Aug 6, 2010 Amanda Dawn Lawson Biggs, 40, of 2220 Irisburg Road, Axton, died Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, at her home after a long battle with brain cancer. She was born Oct. 8, 1969, in Stuart to Trudy Lawson Osborne of Stoneville, N.C., and Michael David Saunders of Gloucester. She was preceded in death by her maternal grandmother, Peggy L. Williams. She had been a flight attendant and was a member of Rich Acres Christian Church. Surviving, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Larry S. Biggs, two sisters, Tammy Lynn Saunders of Stoneville and April Michelle Aaron of Danville; her paternal grandmother and stepgrandfather, Helen and Ross Sanderlin of Gloucester; her stepgrandmother, Nancy Osborne of Martinsville; her stepfather, Michael Osborne of Martinsville; and a number of nieces, nephews and other family members. Her body was donated to Duke University Medical Center for research study. A service will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Rich Acres Christian Church with Minister Tim Hunt officiating. The family will receive friends for an hour before the service at the church Saturday and at other times at the home. A reception will be at the church after the service Saturday. After retirement she and Hugh traveled extensively, never meeting a stranger. She competed in the Senior Olympics (famously placing first in the 100-yard dash at 68 years old) and played tennis until she was 79. She was very active in the Extension Homemakers clubs, in particular the Dare-Crossroads Club, where she made lifelong friends and held most of the elected positions. |

Bill Clinton Garner, 84, of Roanoke, Va., left his worldly home for his heavenly home on Friday, August 6, 2010. He is preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Claudine Garner; daughter, Julie Mallett; mother-in-law, Becka; aunts-in-law, Gussie and Baby; and sister-in-law, Sara Lou. Bill was a very devoted husband and father and is survived by his wife, Barbara Knibb Garner, with whom he had just celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary; daughters, Becky Garner Watts (Blake), Cindi Garner, and Jennifer Wacenske (William); five grandchildren, Josh Mallett, Eric Wacenske (Dea), Emma, Colin, and Julia Watts; former son-in-law, Robert Mallet (Diane). He also leaves two sisters, Jackie Jones and Patricia Wilson. Bill served in the Navy CB's during, and helped build airstrips in the South Pacific so the newspaper headlines could read "the Marines have landed." He was an employee of the Norfolk-Southern Railroad and was recently awarded a diamond pin for 60 years of service in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Bill was a member of the Cave Spring Lions Club serving as president for the year 1995 to 1996. Funeral services will be held 2:30 p.m. on Monday, August 9, 2010, at Oakey's South Chapel with the Rev. Donna Hopkins Britt of Calvary Baptist Church officiating, assisted by Dr. Marvin Barbre of Good Samaritan Hospice. Interment will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. McCOULL, Charles Logan "Chuck" IV, 88, of Colonial Heights, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, after a brief illness. He was predeceased by his parents, Charles L. McCoull III and Carolyn Coates McCoull; wife, Jacquelynne C. McCoull; and brother, Gibson Coates McCoull. He is survived by his children, Renee McCoull, Charles L. "Chip" McCoull V and wife, Janice, and Joseph Thomas Mentzer Jr.; grandchildren, Chad McCoull, Ryan McCoull, T. Channing Mentzer and Christopher S. Mentzer; and a sister-in-law, Elizabeth H. Callahan. Following his graduation from Granby High School, Mr. McCoull served in World War II with fighter squadron VMTB-134 of the United States Marine Corps. After the war he followed his love of theatre and appeared in numerous productions, including many at Swift Creek Mill Playhouse where he worked for over 30 years. Mr. McCoull was a proud member of the Screen Actors Guild as well. He was a retired teacher with Dinwiddie County Schools and a member of St. Michael's Episcopal Church, where he loved singing in the church choir. The family will receive friends Sunday, August 8, 2010, from 4 to 6 p.m, at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home. Clarence Schuylar McClure Sr. "Mac" Clarence Schuylar McClure Sr. "Mac", 76 of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, in Roanoke, Virginia, after a long illness., He was born on April 16, 1934, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was a beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother and son of James and Josephine Mawyer McClure., Dr. McClure served in the United States Army and was stationed in Germany where he met and married the love of his life, Traute H. Goettfert., He attended Bluefield College and transferred to the University of Virginia where he became the first person in his family to graduate from college. He went on to obtain a Master's Degree from University of Virginia and an Ed.D from Nova University. He was a member of the Roanoke Seventh Day Adventist Church. He dedicated his life to the education of children. He worked for over 30 years as a public educator, 27 of those as superintendent of schools in Albemarle and Botetourt Counties. In addition to his commitment to education, he loved children and the promise they hold for our future. He was an educator, lover of music and always willing to help his fellow man., He was preceded in death by his wife, Traute H. James Carlyle (Carl) Jones, 86, of Christiansburg, Va., boarded the gospel flyer on Thursday, August 5, 2010, as it paused briefly on it's heaven bound journey. The conductor, our Lord Jesus Christ, assisted him in starting his homeward bound journey. Carl was born on December 22, 1923, in Albemarle County, Va., to the late James Walter and Maddie Gay Niday Jones. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to the Sinking Creek Valley in Craig County, Va., where he attended Maywood school., Carl began a career at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in 1942, which was interrupted in 1943, when he was drafted to serve in, . He served in the United States Army Air Corp, in the South Pacific until 1945. In 1948 Carl returned to work at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, where he continued working until his retirement in 1986., Carl's loves in life were God, his family, music, traveling, reading, and photography. He enjoyed attending Wesleyan Community Church in Blacksburg, Va., where he often sang and played his favorite instruments, the auto harp and the guitar. He also enjoyed writing songs and poems. He loved people, staying active, and a good joke, even if it was on himself., In addition to his parents, Carl was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Orange Jones; sisters, Mildred Poff, of Christiansburg, Va., and Eileen Buck, of Charlottesville, Va.; and brother, Douglas Jones, of Christiansburg, Va., Surviving are his wife, Hallie M. Jones, of Christiansburg, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce R. and Linda L. Jones, of Riner, Va.; sister, Janice Furrow, of Newport, Va.; granddaughters, Tasha Keller, of Nashville, Tenn., and Leigh Quintana, of Christiansburg, Va.; and great-grandchildren, Xander Keller, Lucia Quintana and Greg Quintana. Luther Lee Keith, 83, of Roanoke, Va., died peacefully on Thursday, August 5, 2010 surrounded by family members. He was born in Botetourt County on Easter Sunday, April 17, 1927. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin Luther and Marcie Lafon Keith; his sister, Cloie Kincer; and infant sister, Helen Keith., Luther was a, Veteran. He served our country as a member of the, , aboard the USS Los Angeles. He was a plank owner of the USS Los Angeles as he was assigned to the ship at the time it was commissioned., In recent years, he participated in reunions with fellow shipmates of the USS Los Angeles Association in various locations across the country. He served as President and was currently serving on the Board of Directors. He was also a lifetime member of, #1264., Luther was a salesperson during his working career. In his retirement years, Luther loved to do handy work, especially remodeling homes for grandchildren. Margaret Goins BRISTOL, Tenn. Margaret Goins, 77, died on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, at Indian Path Hospital in Kingsport. She was a daughter of the late Autry Doak and Margaret McReynolds Doak. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William T. Goins, and two brothers, Elmer Doak and Dr. Lin Doak. She was a graduate of Tennessee High School and Carson-Newman College, where she was a member of the band and the Calliopian Literary Society, and received her master's degree from East Tennessee State University. She was a music and kindergarten teacher in Carter and Sullivan counties for over 30 years and was a teacher in Miss Maude's Kindergarten at Anderson Street United Methodist Church. She was a member of N.E.A., T.E.A., S.C.E.A. and S.C.R.T. and the Democratic Women, Gamma Epsilon chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International, which she served as treasurer for 18 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir, was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women's Missionary Union. Margaret is survived by two daughters, Cathy Goins and Christie Vaughn and her husband, Adam, all of Bristol Tennessee; three sons, Bill Goins and his wife, Dawn, of Bristol Virginia, Donnie Love and his wife, Katie, of Lexington, N.C., and Tommy Goins and his wife, Natasha, of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Audrey Doak of Bristol Tennessee; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Ralph K. Doshier, Sr., 83, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord Thursday, August 5, 2010. He was a United States, veteran in, and retired from State Farm Insurance in Charlottesville. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Gladys Doshier; brother, Norman Doshier; son, David Doshier; first wife, Gertrude "Trudy" Doshier; and granddaughter, Shannon Lawson. Surviving are wife, Virginia Brown Doshier; son and daughter-in-law, Ralph "Butch" Doshier, Jr. and Pamela Doshier of Standardsville, Va.; stepdaughter, Barbara B. Iddings, Roanoke; sister-in-law, Bonnie Doshier of Idlewild, Calif.; numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, great great grandchildren; and beloved, Little Bit. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m., Sunday, August 8, 2010 at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. FORREST, Ruth Jolly, 88, of Richmond, died August 5, 2010. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, Harvey Richard "Dick" Forrest; her parents, Jessie Sutton and Wilton Epes Jolly; and infant sisters, Virginia and Jesse Jolly. She is survived by her sons, Steven Jolly Forrest and his wife, Elizabeth, of Powhatan and Harry Wilton Forrest and his wife, Kathryn, of Richmond; her twin granddaughters, Ruth MacRae Forrest and Sara Epes Forrest of Powhatan; her sisters, Mattie "Molly" Epes Jolly and Janet Jolly Clark of Richmond; and her sister-in-law, Marion Forrest Woolard of Newport News; her niece, Jill Clark Page and her husband, Malcom, their daughters Emily Page and Jessica Gentry and her husband, Joey, all of Richmond. Also surviving are many other beloved nephews, nieces, great- nieces, and many dear and devoted friends. Ruth was born in Kinston, North Carolina, and was raised in South Hill, Virginia. She attended State Teachers College (now Longwood University) and Pan American Business School. She worked for State Planters Bank and Colonial Williamsburg before becoming a mother and homemaker. She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. For many years, Ruth was a volunteer at Meals On Wheels, where she delivered food to homebound and elderly residents of the Richmond area. She was an active member of the United Methodist Family Services Auxiliary for over 25 years. Remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Rd., where family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, August 8, 2010, and where a memorial service will be held Monday, August 9, at 11 a.m. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to Meals On Wheels (mowdelivers.com) or United Methodist Family Services (umfs.org). Wilbert James Carter Jr., of Wrightsville Beach, N.C., and Greensboro, N.C., died on Wednesday, August 4, 2010, at his home on Wrightsville Beach. Jim was born on August 13, 1938, in Greensboro to the late Christine Brooks and Wilbert James Carter. Jim received his education at The Choate School, Wallingford, Conn., and UNC-Chapel Hill where he graduated with a BA in History. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He was employed by JP Stevens, Inc. in Greensboro for several years before joining the, . After employment in Chicago, he settled in Roanoke, Va., with the Norfolk and Western Railway, later the Norfolk Southern. In Roanoke he was a member of the Jaycees and the, . He served on the boards of Mill Mountain Theatre and the Virginia Museum of Transportation. After retiring to Wrightsville Beach, Jim served on the boards of the Wrightsville Beach Museum of History and the Wilmington Railroad Museum. He was an active member of Bill's Club (8). Additionally he served on the board of Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill. He held a lifelong interest in history, travel, environmental issues, the National Railway Historical Society and family philanthropy. Jim is survived by his wife, Polly Potter Carter; his daughter, Mary Elizabeth Carter White and husband, Andrew Nicholas Howard White, of Oxshott, Surrey, England; and two grandchildren, Nicholas James Carter White and Georgia Elizabeth Stevens White. Additional survivors include his sister, Nancy Carter Hoyt and her husband, Ralph Hoyt, of Jacksonville, Fla. Numerous nieces and nephews will always treasure his interest and help in their lives. His sister, Dorothy Carter Price, predeceased him. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 8, 2010, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Andrews Mortuary Market Street Chapel. A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. on Monday, August 9, 2010, at Wrightsville United Methodist Church, 4 Live Oak Dr., Wrightsville Beach, N.C.
