ADAMS, Betty Lois, 77, of Petersburg, died on Thursday, February 19, 2009. She was a member of West End Baptist Church and a retired school teacher. She is survived by her husband, Rev. LeRoy Adams; children, Sheila A. Horton and husband, Lanny, of Culpeper, Va., and Michael L. Adams and wife, Terry, of Budapest, Hungary; grandchildren, Rebecca Clayson and husband, Nick, Robert Adams, and Alexander Adams; brother, Rev. Charles W. Arrowood and wife, Betty, of Charlotte, N.C.; and sister, Susia Weaver of Gastonia, N.C. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2009, at West End Baptist Church. Arnold, Randall Gene "Butch"

Randall Gene "Butch" Arnold, 63, of Mount Airy, and husband of Susan Thacker Arnold, died Sunday, Feb. 15, 2009, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem. He was born in Smyth County, July 13, 1945, to the late Joseph Bruce and Virginia Taylor Arnold. He was a graduate of Marion High School and Marion Junior College. He received his undergraduate degree from Appalachian State University and his Masters of Education from North Carolina A&T University. He was an educator for 35 years in the Davidson County School System, where he was a teacher, assistant principal, and principal at Tyro Middle School. He then worked until retirement at the Davidson County School System Administrative Office where he was director of purchasing and business operations and later became executive director of fiscal affairs. He was a member of Salem United Methodist Church, where he was church treasurer, Men's Group treasurer and trustee. Surviving are his wife, Susan Thacker Arnold of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer (J.J.) and Jason Yarbrough of Lexington, N.C.; three grandchildren, Alex, Ethan, and Seth Yarbrough; mother-in-law, Nancy Jane Thacker of Mount Airy; children by marriage, Sarah Qualkenbush of Mocksville, N.C., and Elizabeth Norris and her spouse, Brian, of Lexington, N.C.; grandchildren by marriage, Madison and Jacob Qualkenbush and Lydia Norris; four sisters, Mickey Arnold of Advance, N.C.; Anne Arnold of Atkins, Judy Dishner of Marion, and Janice Martin and her spouse, Bob, of Atkins; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Joseph Donald Arnold, one sister-in-law, Betty Arnold, and one niece, Kelly Martin Calahan. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 18, at 2 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church with the service conducted by the Rev. Bud Cameron and the Rev. J. Dwight Cartner with burial to follow in the Oakdale Cemetery. Ms. Cindy Marie Baldwin, age 39 of the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff, Va., formerly of Roanoke, Va., passed away Sat., Feb. 14, 2009 in a Bristol, Tenn. hospital following a brief illness. She was born in Richlands, Va., and was the daughter of Joe and Dorothy Colley Baldwin of the Baptist Valley section of Cedar Bluff, Va. She had made her home in the Cedar Bluff and Roanoke area most of her life and had worked for the Salem VA Credit Union in Salem, Va. She was a Richlands High School Class of 1987 graduate. She was preceded in death by maternal grandparents, Floyd and Grace Colley; and paternal grandparents, Leck and Edna Baldwin. Survivors, in addition to her parents, are: one brother: Floyd "Bobby" Baldwin of Glen Burnie, Md.; beloved cat: Munchie; special care givers: Staff of the Total Home Care Hospice including Tammy, Missy, Rhonda, Christine, and Brenda; and several uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends. Shortt Barnett Eva "Merl" Shortt Barnett, age 72 of Paducah, Ky., formerly of Tazewell, Va., passed away Sat., Feb. 14, 2009. Born Feb. 8, 1937 in Buchanan County, Va., she was the daughter of the late Luther Shortt and Margarett Shortt Lowe. She was a retired employee of Tazewell Community Hospital. She enjoyed spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Billy Joe Barrett; her second husband, Tommy Barnett; one brother, Hobert Shortt; and one sister, Louise Carter. Deaconess Corine Beasley of 23718 Old Vaughan Road, Dinwiddie, departed this life early Wednesday morning, Feb. 18, 2009 at her residence. She was a native of Dinwiddie County and the daughter of the late Joseph and Susie Coleman. She joined the Gravel Run Baptist Church at an early age and served many years on the usher board. She continued to serve as an active member of the Deaconess and Missionary ministries. She also served on the Hospitality Committee. She was the mother of the church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Deacon Leroy Beasley; sons, Freddie Beasley, Charlie Beasley, David Beasley; and daughter, Sylvia Collier. She leaves to cherish her memory: six daughters, Ruth Thomas, Sarah Tucker (Thomas), Faye Pride (Winfred), Mary Wynn (Broadus), Eva Parham (Stanley) and Janette Jones (Overton); four sons, Joseph Beasley (Dorothy), Rossy Beasley (Willianna), William Beasley (Carlean), and James Beasley (Linda), all of Dinwiddie; two daughters-in-law, Shirley Beasley of Petersburg, Va., and Louise Owens of Dinwiddie; one brother, Earl Coleman of Syracuse, N.Y.; four sisters, Addie Simon of Los Angeles, Calif., Ann Hurst (Walter) of Philadelphia, Pa., Mabel Chapman of Syracuse, N.Y., and Mamie Wyatt of Charlottesville, Va.; one brother-in-law, Garland Myrick (Bernice) of Petersburg; and one sister-in-law, Sallie Myrick of Prince George, Va.; 41 granchildren; numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends, including cherished Pastor and First Lady, The Revs. Larry and Cynthia Brown, and the entire Deaconess Ministry of Gravel Run Baptist Church, among them one special and devoted, Lillie Jones. Beasley Sr., Boyd M.

Mr. Boyd M. Beasley Sr., 69, died suddenly on Thursday, February 12, 2009. Services were held at Vaughn-GuynnMcGrady Funeral home in Hillsville, Va. Boyd was laid to rest in the Thomas A. Beasley Cemetery. Son of the late Darcy and Sylvia Beasley, Boyd was born in Welch, W.Va. but lived most of his life in Virginia. He was raised on the family farm in Hillsville, Va., and after graduation from high school, Boyd headed off to the Army and then to King College to pursue an undergraduate degree. In 1964, Boyd married Gail Young Funderburk. They had three wonderful children, two daughters, Lauren and Darcy, and one son, Boyd Jr. After starting his career in banking, Boyd earned a Master's degree in Banking from LSU. Working for nearly 40 years in the banking industry, Boyd and his family lived in Washington and Winston Salem, N.C. and Richlands and Waynesboro, Va. During his time in Waynesboro, Boyd was a charter member of the Fall Foliage Festival Board of Directors. After retiring from the banking world, Mr. Beasley and Gail moved, in 2006, from Waynesboro to Winterville, N.C. to be nearer to family. He was as comfortable working outdoors as he had been working in a boardroom. Whether it was antiquing, golfing or playing poker, Boyd was most at home spending time with family and friends. He enjoyed sharing stories of his adventures over a cup of coffee with an old friend or with a stranger he had just met. Most of all, Boyd enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and filling their heads with laughter and song. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Gail Funderburk Beasley, of Winterville, N.C.; daughter, Lauren B. Cooper and husband, Rodney, of St. Augustine, Fla.; son, Boyd M. Beasley Jr. and his fiance, Charlene Felstead, of San Francisco, Calif.; daughter, Darcy B. Adee and husband, Kevin, of Winterville, N.C.; grandchildren, Ariel and Hayley Cooper, Drake and Blaire Adee, stepgrandson, Jacob Adee; sisters, Thelma B. Blevins, Stella Irene "Sue"

Stella "Sue" Irene Blevins, 85, of Palatka, died Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009 at Palatka Health Care Center following an extended illness. Born May 14, 1923 in White Top, she had been a resident of Palatka since 1976 coming from Marion. She was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Palatka. She was one of the greatest prayer warriors who ever lived. It was as if she had a direct line to heaven. If you asked her to pray for you, you could consider it done. She was an avid gardener with a green thumb "clean up to her elbow." She was an amazing woman, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Preceding her in death are her husband, Jacob Astor Blevins, a son, Teddy Charles Blevins, her parents, Dewey and Mary Blevins, numerous brothers and sisters, and a grandson, Jacob G. Blevins. Survivors include her five sons, Jackie Blevins Sr. of Keystone Heights, Astor "Noonie" Blevins and wife, Freda, of Saltville, Steve Blevins and wife, Sue, of Abingdon, Scotty Blevins and wife, Kim, of Chilhowie, and Jackie Blevins Jr. of Palatka; two daughters, Linda Freese and husband, Philip, of East Palatka and Tina O'Neal and husband, Jerry, of Palatka; two sisters, Ann Edwards of White Top, and Margaret Burchem of Woodlawn; 17 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Richard L. Bock, 64, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2009 at his home in Chilhowie. After an accident in 2004, he was left a quadriplegic; however, his spirit was never broken. He fought a courageous and optimistic fight to live that inspired and touched many lives. He will be forever missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Adolphus Briggs Sr.; and stepson, Anthony Sanford Briggs. She is survived by her three children, Edwin Gerald Briggs, Lillian Rebecca Briggs and Marella Mac Briggs; two stepsons, William Adolphus Briggs Jr. and Henry Harrison Briggs; 19 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren. employee. He was a dedicated member of Sawyers Creek Baptist Church where he was a former deacon. He was an avid gardener and always enjoyed sharing his bounty with others. Mr. Brinkley was known for his delicious homemade pickles he made every summer. He loved people, never met a stranger and kept a smile on his face up until the bitter end of his battle with cancer. His family and friends were his true joy and happiness. Our sincere thanks to Dr. Paul Conkling of Virginia Oncology and the oncology nurses and staff that rendered excellent care and compassion during the past several months. Butler Jr., Howard Washington

BUTLER, Howard Washington Jr., passed away February 20, 2009. He is survived by his loving wife, Agnes Butler; daughter, Robin Butler; granddaughter, Ashley Boice; brother, Ed Butler; sister, Betty Butler; and many nieces and nephews. Howard served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1943 to 1946, where he taught nighttime navigation by the stars while he was stationed in White Sands, New Mexico. He was a graduate of the University of Richmond School of Business. His career started at the Southern States Cooperative in the mail room, where he met the love of his life. With his hard work and dedication, he eventually became the vice president of human resources and retired in 1986. Howard's hobby was handmaking grandfather clocks, eventually making 28 of them. The family will receive friends at Bliley's-Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., on Sunday, February 22, from 4 to 7 p.m., and where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, with entombment to follow in Signal Hill Memorial Park.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Peggy Shupe Cave; his three children, Cynthia Louise Cave of Suffolk, Va., Charles Mark Cave and wife, Patricia Gail Yeatts Cave of Farmville and Kimberly Virginia Cave of Richmond; his grandchildren, Michelle Nicole Cave of Williamsburg, Sarah Elizabeth Cave and Charlotte Marian Dalton Cave of Farmville. Mr. Cave attended University of Richmond. He was signed to play professional baseball by the Boston Braves and played in their minor league clubs for 10 years. Since coming to Farmville in 1959, he has been an active member of Farmville Baptist Church. He enjoyed his activities with the Prince Edward County Ruritan Club. His hobbies included hunting and fishing. He was employed with Johns Equipment Co. later known as Mid-Atlantic Irrigation Company. A funeral service will be held Sunday, February 22, 2009, 4 p.m. at Farmville Baptist Church with interment in Westview Cemetery. CHATHAM, RONALD DUANE, 57, of Williamsburg, Va., formerly of Richmond, Va., passed away February 14, 2009. He was preceded in death by his mother, Iona M. Chatham. He is survived by his father, Herbert L. Chatham; brother, Gary L. Chatham and his wife, Joyce; nephew and niece, Matthew and Michelle Chatham; sister, Linda Chatham, all of Richmond, Va.; and his chocolate lab, Buddy. Ron served his country in the U.S. Coast Guard during the Vietnam War. He was retired from Anheuser Busch in Williamsburg after 24 years of service. He was a member of the IBT Union, Local 95. Ron was a mason at St. John Masonic Lodge No. 36, a member of Richmond Magic Club and the International Chess Federation. Blues music and art were his passions. Couch; two brothers, Coy Monahan and Jimmy Monahan; and two sisters, Kathryn Alley and Doris Stoneman. He is also survived by five nephews and three nieces. A World War II veteran, Mr. Falconer retired from Markel Insurance Company after 37 years and operated his own insurance business for several years. He was a charter and active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a member of Richmond on the James Sertoma Club, and was a former District Governor of that organization. Mr. Falconer also served as a state and national officer of the Travelers Protective Association. Elbert P. "Griff" Griffith, 72, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009 at Smyth County Community Hospital. He was born May 8, 1936 in Grayson County. He was the son of the late Robert Winfield Griffith and Pansy Ozella Hurt Griffith Phipps. He was retired from the U.S. Army with service in the 82nd Airborne Division and the 5th Special Forces Group Airborne and served five tours in the Vietnam conflict. After retirement from the Army, he worked as a deputy sheriff with the Smyth County Sheriff's Department and as a corrections officer with Marion Correctional Treatment Center in Marion. He was a member of the Chilhowie Masonic Lodge No. 250, Kazim Shriners, and a 32 Degree Scottish Rite, SJ. He was also a member of the DAV, VFW, and a steadfast Democrat. He was a member of the Brookside Baptist Church, Sugar Grove. He enjoyed gardening and sharing the fruits of his harvest with others. He is preceded in death by five brothers, Robert Winfield Griffith Jr., Samuel Terry Griffith, Garnett Howard Griffith, Theodore Eugene Hurt, and Bobby Lawrence Griffith. Betty J. Hendricks VIRGINIA BEACH - Betty J. Hendricks, 75, passed away Feb. 19, 2009, in Parsons Residence Care Center in Chesapeake. Betty was a lifelong resident of the Tidewater area and had lived in Norfolk and Virginia Beach. She was a retired homemaker who also spent years working in legal offices in this area. She was also a tireless volunteer who devoted a large portion of her time to various organizations with special emphasis on St. Jude's Research Hospital. Betty is survived by four daughters: Patricia Wallace and husband Kevin of Virginia Beach and daughter Jennifer of London, England, Cheryl Hugo of Virginia Beach and children Brittany and Blake and grandson Brayden, Karen R. Smith and husband Tommy of Chesapeake and son Timmy and Billie Rabel of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and children John Jr. and Ronnie of Chesapeake. Also surviving is one sister, Dorothy Fitchett of Norfolk. She is also survived by her former husband, William L. Hendricks of Virginia Beach and her special friends, Delores Ash of Virginia Beach and Ken Moore of Suffolk. Betty also leaves many grieving friends including her "adopted family," The Moores. Betty had many associations that were very dear to her. In early life she was a Girl Scout and later became the first Head Drum Majorette of the Norview High School Marching Band. Other groups included her sorority, Epsilon Sigma Alpha of which she was a lifetime member and through this group her association with St. Jude's became a lifetime journey. Along the way she found time to serve years as a volunteer for Sentara Leigh in the gift shop, spend more than 35 years with a group of devoted friends in a bridge club, have a short run with another group in a poker club and still have the time and energy to participate with the Kempsville Greens Ladies Golf Association and the traveling golf group known as the F.R.O.G.s. The family expresses their thanks to Dr. Fenderson and his staff, the 5th. floor South nurses at Maryview for their kindness during her stay there, the Bon Secour Hospice Group, especially Wanda and Felisha, for the care they provided Betty and to the Parsons Residence Care staff for their care and compassion during her final days. She was a longtime resident of Richmond, retired to Florida for 20 years before moving back to The Hermitage at Cedarfield in Richmond for the last 12 years. She was a beautiful, elegant lady who never had enough friends. Her grandchildren and family were the real joy of her many years. JENKINS, The Rev. Dr. Thomas Lee, of Rockwall, Texas, passed away on February 19, 2009, after a two- year battle with ALS. Despite the difficulties caused by ALS, he remained faithful to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was born on September 23, 1957 in Richmond, Virginia. Tom was a 1976 graduate from Richmond Public School System. He attended Montreat Anderson University in Black Mountain, N.C. Tom received his Bachelor's Degree from Taylor University in Upland, Indiana, his Master's at Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, and his Doctorate from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin, Texas. He was a "mathematician and theologian." He taught at Mount Vernon Christian Academy in Atlanta, Georgia, South Oak Cliff High School and Kaufman High School. Tom was pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Haynesville, La., First Presbyterian Church of Terrell, Texas, and First Presbyterian Church of Kaufman, Texas. Tom has written a book "Rediscovering the Trinity in the Local Congregation" that was published in 2008. He is survived by his wife, Caroline Dennehy Jenkins of Rockwall, Texas; children, Heather Nicole Jenkins, Thomas L. Jenkins II and Jennifer Lauren Jenkins, all of Terrell, Texas; mother, Sally Harman Peters and husband, Dr. Philip, of Richmond, Va.; father, Marshall Irvin Jenkins and wife, Dorothy, of Richmond, Va.; brother, Scott Jenkins and wife, Teresa, of Richmond, Va.; loving caregiver, Audrey Tucker; other relatives and a host of friends. KELLY, Ms. Kathie, of Richmond, passed away Monday, February 16, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital, Richmond, after a protracted battle with cancer. She was a native of Virginia and a local resident for 16 years. Ms. Kelly was employed by Computer Services Corporation as the Network Security Administrator. She was previously employed by Media General, Inc., Capital One, and taught at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business. Kathie was a veteran of United States Air Force and a member of the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. She was an avid member of the Adventure Club of Virginia and was a world traveler. She would do Christmas newsletters with accounts of the past year's travels that read like they were written by Lowell Thomas. She was divorced and had no children. Ms. Kelly is survived by her brothers, Kevin, Stephen and Shawn Kelly of Mechanicsville, Va., Robert Kelly of Lakeland, Florida; two nieces, two nephews, two ferrets, two cats and many dear neighbors and friends. She chose cremation of her remains. KINDERVATER, Robert A. Sr. "Bob," of Richmond, died February 17, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mae Kindervater. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Nancy; his children, Robert Andrew Kindervater Jr. and his wife, Susan and Gayle Parrish and her husband, Brian; his grandchildren, Michael and Megan Parrish and Ashley Kindervater; his twin brother, William E. Kindervater and his wife, Linda; his sister, Helen Roberts; his aunt, Irene Matthews; and nieces and nephews. Bob proudly served in the United States Army 529th Military Police Company in Heidelberg, Germany and the 529th Honor Guard and, for the last several years, enjoyed yearly reunions with his army buddies. He was a brick mason and a carpenter, retiring in 2002. Both before and after retirement, Bob was an avid sportsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing with family and friends, and for many years operated his own taxidermy business. Bob was a true teacher, who loved to share his knowledge of his many trades and hobbies with all who came into contact with him. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was very active with The Tuckahoe Square Dance Club, where he and Nancy danced with their many close friends for a number of years. A memorial service with full military honors will be held Monday, February 23, 2009 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 903 Forest Avenue, at 1 p.m., with a reception immediately following the service. Lisa Davis "Pooh" Long, 50, of Leonardtown, Md., and formerly of Marion died Feb. 9, 2009 in Georgetown University Hospital. Born March 7, 1958 she was the daughter of Maxine Elledge Davis of Marion and the late Billy Russell Davis. She was the loving wife of Thomas Richard "Ricky" Long, whom she married on Sept. 26, 1997 in King George. She graduated from Spotsylvania High School "Class of 1976" and was a deputy clerk for the Clerk of Circuit Court, Leonardtown, Md., for 15 years. She was a NASCAR and Redskins fan who loved her cats, gardening and eating crabs. The family received friends on Friday, Feb. 13, from 5 until 8 p.m. in the Mattingley-Gardiner Funeral Home, 41590 Fenwick Street, Leonardtown, Md. 20650, where prayers were said at 7 p.m. Survivors include her brothers, Gene Carlton Davis and his wife, Carol, of Heathsville and Philip Giles Davis and his wife, Becky, of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. She was born in Russell County, Va., and was the daughter of the late Adolphus and Mary Ball Dye. She was a loving mother, sister, and grandmother. She had spent her life caring for her family and her loving prayers brought a lot of them through this life. She is loved by many and will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a lifetime resident of the area. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Leonard A. Lowe; a daughter, Brenda Sue Lowe; a son, Carl Lowe; one sister and five brothers. Francis X. McArdle KILL DEVIL HILLS - Francis X. McArdle, 85, died of heart failure Feb. 17, 2009, in his North Carolina home. Mr. McArdle was born Aug. 22, 1923, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to James and Lillian McArdle. He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Francis was employed with American Can Company as a financial analyst for 40 years. He and his deceased wife Audrey retired in 1983 to their Outer Banks home. Known as "Bud," he was married to Audrey for more than 57 years. He was active in Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Parish. Surviving are his four sons: Kevin, Danny, Richard and Jamie and his seven grandchildren. William Andrew McGee, 82, Kingsport, died on Wed., Feb. 11, 2009 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. Born in Richlands, Va., he was the son of the late William Hurley McGee and Gertrude Foster McGee. Bill graduated from Richlands High School, Emory & Henry College, and did graduate work at the University of Pittsburgh, Pa. He was also a veteran of World War II. Bill was a teacher at Richlands High School for two years before coming to Kingsport to work and retire from Tennessee Eastman Company. He was a member of First Broad Street United Methodist Church and the Crusade Class. Surviving are his wife, Lorraine Compton McGee; sister-in-law, Peggy Compton of Richlands; niece, Debra Ball and husband Bill and great-nephew, Timothy Ball of Holly Springs, N.C.; niece, Tracie Deel and great-niece, Emalee of Henderson, Ky. Phyllis Ann McGhee, 67, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009 at her home in Chilhowie. She was born in Smyth County to the late William and Valley Parker Gillespie and was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Wayne McGhee, her brothers and sisters, Olivene Haulsee and husband, Bill, Harold "Jake" Gillespie and Mildred Gray Jones and husband, Junior. She was retired from the Southwestern State Hospital with over 20 years of service and attended the First Church of God in Chilhowie. She was a kind Christian lady who was always available for family and friends. She was a very loving mother and grandmother. Survivors include one son, Darrell McGhee of Chilhowie; one daughter and son-in-law, Vicki McGhee Herndon and husband, John, of Rosedale; very special granddaughter, Gabriel Herndon; sister, Lois Williams of Marion; several nieces and nephews. . Mrs. Rose's agricultural youth led him to his gardening activities during his retirement. He truly loved working in the field and sharing the fruits of his labor with others. He cultivated and distributed a variety of fresh vegetables, but was most proud of his "collard patch" through which he acquired many new friends and acquaintances. Feb 20, 2009 Tommie Joe "Bud" Stegall Jr., 83, formerly of Highland Street, Martinsville, died Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009, at Blue Ridge Rehab Center in Martinsville. He was born in Axton on Aug. 31, 1925, to Tommie Joe Stegall Sr. and Annie Wade Stegall. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Koger "Polly" Stegall; a daughter, Regina Stegall Routten; a son, Timothy Allen Stegall; and two sisters, Margaret Manning and Sally Ireson. For almost 40 years, Stegall lived in Newport News, where he retired from the Tarmac Corp. as a crane operator and was a member of Denbigh Baptist Church. He attended Beckham United Methodist Church in Axton. Surviving are three sisters, Jessie Maxie of Martinsville, Mary Kelley of Colorado and Dorothy Hairfield of Axton; a brother, Bill Stegall of Ridgeway; and two grandchildren. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Martinsville with Dr. Donald Rhoton officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. Walton Jr., Wyatt Henry

Wyatt Henry Walton Jr., 83, of Huddleston, Va., died on Thursday, February 19, 2009, from complications of Alzheimer's disease. He was born September 15, 1925, the son of the late Wyatt Henry Walton and Cora Woodford Walton, and he lived his entire life on the family farm in Huddleston., He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Margaret Saunders Walton; and their three children, Leigh Walton, of Nashville, Tenn., Susan Walton Wynkoop and her husband, Morgan, of Westport, Conn., and Wyatt Henry Walton III, and his wife, Janet, of Huddleston. He left six devoted grandchildren, Grace, Henry IV, and Tyler Walton, Margaret and Will Knowles, and Katherine Wynkoop., . He attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 1948 he married Margaret on August 28th, a date that still remains the hottest August 28th on record in Bedford. Upon his return to Virginia Tech, Henry continued his pursuit of an engineering degree graduating in 1949. At Tech he won the Intramural championship his junior year and remained a true Hokie fan throughout his entire life. He attended his 60th "Old Guard" reunion in 2006 in Blacksburg., After college, Henry and Margaret returned to Huddleston and soon took over the country store and farm operated by his parents. He raised Hereford cattle and ran Walton's store and Southside Service Center. Henry served on the Dominion Bank Board and was on the Bedford Federal Board for over 40 years. As a community leader, Henry was very involved in lobbying the Virginia Legislature for approval of the construction of Smith Mountain Lake and was instrumental in the efforts of locating the Smith Mountain Lake State Park in Bedford County., A life long Democrat, Henry entered politics in 1963 winning a seat on the Board of Supervisors where he served two terms. He was a staunch leader during the difficult times of the integration of the local public school system that occurred during the time he was serving on the board. Henry served as the Chairman of the Bedford County Democratic Committee for many years and was active in local, state, and national politics his entire life., In 1969, Henry became a realtor with Scott & Bond, Inc. where he specialized in commercial and residential real estate and was a real estate appraiser for over 30 years. He served as Chairman of the Bedford Chamber of Commerce for two years during which time the current Chamber of Commerce office was built. He was on the original Board of Directors of the Bedford County Memorial Hospital during the time of its construction and opening. He chaired the American Red Cross campaign, and served on the American Heart Association Board, the Huddleston Life Saving Board, the Bedford County Vocational Education Foundation, he served two terms on the Central Virginia Community College Board, and was a charter member of the Historic Avenel Board., ., Henry attended Bethesda United Methodist Church since he was born and served in every capacity and was a member of the choir for over 50 years., In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the Bethesda United Methodist Church Building Fund, 14340 Wyatts Way, Huddleston, Va. 24104., A very special thank you to all the wonderful Hospice team and the staff at the Bedford County Nursing Home., s will be held 2 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2009, at Bethesda United Methodist Church, Huddleston, with the Rev.
