Mr. Reeve T. Barker Sr., a retired local area farmer, died Nov 11, 2008, in Tucson, Ariz. He was born in Mendota on March 21, 1912. He was a member of Mendota Baptist Church, and the Mendota Masonic Lodge. He also served on the Washington County School Board for more than 20 years. His wife, Wave Vermillion Barker, and four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons, Bob L. Barker of Tucson and Reeve T. Barker Jr. of Louisville, Tenn.; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The graveside service was conducted Nov. 15 in Glenwood Cemetery Mausoleum Chapel with Pastor Stephen Playl officiating. Burial was in Glenwood Cemetery. BATES, Claudia Shaw "Pinky", 57, of Charlotte Court House, daughter of the late Claude Raymond Shaw and the late Virginia Pugh Shaw, departed this life on November 19, 2008. She leaves behind a loving husband, W. Murrie Bates Jr.; along with her devoted sister, Deloca Payne Henshaw; a half- sister, Evelyn Pinkum,; two nieces, Mary Margaret Payne and Amber Rae Henshaw. Pinky was an elder and Sunday school teacher at the Village Presbyterian Church, with a deep love for her Savior, Jesus Christ. She was an educator in Charlotte County for 30 years, serving as a teacher, a middle school assistant principal and principal, as well as Director of Instruction. She had been president of the Charlotte County Branch of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities and the Piedmont Chapter of Educational Society, Phi Delta Kappa. She served in leadership roles in several other civic organizations. Family night will be held at Browning Funeral Home in Keysville, Va. on Friday, November 21, from 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the Village Presbyterian Church, Charlotte Court House, Virginia. A graveside service will be held Thursday, Nov. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Draper Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. He was born Feb. 3, 1954, in Wythe County. He was employed by Iron Tiger Logistics. He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Beaver; and a daughter, Bridget B. Weatherman. Survivors include his wife, Karen Smith Beaver of the home; a son, Robert Frank Beaver Jr. of the home; two grandsons, Tyler Weatherman and Cody Weatherman, both of Ivanhoe; mother and stepfather, Joyce Beaver Ruvolis and Charles A. Ruvolis of Salem; son-in-law, Roger Weatherman of Ivanhoe; a sister, Tena King of Roanoke; three brothers and a sister-in-law, James Douglas and Betty Beaver of Barren Springs, George Beaver of Hillsville and Rick Beaver of Marathon Beach, Fla.; special aunt and uncle, Annie Dean and Bryant Clark; and several nieces and nephews. Beeker, Frank Gilbert "Beek"

BEEKER, Frank "Beek" Gilbert, was born December 1, 1938 and left us suddenly on November 18, 2008. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He served from October 15, 1957 until he was discharged on October 14, 1963, as an E4 Airman 1st Class, Radio INTCP Operator, with the 6925 Radio Squadron Mobile Command, and he served in 57T061. He was a former employee of Lowe's, and being a retiree of the Wood Louver Company, it wasn't just work but works of art in the louvers he created. A wonderful husband and a loving and great father, he is survived by his true love, Amelia; his daughters, Shirley (Jim) Brockenbrough, Ramona (Kurt) Staudenmeyer, Sharon (Philip) Warren, Celia (Henry) Jones; grandchildren, Mila, Cabell, Bri (James), Allyson, Brandon, Issak, Haley, and Paul; great-grandchildren, Jason and Jadyn. He is also survived by brothers, Jan and Jerry; and many nieces and nephews. He will be missed greatly by not only family and friends, but also by those who shared treasured moments with him. He will be remembered for all the smiles and laughs one could take and for all his hugs and kind words he always had to give. He rests at the Atlee Chapel of Woody Funeral Home, Rte. 301 and Shady Grove Road, Mechanicsville, where visitation will be held on Friday, November 21, 2008 from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2008, at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. BLACKBURN, Mrs. Dorothy Frances Eason, 75, widow of Thomas Franklin Blackburn Sr., died Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at her residence after an illness. Mrs. Blackburn was born March 22, 1933 in Warsaw, N.C., a daughter of the late John Fred and Avie Taylor Eason. She was a graduate of Warsaw high school and retired after 27 years as the owner and operator of Jack and Jill Child Care in Kingstree. Mrs. Blackburn attended Sandy Bay Pentecostal Holiness Church. Surviving are her sons, Thomas F. Blackburn Jr. and his wife Carolyn, of Prince George, Va., John F. Blackburn and his wife, Robbie, of Mt. Olive, N.C., Jeffrey K. Blackburn and his wife, Shirley, of Kingstree S.C., and Timothy C. Blackburn and his wife, Kary, of Ladson S.C.; sister, Naomi E. Bell and her husband, J.J., of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Tracy (Bill) Price, Nancy (Travis) McKnight, Jamie (Melissa) Blackburn, T.C. . She was the daughter of the late John and Emma Riebel. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Boccella. Her life was highlighted by fishing with her loving companion, Frank Stefanski of 30 years, who preceded her in death. She was actively involved and very much loved and adored in the Kempsville Recreation Center Senior Citizens group. She was an active, good-hearted, kind, thoughtful and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend who will be deeply missed. He retired after working 36 years at Norfolk & Western Railroad. He also retired from the National Guard. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and an avid sports fan. A native of Nansemond County, he was the son of the late Andrew and Lynwood Mann Chapman. He was predeceased by two sisters, Anna Chapman-Scott and Geraldine V. Chapman; three brothers-in-law, Willie L. Towns Sr., John W. Scott Sr. and Ryland M. Myrick Jr. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army after three years. He was employed for 44 years at Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a machinist. He was a member of Abundant Harvest Outreach Ministries in Franklin. He leaves to cherish his memories one son, James H. Hill of Norfolk; a daughter, Sabrina Stewart of Norfolk; two special adopted sons, Irvin Hill Sr. (wife Alisha) and Hirschler Hill; five sisters, Rosa M. Harris (Elbert) of Portsmouth, Flora E. Charlton, Tyrone Melvin

Tyrone Melvin Charlton, 69, of Roanoke, Va., fondly known as "Stretch," "Slim," "Mr. C," Mr. "T," "Dad," and "Pops," was born June 8, 1939, in Radford, Va., to the late Lawrence and Ollie Snell Charlton. He was the second of four children. Tyrone entered into matrimony with Margie Carson Charlton on January 7, 1967, a union that produced three beautiful and adoring children., at High Street Baptist Church for over 17 years. Tyrone was a surrogate father to many of his children's friends and a big brother to many others., Those left to mourn are his wife of 41 years, Margie M. Thomas R. Childers CHESAPEAKE - Thomas Russell Childers, 80, of Horse Run Drive, passed away Nov. 17, 2008, in his home. Born in Gaffney, S.C., he was the son of the late Tom Russell Childers and Lucy Stepp Childers. Mr. Childers was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he received the Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon with a star and the Purple Heart while serving aboard the USS Wilhoite and USS Bull. He was a member of the Under-Aged Veterans Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion Post 280. Thomas touched many lives and will be greatly missed. COSNER, Robert "Sonny" Edward Jr., age 64, of McGregor, Texas, passed away Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at his residence with his wife at his side. Sonny was born June 23, 1944 in Kents Store, Va., to Robert and May Cosner. He served in the U.S. Army Reserve. Sonny and Patricia Ann Pickens were married in 1967. He began his career at Overnite Transportation Company, where he worked for 33 years as director of maintenance at USF Dugan in Wichita, Kan., before becoming Vice President of Maintenance at Central Freight Lines. Sonny was a member of Harris Creek Baptist Church. He was a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Edward Cosner Sr.; and stepfather, Russell Lee Marks. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; mother, May Elizabeth Cosner Marks of Goochland, Va.; sons, Raymond Scott Cosner and wife, Christa, of Paducah, Ky. and Robert Sean Cosner and wife, Kimberly, of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Hardin, Davis, Christian, Mason, Dalton, Reagan and Emerson Cosner. DAVIS, Allen Carlton, 84, of Richmond, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 19, 2008. Mr. Davis was a retired lieutenant from the Chesterfield Police Department with 30 years of service. He was born in Scottsville, Va., on September 22, 1924. Prior to his police service, he worked as a clerk with the C&O Railroad for 14 years and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of the Henrico Union #130 Masonic Lodge since 1948, the Scottish Rite, Acca Shrine, Legion of Honor, Manchester Shrine Club and Manchester Moose #699. He also was a member of John Marshall F.O.P. Lodge #2, Retired Richmond Police Officers Association. He served as a past president of Virginia Crime Clinic Chapter #2 and was past president of Virginia Credit Card Investigators Association. Allen was a longtime member of Beulah United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Gloria S. Davis. He is survived by his daughter, Crystal Davis Grady, and Jay Taylor; stepdaughters, Betty Glover and Rebecca B. Magee and her husband, Joe; stepson, Stephen E. Baril and his wife, Mary; sister, Bea Thacker; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Sydney and Dalton Baril. A native of Virginia Beach, he returned to the area in the mid- 1950s and went to work for Investment Corporation of Virginia. He soon became President and CEO of Investment Corp., where he remained until the firm was acquired by Scott & Stringfellow, Inc. Skip was a member of The Norfolk German Club, an Honorary Member of The Princess Anne Country Club and a former member of The Virginia Club, Norfolk. "Buddy " Flowers and Mary Duell Flowers; his stepfather, Grover T. "Jack" Flowers; and his sister, Jeanine F. Parr. He is survived by his daughter, Jennifer F. Honn and husband, Steve; and his son, David S. Flowers and wife, Amy; their mother, Stuart K. Short; grandsons, Damon W. Honn and Andrew S. Honn; granddaughter, Brooke M. Flowers; his special friend, Rhonda R. Easter; and his best canine friend, Jake. He is also survived by his nephew, Steve Cochran; niece, Vickie Parr Pultz; special cousin, Valerie Duell Terry; and many other cousins in Virginia and North Carolina. As a young child, Mr. Flowers lived in the Blandford area of Petersburg and attended Blandford Methodist Church. The family moved to Colonial Heights where he attended elementary school. Mr. Flowers graduated from Petersburg High School as a member of the class of 1955. He was a member of the Virginia Air National Guard 149th Tactical Fighter Squadron stationed in Sandston. Mr. Flowers was an agent with Nationwide Insurance. He retired in 2003 after 38 years of service to his policy holders. Mr. Flowers was involved with numerous civic organizations, including the Colonial Heights Jaycees, Kiwanis Club, Petersburg Aerie 882, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, and the Harrowgate Athletic Association, where he supported many of their activities. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, November 22, 2008 at the Petersburg Chapel of J.T. Morriss & Son Funeral Home & Cremation Service. Martha Emily Metz Gile, of Hillsville, Va., took her last flight on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. She was born to Fred Christian Metz and Martha Julia Fritz Metz on March 4, 1925. She was an aviator and native of Miami, Fla. Emily served with the Women Air Force Service Pilots (WASP) of World War II, class of 44-W-8., . The WASP were deactivated in December of 1944., Emily Metz Gile then married and served in the Air Force Reserves until she became pregnant with her son. She then attended Concordia River Forest College to become a teacher for elementary children in parochial schools. Then Gile received her Masters in reading education at Appalachian State University. Gile then moved Hillsville, Va., to be a reading specialist for Carroll County Schools., After her retirement form teaching she volunteered in so many ways. She was involved with many organizations including the American Association for Retired Persons serving as chairman for the retired teachers for years. Emily Gile was also a member of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, Carroll County Retired Teachers, American Legion and the serving as relay captain for many years. She also believed that the children of Carroll County needed the opportunity to experience flight so she began the Young Eagles' Program Local EAA chapter., Emily Gile leaves her two children, one son, Emory Bearden, of Hillsville, Va.; one daughter and son-in-law, Larry and Martha Musser; and her three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Caroline, and Sarah Musser, of Winston-Salem, N.C., s will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Vaughan-GuynnMcGrady Chapel with Marva Sandburg officiating. Jose Gonzales MANGATAREM, Pangasinan, Philippines - Dr. Jose Gonzales, 65, a resident of Virginia Beach, just retired from a successful urology practice and vacationing in his hometown of Mangatarem, unexpectedly passed away Nov. 14, 2008. He was born at the same place Dec. 15, 1942. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Mima Manaois-Gonzales; his three children, Dr. Norman Gonzales and wife Dr. Desiree T. Gonzales, Stephanie Raaschou and husband Prebin Raaschou and Roy Gonzales and wife Deidra S. Gonzales; and his only granddaughter, Gabrielle, all residents of Virginia Beach. Joe earned his doctorate in medicine from the College of Medicine, University of Philippines (UP). He was the chief resident in the Department of Surgery at the UP - Philippine General Hospital and specialized in urology from the University of Illinois. He moved to the Tidewater area in 1977, joining the Public Health Service on Hampton Boulevard, Norfolk. He started private practice, joining a urology group in 1979. He retired from Urology of Virginia July 11, 2008. He was a previous president and an active member of the Philippine Medical Association of Southeastern Virginia Inc. He was a member of the medical staff at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, Sentara Hospitals - Norfolk and Bayside and DePaul Hospital. A memorial Mass will be officiated by the Rev. Father James C. GREENE, William Thomas "Bill", 86, went to be with the Lord November 13, 2008. He departed from this life at his home in Chester. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mildred Marshall Greene; his daughter, Susan K. Greene and husband, Gary W. Hancock, of Staunton, Va.; his son, Thomas Richard Greene of Chester; two sisters, Joan G. McCarthy of Redlands, Calif and Ann G. Borseth and her husband, Edward, of Tucson, Ariz. Mr. Greene was born in Superior, Wisconsin, served in the Navy during WWII, and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1950. With a degree in mechanical engineering, he had a career spanning some 50 years. Hale, Jack Henry

Jack Henry Hale departed this world on November 20, 2008, leaving his beloved family, who will eternally miss him. He was born on May 4, 1924, and was the oldest of eight children. He was loved very much and respected by all of them. He worked in Pearl Harbor after the bombing and then served in the Army in World War II as a military police officer. One of the things he enjoyed was sharing great stories of his Army days. When returning from the war, he joined the Roanoke Police Department. He then was employed at Pet Milk Company, starting as a milkman and then advancing to manager. In the 1970's, he went into business for himself selling cars., Cars and racing has always been one of the greatest loves of his life. He started driving race cars in the late 1940's with one of his brothers. He was later known as the "Driving Milk Man". He has had the pleasure of racing with Curtis Turner and Wendel Scott. He truly loved telling these stories. He stopped racing in 1956, when his only child was born, but in 1992 he returned to his true love, behind the wheel of a race car, at the age of 68. He joined Virginia Old Timers. Then, he and a dear friend, Gerald Joyce, formed the Southern Vintage Modified Racing Association. At present, he belonged to Legendary Flat Head Ford Racing of North Carolina, where he had won four races this season. He enjoyed racing with these dear friends, Hurley and Linda Henshaw, Bill Blair, Munk and Betty Tate, Bob Shelton, David and Faye Prillaman., His second love and joy in his life was his bluegrass music. He was personal friends with many of the Grand Ole Opry members, spent many hours in the woods running coons with Jimmy Martin and spending time backstage of the Opry with Roy Acuff and Dolly Parton. He emceed many bluegrass festivals and was a disc jockey at two of the local stations, playing strictly bluegrass. He loved and lived it. He dearly loved all of his followers and fans. He was known on the air for the "Little Country Church" and as "the Big Man". At the time, he owned his own exterminating company. He has many dear friends in this area also. L. H. Tuck, Ivan and Ellen Overstreet always enjoying their music., His third love was hunting and fishing. Many, many hot afternoons were spent with one of his dearest friends, James Allen Brown, floating the river and sharing stories of "the one that got away". He holds the love of the Brown family dear to his heart. He was definitely a 16 year old in an 84 year old body. He was a member of the Brick Church of the Brethren. He also enjoyed bowling with his father and brothers on a league for several years., Jack was preceded in death by his loving mother, Ruth Johnson Hale; father, Jackson Coleman (J.C.) Hale; brothers, George Coleman Hale and Johnnie Lewis Hale; sisters, Myrtle Brubaker Cawley and Mary Elizabeth Angle. He is survived by his loving daughter, Diane Hale Taylor and her husband, Steven Taylor; his grandson, Adam Saul and his wife, Brooke, and their two children; Jack's great-grandchildren, Kaiden and Lucy Saul; his grandson, Aaron Saul and his wife, Anita; his brothers, Roy Hale and wife, Shirley, Boerne, Texas, Ralph Hale and wife, Dottie, Roanoke, Va., Harry Hale and wife, Gloria, Wirtz, Va.; nieces, Brenda Perdue and Jimmy, Anigo, Wis., Kathy Walker and Bim, Salem, Va., Debbie Conroy, Frederick, Md., Terri Hale, Sacramento, Calif., Kim Bonaparte and Tony, Texas, Jennifer Olney and Wes, San Antonio, Texas, Tina Gallegos and Mike, San Antonio, Texas, Melanie Hanks and Jonathan, Boones Mill, Va., Sherri Hale, Rocky Mount, Va.; nephews, Freddie Angle and Becky, Salem, Va., Gary Hale and Cheryl, Westminster, Md., Mike Hale, Sacramento, Calif., Dennie Hale and Kristie, Hampton, Va. He was also survived by many very special friends, including Elsie Criner, of Danville, Va. He had many special racing friends and fans. Elaine Smith Harris, 57, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, at Johnson City Medical Center in Johnson City, Tenn., following a brief illness. She was an LPN in the ER at Smyth County Community Hospital for many years. Her love of nursing and empathy for her patients stayed with her even after her career was cut short by a stroke in 1996. She was a member of the Oak Grove Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Mabel Louise Kestner Smith and Charles William Smith Sr. Survivors include husband of 38 years, Robert Harris; three daughters, Christy Harris Henderson and husband, David "Bo" Henderson Jr., Donna Joy Harris and Jamie Leigh Harris; four wonderful grandchildren, Rebecca and Elizabeth Henderson, Logan Harris, and Maddie Pickle; sister, Margaret Ann Smith; brother, Charles "Brother" Smith Jr. and two nieces, Tara Shupe and Amanda Whitehead; also many special friends, and former patients whose lives and hearts she touched in ways they will never forget. Willie Sue Hudgins HOBBSVILLE - Willie Sue Toms Hudgins, 93, of the 1600 block of NC Hwy. 37 South, died Nov. 18, 2008, in her home. Mrs. Hudgins was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina, and was the daughter of the late William Taylor and Nancy Caroline Smith Toms. A 1932 graduate of Cool Springs High School in Forest City, N.C., she then graduated from Asheville Teacher's College, now Warren Wilson College, and taught in the Gates County school system for 40 years. A faithful member of Zion United Methodist Church, she had served as a Sunday school teacher, was active in its United Methodist Women, the Adult Choir, and had been a counselor for the Senior United Methodist Youth Fellowship. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Wright Hudgins Jr.; sisters, Bessie Hoyle, Ruby Livingston, Genevieve Toms; brothers, Glenn, J.O. and Reid Toms; and four other siblings who died as infants. Surviving are a daughter, Suellyn H. Riddick; her husband, Dennis and their son Brannon of Hobbsville; a brother, Paul Smith Toms and wife Evelyn of Forest City; several nieces and nephews; and extended family members. HUDSON, Myrtle Blick, 91, of Chesterfield, died peacefully and entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, November 19, 2008. She was born and raised on a farm in Disputanta, Va. along with 14 brothers and sisters, all of whom she loved dearly. Myrtle married and moved to Richmond in the 1930's and later was employed by Philip Morris and the State of Virginia, from which she retired in 1979. She was a dedicated member of Central Baptist Church for many decades until her death. Mrs. Hudson is survived by her two devoted sons, Earl and Wallace Jennings; their wives, Linda and Patsy; three grandsons, Jeff, Mark and Andy and their families including granddaughters-in-law, Holly and Windy and three great-grandchildren, Lulu, T.J. and Edie. She is also survived by her sister, Lily Wyatt of Matoaca; her brothers, Marvin Blick of Prince George and Morris Blick of Mojave, Calif. Nanny Myrtle, Nanny MooMoo or Myrtle the Turtle, as she was affectionately known by her grandsons and many who knew her, always provided a good laugh and a ray of sunshine to everyone whenever there was an opportunity. She will always be remembered as a caring mother, a loving sister, a generous grandmother and a friend to all. Because of her, the world is a better place. He was a coal miner for 33 years and retired from Consol at the Buchannan No. 1 mine. He was a member of Pine Grove Church of Christ. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Curry Taylor of the home; two daughters, Monica Williams of Montcalm and Candice Taylor of Bluefield, Va.; two grandchildren; two brothers, Lonnie Taylor of Princeton and James E. Taylor of Montcalm; and two sisters, Linda Lilly of Rock and Ruth Ann Greet of Bassett, Va. The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Cravens-Shires Funeral Home in Bluewell with Minister Gary Lamie officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens in Princeton. Clark Francis Kennedy, Sr., 70 years of age of Paynesville, W.Va., passed away Tues., Nov. 11, 2008 at the Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va., following a brief illness. Born Feb. 13, 1938, in McDowell County, he was the son of the late James Francis Kennedy, who was the founder of Plateau Orchard, and his mother Gladys Cole Kennedy. Mr. Kennedy served our country in the United States Army (1959-1960) where he served in Germany and was of the Methodist Faith. He was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather and was the proud co-owner of Plateau Orchard for over 50-years. Clark will be greatly missed and will remain in our hearts always. McGEE, Joyce Meadows, 69, of Richmond, passed away November 18, 2008 after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She is survived by her beloved husband of 48 years, Art McGee; two loving daughters, Lisa Grim and husband, Garret, of Richmond and Laurie Joyce and her husband, Jamie, of Middletown, Md.; four adored grandchildren, Anna and Adam Grim and Sean and Shannon Joyce; and numerous other supportive relatives. She was born in 1939, raised in Waynesboro, Va. and attended Madison College (JMU) where she received her Bachelor of Science in Education. Following one year of teaching in Waynesboro, she taught in Henrico County Schools for 30 years (27 of which were in fourth grade at Jackson Davis Elementary School). In the 1970s and early 1980s she, along with her husband, were active in the Henrico County Girls Softball Program, their teams winning several national championships. After her retirement, she continued her love of education as a volunteer in Henrico County Schools. Joyce was a member of Commonwealth Chapter of the NSDAR and an active member of Three Chopt Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed traveling and other activities with her many friends, and her grandchildren were her greatest pride and joy. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Joyce will be missed by many. Carrie Belle O'Quinn, 88, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008 at her home. She was one of the last few surviving founding members of the Little Flock Holiness Church in Glade Spring. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arlan O'Quinn, and son, Sherman Goldie O'Quinn. He served in the Army during World War II and was owner/operator of Mize Motor Co. in Martinsville. He was a member of Old Well Christian Church in Spencer and the Spencer Ruritan Club. Powers, Woodie Malone

Woodie Malone Powers, 62, died at his home Sunday, Nov. 16, 2008 following a heroic battle with cancer. He was born March 17, 1946 in Washington County to Zelma Mae Powers and the late Jacob Elwood Powers. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Trula Mae Powers, and his mother-in-law, Irene Owens. He graduated from Liberty Hall High School. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was stationed on the Aircraft Carrier Oriskany and the USS Ticonderoga. He left the Navy in 1969. He worked at Westinghouse for 25 years. He later worked for Highlands Industrial Millwright with many of his longtime friends. He worked there until the beginning of his illness in 2007 but maintained close ties to his coworkers. He was a member of the Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. Woodie's generosity and kind heart were an inspiration to his family. He lived his life with integrity and honesty. Survivors include his wife, Jeannie, two sons, Russell and Dustin and daughter-in-law, Rhiannon; two brothers, Joe and Leon; one sister, Eula Copenhaver; his mother, Zelma Mae Powers, father-in- law, Howard Owens; very special cousin, Ernest Heath; and several loving nieces, nephews and other family members. Funeral services were conducted at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Bradley's Funeral Home Chapel in Chilhowie with the Rev. Tim Blevins officiating. Interment will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Rush Creek Cemetery with full military honors being rendered by Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. An active member of Cloverdale Church of the Brethren, she served as church secretary, Sunday School teacher, on the Administrative Board and various committees, was a Deaconess, later named a Deaconess Emeritus and most active in the Lay Witness Missions. Kathleen was a charter member and past president of the Women's Gideons International, Botetourt Camp. She was a volunteer and past president of the PTA at Cloverdale Elementary. An avid cook and seamstress, she literally sewed seeds of love for her family and friends., Surviving are her husband of 67 years, Joseph R. (Ran) Richardson; three daughters, Phyllis R. STEWART, Virginia Wright Lankford, 89, a retired Richmond Public Schools teacher, died Thursday, November 13, 2008. She was predeceased by her husband, James LaFayette Stewart. She is survived by her children, Victoria S. Bethel and husband, David, and Bob Stewart and wife, Pattie; four grandchildren, Jacqueline Bethel, Bobby and Michael Carey Stewart and Bridget Crusan; one niece, two nephews, five great-nieces, two great-nephews, one great-great-nephew and one great-great-niece. Mrs. Stewart was the daughter of George Albert Lankford Sr. and Alice Carey Lankford of Capron, Va. She received her B.S. degree from Madison College (now James Madison University) in 1940. She taught school in Kempsville, Holland and Suffolk, Va. before coming to Richmond in 1952, where she taught until she retired in 1979. Prior to June 2000, Mrs. Stewart was a dedicated member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon and an elder for two terms. She was an active worker with the Presbyterian Women, where she served as Circle Leader for many years. Since June 2000, she has been a member of Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church and active with the Presbyterian Women there. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m Saturday, December 6, at Tuckahoe Presbyterian Church. Burial services will be private. Fred E. Street NORFOLK - Fred E. Street, 67, died at Sentara Leigh Hospital Nov. 18, 2008, from complications following a stroke. He was born June 1941, in Bristol, Va., to the late William F. Street of Chesapeake, and the late Thelma Blanche Worley Street, of Bristol. Son of a Navy chief, Fred grew up in Virginia, Florida and Africa and graduated "most likely to succeed" from Norview High School in 1959. He graduated from Old Dominion College with a BS degree in secondary education in 1964 and received a master's degree in education from the University of Virginia in 1967, and studied for his doctorate at Virginia Tech. Fred's 35-year-career with the Norfolk public school system began in 1966 at Norview Junior High School. After teaching at Norview High School, he moved to Maury High School as assistant principal. He ended his career in the transportation division and retired in 2001. Once retired, Fred enjoyed travelling, golf and bowling with friends. Fred was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, a member of Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa fraternity, Kiwanis Club, Norfolk Sports Club, ODU's Big Blue Club and the Norview Alumni Association. Fred is survived by his sisters, Valarie Snyder and Nora Street of Norfolk, Ruth Street Slavens and her husband Alexander; and niece, Stella Street. He is further survived by his other relatives and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, William David Street and Donald Rhea Street. Fred always supported high school and college athletics. He donated time and helped to raise funds to support scholarship programs for deserving athletes. John Corbett Talton, 87, of Radford, Va., died from complications of prostate cancer on Tuesday, November 18, 2008, at his son's home in Richmond, Va., He was born in Selma, N.C., April 15, 1921, to Thomas and Swannanoa Talton and was one of a family of six brothers and one sister., He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Glenn, Thomas and James; and brother-in-law, Dr. William Jarvis., He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jo'Nell Lytton Talton, who was at his side; his son, Dr. John Corbett Talton II and his wife, Dr. Alexandra Sprigg Talton; and their four children, daughters, Harrison, Sydney, and Callie, and son, John Corbett Talton III, all of Richmond; and his daughter, Dr. Sarah Talton Campbell and her husband, Mac Campbell, of Clifton Forge, Va.; and their three children, daughter, Emily and her husband, Ryan Muterspaugh, of Clifton Forge, Va., daughter, Catherine and her husband, Ben Williamson, of Norfolk, Va., and son, John Campbell and his wife, Rachel, of Covington, Va. In addition, John is survived by two great-grandchildren, Kylie Grace Muterspaugh and Caleb Ryan Muterspaugh, both of Clifton Forge, Va. Other survivors include his brother, Douglas and his wife, Marie; and Doug's daughters, Jenny, Robin and Ellen; their mother, Jean, and their families; his brother, Bobby and wife, Betty; their sons, Dennis and Michael, and their families; his sister, Thelma Jarvis; and her sons, Thomas, David and James and their families; his sister-in-law, Geraldine Talton; his sister-in-law, Lucille Talton; her sons, Tim and Randy, and their families; his nephew, Jon Wyatt and his wife, Mary; their children and families; his nephew, Phillip Hughes; and his niece, Anne Booth and her husband, Al; and their children and families., Mr. Talton was a D-Day veteran and member of the Navy Special Forces. His unit, the Underwater Demolition Team, forerunner of the Navy Seals, was tasked with blowing-up the obstacles on the infamous Easy Red Sector of Omaha Beach, just minutes ahead of the Allied Landing., Mr. Talton was honored by the United States Navy and the French Government for his heroic actions that day., In 1993, he was one of Peter Jennings' featured interviews for the televised 50th Commeration D-Day Special., He was also featured on the History Channel's "Suicide Mission" series as well as being recognized in numerous publications and the Library of Congress' "In Their Own Words" audio archive., He retired from the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in 1981 where he worked as an engineer for 25 years., He enjoyed woodworking, collecting antique tools and golf with his buddies., He was a 45 year member of the First Baptist Church in Radford., He was a 52 year Mason and members of Virginia May Lodge #38 A.F. & A.M. and Westhampton Lodge #302 A.F. & A.M. and the Kiwanis Club for over 50 years., He was also a member of VFW Post #776 and The Meadows Country Club., Most of all he loved his family. He was the son of the late Howard A. and Nellie Armstrong Ward. He is survived by his wife, Deborah Ward; his children, Karen Scapellato and her husband, Dan, Pamela Renfrow and her husband, James, David A. Ward Jr. and his wife, Sharon, their mom, Sybil Ward, Amanda Stanchek and her husband, Matthew, and Samuel Wood; two sisters, Grace O'Neil Hillsman and her husband, Marvin Jr., and Linda Carol; three grandchildren, Dylan and Emily Renfrow and Gina Scapellato; many other loving family members and friends. He will be missed by all of those whose lives he touched. He was a U.S. Army veteran with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles; a member of the Richmond Area Municipal Contractors Association; and served as treasurer, secretary and chair and received the Contractor of the Year and Lifetime Achievement Award. He was on the Advisory Committee for the State Corporation Commission. He was appointed by Governor Gilmore to the State Board of Contractors, member of the Board of Directors of Virginia Utility Protection Service since its inception and served as chair. He was a member of the National Board of Directors of the National Utility Contractors Association and the member of the Ut Prosim Society of Virginia Tech. He was the chief financial officer of the non-profit organization, TLC Global, which benefits children; past president of the Capital Horse Show Association; and a partner in the Brandermill Country Club. WARD, Steven Ronald, of Roanoke, Va., departed this life on November 7, 2008. A native of Richmond, Va., Steve was born on April 11, 1948 and was predeceased by his parents, Harry and Francis Ward. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Gail Hasselmann Ward; in-laws, John and Verna Hasselmann of Roanoke; sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Jerry Eyster of Southport, Conn.; brother and sister-in-law, Harry and Judy Ward of Chandler, Ariz.; and half-brother, William L. Ward of Augusta, Ga. In addition, Steve leaves behind many other sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. After serving six years in the Air Force Reserve, Steve worked most of his life in the automotive industry. He loved NASCAR, boating on Smith Mountain Lake and throwing darts at Perkys. His greatest gifts were his quick wit, keen sense of humor and his lifelong love of animals, especially cats. Gail and the family would like to offer special appreciation to those who cared for Steve during the final stages of his illness, especially the staff of 12 West-Roanoke Memorial Hospital, Raleigh Court Healthcare, and his sitter, Melinda Henegar. Thank you for giving him the dignity the disease sought to destroy. Roberta was greatly loved by her family as well as numerous dear friends. Roberta graduated from Drexel University with a BA degree, completing her education started at St. Margaret's School, Tappahannock, Va., and Penn State University. She worked at insurance companies in Philadelphia and Richmond, earning an advanced Chartered Life Underwriter certification. After retirement, she was a longtime volunteer at the Shepherd Center, a member of Westminster Canterbury's community relations board and a member of the Richmond Women's Club, the American Association of University Women, the Virginia Museum and the Virginia Historical Society. She was a long-standing and faithful parishioner with St. James's Episcopal Church. Roberta was an excellent contract Bridge player, a talented and fanciful knitter of sweaters for family and friends; she loved fishing trips to Nag's Head and the Chesapeake Bay. To many in the Richmond community and elsewhere, Roberta was a loving and caring friend. His remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland, Va., and will be available for viewing Friday, November 21, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and one hour prior to homegoing services. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, November 22, 2008 at Ebenezer Baptist Church, Beaverdam, Va. Pastor Dr. John W. Kinney officiating. Interment in Roselawn Memory Gardens, Glen Allen, Va. Family and friends please assemble at the church at 12:45 p.m. on Saturday.

Zayat, Simonne Blanchard

Simonne Blanchard Zayat, 95, of Roanoke, Va., passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2008. She was born in Quebec Canada, and lived in Rhode Island for the greater part of her life. She was the widow of Oliva Blanchard; and Louis Zayat; and was also preceded in death by two grandsons. She is survived by five children, son, Roger Blanchard and wife, Kathy, of Maryland; daughters, Helene Blanchard Castellane, of Daleville, Sylvia Blanchard Duncan, of New Jersey, Yvonne Blanchard Manuel and husband, Charles, of South Carolina, and Beatrice Blanchard Smith and husband, Terry, of Bedford County; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one greatgreat-grandchild; and also special friend, Mary Bryant. Simonne was the last of the 10 children in the Coutu family. Funeral Mass will be celebrated noon on Saturday, November 22, 2008, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church with Msgr. Thomas Miller officiating. Interment will follow at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Friday, November 21, 2008, from 6 to 8 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel, 540-362-1237.
