Adkins, Jack Stacy

Jack Stacy Adkins, 76, of Claytor Lake, Va., was called to join his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on November 28, 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Alta Adkins; and his twin brother, Joe Lacy Adkins. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Nancy Bowe Adkins; and his children, B. Donita Adkins, of Claytor Lake, and Dr. Allan R. Adkins and his wife, Tracy, of Kernersville, N.C. He is also survived by his granddaughters, Erin, Emily, and Hannah Adkins, of Cedar Bluff, Va.; his sister-in-law, Clarita Adkins, of Blue Ridge, Va.; his nephew, David J. Adkins, of Blue Ridge, Va.; and his beloved pets, Fergie, Charlie, and Pasha. Jack graduated from William Fleming High School in 1951, and then entered the Army during the Korean War. After the military, he graduated as an Industrial Engineer from Virginia Tech in 1957. He was an avid reader, chess player, hunter, fisherman, sailor, and inventor. DeVilbiss Funeral Home in Radford will be handling funeral arrangements. The family will be receiving friends and family from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, December 1, 2008, at DeVilbiss Funeral Home. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at 1 p.m. at Radford Worship Center with the Dr. Hal Adams officiating. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park in Salem. ANDREWS, Virginia S., 87, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 26, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lewis Andrews; and son, William Nash Andrews. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Andrews Ayers and husband, David, Judith Andrews Brooking and husband, Wilson, and Mary Lou Andrews; sister, Doris Strange Andrews; grandchildren, Danny Cubbage, Laurie Cubbage Walker, Sloan Ayers and George Andrews; and six great-grandchildren. Susan D. Angelo VIRGINIA BEACH - Susan Diane Angelo, 45, passed away peacefully in her home Nov. 28, 2008. While always remaining positive, Susan courageously battled brain cancer for 14 years. She was a 1981 graduate of Kempsville High School and a 1985 graduate of ODU. She is survived by her parents, Frank M. and Carolyn Angelo; six brothers and sisters, Stephany Carter (Randy), Michael, Chris, Tony and Kevin Angelo and Julie Cyr; five nieces and nephews, Stacy Bluestein, Brian Lueker, Ashley Angelo, Allison Carter and Rachael Pritt. BOCOCK, Frederic Scott, died November 24, 2008, in Richmond, Va., at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Bryan Bocock; and his four children, Natalie Friend Bocock Turnage, married to Mark Timothy Turnage, John Holmes Bocock, married to Nora Miller Brookfield, Alexander Hamilton Bocock, married to Amy Elizabeth Sullivan, and Marianne Meade Bocock Doyle, married to Brian Courtland Doyle. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Buford Bocock Hitz and was preceded in death by his sister, Bessie Friend Bocock Carter. He had 14 grandchildren, Jonathan Kincheloe Turnage, Mary Buford Turnage, Helen Bryan Turnage, Frederic Loren Bocock Turnage, Willis Henry Bocock, Marianne Robinson Bocock, Nora Brookfield Bocock, Frederic Scott Bocock, James Sullivan Bocock, Mary Lowrey Bocock, Elisabeth Bryan Bocock, Elisabeth Scott Doyle, Courtland James Doyle, and Alexander Bocock Doyle. Freddie graduated from William Fox Elementary School, Binford Middle School, Episcopal High School in 1950, and the University of Virginia in 1954. After two years of service in the United States Navy, he began his 51-year tenure with Scott and Stringfellow where he was a partner. He served as Vice Chairman of Scott and Stringfellow, Inc. from 1974 until 2001. He was President of the Richmond Memorial Hospital Board and served as a founding member of the Board of Trustees of the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation. He was President of the Men's Advisory Board of the Virginia Home and served on the Boards of the IVNA-Instructive Visiting Nurses Association and St. Catherine's School. He also served on the Vestry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Seven Society of the University of Virginia. A service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 815 East Grace Street, Richmond Va., at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 1, 2008, followed by a graveside service at Hollywood Cemetery. Fred was a carpenter most of his life. Fred attended Fort Lee Baptist Church and was a life member of the Richmond Motorcycle Club. Additionally, he was the last of 11 siblings. Fred was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps. Nov 30, 2008 The funeral for Charles Lester "Junior" Cook Jr., 59, of 18 Massie Drive, Fieldale, who died Nov. 27, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be at noon on Monday at Reach Out Apostolic Tabernacle in Axton. Bishop Lorenzo Hall will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in the Penn family cemetery in Fieldale. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to noon on Monday at the church and other times at the home in Fieldale and at the home of his mother at 291 Harris St., Martinsville. He was born in Penhook on Aug. 8, 1949, to Elsie Jane Thomas Cook and Charlie Lester Cook Sr. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Kim N. Cook. He attended Carver High School and was a private in the Army. He was a textile worker at Tultex with 12 years of service. He also worked for Roy Stone Transfer, Staples Trucking and Hodge Trucking. He attended Reach Out Apostolic Tabernacle. Surviving, in addition to his mother, are his wife, Rochelle Penn Cook; a son, Andre L. Cook of Shreveport, La.; a daughter, Toccara R. Clark Jr., Linwood Hardy

CLARK, Linwood Hardy Jr., died on November 28, 2008, in Lexington, Ky. He was born in Richmond, Va., on November 19, 1933 and was the son of Linwood Hardy Clark Sr. and Bernice Boyden Clark. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Donnetta Devine Clark; two sons, Linwood Hardy Clark III (Lisa) of Smyrna, Ga., William Devine Clark (Bonnie ) of Charlotte, N.C.; and three grandchildren, Aiden Palmer Clark of Smyrna, Hannah Elizabeth Clark and William D. Clark Jr. of Charlotte. Mr. Clark graduated from the Virginia Military Institute in 1956 as a "distinguished military student" and received a commission as second lieutenant, U.S. Army. He attended and graduated from the Armor Officer Basic School at Fort Knox, Ky. Upon completion of his tour of duty in the U.S. Army, he served in the Virginia Guard National Guard and held the rank of captain at the time of his resignation. He was later recognized by the Secretary of Defense for his services during the "Cold War." In 2002, he was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Kentucky. For 50 years, Mr. Clark either owned or served as an executive in furniture manufacturing companies in North Carolina, Virginia and Kentucky. He traveled extensively to South America, Canada, Mexico, and many European countries in that capacity. Most recently, he was Founder and Owner of Liss & Company, LLC in Lexington, Ky. The Bennett Funeral Home on Cutshaw Ave. in Richmond, Va. will handle the final arrangements. Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3, followed by the service. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. Mrs. Curry was a deaconess, Eastern Star, Court of Colanthe, and previously served on the finance committee at Mount Zion. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She cared deeply for family and friends. Mrs. Curry is survived by her daughter, Patricia A. Prichett; son, Duain R. DANIELS, Roy Manley, 68, of Richmond, went to the arms of Jesus on Thursday, November 27, 2008. He is survived by two sisters, Sue Daniels and Dian Anderson; two brothers, John Daniels Jr. and David Daniels and his wife, Tammy. Roy is survived by his dearest cousin, Roy Lee Sanson and his wife, Brenda; and by his nieces and nephews, Deborah Daniels Dip, Randy Daniels, John Anderson and his wife, Joanna, Sarah Daniels, Diana Daniels, Mary Brooks, Tabitha Daniels, Rachel Daniels and Jason Daniels. Roy worked for Shoney's for 39 years, where he became a vice president. He loved Jesus, the Word, his work, and mostly the people surrounding him, his family, and his career. Roy will be dearly missed for he loved each one of us as if we were his very own. We are all better for knowing him. DIXON, Mattie Mae Pickett "Mama D", of Beaverdam, formerly of Richmond, Va., passed away peacefully on November 29, 2008 in her home on her 97th birthday, with daughters by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, Andrew B. Dixon. She leaves to cherish her memory two children, M. Lois (Margo) Cooper and her husband, Kelly, of Quinton and Frances Tipton and her husband, Robert (Red), of Beaverdam; three grandchildren, Maggie, Andrea, and Nicholas Tipton. She will be missed by Max, the family dog and her loving companion, who spent countless evenings keeping her feet warm. Mattie Mae was born in Durham, North Carolina. She came to Richmond to attend Nursing School at Retreat for the Sick, where she graduated in 1934 as a registered nurse. She retired from The Richmond Eye Hospital in 1975. Mattie Mae was an inspiration. Her family was blessed to closely share her final years. She shared values with us that only one of her generation would know. In her later years, she shared laughter and delight in some of the more simple aspects of life with everyone she met. The family is grateful to Odyssey, especially Connie, for always being there and guiding us through this journey. Also, we would like to extend a special thanks to Glenny for the love and care she provided. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the Atlee Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, Rt. 301 & Shady Grove Rd., Mechanicsville. Clynard Russell Frazier VIRGINIA BEACH - Clynard Russell Frazier passed away Nov. 27, 2008, in Sentara Leigh Hospital. He was born Aug. 26, 1915, in Guilford County, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Thomas Russell Frazier and Cora Pickett Frazier. Mr. Frazier was a local contractor and was instrumental in the construction of Cavalier Manor, Laurel Manor, Hilltop Manor and several other local developments. He was a 32nd degree Freemason. Mr. Frazier was an avid gardener and known far and wide for his home-cured country hams and ham biscuits. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Juanita Gaines Frazier; four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Mildred Jean Frazier of the home; his daughters, Geneva Frazier of Virginia Beach, Dolores Frazier Stakes of Roanoke, Va.; his sons, Thomas Russell Frazier and wife Linda, Steve Clark Frazier and wife Royce; and his stepson, Sherman Leslie Reed, all of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends Monday between 6 and 7:30 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel. Heffner, Paul Bernard

HEFFNER, Paul Bernard, 92, a resident of Brandermill Woods, Midlothian, died on Saturday, November 22, 2008 after a short illness. He is survived by a beloved daughter, Margaret Stair "Mollie" Hummel; esteemed son-in-law, Ray O. Hummel III; greatly loved grandchildren, Carolyn Ruth Hummel and Paul Joseph Hummel, all of Richmond. He was born in Lancaster County, Pa., graduated from Allentown High School and Franklin and Marshall College. Following his father's transfer to York, Pa. in 1936, he met Helen Louise. They became engaged a year later and married on June 17, 1939. Upon graduation from college, he joined a major oil company. Within a year, he was promoted and transferred to York, Pa. In 1943 he applied to the Navy for Officer Candidate School. After being commissioned Ensign, he was sent to Pearl Harbor and then to a division of small aircraft carriers as communications officer. He participated in the Lingayen Gulf and the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Several months after the Japanese surrender, he transferred to inactive duty status and returned home in June 1946. He joined the major oil company and after several promotions, was assigned in May 1948 to Richmond as manager for Virginia. He always had a desire to have his own business. The opportunity occurred in 1960 in Williamsburg, where he created Heffner Oils, Inc. and became a major oil company distributor. The business grew and prospered. With a wish to enjoy retirement and to travel the world, he and Helen Louise sold the business in 1978. While in Williamsburg, he was active in industry, church, civic affairs and establishing Williamsburg Landing. In early 1994, he and Helen Louise made the decision to return to Richmond to be near their daughter and family. Brandermill Woods became home. Inurnment will be at the Memorial Garden of the Brandermill Church, 4500 Mill Ridge Pkwy., Midlothian, 23112 on December 9 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Brandermill Church Memorial Fund or to a favorite charity.

The honor of Fellow, the highest honor awarded to an ASID member, was bestowed upon her in 1987. In 1990, she received the Designer of Distinction Award. In 2004, the Janet Kane Spirit Award was established in her honor, recognizing promising leadership and dedication within the profession. The son of the late Millard Bunch McFarland, Sr. and Clara Belle Kirby McFarland, he was born in Ellett, Virginia on March 24, 1928. As part of the four "J's" of Ellett, he was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph Suddeth McFarland, James Edward McFarland, and John Green McFarland. He also follows a sister in passing, Mildred Lucy McFarland Odom. "Mac", as he was fondly known, is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Elsie Peters McFarland. Other survivors are daughters, Judith Sutphin Wade, husband, Bland Wade, of Richmond, Va., Theresa McFarland Vance, of Johnson City, Tenn. and husband, Donald Vance, and Deborah McFarland Miles, and husband, Tony Miles, of Christiansburg, Va. Mac is further survived by sister-in-laws, Violet McFarland (Joe), Edna McFarland (James), Elsie McFarland (Johnny) and Ocie Gray Peters. MERIAN, Robert Arthur "Bob", 82, died Monday, November 24, 2008 at Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was a member of the Lake Of The Woods Church. Bob was born in Darjeeling, India on September 4, 1926 the son of missionaries, Vivian and Fred A. Merian. He is survived by his wife, Rosemarie; his sisters, Ruth and Hope; his brother, Walter; his sons, Steven, Thomas, and Robert; his grandchildren, Christina, Nathaniel, Shannon, Daniel, Jennifer, Claire, Shawn, Jason, Cedric, Marilyn, and Laetitia; his daughters-in-law, Denise, Elizabeth, and Benedicte. Bob graduated from Taylor University, and served God as a Missionary in India for the Assembly of God Church and the Far East Broadcasting Company. He was fluent in Hindi and Urdu. In 1960, he earned a Master's Degree in Communications from the University of Michigan, and in 1961 he joined the U.S. Department of States Information Agency. As a Diplomatic Foreign Service Officer, he served tours of duty in the Pakistan, Philippines, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, India, and Sierra Leon. He also served a tour in Washington, D.C. with the Voice Of America and finished this career in 1975 at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii as Military Liaison to CINCPAC. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, December 6 at The Church of the Good Sheppard Episcopal Church, Forest Hill Ave. at 43rd St., Richmond, Virginia 23225. Burial to be private. Nov 30, 2008 The funeral for Opaline Ousley Cox, 71, of 403 Starling Ave., Martinsville, who died Nov. 26, 2008, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Community Funeral Services Chapel of Ridgeway. The Rev. Dan Schilling will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today and other times at the home on Starling Avenue. She was born in Floyd County on Dec. 24, 1936, to Early Robert Ousley Sr. and Maggie Quesenberry Ousley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Edith Mae Cox; a brother, Early Robert Ousley Jr.; a grandchild; a great-grandchild; and a great-great-grandchild. She attended Victory Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Wiley E. Cox of the home; five daughters, Rebecca Thacker of Ridgeway, Carolyn Beal of Martinsville, Cindy Spence of Fieldale, Barbara Foster and Patricia Newton, both of Bassett; three sons, James David Burnett and Johnny Cox of Martinsville and Ronnie Cox of Axton; two sisters, Henrietta Lewis of Martinsville and Hazel Roberts of Allisonia; 26 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Pasco, Hansell Merrill

PASCO, Hansell Merrill, retired Richmond lawyer and last surviving member of the WWII U.S. Army General Staff, died at his home in Richmond on Friday, November 28, 2008. Merrill Pasco was born in Thomasville, Ga. on October 7, 1915, son of John and Katherine Merrill Pasco and grandson of United States Senator Samuel Pasco of Florida. He was the president and valedictorian of his 1933 high school class in Monticello, Fla., and played catcher on the school's state championship baseball team. He graduated from Virginia Military Institute in 1937 with academic distinction as a Cadet Captain and Regimental Adjutant. While a cadet, he received the Cincinnati Medal "for efficiency of service and excellence of character," set conference records in the 100 and 220 yard dashes and reached the finals of the 1936 Olympic trials. VMI selected Pasco for both its Athletic Hall of Fame and Distinguished Service Award. Pasco obtained his law degree from the University of Virginia Law School, graduating with academic distinction. He was a member of the DKE Fraternity, the Order of the Coif, Phi Delta Phi Honorary Fraternity and the Raven, Eli Banana and "Z" societies. In June 1940 Pasco began his law career in Richmond with the firm now known as Hunton & Williams. This was prior to his being called to active duty in February of 1941, where he served as an Assistant Secretary and later, Secretary of the War Department General Staff in Washington, D.C. from December 1941 until November 15, 1945. During this time he had a close and daily association with General George C. Marshall, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army. For his Army service with General Marshall, Pasco was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal. He was also made an honorary Officer of the Order of the Military Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire by King George VI. He was promoted to Colonel in the U.S. Army at the age of 29 when he became Secretary of the War Department General Staff in 1945. After his war service, Pasco returned to Hunton & Williams and helped build it into one of the South's premier law firms. He was the firm's managing partner for more than ten years in the 1960s and 1970s. He became Senior Counsel in 1980, but continued to serve as counsel for the Hot Springs Corporation, Stratford Hall, and Hollywood Cemetery until he fully retired in 2000. Pasco was active in the community. He served for two terms and was chairman of the State Council of Higher Education. He was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Protestant Episcopal Seminary for two four-year terms. He served as member and chairman of the VMI Foundation and a member of the Board of the George C. Marshall Foundation. He was a director, a member of the Executive Committee, Vice President and Counsel to Hollywood Cemetery for more than 40 years. He was a board member and chairman of the Children's Home Society of Virginia. He was instrumental in the organization of Chippenham Hospital and was a board member and counsel for a number of years. He was a board member of Christ Church School, chairman of the Board of St. Catherine's School, a trustee and vice president of the Church Schools in the Diocese of Virginia, a member of the Diocesan Missionary Society, and trustee of the Diocese of Virginia from 1966-2007. He was general counsel and secretary of Virginia Hot Springs, Inc. from 1972-2000 and was for many years counsel for the Robert E. Lee Memorial Foundation. He was a past president of the Richmond Rotary Club, a member of the Board of the Richmond YMCA, and a board member of the Commonwealth Club of Richmond. He was a member of the Country Club of Virginia and the Richmond German. In 1946 he joined St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, vestryman, Junior and Senior Warden, Chairman of its Endowment Fund, and member of the Board of St. Paul's Church Home. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Carrington Lancaster Pasco, and their four children, Hansell Merrill Pasco Jr. of Hilton Head, S.C., Dabney Lancaster Pasco and his wife, Laura, of Hot Springs, Va., Robert Lancaster Pasco of Strasburg, Va., Carrington Pasco Brown and her husband, Trigg, of Richmond, Va.; 13 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren; and his brother, John Pasco Jr. On Wednesday, December 3, there will be a private interment service at Hollywood Cemetery, followed by a memorial service at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Grace Street, Richmond, Va. at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the George C. Marshall Foundation, the VMI Foundation, St. Paul's Episcopal Church or the Westminster-Canterbury Foundation.

Nov 30, 2008 The funeral for Peter Kermit "PaPa" Draper, 92, of 101 Crestwood Court, Martinsville, who died Nov. 26, 2008, at his home, will be held at noon Monday at Fayette Street Christian Church. Nov 30, 2008 Richard Shane Townsend, 17, of 11 Riddle Court, Martinsville, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008 at Fort Sanders Sevier Medical Center, Sevierville, Tenn. He was born August 13, 1991, in Martinsville to Richard James Townsend and Hope Canupp Townsend. He had attended Martinsville High School and had been on the school wrestling team. He was of the Christian faith and attended Stone Memorial Christian Church. He was an organ donor through the University of Tennessee tissue bank. In addition to his parents of the home, surviving are a brother, Eric Christopher Townsend of Stoneville, N.C.; maternal grandparents, Frank and Helen Canupp of Martinsville; paternal grandparents, James and Alma Townsend of Martinsville; and paternal great0grandmother, Mary Johnson of Elizabethton, Tenn. Lita Therese Roberson, 72, resident of Richfield Retirement Center, Salem, passed suddenly Friday, November 28, 2008. A Chicago native, Roberson earned her masters in Ancient History from the University of Chicago. She enjoyed many Norwegian-American events and was a great patron of the arts. She most loved her Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin cabin and her grandchildren, Garth and Ransom Roberson, of Roanoke. She is predeceased by her parents, Thor and Osborg Gunderson, husband, Lt. Clyde E. Roberson, killed in action, 1958. She is also survived by her son, Clyde T. Roberson, of Roanoke and daughter-in-law, Amelia Roberson; and a cousin, Peder Madsen. Lita was a beautiful and educated woman and accomplished pianist, who loved nothing more than a good cup of black coffee and a slice of marzipan cake. Arrangements by John M. SPROUSE, Donal Juan "Don," age 78, passed away on November 22, 2008 after a long illness, with his loved ones at his side. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Barbara Gregory Sprouse; a daughter and two sons, of whom he was extremely proud. He is survived by one daughter, Donna Maria Brendt and her husband, Thomas F. Brendt, of Charlottesville. Two sons, Gregory David Sprouse and his wife, Kimberly, of Powhatan, and Kevin Douglas Sprouse and his wife, Jennifer Glave, of Windsor, Calif. Four grandchildren, Sean Michael and Kayce Lynn Sprouse, Jacob Aaron, and Sara Ruth Sprouse. He is also survived by his sister, Orletta Beavers of Roanoke. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carrington James Sprouse and Mary Kellison Sprouse; and two brothers, Carrington Elson Sprouse and James Melvin Sprouse. A Richmond native of Church Hill, he served in the U.S. Navy Seabees from 1947 to 1956. A retired Reynolds Metals supervisor at Bellwood Extrusion Plant, he enjoyed bowling for the company team, "The Untouchables". He and his wife were square dance enthusiasts for many years. Some of his most joyful hours were spent working in his organic garden. He will be remembered for his music and artistic ability and affable personality. A private memorial is being held within his immediate family.

STEWART, Virginia Wright Lankford, 89, a retired Richmond Public Schools teacher, died Thursday, November 13, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband, James LaFayette Stewart. She is survived by her children, Victoria S. Bethel and husband, David, and Bob Stewart and wife, Pattie; four grandchildren, Jacqueline Bethel, Bobby and Michael Carey Stewart and Bridget Crusan; one niece, two nephews, five great-nieces, two great-nephews, one great-great-nephew and one great-great-niece. Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of George Albert Lankford Sr. and Alice Carey Lankford of Capron, Va. She received her B.S. degree from Madison College (now James Madison University) in 1940. She taught school in Kempsville, Holland and Suffolk, Va. before coming to Richmond in 1952, where she taught until she retired in 1979. Prior to June 2000, Mrs. Stewart was a dedicated member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and an elder for two terms. She was an active worker with the Presbyterian Women, where she served as Circle Leader for many years. Since June 2000, she has been a member of Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church and active with the Presbyterian Women there. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m Saturday, December 6, at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church. Burial services will be private. Herman L. Thomas Jr. NORFOLK - Herman Lee "Bubba" Thomas Jr., 58, of the 1200 block of W. 27th St., passed away Nov. 24, 2008, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He was born April 17, 1950, to the late Bessie Mae Wood-Thomas and Herman Lee Thomas Sr. in Norfolk. He was educated in the Norfolk Public Schools and was a certified welder. He was employed with the Norfolk Naval Base for 21 years. Herman was a member of Freedom Church of God in Christ where he served as chairman of the Deacon Board, Male Usher Board, president of Pastor's Aide and Nursing Home Ministry. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Anna LaVern Thomas; two sons, David Lamont Thomas and Michael Lamont Thomas; nine siblings, Audrey Evonne Tarboro (John), David B. Thomas (Gloria), Francine Lanier (Kevin), Anita Thomas, Annette Willis (Tyrone), Emanuel Thomas (Elsie), Darryl Thomas (Bonita), LaCheryl Carrington (Woodrow) and Bonita McCray (Maurice); five grandchildren, David Lamont Harris, Michael Lamont Thomas, Tishera Harris, Theresa Johnson and Kenneth Wells; four aunts, Audrey Manley (Pastor Jake Manley), Thelma Parker, Esther Hardy and Cora Thomas; one uncle, Elijah Thomas; and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Metropolitan Funeral Service, 7246 Granby St. Pastor W. Aaron Robbins will officiate. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. Nov 30, 2008 Verneda Ann Dunner Hanscom, 57, of 345 Dorchester St., S. Boston, Mass., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at the Boston Medical Center. She was born in Stanleytown to the late Harlan Dunner and Nancy Jefferson Dunner. Surviving are two sisters, Rose Taylor and Virginia Azzara of Stanleytown; two brothers, John Dunner of Quincy, Mass., and Mike Dunner of Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service was held at the Plaster family cemetery in Patrick Springs with Director Kelly Ratcliff officiating. Pallbearers were Ratcliff, Junior Cassady, Dustin Osborn, Steve Perry, John Dunn and Mike Dunner. Community Funeral Services of Ridgeway was in charge of arrangements.

Wiggins, Thomas

Thomas E. Wiggins CHESAPEAKE - Thomas Eugene Wiggins, 84, born Aug. 12, 1924, in Pensacola, Fla., died Nov. 29, 2008, suddenly of a heart attack. He was predeceased by his parents, Fannie Suffian Wiggins and Richard Hilary Wiggins and two sons, Lynn Paul Wiggins and Thomas Richard Wiggins. Thomas served 28 years in the U.S. Navy as an aviator. He worked for 15 years as a college counselor at Dabney Lancaster Community College in Clifton Forge, Va. He was married to Dorothy Jane Richardson Wiggins for 64 years. He was an Eagle Scout and an avid contributor to many causes and charities. Thomas is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, William Eugene Wiggins and his wife Bonnie and Lee Scott Wiggins and his wife Georgette; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Thomas will be interred at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. DuVall; her mother, Kathryn Lavoie and husband, Allen Lavoie; father, Kenneth Ray Kirby and wife, Christine A. Kirby; two sisters, Kathryn Ellen Bullock and husband, Bryan, and Karisa Kirby. Also six nieces and nephews, and numerous friends. A special thank you to her aunt, Molly Pinner, for all of her love and care. Kristy was a Hanover County School bus driver.
