Jun 26, 2009 Alonzo Clay "Bro Beal" Beal, 82, of 310 Southland Drive, Martinsville, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009, at the VA Medical Center in Salem. He was born in Henry County on June 26, 1926, to George Beal and Fannie Dillon Beal. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Hazel Turner Beal; a daughter, Gloria B. Parker, and two grandchildren. He served in the Navy, retired from Hooker Furniture Corp. with 15 years of service and was a member of Refuge Temple Ministries. Surviving are six daughters, Mae B. Shareef, Janice Beal, Sarah Beal, Brenda Hairston and Rita Barksdale, all of Martinsville, and Marilyn Beal of Mt. Vernon, N.Y.; four sons, Wilie B. Turner and Larry Beal, both of Roanoke, and James Beal and Lerond Beal, both of Martinsville; a sister, Lillian Brooks of Martinsville; 25 grandchildren; and 46 great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Refuge Temple Ministries with Elder Alan Preston officiating. Burial will be in the Ross family cemetery in Bassett. The family will receive friends at the church 30 minutes before the funeral and other times at the home. Hines Funeral Services Inc. is in charge of arrangements. |

Ruth Elizabeth Wade Beheler, 83, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, June 23, 2009 after a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Norvelle Donald Lee Beheler, who died in January of this year. Born June 15, 1926, she was a long time member of Bethel Baptist Church. She loved God, her family, her dearest friends, her trips to Virginia Beach, crossword puzzles, reading and gardening. She exercised daily, and with all of that, found plenty of time for children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who called her "Nana Ru". She is survived by her children, Cheryl Beheler, Donna Gray and husband, Michael, Elizabeth Snider-Chittum and husband, David, and Steven Beheler and wife, Yvette; grandchildren, Davian Bishop, Heather Gray Indrawan and husband, Karolus, Jennifer Gray Little and husband, James, Wade Snider, Mitch Snider, and Megan Beheler; and one great-granddaughter, Lindsay Bishop; her brothers, Hayden and wife, Gloria, Leonard and wife, Nancy and John. Her family and friends will miss her very much, but know that she is with God, and is joyful. Services will be at Oakey's South Chapel at 2 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2009. Janie "Louise" Elswick Brown, age 84 of Tazewell, Va., went to be with the Lord on Sun., June 21, 2009, at her home. Born March 19, 1925 in the Cove area of Tazewell County, Va., she was the daughter of the late John Henry "Jack" and Nannie Patrick Elswick. She was a lifelong resident of Tazewell County, Va., and a long time member of the Pisgah United Methodist Church. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Mrs. Brown was a former employee of the Tazewell County Development Corporation, a founder of Patch Blossom Exclusive of Tazewell, until its closing. She was a faithful employee of Hurst-Scott Funeral Home of Tazewell, Va., from it's beginning in 1988 till her retirement in 2005. She was an avid seamstress, homemaker, and caretaker of others. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Thomas "Shorty" Brown, Sr.; one daughter, Mary Ellen Brown; two sisters, Mary Howard Marrs and Grace "Hop" Hall; five brothers, William H. "Bill" Elswick, Stewart A. "Pood" Elswick, Robert M. "Bob" Elswick, James T. "Slim" Elswick, and Archie L. Elswick; two sons-in-law, the Reverend David A. Wood and Rodney "Chip" Blevins. Survivors include two daughters, the Reverend Margaret B. Wood-Johnston and husband, Andrew, of Fredericksburg, Va., and Dale B. Blevins of Tazewell, Va.; three sons, Howard Thomas "Tom" Brown, Jr. and wife, Sue, Jack "Roger" Brown and wife, Judy, and Larry Daniel Brown and wife, Debby, all of Tazewell, Va.; two brothers, Roy D. Elswick and wife, Betty, and Walter C. "Brownie" Elswick and wife, Bertie, all of Tazewell, Va.; grandchildren, Michael D. Thomas William Canary Jr., 82, of Roanoke, Va., resides now in heaven. He passed away on Wednesday afternoon, June 24, 2009. Tom served in the United States Navy during World War II. After his honorable discharge, he was trained as a watchmaker and was employed with Henebry's Jewelers for 38 years. He managed the Salem store for nine years and the downtown Roanoke store for 21 years. Tom then managed Fink's Jewelers downtown location for 12 years, retiring in 1992. He then drove for the Virginia Division of the Visually Handicapped from 1993 to 2002., Tom was a past President of the Virginia Jewelers Association, and was a 1981 recipient of the Brotherhood Award from the National Conference of Christians and Jews. He served on the Board of Directors of the Roanoke Chamber of Commerce; the Better Business Bureau of Western Virginia; Downtown Roanoke, Inc.; Rotary Club of Roanoke; Saint Vincent's Boys Home; Roanoke Valley Junior Miss, Inc.; Roanoke Catholic Schools; and Saint Andrew's Diocesan Cemetery., Tom was a regular swimmer at the Downtown YMCA for many years, achieving membership in the 1000 mile swimmers club., He was a longtime member of both Saint Andrew's Catholic Church and Our Lady of Nazareth Catholic Church, serving on the OLN Building and Finance Committee, School PTA, and as a Eucharistic Minister. He served as co-chairman and organizer of Roanoke Catholic Schools first annual Carousel., Tom's family appreciates the loving care given by so many from Lewis-Gale Hospital, Generation Solutions, The Court at Roanoke, and Adult Care Center of Roanoke Valley., He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas William Canary Sr. and Helen L. Jim Gene Carleton, of Salem, Va., was born August 5, 1928, in the small town of Stratford, Okla., the youngest of 10 children. After high school he was admitted to and graduated from Oklahoma University. With 100 dollars from his older brother, he traveled to Syracuse University. He worked as a resident advisor while pursuing his post-graduate degree, eventually completing his PhD in social sciences. Jim both taught within the history department and worked in different administrative positions. During the Korean War Jim served in the United States Army, both in the United States and occupied Austria. Returning to Syracuse he was promoted regularly achieving the position of Vice Chancellor. Moving to Illinois he then became Vice President of Student Affairs at Northwestern University. Throughout his career he was admired for his no-nonsense honesty and straightforwardness. During times of student unrest he was a successful negotiator and a calming influence between different groups. Jim was happily married for 57 years to Frances Bee Carleton. He cared deeply for his wife and three children. Jim had a great love for animals, good books, and news of his children's and grandchildren's greatest endeavors. Favorites of his were Hank Williams, pecan pie, chicken-fried steak, the family dogs, Dinah and Cherokee, and following news and politics. He believed in the importance of imagination, humor, and creativity. Most of all he believed in the importance of education. He is survived by his wife, Frances Carleton; his brother, Kenneth Carleton; his three children, Timothy Carleton (Elisa Meredith), Amelia Roberson (Clyde), and Brenda Carleton (David Peifer); his grandchildren, Lily Peifer, Dylan Peifer, Garth Roberson, Ransom Roberson, and many nieces and nephews. Charles Perry Coe, 51, of Wytheville died Monday, June 22, 2009, after a long and courageous fight with ALS which is commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 24, at 2 p.m. at West End United Methodist Church with the Revs. Janet Richardson and Ann Blair officiating. Interment will be in Rosewood Memorial Gardens at Rural Retreat. He was born Jan. 31, 1958, in Wytheville. After graduating from George Wythe High School, he attended Wytheville Community College where he obtained his associate degree in business. After obtaining his associate degree, he became employed by Ewald Lester Insurance Co. which later became Bankers Insurance Co. He was a member of the Insurance Agents of Southwest Virginia serving as president from 1995-97. Throughout his career, he served on various insurance company councils. In 2005, he became the Regional Vice President of Bankers Insurance, Wytheville. He was a member of the Appalachian Officials Assoc. from 2000 to 2007, a member of the Wytheville Golf Club where he chaired several committees and served on the board of directors. He was an avid golfer and a staunch fan of the North Carolina Tarheels and a member of West End United Methodist Church in Wytheville. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles E. Coe; a brother, Darren Coe; and his grandparents, Garlen and Thelma Callahan and Charles and Mildred Coe. Survivors include his wife, Leigh Ann Coe of Wytheville; two sons, William Parker Coe and Charles Peyton Coe, both of Wytheville; his mother, Ruth C. Alfred Gilbert Dance went to be with the Lord on June 24, 2009, at John Randolph Medical Center. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Ralph Alfred Dance and Rachel Gill Dance. He was born June 24, 1931, in Chesterfield County. He was a member of Woods United Methodist Church, where he taught the Men's Bible Class and sang in the choir. Mr. Dance was also a member of the Southern Chesterfield Ruritan Club and a Master Mason of Blandford Lodge #3. He also belonged to a hunt club where he enjoyed hunting with his friends. Mr. Dance is survived by a sister, Laura D. Collier (N.M. Collier Jr.); a niece, Jennifer C. Brockwell (Ben); nephew, Nathaniel M. Edsel Thomas Duncan, 87, of Willis, Va., returned to his heavenly home on Wednesday, June 24, 2009. Born on September 30, 1921, at White Rock in Floyd County, Va. He was the last survivor of nine children. Edsel was preceded in death by his parents, Creed and Mary Louis Duncan; one sister, Viola; and seven brothers, Oakley, Shannon, Rommie, Ralph, Alvis, Harless, and Kessley. Edsel is survived by his wife of 62 years, Pattie Reed Duncan. Also surviving are four children, Larry T. Duncan and wife, Linda, of Roanoke, Brenda A. Hurd and husband, Carlos, of Pilot, Buster L. Duncan and friend, Sherry Akers, of Christiansburg, and Sandra L. Dollar and husband, Delmer, of Blountville, Tenn.; daughter-in-law, Joyce Duncan, of Riner; and special sister-inlaw, Virgie Sutphin, of Floyd. Seven grandchildren dearly loved and will greatly miss their grandfather. Eight greatgrandchildren loved him as he did them. Many extended family and friends will miss him and hold him in their hearts., Edsel was a life long resident of Floyd County. He served on the board of supervisors for Floyd from 1992 to 1995. He loved the mountains and lived a peaceful content life there. During World War II he proudly served his country. Edsel worked for Hercules Powder Company in Radford, Va., for more than half his career, later retiring from Yokohama in Salem, Va. He was an active member of Pleasant Valley Church of the Brethren, serving as deacon and superintended of some years. He currently held the position of Vice President of the SADD (Students against Destructive Decisions) scholarship award program. This program is also known as the Bob Sowers Jr. scholarship fund in memory of Bob Sowers Jr., His faith always strong and the love for his family constant. Pattie was the love of his life along with their four children. All the family loved him, will miss him, and feel very blessed to have had him in their lives., Edsel Duncan, having completed his work here, can now be lovingly embraced by his Father in heaven, and be joyfully reunited with his family that's gone on before. Nellie V. Haislip NASSAWADOX - Nellie G. Haislip, 77, passed away June 24, 2009. She was born March 25, 1932, in Appomattox County. The family moved to Bayville Farms when she was 14. She was a graduate of Kempsville High School. Nellie worked as a secretary for Bank of Virginia for 15 years and Forest Exterminating for 13 years. Nellie was preceded in death by her parents, John Samuel and Ida Dove Guill; her sisters, Lillian Robertson, Ida Malbone, Nancy Guill, Anne Williams and Ruby Gaulding; her brothers, Harilah L. Guill, Otis W. Guill and Richard S. Guill; and a stepson, Louis R. Haislip. Nellie is survived by her loving husband of 29 years, Billy Haislip; two sisters, Jennette Guill of Chesapeake and Hilda Copeland of Richmond; a niece, Jean Burke of Newport News; five stepchildren; and the love of her life, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. The family will remember her as a kind and giving person that will be deeply missed. She was born on April 28, 1921 to the late Timothy Hawkins Henderlite and Ollie Murray Hutton Henderlite and was preceded in death by two brothers, George Henderlite and Harry Henderlite, and a sister-in-law, Emma Henderlite. She graduated from Atkins High School in 1938 and was a member of the Groseclose Church of God. She was church treasurer and was past president of the Women of the Church of God. Lawrence L. Piper VIRGINIA BEACH - Lawrence Leon Piper, 72, passed away June 24, 2009, in a local hospital. Mr. Piper was a native of Detroit, and lived in the Virginia Beach area for 31 years. Larry worked for the United Way for more than 28 years, 18 of those years he was the Director of Finance. He was a member of St. John's the Apostle Catholic Church where he served on the school board and finance committee. He was a youth sports coach for many years, a member of the Lions Club, an avid bowler, and a dedicated University of Michigan fan. Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Carol Ann Piper; a son, Keith Piper and his wife Kimberly of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Jennifer Piper of Midlothian, Va.; two sisters, Carol Ann Piper of Sterling Heights, Mich., and Kathleen Gallagher of Macomb, Mich.; and three grandchildren, Kyle, Katie and Korinne. Ruth Irene Powers, 74, died on Sunday, June 21, 2009 in Smyth County Community Hospital. She was born on June 24, 1934 to the late Ira and Virgie Powers Lamie. W.M. Howard Suit, 94, died Sunday, June 21, 2009 at Francis Marion Manor. Dickey; daughter-in-law, Patricia Dickey; her stepson, Dr. Charles Swecker; her stepdaughter, Dr. Alice Swecker Huff; and three husbands, J. Bourne Dickey, Roger Foutz, and James Swecker. She is survived by her sister, Alverda "Johnny Bess" Rhudy; her son and his wife, Roger and Carole Foutz; daughter-in-law, Louise Dickey; stepdaughter-in-law, Betty "BJ" Swecker; stepdaughter, Maggie Bizelle; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; 12 step grandchildren; 12 stepgreatgrandchildren; one stepgreat-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lois was born on May 10, 1905, in Elk Creek, Va., the oldest of eight children., She was a woman ahead of her time, graduating from Virginia Intermont College in 1925, with a certificate in music and a teachers diploma, first claiming jobs playing organ in the silent movies and teaching music., Mom lived her own love stories with three husbands and two sons. She spent the last 21 years of her career working at Mountain Trust Bank. Once retired, she kept her mind active by being a voracious reader, mostly romance novels, working cross-word puzzles, and creating beautiful hand crocheted afghans for almost everyone in her family. She was a wonderful country cook keeping her extended family well fed. She lived independently until she was 97 at which time she moved into Friendship Health and Rehab where she experienced compassionate care for her last seven years., Never so much truer a quote than in her college yearbook "In speaking of our little Lois, we can truly say, "Never was so rich a gem set in less than gold ..a young lady with an adorable disposition and winning personality. A devoted husband of 67 years to the late Lela Sturgis Terry, he was a native of Willis Wharf and the son of the late Henry Miller Terry and the late Rachel Wescott Terry. Mr. Terry was past president and longtime secretary of the Exmore/Belle Haven Lions Club, past district governor of the Lions District 24-D, served on the Northampton County Zoning Board, Northampton/ Accomack Planning Commission, and the board of the Eastern Shore Community College. He was a founding member and past president of the Eastern Shore Yacht & Country Club, member of Exmore Moose Lodge No. 683, and the Accomac Elks Lodge. Mr. Terry attended Virginia Tech, Class of 1936, and was an active member of Virginia Tech Alumni Corps of Cadets, "Old Guard." He was a longtime owner with his brother, H.M. "Buzz" Terry Jr., of H.M. Terry Company Inc. Dale Hamilton Whittaker, 72, of Pearisburg, the White Gate community in Giles County, died Sunday, June 21, 2009, at the family home. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at A. Vest & Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Danny Shortridge officiating. Interment will be in the Stinson Cemetery at White Gate. He was born Oct. 31, 1936, in the family home at White Gate, son of the late John Marvin and Nellie Hamilton Whittaker. He was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church. He was loving husband, father and grandfather and a dedicated Christian man who never met a stranger. He served in the U.S. Air Force, was employed by Western Union, Burlington Industries and retired from the Bland Correctional Center where he was a licensed water treatment plant operator. He was the fourth generation of his family to continue the family farm operation along the banks of Big Walker Creek. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carl Allen "Cap" Whittaker, also of White Gate. Survivors include his wife of over 48 years, Virginia Carol Whittaker; a daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda Dale and Mark Gusler of White Gate; two sons and daughters-in-law, Jeffrey Marvin and Regina Whittaker of Goodview, Craig Hamilton and Clara Whittaker of White Gate; a sister, Josephine "Sis" Waller of Richfield, N.C.; 11 grandchildren, Andrew Gusler, Molly Gusler, Todd Whittaker, Maegan Whittaker, Chana Whittaker, Rachel Whittaker, Grace Whittaker, John Whittaker, Susanne Whittaker, Amelia Whittaker and Luke Whittaker; several nieces, nephews and cousins; his church family at Mount Zion United Methodist Church; and his big black Lab, Bear. Jun 26, 2009 William "Bill" Shelton, 80, of Wingfield Orchard Road in Martinsville, died Thursday, June 25, 2009, at Memorial Hospital in Martinsville. He was born in Henry County on Nov. 28, 1928, to Earnest and Nellie Burnett Shelton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Emily Perry Shelton; a sister, Earnestine Hutchinson; and two brothers, Clifton and Jack Shelton. He retired from Fieldcrest Mills with 49 years of service and was a member of the Fieldale Volunteer Fire Department. He also was a member of Community Baptist Church. Surviving are his sister, Eugenia Nichols of Fieldale; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Collins-McKee-Stone Funeral Homes, Bassett Chapel, with the Rev. C. Carson Williams and Pastor Dan Shelling officiating. Burial will be in Blackberry Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the funeral home and other times at the home. Raymond E. Williams, 72, of Rural Retreat died Friday, June 19, 2009 in Smyth County Community Hospital. He was a member of the Rural Retreat Baptist Church, a veteran of the U.S. Army, a lifetime member of the Rural Retreat Volunteer Emergency Services, and had retired from American Furniture Company in Chilhowie with 41 years of service. Survivors include a son, Shane Williams and wife, Pam, of Springfield, Ga.; two grandchildren, Jonathan and Lauren Williams; a sister, Romona W. Shupe; a brother, Roy L. Williams and wife, Mary, all of Rural Retreat; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Bralley of Speedwell and Wanda Sue Stroup of Rural Retreat; a brother-in-law, David Bralley of Speedwell; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 23, at Rural Retreat Baptist Church with Pastor Jason McNeese and Pastor Travis Price officiating. Interment followed in Rosewood Memorial Gardens with military rites conducted by American Legion Post #229 of Rural Retreat.
