AMADOR, Jennifer Ruth, of Glen Allen, Va., passed away November 28, 2008. She was preceded in death by her father, Alfred Manfredi. She is survived by her husband, Mario Amador; sister-in-law, Anita Amador; mother, Sara Jane Manfredi; brother, Stephen Manfredi; two sisters, Nancy Walsh and Jessica McFaul; four nephews, Matthew, Thomas, Andrew and Jack; and a niece, Julia. Jennifer was a graduate of William & Mary and received her Masters from Rutgers University. She was an avid gardener and loved cooking, needlework and books. She will be truly missed by her family and friends. The family will receive friends at Bliley's-Staples Mill, 8510 Staples Mill Road, from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday, concluding with a prayer service. ANDREWS, Virginia S., 87, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 26, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Lewis Andrews; and son, William Nash Andrews. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Andrews Ayers and husband, David, Judith Andrews Brooking and husband, Wilson, and Mary Lou Andrews; sister, Doris Strange Andrews; grandchildren, Danny Cubbage, Laurie Cubbage Walker, Sloan Ayers and George Andrews; and six great-grandchildren. Tom enjoyed the many years he spent with the Hell's Point Golf Club. He also held memberships with Broad Bay Golf Club, Kiln Creek Golf Club and VSGA. Tom is survived by his wife, Judith Lynne Arehart; his daughter, Laura Lynn Arehart of San Diego, Calif.; his two sons, Kym Alexander Arehart and Andrew "Todd" Arehart, both of Virginia Beach; and three grandchildren, Kristin Ann Arehart, Brittany Ann Arehart and Jordan Alexis Arehart. Laverne Ayers SUFFOLK - Naomi Laverne Ayers, 85, of the 200 block of Spirit Circle East, died Nov. 27, 2008 in Suffolk. A native of Bellevue, Ky., she was the wife of Paul Ayers. She retired as a secretary to Dr. Harry D. Cox. Laverne was a member of New Creation United Methodist Church (at the Aldersgate Campus), past president of the Golden Rule Sunday School Class, past president of XYZ (Extra Years Zest), member of the official board and kitchen committee, all of the church. She was a life member of the PTA and a volunteer at Maryview Hospital. She served in the Navy School of Music in Washington, D.C., at the Naval Supply Center in Hawaii and the U.S. Navy Recruiting Station, Cincinnati. Other survivors include three daughters, Pamela L. Ayers of Sterling, Va., Deborah A. Koller and husband Kent of Richmond and Patricia A. VanHassel and husband John of Westerville, Ohio; a sister, Ruth Painter of California, Ky.; a brother, George H. Shotwell of Nashville, Tenn.; and seven grandchildren, Dan, Joe and Laura VanHassel, Scott and Robert Koller and Shawn and Ryan Eastridge. BOCOCK, Frederic Scott, died November 24, 2008, in Richmond, Va., at the age of 76. He is survived by his wife, Roberta Bryan Bocock; and his four children, Natalie Friend Bocock Turnage, married to Mark Timothy Turnage, John Holmes Bocock, married to Nora Miller Brookfield, Alexander Hamilton Bocock, married to Amy Elizabeth Sullivan, and Marianne Meade Bocock Doyle, married to Brian Courtland Doyle. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Buford Bocock Hitz and was preceded in death by his sister, Bessie Friend Bocock Carter. He had 14 grandchildren, Jonathan Kincheloe Turnage, Mary Buford Turnage, Helen Bryan Turnage, Frederic Loren Bocock Turnage, Willis Henry Bocock, Marianne Robinson Bocock, Nora Brookfield Bocock, Frederic Scott Bocock, James Sullivan Bocock, Mary Lowrey Bocock, Elisabeth Bryan Bocock, Elisabeth Scott Doyle, Courtland James Doyle, and Alexander Bocock Doyle. Freddie graduated from William Fox Elementary School, Binford Middle School, Episcopal High School in 1950, and the University of Virginia in 1954. After two years of service in the United States Navy, he began his 51-year tenure with Scott and Stringfellow where he was a partner. He served as Vice Chairman of Scott and Stringfellow, Inc. from 1974 until 2001. He was President of the Richmond Memorial Hospital Board and served as a founding member of the Board of Trustees of the Richmond Memorial Health Foundation. He was President of the Men's Advisory Board of the Virginia Home and served on the Boards of the IVNA-Instructive Visiting Nurses Association and St. Catherine's School. He also served on the Vestry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Seven Society of the University of Virginia. A service will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 815 East Grace Street, Richmond Va., at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 1, 2008, followed by a graveside service at Hollywood Cemetery. BULLOCK, Grover C., 88, of Henrico County, Va., died Thursday, November 27, 2008. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Inez Henley Bullock. He is survived by his son, Fred Bullock and his wife, Dale; and his daughter, Joan B. Isaacs and her husband, Ronnie. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Jim Bullock (Sherry), Dana Keup (Ken), and Chris Crist (Matt); four stepgrandchildren; his great-grandchildren, Brittany, Kasey, Tanner, Sydney, Jenna, Lindsey and Ryan; and other family members. Harrell Delbert (Hal) Cansler, 57, passed away on November 19, 2008, in Shawsville, Va. He was born on August 28, 1951, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston, Texas. Hal had a deep love for being outdoors and a quest for adventure shown by his time spent skiing and paddling all over the world. He made a career out of helping others discover a love for the same as an instructor, a member of local ski clubs, and as manager of Back Country Ski and Sports for over two decades. He is preceded in death by his father, Horace Delbert Cansler; and his mother, Valrie Brown Cansler. Hal is survived by his daughter, Angie Vegas and husband, Luke; grandsons, Jacob, Joshua and Lane Vegas; his sister, Caryn Tolin and husband, Craig; nephews, Clay and Chase Tolin; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and long time friends. Clynard Russell Frazier VIRGINIA BEACH - Clynard Russell Frazier passed away Nov. 27, 2008 in Sentara Leigh Hospital. He was born Aug. 26, 1915 in Guilford County, North Carolina. He was the son of the late Thomas Russell Frazier and Cora Pickett Frazier. Mr. Frazier was a local contractor and was instrumental in the construction of Cavalier Manor, Laurel Manor, Hilltop Manor and several other local developments. He was a 32nd degree Freemason. Mr. Frazier was an avid gardener and known far and wide for his home-cured country hams and ham biscuits. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Juanita Gaines Frazier; four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife Mildred Jean Frazier of the home; his daughters, Geneva Frazier of Virginia Beach, Dolores Frazier Stakes of Roanoke, Va.; his sons, Thomas Russell Frazier and wife Linda, Steve Clark Frazier and wife Royce and his stepson Sherman Leslie Reed, all of Virginia Beach. H. Rose Holman VIRGINIA BEACH - Rose Holman, 84, went to be with her Lord Nov. 27, 2008. She was a native of Jamaica where she was very active in Christian ministry with young people. She had resided in Virginia Beach since 1982 and had worked at CBN as a phone counselor. As a member of First Baptist Church of Norfolk, she had been actively involved in the Berean Sunday School Class. She was predeceased by her daughter, Annette; two brothers, George Fullerton and Kenneth Fullerton of Canada; and her beloved husband, Dr. Charles L. Holman, professor at Regent University School of Divinity. Survivors include her daughter, Emily and her husband Bruce Morris of Fort Worth, Texas; her two precious grandchildren, Stephen and Katherine Morris; and two sisters-in-law, Joy Fullerton and Jill Fullerton of Canada. Vivian W. Johnson NORFOLK - Vivian W. Johnson, a resident of Norfolk, passed away Nov. 27, 2008. She was the daughter of the late James and Essie Watford and was the third of eight children. She completed her high school education in Powellsville, N.C., and her undergraduate and graduate studies at Norfolk State University. Ms. Johnson was a loyal and faithful member of New Calvary Baptist Church. She often stated that her role in life was to serve others - not to be served. This was apparent in her many accomplishments and commendations at the local, state and national levels. She received national recognition for working with the National Youth Sports Program and was also honored by NASA for working with and supporting the National Pre-Service Teacher Education Program. Ms. Johnson also served as president of the NSU Association of Educational Office Personnel. She retired from Norfolk State University as coordinator of the Child Care Training Program which was designed to train and assist welfare mothers to be successful in new careers. She leaves behind to celebrate her life, a daughter, Dr. Vivian Ikpa of Delaware; a devoted niece and nephew, Yvonne and David Thompson of Virginia Beach; a brother, Joseph Watford of Pennsylvania; a sister, Kathleen Elizabeth Watford of Virginia Beach; a caring brother-in-law, Leroy Harrell of Houston, Texas; and a host of other relatives. KAWANA, Paul E., 78, after a long illness peacefully entered into eternal rest on November 20, 2008 with loving family at his side. Born in Sharon, Pa. in 1930, Paul moved to Virginia in 1964, living in Franklin, Va. for 12 years, and then resided at his beloved Lake Caroline, Ladysmith, Va., for 30 years. The career Paul enjoyed most was as an Insurance Sales Manager for Globe Life. He retired in 1992. Paul was active in retirement, creating recreational programs at the Lake, especially the Lake Caroline Bass Club. Fishing, hunting and football games were his favorite pastimes. Paul also loved worshipping in his spiritual home of Carmel Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Katherine Kawana of Sharon, Pa.; and his first wife, Patience Lyons Kawana, also of Sharon. Left to cherish his memory are Patricia Kawana, his best friend and wife of 31 years; four children, Paula Toler (Calvin K.), Tom Kawana (Sonia), Kim Agnew (Jim) and Gary Kawana (Caroline); two stepchildren, Marty Mathurin (Rhonda) and Jae Robinson; nine grandchildren, Calvin H. Toler, Daniel Agnew, Tania Kawana, Tiffany, Cameron, Seth and Savannah Kawana, and Virginia and Victoria Mathurin; one great-grandchild, Calvin A Toler; three sisters, Mary Lou Garrett (Chuck), Carol Miklos, and Donna Komocsin (Nick). Paul also leaves his cousins, nieces, nephews, and many special friends. We are grateful to all of the staff at the Gables Memory Impairment Unit of Westminster Canterbury for their wonderful care of Paul over the past two and a half years, especially the loving aides who were his daily personal caregivers. Leo Koenigsberg VIRGINIA BEACH - Leo Koenigsberg, 91, passed away Nov. 27, 2008 in Virginia Beach. He was born in Detroit, Mich., on Aug. 16, 1917 and moved to the Tidewater area in 1968. He was the son of the late Mendel and Esther Koenigsberg. He is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Betty; his daughters, Lynn Moya and son-in-law Hector of Pompano Beach, Fla., Sharon Yaakov and son-in-law Joseph of Rockville, Md.; stepsons, Stephen J. Boyce and wife Nicole of Richmond, David B. Boyce and wife Karen of Ashburn, Va.; grandchildren, David Yaakov, Rachael Bonk, Phillip, Zachary and Anna Boyce and great-granddaughter, Kayla Yaakov. Leo "Lee" proudly served his country for 12 years in the U.S. Army. He served in the European Theater as a 2nd Lieutenant landing on Omaha Beach June 12, 1944. He also served as a captain in the Korean War. Lee worked in Washington, D.C., with the Interstate Commerce Commission and in the real estate business before coming to Norfolk in 1968. He also worked for the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority where he retired in 1984. Lee was a past member of The Virginia Beach Optimist Club and did volunteer work for Meals on Wheels. He was always available to lend a helping hand with charitable work being done through the Alpha Xi Chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha. His family and friends will always remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. He will be sorely missed. A funeral will be held in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, Monday at 11 a.m. by Rabbi Israel Zoberman. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. STEWART, Virginia Wright Lankford, 89, a retired Richmond Public Schools teacher, died Thursday, November 13, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband, James LaFayette Stewart. She is survived by her children, Victoria S. Bethel and husband, David, and Bob Stewart and wife, Pattie; four grandchildren, Jacqueline Bethel, Bobby and Michael Carey Stewart and Bridget Crusan; one niece, two nephews, five great-nieces, two great-nephews, one great-great-nephew and one great-great-niece. Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of George Albert Lankford Sr. and Alice Carey Lankford of Capron, Va. She received her B.S. degree from Madison College (now James Madison University) in 1940. She taught school in Kempsville, Holland and Suffolk, Va. before coming to Richmond in 1952, where she taught until she retired in 1979. Prior to June 2000, Mrs. Stewart was a dedicated member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and an elder for two terms. She was an active worker with the Presbyterian Women, where she served as Circle Leader for many years. Since June 2000, she has been a member of Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church and active with the Presbyterian Women there. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m Saturday, December 6, at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church. Burial services will be private. God called an angel, Mrs. Alice "Nookie" Rose Goodwyn Thompson, to her heavenly home above on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008. Mrs. Alice R. Thompson of 2220 Chesdin Lake Road, Church Road, Va., departed this life suddenly Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at Southside Regional Medical Center. She was a native of Amelia County, Va., born July 16, 1933, to the late Stephen and Pearl Goodwyn of Amelia County. She was the widow of Charles H. Thompson, and to that union, nine children were born. Mrs. Thompson was educated in Amelia County public schools. She joined Union Baptist Church at an early age and was a dedicated member. She served on the Senior Choir, the Usher Board, the Pastors Aide, Willing Workers ministries and also served as church sexton. Mrs. Thompson retired from Hiram Davis Medical Center after 20 years of service. Alice was well respected and loved by all whom she encountered and will be sadly missed. Mrs. Thompson is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles H. Thompson; two daughters, Lyndia and Bernice Thompson; one son, Earl Thompson; one brother, Willie Goodwyn Sr.; two sisters, Dorothy Hamlin and Thelma Thomas. She leaves to cherish her memories: three daughters, Shirley Smith (Mark) of Amelia County, Va., Edith Newsome (Robert) of Surry County, Va., Rachel Smith (William) of Petersburg, Va.; three sons, Charles Thompson (Brenda) of Petersburg, Va., James Thompson of Amelia County, Va., and Richard Thompson (Dorothy) of Crewe, Va. She has 11 grandchildren, Monica, Corinthia, Antonio, Tinitia, Myoushi, Madiyha, Muw'Mina, Charles Jr., Jamilla, Travis, and Carlos; three adopted grandchildren, Theresa, Penny and Andrew Bright; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Perry (Jessie) and Virginia Morgan; one sister-in-law, Dora Goodwyn. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, too many to name. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, at Union Baptist Church, Church Road, Va., with the Rev. Leroy Rhone officiating. The interment will be held at the church cemetery. Maxwell J. Upshur Jr. CHESAPEAKE - The Rev. Maxwell J. Upshur Jr., or "Mac" or "Gungun" as he was affectionately known by his family and friends, was born June 3, 1940 to the late Susie Upshur Crimes and Maxwell J. Upshur Sr. in Norfolk. He was educated in the Norfolk Public School system. He worked most of his adult life as a private contractor, and was last employed with C.B. Richard Ellis until his retirement in 2006. "Mac" was a devoted and active member of St. Mark United Church of Christ, serving faithfully as an ordained minister, member of the No. 2 Choir and the Deacons' Board. He also had a work release jail ministry. His greatest joy was sharing the word of God with anyone that he came in contact with. He will be remembered as a loving husband to Ruth, whom he affectionately called "Gladys", his wife of more than 38 years. He is survived by his children, Oulaniece Saunders (the Rev. Alvin Saunders), Eldrena Upshur and Reginald McDaniel. He is also survived by Rhonda Patterson, Shelby Carter (Al), Claude Ford, Regina Zarrelli and Robert Zarrelli (Angela); three brothers, Melvin Epps (Victoria), Wilbert Upshur (Burnette) and Bernard Upshur (Christine); two sisters, Jean Upshur and Julia Alston; 11 grandchildren; five great-grand children; special friends, the Rev. and Mrs. Jesse Lassiter, Mr. Charles Thomas; and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. WALKER, John Patrick, 43, of Chesterfield, Va., passed away on November 28, 2008. He was born in Richmond, Va. the son of the late Raymond Sr. and Sidney Snyder Walker. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Sue Ann Ramsey. Mr. Walker was a founding member and past officer of the Funtime Virginia Aeronuts. He also held over 24 years of employment in the trucking industry, beginning with Overnite Transportation and later advancing with U.P.S. Freight after their merger. Mr. Walker had currently held the position of equipment specialist, and was well liked by everyone he worked with. He is survived by his siblings, Mary K. Spencer and husband, Wayne, of Chester, Sydney M. Fleckenstein and husband, Tom, of Wilson, N.C., Charles V. Walker and wife, Martha, of Chester, Raymond H. Walker Jr. and wife, Deb, of Smithfield, N.C., Ronald L. Walker and wife, Gail, of Chester, and Charles R. Hevener and wife, Rhonda, of Hopewell; many special nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews; and John's faithful and loving companion, "Paulie Walker," his African Gray parrot. John always said "he never wanted a child to have to experience what he had with his illness." Estelle E. Woods PORTSMOUTH - Estelle Epps Woods of the 900 block of Cambridge Ave., died Nov. 26, 2008, in her residence. Born in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., she served as minister of True Vine Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was a former member of St. Paul Holiness Church and the widow of Dailey Woods. Survivors include a son, Richard D. Woods Sr.; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pastor Woods also leaves behind Chairman Deacon Thomas Britt, Trustee Cheryl Nicholson and Deacon Bobby Deberry, appointed by Pastor Woods to assist her in pushing True Vine members to continue to give God their best. Though her health had started to deteriorate, she never let it get her down and she always kept her spirit up - this is what a good leader is supposed to do. She counted on and leaned on her great niece, Cheryl Nicholson to be there for her. Cheryl accepted Pastor Estelle Woods' request and incorporated the help of RN Renee Britt, RN Rosa Ward, Brenda Dunn, Cynthia Sykes, Katie Britt, Gloria Brown and Angela Clack to care to, ease and comfort Pastor Woods to the best of their ability. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. Mark Missionary Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by Bishop Eli Ratcliff Sr. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake.
