Ruth Elizabeth Wade Beheler, 83, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2009 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Norvelle Donald Lee Beheler, who died in January of this year. Born June 15, 1926, she was a long time member of Bethel Baptist Church. She loved God, her family, her dearest friends, her trips to Virginia Beach, crossword puzzles, reading and gardening. She exercised daily, and with all of that, found plenty of time for children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who called her "Nana Ru". She is survived by her children, Cheryl Beheler, Donna Gray and husband, Michael, Elizabeth Snider-Chittum and husband, David, and Steven Beheler and wife, Yvette; grandchildren, Davian Bishop, Heather Gray Indrawan and husband, Karolus, Jennifer Gray Little and husband, James, Wade Snider, Mitch Snider, and Megan Beheler; and one great-granddaughter, Lindsay Bishop; her brothers, Hayden and wife, Gloria, Leonard and wife, Nancy and John. Her family and friends will miss her very much, but know that she is with God, and is joyful. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel at 2 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2009. Janie "Louise" Elswick Brown, age 84 of Tazewell, Va., went to be with the Lord on Sun., June 21, 2009, at her home. Born March 19, 1925 in the Cove area of Tazewell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late John Henry "Jack" and Nannie Patrick Elswick. She was a lifelong resident of Tazewell County, Va., and a long time member of the Pisgah United Methodist Church. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Mrs. Brown was a former employee of the Tazewell County Development Corporation, a founder of Patch Blossom Exclusive of Tazewell, until its closing. She was a faithful employee of Hurst-Scott Funeral Home of Tazewell, Va., from it's beginning in 1988 till her retirement in 2005. She was an avid seamstress, homemaker, and caretaker of others. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Thomas "Shorty" Brown, Sr.; one daughter, Mary Ellen Brown; two sisters, Mary Howard Marrs and Grace "Hop" Hall; five brothers, William H. "Bill" Elswick, Stewart A. "Pood" Elswick, Robert M. "Bob" Elswick, James T. "Slim" Elswick, and Archie L. Elswick; two sons-in-law, the Reverend David A. Wood and Rodney "Chip" Blevins. Survivors include two daughters, the Reverend Margaret B. Wood-Johnston and husband, Andrew, of Fredericksburg, Va., and Dale B. Alphonse L. Bruno Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - Al Bruno Jr., M.D., 70, of Virginia Beach, passed away June 21, 2009. Dr. Bruno was born in Pittston, Pa., and was the son of Alphonse Bruno and Ruth Butt Bruno. His medical education began with pre-med studies at Norfolk division of The College of William & Mary. He joined the Navy Medical Corps in 1961 and graduated from the Medical College of Virginia in 1965 followed by a general rotating internship at Great Lakes Naval Hospital, Illinois. In 1966-67, Dr. Bruno was the medical officer on the USS Nereus Submarine Tender out of San Diego. From 1967-68, he was the doctor of gynecology at the Little Creek Amphibious Base Dispensary, Norfolk. In 1968-71, he completed his residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at DePaul Hospital and the Medical College of Virginia. For the next 38 years, he was in private practice and was associated with Eastern Virginia Medical School as a clinical private practice instructor. Survivors include his children, A. Leo Bruno, Sabrina M. Bruno, Dr. Briana D. Bruno Holtan, William Nicholas Bruno, Dr. Gretchen L. Bruno, Bridget B. Brydges and three grandchildren, Grady, Owen and Sawyer. He is also survived by two brothers, Francis A. Bruno and James A. Bruno and five sisters, Ann Deaton, Mary Termini, Virginia Bowden, Catherine Wishnosky and Marian Vollmer. Richard Cline, 58, of Rural Retreat died Friday, June 19, 2009. Funeral service will be held Thursday, June 25, at 2 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be in the Speedwell United Methodist Church Cemetery. He was born May 18, 1951, in Rural Retreat, son of the late Garland and Nelia Martin Cline. He was a member of the Marvin United Methodist Church and the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalman. He was an avid outdoorsman and conservationist with a love of hunting and fishing. He loved racing, watching and helping his son-in-law and his grandson race. Charles Perry Coe, 51, of Wytheville died Monday, June 22, 2009, after a long and courageous fight with ALS which is commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 24, at 2 p.m. at West End United Methodist Church with the Revs. Janet Richardson and Ann Blair officiating. Interment will be in Rosewood Memorial Gardens at Rural Retreat. He was born Jan. 31, 1958, in Wytheville. After graduating from George Wythe High School, he attended Wytheville Community College where he obtained his associate degree in business. After obtaining his associate degree, he became employed by Ewald Lester Insurance Co. which later became Bankers Insurance Co. He was a member of the Insurance Agents of Southwest Virginia serving as president from 1995-97. Throughout his career, he served on various insurance company councils. In 2005, he became the Regional Vice President of Bankers Insurance, Wytheville. He was a member of the Appalachian Officials Assoc. from 2000 to 2007, a member of the Wytheville Golf Club where he chaired several committees and served on the board of directors. He was an avid golfer and a staunch fan of the North Carolina Tarheels and a member of West End United Methodist Church in Wytheville. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles E. Coe; a brother, Darren Coe; and his grandparents, Garlen and Thelma Callahan and Charles and Mildred Coe. Survivors include his wife, Leigh Ann Coe of Wytheville; two sons, William Parker Coe and Charles Peyton Coe, both of Wytheville; his mother, Ruth C. Coe of Wytheville; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Janice and H.B. On Tuesday, June 23, 2009, our hearts were saddened by the passing of our loved one, John Wesley Evans, affectionately known as "Bo Duke," who entered eternal rest and peace at John Randolph Medical Center, Hopewell. A native of Surry, he was born Nov. 11, 1939, to the late Ernest Saunders and was preceded in death by two brothers, James Evans and Ernest Saunders Jr. "Bo Duke" was a retired employee of Smurfit-Stone Inc. with over 34 years of service and continued working with the Bogese family. He loved fishing, hunting and baseball, and was a longtime faithful member of the Green Top Hunting Club and Prince George Blue Sox. Charles W. Fox Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH - It is with great sadness that the family of retired Cmdr. Charles W. Fox Jr. announces his final assignment June 23, 2009. Charles was born July 3, 1930, in Washington, D.C., to the late Vice. Adm. Charles W. Fox and Aida Smith Fox. He was raised in Harrisburg, Pa. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, he was commissioned June 3, 1953. He served on the USS Bennington, USS Ticonderoga, USS Thaddeus and in 1959 went to his first shore duty tour as instructor at Fleet Sonar School, Key West, Fla. His next sea assignment was the USS Hissem as executive officer. In 1960 he was assigned to commander, Middle East Forces, Saudi Arabia followed by instructor duty at the U.S. Naval Destroyer School. His next assignment was as executive officer of the destroyer USS JP Kennedy (DD-850) followed by assignment to Defense Intelligence School and a tour as head of an intelligence section at Commander in Chief Atlantic. His next sea tour was as commanding officer USS Forrest Royal (DD-872) stationed in Mayport, Fla. He was later assigned as chief of staff to Commander Task Force 115, Republic of South Vietnam. It was at this command that he was cited for bravery and awarded the Bronze Star. His last active duty assignment was as assistant chief of staff for intelligence at Anti-Submarine Forces Atlantic. After his retirement in 1974, his valuable experience led him to employment with a number of companies that provide support for the Navy. His last employment prior to retirement was with Advanced Technology Inc., working in Saudi Arabia in support of the Royal Saudi Naval expansion program. His loving wife of 26 years, Ingrid (formerly Ingrid Thon) preceded him in death seven years ago. He is survived by his three daughters and their spouses, Denise and Mickey Boyette, Paula and Craig Livernois, and Glenda and Hubert Smith; grandchildren, Heather Jones, Lauren Boyette, Brittany Boyette, Jenna and Christopher Livernois, and Lexi and Cassie Smith; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Ellen Fox; and two nephews, Chris and Bob Wydler. He was preceded in death by a sister, Virginia Wydler. Friends and family will be received Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake. Nannie Josephine Henderlite, 88, died Friday, June 19, 2009 at Valley Health Care Center. She was born on April 28, 1921 to the late Timothy Hawkins Henderlite and Ollie Murray Hutton Henderlite and was preceded in death by two brothers, George Henderlite and Harry Henderlite, and a sister-in-law, Emma Henderlite. She graduated from Atkins High School in 1938 and was a member of the Groseclose Church of God. She was church treasurer and was past president of the Women of the Church of God. Arthur Wayne Neel, "The Man with the Garden," 88, of Wytheville, formerly of Tazewell, died Thursday, June 18, 2009, at Wythe County Community Hospital in Wytheville. Funeral service will be held Sunday, June 21, at 2 p.m. at the Chestnut Grove Christian Church in Shawver's Mill with the Revs. Larry Ramey and Joe Mack Taylor officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Rose Marie Otto CHESAPEAKE - Rose Marie Otto, previously of Lynchburg, Va., passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2009. Rose was known to her family and most friends as Pete, a nickname given to her by her parents due to her love of the old tune "Piccolo Pete." She was predeceased by her parents, Evelyn and James Otto of Covington, Va., where she was raised. Also predeceasing her were three brothers-in-law, James Lemon, Lea Pasley and James Leftwich. Pete worked in the physics department at the University of Maryland for 35 years as an accounting clerk. Pete was much loved by all of her family. She was the family touchstone and loving confidant. Survivors include three sisters, Ella Lemon of Brandon, Miss., Addie Pasley of Tupelo, Miss., and Eleaner Leftwich of Chesapeake; a nephew, Joe Lemon and wife Judy and their children, Abigail, Johannah and Mary Grace Lemon. Pete chose to live close to Joe and Judy and moved twice to keep near them. They were especially dear to her. Mrs. Deborah Arletha Harris Parham, affectionately known as Miss Debbie, of 5311 Moody Drive, Petersburg, Va., entered into eternal rest suddenly on Sunday, June 21, 2009. She had a phenomenal personality, willing to assist anyone in need! She had natural ability to manifest arts and crafts. She was also an avid flower grower. Virgil Leighton Rogers Jr., 92, of Roanoke, Va., passed away Sunday, June 21, 2009. He was born on January 7, 1917, in Roanoke, Va., the son of the late Virgil L. and Lena F. Rogers. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 55 years, Mary H. "Bette" Rogers;, and his son, Kevin L. Rogers. He is survived by his children, Leighton Rogers, of Roanoke, Stephen Rogers and his wife, Mindy, of Carolina Beach, N.C., Michelle Humrich, of Richmond, and Suzanne Miller and her husband, Rick, of Catawba. Also surviving are grandchildren, Elizabeth, Leigh and James Rogers, Greg Rogers, Jacob, Hannah and Olivia Humrich; and granddogs, Pete, Monk, Heidi, Lightnin', Bud and Jessie., during World War II, where he served as a corporal in the Army Air Force in Calcutta, India. Virgil was among the first to use radar technology to guide pilots back to base after transporting supplies over the Burma Hump. After returning from the war he continued his career at N & W Railway working in the general offices for 30 years. Virgil then began a new career in retail at S.H. Heironimus in 1964 where his merchandising skills, leadership abilities and ambition were quickly recognized. He was promoted to assistant manager at Towers, then was chosen to open and manage the new Crossroads branch store in 1967. In 1976 was promoted to vice president of operations for S.H. Heironimus, Inc. by the company board of directors, and fulfilled these duties until retiring in 1983. Virgil loved working at Heironimus where he was highly valued and respected by all. During his career, Virgil served in the Kiwanis Club, was on the board of directors for Downtown Roanoke, Inc., and was an honorary lifetime member of the Distributive Education Club of Roanoke. He was also a longtime member of the Beta Tau Fraternity. Virgil enjoyed playing golf, gardening, fishing and bird watching., In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to Good Samaritan Hospice of Roanoke, or do something Virgil would have enjoyed such as play a round of golf or feed the birds., will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2009, at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. W.M. Howard Suit, 94, died Sunday, June 21, 2009 at Francis Marion Manor. He was born in Smyth County to the late Ed and Ollie Suit and was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Zell Suit, four sisters and four brothers. He was the oldest member of the Lowman Valley Church and was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Army. He was retired from Brunswick Corporation. She was preceded in death by her parents, Vivian and Ethel Hale; her sisters, Edith, Mildred, Jean, Anna, and Eleanor; her brother, William; her son, James B. Dickey; daughter-in-law, Patricia Dickey; her stepson, Dr. Charles Swecker; her stepdaughter, Dr. Alice Swecker Huff; and three husbands, J. Bourne Dickey, Roger Foutz, and James Swecker. She is survived by her sister, Alverda "Johnny Bess" Rhudy; her son and his wife, Roger and Carole Foutz; daughter-in-law, Louise Dickey; stepdaughter-in-law, Betty "BJ" Swecker; stepdaughter, Maggie Bizelle; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; 12 stepgreatgrandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lois was born on May 10, 1905, in Elk Creek, Va., the oldest of eight children., She was a woman ahead of her time, graduating from Virginia Intermont College in 1925, with a certificate in music and a teachers diploma, first claiming jobs playing organ in the silent movies and teaching music., Mom lived her own love stories with three husbands and two sons. She spent the last 21 years of her career working at Mountain Trust Bank. Once retired, she kept her mind active by being a voracious reader, mostly romance novels, working cross-word puzzles, and creating beautiful hand crocheted afghans for almost everyone in her family. She was a wonderful country cook keeping her extended family well fed. She lived independently until she was 97 at which time she moved into Friendship Health and Rehab where she experienced compassionate care for her last seven years., Never so much truer a quote than in her college yearbook "In speaking of our little Lois, we can truly say, "Never was so rich a gem set in less than gold ..a young lady with an adorable disposition and winning personality. She was born in Richlands, Va., and was the daughter of Gertrude Hess Sweet of Alverado, Va., and the late Herbert Sweet, Sr. She had made her home with her sister, Sue Brown, for the past four years and had attended the Chapel of Love in Richlands, Va. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Oscar and Viola Hess and paternal grandparents, Ted and Pauline Sweet. Survivors, in addition to her mother, are: two sisters: Sue Brown of Pounding Mill, Va., Bonnie Johnson of Pounding Mill, Va.; three brothers: Roger Sweet of Alverado, Va., Jr. Sweet and wife, Diane, of Grundy, Va., Jimmy Sweet and wife, Teresa, of Jewell Ridge, Va.; three nieces and five nephews also survive. Funeral services for Brenda Lee Sweet was conducted Tues., June 23, 2009, at 7:00 p.m. at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Va., with Preacher Hobert Kennedy and Terry Wimmer officiating. He was born Nov. 24, 1965, in Smyth County. He loved farming and raised purebred black Simmental cattle. He enjoyed the outdoors. He was preceded in death by several close relatives. WILLIS, Anne Booth, 95, died on June 13, 2009, in Richmond, Virginia, where she lived at Our Lady of Hope Health Center for the past seven years. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Hughson Willis. Born in Richmond, she was the daughter of Augustus Arsell Booth and Emma Betts Lea. She grew up in Danville and attended The College of William and Mary, later receiving a bachelor of science degree from Teachers College of Columbia University. She and her husband raised their family in Greensboro. Active in many church and civic affairs, she was a former trustee of Stratford College in Danville, a former member of the Guilford County Board of the North Carolina Symphony, former board member of the UNC-G Friends of the Library and the English Speaking Union, past president of the Friday Afternoon Club, former chairman of the Guilford Committee of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in North Carolina, and a volunteer with Mobile Meals. Active at St. Francis Church for many years, she was president of Women of the Church and, with her husband, established the memorial garden. Before moving to Richmond she was a member of Holy Trinity Church. She is survived by her daughter, Anne Willis Peck (and Dr. Edward A. Peck III) of Richmond; sons, James H. Willis Jr. of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Robert F. Willis (and Nancy Schamberg Willis) of Silver Spring, Maryland; and two granddaughters, Sally Peck Ashby (and James Ashby IV) and Lea Willis Peck of Richmond. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 27, at 12:30 p.m. in Green Hill Cemetery, Danville. Jun 25, 2009 BUFFALO, N.Y. — Venora White, 71, of Buffalo, died May 29, 2009, at Hartford Hospital. She was born in Elkhorn, W.Va., on Nov. 13, 1937, to Mattie Lee Miller of Buffalo. She was reared by her maternal grandparents, John and Emma Hairston, and graduated from Albert Harris High School in Martinsville, Va., then attended Erie County Community College in Buffalo. She was a professional clinical assistant at Rosewell Park Cancer Institute for 35 years, retiring at age 55. She was a member of True Bethel Baptist Church and a member of CSEA. Surviving are two daughters, Shirlynn White of West Hartford and Michelle White of Hartford; two grandsons; a brother, John Hairston of Powhatan, W.Va.; and other relatives. A celebration-of -life service was held June 5 at Paul A. Shaker/Farmingdale Funeral Home in New Britain. Burial was private. |

Dale Hamilton Whittaker, 72, of Pearisburg, the White Gate community in Giles County, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at the family home. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at A. He was born Oct. 31, 1936, in the family home at White Gate, son of the late John Marvin and Nellie Hamilton Whittaker. He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church. He was loving husband, father and grandfather and a dedicated Christian man who never met a stranger. He served in the U.S. Air Force, was employed by Western Union, Burlington Industries and retired from the Bland Correctional Center where he was a licensed water treatment plant operator. He was the fourth generation of his family to continue the family farm operation along the banks of Big Walker Creek. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Allen "Cap" Whittaker, also of White Gate. He was a member of the Rural Retreat Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army, a lifetime member of the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services, and had retired from American Furniture Company in Chilhowie with 41 years of service.
