Albert Alexander Chamberlain departed this life on Aug. 10, 2010, at his residence after an extended illness. He was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pa., but had resided in Petersburg, Va., since 1972. He was predeceased by his parents, Clarissa and William Chamberlain., After serving 24 years and attaining the rank of sergeant first class in the United States Army, Albert retired. He then worked for the US Postal Service for 20 years and retired once again. Albert met and married Henrietta Chamberlain in 1952. From this union, they parented five children. He was a devoted family man that constantly talked about his family and his love for them., He leaves to cherish his memory a loving and devoted wife of 58 years, Henrietta Chamberlain; children, Wayne A. Chamberlain Sr. (Janice), Verona M. Chamberlain-Grant, Winona D. Chamberlain, Andrea B. Chamberlain, and Andre B. Chamberlain; eight grandchildren; Carmeneta R. Chamberlain, Wayne A. Chamberlain Jr., Janise L. Jenkins (Charles), Natashia L.K. Chamberlain, Shamond S.J. Chamberlain, Nyguel S. Grant, Nyll L. Grant and Ciani A. Ming; and two great-grandchildren, Tameka and Marissa; one sister-in-law, Emma Washington; and one brother-in-law, Willie G. Mikell; and one devoted aunt, Sarah Cornish; and an extended family of nieces, nephews and friends that will miss him dearly., The family wants to thank the staff of Envoy at Stratford Hills Nursing Home and Crater Community Hospice for the services rendered., The homegoing services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Third Baptist Church, 550 Farmer St., Petersburg, Va., with Pastor Leroy A. Ellie worked in the telecommunications industry for 33 years for Western Electric, AT&T, Lucent Technologies, retiring from O.F.S. in 2005. Eula W. Harrison ELIZABETHTON, Tenn. Eula W. Harrison, 85, died on Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at the Johnson City Medical Center Hospital following a brief illness. She was the daughter of the late Jim and Virgie Davenport White and was born in Greendale, Va. She had lived in Carter County for the past 58 years. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Floyd Harrison; and brother, Fred White. Mrs. Harrison was retired from Univac as an Executive Secretary and was a business partner in several family owned businesses. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed attending the Widows Luncheon Club, telling stories and jokes, collecting and caring for friends as well as shopping and reading. Mrs. Harrison always kept a positive attitude and lifted up her friends even when she was not feeling well. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Dr. David Bashor; one granddaughter, Melissa W. Bashor and Doug Ellington; one great-grandson, Devin Bashor Ellington, all of Charlotte, N.C.; sister, Gladys Snead, Abingdon, Va.; nephews, Sam and his wife, Rebecca Snead, Bristol Virginia; David White and his wife, Cindy, Michael White, all of Portland, Tenn.; great-nephew and great-niece, Samuel and Meghan Snead, both of Bristol Virginia; honorary daughter, Dr. Prathiba Ram; honorary granddaughter, Jennifer Morris; honorary extended family, Ruth Carden, JoAnn Minton, John Fields, Helen Manes, Jan Reagan, Danny Wilkins and many more whom she loved deeply and valued. In our loneliness and struggle to continue our lives without Max, we are humbled by the caring, love and prayers of hundreds of friends who showed so many acts of kindness. The cards with the personal notes of reflections about Max's kindness and politeness have meant so much. Birthday celebrations at Kabuki and Outback were always special. Max and his cousin Stephanie celebrated their 40th birthday in February at Kabuki with friends and family. He had a great sense of humor and loved funny movies. Max was an avid college football fan, VA Tech being his favorite. Max always liked seeing the deer and wild turkey in the big field beside our home. Herman Early Kirby Sr., 81, of Charlottesville, died on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at a local care facility., He was born on September 20, 1928, in Esmont, the son of the late Richard Franklin Kirby and Alma Moore Kirby. He was also preceded in death by his first wife of 29 years, Joyce Ann Kirby; a granddaughter, Kelly Ann Kirby; and a brother, Harold F. Kirby., Mr. Kirby was Superintendant of Facilities Management of Heating and Air at the University of Virginia. He started a Trades Program for University of Virginia Facilities Management. James David (Gomer) Honaker, 62, went to be with his Lord and Savior on August 13, 2010. He was born in Huntington, W.Va. and lived in Williamson, W.Va. until moving to Roanoke in 1965. He served in the US Navy and was honorably discharged in 1971. He was employed in the auto parts business for nearly 40 years and was currently employed with Autopart International. James cherished his time spent with his family and friends. He especially enjoyed yard sales and flea markets. James was preceded in death by his father, Donald A. Honaker and father-in-law, Burks D. Harris. He is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Sharron, Roanoke; son, David Tipton (Tip) Honaker and wife, Angela; grandsons, Zachary Tipton and Zian Burks Honaker, of Salem; mother, Helen Honaker Kitts, Vinton; sister, Kathy Turner and husband, Lonnie; three nephews, Austin, Brandon and Will Turner; and mother-in-law, Elizabeth Harris, all of Roanoke. It was here that they owned and operated the family business, Gardner Iron and Metal, for 57 years., Joyce was an active member in several civic organizations where she enjoyed the longtime friendship of members of the Orange community. Miss Margaret Phyllis Kessinger, 82, of High Point, N.C., died Friday at Pennybyrn at Maryfield. Born June 4, 1928, in Clifton Forge, Va., she is a daughter of the late Samuel K. Kessinger and Ethel Shughrou Kessinger. Miss Kessinger graduated in 1949 from Dunbarton College of the Holy Cross in Washington, D.C. She spent her career as a school teacher and retired from the Fairfax County Public Schools. She was preceded in death by her cousin and lifelong friend, Sally Ann Nelson. ANDERSON, Marguerite Funk, 77, of Powhatan, went to be with her Lord August 14, 2010, at her home surrounded by her loving husband of 57 years, Herbert "Dick" F. Anderson; devoted son, Michael L. Anderson; and close friends. She is also survived by one sister, Barbara Pittman (Roy); many nieces, nephews; devoted friend, Bessy Clay; and special caregiver, Lacy Chambers. She was preceded in death by an infant son, M.L. Anderson. Mrs. Anderson was a retired employee of 35 years of honorable service with DGSC. She was a loving mother and special friend to all. Martha Turner Ingram, 98, of 1356 Knob Church Road, Henry, Va., died Friday August 13, 2010, at Franklin Healthcare Center at Rocky Mount, Va. She was born November 17, 1911 in Franklin County, Virginia to the late Flem Lee Turner and Maggie Jarrett Turner. She was the last surviving child of 12 brothers and sisters and three half brothers and sisters. She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Leonard Ingram, who died February 27, 2002. She also was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Nellie Len Ingram, Carla Jean Ingram, son-in-law, Nelson Stone, daughter-in-law, Barbara Jean (Hardy) Ingram., In her younger days, she worked at Bassett Knitting Corporation. She was a homemaker raising eight children for the remaining days of her life. Her passion was her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She had a passion for her garden and flowers. Mary Holliman, 80, of Blacksburg, Va., born January 28, 1930, passed away on August 13, 2010, in Lewis-Gale Hospital in Salem, Va. from complications of heart disease. She was surrounded by her loving family at the time of her death. She is survived by her son, C. James Holliman, M.D., of Hershey, Pa.; her grandson, Mark Holliman, of Edinburgh, Scotland; her granddaughter, Jennifer Holliman, of Pittsburgh, Pa., and her granddaughter, Maggie Holliman, of Radford, Va.; her grandson, William Holliman, of Radford, Va.; her previous husband, Dr. Rhodes Burns Holliman, of Dublin, Va.; her sister, Ruth Bloom Blankenship, of Lewisburg, Pa., and Ruth's children, Jesse IV, of Texas, Leota Julians, of Florida, and Lynda Barrett, of Pennsylvania, and their 14 children scattered throughout the country; and many loving Lepard and Bloom cousins, as well as numerous other family members., She was preceded in death by her younger son, Daniel R. Holliman, M.D., in 2008., She will be sorely missed but forever remembered for her many achievements and service to family and the community. She was very devoted to her home town of Blacksburg, Va. where she served on the Town Council and Town Planning Commission. She was involved in multiple projects and programs to improve life for others in Blacksburg and in Southwestern Virginia. Mary was an active member of the Blacksburg Ruritan Club and other local civic organizations. She was very devoted to her family and gave fully of herself to aid and support family members., Completely on her own, she founded the book publishing firm of "Pocahontas Press" and published numerous books with an emphasis on books about Southwestern Virginia history and culture. She trained numerous interns and others who worked for Pocahontas Press and many have gone on to successful careers in academics and publishing., Mary was an excellent teacher of English and literature and served as faculty at Radford College, Virginia Tech and Blacksburg High School. She has provided career inspiration for numerous students and fellow faculty., She enjoyed traveling and had notable travel experiences including rafting the Grand Canyon, visiting Russia (for which she developed some language fluency in Russian), visiting France, and most recently participating in the Blacksburg sister city group trips to Nicaragua., Her hobbies included gardening, photography, oil painting and she was an avid reader of novels and history books., A memorial service to honor and celebrate her life and achievements will be held Saturday, September 18, 2010, at 7 p.m. at the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church., In lieu of flowers, donations in her name could be made to The Mary Holliman Memorial Fund of the Sister Cities Project, P.O. Raymond Lamarr (Larry) Amy, of Radford, passed away on his 60th birthday, Friday, August 13, 2010. He was the Environmental Engineer for the City of Radford and was a member of St. Jude's Catholic Church. He was a veteran of the U. S., , having served during the, in the 101st Airbourne, during which time he was awarded a, . Larry was very involved with Special Olympics, Red Cross, Radford/Fairlawn Daily Bread, Radford United Way, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters. He also served on the board of the New River District Community Sentencing Program, was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Building Committee at St. Jude Church, was active as a leader in Boy Scouts, and coached all levels of Rec League sports for the City of Radford. He graduated from Corry Area High School in 1968, St. Johns River College with an A. S. Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, and attended University of North Florida in the Civil Engineering Program. Larry was an avid golfer and enjoyed photography, painting, history and spending time with family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Gloria Amy and his father-in-law, Norman Smith. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Cheryl L. Robert (Bob) Edward Finck, 50, of Salem, Va., in the blink of an eye, left the earth to be with our Great Father in Heaven. Bob was serving Christ on a mission trip to Zambia, Africa and died suddenly in an auto crash on Monday, August 9, 2010. Affectionately known as "The Vortex" by all those who loved him, Bob was preceded in death by his father, Edward John Finck Sr. and beloved grandmother, Fanny M. Hooks. Surviving Bob are his wife, Sandi McDaniel Finck; daughters, Amanda Brittany Finck, Brenna Katelyn Finck; son, Hunter James Leo Finck; mother, Martha Hooks Finck; brother, Edward John Finck Jr.; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins., Bob was an integral part of the family at Fellowship Community Church in Salem, Va. Among the many roles Bob played while he was here were loving son, husband, father, friend, baseball and softball coach, advocate and most importantly servant of our Awesome God. Bob was born on September 18, 1959, at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. He grew up in Woodbridge, Va., graduating from Woodbridge Senior High School; he then proudly served in the United States Air Force for six years. He also resided in Fredericksburg, Virginia, where he and his family were members of Salem Baptist Church. Bob loved hunting, golfing and being with his family and friends. He loved his Lord and Savior most of all. He retired from the Burlington Northern Railroad after 44 years of service, having worked his way from laborer at the age of 16 to the position of Material Manager, a testament to his fair nature, people skills, and work ethic. Bob's faith and his family were the two single most important things in his life. He was always happiest spending time with his family, though he also followed baseball closely, enjoyed a good game of golf, and maintained a 180-plus bowling average into his late 60's. All who knew him experienced the tremendous grace and dignity with which he approached the debilitations of macular degeneration, Parkinson's disease, and COPD in his later years. He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Jaclyn; a son, Sean McGinnis and wife, Amy; a daughter, Shannon Wilson and husband, Daniel; grandchildren, Megan and Kira McGinnis, Brent and Brandon Prather, and Danielle Wilson; four brothers, Joseph (Jackie), Dennis (Kathy), John, Tim; and sisters, Katherine Hunziker (Dan) and Catherine Prescott (Jim); and a special sister-in-law, Elizabeth Nicolin. Dr. Robert John Hehre, of Daleville, Virginia, formerly of Lexington, Virginia, died on Tuesday, August 10, 2010, the husband of Ann Parsons Hehre. He was born in East Orange, New Jersey on February 15, 1927, the son of Frederick William Hehre and Florence F. (Feickert) Hehre. He grew up in Arlington, New Jersey and attended the Kearny, New Jersey public schools. He received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Columbia University, and Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Business Administration degree from Indiana University. He was a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Indiana. Dr. Hehre worked for the public accounting firms of Peat, Marwick & Co. in New York and Cooley & Marvin in Boston, The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston in Boston, Massachusetts. He taught Finance and Accounting at Northeastern University in Boston for 25 years and for seven years at Bryant College in Smithfield, Rhode Island where he was Chairman of the Accounting Department and Dean of the Graduate School. He served in the United States Air Force during the, as Fiscal Officer of Headquarters Command in Washington, D.C., and was honorably discharged in June of 1954. He was a long-time member of the Episcopal Church serving as Treasurer, Chalicist and Lay Reader of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Wellesley, Massachusetts; later in Lexington as Treasurer of the R. E. Lee Memorial Church, Chalicist and Lay Reader. He was a member of the Stonewall Jackson Hospital Auxiliary, The Rockbridge Area Civil War Round Table, the Lexington Kiwanis, and the Lexington Historical Society. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and held memberships in the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, The Indiana Society of Certified Public Accountants, and the American Accounting Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two children, Joanne Hehre Brothers, of Richmond, Virginia, and John Carl Hehre, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and six grandchildren. GILMAN, Roberta Weldon, of Ashland, Va., died on August 13, 2010 in the home where she was born 92 years ago. She was a 46-year employee at Hanover National Bank, later First Virginia and BB&T. She was predeceased by her parents, William E. and Sallie Parke Gilman; and brothers, Hansford Gray Gilman, William Ellett Gilman and Thomas Edward Gilman; and sister, Alma Earle Gilman Tucker. She is survived by her nephew, Floyd Woodruff Tucker IV; nieces, Donna Gilman Dennehy and Sharon Gray Ciferri. She is also survived by great-nephews, Joseph Campbell Tucker, William Alexander Tucker, Michael Gilman Dennehy; great-nieces, Karen Dennehy Godsey and Kristin Ciferri; and close friend and cousin, Beverly Proffitt. Visitation will be at the Tucker home at 718 South Center Street, Ashland, Va., Sunday, August 15 from 4 to 8 p.m. Services will be held at Ashland Christian Church, where she was a lifelong member, on Monday, August 16 at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at the Gilman Family Cemetery at Hilly Home. Sarah Hutton "Sally" Blanton BRISTOL, Tenn. Sarah Kendall Hutton "Sally" Blanton died on Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at the Wellmont Hospice House. She was born on Saturday, April 24, 1937, in Wilmington, Delaware to the late Col. Hamilton Morris Hutton and Mary Tudor Jones Hutton. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Frank S. Blanton Jr.; son, Dr. Robert H. Blanton and wife Alice; two daughters, Rives B. Deaton and husband Eric, and Dr. Sarah R. Blanton; two grandchildren, Laura E. Blanton and Robert H. Blanton Jr. She was a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Nursing and a member of the nursing staff at the UVA hospital. Sally was active in community life. She was one of the founders of the Bristol Crisis Center where she served as President of its Board of Directors and was a principal fund raiser and crisis counselor. She was a member of Central Presbyterian Church where she headed a Bereavement Committee, a member of the Border Guild/Junior League and the Blue Stocking Club. In 1998, when she was a four year cancer survivor, she was named honorary chairman of the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. She was a board member of the United Way, where she served as director of the professional division and on the evaluation committee. She was a Cub Scout den mother and avid supporter of AAU swimming. Her last passion was the development of a Hospice program in Bristol, culminating in the building of the Wellmont Hospice House, where she was a regular volunteer and a staunch and vigorous advocate. Sally was a "people person." She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be sorely missed. She genuinely loved people and, they sensed this, confiding easily and loving her in return. Her friends knew her as always open, honest and discreet, with a sincere and compassionate heart. The funeral service will be conducted at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, Aug. 15, 2010, at Central Presbyterian Church with Dr. David Wadsworth officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Mr. Sylvia Ray Entsminger Jr., 71, of 813 E. Oneida Trail, died Friday, August 13, 2010. He was the husband of Barbara Snead Entsminger. Mr. Entsminger was born March 11, 1939 in Covington, the son of the late Sylvia Ray Entsminger, Sr. and Helen Shepherd Entsminger. Virginia Ash Barker Hall, 85, of Roanoke, Va., went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 13, 2010. She was retired from Carter Machinery. Virginia enjoyed working in her flower garden, sewing, quilting and reading, especially World War II history. She also enjoyed spending time with her family and friends and listening to Country and Blue Grass music. Virginia was the widow of Clarence Edgar Hall. She was also preceded in death by her parents, John D. and Minnie P. Ash; stepmother, Helen E. Ash; her husband of 41 years, Clyde O. Barker; her sister, Nancy E. Anderson; her sister-in-law, Gladys B. Gray; and her brother-in-law, Ethyl J. Gray. She is survived by her son, Richard D. Barker and wife, Joyce S. Forloines, 75, passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at his residence in Midlothian, Virginia., Dr. Forloines was born on August 11, 1935, in Charlottesville, Virginia, to the late Grover W. and Helen Wood Forloines. His first wife, Alice Wood Forloines and a brother, Grover Thomas Forloines, also preceded him in death., He was a graduate of the University of Virginia and the MCV Medical School. William Gilbert Crowder, 90 of Fincastle, Va., passed away Thursday, August 12, 2010, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born April 11, 1920, in Fincastle, a son of the late Benton and Ida Crowder. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of almost 70 years, Junie B. Crowder; his sisters, Pearl Booth and Lucille Fisher; his brothers, Andrew, Luther, Elmer and Thomas. Gilbert was very active as one of Jehovah's Witnesses. He is survived by his son, Kenneth Crowder and wife, Maria, of Fincastle; his daughter, Gail Hudgins and husband, Donnie, of Fincastle; grandchildren, Tara Sanchez and husband, Luis, Toby Crowder and wife, Debbie, Taze Crowder and wife, Marisa, Nathan Hudgins and wife, Briana, Tedi Lilly and husband, Justin; nine great-grandchildren; two special nieces, Doretha Minnix, of Fincastle, and Norma Jean Stull, of Lithia; numerous other nieces and nephews; and very dear friends, Arnold Hammond, of Floyd, Va., Jean Powell, of Buchanan, Va., Joseph and Hilda Sullivan, of Fincastle.
