Sondra, and David A. Marshall; two daughters, JoAnn M. Hill and her husband, Ivy, and Hope Childress; daughter-in-law, Theresa Weaver; four sisters, Shirley Cash, Joyce Guilford, Betty Hawks, and Brenda Leach; two brothers, Warren Kenney Sr. and Robert Kenney; eight grandchildren, Scott, Jaison, Michelle, Ivy Jr., David Jr., Christopher, D.J., and Heather; four great-grandchildren, Brittany, Austin, Hailey, and Jacob. Mrs. Marshall was a devoted wife and mother who loved being a fulltime homemaker, and she will be missed by all those whose lives she touched. She was a member of Meadowood Church of God for 42 years. GRAFTON - Mary Hicks, 84, went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 6, 2010, after a short illness. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister., Mary was the second of three children, born to Paul and Thelma Nunn, on Oct. 1, 1925, in Perry, Iowa. She grew up in the town of Clinton, Iowa, having graduated from Clinton High School in 1943. She graduated from St. Luke's Nursing School in Chicago in 1947. Following graduation from nursing training, Mary served at the Fort Defiance Arizona Navajo Hospital. After her time in Arizona, she visited her sister, Marge in Trieste, Italy, where she met her future husband, Gene. They were married in Trieste, in 1948, and Mary was then committed to the life of an Army officer's wife. She saw the world, moving 30 times, most often relocating the family, frequently on short notice. She was incredibly positive and always treated the moves as new, adventurous chapters in her family's book., Mary and Gene enjoyed their retirement years in Grafton. She loved her family, friends, and neighbors. Mary was a regular member of the Fort Eustis Post Chapel, participated in the PWOC, the Retired Officer's Wives Club, and was a tireless supporter of the activities of the 82nd Airborne Association, Hampton Roads Chapter., She was preceded in death by her husband, Orman E. (Gene) Hicks; and her sister, Marge Bryhn., Survivors include a daughter, Gail Riley and husband, Pat of Washington, N.C.; son, Tom Hicks and wife, Nancy of Haddonfield, N.J.; grandchildren, Brian, Lindsay and Andrew, also of Haddonfield. She is also survived by her brother, James Nunn and wife, Susan of Coupeville, Wash., A celebration of Mary's life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, at the Fort Eustis Regimental Memorial Chapel. Wright Jr. and his wife, Barbara, of Palmyra, Virginia; her grandson, Troy Wright and his wife, Dawn, of Palmyra; and her granddaughter, Tracy Wright and her fiance, Brent Mathis, of Palmyra. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Shontell, Destiny, Rebekah and Mya., In 1951, along with her husband, they relocated to Charles County, Maryland, to operate a family owned business. After retiring as a general merchandise store owner in 1979, she spent her time with her grandchildren and traveling with friends and family. Along with her son and family, she moved back to Fluvanna County in 1991 to live out the rest of her life. Bunnie graduated from St. Vincent High School, in Newport News in 1954. Following graduation she entered St. Cecilia Convent, and was a teaching sister of the order, for 16 years. Her assignments included schools in Tennessee and Virginia, notably assignments at Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Newport News and St. Mary Star of the Sea in Phoebus. She was a graduate of Siena College, Memphis, Tenn., In 1969 she felt a new calling to return to the secular life while staying in the educational field and she secured a position teaching in Dallas, Texas. A year later she returned to the Peninsula to teach at Bassette Elementary in the Hampton School System. After teaching a year she met her husband to be, Bill, they married and started a family. After a leave of absence to raise three children she returned to St. Mary's in Phoebus where she taught for many years., In 1995, a yearning for a new challenge led her to Newport Academy, New Horizons Regional Center to teach special education students. She still held this position at the time of her passing. She loved all of her students and bragged about their accomplishments., Her mother, Alma Christine Love, preceded her in death., She is survived by her husband of 38 years, William R. Wiley Jr.; a daughter, Mary Lugo and her husband, William of Yorktown; two sons, Army Major James R. Wiley and his wife, Kristen, now in the Kingdom of Bahrain and William R. Wiley III and his fiancEe, Melinda Andrews of Raleigh, N.C.; her three grandchildren, William (Will) Lugo, Emma Lugo and Noah Wiley; her father, Robert L. She was born in Green Cove, Va., a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willard Furches. Mrs. Poff was a resident of Damascus for over 50 years before moving to Abingdon 17 years ago. She was a former seamstress for the Harwood Manufacturing Company and a member of the Damascus Senior Citizens. She was of the Christian faith. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Poff. She is survived by one daughter, Jackie Camper and husband, Randy of Abingdon; one grandson, Cody Camper of Abingdon; one sister, Clarence Pruitt and husband, Russell of Wellington, Ohio; one half sister, Mary Harless of Mountain City, Tenn.; one brother, James Furches and wife, Ann of Lenoir, N.C.; one half brother, Jim Furches and wife, Chris of Marion, Va.; special niece and family, Carolyn McQuitty and husband, Gene of Rising Sun, Md.; and special loving friends, David and Barbara McCracken. The funeral service for Nellie Poff will be conducted at 2 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 14, 2010, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. John Stapleton officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in Damascus. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service on Thursday afternoon. Pat Christensen, 80, died on Thursday, December 17, 2009, at The Laurels of Charlottesville, while recovering from a brief illness., She was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, in May, 1929 to the late Whitney Gordon Leighty and Edna Coder Leighty. Her family moved to Dubuque, Iowa, where she was raised on the banks of the Mississippi River and started her lifetime love of the water., After she married, she moved to Skaneateles, New York, where she worked for the Skaneateles school system and was a charter member of the Skaneateles Ambulance Corp for 12 years. After her marriage ended, her beloved mother-in-law, Helen Christensen, offered help if Pat wanted to leave the snows of New York to move to Dallas, Texas, which she did in 1981., Years later, after the death of her mother-in-law and the failure of multiple savings and loan companies she worked for, she moved to Charlottesville, Virginia. She had fallen in love with Virginia when she visited from drab, winter ravished New York State at Easter and the gardens were in bloom and beautiful., Pat lived in Charlottesville since 1989, with both appearance and activity level defying her age. She spent hours at the Senior Center, MedFit, ACAC, and in local classes on an interesting variety of topics. Pat travelled at every opportunity, with trips ranging from international vacations to multiple visits to Williamsburg, Virginia, every year. Pat's true passion was being a volunteer at the University of Virginia Medical Center where she started in the Cancer Center in 1992, moved to the Hospice and Palliative Care Unit for nine years and then returned to her first love, the Cancer Center. COPPING, Taylor R. Sr., passed away peacefully on December 12, 2009 amidst the loving care of family and hospice support members at Bon Secours St. Mary's Hospital. Taylor proudly served in the Army Air Corps, received his Master of Science at the University of Richmond, and later served as Executive Director of the American Lung Association in New Mexico and in Virginia. Deacon William Everett (Will) Yuille Deacon William Everett (Will) Yuille was born in Campbell County on Sept. 20, 1909, to the late Julius Luke Yuille and Elizabeth Frazier Yuille and was their last descendant. William was a devout Christian and active member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church until his illness. He held several positions in the church. He followed his father as superintendent of the Sunday school, encouraging interest by conducting Bible trivia sessions after lessons. Deacon Yuille served as chairman of the Deacon Board, treasurer of the church, choir director and pianist. He was blessed with a melodious baritone voice and loved to sing solos with the choir and his family. It was always a pleasure to hear him at home as he played the organ, piano or guitar. He was preceded in death by his beloved spouse, Helen Dabney Yuille of 58 years, and his oldest daughter, Desiree Yuille. He is survived by three sons, Zenith (Anita) Yuille of Upper Marlboro, Md., Leon (Margaret) Yuille of Hampton and Steven Yuille of Roanoke; six daughters, Dr. Dolores Johns of Roanoke, Shirley James of Hyattsville, Md., Janice Scott and Vivian (Moses) David of Hampton, Helen Thornton of Atlantic City, N.J., and Laverne (Leonard) Bailey of Egg Harbor Township, N.J.; 26 grandchildren, 40 great-children and one great-great-grandchild; four sisters-in-law, Bernice Epps, Dorothy Calloway, Edna Callaway and Beulah Dabney; three brothers-in-law, William Dabney, Edgar Dabney and Carroll Dabney; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010, at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church with the Rev. Anderson Clary Jr. officiating and the Rev. Wallner Jr., Siegfried

Siegfried (Jon) Wallner Jr., 86, of Hickory, N.C., and formerly of Pulaski, Va., died on Sunday, January 10, 2010, at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. He was born on July 27, 1923, in Pulaski, Va., and was the son of the late Siegfried and Marcia Delores (Jarratt) Wallner. He grew up in Jacksonville, Texas, where he was a Boy Scout and earned his Eagle Scout Badge., He graduated from North Carolina State University in 1949, where he was known as "Tex," with a B.A. degree in textiles. On June 27, 1950, he married Stella Dalton Wallner at Christ Episcopal Church in Pulaski, Va. Jon had an extensive career in the hosiery industry, Glen Raven Knitting Mills in Glen Raven, N.C.; Virginia Maid Hosiery Mills in Pulaski, Va.; and Davenport Hosiery Mills in Chattanooga, Tenn., He was president of Magnet Mills in Clinton, Tenn., where he was a lay leader in St. Albans's Episcopal Church, chairman of the board and president of the Anderson County Community Chest and president of the Clinton Civitan Club. From Clinton he went to Indian Head Hosiery Mills in Paducah, Ky.; Kayser Roth in Burlington, N.C., and finished the last 17 years of his career with Adams-Millis Corporation in High Point, N.C. He spent his retirement years in High Point, N.C., Winston-Salem, N.C., Statesville, N.C., and Hickory, N.C., He is survived by one son, Jon Thomas Wallner and his wife, Kate, of Greensboro, N.C.; and two daughters, Marcia Dee Pencola and her husband, Michael, of Hickory, and Celeste Sabel, of Montgomery, Ala. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Marcia Helene Sabel, Samuel Sabel and his wife, Heather, Joshua Pencola, Chelsea Dee Pencola Gelardi, Carley Sarah Pencola, Katherine Adams Wallner and Elizabeth Dalton Wallner; great-grandson, Sebastian Judah Sabel-Sowers; and great-granddaughter, Sophia Grace Gelardi. Also surviving Jon is his beloved Maltese companion, Sophie Mae., John, along with his wife of 57 years, Stella, developed several long-term friendships in the many places they lived. His lifetime passion was golf, watching and attending North Carolina State football and basketball games, working on projects around the house, and visiting the mountains and beaches., He was preceded in death by his wife, Stella Dalton Wallner; parents, Siegfried and Marcia Delores (Jarratt) Wallner; and brother, Jack Devereaux Wallner., s will be held 2 p.m. on Thursday, January 14, 2010, at Seagle Funeral Home with the Rev. Warren Jr., George M.

George M. Warren Jr., 87, died Tuesday, January 12, 2010, at Wellmont Hospice House following an illness of several months. The family maintained their home in Bristol, Va., to the present. Warren was admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of Virginia and the Supreme Court of Appeals, the United States Court for the Western District of Virginia, the United States Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and by association in the states of North Carolina, Tennessee, and West Virginia., Other significant tributes of merit included the Emory and Henry Charter Day Citation, the Bristol Bar Association's Lifetime Service Award, Life Membership in the Bristol Life Saving Crew, and Lifetime Outstanding and Dedicated Service Awards from the Bristol Virginia Police Department and the Bristol Virginia Sheriff's Office, and the Board of Visitors of Emory and Henry College., Warren was elected to the Senate of Virginia in 1963 and served through 1975, representing the Counties of Lee, Scott, Washington, Smyth, a portion of Russell, and the City of Bristol. He was a member of the Senate Committees on Courts of Justice, Finance, Privileges and Elections, and Roads and Internal Navigation. Serving on the Staff of three Virginia Governors, he was a Member of the State Crime Commission for 12 years, the Election Laws Study Commission, and more than a dozen special "Blue Ribbon" Commission appointments. Senator Warren was chief patron of the legislation and Chairman of the Study Commission that created the School of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech. He introduced legislation that designated Natural Tunnel a Virginia State Park, and that created the Bristol-Washington County Industrial Park., to the citizens of Bristol, Southwest Virginia meanwhile served for eight years on the Virginia State Council for Higher Education., On August 1, 2002, the Governor of Virginia appointed Mr. Warren as Pro Tempore Judge of the General District Court of the Twenty-Eighth Judicial District for the Counties of Smyth, Washington, and the City of Bristol. He was 80 years old when he left the Bench in January 2003., In addition to his wife, Musser W. Warren, he is survived by two sons, George M. Warren III and wife, Margaret, of Little River, S.C., and James Watkins Warren, of Bristol, Va.; a daughter, Merle Warren Dickert and husband, Robert, of Bristol, Va.; grandsons, George Mason Dickert, Robert William Dickert, and John Warren Dickert; and niece, Janet Gemmell Kell, of Richmond., will be held at the Warren family grave site, Emory, Va., The family suggests that those who wish might make a memorial gift to a charity of their choosing., Make a memorial contribution
