Marion Hibben Phelps Hamar of Charlottesville died on January 5, 2011., Marion was born on October 30, 1927, in Puerto Castilla, Honduras, the third daughter of Dr. Marion "Bruce" and Azelie Hibben Phelps of Lowville, New York. Marion was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, George David Hamar; and her daughter, Kathryn Hamar Godburn., She is survived by four children, Michael B. Hamar of Norfolk, Virginia, Suzanne H. Cassidy of Charlottesville, Virginia, Janie H. Roy of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and G. David Phelps Hamar of Keswick, Virginia; and 10 grandchildren including Lauren, Peter and Victoria Hamar, Kristin and Matthew Godburn, Eric and Kelly Roy, Tyler and Andrew Cassidy, and Kate Hamar. Marion is also survived by two sisters, Mary Alice Isachsen of Troy, New York, and Ann Lopushinsky of Syracuse, New York; three nieces and nephews; a daughter-in-law, Leila Fiery Hamar; two sons-in-law, James Cassidy and Gary Roy; and one granddaughter-in-law, Jenny Roy., Marion, whose father was the medical director for United Fruit Company, spent her idealic childhood in a virtual adventure novel, filled with tales of life aboard steam ships and in the jungles of Central America. After being tutored in the Tropics, Marion graduated from Lowville Academy in 1945 and from Syracuse University in 1949, where she met her future husband. Marion then pursued graduate work at Cornell University., Marion was married on June 3, 1950, in Lowville, New York, and settled on a farm outside Syracuse, New York, where she raised her family and an extensive array of pets including dogs, cats, horses and a variety of other animals, to which her devotion was legendary. She and her family later moved to Virginia Beach before most recently moving to Charlottesville, Virginia. Marion's summer home on Brantingham Lake in the Adirondacks always held a special place in her heart and she enjoyed her last happy stay there in summer of 2010., While principally devoted to her family and children, Marion also pursued an active and dedicated professional life in Cytopathology where she was known for both her very high technical standards as well as her kind interpersonal skills with colleagues. Marion also diligently maintained her family's business interests in Honduras and Panama, with the family's interest in Cerveceria Hondurena, S.A., now in its 101st year., Always active, Marion enjoyed many outdoor activities including water and snow skiing, boating and gardening as well as walking her dogs on the beach. She was a voracious reader who rarely could be found without a book in her hand., Descended from old Connecticut Yankee and New Orleans families, Marion was a wonderful combination of all the best characteristics associated with both regions. While Marion enjoyed relative privilege, she was modest and never forgot the less fortunate, supporting numerous charities for children, animals and the environment and she embodied the ideal in civility, kindness and Christian values often strived for, but very rarely achieved. She was quietly, but very deeply devoted to her Catholic faith. Marion was quite simply extraordinarily kind, fair, empathetic and considerate and her calmness and gentleness could always brighten the day of her family, friends, colleagues, pets and others. Marion's complete devotion to her children and grandchildren was also extraordinary., A funeral mass will be held 1 p.m. Saturday January 15, 2011, at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Charlottesville, Virginia. May B. Johnson NORFOLK - May B. Johnson went to sleep Friday, Jan. 8, 2011 and did not wake up Saturday morning in the 97th year of her life for breakfast and daily ritual of 20 pain pills and five eye drops. Her son, Ronald R. Johnson and daughter-in-law Emma gave her around the clock care for almost six years. Medicare and Tricare paid for prescriptions and professional services from Health Care Services, (Gentiva, Kelly's, Genesys, and Personal Touch Hospice) and home visits from doctors. They expressed concern and empathy for her pain but she would always tell them what her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ taught in that famous prayer, "Let your will be done on earth as it is in heaven." Then she would have them read Isaiah 33:24, "No more sickness," and Revelation 21:4, "...that he would wipe all tears from their eyes, and there would be no more death, sorrow, and pain have passed away." As time got closer to death she knew it would not be long. So she would remind herself of II Corinthians 4:18, "To keep your eyes on the prize." She knew that she would sleep until that future time, under God's kingdom, that the words of Job 14:15 would apply to her, "You will call and I will answer." When she is resurrected on earth. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses for 62 years. May enjoyed teaching people the bible. How happy she was when she helped her mother and sisters to see how serious it is to have a good name with God. So they dedicated their lives to Him. In her door to door ministry she also helped people to get an accurate knowledge of God and Jesus Christ his only begotten son as found in John 17:3. As for her secular work, she was a barber. After practicing on her husband and son for 15 years she loved it so much, she went to barber school. After a 1000 hour course she finished it in 1959 and got her Master Barber License for Virginia and opened her first shop on Thayer Street in Chesterfield Heights in the 1960s. Then to Lafayette Boulevard and Chesapeake Boulevard. She was often amused when more than one man would come into her shop and see a woman barber. When they would go home their wives would say, "Who cut your hair?" Answer, a woman barber. The next time the wife would come in and tell her, "It was the best haircut he ever had." Word got around. Finally, in 1985 she had to give up barbering because of a torn rotator cuff that could not be repaired. She is survived by her son, Ronald R. Johnson and wife Emma; two sisters, Louise McCormack of Escondido, Calif., and Ruby Asbury and husband John of San Diego. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Jan. 15, at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 3662 Humboldt St., Norfolk VA 23513. MELVIN FRED HARMAN FLOYD-On June 15, 1919, Martin and Cordelia Weddle Harman were blessed with their eleventh and final child. They named their son Melvin Fred, and all his life everyone would call him Fred. He grew up on Bunky Run near the banks of Burks Fork Creek in Willis, Virginia, close to where his ancestors settled in the 1780's. He worked hard from a young age, learning to plow the fields with horses by the time he was five (or so he said). His father taught him how to build caskets and furniture and to "doctor" animals. For many years people from miles around would call on him for help with their sick cattle. Fred, like many others in his family, had a wicked sense of humor. Fred left the family farm during the great Depression to work for the Civilian Conservation Corps and to help construct the Blue Ridge Parkway. This was good preparation for being called to active duty during, . He served as a military policeman at the Norfolk Naval Base. Upon his return home, he married his sweetheart, Minnie Belcher, on September 16, 1944. They were blessed with 66 years together. They lived for many years only two miles from Fred's family home place. In 1989 they moved closer to "town" (Floyd). Fred worked on his small farm growing crops and milking cows while also working for the State Highway Department, Federal Park Service, and in his retirement years, assisting his nephew Carlin Maberry at Maberry Funeral Home. He was a member of the American Legion and Odd Fellows for many years. On December 29, 2010, with his family by his side, Fred was called home to Jesus. Besides his parents Fred is predeceased by all his siblings, Arlie Tobler, Annie Maberry, Mary Lee Hodges, Nancy Smith, Ruth Weddle, Harvey, Otho, Burnett, Charlie, and Harry. He is survived by: his daughter and son-in-law, Hilda and Howard Dickerson of Willis; son, Norman Harman and fianc‚ Cherie Horton of Riner; grandchildren, Jennifer Tunstall of Willis and Benjamin Webb of Floyd. His great-grandchildren Jared and Evan Richardson and Carter Tunstall brought him much joy. He was delighted that Carter inherited his sense of humor. Fred is also survived by: many nieces and nephews including his nephew and good friend Hubert Harman; his sisters-in-law Monnie Lovins of Christiansburg, Lula Harris of Radford, and Pauline Bolt of Meadows of Dan. He had wonderful caregivers Michelle Smith, Cherie Horton, Dr. Susan Osborne, and the staff at Skyline Nursing Home. He was blessed with a loving church family at Little River Baptist Church. Funeral service was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 2, 2011 at Maberry Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Allan Vass officiating. Interment followed at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Willis. The family received friends from 5 to 7 pm on Saturday, January 1, 2011at the funeral home. Fred will be greatly missed by all who knew him, but we know he will be busy making the angels laugh. Until we meet again Daddy, we love you. Arrangements by Maberry Funeral Home, Floyd. Online condolences may be made by visiting |

Ralph H. Lane MAPLE - Ralph H. Lane, 82, left his home on this earth he cherished so dearly Jan. 11, 2011. Ralph was the youngest of nine children, born to Annie Laura Harper and William Joseph Lane Sept. 1, 1928. He was born and raised in Rocky Mount, N.C. Among one of the many stories we loved to hear, was how he became the state champion in marble shooting. In 1943, with the help of his mother, he joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 14. Before the age of 17, he had fought in seven major battles. He served in the U.S. Navy through the duration of World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars. The love and passion he felt for his country will forever be instilled in his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. When we hear the Star Spangled Banner, our hands will reach for our hearts and Daddy will always be there with us. When we hear "America the Beautiful," we will remember singing it with Daddy in the car. When Kate Smith sings "God Bless America," we will remember Daddy telling us no one could sing it like Kate. Eleven years later, he returned to Rocky Mount and married our Mama, the late Willa Lane. Ralph would spend the next 12 years serving our country in the U.S. Navy.
