Broaddus, T. Nash

BROADDUS, T. Nash, born October 18, 1918, passed away in Irvington, Virginia on February 1, 2009. He lived a life of accom-plishment, in the military, the business community and in philanthropic work. He was a native of Richmond, Virginia and the son of Dr. T. Nash Broaddus and Louise Eubanks Broaddus. He was educated in the Richmond Public Schools where his mother taught and would become the first female principal in the school system. He graduated from the University of Richmond with the class of 1939, just as war clouds were forming over Europe and the Far East, and after working briefly in various businesses, he joined the Navy in 1940. In the Navy he would rise from Seaman Apprentice to the rank of Commander while serving in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. Mr. Broaddus was a "sailor's sailor" with a natural affinity for the sea and ships. The Navy recognized his leadership ability and he rose rapidly through the ranks to become Executive Officer of USS MOONSTONE, a patrol craft assigned to the Panama Canal Defense Force. When Pearl Harbor was attacked on December 7, 1941, MOONSTONE transitioned to wartime footing. The ship immediately began convoy escort duty in the Caribbean. In August of 1942, Lieutenant Broaddus was assigned as Executive Officer of the Submarine Chaser (SC-679), engaged in anti-submarine patrols and convoy duty in the South Atlantic. In the fall of 1943, Lieutenant Broaddus was assigned as Executive Officer of USS CATES, an escort destroyer. In June of 1944, CATES escorted the amphibious ships carrying the first troops to go ashore at Normandy. Lieutenant Broaddus then took command of CATES and became the youngest commanding officer of a commissioned Navy warship at age 25. Upon cessation of hostilities, Lieutenant Commander Broaddus returned to the United States and began a highly successful business career. He was recalled to active duty in 1951, promoted to Commander, and served as Executive Officer of USS CHARLES S. SPERRY until July 1952. Mr. Broaddus began his long business career in 1945 as an innovator and cutting edge leader in the Textiles Fibers Division of the DuPont Company. He left DuPont in December of 1965 to take over as Chief Executive Officer of the textile conglomerate Duplan Corporation, headquartered in New York, and in January 1971, left Duplan to serve as Director of Koracorp Corporation of San Francisco. In 1975 Mr. Broaddus acquired Prodesco Inc., a small textile development company in Perkasie, Penn. Under his direction, Prodesco would become a world leader in the development of highly specialized fabric components for the aerospace and medical device implantation industries. In 1999, he became Chairman Emeritus of Prodesco and its wholly owned subsidiary Secant Medical LLC. This allowed him to devote more of his time as a director of the National Defense University Foundation and subsequently as Chairman of its Board for six years. In recognition of his service to the country and the National Defense University, Mr. Broaddus was awarded the Department of Defense Medal for Distinguished Public Service. Mr Broaddus is survived by his wife Gloria Moncur Broaddus of Irvington, Virginia; his two children Elizabeth Culbertson of Atlanta, Ga. and B. Kirk Broaddus of Austin, Texas; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son T. Nash Broaddus III. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 7 at 12 noon at Historic Christ Church in lrvington, with interment in the church Burying Ground. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Rappahannock Westminster-Canterbury Foundation, Parkinson's Support Group, 132 Lancaster Drive, lrvington, Va. 22480.

Sowers, Helen Hulcher "Nan"

SOWERS, Helen Hulcher "Nan," 90, of Powhatan, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, February 4, 2009 surrounded by her loving family. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 68 years, James R. "Jim" Sowers; and her beloved daughter, Sue Montague. She is survived by her sister, Nancy Williams; four devoted children, Jimmy Sowers (Pinckey), Lu Redfern (Warren), Pat Goodman (Steve) and Billy Sowers (Stephanie); her son-in-law, John Montague (Jean); her 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren, whom she greatly cherished; many nieces, nephews, relatives and wonderful friends. She was a graduate of Cathedral High School, married Jim in 1941 and started a family in 1942, a family she would guide and nurture throughout her wonderful life. She spent many days at the Cherry Grove Beach and Nags Head, where she found great joy being around family and friends. "What Would Nan Do?" was inspiration to all of us. Nan's grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life and will ever be touched and influenced by her countless hours spent with them and her unending love for them. In 1980, she and Jim moved from Stratford Hills to Flatrock, where her door was always open. She was always the genesis for large family gatherings, whatever the occasion may have been. She was an active member of St. John Neumann's Catholic Church and a member of the Powhatan Women's Club. She enjoyed quilting, painting, sewing, traveling and lunch with her friends. Her good humor, giving personality, passion for her family and friends, unique grace, and her strong faith inspired all who knew her. She never complained, rather just moved forward. She has gone to be with her Lord, husband and daughter, where she will continue to watch over and bless us all. She will be sorely missed, but her memory will live forever. A special thanks to her many caregivers, especially Pam, Brittany, Lora, Tyshea and Lou for their loving and gentle care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John Neumann's Catholic Church or Huguenot Blessed Sacrament School. Her remains rest at Bliley's Funeral Home-Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends Friday from 4 to 8 p.m., with a prayer service at 5 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, February 7, at 12 noon at St. John Neumann's Catholic Church. Interment Westhampton Memorial Park.

Spencer, Charles LaFollette

SPENCER, Charles LaFollette, 91, of Richmond, Virginia, died January 31, 2009. He was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, son of the late Warren Russell Spencer and Hallie LaFollette Spencer. After graduating from the University of Arkansas in 1940 with a B.S. in Electrical Engineering, he taught physics, chemistry, and math in the high school at Rodgers, Arkansas. He was inducted into the U.S. Army as a 2nd Lieutenant at Fort Knox, Kentucky, in February 1941, and served in the 701st Tank Destroyer Battalion, seeing combat in North Africa and landing on Anzio, fighting his way up the Italian peninsula to the northern Apennine Mountains. Serving as the Battalion Communications Officer, he received a Bronze Star for heroic service in Italy. He attained the rank of Captain before leaving military service in December of 1945. After his military service, he married Mildred L. Waldrop in Washington, D.C., at the New York Avenue Presbyterian Church, the service presided over by the Reverend Peter Marshall. Living in Northern Virginia, he worked at the Naval Research Laboratory for 15 years as an electrical research scientist, producing seven registered patents and receiving the Distinguished Civilian Service Award as a member of the team producing the Navy's first on-line cryptographic communication system. He was also inducted into the Naval Research Laboratory's Hall of Fame. Entering private industry in 1960, he worked for DECO Electronics in Leesburg, Virginia, until 1969. His work in industry included the first satellite communication system between Hawaii and Washington, D.C.; the SATCOM program; the Through-the-earth communication system; and several classified communication projects for the nation's military. He returned to government service in 1969 at the Defense Communications Agency. As a Branch Chief, he successfully supervised the integration of several military communication systems into a compatible single system. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Newport, Virginia, and spent their winters at Traveler's Rest, an Airstream Park in Dade City, Florida. They participated in Airstream activities in Virginia and in several cross country caravans, including Canada. His favorite saying upon leaving, was the Airstream parting words, "See you down the road," which was probably his final comment to his friends and family. He was preceded in death by his dear wife of 54 years, Mildred, who died in 1999. He was also preceded in death by his younger sister, Margaret Trimble of Little Rock, Arkansas. He is survived by two daughters, Susan Edwards of Asheville, N.C., and Sarah Evans of Midlothian, Va.; a beloved son-in-law, Andrew J. Williams, Andrew Walter "Roscoe"

WILLIAMS, Andrew "Roscoe" Walter, 38, of Chesterfield, died February 2, 2009. Andy was preceded in death by his grandma, Ruth K. Ragland; grandpa, Samuel P. Ragland; and uncle, Samuel R. Ragland. Roscoe is survived by his wife, Lisa; mother and father, Patricia and Wayne Sr; brothers, Wayne Jr. and his wife, Sharon, and Tony and his wife, Suzanne; nieces, Ashley and Bayleigh; and nephew, Michael. He is also survived by his grandparents, Charles and Ray; his aunt, Carolyn; uncle, Keith; and cousins, Emily and Stephen and his wife, Rachael. Roscoe's passions included not only his friends and family, but deer and turkey hunting, playing softball and riding Harleys. As a member of the Wachsmann Hunt Club in Sussex County, he was known as "Bladeslinger," where he brought joy and memories to the club for 26 years. He was as equally dedicated and entertaining to the world of softball in Chesterfield County. Playing for many teams over the years, "Roscoe" left his mark. There were few, if any, who did not know who he was wherever he went. Roscoe always had a smile, a hug, a nickname, or a story for those who crossed his path. Words cannot express the extensive network of friends he had. Everyone had a special place not only in their hearts for Roscoe, but he as equally for them. Roscoe's answer to life was a ride on a motorcycle. He has shared many rides, but his riding family remains to be "The Screaming Brothers." Roscoe's memory will live on, live long, and live strong. We will all miss you brother! His remains rest at the Victory Tabernacle Church of God, 11700 Genito Road, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday and where funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday.
