Artis Geneva Snead Powers, 84, of Dublin, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2010, at Pulaski Health & Rehab. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Walter Powers; a beloved daughter, Patricia Yvonne Powers; and her parents, Thomas and Polly Helton Snead. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Benjamin and Teresa Powers, of Christiansburg; three daughters and son-in-law, Linda and Gary Callahan, of Dublin, and Nancy Jones and Nora Powers, both of Radford; 10 grandchildren; and 13 greatgrandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff of Pulaski Health and Rehab for all their care. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at 2 p.m. at the Mullins Funeral Home in Radford with the Rev. Michael Blouse and the Rev. John Murphy officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. BOLINSKEY, Billy, 73, of Mechanicsville, died peacefully in his sleep August 28, 2010. He is survived by his sisters, Paulette Roccograndi (Anthony) and Rosemary Brooke (Larry); a brother, Patrick Bolinskey (Linda); nieces, Jacqueline Lund, Christy Bolinskey, Dr. Desiree Brooke and Kim Bolinskey; nephews, John Roccograndi, Kevin and Sean Bolinskey; a great-niece, Nicole Roccograndi; and a great-nephew, Mason Roccograndi. Billy was born April 20, 1937 in the mountains of southwest Virginia. He was the oldest of seven and graduated third in his high school class, which he always said wasn't too hard considering that there were only ten people in his class. That was always one of his favorite jokes to tell. He went on to graduate with a degree in chemistry from Virginia Tech. Billy had an amazing love of baseball, and it was nothing unusual to find him any summer day reading and watching numerous games at one time. He will always be remembered for his infectious laugh. The family will receive friends Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Monaghan Funeral Home, 7300 Creighton Pkwy., Mechanicsville, where a celebration of Billy's life will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday. |

Beulah E. Hancock, 93, of Pulaski, passed away late Friday, August 27, 2010 in the Highland Ridge Rehab Center. born in Delton, Va. May 13, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Matthew and Elizabeth Coalson Rigney Hancock. She was also preceded in death by her sister and brothers, Alma, Clarence and Clyde Rigney, Buford, Alton and Ishmal Hancock. She was a retired employee of Jefferson Mills. Surviving are nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Danny Cromer. Jimmy Tarpley officiating. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends a half hour before the service at the funeral home and other times at the home. He was born in Pittsylvania County on Oct. 9, 1951, to Dorsey Leftwich Jr. and Lucy Walton Leftwich. He was preceded in death by his parents. Leftwich was a delivery driver for Pepsi Bottling Co. for 10 years. Clarsie Sarver Furrow, 95, of Salem, went home to be with the Lord Friday, August 27, 2010. She was born February 6, 1915 in Ironto, Va., a daughter of the late John and Elizabeth Sarver. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl E. Furrow, son, Kenneth Furrow, three brothers, and three sisters. She retired from Kenrose Manufacturing after more than 25 years of service. Following her retirement she worked as a sitter, helping many recover from their sickness. She was a longtime, active member of New Life Christian Ministries. Surviving are her children, Evelyn Meadors, of Roanoke; Buford Furrow, of Olympia, Washington, Dorsey Furrow and wife, Barbara, of Anderson, S.C.; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. She was born on Dec. 26, 1914, in Washington County, a daughter of the late James Thomas Orfield Sr. and Betty South Orfield. Mrs. Carr was a longtime member of the Trigg Street Church of God in Abingdon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Robert L. Carr; one brother, James Thomas Orfield; and one sister, Mary Hyler. Survivors include two sons, James Robert "JR" Carr and wife, Yvonne of Abingdon and Roy Eugene Carr and wife, Birdie of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two daughters, Martha "Tippy" Thomas and husband, Dewey of Kingsport, Tenn., and Mildred Inscore and husband, Bobby of Abingdon, whom Mrs. Carr had made her home with for the last eight years; 11 grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; special friends, the family of the late Hazel Reed, Hazel Inman and her family and Nora Lee Gosa. Faithe Main Overstreet, 90, of Salem, Va., died on Tuesday, August 24, 2010. She was born on June 15, 1920, in Roanoke, Va., daughter of the late Rose Hundley and Andrew Robert Main. She is survived by her cherished husband, George M. Overstreet. They were married for 69 years. Surviving also are a son, Andrew D. Overstreet and wife, June, of Pearland, Texas; a daughter, Lisa and husband, Norman Allred; three granddaughters, Crystal Devail and husband, Andrew, and Amanda and Carmen; one grandson, Julian; great-grandson, Trevor Devail; great-granddaughter, Jordan Devail, all of High Point, N.C.; sister and brother-in-law, Martha Ann and Bob Davis, of Canton, Ga.; and a brother, A. Paul Main, of Spartanburg, S.C. Faithe graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, Waynesboro, Va., and National Business College. She worked as a secretary at Rainbow Bread Company. After raising her children she went to work at Lewis-Gale Hospital working with Medicare patients. She was active at Calvary Baptist Church of Roanoke teaching Sunday School, secretary of the Missionary Union, and helped set up the Baptist Friendship House on Elm Ave. for working with children. She helped organize the Salem Republican Women's Club. She was a Girl Scout leader; volunteered in donor room at Red Cross; completed a four year study "Education for Ministry" that covers the old and new testament, church history and theology joining St. Paul's Episcopal Church, of Salem in 1986, after hearing Dr. Scott Peck speak on the true meaning of prayer in life. Faithe learned about how to put into practice daily meditation and prayer which greatly enriched her Christian life and she helped organize and belonged to several prayer groups most of her adult life. A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 1, 2010, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Brad Laycock officiating. Inurnment will follow the service. Dr. Howard B. Watkins Dr. Howard B. Watkins, died peacefully, at home surrounded by family, Saturday, August 28, 2010., Howard was born on July 9, 1923, in Floyd County, Virginia, to James Robert and Pearl Shortt Watkins. He was the fifth of seven children, all of whom predeceased him., A graduate of Floyd County public schools, he enlisted in the aviation cadet program of the Army Air Force during World War II. Upon completion of his training, he served as a B-24 bomber pilot in Europe and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and various other air medals. After the war, Howard attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute and graduated from the Dental School of the Medical College of Virginia. He then returned to the Air Force for the Korean conflict and met his future bride, Geraldine Kortz, while stationed in St. Louis., Howard and Jerry moved to Charlottesville in 1953 to begin his dental practice. He served the Charlottesville community for over 30 years., In addition to his wife of 58 years, Howard is survived by their four children, Robert, Ann, Judy and Scott; his daughter in-law, Caroline; four precious grandchildren, Ellie, Will Sarah and Lillian; nieces, nephews and his beloved dog, Luke., He is remembered and loved by many caring friends and neighbors., Howard was a man of many interests and a true patriot as a member of the Greatest Generation. He enjoyed the outdoors and traveled to Switzerland, Africa and the Tetons to climb with friends and family. He enjoyed his daily "dog walk" for many years with the dog walk gang through the trails on Observatory Mountain. He loved Virginia and Floyd County, traveling there frequently to visit the family farm. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather., The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, August 31, 2010, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home. Irene Parsons Allen, 100, a teacher and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, died on Thursday, August 26, 2010, at Westminster-Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, where she was a resident for 10 years. Her husband, Charles Sparks Allen, died in 2000. Before his death, the Allens celebrated over 65 years of marriage., After living and raising their children in the Fayetteville-Manlius, New York, area during their first 35 years of marriage, they were retired for 30 years, living in the Adirondacks, Georgia, and North Carolina. They had a very active, happy life, full of friends, family, travels and community involvement. They both were active in the Presbyterian Church. In Charlottesville, Mrs. Allen was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church., Mrs. Allen was an avid gardener and enjoyed painting china, sharing time with her many special friends, and being with her grandchildren and great- grandchildren., She was born on May 9, 1910, in Lincoln, Nebraska. She graduated from Syracuse University's Teacher College in 1931, and taught at elementary schools in the Syracuse area., She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Virginia and Edward McFadden of Charlottesville, Mary and Bob Koehl of Chevy Chase, and Charles and Mary Lynn Allen of Brookfield, Connecticut; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including in Charlottesville, her granddaughter, Deborah M. Elder M.D.; Deborah's husband, Gene Elder; and Mrs. Allen's great-granddaughters, Elizabeth, Julia, and Lily Elder., Irene touched the lives of many people throughout her years of aging., She will be remembered for her determination, love of life, generosity and happy smile. Her steadfast optimism continues to be an inspiration to all who knew her. James Willie (JW) Hall, of Rocky Mount, went home to his Lord and Savior Friday, August 27, 2010. J W was a, veteran who proudly served in the Navy as a SeaBee in the South Pacific. In his younger days, he owned and operated Hall's Radio and TV Repair. During his retirement years, he loved socializing at McDonalds and Dairy Queen. JW was preceded in death by his parents, Monroe and Pearl Hall, and his loving wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Wells Hall. Surviving are his only son, William Monroe Hall, wife Melissa and his only grandchild Luci Hall, JW's pride and joy. Joe M."Pete" Sword SALTVILLE, Va. Joe M. "Pete" Sword, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, at Francis Marion Manor in Marion, Va. Mr. Sword was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Lora Clapp Sword. He was born in Russell County, Va., on June 8, 1915, to Marcell and Celia Hayes Sword. He was the last surviving member of the his family. Pete was a retired employee of the Olin Corporation and H.S. Willams Company as well as a brick mason having contributed to the work at the high school, town hall and T.K. McKee hospital in Saltville. Survivors: his two sons, James "Cheeta" Sword, his special care giver of Saltville, Bill Sword (Peggy) of Marion; three daughters, Lois Nutter (Malcolm) of Cleveland, Tenn., Jackie Moore (Morris) of Martinsville, Va., Judy Plummer (Ford) of Lebanon, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, Mark Sword, Kim Moore Myers, Suzanne Moore Ginter, David Moore, Debbie Nutter Beshears, Jeff Nutter, Bryan Sword, Greg Sword; 12 great- grandchildren; four step- grandchildren; five great- great-grandchildren; a host of friends; several nieces and nephews. Aug 30, 2010 The funeral for Joseph Edison Thomas, 80, of 97 Eighth St., Fieldale, who died Aug. 28, 2010, at his home, will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Home in Bassett with Elder Carl Terry officiating. Burial will be in the Goodwill Primitive Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home. He was born in Spray, N.C., on Oct. 25, 1929, to Joseph Montague Thomas and Zada Barton Thomas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two wives, Doris Marie Doss and Nira Stone Thomas; one son, Jerry Wayne Thomas; and one sister, Viola Thomas Walker. He retired from Fieldcrest Mills, where he worked in the finishing department for more than 35 years. He was of the Primitive Baptist faith and attended Goodwill Primitive Baptist Church. He also attended Primitive Baptist Association meetings such as Pig River and Blue Ridge. Surviving are a son, James Thomas of Eden, N.C.; two sisters, Shirley Martin of Narrows and Frances Perdue of Patrick Springs; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. |

Wood., He practiced at the law firm, Wood, Wood & Wood with his father and brother until he retired. He was a member of Farmington Country Club and Red Land Club., He served on the Board of the Miller Center, Miller School, UVA Alumni Association, and Salvation Army and also served on the Vestry at St. Paul's Church, Ivy., He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Wood; his brother, David J. Wood Jr.; his three children, Betsy and her husband, Sandy Stuart, of Charlottesville, Mary Minor and her husband, Peter Henderson, of Crozet, and Whitney Wood of Charlottesville; and six grandchildren, Anne Colston Stuart Carr, Jeb Stuart, Will Henderson, Carter Henderson, Whitney Henderson and Peter Henderson., He loved participating in golf, tennis, squash and croquet. He never passed up a chance to play bridge and gin rummy with his friends. Joe had a great sense of humor and he was always ready to share the latest joke with you. LEVY, Dr. Leon H., 84, of Richmond, died August 24, 2010. He is survived by his wife, The Rev. Dr. Sandra M. Levy; and his three children, Paul Levy of Portland, Oregon, Judy Levy of Ann Arbor, Michigan, and Claire Levy of Boulder, Colorado; as well as two stepsons, Brian Esterling of Durham, North Carolina, and Kevin Esterling of Riverside, California. Dr. Levy was born in 1925 in Patterson, New Jersey, and served in the Army during World War II, first seeing combat in Germany (2nd Battalion, 343rd Infantry Regiment, 86th Division) and later stationed in the Philippines before being honorably discharged from the military. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology from Antioch College, Yellowsprings, Ohio, in l950, and in l954 was granted a Ph.D. in Psychology from Ohio State University. He joined the faculty of Indiana University, Bloomington, and remained there for 24 years, where from 1969 to 1978 he served as the Director of Clinical Training in the graduate program. Dr. Levy also served as Professor and Chair of the Psychology Department at the University of Maryland (Baltimore County) from 1978 until he retired in 1996, where he successfully launched a unique Ph.D. program in Human Services Psychology. He was the author of two scholarly texts in personality interpretation and theory, Psychological Interpretation and Conceptions of Personality, and was also the author of over 60 scientific publications in scholarly journals. Dr. Levy also served on many national committees for the American Psychological Association, including most recently being a member of the Board of Directors' Standing Hearing Panel of the Ethics Committee. He was the recipient of numerous national Public Health Service grants, studying most recently the efficacy of self help groups as mental health resources and the effects of hospice care on bereavement outcome. After moving to Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Levy served as an Affiliate Research Professor in the Department of Psychology, Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a loving husband, father, and stepfather, as well as grandfather to five lovely girls. He will be greatly missed by family members, as well as by students and colleagues who have admired and loved him. CARGILE, Louis Laymon "Buddy" Jr., of Mechanicsville, born in Natchez, Miss. on July 6, 1927, the son of the late Louis L. Cargile Sr. and Gladys McCrea Cargile, passed away on Friday, August 27, 2010. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Lydia Ann McKay Cargile, and is survived by one brother-in-law, two nephews, one niece, several great-nieces, and many devoted friends whose love and support were greatly appreciated by him. Buddy attended LSU before enlisting in the Marine Corps serving as a cryptographer under the Chief of Naval Operations during the occupation of Japan, China and Guam. He was recalled into service for the Korean War to help rebuild the 2nd Marine Division. Upon leaving the Marines, he went to work for Government Intelligence in Washington, D.C. leaving in 1958 to work at the Reynolds Metals Corp H.Q. in Richmond, retiring in 1985 after 27 years of service. A Mason for 60 years, he belonged to the Concordia #305 F&A.M. in Vadalia, La.; Washington Henry #344 A.F.&A.M.; Manchester Royal Arch #48, and in 1974 was Worshipful Master of Hellinic #249 A.F.&A.M. which was later absorbed into Metropolitan #11. He was also a life member of the Mechanicsville VFW Post 9808. Lucenda Quesenberry Marshall, of Christiansburg, received the call from our Lord to come home on Saturday, August 28, 2010, leaving her husband of 57 years, Claude W. Marshall; and daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Bob Ashcraft to cherish her memory. "Sylvie" was born on October 24, 1927, in a house on the family home place where she grew up in the Willis area of Floyd County. She was the daughter of Kinzar and Minnie Quesenberry. Of their nine children, Sylvie is survived by a sister, Ugie Poffel and husband, Joe, of Baltimore; and a brother, Harley Quesenberry and wife, Vesta, of Woodlawn. She is also survived by nieces, nephews, and her very special friends, Roy, Brenda, and Tyler Lyons of Pilot. The family wants to thank all of the doctors, nurses, caregivers, friends, and neighbors for their help, prayers, and support during this time. "Thank You" also to Shirley Akers, Lori Nelson, Ruth Stuart, and Teresa Witmer of Good Samaritan Hospice for their care and guidance, and to caregiver Virginia Tinsley. A special heartfelt "Thank You" to caregiver Liese Carman who has shown Sylvie so much love and kindness in caring for her. Sylvie retired from Imperial Reading after more than 35 years of service as a sewing machine operator. She was a strong lady who courageously faced cancer twice, victoriously both times. She loved the outdoors, tending a garden, being among her flowers, and especially going "up home" to help keep up and preserve the place of her childhood, where her heart never left. She had a special fondness for birds and animals. Kasey will miss her visits. Thomas., Bobby was a wonderful person who was full of life. He was a dedicated husband and father and loved to spend time with his family and friends. He served in the United States Army from 1963 until 1966 in Wurzburg, Germany, and later chose a career as a tractor trailer driver for Jake Alexander and Macsteel, which he did for over 30 years. His hobbies included playing golf, watching NASCAR and working on cars. He was born in Martinsville on Jan. 20, 1961, to Sestress Gaylord Horton and Dorothy Howell Horton. He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, Kathy Wilson Horton of the home; two daughters, Katie Lynn Horton of Martinsville and Kelly Ann Landaverde of Axton; two grandchildren; three sisters, Debbie Cockram and Kathy Gravely of Martinsville and Lorrie Horton of Patrick Springs; one brother, Kevin Horton of Appomattox; and several nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bassett Funeral Service with the Rev. Palmer Lowery and Chris Robertson officiating. Burial will be in the Horton family cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. |

Sharon Jeanine Calhoun, 62, of Roanoke, passed away after a courageous battle with lung cancer on Saturday, August 28, 2010. She was preceded in death by her mother, Bessie Jenkins and sister, Doris Ann King. Sharon enjoyed a long career with Vista Corp., a division of Graham White. Surviving are her daughter, Stephanie L. Reavis and husband, Greg, of Roanoke; grandsons, Mitch and Stuart; sister, Darlene Mross; brothers, Marshall Jenkins and wife, Scarlett, James Jenkins, Steve Jenkins, David Jenkins and wife, Robin and Darryl Jenkins; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Thomas David Combs BRISTOL, Tenn. Thomas David Combs, age 65, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Aug. 27, 2010, at his residence. He was born July 28, 1945, in Bristol Virginia, a son of the late Paul and Georgia Lee Combs, and has lived all of his life in the Bristol area. He was a retired employee of Electrolux and Shown Trucking Company. He was a member of Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church. Mr. Combs was a Vietnam War Air Force veteran and he was preceded in death by a brother, Ronald C. Combs. He is survived by his loving wife, Janice "Jan" Combs. Also surviving, stepson, Daniel Mack Hagy; brother, Paul E. Combs Jr. and wife Katherine; special mother-in-law, Estelle Boggs; brother-in-law, Robert Martin; sisters, Patricia Smith, Linda Wise and husband Hugh, Judy Simcox; sister-in-law, Melinda Combs; several nieces and nephews; special little pets, Boris and Ivan. A funeral service for Mr. Combs will be held 8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30, 2010, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joe Hudson officiating. The daughter of the late Harry and Anna Arnold, she was born in Weldon, Pa. on June 4, 1926. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Petersburg Ward). A graduate of Philadelphia General Hospital School of Nursing, she was a member of the Who's Who in Professional Nursing. She retired from the U.S. Kenner Army Hospital in 1989 as a Supervisory Clinical Nurse in the Surgical Nursing Section, and was a former employee of Southside Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her sister, Marion Boutcher; a grandson, Richard Ponton; and niece, Debbie Boutcher. She is survived by five children, Sandra Snitkin and husband, Lou, of White Plains, N.Y., David Nelson and wife, Beth, of Chesterfield, Charlotte Woodcock and husband, Kenneth, of Chester, Kriss Glass and husband, Clayton, of Petersburg, and Michael Nelson and wife, Elizabeth, of Mooresville, N.C.
