In 1976 he obtained his real estate license and later his brokers license, managing several firms in Virginia Beach, Higgins, Bay Mark and Apollo before going on to become a licensed real estate appraiser and opening his own firm Dennis Bailey & Associates in Virginia Beach. Mr. Bailey had been a member of the Norview Masonic Lodge 113 in Norfolk for 58 years. He was a member Kilmarnock Baptist Church, the Aeronautical Society, and a licensed pilot since 1947. He was predeceased by his first wife, Sue Margaret Keeter Bailey of Merry Hill, N.C. Surviving are two daughters, Mary Elizabeth Bailey Bright and Winnie Bailey Lewis Huber both of Greenville, N.C.; two sisters, Blanche A. Bailey Cox and Patricia L. Morris F. Bland Jr., "Cubby," of 2017 Walton St., Petersburg, peacefully entered into eternal rest with the Lord on Thursday, July 31, 2009, at McGuire Veterans Hospital, Richmond, Va. He was the son of the late Minnie Diggs and Morris Bland Sr. He was born April 9, 1948, in Dinwiddie, Va., and graduated from the Carver High School, Chester, Va. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Army, where he received the Bronze Star Medal. He retired from Bellwood Defense Logistics. He received numerous awards and recognitions for his years of service. He was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church, Dinwiddie, Va. Morris is survived by a devoted wife of 19 years, Mildred W. Bernard J. Coski Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Bernard Joseph "Ben" Coski Jr., died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, at the age of 80. He was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Linda Willoughby Coski, and by his parents, Bernard Joseph Coski Sr., and Sophia Chmielewski Coski. He is survived by his children, daughters Joannie Elizabeth Moses, Sara Adrienne Birtles (Rupert), and son, John Matthew Coski (Ruth Ann); six grandchildren, Sgt. Daniel Schell (Dawn), Elizabeth Moses, Rebecca Moses, Nicholas Birtles, Timothy Birtles, and Gillian Birtles; one great- granddaughter, Stephanie Schell; his siblings, Richard E. Coski (Evelyn), John W. Cory (Ethel), Jean T. Lach (Frank), and Barbara A. Gasior (David); and by his cherished companion, Mrs. Rosemary Barringer. Born and raised in Cleveland and Euclid, Ohio, Ben graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1952 and returned to teach at the Academy in the early 1960s. He served in the Korean War, was an officer aboard the USS Harwood (DD-681) and several other ships, and was a communications officer in Danang during the Vietnam War. He retired from the U.S. Navy as a commander in 1974. Following his retirement from the Navy, he worked as a detail representative for Block Drug Corporation and managed the downtown Norfolk office of Norstar Brokerage Corporation. He was a scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 412 in the mid-1970s, volunteered at the Church of the Ascension in Virginia Beach, and supported many charitable causes, especially conservation and wildlife foundations. Samuel Wallace Cundiff, 81, of Vinton, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Monday, August 3, 2009. He spent his final days in his home surrounded by family and loved ones. Wallace was born in Huddleston, Virginia on June 20, 1928. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Benjamin Cundiff and Daisy Lemon Thompson Cundiff, and these brothers and sisters: W. E. (Bill) Cundiff, Irvin Cundiff, Troy Cundiff, Maurice Cundiff, Daisy Stevens, Pauline Woodford, Helen Stevens, and Christine Cundiff. Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Dorothy Mae Vawter Cundiff; children, Debbie Cundiff Davis, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., William (Bill) Cundiff and wife, Becky, of Salem, Samuel W. (Sam) Cundiff Jr. and wife, Terri and Marianne Nester and husband, Mike, of Vinton; brother, Jack Cundiff and wife, June, of Bedford; grandchildren, Victoria (Tori) Cundiff, Kirsten Cundiff, Benjamin (Ben) Cundiff, Andrew Cundiff, Hugh Cundiff, and Nicholas (Nick) Nester and Noah Nester., Wallace graduated from the Medical College of Virginia School of Pharmacy in 1953. Wallace served in the US Army Medical Field Service Corp from 1953 through 1955, and served in the National Guard 29th Division from 1946 through 1956. He began his pharmacy career as a partner in White Front Pharmacy before opening Cundiff Drug Store in December, 1959, where he remained active until November, 2008., Wallace was appointed to the Virginia Board of Pharmacy in 1988, serving for nine years, and served as its chairman 1991-1992. Wallace also served on the Roanoke County School Board from 1966 until 1969 during which time both William Byrd High School and Glenvar High School were constructed. He was committed to the development and promotion of Vinton where he served as President of the Vinton Dogwood Festival, President of the Vinton Chamber of Commerce, member of the Advisory Board of the Vinton First Aid Crew, Vinton Downtown Revitalization Steering Committee, and the Vinton Association of Merchants and Professionals. He was honored with the Vinton Most Outstanding Citizen Award in 1968 and the Vinton Father of the Year in 1982., ., Wallace attended Vinton Baptist Church and was a member of the Pete Sink Sunday School Class. Our hearts were saddened by the passing of our loved one, Mrs. Margaret Samantha Jackson, also known as "Sam," of 2123 Walton St., Petersburg, Va., who departed this life on Friday, July 31, 2009. She was the daughter of Mr. Overy L. and Norma Roney of Petersburg, Va. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Noah and Elizabeth Stanback, and an uncle, John E. Stanback. Marvin Norman Lougheed, MD, died peacefully on Tuesday, June 9, 2009, with family at his bedside. He was born on April 18, 1917, in Fairview (formerly Waterhole), Alberta, Canada. He is preceded in death by his parents and four of his brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, V. Carole Lougheed; his children, Melford (Sandra) of Powell River, British Columbia, Ellen, Kendall (Jill Austin), and Donna, MD, all of Ottawa, Ontario, Jill of Montreal, Quebec, and Sean (Kathleen) of Manassas, Va.; and stepchildren, Joyce Thornhill (Joshua Gotbaum), of Washington, D.C., and Hugh Thornhill (Laura), of Roanoke, Va. He is also survived by his former wife, Elsie, of Ottawa, Ontario; brother, Glen of Hillsboro, N.D.; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren., Marvin received his Doctor of Medicine in 1947 from McGill University, followed by residencies in Radiology and Radiation Oncology at the Montreal General Hospital, the Swedish Tumor Institute, Seattle, and McGill University. He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (Canada) and the American College of Radiology. He worked for 20 years for the Montreal General, the Children's Memorial, Jewish General and Notre Dame Hospitals. He was also on the teaching staff of McGill University., In 1971, Marvin moved to Roanoke, Va., where he served as Director of Radiation Oncology at the Cancer Center of Southwest Virginia until his retirement in 1989. In addition to being a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Virginia, he also served as President of the Virginia Chapter, American College of Radiology, and was a member of many other professional organizations in both countries. Throughout the years, he advocated against tobacco abuse through political and organizational activities, especially the ., Marvin held himself to the highest standard of medical practice and helped thousands of patients with complex cancer treatments. He was instrumental in the conception and design of the Cancer Center and the innovative care it brought to patients. He envisioned his every endeavor to be of lasting benefit to future generations whether it be the design of the Cancer Center, or planting trees and laying bricks., Marvin was loved for his quick wit, his enthusiasm for intellectual discourse, and his energetic pursuit of knowledge and understanding. He was loving and generous with his family and many philanthropic organizations. He traveled extensively for both professional education and personal enrichment. He worshiped for 38 years at St. John's Episcopal Church in Roanoke, and served on its Vestry. He was especially interested in the Outreach Financial Support program, and the many people in Roanoke helped by it., The Lougheed family would like to extend their sincere thanks to his personal physicians, and the staff of Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, and The Court at Roanoke for their professional and compassionate care. We are grateful to St. John's Clergy, Lay Eucharistic Ministry and the Pastoral Care Committee for their attention to his spiritual well-being. She was born on April 5, 1925, in Martinsville to Billie Morris Jarrett and Gertrude Craig Jarrett. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Mullins, on Sept. 16, 1989. She was a deputy clerk in the Circuit Court of Henry County before moving to Roanoke in 1948. She was a member of Second Presbyterian Church, where she taught kindergarten in Sunday school for more than 30 years. Surviving are a daughter, Gwen Mullins Hartwell of Largo; and one granddaughter. Evelyn (Jane) Lucas Opengari, 64, of Daleville, departed this life Sunday, August 2, 2009. She was born on February 27, 1945, in Botetourt County, Virginia to Fred and Louise Childs Lucas. Jane graduated from James River High School and was an employee of ITT for over 30 years. She made a commitment to Jesus as a young person at Zion Hill Baptist Church. Jane loved life and was active in many sports and loved animals, including birds. Jane is predeceased by her parents Fred and Louise Childs Lucas and a brother William Lucas. Patricia M. Rutledge VIRGINIA BEACH - Patricia Marie Rutledge, 87, died Aug. 3, 2009 in the home of Barbara and Willard Miller of Chesapeake, after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born in Dublin, Ireland to Catherine Doyle Stronner and John Stronner. After extensive travels with her father, a British army officer, she married Carleton Rutledge Sr. They returned to the United States in the late 1950s and settled in Virginia Beach. She is predeceased by her husband, parents and two sisters Amelia and Charlotte, and a step daughter-in-law, Ann Rutledge. Survivors include a daughter, Susan R. Daniels, and granddaughters Shannon M. Daniels and Erynn N. Daniels of Virginia Beach; stepsons, James T. Rutledge and his wife Louise of The Plains, Va., and Carleton Rutledge of Denver, Colo., as well as numerous step- grandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren. He was appointed chief forest warden and served in that capacity until the consolidation of Newport News and Warwick, receiving commendations from the state forester for his work in forest fire prevention and suppression. He also served as a special police officer in Warwick. He was appointed a justice of the peace in 1958, and when the J.P. system was abolished and the Magistrates system substituted, he was appointed chief magistrate, and served until his retirement. He was a justice of the peace and magistrate for 28 years. He was appointed marriage commissioner in 1974. Having married thousands of couples, he served in that capacity until his passing. He also served as a notary public since 1953. Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman and had a large collection of trophy game fish, birds and animals he had taken in North America. He was an expert rifleman and varmint hunter and had the respect and appreciation of farmers in southeast Virginia for his help in crop damage control by killing groundhogs and other varmints. He was a charter member of the Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fishing Association, Peninsula Sportsmen's Association, North America Hunt Club and a longtime member of Central Hill Hunt Club in Isle of Wight County. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Greig Campbell Sheldon; a daughter, Martha Ann Willis and son-in-law Jimmy Willis of Suffolk; a daughter, Joy Sheldon Gosselin and son Nicholas; and stepgrandchildren, David M. and Jennifer Gosselin of Williamsburg, and daughter- in-law, Cindy Sheldon of Richmond, and grandchildren, Michael and Kelly. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and his many close church friends and neighbors. He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, David J. Gosselin in October of 2007, and his son, William B. Sheldon Jr. in July of 2008. He has been loved and will be missed by his family and friends. Aug 4, 2009 Susan Estelle Odell Bryant of Martinsville died Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. She was born in Rockingham County, N.C., to George T. and Jettie Odell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Curtis O. Bryant; six sisters, Blanche Talbert, Viola Boyte, Cornelia Heffinger, Jettie Odell, Cuma Odell and Gertie Brown; and three brothers, Joe Odell, Elroy Odell and Talmadge Odell. She graduated from Leaksville High School, and in her youth, she was an active member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Eden, N.C., where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. She later performed in a vocal trio with two of her sisters in the Eden area. Since 1939, she had been a member of Christ Episcopal Church in Martinsville, where she taught Sunday school for many years. Surviving are a daughter, Sandy B. Taylor of Roanoke; a son, Curt Bryant of Martinsville; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Christ Episcopal Church in Martinsville with the Rev. Dr. Ellen Hanckel officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Martinsville Chapel of Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. |
Frances G. Tarlton NORFOLK - Frances G. Tarlton, 89, passed away Monday, Aug. 3, 2009 at her home. Born in Wilson, N.C., to the late Frank and Helen Mary Lamm, Frances was the widow of Clayton B. Tarlton. She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Tarlton Meekins and Carolyn McPeek, both of Virginia Beach; a brother, Bob Lamm of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Tammy Clark of New Jersey, Lanny Meekins of Aviana, Italy, Todd and Scott McPeek of Virginia Beach and Kim Fuller of Norfolk; 10 great- grandchildren, Nathen, Ashley, Oland, Lance, Clayton, Brianna, Sierra, Donovan, Haven and Aubrey. She was predeceased by a sister, Helen Clell Kelso and a brother, Gordon Lamm. The family would like to thank Odyssey Hospice and the different caregivers who supported and loved their mother. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Ms. Osie Thomas went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 30, 2009. She was born on May 20, 1941, in Bluefield, W.Va., to Leona and Caldwell Thomas, who preceded her in death. Ms. Osie was a wonderful humanitarian who with style and grace lived a life of service; always willing to go above and beyond to help others. Ms. Osie opened her heart and her home to many in need. To some she was an angel in disguise and to those who did not have family she filled in the gaps. She was an extraordinary mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend and confidant. Her presence will tremendously be missed. She leaves to cherish her loving memories her children, Cynthia Crowell (Windsor), Abigail Thomas (Julius), Joe Lewis Thomas (Shawn), Mildred Thomas, Josie Forde (Glenn), Eddie Thomas, and Teddy Thomas (Doreen), Patricia Wheeler, Larry Edwards, LaVar Thomas, Julius Walton and Jessica Walton; 24 loving grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by one sister, Clarise Harrison. She has a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Because she touched the lives of many she has several extended family members and friends. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, from the Chapel of Tucker's Funeral Home, Petersburg; Pastor Virginia Graham, pastor of God Mission Church, Ettrick, Va., officiating. Leona Whorley Zimmerman, 80, of Vinton, went to be with our Lord on Sunday, August 2, 2009. She was preceded in death by her parents, Aubrey L. and Zula Jones Whorley; two brothers, Lynn and Gerald Whorley; and the father of her children, J. Bryan Zimmerman. She was a member of Lynn Haven Baptist Church for 45 years. She is survived by two sons and their wives, Michael B. and Kathy H. Zimmerman, Donald N. and Karen L. Zimmerman; a daughter and her husband, Lisa Z. and Anthony W.
