On July 1, 1963, our Father who art in Heaven, opened up his Heavenly gates and allowed our Angel, Miss. Vernita Jean Coleman, "Vern," to fly down to Earth to be a part of our lives for a very short, but meaningful period of time. Vern graduated from Dinwiddie High School in 1981. She received an Associates Degree in Applied Science from Southside Community College, in Alberta, Va. She also attended Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va. She was a valuable and sincere employee of Pioneer Home Health Care for over 15 years. She was currently employed with the Department of Social Services in Petersburg, Va. On June 11, 2009, at 1:55 p.m., our Angel flew back to Heaven as her work was completed here on this Earth. She has met our Savior face to face and he said to her, "My dear and faithful servant, you have fought a good fight, Come and take your rightful place amongst the Angels." Miss Vernita Jean Coleman's Heavenly parents are Mr. Willie B. Coleman and Mrs. Pannie Lucille Walker Coleman. She leaves with teary eyes and heavy, painful hearts her sisters, Mrs. Edith Mills of Hagerstown, Md., Miss Patricia Hawkins of Cincinnati, Ohio, Miss. Wanda Montgomery of Hagerstown, Md., and Miss Barbara Baskerville of Richmond, Va.; her brothers: Mr. Jasper Gordon of Hagerstown, Md., Mr. Willie Gordon of Nottaway, Va., Mr. Michael Coleman of Accokeek, Md., and Mr. Casper Coleman of Atlanta. Vernita was a daughter, sister, aunt, great aunt, niece, and a devoted, loving, mother to a host of nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. To know her was to love her. Her encouragement, her faithfulness, and love helped us to walk through our difficult valleys. Her radiant smile guided our paths in a time of darkness. We know that this is not the end, for we shall meet again. She was a faithful Christian and a dedicated member of Jesus Fellowship Way Center, Petersburg, Va. Vern is in a peaceful place now. No more sorrow, no more death and no more pain. Her beautiful smile is shining upon us this day and days forward. Vern, we love you, we will miss you. You are gone to a better place, but you will never be forgotten for in our hearts you will stay, forever. A homegoing celebration will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Jesus Way Fellowship Church, 600 S. Crater Road, Petersburg, with the pastor, Apostle Elaine Johnson, officiating. Burial will commence at the Crestview Memorial Cemetery, South Hill, Va. Viewing will be held on Monday, June 15, 2009, from noon to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Joseph M. Johnson & Son Funeral Home. (804)-478-4411. |

A farm boy who graduated high school at the top of his class in Mabton, Wash., and later at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, N.Y., he served out World War II on Liberty ships and C-3s sometimes evading Japanese torpedoes and other times 60-foot waves in the North Atlantic. He achieved the rank of chief officer and earned his Unlimited Masters License. His seagoing days came to an abrupt end when he met Vivian Beverly Hansen at the Manhattan Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New York City.
