Angel Louise Ellis CARROLLTON - Angel Louise Ellis, 25, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011 at Riverside Convalescent Center. She was a special young lady who touched the lives of all who she knew with her unconditional love, quick smile, and easy laughter. Angel enjoyed music, movies, travel and theme parks. She went to Powwows in at least six states, spent many days at Busch Gardens, and took her family to meet Beauty and the Beast at Disney World on a trip sponsored by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Angel loved to dress up as movie characters including, Pocahontas, Tinker lily and Dorothy, from The Wizard of Oz. She often insisted on wearing her red shoes, which she called her "Rubies." Angel was preceded in death by her grandparents, Peggy M. Reid and Charles L. Post. Angel was the daughter of Carroll Thomas Ellis of Corapeake, N.C., and Nora Post of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. She is also survived by her sisters, Lisa Chilcote and husband Gavin of Virginia Beach and Kimberly Scribner and husband Joshua of Suffolk; paternal grandmother, Gladys Saunders and grandfather, "Paw Paw" Edward Saunders Sr. of Suffolk; her cousins, Bryant and Gaurielle Chilcote and Dylan and Natalie Scribner. A life celebration service will be held at noon, Saturday, Jan. 8, in Colonial Funeral Home with the Rev. Laura Early officiating. Burial will follow in Mount Zion Cemetery, Crittenden, Va. Mrs. Basnight was born in Glenolden, Pa., Oct. 16, 1920 and was preceded in death by her parents, Harry Wigmore and Kathryn Jones Wigmore and husband Leon B. Basnight Jr. She served as a clerk with Luhring Motor Company for 10 years and DMV for 17 years. Anne Hume Nash Risher, 89, died Thursday, January 6, 2011, at her residence., She was born February 8, 1921, in Norfolk., She moved to Charlottesville at an early age and considered Charlottesville her home until moving to Lynchburg in 1950., Anne attended local and private schools in Charlottesville and graduated from Saint Margaret's School in Tappahannock. During World War II, she was active in the Red Cross. She also worked in a munitions plant in Radford., After World War II, Anne became President of the University League, now the Junior League of Charlottesville. While President, she founded "The Opportunity Shop". It was a success from the start. The shop receives donated clothes and sells them to the public, with proceeds going to deserving charities., On April 10, 1948, she married John Calhoun Risher; they moved to Lynchburg in 1950. Soon after coming to Lynchburg, Anne was made chairman of the Cot Committee, an organization that helped low income patients obtain hospital admission. She was a member of the Florence Crittendon Board for many years. When the Lynchburg General Hospital moved to its present location, she and a group of ladies founded the Lynchburg General Hospital Womens' Auxilliary. She was a member of Saint John's Episcopal Church., She is survived by her husband, John Risher; her daughter, Alice Risher Painter and son-in-law James W. Betty Jane Graham Maiden BRISTOL, Va. Betty Jane Graham Maiden went to the Lord on Jan. 5, 2011, after a courageous battle with several health issues. Betty was born June 13, 1933, in Bristol Virginia, to the late Glayden and Alpha Campbell Graham of Bristol Virginia. Two sisters, Elva Pruitt of Bristol Virginia, and Virginia Lambert of Glen Burnie, Md., preceded her in death. Betty and Doug were married May 11, 1951. When Doug returned from Army service in 1954, they moved to Newport News, Va., to work at Newport News Dry Dock and Shipbuilding Company where she was employed as an engineering secretary. Betty and Doug moved back to Bristol in 1966 and she became a homemaker and bookkeeper for the family business for several years. In 1982, she was employed by Hill's Department Store as a cashier, moving up to office manager. She retired from Ames's Department Store as a store trainer with 20 years of service. Betty was a member of McIver Presbyterian Church of Bristol Virginia and volunteered for Faith in Action. Betty is survived by her husband of 59 years, Douglas Maiden of the home; one brother, Wendell Graham and wife Betty of Newport News; two sons, Scott Maiden and wife Karen of Tucson, Ariz., and Phillip Maiden and wife Joyce of Bristol; six grandchildren, Andrew Maiden and Matthew Maiden of Tucson, Heather Maiden of Kingsport, Kenny Castle, Kelly Castle and Kala Pierce of Bristol; five great-grandchildren; 25 nieces and nephews; and a host of special and dear friends. Betty Brown Tucker Betty Brown Tucker, 72, of Lynchburg, died January 5, 2011, at Lynchburg General Hospital. For 53 years, she was the loving wife of Ronald (Ronnie) T. Tucker. Born in Lynchburg, on August 25, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Julia Stinson and Joseph Swithin Brown. Betty was a 1956 graduate of E. C. Glass High School, and was the office manager for Dr. James Culclasure, Endondontist for 20 years. She was a member of South View United Methodist Church, an avid line dancer with groups at the Altavista Y, Timberlake Dancers @ the Moose and Fairview Recreation Center, and was a lifetime member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Laureate Alpha Chapter. In addition to her husband, Betty is survived by a son, David Scott Tucker, and Dr. Leslie Layne, of Gladys; a daughter, Gina Ellen Tucker, of Lynchburg; a brother, George C. DICKINSON, Cherryl Bates, 63, left this life Sunday morning January 2, 2011 after a long battle with early onset alzheimers. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at her home in Richmond, Va. She was born August 14, 1947 in El Paso, Texas to Woodrow and Lola Bates. Cherryl spent the majority of her vibrant adult life in Houston, Texas with her adoring husband, Dr. Terry D. Dickinson. Cezar Belandres Osorio VIRGINIA BEACH - Cezar Belandres Osorio, 90, of the 2600 block of Archdale Drive, passed away Jan. 5, 2011 in Sentara Bayside Hospital. A native of Cebu, Philippines, he was the son of the late Sulpicio and Hilaria Osorio. Cezar served from 1941 to 1946 in the Philippine Commonwealth Army and was a prisoner of war of the Japanese. From 1946 to 1949 with the USAFFE command (Philippine Scouts). After separating from the Army, he went back to school and eventually retired as chief of police, Davao, Philippines. In 1994, he joined his daughter and family in Virginia Beach. He is survived by his daughter, Celsa Osorio Rucker and her husband Daniel and their children Danielle and Christine Rucker, all of Virginia Beach; a brother, Jesus Duenas of the Philippines and two sisters, Amor Codillero and Leonora Bagazin, both of the Philippines. A Mass of the Resurrection will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Luke Catholic Church with Fr. Silvio Kaberia and Fr. Leo Manalo officiating. Cleo Price Sawyer PORTSMOUTH - Cleo Price Sawyer, 80, a native of Portsmouth, was called to rest Jan. 1, 2011 in her home. She was predeceased by parents, Isaac and Mary Livermon Price; husband, Pastor William Henry Sawyer. Mrs. Sawyer was a retired food service worker of Co-Operative Association at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, worked as a food handler at Frederick Military Academy and as a nurse at St. Mary's Nursing Home. She was a member of St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, where she served as a deaconess, member of the Nurses' Unit, United Voices and Tribe of Reuben. She is survived by daughters, Burnetta Askew of Portsmouth, Zeler (Andrew) Raspberry of Portsmouth, Constance (Malcolm) Bracy of Suffolk, Cleo White of Portsmouth, Evelyn (Ori) Williams of University City, Mo.; sisters, Mary Williams of Portsmouth, Evelyn (Malachi) Lewis of Philadelphia; brothers, Melvin (Florence) Price of Portsmouth, Leon (Arnita) Price of Capitol Heights, Md., 10 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives. Mench, who preceded her in death., Born in Indianapolis, Indiana, September 3, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Olmer and Helen Breeden., After the war, she married a fellow World War II veteran, Navy pilot Lt. James F. Mench. In the following years, she had two daughters, Melinda, Joan and a son, James Jr. The family was stationed on numerous military installations, including an overseas stint in Morocco. That posting allowed her to pursue her love of history and travel extensively in Europe and the Mediterranean area. Her husband eventually retired from the Navy and they moved to Orange County., While living in Orange, she was active in the Garden Club, President of the Women's Club, and for a time, was a county reporter for the Charlottesville Daily Progress. She also loved to play bridge and read., She is survived by two daughters, Melinda and her husband, Morgan Harlow, of Amherst, and Joan and her husband, David Clark, of Unionville; a son, James F. Mrs. Webb was the daughter of the late Stanley Berry and Susan Jones. She lived all of her life in the Bristol/Bluff City area. Mrs. Webb was a cafeteria manager for Bluff City Elementary School. Ernest T. Matacia, After a long and fruitful life, Ernest passed away peacefully Tuesday, January 4, 2011, in Phoenix, Arizona., Ernest, who preferred to be called Ernie, was born in Charlottesville, into a large Italian family, that included nine brothers and one sister., During WW II, Ernie was stationed for a period of time at the Air Base in Greenwood, Mississippi, where he supervised 110 civilian employees, 25 enlisted personnel and three officers. It was during his station in Greenwood, that he met his future wife, Adele Antoon., Adele was a woman of extreme beauty and southern charm and the two were married June 1, 1947. Shortly thereafter, Ernest returned to Charlottesville with his bride and went back to work with his brothers at The Matacia Fruit Company. But the Matacia family dynamics proved too challenging so in the mid-1960s Ernie left the Fruit Company and joined the Charlottesville Public School System as a CPA and remained there until his retirement in 1985., In 1986, Ernie lost his wife, Adele, to cancer., In 1987, Ernie moved to Phoenix, Arizona, to enjoy his retirement years and to be closer to his son, Stephen. He loved being part of Stephen's life and the climate in Arizona suited him well. Stephen and Ernie traveled frequently together and spent their free time playing tennis and golf. Ernie was an avid reader and a keen crossword puzzle solver. He loved to walk in the desert sun and was devout Catholic., He will be remembered for the twinkle in his eye, his warm smile, his wry sense of humor, and his southern gentleman demeanor., Those of us who knew and loved Ernie consider his passing an overdue blessing and we will grieve for the gentle soul we have lost., He will be missed deeply by his devoted daughter, Theresa Matacia and her husband, Patrick Scanlon, of Novato, California; his son and daughter-in-law, Stephen and Cheryl Matacia, of Phoenix, Arizona; and his four step-grandchildren, Patrick, Bradley, Candace and Cambria., Ernie is survived by one older brother, Laurence, who resides in Guadalajara, Mexico., Ernie was preceded in death by his wife, Adele, daughter Evelyn ("Eva") M. F. Marvin Bridges VIRGINIA BEACH - Francis Marvin Bridges, born June 10, 1915 passed away Jan. 2, 2011, at his residence in Brighton Gardens. He was the husband of the late Allie Jo Brooks Bridges. Marvin was a World War II veteran and was known as the "Candy Man" for M&M Candies where he was vice president of Sales. Marvin will always remain a part of those fortunate enough to have known him. He is remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor and positive outlook on life. Marvin and Jo moved many times during their 72 years of marriage and home became Virginia Beach where they lived for more than 18 years. Marvin is survived by his two children, Judith Bridges Howard of Alexandria, Va., and David Marvin Bridges of Virginia Beach; two granddaughters, Tracy B. Gladys Gill Iddings, 82, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord, Tuesday, January 4, 2011, in Charlottesville, following a short illness., Born January 26, 1928, in Hinton, she was the daughter of the late Lewis E. and Minnie Bennett Gill., Mrs. Iddings moved to Richmond in 1946, where she worked at Sears and Roebuck until her retirement after 36 years of service and was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Richmond., Preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Archie V. Iddings, on July 10, 2003; three brothers, Robert Ray Gill in 1926, Corporal Harles D. Gill, who was declared Missing in Action December 2, 1950, in Korea, and was recovered 58 years after his death, and C.E. "Ted" Gill, who passed away on January 8, 1975., Mrs. Iddings is survived by her daughter, with whom she had made her home the past six months, Darla Iddings Minton and her husband, J. Harry Hurd VIRGINIA BEACH - Harry Leslie Morgan Hurd, 65, of the 1300 block of Little Neck Road, passed away Dec. 20, 2010. Born at Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, he resided in Virginia Beach. He was the son of Richard Harold Morgan Hurd and Grave Alshouse Hurd. He was predeceased by his wife, Patricia Chadwick Hurd; his parents; his brothers, Richard, Raymond, Roland, Rae Francis, and Daniel; and sisters, Mae Bocrie, Patricia Hurd, Barbara Hickey and Ruth Killingsworth. Mr. Hurd is survived by his loving daughter, Leslie Michelle Hurd; stepdaughter, Becky Ross and husband Wayne of Norfolk; and stepdaughter, Deborah Taylor of Bellows Falls, Vt. He is also survived by grandsons, Morgan Hurd and Richard Taylor and granddaughters, Jennifer and Sarah Ross. He is also survived by nieces, Laurie Duncan, Fallon Donelson, JoAnn Bocrie Sautler, Gloria Jean Buclatin, Sandra Woods, Peggy Vaughn and nephews, Christopher, Jimmy, and Ronald Hurd and Robert, Jerry, Jimmie and Stevie Bocrie. Mr. Hurd graduated from Frederick Military Academy. He was an avid fisherman. He served as a past vice president of the Little Neck Civic League. Mr. Hurd owned and operated Hurd's Home Improvements and was also part owner of the former Hurd's Seafood Restaurant. Mr. Hurd's memorial service is being coordinated for a later time with family and friends. James L. Christopulos Lt. Col. (Ret.) James L. Christopulos, 93, a native of Cheyenne, Wyoming, a resident of Charlottesville, died Friday December 31, 2010., In addition to his many professional achievements, he was a man who always placed family first, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather., Jim served in Europe as a combat engineer with VIII Corps and with the 28th Infantry Division when it was overrun by the Germans during the "Battle of the Bulge" in December 1944. He also served with the 24th Corps in Okinawa and Korea., Upon returning to Cheyenne, Wyoming, from service in Europe and the Pacific after World War II, he met N. Beth Wilson, who was on the staff of the Wyoming State Adjutant General. They were married in Cheyenne, May 23, 1947., Christopulos transferred his Army Engineer Commission to the Air Force in 1949. During his tenure with the Air Force, he served in various capacities. He was Chief of Engineer Planning at 12th Air Force Headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany, from July 1950 to July 1953, where he directed the planning and design of seven new air bases in West Germany. He served in a similar capacity with Air Defense Command Headquarters in Colorado Springs, Colorado, from July 1953 to July 1956, where he was responsible for the establishment of the Command's "Radar Umbrella" in the continental United States and Canada, up to the Arctic Circle., From 1956 until 1961, Jim was the Chief of the Strategic Missile Branch at Air Force Headquarters in the Pentagon, establishing the sitting of the ICBM arsenal, which included the Atlas, Titan and Minuteman ICBM launch complexes. From July 1961 to July 1964, he served as the Director of Engineering Projects Division at Pacific Air Force Headquarters in Honolulu, Hawaii. From July 1964 until his retirement in July 1966, he was director of the Facilities Maintenance Division at Strategic Air Command (SAC) Headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska., Following his retirement from the Air Force, Jim received an appointment as Chief Engineer and Senior Environmental Engineer Advisor on Environmental Hazards at the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). He served in this capacity until he retired, for the second time, in 1986., During his service with HUD, he developed explosion and thermal radiation safety standards which were used in determining the safe siting of the HUD projects near operations handling chemicals and petrochemicals of an explosive or fire-prone nature. He developed departmental construction standards for locating HUD projects in the vicinity of toxic wastes and radioactive materials such as radon; and he represented HUD on the White House Radiation Science Panel under the administrations of Presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan., Following Jim's retirement from HUD, he received eight awards, including a letter of commendation from President Reagan. He is listed in Who's Who in Government., Jim was a member and an officer of the AHEPA, a National Greek American organization; the American Legion, the Retired Officers Association, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, and an active alumnus of his college fraternity, Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE)., Survivors include his beloved wife, Beth, of Charlottesville; his daughters, Dr. Diana K. John M. Birsch Sr. VIRGINIA BEACH - John Millard "Jack" Birsch Sr. went to meet the Lord Jan. 4, 2011 at the age of 75. He graduated from Maury High School and attended Virginia Tech. In 1964, Jack founded Birsch Chemicals, which is now operated as Birsch Industries. He continued contributing to the company until his recent illness. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Gladstone and Kitty Birsch; his father-in-law, Everette Thurman; and his brother-in-law, Rodney Shields. Kathryn C. Hobbs NORFOLK - Kathryn C. "Kitty" Hobbs, 87, went to be with the Lord Jan. 5, 2011. Kitty was a native of Chowan County, North Carolina, a member of Kempsville Baptist Church for more than 50 years, and a retired bookkeeper from Greenwich Supply Company. During her retirement she used her bookkeeping skills at Wright-Way plumbing through age 86. She was predeceased by her late husband of 51 years, E.C. Hobbs; her parents, Jehu and Annie Copeland; and brothers and sisters, Merton, Kesler, Marjorie, Edith, Hubert, Harold and Delton. Survivors include her son and his wife, Jerry and Ginger Hobbs; their daughters and spouses, Kathryn and Fred Sims, Kimberly and John Wright and Angela and Jason Deitz.; four great- grandchildren, Andrew, Corbin, Joseph and Patricia who will greatly miss their beloved Mema; and many nieces and nephews. Lawrence M. Raines Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Lawrence M. Raines Jr., 71, of the 3800 block of Marlin Bay Court, died Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011 in a local hospital. He was a native of Toledo, Ohio and lived in Hampton Roads most of his life. He was the son of the late Lawrence M. Raines Sr. and Doris Henricy Raines and was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Funk Raines. Mr. Raines attended Sacred Heart Catholic School, Norfolk Catholic High School, Class of 1954 and the University of Virginia and graduated from the Darden School of Business with a masters in business administration. He was the retired owner of Raines Communications, a marketing and advertising firm. He was a member of the Ocean Park Civic League. Survivors include his wife of 15 years, Betty Carol Eberhardt Raines of Virginia Beach; his daughters, Gwendolyn Raines Lewis and her husband Clayton of Gastonia, S.C., Linda Raines Belhorn, M.D. and her husband Thomas Belhorn, M.D., of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and his son, Lawrence M. Raines III, M.D., and his wife Ann Raines, M.D., of Chapel Hill; and six grandchildren, Christopher, Stephanie, Laura, Melissa, Elizabeth and Samuel. Leonidas Johnson CHESAPEAKE - Mr. Leonidas "Lee" Johnson of Cullen Avenue, passed Jan. 3, 2011 while a patient in Chesapeake General Hospital. He was born in Norfolk, on Jan. 20, 1938 to Leonidas L. and Lillie Mae Tidwell Johnson. Lee served his country in the United States Army for 22 years, achieving the rank of staff sergeant. In 1977, he retired and returned home to the Tidewater area. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church where he served on the Trustee Board, the Usherboard and the Male Chorus. Lee was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Edward Johnson and Gerald Johnson. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Cherry Johnson of Chesapeake; one daughter, Deborah Boothe (Morris) of Courtland, Va.; two sons, Val Antonio "Tony" Stevens (Janice), Jerome Wadell Grier of Norfolk; two brothers, Elson V. Johnson Sr. (Ella) of Chesapeake, James A. Johnson (Ivy) of Sterling, Va.; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many other relatives. Margaret Henderson Williams MEADOWVIEW, Va. On Jan. 3, 2011, Mrs. Margaret Henderson Williams joined her loving husband, Kenneth N. Williams, in a new journey with the Lord. Some of her greatest joys late in life were volunteering at Johnston Memorial Hospital, Faith in Action, and the Food Bank. She was a member of the Hayters Gap Senior Citizens. She also faithfully attended Fellowship Baptist Church. Her ultimate passion was being outside in her garden, which she generously shared all that she harvested. Her life was her family and she was an extremely devoted, nurturing, and loving wife, mom and nannie. Her purpose in life was to care for those she loved and she was a blessing to her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life, Kenneth N. Williams; her sister, Helen Sillix and husband Floyd; brothers, D.P. Henderson and wife Wanda, Herschel Henderson and wife Evelyn; and sister-in-law, Christina Henderson. Margaret "Peggy" Rudd, 74, of Colonial Heights, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011., Born in Jamaica, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Aloisius and Evelyn Van Nostrand Fenn. The wife of a career Marine, she lived both east and west, and raised two children with and without her husband, during times of deployment. Peggy was a member and past Worthy Matron of Alpha Chapter No. 1, Order of the Eastern Star, a member and past Royal Matron of Colonial Heights Court No. 10, Order of the Amaranth, a member and past Grand Royal Matron of the Grand Court of Virginia, Order of the Amaranth. She was a past Supreme Royal Matron of the Supreme Council Order of the Amaranth Inc., and the only person from Virginia to ever hold that office., She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Claude T. Margaret Donnell Watkins Margaret Donnell Watkins, of Charlotte Court House, passed away peacefully on Jan. 5, 2011, surrounded by her wonderful and loving caregivers, and has joined her voice in the heavenly choir. Born Sept. 22, 1949, in Roanoke, Margy was the daughter of David Comfort Watkins and Margaret Smith Watkins. She is survived by her mother; her siblings, David Comfort Watkins Jr. and wife, Pam, Elizabeth Watkins Carson and husband Carter, and James Clement Watkins and wife, Allyson: her nieces and nephews, Allison Watkins Pillow and husband, Jeff, Emily Watkins Hamlett and husband Gary, David Comfort Watkins, III, Carrington Leigh Watkins, Scott Carter Carson, Isabel Wysor Carson, Mary Margaret Watkins, and Robert Wease Watkins; one grand-niece, Sidney Clifton Hamlett; and a host of adoring cousins and other loved ones, including the Starlets, and the Red Hot Tamales. Margy graduated from St. Catherine's School in Richmond, and Queen's College in Charlotte, N.C., with a degree in music. She served on the boards of The Hampden-Sydney Music Festival and The Commonwealth Chorale, as Clerk of Session for Village Presbyterian Church, and as a member of the Charlotte County Master Gardeners. Margy had a remarkable affinity for the good things in life, and she engaged and she especially enjoyed leading others in a broad range of pleasurable and intellectual pursuits. She loved church, family, singing and listening to music, traveling, scuba diving, skiing, gardening, reading, cooking, and good wine. Margy also had a second and highly successful career as a doting aunt. Margy leaves a compelling legacy of faith, optimism, strength, courage, and grace. Even in the air, Mark would occasionally surprise neighbors with a fly-over in his powered paraglider in the skies of Albemarle County., Through to the end, the same quality of character he impressed upon his business associates and customers was well known among those closest to him. Nancy A. Bannon VIRGINIA BEACH - Nancy A. Bannon, 71, passed away Jan. 2, 2011. She was born April 30, 1939 in Elesmere, N.Y., to parents Alberta and George Quinlan of Pittsfield, Mass. She attended Bethlehem High School in Delmar, N.Y., before graduating from Pittsfield High School in 1957. After graduating from Berkshire Business College, Nancy began working in General Electric Company's Ordinance Division until 1962 when she married her loving husband of 47 years, John E. Bannon, who passed away last summer. Nancy is survived by her son, John Eric Bannon and his wife Michele; daughter, Brooke Christine Fowler and her husband Geoffrey and grandchildren John "Jake" Bannon, Nicholas Bannon, and Evan Fowler, who all remember what a wonderful mother and grandmother she was to her family. She is also survived by two sisters, Sharon Parchinski and her husband Tony, Patricia Bertocci and her husband Peter; and her brother, Scott Quinlan; as well as nieces, Haven Parchinski, Amy Quinlan, Mekala and Avery Bertocci; and nephew, Derek Parchinski. Nancy loved gardening, playing bridge with friends, and attending craft shows. She was known for her beautifully landscaped yard, flair for decorating, and her amazing home-cooking. Park Drive, Petersburg, Va., Steve was born July 14, 1970, to Mrs. Adrienne Robinson Batts and the late Steve A. Batts Sr. He attended Petersburg Public Schools and was a 1988 graduate of Petersburg High School. He also attended Hampton University before joining the Unites States Air Force in 1990., Steve deligently served his country for four years. He also served in Operation Desert Storm and was accomplished as a C135 transport crew chief. Walter G. Ingerski Walter G. Ingerski, age 97, born July 21, 1913 in Minonk, IL who had a 37 year career with the Federal Government and then accepted a position as Director of the State Universities Civil Service System for the State of Illinois in 1972 and retired after 30 years in May 2002, died January 5, 2011 at Culpeper Regional Hospital, Va. Mr. Ingerski was a life member of the Knights of Columbus., Mr. Ingerski lived in Culpeper, Va. since 2004 and was formerly of Champaign, IL where he lived with his deceased wife of 62 years, Doris. He is also survived by his son, Walter William and daughters-in-law, Linda and Tina. Also survived by five grandchildren, Stephen, Lisa, Josh, Emily and Matthew and two great-grandchildren, Jaidyn and Caine, sister-in-law, Josephine Ingerski, nieces and nephews and numerous friends. Wendell Reid CHESAPEAKE - Wendell Reid, 76, of the 2900 block of Candlewood Circle, passed Jan. 4, 2011. Born Sept. 11, 1934, Wendell was a retired Longshoreman with the ILA Local 1248 in Norfolk for more than 38 years. Wendell was a member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church, where he served on the Senior Usher Board and was the church sexton. Wendell is survived by his wife, Cecelia A. Reid; three daughters, Glenda Flood (Anthony), Sharon Fondern and Deirdre Williams (Clarence); five sons, Wendell Reid Jr., Vernon Reid (Linda), Dedric Reid (Tetia), Larome Reid and Von Reid; one sister, Hazel Seeberry; one brother, Fleetwood Reid (Nancy); 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. William Euclid Carnes Jr., born April 6, 1968, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at Carolinas Medical Center., Born in Petersburg, Va., William moved to Charlotte, N.C., with his mother and stepfather in 1982. He was creative and artistic, possessed a wonderful sense of humor, and loved camping, gardening, and all outdoors., He is survived by his son, Jacob Elias Carnes; daughter, Ana Staff; and his longtime sweetheart, Laura Staff, all of Charlotte; his mother, Barbara Ritchie Scruggs of Charlotte; father, Bill Carnes of Richmond, Va.; and brothers, Steven L. Hughes of Charlotte and Russell E. "Bill", William Francis Farquhar William Francis "Bill" Farquhar, age 95, of Bristow, passed away January 4th, 2011 at INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital., Born September 30th, 1915 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Arthur Farquhar, Sr., and Julia Brooke Farquhar. On December 27th, 1949 in Norfolk, Va., he married the former Margaret Virginia WanDelken, who preceded him in death., Simply known to his family and friends as Bill, he graduated from Gonzaga High School in Washington, D.C. and later attended college in West Virginia. He was a Veteran of the United States, , serving during, , with the Battery B, 237th AAA in the South Pacific, and because of Bill's leadership following the War, the Batter B Company, was one of the only groups that continued to meet annually. This reunion was held several times in the Manassas area., Bill began his career as an Athletic Director on August 1st, 1940 at Linton Hall School, and proudly served in this capacity for over 70 years. He also taught English as a second language, and conducted many summer camps over his years of service. He was a faithful member of the Manassas Host Lions Club, where he was a Life and Charter member from the club beginnings on July 26th, 1947. He was the Past President of the club from 1953 to 1954, Committee Chairman for the Groundhog Supper from 1993 to 1995; he was a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow award, the Club's Tail Twister from 1995 to 2010; and the Advisor of the Linton Hall Leo Club from its inception. Bill was the last remaining Charter Member of the Knights of Columbus, George Brent Council, #5332. Bill took his First Degree on April 4, 1961. He was Grand Knight from 1963 to 64, and was the past Faithful Navigator of Commodore John Barry Assembly. He was a mentor of many past Grand Knights and Past Faithful Navigators. He taught two generations of Knight's the importance of living life according to the tenants of our faith, and as an Oblate of St. Benedict to live life according to The Rule of Benedict., He was preceded in death by one brother, Arthur "Butch" Farquhar. Survivors include his loving daughter, Rosemary Farquhar of Linden; and two grandchildren, Angela Render Page and her husband Brian of North Carolina; and Charles A. Render of Bristow; and one nephew, Edward A. William Oliver Kaushagen, U.S.M.C., age 36, of Tinley Park, IL passed away Tuesday, December 28, 2010., He was born in Alexandria, Va., and raised in Manassas, Va. He graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School in 1992. Staff Sgt. Kaushagen has served in the, for 14 years. He is a combat veteran of Iraq. He played soccer for the Richmond Kickers, in the USISL Select League. He was an avid sports fan and his favorite team was the Washington Redskins. Woodrow Wilson Fanning CLEVELAND, Tenn. Woodrow Wilson Fanning, 93, passed away Mon day, Jan. 3, 2011, following a brief illness. Born in Fayetteville, Tenn., to the late William and Ellie Jeffries Fanning, he was the youngest of 14 children. After graduating high school, he received a BS degree from MTSU in 1940 and began a teaching career in Trion, Ga., where he became principal of Trion High School. He also received his masters degree in teaching at Peabody College for Teachers. He enlisted in the Air Force during, and served in Europe as a pilot in a P47 Fighter Group from 1942-1946, earning a, . After the war, he attended, from in Chicago and was awarded a masters degree in hospital administration. Mr. Fanning went on to become a CEO of Bristol Memorial Hospital in Bristol Virginia-Tennessee from 1958-1983. While in Bristol, he was a member of the Bristol, and held the office of president in 1969. He also was a member of the Tennessee Hospital Association, serving as a board member from 1972-1979, holding office as president in 1974. He also served as president of the Upper East Tennessee Hospital Council. After retirement, he moved to Cleveland, Tenn. There he resided with his wife until his death. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Irene Reynolds Fanning; three children, Sarah Fanning of Sedona, Ariz., Dr. David Fanning of Memphis, Tenn., and Dianne Jeffries of Kingsport, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Alaina Fanning, Alex Willey and Aaron Willey; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, in the chapel of Ralph Buckner Funeral Home with the Reverend Bryant Brown officiating. Interment will follow in Hilcrest Memorial Gardens, with military honors. Paul Fanning, Rex Vaughn, Bill Ventress, Tom Gray, Alex Willey and Aaron Willey will serve as pallbearers. Yvonne Gaines Mason, Yvonne Gaines Mason, 88, of Charlottesville, died peacefully on Saturday, January 1, 2011. She was born on March 29, 1922, in Charlotte Country, Virginia., She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, one sister, and her husband, Jesse Mason., She is survived by her nieces and nephews and many friends., Yvonne was lovingly and gratefully employed for many years by the Sigma Phi Fraternity along with her husband, Jesse, as a cook. She was like a family member of the Forrest and Helen Towe family for many years. She played a big role in raising their sons, Darden and Jim., She was a member of Chapter 43, Order of the Eastern Star. After suffering a stroke, she resided at the Cedars for the past few years. Their kindness and care for her is most appreciated as well as the care and compassion of Hospice of the Piedmont.
