Surviving is her husband of 20 years, George A. BUCKMAN, Jeanne Kelleher, 80, of Richmond, died suddenly at her home November 12, 2008. Jeanne was an independent woman who devoted her later years to the study of Buddhism and the beauty of the world around her. A Richmond native, Jeanne was the daughter of John Lawrence and Edna Taylor Kelleher. She attended Richmond Professional Institute and Academy of Sciences and Fine Art. As a young woman she traveled to New York to pursue her lifelong love of art at Parsons School of Design, NYU, and the Art Students League of New York. Jeanne returned to Richmond in 1968 and held jobs in the field of art restoration including assistant to Mr. William Young at Young's Art Shop. She also held positions with American Airlines and was a buyer for Miller & Rhoads. At her death, Jeanne was a full-time employee of Suitable for Framing, where she worked for 31 years. She never wanted to retire, instead enjoying the companionship of coworkers and clients. She was a longstanding member of Kagyu Shenpen Tharchin at Ekoji Buddhist Sangha of Richmond. "Grandma Jeanne" was a colorful, thoughtful, and gracious person who spread her joy in living to everyone she met. Survivors include her daughter, Lisa Lear Buckman of Virginia Beach; her son, William E. Buckman Jr. and his wife, Tami, of Richmond; and a granddaughter, Katherine Jeanne Buckman. A Buddhist service will be held Thursday, November 20. Friends and family are welcome between the hours of 5 to 8 p.m. at Woody's Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road, Richmond, Va. DEWEY, Fern Reichman, 89, of Powhatan, formerly of Bon Air, died November 13, 2008. Born in 1918 in Topeka, Kan., she was the survivor of 10 children. Beautiful, intelligent and ambitious, she followed two older sisters to the east coast, settling in pre-WWII Washington. During a visit to Philadelphia in 1942 at the USO, she met and fell in love with Air Force Sgt. Ray Dewey. They married in 1943. Sons, Ray Jr. and Jeff followed, then the three sisters and their families settled in New Jersey. She was preceded in death by Ray after 60 years of marriage. A transfer to Richmond resulted in a professional career featuring founding membership in the National Secretary Association and the Certified Professional Secretary designation. She retired as the administrative assistant to the President of Abbott, Proctor and Paine. Survivors include sons, Ray Jr. and his wife, Pat, of Powhatan and Jeff and his wife, Pat of Mechanicsville; grand-daughter, Allison of Mechanicsville; grandson, Mark and his wife, Jill, and their daughter, Virginia, of Powhatan; as well as countless nieces, nephews and wonderful friends. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Huguenot Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, 1020 Huguenot Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Nov 16, 2008 The funeral for George Howard Hodge, 71, of Axton, who died Nov. 12, 2008, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Peaceful Zion Full Gospel Baptist Church in Martinsville. Dr. Roy T. Dalton and Elder Alease Galloway will officiate. Burial will be in the Hodge family cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour before the funeral Monday at the church and other times at the home on 1996 Birchwood Road, Axton. Hodge was born in McComas, W. Va., on Aug. 8, 1937, to George W. Hodge and Katherine Norman Hodge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by Odell Hodge, Melvin Hodge, Leroy Hodge, Shirley H. Thomas and Maretha H. Mullins. He graduated from George Washington Carver High School and was self-employed as a carpenter. He also served in the Army. He was a member of Peaceful Zion Full Gospel Baptist Church in Martinsville, where he was an ordained deacon and a member of the choir. Surviving are his wife of 43 years, Bertha Elizabeth Hodge; two daughters, Rachel E. Hodge of Axton and Rebecca H. Dodson of Collinsville; two sons, David H. Hodge of Kernersville, N.C., and Quincy J. Hodge of Axton; eight grandchildren; and three sisters, Forestine H. King of Colombus, Ohio, and Elizabeth H. Millner and Ethel H. Mullins, both of Axton. He considered visiting church members in their homes a very important part of his ministry and this endeared him to the congregations and he to them. GOODWIN, James "Jim" C. Jr., died November 11, 2008, after a lengthy illness. He was predeceased by his parents, Frances S. Goodwin and James C. Goodwin Sr. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Patricia "Trisha" Evans Goodwin; his brother, Jack S. Goodwin and his wife, Ellen, of Richmond; his brother, Kenneth "Buddy" Goodwin of New Orleans, La.; his sister, Jenny Duplantis of Slidell, La.; his mother-in-law, Mabel "Mickey" Evans of Richmond; and his sister-in-law, Carrie Lee Evans of Richmond. Dr. Goodwin received a B.S. in Petroleum Engineering and an MBA from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, La. He earned a Ph.D in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Jim was employed as a Drilling Engineer by Chevron and Atlantic-Richfield in the 1960's. He taught in the business schools of Florida State University, the University of Louisiana-Monroe and Georgia Southern University. He joined the faculty of the University of Richmond in 1976, when the business school began an MBA program. He retired from U.R. as Professor Emeritus in May 2000. Dr. Goodwin was the author of National and International Academic Journal articles. He received the U.R.'s Distinguished Educator Award twice and was the only recipient of the Richard S. Reynolds Award (for positive influence on lives and careers) when he retired. He served as a consultant for many local, regional and national corporations and government agencies. He was an enthusiastic duplicate Bridge player and reached the ACBL rank of Silver Life Master. He was a great admirer of labrador retrievers and raised several, Cocoa and Shottie. The family will receive friends at the Parham Chapel-Woody Funeral Home, 1771 North Parham Rd. on Monday, November 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. Jim's remains have been cremated and a private family service will be held when all family is in the country. HAILE, Dr. William Buckner Jr., 68, an aeronautical engineer who had a key role in the development of the Hubble Space Telescope and several NASA satellites, died November 1, 2008, while bicycling near his home in Port Republic, Md. Dr. Haile spent more than 20 years as the chief structural engineer for the Hubble telescope while working at Lockheed Martin. Later, he was a consultant and designer during the development of an exhibition about the telescope at the National Air and Space Museum. He also worked as senior engineer for Swales Aerospace and ATK. Dr. Haile was born in Washington, D.C., but spent his summers in Tappahannock and on the Northern Neck. From Virginia Tech, he received his BS, MS and PhD in engineering science and mechanics. Survivors include his wife of eight years, Joy Ann Bartholomew of Port Republic; his former wife, Phyllis Andis Haile; three children from his first marriage, Jessica A. Haile of Laguna Niguel, Calif., Adam A. Haile of Durham, N.C., and Rachael A. Haile of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Jane Haile Dawkins of Key West, Fla. and Tappahannock; and a brother, Edward Wright Haile of Champlain, Va. She was born September 13, 1925, in Stuttgart, Germany to Adolf von Eberhardt Dindinger, the Duke von Eberhardt, former Adjutant General to Kaiser Wilhelm and famed architect of pre-war Berlin, and to Tatjana Wiczewski Dindinger, educator, of Russia. Shoshana Hillelson was a member of the German Olympic figure skating team in 1944 and was a concert pianist of international renown with Toscanini. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 60 years, Upton M. Hillelson of New York City, former president and CEO of the New England textile conglomerate Granite Mills, Inc. She also leaves her three children, Howard Hillelson of Atlanta, Dr. June Hillelson of Grand Rapids, Mich, and Ruth Hillelson, M.D.; and her beloved son-in-law, Terry L. Surviving are a daughter, Linda Bolan; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five sisters, Louenna Pendleton of Martinsville, Rhondalene Forney of Fredericksburg, Audrey Stanley of Lexington, Ore., Vivia McFarland of Windsor, S.C., and Drema Byrd of Pawley's Island, S.C.; and one brother, Don Stanley of Meadows of Dan. LYNCH, Sarah Izard Smith, of Wilmington, Del., died peacefully on Saturday, November 8, 2008. Born in Richmond, Va. in 1922, she was the second of three daughters of Marsden C. and Sarah I. Smith. She graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond and attended Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C. She later moved to Wilmington, Del., where she worked as a secretary for the DuPont Company. While in Wilmington, she met and married William F. Lynch II in 1955. An avid knitter and needle pointer, she was co-owner of the Yarn Patch Inc. in Greenville, Del. for many years. Her other interests included gardening, volunteering in the community and playing golf and bridge. She was a longtime member of the Junior League of Wilmington, the Delaware Chapter of the National Cathedral Association, the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Delaware, the Descendants of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence, Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Wilmington Country Club. Mrs. Lynch is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sally and Mark Poulsen of Lorton, Va.; her beloved grandchildren, Sarah Emery and Cooper William Poulsen; and a sister, Anne M. Clow of New Canaan, Conn. She was predeceased by her husband, and her sister, Elizabeth Seibert. Memorial contributions may be made to Limen House for Women, 624 N. MASSAD, Peggy Joyce Davenport, 78, of Richmond, Va., passed away on November 13, 2008, surrounded by her loving family. Peggy was an incredibly caring wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and was the heart of her family. She was born July 20, 1930 in Glebe Point, Va. She was the daughter of the late John W. and Pearl Davenport. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her sister, Julia; and her brothers, Floyd and Alvin. Peggy is survived by her husband of 58 years, John S. Massad; her four children, Mary Jane Hogue and her husband, Harvey, Abe Massad, Liz Ashby and her husband, Conor, and John Massad Jr. and his wife, Cyndi; five grandchildren, Ashley Hogue Van der Waag and her husband, Warren, Alicia Hogue, Elizabeth Hogue, Ned Nielsen III and Peyton Massad; a great-grandson, Griffin James Van der Waag; and a host of devoted family and friends. Peggy was happiest when she was planning celebrations for her family's birthdays, holidays and Monday night dinners. Her generosity of love and spirit touched all. Dr. Malcolm J. McPherson, of Blacksburg, passed away peacefully on November, 12, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; son, Malcolm Stewart; daughter, Alison; son-in-law, d'Riche; and grandchildren, Malcolm James, Victoria and Connor; brother, James; and sister-in law, Iris ; nephew and nieces. He was preceded in death by his sister Mary. Dr. McPherson was born into a mining family on February, 16, 1937 in Larkhall, Scotland. Dr. McPherson received most of his education in England. His studies followed the mining footsteps of his father and older brother. In 1958, he was accepted to study mining engineering at Nottingham University, graduating with a first class honors B.Sc. degree in 1962. He went on to conduct research in the area of mine ventilation and gained his Ph. D. in 1965., He gained international recognition of his work on planning the ventilation layouts of underground operations and was first to develop computer software for the analysis of the quantity and quality of airflows in ventilation networks. Modern versions of his programs are in use worldwide., In 1978 Dr. McPherson spent a semester as a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley. During this time, he became involved in the U.S. work on underground nuclear waste repositories. That work resulted in his being offered a faculty position at U.C. Berkeley which he took up in 1981., s had grown to the extent that he went into partnership with one of his graduate students, Keith G. Wallace, to form Mine Ventilation Services, Inc., a consultancy company specializing in mine ventilation The company remains in operation with its headquarters now in Fresno, CA., In 1991, Shirley and Malcolm McPherson moved to Blacksburg, where he took a position on the mining faculty at Virginia Tech. His children and grandchildren soon followed them to the New River Valley. In 1997 he was appointed Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Engineering. He served as Interim Dean in the two years before his retirement in 2003. He may best be remembered at Virginia Tech as the founder of the Institute for Critical Studies and Applied Science (ICTAS), a new paradigm for the organization of interdisciplinary research at the University., will be held at Our Saviour Lutheran Church, 1845 Cambria St., Christiansburg on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at 11 a.m. with Pastor Fred Hodges officiating. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman and Katherine Pendleton and his brother, Vincent. PUSEY, Vernelle Barnes, departed this life to be with her Lord on November 13, 2008. She was born in North-umberland County, Va. on October 27, 1916. The youngest of eight children, she was courted by Paul H. Pusey Jr., motored about Heathsville in his home-built car and later married him on July 30, 1933. They moved to Richmond, where Mr. Pusey founded Paul H. Pusey, Inc. automobile company, and together they raised their three children, William A. Pusey, now of Richmond, Patricia Pusey Clark, now of Santa Rosa, Calif., and Nancy Pusey Ayres, now of Big Canoe, Ga. In addition to being a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Mrs. Pusey was active in church, community and civic affairs. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Richmond, where she loved to work with the youth and young adults well into her later years and served on the Board of the Richmond Baptist Seminary. She was a member of the Country Club of Virginia, The Woman's Club, and The Tuckahoe Woman's Club, of which she was also a Director. She served on the Richmond City Council in 1968 and 1969, being the second female Council member. She was President of the Richmond YMCA and chaired Chapter 10 of the Mental Health and Retardation Board from 1970-73 and the Mental Health Committee of the Chapter 10 Board from 1974-76. She was the Legislative Chairman of the Richmond Mental Health and Mental Retardation Board, the Mental Health Representative of the HAS Board and served on the Governor's Voluntary Formulary Board. She was on the Memorial Guidance Clinic Board, the Richmond Community Action Board and the Richmond Community Senior Center Board, as well as the United Way Citizen's Study Committee and numerous other boards and committees. She was a member of the Board of Directors of Velpar Investments, Inc., a family holding company, and the Paul H. Pusey Foundation, a private charitable foundation. Upon her and her husband's retirement, they entrusted the continued operation of both to their children and grand-children. Mrs. Pusey was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Paul Pusey, whom she longed to rejoin. She is survived by her son, Bill Pusey and wife, Patti; daughters, Pat Clark and Nancy Ayres and husband, Bob. "Mimi", with her infectious laughter and zest for life, will be greatly missed by her eight grandchildren, whom she whipped into shape during annual family vacations at Virginia Beach and her 25 great-grandchildren. After a private burial at Hollywood Cemetery, a memorial service and reception will be held at First Baptist Church, Monument Avenue and Boulevard, in Richmond, at 2 p.m. on November 24. Nov 16, 2008 The funeral for Roosevelt Hairston, 75, of 932 Clover Road, Ridgeway, who died Nov. 13, 2008, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville, will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Mt. Sinai Apostle Church of Christ In God. Bishop J.C. Richardson Jr. and Bishop Robert Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Gardens in Martinsville. The family will receive friends a half hour before the service on Tuesday. Hairston was born in Henry County on May 15, 1933, to Gen. Grant Hairston and Annie May Hairston. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary E. Penn and Forestina Hairston; and three brothers, Benjamin Hairston, George G. Hairston and James Hairston. He worked at a brick yard in Draper, N.C. for four years and retired from Virginia Glass Products after 33 years of service. He was a member of Mt. Sinai Church for 40 years, where he served as deacon, usher, treasurer and a member of the choir, and he was a member of Emmanuel Church for 10 years, where he served as deacon and treasurer. Surviving are his wife Nora Hairston of the home; five daughters, Lula N. Hairston and Linda S. Littlejohn of Ridgeway, Rosa L. Morton of Roanoke, Roxie A. Hairston of Atlanta, Ga., and Betty J. Perkins of Eden, N.C.; two sons, Ned R. Hairston of Ridgeway and William G. Hairston of Axton; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Matilda Shelton of Ridgeway. Adam R. Sherman VIRGINIA BEACH - Adam R. Sherman, 17, passed away Nov. 14, 2008. He was born Sept. 5, 1991, in Norfolk to Anthony and Marjorie O'Toole Sherman. He was a senior at Green Run High School and the Vocational Technical Center in Virginia Beach in the Masonry Program. Adam was a talented guitar player and enjoyed music; he had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed hanging out with all of his many friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Nicholas and his twin brother, Andrew; his uncle, Dennis; and his paternal grandparents, Jerry and Frances Sherman. STEWART, Virginia Wright Lankford, 89, a retired Richmond Public Schools teacher, died Thursday, November 13, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband, James LaFayette Stewart. She is survived by her children, Victoria S. Bethel and husband, David, and Bob Stewart and wife, Pattie; four grandchildren, Jacqueline Bethel, Bobby and Michael Carey Stewart and Bridget Crusan; one niece, two nephews, five great-nieces, two great-nephews, one great-great-nephew and one great-great-niece. Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of George Albert Lankford Sr. and Alice Carey Lankford of Capron, Va. She received her B.S. degree from Madison College (now James Madison University) in 1940. She taught school in Kempsville, Holland and Suffolk, Va. before coming to Richmond in 1952, where she taught until she retired in 1979. Prior to June 2000, Mrs. Stewart was a dedicated member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and an elder for two terms. She was an active worker with the Presbyterian Women, where she served as Circle Leader for many years. Since June 2000, she has been a member of Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church and active with the Presbyterian Women there. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m Saturday, December 6, at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church. Burial services will be private. WARD, Steven Ronald, of Roanoke, Va., departed this life on November 7, 2008. A native of Richmond, Va., Steve was born on April 11, 1948 and was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Francis Ward. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Gail Hasselmann Ward; in-laws, John and Verna Hasselmann of Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Jerry Eyster of Southport, Conn.; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Judy Ward of Chandler, Ariz.; and half-brother, William L. Ward of Augusta, Ga. In addition, Steve leaves behind many other sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. After serving six years in the Air Force Reserve, Steve worked most of his life in the automotive industry. He loved NASCAR, boating on Smith Mountain Lake and throwing darts at Perkys. His greatest gifts were his quick wit, keen sense of humor and his lifelong love of animals, especially cats. Gail and the family would like to offer special appreciation to those who cared for Steve during the final stages of his illness, especially the staff of 12 West-Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Raleigh Court Healthcare, and his sitter, Melinda Henegar. Thank you for giving him the dignity the disease sought to destroy. John Douglas (Doug) Wiggins, of Charlottesville, Va., died on the afternoon of Wednesday, November 12, 2008. Doug was born on October 1, 1946, in Roanoke, Va., and has blessed his beloved wife, three sons, two grandchildren, family, and friends with love, devotion, and generosity throughout his life., Doug was the oldest of three children born to the late John Jerome Wiggins and Violet Long Wiggins. He was a graduate of Roanoke Catholic High School, and held a bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Virginia, where he enjoyed playing rugby and lacrosse., Doug valiantly served his country in the United States Marine Corps and is a veteran of the Vietnam War during which he received a Purple Heart, Combat Action Ribbon, and Presidential Unit Citation., Doug was a devoted family man, instilling strong values of faith, honesty, and integrity in his children and grandchildren. He lived by his life philosophy of "do the right thing for the right reason and you never have regrets.", Doug was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and just being outside. He also was a member of the Single Action Shooting Society and enjoyed competitive shooting. He thoroughly enjoyed Cavalier sports particularly football, basketball, and lacrosse., Doug was a devote Catholic and faithful member of Holy Comforter Church. He leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife, Priscilla Ann (Pam); sons, Joseph Paul, John David and wife, Kristy, Adam Glenn Robert and wife, Jessie; and grandchildren, Robert and Rachel. WILLIAMS, Mary H., went to be with her Savior on Friday, November 14, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with appendicial cancer. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945 to 1946. John attended Auburn University in Alabama, receiving a degree in Business Administration in 1951. He was a member of American Legion Post #215, past Master of Tuckahoe Masonic Lodge #347, an employee of Reynolds Metals in Richmond for over 30 years. He was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Goochland, Va., where he served on the Vestry and was an usher. John is survived by Mrs. Stephanie Wolf; stepdaughter, Melinda Roberts; and grandchildren, Travis, Ryan, and Emily Rae; one brother, Tim Wolf and family of Texas; and one cousin, Virginia Nagle.
