CARNEAL, Austin B. "Pat," 82, of Tappahannock, died Friday, December 31, 2010. Pat was a member of the Randolph Macon College 1946 Virginia state baseball championship team and was an honoree of R-MC's "Friends of Baseball." A member of Beale Memorial Baptist Church, he was a World War II Army veteran, during which time he played baseball for the Scholfield Redlanders while stationed in Honolulu, Hawaii. He played semipro baseball for the Richmond Colts. Pat was a member of the American Legion, the Teamsters Union and the Essex Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Beale and Nancy Elliott Carneal; and five brothers, William Beale Carneal Jr., Douglas G. Carneal, John M. Carneal, Temple M. "Pete" Carneal and Thomas Walter Carneal Sr.; and his former wife, Shirley Campbell Carneal. Mrs. Austin retired as director of Newport News Public Schools and Riverside Hospital School of Practical Nursing. She was a charter member of the Carrollton Womens Club. Anne Parker Carr SUFFOLK - Anne Parker Carr, 90, passed away Jan. 2, 2011 at home. She was the daughter of the late Jesse Piland and Charles Thomas Parker. She was the widow of James A. Carr Jr. She was an active member of Holy Neck Christian Church. She was previously a member of Holland Baptist Church where she was a member of the Board of Deacons, choir member, WMU member, and church building committee. She was a graduate of Holland High School and the Norfolk School of Business. She was secretary and treasurer of the Holland Peanut Company, Secretary of Ad Products Co., and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years, retiring as the Holland Station manager in 1983. She was predeceased by her first husband, Truitt Umphlett and brother, George D. Parker. Cecil E. Carder, Sr. Cecil E. Carder, Sr., age 86, entered into rest December 29, 2010 at Elm Terrace Gardens, Lansdale, Pa. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Dorothy Hawkins Carder., Born in Culpeper County, Cecil was the son of the late Bernard Amiss Carder and Jessie Mae Carder. Cecil was a veteran of World War II, serving in the China-Burma-India Theater as part of the Army Air Forces, where he reached the rank of Staff Sergeant., Following his discharge from the military, Cecil completed high school in Culpeper in 1946, and attended Bluefield College, and the Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia, receiving his BA degree in 1950. In that same year he married his wife, Dorothy, and was also ordained as a minister by Culpeper Baptist Church. As a member of the first class to graduate from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary at Wake Forest, NC, he completed his BD in 1954. He continued his studies at Cornell University and Ohio State University., Cecil and Dorothy were commissioned as American Baptist Missionaries in 1954, and assigned to Thailand. They arrived in Thailand in 1955, and in 1957, they established the Sahsart Suksa School in Namlat, Thailand. The school, which began in a one room building with 57 students, was the first school established specifically for children from Thailand's tribal minorities. With a student body or more than 2,300 in kindergarten through 12th grade, a staff of 75 teachers and 23 workers, Sahasart Suksa now includes children from indigent families representing 11 different tribal groups., In 1963, Cecil and Dorothy moved to Bangkok, where he served as Field Secretary for the American Baptist Mission in Thailand. During his tenure, American Baptists were joined by Australian and Swedish Baptists in the cooperative effort that became the Thailand Baptist Missionary Fellowship. Cecil and Dorothy also served in support of The Maitrichit Chinese Baptist Church, the first Chinese baptist church in the world, as well Sacred Light Baptist Church in Thonburi. In 1980, following his return to the United States, Cecil became Area Secretary of the American Baptist Board of International Ministries for Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, China and Hong Kong. He also served as coordinator for the ABC World Relief Committee., Following his retirement from ABC/USA in 1990, Cecil and Dorothy remained active in their local church, most recently as a member of First Baptist Church of Lansdale, Pa., where he retained his commitment to the Karen people of Southeast Asia., Surviving Cecil are three children, Jonita Evelyn Carder of Philadelphia, Pa., Cecil Carder, Jr. and his wife, Sunni, of Cypress, Texas and Jeanette Meyers and her husband Wren of Occoquan, Va.; four grandchildren, Jeffrey and Robert Carder of Cypress, Texas and Claire and Tess Meyers of Occoquan, Va.; two brothers, Russell Carder of Culpeper, Va. and Harold Carder of Sun City Center, Fla. He was born in Patrick County on July 8, 1929, to Charlie Lee Lawless and Cora Alma Rorrer Lawless. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Marie Puckett Lawless; a great-granddaughter, Erica Nichole "Nikki" Belcher; two sisters, Clarabell Coleman and Eulalie Padgett; and a brother, Arthur W. Lawless. He was a member of Sycamore Baptist Church. He had retired from United Elastic and was the van driver for the Southern Area Agency on Aging. Surviving are his daughter, Deborah K. Lawless of Stuart; two sons, Charlie Wade Lawless Jr. and Teddy Ray Lawless, both of Stuart; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, James A. Lawless of Danville. Mrs. Sheets received vocational certification through Virginia Polytechnic Institute and retired from the Washington County School System after teaching for 35 years. Cornelia Dinneen McCarthy, Cornelia (Connie) Dinneen McCarthy born in Medford, Massachusetts, September 7, 1917, entered into eternal rest Friday, December 31, 2010., She was the daughter of the late Cornelius M. Dinneen and Mary Patenaude Dinneen of Medford, Massachusetts., She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, John George McCarthy., She was also preceded in death by three sons, John Michael, Cornelius (Neil) Peter, and Haber Joseph McCarthy; a granddaughter, Mary Alanna Pierce; and three sisters, all members of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Sister Lucilla (Margaret) Dinneen, Sister Cornelius (Doris) Dinneen and Sister Andre (Esther) Dinneen., Connie graduated from Regis College, Weston, Massachusetts, with a major in mathematics. Her first job after graduation was as a high school math teacher. After marrying John, she took pride in creating a home for her seven children as well as caring for her father and aunt in their later years., She served the various communities in which she lived from Massachusetts to New York to Virginia and North Carolina. BOWES, Daniel Scott Bowes, 46, died Sunday, November 14, 2010. He was the husband of Darlene Annette Bowes for 25 years. Daniel was born October 29, 1964 in Richmond, the son of Evelyn Cooper Crisman of Caroline County, Va. For over 20 years, Daniel worked as the Regional Supervisor for Dodson Brothers Pest Control. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Devin Rose and husband, Shawn of West Point; a granddaughter, Kylie Rose; a sister, Vickie Watson; two brothers, Mike Bowes and Patrick Bowes all of Virginia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Edna was a past president of the Emblem Club and an active member of the Eastern Star. He was born in Rockingham County on Sept. 22, 1942, to Robert Lee Atkins and Mattie Iris White Atkins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mattie DeShazo Atkins; a granddaughter, Shania Cheyenne Panizzi; and a brother, Robert "Bobby" Atkins. He attended Madison-Mayodan High School, and he was a Navy veteran who served in the Vietnam War. Atkins retired from Lloyd's Heating & Air Conditioning. He was of the Christian faith. Helen Daniel Rodman, Helen Daniel Rodman, 89, of Charlottesville, died Friday, December 31, 2010., She was born in Philadelphia, July 7, 1921, the daughter of the late Channing W. Daniel and Katherine Verner Daniel of Richmond., She is survived by her son, William Louis Rodman Jr.; a daughter, Channing Penna; and honorary son and caregiver, Charles Chabot., She also is survived by four grandchildren, Sean Stewart Rodman, Trevor Thieme, Brandon Thieme, and Channing Spring Rodman; and two great-grandchildren, Jasmine Fulton Rodman and Isaac Hugh Rodman., A second daughter, Joan Stewart Rodman, pre-deceased her in 1973. Bill Rodman, her beloved husband of 68 years, pre-deceased her on January 8, 2010., In 1951, Bill joined the United States Foreign Agricultural Service and with Helen and family, served for 35 years with postings in Canada, Argentina, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Panama, Australia, Mexico and England., Following retirement to Charlottesville in 1980, Helen became active in community affairs founding the Piedmont Chapter of the Compassionate Friends in 1983, a support group for bereaved parents. Having received support from The Compassionate Friends in London when her daughter Joni died in 1973, she wanted to offer the same friendship and understanding to others facing the loss of a child. Throughout the years, she encouraged the formation of chapters in other areas of central Virginia and she considered this work her most important accomplishment., In 1999, Helen published From This Day Forward, Memoirs of An Attache Wife, a book that traced the diplomatic and personal life of the Rodman family through the years of World War II up to Bill's retirement from the United States Foreign Service. Filled with recollections of people and events, it is a memoir of an American family living in other countries keeping the values that allowed them in Helen's words, "to grow to maturity in the security of home, free of social and economic prejudices." James Edgar Pitts SUFFOLK - James Edgar Pitts, 96, died Dec. 30, 2010 in Sentara Obici Hospital. Born in Bullock County, Alabama, he was the seventh of nine children to the late Lucina and Oliver Pitts and was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtis Eliza Pitts; his son, James E. Pitts Jr., and granddaughter, Danielle Pitts. Mr. Pitts lived in Peachburg, Ala., before entering the military in 1940 in Columbus, Ga., (Fort Benning) after a period in the military he was honorably discharged only to re-enter the military and served in the Pacific Theater. He was again honorably discharged as a staff sergeant. Following his military service he worked multiple jobs in New York City and retired from New York City Transit Authority as a dispatcher supervisor. Mr. Pitts is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Joycelyn and William C. Richardson, their children, Edward D. Janice C. Hicks Boling BLUFF CITY, Tenn. Janice C. Hicks Boling, age 84, passed away Fri day, Dec. 31, 2010, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in the presence of her family. Janice was baptized in the Holston River at age 11 and became a faithful, lifelong member of the Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Raymond and Ida Lebow Hicks and was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Boling. Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Charles Boling of the home; one daughter, Sandra Friesland and husband David of Gray, Tenn.; two sons, Charles Boling Jr. and wife Brenda of Abingdon, Va., Raymond Boling of Orlando, Fla.; one granddaughter, Lauren Boling of Abingdon. She graduated from Bluff City High School in 1945, was an active member of the Bluff City Chapter of the 414 OES for 42 years and served as a past matron. She retired after 25 years with Raytheon, taught Sunday school, enjoyed the fellowship of Emanon and Happy Campers, and loved the members of her Senior Citizen organization and their trips. Special thanks to Sharon Bonordin, Billie Mills, Freda Riley, Jane Willingham and the 3rd floor nursing staff of Sycamore Shoals Hospital. `The funeral service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2011, at Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Steve Hensley, Rev. Jamie Ferguson, and Rev. Scott Green officiating. Music will be provided by the Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church Choir. The family will receive friends from 6 - 7:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church and other times at the residence. Active pallbearers will be David Bartley, Mark Blevins, Gary Boling, Jim Goodman, Bruce Hicks, Doug Lewis, Rodney O'Dell, and Bobby Sossoman. Janine was born to Andre' and Juliette Potor and raised in France. As a young girl, her favorite place was Yvetot. The ocean held a special place in her heart. She came to the United States as the bride of Alvin, who was a GI during the American occupation of France in World War II., Janine was artistic and innovative and a gourmet. She was creative with fabric and an accomplished seamstress, making clothes and stuffed animals for her family. She collected fabrics for the many ideas she had brewing in her creative mind. Janine painted too., Janine was fun-loving and playful; a good practical joker. Everyone who met her seemed to enjoy her company and was curious about her lovely French accent. She will be missed., She is survived by her husband, Alvin A. Wisco of Charlottesville; a son, Eric A. Wisco and his wife, Aysim A. Wisco. of Greensboro, North Carolina; and a daughter, Sandra J. Wisco of Charlottesville; a sister, Odette Masse' in Rouen France., She was predeceased by a brother, Jean Pierre; and a sister, Nadine, all from France. Joseph A. Gould Jr. PORTSMOUTH - Joseph A. Gould Jr., 70, passed away Dec. 8, 2010 after a courageous battle with lung cancer. He is survived by his children, Tyrann N. Taylor, Michael J. Gould, Troy R. Gould; grandsons, Jason K. Taylor and Ryan I. Gould. He will be missed by all who know him. The last few months have been some of the most challenging, sad, happy, rewarding times for Joseph Allison Gould Jr. Also known as, Joe, Joseph, Joe Cool, Tri-Joe, The blond guy in the bucket truck working on traffic lights in Portsmouth. He was a cook in the Army, served in the National Guard during the Ash Wednesday Storm, retired from the City of Portsmouth serving as a traffic engineer/electrician. Joe surfed in Nags Head many summers, was a master tri-athlete who won many awards. The completion of the Iron Man in Hawaii was one of those many accomplishments. Through his life, he was humble, modest, vain, frugal, dependable, disciplined... We will miss him so much. Joseph N. Todd, Jr., June 3, 1925 - Dec. 28, 2010 Joe Todd, age 85, formerly of Culpeper, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Sunrise Assisted Living, Grand Rapids, Michigan, with his loving daughter at his side. He was an only son born to the late Joseph N., Sr. and Edith Lukei Todd on June 3, 1925 in Washington, D.C., Joe was an U.S., Air Corps World War II veteran, Clemson University alumni, and Norfolk Southern Railway retiree of a long, successful career. He and his wife, Kathleen, lived most of their adult lives raising their family in North Carolina, Tennessee, Northern Virginia and Anderson, SC, moving to Culpeper in 1994. Joe had passed through Culpeper many times by train during his career, admiring the town and dreaming of living here one day. As he expected, many warm and kind citizens accepted them, so he finished his remaining years giving back in many ways to the community he grew to love., Some of those contributions include: Serving as an Elder of the First Presbyterian Church; design of the first public transit system, so those without other means could get around; work on the Veteran's Recognition Committee; Lion's Club member; and many heartfelt donations of his time, smile, and resources to those in need who came his way., Mr. Todd was also a 50+ year Free Mason of the Fairfax Lodge. He truly exemplified values of honesty, integrity and service and was very proud of being a Mason. A Masonic service will be held in conjunction with the memorial service described below., Joe is survived by his sons, Steve and John of Virginia, daughter, Kathy of Michigan, and six grandchildren, Angela, Jennifer, Jordan, Adam, Courtney and Shelby, of whom he was very proud. Joyce E. Brown SUNBURY - Dr. Joyce Elliott Brown, 73, of the 310 block of Water Swamp Road, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011 in Brian Center of Windsor. Dr. Brown was born in Independence, Mo., and was the daughter of the late Paul B. and Carrie Elliott. A retired voice, diction and English professor from Chowan University in Murfreesboro, she received her B.A. from the University of Kansas, her master's from the Yale School of Drama, and her doctorate from Columbia University. A faithful member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church, she had served as its organist for more than 25 years, was a past president of the Gates County Rotary Club, was a Paul Harris Fellow, had received the District No. 7720 Rotarian of the Year Award, had served on the Board of Governors for Roanoke Chowan Community College, and many years ago had starred as Nurse Casey in the daytime drama, "Search For Tomorrow." Surviving are her husband of 33 years, Bedford H. Brown Jr.; a stepdaughter, Margaret Brown Klages of Suffolk; and many friends and extended family members. BATTE, Kathryn Ann Woodson "Kitty," of Richmond, died quietly at age 98 on the last morning of the decade, December 31, 2010, with her family at her side. She was the widow of DuRoc Jones Batte. She was predeceased by her parents, William Felix Woodson and Kathryn Ann Boatwright; by her brothers and sister, Benjamin F. Woodson, William P. Woodson and Elizabeth Woodson Mayes; and by her niece, Susan Woodson Pechfelder. She is survived by her nieces and nephew, Margaret Woodson Nea, Jean Woodson Minix, Benjamin M. Woodson; and great-nieces and nephews, Courtney Nea Jones, Ann Meade Nea Watkins, Holly Minix Urbanek, Kathryn Woodson DuMont, Benjamin F. Woodson and Jason Woodson Pechfelder. She is also survived by 11 great-great-nieces and nephews. Born February 3, 1912, she was raised in Ginter Park and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1931. A graduate of Longwood College, she was a teacher at Bell Bryan Day Nursery School and later taught in Alexandria, Virginia. During World War II, she served as a driver for the American Red Cross Motor Corps, a war-time transportation service. She was a member of the Colonial Dames, DAR, UDC and the Jamestown Society. After many years in Alexandria, she and her husband retired to Imperial Plaza in Richmond in 1986. At the end of her gracious life, she will always be remembered for her generosity, indomitable spirit, genteel hospitality and love of life. Jan 3, 2011 MAYODAN, N.C. — Lena Roach Bullins, 91, of Mayodan, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011. She was born in Axton, Va., on Oct. 14, 1919, to Charlie James Roach and Lizzie Clark Roach. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar W. Bullins; two brothers, Jesse Roach and Percy J. Roach; and three sisters, Nancy R. Stewart, Alma R. Haley and Fairy R. Bolt. She graduated from Brosville High School. She served as a civilian employee with the Navy to support essential wartime work during World War II. She retired from DuPont as a supervisor with more than 30 years' service. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Mayodan, where she taught the preschool class for 30 years and was a member of the Young at Heart class. She was a member of the Ayersville ECA Club for 50 years. Surviving are her sister, Louise R. McDaniel of Axton; six nieces; and two nephews. The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church of Mayodan with the Rev. Randy Jessup officiating. Burial will be in the Beaver Island Baptist Church cemetery in Mayodan. Mary S. Richardson DAMASCUS, Va. Mary S. Richardson, age 83, passed away Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011, at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va. Melvin Francis Naylor, 80, died Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at his home in Charlottesville., He was born June 13, 1930, the son of William Hobson Naylor and Mary Claude (Claudie) Bickers., He was preceded in death by, Margaret Walker Naylor, his wife, of 49 years; two sisters, Margaret Wright Douglas and Hazel Pauline Morris; and two brothers, Lemuel Ray Naylor and William Albert Naylor., Survivors include two sisters, Louise F. Morris of Earlysville, and Mary Nimmo of Ruckersville; and numerous nieces and nephews., Mr. Naylor was a metal cutter at a manufacturing facility for many years. His main hobbies were making and refinishing furniture, and yard sales. He was a real pro at both. Jackson, 80, of Washington, D.C., a retired United States Postal Service Supervisor, died Tuesday, December 28, 2010, at his daughter's home in Framingham, Massachusetts., Mr. Jackson was born in Faber, October 20, 1930, to the late Helen and McKinley Jackson., As a young man, he gained a lot of experience in logging and farming by working on the family property in Faber. After graduating from the Nelson County Training School in June 1947, he worked in a veneering plant in Amherst and for a logging company in Charlottesville., Mr. Jackson grew up in a Christian family. During his youth he attended Cedar Grove Baptist and Mount Airy Baptist churches in Faber. He was a long-time active member of Union Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church in Washington, D.C., where he served on the Senior Usher Board., On August 27, 2010, Mr. Jackson celebrated 50 years of marriage to his wife, Emma Gene, who survives him. They resided in Washington, D.C., In addition, his survivors include his two daughters, Melva Jackson of North Plainfield, New Jersey, and Glenda Thomas of Framingham, Massachusetts; two brothers, Albert Jackson of Linden, New Jersey, and Warren Jackson of Faber; a sister, Delores J. Whindleton of Faber; one sister-in-law, Agnes Jackson; one brother-in-law, Amos Whindleton; two aunts, Verlease J. Bell of Charlottesville, and Shirley J. Mills of Newark, New Jersey. Rena Lorraine Richardson Farmer MARION, Va. Rena Lorraine Richardson Farmer, age 85, left her earthly place and reached her Heavenly home Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, surrounded by loving family in Sm yth County Community Hospital. She was a faithful member of Falling Water Baptist Church and had been employed by Southwestern State Hospital for more than 20 years where she showed her patients the same loving care she offered to her family. Lorraine was a very proud graduate of Konnarock Training School for Girls, Konnarock, Va. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and granny. She enjoyed playing the piano and accordion (as long as no one was looking at her). Lorraine had a keen sense of purpose, as she was a "behind the scenes" encourager, supporter and prayer warrior for her family and friends. Though you usually wouldn't hear her say many, Lorraine shared her words in the form of poetry. This is where her love of family, friends, fun stories of her growing up years and wonderful sense of humor spoke volumes. These memories are cherished today by her family. She is survived by her husband, Robert M. Richard R. Rafferty VIRGINIA BEACH - Richard R. Rafferty 85, passed away Dec. 31, 2010, in a Norfolk hospital. He was born to the late George and Helena Rafferty in Chelmsford, Mass. He was the youngest of 12 children and is survived by his sister, Rosemary Dutney. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. After graduating from Merrimack College, he worked as a civilian agent with naval intelligence. He then had a long and distinguished career with the FBI and retired as a supervisory special agent and was a member of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI. After retiring from the FBI, he was an assistant administrator at Portsmouth General Hospital. He was a member of St. Gregory the Great Men's Club, the Knights of Columbus and was an avid golfer. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Eleanor and his daughters, Beth Rafferty, Caty Rafferty, Ellen Fish and Mary Farashahi; sons-in-law, Andy Fish and Afshin Farashahi; and grandchildren, Ryan Fish, Megan Fish, Nadia Farashahi and Anita Farashahi who worshiped him. Ruby Arnold Rutherford Whittaker Ruby Arnold Rutherford Whittaker received her angel wings at her home on Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011. She was a daughter of the late John Carroll and Una Blanche Rouse Arnold. She was a dedicated daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She graduated from Holston Valley High School and worked for many years as a seamstress at Gordon Garment Manufacturing. She loved to quilt and gifted many people with her handiwork. She had participated in Senior Olympics and represented Bristol in the Tennessee Senior Olympics Competition. She was an active member of Sinking Springs United Methodist Church, and she worked diligently in the Lord's Acre program since its inception. She served on many church committees including the finance committee, the church council, and was a church trustee. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James S. Rutherford; son, Ronnie Rutherford; granddaughter, Sara Rutherford; second husband, Robert Whittaker; sister, Sue Harmon; and brothers, Jack "Thomas" Arnold and James Lee "J.L." Arnold. She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Jackson; son, Eddie Rutherford; granddaughter, Lissa Jackson and fianc‚ Jason Stout; step-grandchildren, Julie Jackson and husband Tommy Keeney, and Ted Jackson; sisters, Virgie Dutton, Lucille Kane, and Ann Laster and husband Bud; very special friend, Kenneth Hyatt; step-children, Diane Whittaker and Tom Whittaker and wife Sandy; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Whittaker and her family are especially thankful for her caregiver angels. Carter, age 58, of Woodbridge, Va. passed away suddenly at Civista Medical Center in LaPlata, Md. on December 29 after a courageous 10-year battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy., He was born in Lubbock, Texas on September 10, 1952, to the late Sam and Grace Carter and graduated with a Bachelors of Science from Texas Tech University in 1975 and a Master of Science from the University of Maryland in 1977. Sam was a member of numerous organizations such as Bull Run Umpire Association, Eastern Prince William Basketball Association, Woodbridge Little League, Boys Scouts of America, and Sacred Heart Church as a religious teacher. He enjoyed reading and writing sci-fi novels, playing computer games, learning trivia, umpiring local baseball leagues, coaching basketball and baseball, watching soccer games, solving puzzles, but most of all he loved being a dad and husband., He is survived by his wife, Beverly A. Thomas J. Bury Jr., 86, passed away peacefully on Jan. 1, 2011., He was born May 17, 1924, to the late Thomas John Sr. and Ada Cox Bury. A native of the Bermuda District area of Chesterfield County, he graduated from Chester High School nee Thomas Dale High School in 1941. During World War II, he served his country in an administrative capacity at Camp Lee nee Fort Lee and in the Aleutian Islands off the Coast of Alaska. He earned a bachelor of commercial science degree from Benjamin Franklin University nee George Washington University School of Accounting in Washington, D.C. He served on the Administrative Board of Wesley United Methodist Church in Colonial Heights and as treasurer, choir member and Sunday school teacher. He worked for many years as an accountant for Pontiac dealerships in Petersburg and for 26½ years for the Petersburg daily newspaper, The Progress-Index, retiring in 1986. He was a charter member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and the Colonial Heights Civitan Club where he served as treasure in each. He was a member of the American Legion Post 284 in Colonial Heights and Crater Chapter A.A.R.P #1399. He has been a loving and committed husband, father and grandfather, and was admired by family and friends for his integrity, conscientiousness and loyalty., He survived by his devoted wife, Ruth Wilkinson Bury of Colonial Heights; his son, "T.J." (Psalm 23:1), Will Massenburg Jr. (Junnie), 66, of 15777 Cabin Stick Road, Stony Creek, Va., departed this life into eternal rest on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va. He was born May 21, 1944, in Sussex County, Va., to the late Will Massenburg Sr. and Leatha M. Massenburg., He graduated from Central High School in 1963 and furthered his education at Virginia State College (now Virginia State University). Will graduated in May 1979 with a bachelor of science degree in business., Will confessed Christ at an early age and joined Hunting Quarter Baptist Church in Stony Creek, Va. He was ordained as a deacon on April 29, 2006. Deacon Massenburg was an active and faithful servant who served diligently in whatever capacity he could. He served as chairman of the Diaconate Ministry, church treasurer, trustee, past president of the usher board, and sang in the male chorus. He loved Bible study and attended on a regular basis. Deacon Will was dedicated to his church and his pastor, Dr. Carroll Robb., Deacon Massenburg was actively involved in his community. He was a member of the Sussex County School Board, vice chairman of Sussex Social Services Department and served on the Rowanty Board of Trustees. He was a former employee of Brown and Williamson and a retired employee of the Department of Corrections (Probation and Parole), where he worked for 26 years. Will was also involved with Primerica Financial Services., Deacon Massenburg was definitely a people person who enjoyed making everyone laugh with his jokes. His hobbies included fishing, NASCAR racing, photography and watching television. Will was always helping people and frequently visiting the sick and shut-in to uplift them in prayer. He will be remembered as a loving, thoughtful, kind, helpful and compassionate person who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was honorably discharged on March 29, 1972. He was born in Chattanooga, Tenn., and was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Ray and Nell Harmon Davis; and his wife, Iona Faye Davis. Don was an ordained minister with The Salvation Army for 31 years before retiring and was recognized as a faithful steward of Salvation Army resources and programs. DOHERTY, Wilma Robinson, went to be with our Lord on December 31, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank L. Doherty, and her brother, Julian Robinson. She is survived by her brother, Jack Robinson, and her sister, Mabel R. Gammon, who was very devoted and loving and never left her side; three sons, James (Jenny), Dennis (Donna) and Dean (Robin); five grandchildren, Andy, Marcie, Angela, Chris and Kevin; five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Hailey, Paige, Ryan and Alyssa. She received the Nora Spencer Award for her 40 years of service at the American Lung Association. The best times of her life were with Mabel and Dorothy Leiffer. She will be missed by all. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, January 3 at the Parham Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, January 4 at Greenwood Memorial Gardens, 12609 Patterson Ave. Donations to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or the Food Bank would be appreciated.
