Gary Nelson (Hambone) Hamrick, 52, of Christiansburg, Va., went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, in the company of his loved ones after a long courageous battle with colon cancer. He was born in Radford, Va., on January 15, 1957, to George Nelson and Shirley Hartsock Hamrick. He was a graduate of Christiansburg High School, Class of 1975. He was employed at Volvo GM Truck Inc. for 33 � years. He served in the local union 2069 for many years and most recently as a bargaining chairman., He is preceded in death by his father-in-law, Dewey I. Jun 19, 2009 Leon Harding Smith, 84, formerly of Chatmoss Court Extension, Martinsville, died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was born in Brookneal in Campbell County on Sept. 10, 1924, to Moton Washington and Margaret Tanner Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ida L. Smith, in 1997; two brothers, Marvin J. and John T. Smith; and a sister, Phyllis S. Childress. He was an Army veteran of World War II, having served as a private first class (Pfc.) in the 328th Field Artillery Battalion. He saw action in North Africa and Italy, where he was awarded three Bronze Stars. He was a self-employed independent insurance agent in Martinsville for 41 years. He was a member of the Life Underwriters Association and a former member of American Legion Post 42 and the VFW. Smith was a member of Chatham Heights United Methodist Church, where he had served as chairman of the administrative council, on the finance committee and staff parish relations committee. Surviving are one son, Randall L. "Randy" Smith of Bassett; one daughter, Charlotte S. Agee of Martinsville; three brothers, William O. Smith of Richmond and Lyle T. Smith and Larry W. Smith, both of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Miriam S. Woody and Adelle S. Crews of Lynchburg and Ruth S. Holt of Virginia Beach; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Schobel spent several years stationed in Spain, and while based in Norfolk, served on ships including the Iwo Jima and the Guadalcanal before retiring as a senior chief petty officer in 1982 after 20 years. He later worked as an electrician for several government contracting companies while pursuing an associates degree through St. Leo's College. Mr. Schobel loved history, particularly World War II, as well as movies depicting that period. He spent the past year chronicling the family's history, which included searches for records from the town of his mother's birth in Chile. In addition to his wife Barbara, Mr. Schobel is survived by his son, Brian Schobel of Chantilly, Va., and his children, Candice, Marcia and Amber, as well as a great-granddaughter, Natasha. He is also survived by his daughter, Diana Schobel, who lives in Frederick, Md., with her husband Eric and their two children Nora and Tegan. Wayne Culver Stanton passed away on Wednesday, June 17, 2009. He was born April 15, 1935, and lived all of his life in Roanoke, Va. He is preceded in death by his parents, Floyd and Ann Stanton. He is survived by his loving wife, Lawanna Horn Stanton; a brother, Donald Stanton, of Berryville; a son, Kevin Stanton and Paula DeLawter, of Louisville, Ky.; two daughters, Anne Britt and her husband, Ron, of Glen Allen, and Sandy Keoughan and her husband, Tom, of Roanoke; and four grandchildren, Tara Keoughan, Sean Keoughan, Bailey Britt and Alex Britt. In recent years, he was blessed to meet and marry Lawanna and become a part of her family including her daughter, Cheryl Taylor and her husband, Alan, of Memphis, Tenn.; her sons, Eric Walsh and his wife, Susan, of Laurinburg, N.C., Scott Walsh and his wife, Tina, of Vienna, W.Va., and Stacey Walsh and his wife, Sherry, of Warrenton. Wayne especially enjoyed getting to know his new grandchildren, Adam Cole and his wife, Hannah, Michael Cole, Tyler Walsh, Benjamin Walsh, Samantha Walsh, Erica Walsh, Deborah Hammond; and especially his "Squat-blossom," Skylar Walsh. They traveled often and enjoyed visiting family, and friends and interesting new places., Wayne was a graduate of Jefferson High School and National Business College. He was a small business owner in Roanoke for many years and was an expert in the field of transportation. He was raised to the Degree of Master Mason in Pleasants Masonic Lodge in 1983 and later became Worshipful Master of this lodge during the 100th anniversary. He is the Present Master of the Buena Vista Lodge # 186 having served as such since 2006. He also served as the Master of Cave Spring Masonic Lodge #230 in 2002. He was a member of the Lakeland Masonic Lodge #190. He was a frequent speaker at Mountain City Lodge #167 in Lexington. He was renown for his lectures at Masonic Lodges. He served as the Deputy Grand Master of Virginia for the 20th Masonic district in 2006. He was also a member and past Captain of the Arab Patrol in the Kazim Shrine Temple., The family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 6 p.m. on Saturday, June 20, 2009. Mr. Roger L. Walker (Sonny) formerly of Dinwiddie, County, residing at 135 Old Street, Petersburg, Va., departed this life on Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at Southside Regional Medical Center, Petersburg, Va. He was retired from Brown and Williamson Tobacco Company with 24 years of service. His last employment was as a security guard. He was the oldest child of the late George and Rosena Walker and a member of the Olive Branch Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his wife, Geneva Johnson Walker, and three brothers, George Walker Jr., Collin Walker and Deacon Earl Walker. He is survived by four sisters, Mary L. Parham (Daniel), Elsie M. Browder, Estelle V. Gant and Barby J. Roney, all of Petersburg, Va.; two brothers, Lindy A. Walker (Arlene) of Petersburg, Va., and John Walker (Deborah) of Louisville, Ky.; five aunts, Annie M. Jun 19, 2009 William David Penn, 57, of Mount Airy, N.C., died Wednesday, June 17, 2009, at his home. He was born in Patrick County on Nov. 7, 1951, to Lester C. and Gracie Nolen Penn. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son. Penn worked at Cross Creek Apparel. Surviving are one son, David Penn of Westfield, N.C.; one brother, Larry Penn of Mount Airy; one sister, Dorothy Scales of Stuart; and several nieces and nephews.
